Our Story In the summer of 2005, my family had an amazing

opportunity to visit Europe. At the time my daughters were 6, 5, and just 3 1/2 years old. As exciting as our trip might seem to adults, my young girls didn’t necessarily think the same and were unimpressed by museums and historic sites.

They were, however, fascinated with foreign languages.

Consequently, whenever possible I endeavored to teach them new words to immerse my girls in their surroundings. Unfortunately, my language skills were not always on par with my desire.

A prime example of this occurred when attempting to pronounce one of the favorite snacks we enjoyed: sweet, warm, delicious waffles commonly found at street kiosks.

The French word for waffles is “gaufres.” Not being particularly adept in French though, my mangled version sounded a lot like Gophers to my 3 1/2 year old. And, lo and behold, my apologies to the French, waffles forevermore became known as Gophers in our family.
