Our Aspire programme is open to all students and aims to provide a range of stimulating activities. Designed to support those who wish to progress to competitive universities or courses, it also aims to inspire and support you in your application to university, providing you with opportunities to help you succeed. There are five main aspects to this unique and enriching experience, as well as access to a number of activities such as Edwards engineering placements, Maths and Science Olympiads and debate and essay competitions.
Aspire lectures Throughout the academic year, we host regular Aspire lectures at the college. These are delivered by university lecturers/professors and industry experts and cover as many different subject areas as possible.
UCAS preparation Our students are provided with a range of UCAS and university preparation activities. These can include open and guest lectures, trips, conferences and open days. Past students have also been involved in experiences such as the University of Sussex Open Lecture Programme and Sutton Trust Summer Schools. They’ve also welcomed visiting specialists from Oxford University and taken part in Oxbridge-specific, medicine and veterinary science preparation sessions.
UCAS applications As a student at Haywards Heath College, you’ll be supported with your UCAS application, personal statement, admissions tests, and interviews to give you the best chance of being offered the university place you want.
Competitive University Preparation Programme The top 25 achieving students in year 12 are invited to join
Students in CUPP are taught and supported to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). You will have a two-hour lesson each week starting in term two of year 12 to work on a topic of your choice. You’re expected to work on your project independently, being prepared to submit work as set by the Aspire co-ordinator. An EPQ can also be studied outside of the Aspire programme. It provides UCAS points, academic skills and great interview evidence.
Other students can request to join the programme, subject to availability. These students are aiming to secure places at the most competitive universities such as Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions, as well as some of the more competitive courses such as medicine, law, nursing, teaching, dentistry and veterinary medicine. The programme includes weekly sessions with our Aspire coordinator, focusing on student development in the first term, the EPQ in term two and then UCAS applications until the end of the academic year.

Cracking the code Students stepped back in time to discover the story of Britain’s wartime codebreakers during a STEM trip to Bletchley Park. Now a restored museum and exhibition space, the site offers a fascinating insight into history, innovation and computing. The trip was organised by Mark Gadsby, Teacher of Computer Science at Haywards Heath College. He said: “Bletchley Park is synonymous with Alan Turing, whose work deciphering the German Enigma machine helped shorten the Second World War. He also pioneered techniques that laid the foundations for modern computer science. The visit showed students how maths and computer science can have a real-world impact.” Students also explored The Age of AI exhibition, learning about the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its growing influence on everyday life.
Social sciences explore human behaviour, society and the factors that influence the way people think, act and interact. Through critical thinking, discussion and research, you’ll investigate real-world issues and develop a deeper understanding of the complexities that shape modern society.
