We are grateful that we have a space to offer for us to come together as a community. Chiiz Photography Magazine is here to showcase Fine-Art Photography in this issue. The specific genre existed with the unabridged form of photography and vision of the photographer as an artist. FineArt photography is not restricted to shapes and figures only. Its version is undefined that includes food to boudoir, fashion to wildlife & nature to documentary photography. Fine-Art Photography is all about freedom of an idea that a photographer pursues through its photographs.

With this digital issue of Chiiz, readers will acknowledge some of the promising Fine-Art Photographers all over the world including, Patty Maher who photographed females in coexistence with the environment, Kat Bird who showcased aromatic flowers in a way like no one has ever photographed and then, Steve Day who has clicked fine art monochromes by heart. Apart from this, there is an Interview of Gab Bois, a photographer who creates her images at home and has a unique way of showcasing her creativity and hooked us to the simplicity of those captivating images. This issue also provides a platform for Chiiz Gallery to showcase the best-submitted photographs across the photographer’s community.

Old is Gold THE VULTURE AND THE LITTLE GIRL This compelling photograph of the Vulture and a Little Girl (later confirmed as a boy), depicting the 1993 famine in Sudan, was photographed by Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist. The photograph won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 1994 and turned out to be the Picture of the Year by The American Magazine.

The plaintive photograph of a cadaverous toddler who was collapsing from hunger on his way to a feeding center in famine-ravaged Sudan while a vulture ominously loomed in the background, initially published in the New York Times in 1993 (which later described it as “a metaphor for Africa’s despair”) Once it was published, there were hundreds of questions asking about the child that led them to describe that the child escaped the vulture. The critics jump down Kevin’s throat to understand why he hadn’t assisted the child. Nevertheless, it brought a tremendous psychological burden to Kevin Carter.

Years later, the parents of the child confirmed that the boy misrepresented a girl. His name was Kong Nyong and he survived the famine but died 14 years later of malaria.

On 27 July 1994, barely two months after having received his Pulitzer Prize, 33-year-old Kevin Carter could shoulder that burden no more and took his own life.

After coming home from New York, he wrote, he was “depressed … without a phone … money for rent … money for child support … money for debts … money!!! … I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain … of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners … “ Well, there is another side of the story also. Joao Silva, a photo reporter who accompanied Kevin to Sudan gave an interview with Japanese Writer and Journalist Akio Fujiwara, which Fujiwara published in his book Ehagaki ni sareta shonen- The Boy Who Became a Postcard. According to Silva, he and Carter landed in southern Sudan with the United Nations on March 11, 1993. UN personnel told them that they would be leaving in 30 minutes, the necessary time to distribute the food. Carter took many photos of hungry children. The boys’ parents were busy collecting the food from the airplane, meaning they were momentarily apart from their young ones.

Carter snapped a picture from 10 meters away and took a couple of them and the vulture went away.

“As these children are so weak and malnourished, to the viewer it may already seem that they are dead. A common feature of the fauna in this area is the vultures, who regularly look for human scraps that the humans leave behind. And so, if you use a zoom lens, with a close up of the boy and the birds behind him, it gives the message that they are going to eat him- well, this is a complete illusion. The animal is perhaps twenty meters away from the child.” (Extracted from the Wikipedia) And so this image, a good representation of the society, that allows for terrible famine to occur, is not an accurate portrayal of what was really happening. This boy had a family and the vulture was not trying to eat him.

How would you describe your journey?

Growing up as an only child definitely had an impact on my creative development. I was always focused and loved making things with my hands. Whenever I wanted to get a project done, I would sit down and wouldn’t get up until I had finished it. This was to the point where, when I was in the zone, I’d stop feeling hunger or the need to go to the bathroom. I’m still like that today. Art has always been my favourite subject at school. My favourite projects were the ones that required a lot of time and precision. I just loved sitting down for hours, devoting my full attention to something that came to life before my eyes.

My dad had a significant influence on my creativity.

When I was younger, he made me a convenience store from a fridge box. He hand-painted it perfectly, with brick walls, a beautiful “OPEN” sign, and even added some cats hanging out around the corner. It was my favourite thing to play with, way more so than any mass-produced toy I had. One winter, he made me an igloo with a bunch of moving boxes that he taped together. Again, painted and shaped so realistically. It was in the basement, and I was terrified of being down there in the dark. Still, I was so incredibly drawn to that igloo that I asked to sleep in it every single night of that winter. Everything he crafted for me was and still is pure gold in my eyes.

I think that every idea should be written down, even if it seems embarrassing to have thought of it. These ridiculous or boring ideas evolve and become more polished over time and, in my experience, have resolved in some of my favourite works I’ve ever made.

Everything! I try to collect as many ideas as possible. I end up not using most of them, but somewhere between two horrible ideas lies one not-sobad idea, and that’s what I’ll bring to life. Working with what I know is a fundamental principle for me.

I walk around my house to get inspiration from objects in every room. I will often make lists of objects in my home, going from room to room, writing everything down. I’ll then come back to my desk to try and work from the words on my list. I’ll ask myself questions about the meaning or the physical form of the objects. For example, a door handle.

What else has that specific shape? A head of broccoli, a light bulb, etc.

You have worked with “The TRP,” the music trio.

How different was it working with them?

Oh wow, that was a while ago! It was definitely out of my comfort zone because I’m so used to having a clear idea of what I’ll be shooting beforehand. For that shoot in particular I was executing ideas on the spot. It was a good exercise in improvisation. The EP that we were shooting the cover for was called Soak so we were experimenting with water. The model’s outfit ended up fully drenched, water was splashing all over the place, and she managed to hold the pose throughout it all. Such a champ!

What are the essential gears you use while shooting?

My strategy when it comes to shooting is to be able to work no matter where I am. I always use a point-and-shoot camera because it’s easy to carry.

The one I use the most is very sturdy, so I can use it in almost any climate. That’s pretty much the only thing I need. I usually have a strong visual in mind before starting the process, so that helps a lot with narrowing down the equipment required. As long as I have myself to model, my little camera, and sometimes a tripod, I’m good to go!

In this lively discourse on the power of images, a renowned and acclaimed photographer Susan Meiselas returns to the scenes of a revolution that she witnessed and captured with her camera. Richly permeated with context and color, PICTURES FROM A REVOLUTION approaches the places and people behind Meiselas’ emblematic photographs of war-torn Nicaragua in the late 70’s and 80’s. Dredging into the lives of Guerrillas, Sandinistas & Bystanders, dispersed from Miami to Managua, a decade after their altercation in a violent struggle, this artful film finds prudent pride amidst still-fresh, stirring memories. The stories behind the renowned photos ignite a new understanding of social combat while inviting reflections on the war photographer’s complicated relationship with her subjects.

In 1981, Susan Meiselas published 70 photographs she took chronicling the Sandinista revolution in “Nicaragua, June 1978 to July 1979”. Meiselas returns to besiege Central America to backtrack her steps and to interview some of the people she captured ten years ago. As she dives through the sun-deluged dusty villages of rural Nicaragua, Meiselas contrasts this intersection or that building site with a more breathtaking moment when it served as the background to Sandinista assault with Somoza’s National Guard. Several veterans of those assaults talk to Meiselas of their immense hopes and current sadness, of living in a drained country with very little hope for a better life. One person talks of all the foreign economic pressures as an obstacle to the better living conditions he had clashed for. One local hero of that time, however, affirms that the revolution had one overwhelming accomplishment- that they no longer have to fear the National Guard whose outrageous behavior provoked the Sandinista revolution and those casualties were often dumped into the “valley of death” Meiselas had documented, filled with limp, tortured torsos. She interviews two former members of the National Guard, one who continued fighting as a member of the Contras and lost his right hand.

One of the famous photos, an armed guerrilla preparing to hurl a Molotov cocktail, is drawn from one of Meiselas’s photographs, and she dreams of transformation of her real picture into a more straightforward image and a useful symbol. Honestly, She does mark how the revolution in Nicaragua was “the luxury of a dream” for her, while for thousands of others, it had a harder and a credible instant.

The minor French novelist, Jules Valles, mentions the legacy of the Paris Commune as a “great confederation of sadness.” PICTURES FROM A REVOLUTION, co-directed

by Richard P. Rogers and Alfred Guzzetti, tries to capture this sense of emotions, whether in the thwarted ambition of the Toronto auto worker who had dreamed of becoming an engineer, or the obscure fate of a seven-year-old boy whose mother recalls his pride at being chosen for a scholarship in Cuba before training in the former Soviet Union.

PICTURES FROM THE REVOLUTION is a smart, straightforward tale of the evolution of images as they run recklessly into popular culture and political agendas.

Appealingly shot and edited, it is never doubtful and often bravely honest. It is a somber meditation on what sometimes looks like the ineffectiveness of all social struggles. Of all the nonfiction films about Nicaragua, it is the most didactic, open to history. “We lost the luxury of a dream,” Meiselas accepts. “But, the Nicaraguans lost much more.”
