As we enter into our 35 th year at Child Advocates, I cannot help but reflect on the hours, people and time that brought us to this milestone year. In 2018, we served more children and welcomed more new advocates than we ever have. Your support and generosity allowed 888 advocates to provide a voice to 2,334 of Houston’s foster children. Our work is far from over though. The sad truth remains nearly half of the abused and neglected children in Harris County foster care are waiting for an advocate. More children are still in need of someone to speak up for them, someone to give them hope for a brighter, safer future.

To meet these needs, our staff and our programs have grown. It is critical that we continue to expand our capacity to meet the needs of our community. In 2019, we will work to raise more funds and train more advocates so that we can bring hope to even more of the children who need us.

And, while you might notice a few new programs in our organization, our mission is still the same―to mobilize court appointed volunteers to break the vicious cycle of child abuse, and to speak up for abused children who are lost in the system, guiding them to safe environments where they can thrive. Together, as the Child Advocates family, I know we will continue to grow and make a difference for abused children in our community.

Our Advocates At the very heart of Child Advocates, you will find our advocates—the people who make us, us. Each advocate is an individual whose commitment to our mission is like no other. While they could spend their time in countless different ways, each one of them chooses to dedicate it to Houston’s abused children.

After completing 30 hours of training and education, interviews and background checks, each advocate is matched with a case and a coordinator on our staff to guide them. They study the case file and begin getting to know the children in their care.

Throughout a case, they spend time each month driving to visit their children, meeting with the parties of the case, working with their coordinator to understand the ins and outs of the child welfare system and testifying in court. But, our advocates do so much more. They dry tears and give hugs and throw birthday parties, too. Most importantly, they serve as a ‘constant’ person for the children to count on during this tumultuous time. Essentially, our advocates do whatever it takes to ensure that the needs of the children are being met while they are in care.

Pull for Kids Classic Our signature fundraiser is a casual event. Last year, this two-day event was chaired by Traci & Derrick Jensen and honored Direct Energy.

Angels of Hope Luncheon and Fashion Presentation Hosted by the Friends of Child Advocates, this annual event kicks off the holiday season. Chaired by Laura Davenport and Nadine Boutros, the 2018 luncheon honored longtime supporter, Brandi Maxwell.

Houston Children’s Festival For 30 years, the Houston Children’s Festival has been supporting Child Advocates’ mission. For one special weekend each spring, downtown Houston is filled with 50,000 guests.

Superhero Run Our 5K race and 1K kids’ fun run is a family-friendly event we host each fall. Superheroes of all ages show up to help us give a voice to Houston’s littlest victims.

Why support us?

The children. On any given day, there are 4,000 children in Harris County CPS custody. However, we can only serve about half of that number. Studies have shown that children with an advocate do better than those without one, and with your help, we can provide an advocate to more children in our area.

Our reputation. Since our start, we have built a solid reputation as a community partner, friend and diligent steward of your funds. Our cost-effective volunteer advocacy model allows us to provide necessary services to children in custody at a very low cost.

Our need. Child Advocates is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, and a member of Texas and National Court Appointed Special Advocate associations. We do not charge a fee for services and rely solely on support from caring individuals, organizations and foundations.
