ON THE COVER The Flat Iron Arts Building The Flat Iron Artists Association (FIAA) sponsors the popular First Friday art shows in Wicker Park Bucktown each month. With the support of the WPB SSA#33 and other generous sponsors, the Flat Iron Artists Association and local artists have become a driving force of revitalization for the tradition of art in Wicker Park Bucktown. Each month the Flat Iron, located at 1579 N. Milwaukee Avenue, hosts the Wicker Park Bucktown First Friday from 6-10pm. Crowds regularly gather for this neighborhood celebration that is a perfect introduction to the art scene, as well as a great way to experience this vibrant community’s dining, music and shopping.

For the inaugural 2010 First Friday on February 5th, the Flat Iron Artists will stage Now You See It and Now You Don’t. The walls of the Flat Iron Arts Building will act as a “canvas” for a continuous flow of linear art, making the interior into one massive painting, going in many directions. But the experience won’t last long: the painting, by a select group of Chicago artists, will be debuted, experienced and vanished in one evening. Later this season on March 6, 7 & 8, don’t miss the spring smARTshow, one of four seasonal festivals throughout the year presented by FIAA . News - What’s Happening At the start of a new decade we can see the ups and downs of the past ten years in our rearview mirror, and then look hopefully forward toward all that’s to come. Read on for highlights from Chicago’s latest winter features, and our usual lineup of art world profiles, including a new interview with an artist.

Letter from the Publisher It’s been two years since I took over CGN from founding publisher Natalie van Straaten, and since then I’ve learned more than I could have imagined – about the magazine itself, how to navigate details of running a small business, how to Tweet, and most of all, about Chicago’s art dealers, artists and supporters. My own art scene education is constant, and it’s also relatively easy to keep up with, since it’s part of a career I love. But for those who don’t follow the art world as part of their job, there’s so much to learn from so many sources that it can be overwhelming, as well as intimidating. I always hope that CGN can open minds and be a guide to discovering, enjoying, and maybe even collecting art. I talk about CGN often to people I meet, and part of the conversation frequently steers towards how to start collecting art and why. I try to first share my own stories about becoming interested in buying art, since buying a single piece is where everyone starts; before collectors are collectors, they’re buyers. Anyone can be a buyer, but what makes buying (and collecting) art more rewarding than other types of purchases is the human element – meeting artists, attending discussions, and visiting studios (these are not off-limits places – many artists are happy to show you work in progress and to just talk - see our studio listings on page 37.) Learning about contemporary work is a living subject; it is constantly changing and offering surprises as well as challenges. We continue to add to our profile series, most recently interviewing the Chicago-based artist, Dzine. Reading about where an artist’s work comes from, what piece first made a collector want to collect, or what event spurred a dealer to open a gallery can help make some sense of the art world. Art dealers are your educators, and they’re happy to answer even the most basic questions. They’re advocates for their artists, and they’re teachers to the rest of us. Ideally, dealers can dispel art world mysteries - not add to them, since they are on the front lines of information, particularly about emerging artists. Consider art education an ongoing course that meets for your whole life - in countless classrooms, with an endless number of teachers. You don’t have to be on your own when learning about art, and you don’t have to take a series of formal courses. But you do have to talk to people, keep your eyes open, and your curiosity on its toes.

CGN starts 2010 with a focus on the creative ground zero: the artist’s studio. Studios can be inspirational, mysterious workplaces, and they are at the beginning of the art chain of galleries, collectors, museums, and history. Art can’t get more personal than when it’s in progress in the studio, so if you have the chance to drop in and get to know an artist, take advantage of the opportunity. Stay warm these next few months, and have fun exploring the art scene!

Winter Highlights at the Cultural Center Winter is long on cold, and a little short on high profile art events in Chicago, but this season, some noteworthy exhibitions are taking place at the Chicago Cultural Center. Since you’re likely staying close to home in the next few months, make sure to visit the following shows, as well as special events, that honor these artists (and more). Opening receptions for both exhibitions are on Friday, January 29 from 6-8pm. Angel Otero: New Paintings and Sculpture

Hollis Sigler’s images are bright with searing colors - a visually appealing lure to viewers. With a little observation, Sigler’s familiar backdrops of dark and mysterious night skies and tumultuous elements throw her delicately drawn characters into an emotional spotlight, telling stories from Sigler’s own life - youthful years, as well as wrenching older days, during which she created her well-known series, Breast Cancer Journal: Walking with the Ghost of My Grandmothers.

Angel Otero’s name has been showing up all over the Chicago art scene for a little while now. Otero received great attention at New Insight at Art Chicago in 2008, his work was included in the MCA’s Constellations in 2009, and he was the featured artist at SAIC’s annual BareWalls in October 2009. Otero recently received his BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute, and he was one of only four awardees nationwide to receive the prestigious Leonore Annenberg Fellowship in the visual arts in 2009 - an award that will support Otero’s work for two years in New York. Otero is a very young artist, (ie: under 30) who creates deeply personal paintings and sculptures - drawing on experiences from growing up in Puerto Rico as well as training in Chicago. He masterfully uses multiple materials and textures to create work that is as visually stimulating as it is emotionally. This exhibition at the Cultural Center will be Otero's largest solo show to date, bringing together 12-15 new works, so for at least a few winter weeks, his work belongs to Chicagoans. Sigler’s vivid style reflects on passion, fear, romance, escape, desire, suburban entrapment, and dreams of fame; psychologically complex narratives each reveal the aftermath of a scenario but leave the viewer to solve the mystery of what has occurred. The exhibition, organized by the Rockford Art Museum in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, is curated by Patty Rhea, and shows more than 60 works dating from 1981 to 2001. Beyond the Cultural Center, Printworks Gallery in River North will have a show of Sigler’s prints in February, while nearby Carl Hammer Gallery will feature some of Sigler’s paintings as well as prints. And beyond the exhibition, an excellent series of events and discussions will be taking place.

Hollis Sigler: Expect the Unexpected

Collector Conversations In Sebastian Campos’s home on the 42nd floor of a downtown Chicago high-rise, the walls are covered in art, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the city. Artist Michael Scoggins’s Army Men, 2007, an oversized piece of paper with childlike scribblings of American soldiers chasing after innocent people, hangs on a wall between the kitchen and Sebastian’s office. Soccer Ball (Human Furriery Series), 1999, a deflated latex rubber soccer ball with nipple molds of Argentinean artist Nicola Costantino, sits on a shelf next to the collector’s flat-screen television. Black-tinted windows of the John Hancock Building interrupt a complete view of Lake Michigan. As he sips an after-work beer, Campos, who holds a BFA in Fine Art and an MAA in Arts Administration from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, takes me on a tour of his collection, revealing personal, cultural and art historical anecdotes about each piece. A polite, reserved man, Campos smiles shyly as he talks about acquiring an abstract time-lapse photograph by Chicago artist John Opera. When we arrive in his office, he tells me about a painting by emerging Houston-based artist Kent Dorn. Here, an ambiguously gendered person clad in a NO AGE t-shirt and short skirt flips the bird while decaying on a city sidewalk amongst thick globs of paint. The tour moves along swiftly with Campos stopping only momentarily to brush the black hair out of his face. How did you begin collecting art? My father, Luis T. Campos, has been collecting for thirty-some odd years, and he had a strong influence on my interest in art collecting. I grew up with his collection, which focuses on Latin American artists, op artists, kinetic artists and artists who work with color theory, like Josef Albers. Since I was a child, both my brother and I were collectors of things—matchbooks, baseball cards—so I always had ideas about collecting. As an undergraduate at the School of the Art Institute, I began collecting works from friends, trading art and sometimes buying it. But I didn’t go to SAIC to become a visual artist. I wanted to show and promote artists instead of actually create art. Collecting was one part of that. I began collecting maybe 10 years ago, and haven’t stopped since.

Tell me about your work as a curator & an art advisor. I began doing curatorial work when I was part of the Student Union Galleries (SUG) at SAIC. In May 2009, right after Art Chicago, I curated a show at Andrew Rafacz’s Sebastian Campos standing by Michael Scoggins’s, gallery called Army Men, 2007, 67 x 52," graphite on paper Accumulation, from the series My Good, My Evil which featured works by Adam Gondek (Chicago), Kenneth James Beasley (Houston) and Renee Lotenero (Los Angeles). I’ve curated other shows in Chicago, as well as Houston and Lima, Peru, where my family is originally from. As an art advisor, I work with a variety of clients, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, galleries here in Chicago and Houston, and private collectors. I like helping people get an idea of what they’d like to collect, the importance of collecting, and showing them works that they didn’t already know about. I also spend a lot of time managing my family’s collection in Houston.

What else promoted your decision to stop making art? I was more interested in listening to the artists who were discussing their works, doing critiques, and giving critiques. So I knew even before I went in to art school that I was going in to learn about how artists created works. How has your relationship with your father changed through art collecting? When I went to the School of the Art Institute for my undergraduate degree, my father started involving me more in his collection. That’s when our relationship began to change. He’d ask if I had seen any new things that he might like. It was no longer just father/son—it became more of a team looking at artwork in museums, and appreciating art in a different way. He became more interested in my interpretation of works and my opinion on art. What’s the focus of your collection? It’s all over the place. I first began collecting pop art prints. I was always a big fan of that movement, and really enjoyed Warhol. I had many opportunities to buy pop art prints, so I got pieces for a fraction of what they’re worth. And from there, I went into buying works on paper. Then I began focusing on more established artists, emerging young artists, and then photography. Now I’m most interested in painting and video. I focus my collection on Chicago artists first, and then artists from other cities like Houston and Los Angeles.

Studio Chicago This past October during Chicago Artists Month, a project called Studio Chicago quietly began. It runs through October 2010 and offers a packed, dynamic lineup to engage Chicago artists in particular, as well as curious Chicagoans & the international community. The programs that are a part of Studio Chicago, including everything from publications, talks and discussions, to studio tours and exhibitions, have been proposed by members of Chicago’s arts scene and will be developed throughout the year. The project’s goal is to build community and celebrate the working artist, while peeking behind doors to reveal their sites of creative production from historical and contemporary perspectives. Artists work in more mediums (and new media) than ever before, and the idea of a typical studio filled with canvases and paints is not as dominating as it once was. Today, artists may have workspace filled with multiple computer screens and digital editing tools. There are romantic notions about the artist’s studio, as well as very practical realities, and all sides will be examined through a range of core questions, such as “How and why does the studio matter to art and artists today?” and “What infrastructures are needed to sustain thriving art practice, and what role does the artist studio play within this infrastructure?” Several area institutions are core partners for Studio Chicago, including the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Columbia College, Gallery 400, Hyde Park Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and threewalls. Picturing the Studio at SAIC Picturing the Studio is presented by SAIC, and continues through February 13, at the Sullivan Galleries. 15 Minutes with a Dealer What most influenced your choice to become an Art Dealer? I started as a ceramic artist and came to Chicago to attend the graduate program at the School of the Art Institute. I decided to make the transition to art dealer to pursue that specific creative moment when one, as an artist, is rendered speechless by the presence of something extraordinary—the materialization of a thought before you. That intoxicating moment—the end that justified all means—unfortunately happened not as often in my studio as I wanted. I discovered, however, that I experienced that same thrill in the presence of art by artists like Xavier Toubes, Stephen DeStaebler, or Ruth Duckworth, to name a few. I realized I could be in the presence of what I find inspiring, yet still be an active participant in the development of an artist other than myself. Clay was at the root of this passion and I wanted to present it front-and-center and support its voice and legacy in our cultural landscape. I wanted to defuse some polarized concepts, such as beauty and relevance, or craftsmanship and content. The gallery recently moved from Pilsen East to the West Loop. What motivated your move? Opening my gallery in Pilsen East (The Chicago Arts District) in 2004 was fundamental to its conception and development. Being a young dealer, the Chicago Arts District offered me what no other neighborhood could—the opportunity to pursue my goals where I could simultaneously live and breathe art, while considerably lowering my overhead and noticeably raising my quality of life. My Halsted St. store-front space had peaceful gardens in the back to share with a community of artists also pursuing artistic interests, and the Chicago Arts District’s 2nd Fridays, and other joint-publicity events, tremendously supplemented my own efforts toward getting my gallery known and bringing people in. In the summer of 2008 I closed my Pilsen space. The beginning of the economic downturn was the perfect time to pause and reflect upon the experience that I’d gained, and to learn more about other areas of interest - the non-profit sector, fundraising and management. After a year gaining hands-on experience in those areas, I was ready and eager to push the gallery forward. This time I felt I needed to be alongside a concentration of Chicago’s established galleries. So, with a renewed passion, I reopened last fall in the West Loop. I’m still focusing on contemporary ceramics, but I’ve widened the scope to incorporate painting and works on paper addressing materiality and process. 15

When you dream “big,” where do you see Dubhe Carreño? It’s all about where I see the artists I represent, and witnessing the results of my ongoing partnerships with them, as well as with museum curators and critics. The ultimate reward is recognizing a young, talented artist and introducing him/her to the public - right after graduate school, or without any formal training. I hope to help them gain a position in the history of art by placing their work in international museum collections and in the private collections of individuals who value and treasure art’s presence in their lives. What’s up next at the gallery in 2010? I am very excited about my January exhibition. Ceramic sculptor Anne Drew Potter is exhibiting an intriguing and intelligent figurative installation entitled Le Cirque de L’Armée Rouge (Circus of the Red Army) January 8 - March 5, 2010. Loaded with references from contemporary literature, hierarchy’s social roles, and recent world history, Le Cirque de L’Armée Rouge alludes to the dynamics of “followers and leaders” through allegorical characters. Potter was educated both at the New York Academy and London’s Royal Academy, and she is a former resident of the very competitive Archie Bray Foundation. Potter is a great example of who I would like to promote in the gallery—emerging artists who, through visually and conceptually engaging work, utilize the medium of clay to express their voices and become part of the contemporary art dialogue. And a final note: my deepest condolences to those touched and inspired by the legacy of artist Ruth Duckworth, who lived 90 years and gave Chicago and the world the gift of her extraordinary talent. She has been an inspiration to me since the very beginning—when I discovered my interest in art—and I feel honored to have had the opportunity to meet her and spend time with her a few weeks before her passing. Artist Insights CGN introduces an addition to its art world personaility profile series, this one focusing on that creative force behind everything in our art community: the artist. Thomas Masters spoke with the artist Dzine about how his Chicago roots have shaped his life and his career. You didn’t grow up with wealth and privilege; can you talk about having come so far in a business where the odds of success are stacked against you? I have great memories of growing up in Brighton Park (on Chicago’s southwest side) in a very blue collar, middle class household. The old school lessons & qualities I learned there have stuck with me: honesty, integrity, loyalty, hard work, & making it a point to enjoy your life no matter what your financial situation is. What drives you in your artwork from your family and your early life? A healthy escapism really drives me to obsessively create a sort of magical, fantastic world. I didn’t grow up exposed to the art world at home or in elementary school, but I remember seeing these beautiful Monet, Picasso and Calder posters on the walls at school. Obviously this was before the Internet, so I had to educate myself about the art world at a very young age in order to know more about the images I encountered daily. I also experienced a lot through comic books & cartoons, which every child can relate to.

I love to work with galleries that are in this business for the long haul. Talk about recent show at Art Basel, Miami. Silvia Cubiña, Director of the Bass Museum, & I discussed working together for awhile. During her time as director of the influential Moore Space in Miami, she generated a lot of buzz amongst her peers & other artists. So, asking me to produce one of her first exhibitions at the museum was a big decision that I didn’t take lightly. I actually canceled a few gallery exhibitions to focus on this show. Out of the 8 large-scale installations, sculpture & paintings I produced for this exhibition, only one pre-existed. Otherwise, the work was made specifically for the museum. My goal was that it worked in a smart, cohesive manner.

The piece also served as the voice carrying a message from generations of Ukrainians across the river. The sculpture was fabricated in Chicago & shipped to the Biennale, where we presented in front of the Pavilion opening night on the canals of Venice. The project really was a lot of work to pull off, & it wiped me out physically & emotionally. When everything was finally over, I was so exhausted I needed to take at least a month off. Describe international projects you’ve done. I’ve been fortunate to create some great projects around the world, but I think a few stand out. For the installation I produced with Fundament Foundation in Tilburg, Netherlands, initially I was asked to create (along with a great cast of artists: Jessica Diamond, Franz Ackermann, Os Gemeos, Fabian Marcaccio) a large site-specific installation in the city center. We had to overcome some obstacles, &they didn’t have a large budget, but in the end, the piece was such a success that the city & the foundation kept it for 3 years instead of the intended 3 months. The other two project standouts are local: • The permanent mosaic installation commissioned by the City of Chicago for the Sedgwick El stop, made entirely of Venetian glass & mirror. • The 100 foot painting produced for the new McCormick West building’s permanent collection, curated by Paul Klein. Thoughts on the current economic downturn? I hope it weeds out a lot of the crap we’ve had to look at in certain galleries, & most art fairs. My hope is that the some of the exhibitions young museum curators are getting away with overrated, hyped, young ‘art stars’ & repetitive trendy group exhibitions - are over. I firmly believe that slow & steady wins the race. Honest work will always prevail. Any tips for youngsters coming up as artists? Create a unique language. Be concerned about the authenticity & quality of the work - the art world, & general public, will see through everything else. Will you always be an artist? Yes. A healthy, happy artist at that. What excites you right you now? Clarity.

• Anniversaries Chicago's longest running independent printmaking workshop, Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, just celebrated their 20th anniversary recently. For 20 years the CPC has been providing workshop facilities for artist / printmakers and hosting exhibitions, classes, open houses and free demonstrations to the public. CPC will be holding a series of celebratory events, including a $20 print sale in May.

We have a handful of new galleries to welcome to our pages this winter. Coalition Gallery, a project of the Chicago Artists Coalition, moved in on the Northside in the 2nd half of 2009. Avram Eisen Gallery joins us, also on the Northside in Lincoln Square. Jennifer Norback Fine Art, Inc. opened on Huron in River North and joins us this issue. From the suburbs we welcome The Elmhurst Artists' Guild Gallery, located in the Elmhurst Art Museum building. In Crystal Lake, IL, Lakeside Legacy Arts Park’s Dole and Sage Galleries have lots of programming, including a monthly First Friday event, to offer residents of the Western Suburbs. We welcome Art Encounter back to the Art Service section, so check their calendar of upcoming special art tours.

• Moves and Updates Stephen Daiter Gallery moved around the corner in River North, to 230 W. Superior. They’re now located on the 4th floor in the same building as Schneider Gallery, and the recently renamed Ken Saunders Gallery (formerly MarxSaunders). Ken Saunders continues to focus on fine contemporary glass. ebersb9 is now ebersmoore, and with their new name comes a new home; the gallery moved to the West Loop to 213 N. Morgan - not far from some Fulton Market gallery neighbors. Tony Wight Gallery has moved to 845 W. Washington as of January 2010. Their first show in the new location features Jason Salavon. We said goodbye to Loyola University’s Rogers Park Crown Center Gallery and to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s I-space at the end of 2009. Both had an admirable history of featuring excellent artwork and programs by university students. We wish their directors, staff and artists well, and look forward to their next endeavors.

Artist Awards, Commissions & Exhibitions Elsewhere This winter there are a few not-to-miss exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center. Hollis Sigler is being honored with a major retrospective. Printworks will also be featuring Sigler’s works on paper, and Carl Hammer Gallery will be featuring her paintings. Kavi Gupta Gallery artist Angel Otero also has his largest solo show to date at the Cultural Center. Barbara Crane’s exhibition at Stephen Daiter Gallery concluded in 2009, but her Cultural Center retrospective ends January 10. Stephen Daiter Gallery photographer Martin Parr has a February show at the gallery and also will be part of In the Vernacular at The Art Institute of Chicago. The newest inductees into Union League Club of Chicago’s Distinguished Artist Program are Roy Boyd Gallery artist, painter William Conger, and Rhona Hoffman Gallery photographer Dawoud Bey. Packer Schopf Gallery artist Michael Dinges’s mosaic installation is now installed at the Fullerton El Station. The infinity tunnel-like installation is intended to be a calming, yet stimulating addition to the busy El stop. Gallery artist Ian Weaver has an exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum through March 7th. In his Document series, Weaver riffs on the highly illusionistic, centuries-old trompe l’oeil, and recreates in exacting detail the mundane yet vital pieces of paper that affirm our identity and track all of us throughout our lives. Woman Made Gallery is hosting its 13th annual International Open exhibition in March. The exhibition features women artists from around the world. 17

Answer: While the words “modern” and “contemporary” are often interchangeable in the English language, they are quite different from each other in the art world. A simple rule of thumb would be: • Modern Art dates from Impressionism -- or some time in the late nineteenth century, depending on which “ism” you wish to include -- up to the 1960s. • Contemporary Art usually covers work created from the mid-twentieth century up to now – art of our time. But there are all sorts of overlapping chronological dates, periods or styles that distinguish the two broad terms. Within them are: expressionism, realism, modernism, post modernism, photo realism, minimalism, abstraction…to name only a few. Often, museums or institutions will house Modern and Contemporary art together. For example, The Art Institute has described its new Modern Wing as providing “a new home for the museum’s collection of 20th and 21st century art, including the museum’s world-renowned collections of modern European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, architecture and design, and photography. Indeed it is a repository of both Modern and Contemporary treasures. Once there for a visit, the galleries within the museum are divided to better showcase the different types, styles or periods of art. The Museum of Modern Art in New York was established in 1929. It, too, includes a combination of modern and contemporary art in its collections despite its “Modern” name. Some institutions clearly define their contents with a specific name. For example, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, established in 1966, has in its collections work from 1945 to the present, with an emphasis on late 20th and 21st century works.
