Holly joined with A Levels in biology, dance and psychology, with no animal-handling experience. Immersed in practical learning across a wide range of species, her confidence grew quickly. “Delivering my first lamb was a huge highlight,” she says. “I’d never handled animals before, and now I’m confidently supporting vaccinations.” Inspired by anatomy and physiology, Holly is now considering veterinary nursing or medicine. Amy returned to college after four years working with animals worldwide, determined to progress into conservation. “This course gives you that extra edge,” she explains. “It builds the skills and confidence you need to move into meaningful, paid wildlife work.”

Students of Brinsbury College were set to be among the first in the country to see new wireless sensors in use to enhance teaching and learning across horticulture and agriculture. As part of the national 5G Innovation Regions project, the college installed a range of environmental sensors. The wireless sensors are linked through advanced connectivity to the estate’s new private, 5G network. They measure TSR (total solar radiation), PAR (photosynthetically active radiation), soil water potential, temperature relative humidity, leaf temperature, and leaf wetness. The data is transmitted and seen in real time through an interactive dashboard, allowing staff and students to monitor, understand and respond to changes in the growing environment.

Growing winning futures
The Brinsbury College community was filled with pride after taking home the top prize at the Jim Green Challenge for the third time in four years. The 2026 event, which took place at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, saw students make a model of a tree frog, a model of a working windmill and a scarecrow. They took spring bulbs which they had grown and crafted a pot to display them in and also made cakes which they decorated as frogs and displayed on the day. The college achieved success across multiple categories, securing the overall winners’ title after previous victories in 2023 and 2024. Bryony Paine, Lecturer in Foundation Programmes and Study Programme Leader for Gateway Four at Brinsbury College, said: “The students are proud to represent the college and win the competition again after their hard work and dedication.”
