Described by Time magazine as “America’s greatest photographer,” Sally Mann first came to international prominence in 1992 with “Immediate Family,” a series of luminous, haunting photographs of her young children, Emmett, Virginia and Jessie, that were a testimony to their pre-adolescent years and at the same time, were suggestive of their maturity, sexuality and their awareness of consent. This work, and the controversy that followed it, was chronicled in Steven Cantor’s award-winning short film, Blood Ties. Ms. Mann’s portraits stirred controversy while they brought her fame, renewing concerns that America’s young were no longer adequately and safely kept. But Ms. Mann’s images arrived just as the country was beginning to fall deeper and deeper under the thrall of a new culture of obsessive child-rearing, and she seemed, however voyeuristically, merely to be letting her children be. But she was not letting them be, or so it is implied by Steven Cantor in “What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann”. “What Remains…” returns to follow the creation of Mann’s new seminal work: a photo series revolving around various aspects of death and decay. Never one to compromise, Sally Mann reflects on her own personal feelings toward death as she continues to examine the boundaries of contemporary photography. Shown at home on her family farm in Virginia, she is surrounded by her husband and now-grown children, and her willingness to reveal her artistic process as it unfolds allows the viewer to gain exclusive entrance to her world. Spanning five years, “What Remains…”contains unbridled access to the many stages of Mann’s work, and is one of the most exquisitely intimate portraits not only of an artist’s process, but also of a marriage and a life, to appear on film in recent memory. This documentary discusses several aspects of her life, from childhood to the time the documentary was filmed. Sally talks at length about her father and other things from her childhood which affected her, especially her view of art. She also describes how and when she met her husband. A brief discussion of her series “Immediate Family” is included but is only a small portion of the overall film, which does include some information on what her now grown children are doing. Sally discusses the morphing of her work from children to landscapes, which resulted in her “Deep South” series. She goes on from there to explain how the death of an escaped convict on her property and other deaths got
her started on a new project about decay. That is the project after which this film is named. This film spends more time on her “What Remains” series than on her other works. Video of her walking through the Forensic Study Facility for the University of Tennessee and examining and photographing the bodies decomposing there is also included in the film. This is an amazing look into the life and work of Sally Mann. It does contain some nudity, both of her children and of her husband. This nudity is mainly in the display of the photographs she has taken of her husband and children. It is unnerving seeing what she saw, how she made some of her indelible images, and how she confidently embraced her artistry and her peculiarities. Clear, easy to follow, personal but not too personal, ‘What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann’ is a perfect look into the life of one great photographer, Sally Mann, whom Reynolds Price from TIME described as follows: “Few photographers of any time or place have matched Sally Mann’s steadiness of simple eyesight, her serene technical brilliance, and the clearly communicated eloquence she derives from her subjects, human and otherwise – subjects observed with an ardor that is all but indistinguishable from love.” Sarthak Jain sarthak@chiiz.com

Gabriel Isak is a photographer based in Sweden. His art entails surreal and melancholic scenes where he invites the viewer to interact with the inner world of solitary figures that symbolize our own unconscious states. He uses photography as a medium to draw and paint surreal images, minimal and graphic in its aesthetic, rich in symbolism and emotion, focusing on themes inspired by human psychology, dreams and romanticism, as well as his own experiences. Tell us more about your interest in photography. How long have you been involved in photography, more specifically in abstract and surreal photography? I began exploring photography about 11 years ago when I faced depression as a way to express my state of mind. I picked up photography again to make it a profession in 2014 after I had battled depression during a seven year long struggle. At the time, I was going to University, obtaining my BFA in Photography and graduated in December 2016. It was during school that I learnt the importance of having a personal style and to apply it to all my future assignments, and it was here that I began to explore with the Fine Art photography I work with today that involves surreal and abstract elements. It is something that has come to me very naturally. I don’t know from where my interest for it originated; I’ve always been drawn to cool colors in form of blues, cyan and indigos. It has all streamed from my subconscious into my art and I just flow with it. How would you define abstract and surreal photography? What are the differences between abstract or surreal? What makes them unique? To me abstract art is a form of art where the artist creates in a way that does not depict the world accurately or as we know it but instead, uses different geometrical shapes, colors, and other elements in order to depict their vision of a particular subject, theme or reality. Whereas
Surrealism twists and morphs the world as we know it in order to create illusionary scenes that do not make sense, it could also be an art form where the artist uses everyday objects combined in order to create something twisted that makes sense or not. To me both are artforms where one allows the consciousness to express itself in the strangest ways possible, and to make the viewer question what is real and not real in the reality we live in and the reality abstract or surrealist artists depict in their art. Shadows and silhouettes are extensively used in your body of work. Can you describe their significance in your photographs? My work mostly works with the experiences of the soul and therefore I use myself for the anonymous figures in order to portray their internal world, so that the viewer can put themselves in the world of the shadow or silhouette portrayed in my imagery and experience their world, and in turn reflect back on their own personal journey in life. Photomanipulation is something that most tend to frown upon in terms of photography. The abstract and surreal images are often manipulated photographs. Do you think this is an acceptable part of this genre, or should Abstract and Surreal photographs be kept unmanipulated? I definitely believe it’s acceptable, as many times it is

very hard to create the sceneries in real life without distorting reality in person, which is impossible. At the same time, there is no right or wrong thing to do in art or photography, and most of the times I believe it’s best to break the rules. These days, we even have Computer Generated Imagery starting to float around on the web, and many people believe that’s photography when it’s created from a computer and not even a camera. I believe the art world is moving forward in the postmodern direction, where technology, CGI, Digital Photography will all merge together, which some people will find confusing, unacceptable, and call it fake. But at the end of the day, we have to move forward and we live in a world where everything is manipulated and organized to portray the perfect life on social media. And I don’t think it will stop from here, but just continue. We should keep in mind when Photography was invented and was used as a medium of art by artists, it was not taken seriously at all, nor seen with the same value as paintings, and now we have film photography that is seen as “unmanipulated” and more original than digital photography, when in fact film photography is also manipulated in a darkroom using dodging and burning, exposure techniques and other adjustments to create the best possible photograph. Rules within art will always change of what is right and wrong, and artists will keep breaking these rules and new rules will form as technology within the art world moves forward. Your work explore romanticism and human psychology and is quite dreamy. Where do you find your inspiration and how do you work with that? I find a lot of inspiration from my unconscious mind,

letting ideas flow to paper that I have no relation to and explore those. I also stay curious about the world around me by questioning everything in relation to the world, the human and the soul. My years of depression inspired me a lot and moved me into finding a lot of inspiration from human psychology which moved me in the direction of being influenced by dreams and consciousness/ the soul. I’ve also found a lot of inspiration living in Sweden being surrounded by the scandinavian landscapes that are like a dream, or from another world, and it is here that I create most of my works. What are the three things you would advise a photographer who want to follow in your footsteps? 1. Listen to the inner voice and let it guide you throughout your career (but be careful not to listen to the inner saboteur that wants to see you fail, listen to the voice that wants you to succeed and tune the other one out.) 2. Don’t listen to other opinions about your work, observe it, but at the end of the day you choose the direction and what to do with your work, there’s no right or wrong in the art world, so break the rules! 3. Develop a personal style that is authentically YOU, and share your work online from day 1 (no one finds it comfortable in the beginning to invite the audience into your artistic growth, but it is the only way you will grow artistically and get your work out there that will lead you to paid work!)should look the same for the final images of the project. Mixing reality and fiction connect us to our daily lives where the “online” life is taking more time than our real life.

Old is Gold The Lonely City Dweller- Herbert Bayer Herbert Bayer was one of the leading figures in the Bauhaus movement in Germany and throughout his career was a highly influential graphic designer and artist. Bayer began to experiment with photography while he was teaching advertising, typography and layout at the Bauhaus school in Dessau. He produced some straight photographs, highlighting the abstract structures and sculptural qualities of things, but was never interested in the technical side of photography and so his exploration of straight photography was limited. He left the Bauhaus in 1928 and established himself as a leading designer. It was at this stage that he took and interest in photomontage. He used the technique for his own artistic work but also in advertising work, where he was partly responsible for establishing photomontage as a key commercial visual style in the 1930s. His main body of photographic work was produced in the late 1920s and 1930s, after which he continued to develop other areas of visual design.
Surrealist attempts to evoke the dream-state of the Bayer had a long and honorable career as a designer subconscious mind. Artists like Bayer were at the cutting edge of photographic experimentation, and teacher, first at the Bauhaus, in Germany, and assimilating ideas from a wide variety of sources then in the United States. As an artist he is known including the technological advances of The Bauhaus primarily for two Surrealist photo collages done in alongside the political and philosophical revolution of 1932, both included in this retrospective. One is a self-portrait: the viewer looks over Bayer’s shoulder as Surrealism. he stands bare-chested before a mirror, gazing with Herbert Bayer’s photograph ‘Lonely City Dweller’ is horror at his raised left arm, from which a slice has mysteriously and bloodlessly vanished. (He seems to meant to be a self portrait, too, or in any case this is how he designated the surviving print in the Bauhaus be unaware that he is grasping the missing slice in his right hand.) The other, “The Lonely City Dweller,” archive in Berlin. This photograph must be the most shows a pair of open hands with human eyes staring remarkable and captivating metaphor ever to have been devised by Bayer: a pair of hands held up from their palms, floating in front of a building’s against the facades of city tenements, with a pair of facade. These are powerful images. But the rest of eyes staring out at us in the palms of the hands. Bayer’s Surrealist work is distinctly derivative. Although never formally connected with Surrealism, he was fascinated by dream imagery and embraced photomontage as a means of visualizing the psychological realities of modernity. In 1931 he began a series of photomontages illustrating his own dreams, which included this emblematic image in which the artist’s eyes stare from the palms of his hands, cut off at the wrists and floating mysteriously in the courtyard of a Berlin apartment block. This sophisticated photomontage is simultaneously ominous and absurd in tone. The disembodied, hovering hands and eyes we associate with

What Bayer visualizes here is the converse of a normal everyday gesture. The very hands with which we shield our closed eyes in an attempt to escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world, to concentrate entirely on ourselves, now stare at us. The act of seeing, of perceiving the world from a distance, here conjoins with the act of touching and feeling, of experiencing the world at close range. But what does this have to do with the loneliness of the city dweller? Is Bayer perhaps trying to say that people living in the city are just “eyes”, rich in visual impressions, but poor in human contacts? Geometric Variants is based on the geometric relations between a man and space. The association between a question and space in ‘Geometric variations’ has a solid visual effect, which is stressed by the situation of rehashed monochrome structures making a geometrically psychic environment. In this arrangement of pictures, space is spoken to by a few geometric assumes that speak to “variations”, and here the subject is tuned to a particular region in the variety division. The whole project is inspired by the theory of options. It shows how the energy of human thoughts falls into the field of space around it, called the ‘space of options’, giving rise to the material realization of the variant itself. In the ‘Geometric variants’ are presented: a space intended as a background, consisting of repetitive geometric figures, a subject and creating a date for the variant represented by the association of the subject and his choice of how and where to position himself in relation to space.
