Insulin in our bodies helps turn food into energy. Sometimes, our bodies stop making insulin. Doctors call this type 1 diabetes.
Scientists are trying to figure out why this happens. Lots of kids around the world have diabetes. And it’s not because of anything they’ve done.
Diabetes is not contagious. We can tell our friends what it means to have diabetes – that we have to take insulin and monitor our blood sugar everyday.
Sometimes we are angry or sad when we first find out we have diabetes.
Special people called diabetes educators can teach us how to stay well. Taking our insulin helps the glucose or sugar in food enter the cells in our bodies.
This way we have lots of energy so we can play with our friends, make brilliant inventions and dream of places we’ll go.
Sometimes having diabetes is not easy, but knowing how to manage it makes us happy and strong.
