The City of Sturgis is defined by its duality. It sits on the borderlands between the Black Hills and the prairie – serving as both a mountain town and a ranch community. By all accounts, our town is a rural one with just 6,700 residents, and yet, our resources and infrastructure stretch each year to accommodate the 400,000 to 600,000 guests who attend our annual motorcycle rally. This dichotomy is replicated in our diverse population of creative intellectuals and pragmatic entrepreneurs. Great schools. Safe neighborhoods. Growing economy. World-class public recreational space. Stunning landscapes. This town is special. And we’re making concerted efforts to make sure we remain an ideal place to visit, work, play, and live.

He enjoys spending hours out in the dark photographing the night sky or photographing animals in nature. For this photo he had an idea to create a photograph by using multiple elements that relate to each other and at the same time were iconic to South Dakota. Bear Butte mountain, locally known by the name Mato Paha is sacred for many indigenous tribes and a place for spiritual and religious ceremonies. Meanwhile the American bison species that roams freely around this area is revered and respected highly by the people. It is now the national mammal of United States and represents a will to survive and power to overcome adversity. So this double exposure photograph tries to capture essence of a beautiful and spiritual relationship between man, animal and nature. Bear Butte mountain is a place of prayer, meditation, and peace and is located 5 miles northeast of Sturgis. Herds of bison can be seen roving the base of this mountain. Fort Meade & Its Museum Fort Meade was established during the winter of 1878-79 by units of the 1st and 11th Infantry and the reorganized 7th Cavalry. The mission of the 10 company post was to provide military protection for the gold seekers and settlers of the Northern Black Hills. General Phil Sheridan, famed Civil War Calvary, reportedly selected the picturesque site for the new post. The site is located about two miles northwest of nearby Bear Butte. The history is deep here. It was on the parade grounds that the “Star Spangled Banner” was first played in an official capacity for evening retreat. Long before it became the National Anthem, those present at its playing snapped to attention. It was at Fort Meade that the Cavalry horse, Comanche, the only military survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn – was officially retired with military honors. It was also at Fort Meade that the controversial Major Marcus A. Reno was cashiered from service by court martial for scandalous behavior. Many celebrated frontier Army units saw service at Fort Meade, including the 4th Cavalry which was headquartered there for over 20 years. It outlived all other frontier posts of the Upper Missouri West surviving as a military installation until 1944 when it became a Veterans Administration Hospital. It

still operates as such today, serving the mental and physical health of those who served America. The campus also encompasses the scenic Fort Meade Recreation Area. Covering 6,693 acres, it is a mix of prairie and forest with miles of picturesque trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horses. A scenic Back-Country byway runs through it. The area is also full of historic markers commemorating the area’s significance including the Fort Meade Post Cemetery. Many remnants of the historic peace-keeping old post have been faithfully preserved. Numerous mementos of the colorful units and troopers who served here are on display at the Fort Meade Museum. The military buildings and residences have been retained under a Historical Preservation Designation and are maintained by the Veterans Administration that now occupies the post. The museum is a non-profit association dedicated to preserving the history of the Fort Meade military post and units that served there from 1877 to 1944. The Fort Meade Museum is open daily from mid-May through September with hours of operation from 9am to 5pm. The Black Hills National Cemetery has fulfilled its role as a place of rest and respect for America’s military. Since the first four burials during World War II in 1948, the remains of nearly 24,000 service members and their spouses have been entombed here.

The Black Hills National Cemetery encompasses 102 acres just south of Sturgis. One of just 146 cemeteries in the nation designated as a “United States National Cemetery,” it serves as the final resting place for military personnel, veterans and their spouses. The concept of a national cemetery dates back to July 17, 1862 when Congress enacted legislation that would authorize President Abraham Lincoln to purchase cemetery grounds that would be used as national cemeteries for soldiers who died while in service to the country. In 1873, all honorably discharged veterans became eligible for burial in there. In 1947 Congressman Francis Case endorsed the concept of a regional national cemetery. With the support of various South Dakota veterans’ organizations, a site just outside of Sturgis, on the Fort Meade Military Reservation, was selected. In 1948 Fort Meade National Cemetery was dedicated. Just one year later, its name was changed to Black Hills National Cemetery to avoid confusion with the existing active military installation in Maryland and in recognition of the area’s historical significance. United States Senator Francis H. Case, the man who endorsed the idea then dedicated the place, is among those resting here. He hoped it would

become the “Arlington of the West,” and it has. Since its dedication, the Black Hills National Cemetery has fulfilled its role as a place of rest and respect for America’s military. Bear Butte State Park Formed millions of years ago when molten lava pushed upward into the overlying sedimentary rock, this igneous rock formation is a sacred site to several tribes throughout North America and portions of Canada. It is known as “Mata Paha” or Bear Mountain to the Lakota People. The Cheyenne call it “Noahvose.” Known for its holiness and mystery, Bear Butte has acted as a place of prayer and reflection for more than 4,000 years. Even today, traditional Native ceremonies are held here throughout the year. If you choose to hike the site, be respectful of its significance. You’ll see prayer cloths and ties. They vary by tribe and band, but all are sacred and are not to be photographed or touched. With its small herd of bison and incredible vistas, Bear Butte is an ideal place to experience nature and show respect for the Native tribes who have worshiped here for centuries.

Motorcyclists have long been a symbol of American freedom, spirit and adventure and Sturgis has been an iconic backdrop for the life. It was this passion that sparked the flame on the first race and rally back in 1938. JC “Pappy” Hoel and the Jackpine Gypsies (the first club sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association), put together a motorcycle flat track on the horse track in Sturgis. It attracted 9 racers and about 200 spectators, a successful and exciting event that grew to hundreds of thousands of Rally goers and hundreds of both pro and amateur racers! Pappy’s story is famous and though it is a great one, there are many truly inspiring, interesting and amazing stories in the world of motorcycling-then and today. At the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, you will see motorcycles in the early days of development to today’s newest technology. Walk through time by the stories of the men, women and organizations of the Hall of Fame and experience the history of America’s first and most famous motorcycle rallies. Whether you are a rider or not, you will find that American spirit and have your own Black Hills adventure at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. It’s the site where hundreds of thousands gather each August to celebrate motorcycles and biker culture. The rest of the year, it’s a traditional Main Street serving the Sturgis community. Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ Our signature event, the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ is recognized around the world as the largest event of its kind. For one week each August, a half million motorcycle riders and enthusiasts descend on Sturgis and the Black Hills. Its trajectory to fame was an improbable one. In 1936, Clarence “Pappy” Hoel purchased an Indian Motorcycle Franchise in Sturgis, SD. Soon after, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club was formed. In 1938, the club held what would be known as the first Rally on August 14th with a race of 9 participants and a small audience. In 1949, Main Street was blocked off for the first time in conjunction with a 2 hour awards ceremony. It grew slowly, albeit steadily from there. In 1961, the Gypsies introduced the Hill Climb and Motocross races and in 1964 the move was made to close Main Street for a full three days for motorcycle parking. However, it wasn’t until 1974 that a vendor set up in the Sturgis Auditorium for the first time. By 1979, the now sev-

en-day event issued its first temporary vendor licenses. There were nine. Local man, Tom Monahan’s donation of the artwork for the Official Rally Logo to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce occurred in 1986. This was key in the branding of the event. Since then, the Rally has grown to encompass huge concerts, worldclass entertainment, and hundreds of vendors. Harley-Davidson Rally Point on the corner of Main Street and Harley Davidson Way features a beautiful sculpture created by Sturgis area resident and South Dakota State Artist Laureate Dale Lamphere. The work commemorates Monhan’s contribution to the Rally and, more importantly, his work for and with the Sturgis Community. In 2015, The City of Sturgis was proud to have celebrated the 75th annual event with a record attendance of an amazing 730,000+ participants spanning the Rally. Starting in 2017, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will officially be a 10-day long event, and will always begin on the first Friday of August. The 77th Annual Rally will take place August 4-13, 2017.

With access points to many of the Black Hills National Forest motor-vehicle use trails just minutes from Sturgis, you can take your ATV or 4-wheeler exploring the Hills. Feeling especially adventurous? Try rock-crawling through some of the rocky, winch-mandated trails in the area. The Black Hills National Forest regional offices have official forest service maps and motor vehicle use maps available. The maps provide information for all Black Hills National Forest area trails which can be used for various off-road vehicles. You can pick up the map while you’re purchasing your use permit which is required for all off-road vehicles.

Ice Fishing Many people have never experienced fishing except during the summer. Ice fishing is a fantastic winter sport and an excellent family activity. Popular ice fishing locations near Sturgis include Pactola Reservoir, French Creek, Spearfish Creek, Spring Creek, and Bear Butte Lake. Always make sure the ice is thick enough before walking or driving on it: at least 6 inches for walking and 10 inches for driving. Areas that are dark are not thick enough. Ice fishing has become very popular in western South Dakota in recent years. The amazing scenery, abundant wildlife and fantastic fishing have fisherman flocking to western South Dakota during the winter months.

Snowmobiling The Black Hills Area is a snowmobiler’s dream destination. With over 350 miles of marked trails that open be-

ginning December 1 and are groomed from December 15 through March 31, you are bound to find sights you will not encounter anywhere else. These marked trails wind through pine forests and open meadows and climb up to 6,000 feet in elevation, providing spectacular summit lookouts. This trail system has been ranked in the top 10 places to ride in the nation. With 1.3 million acres of national forest lands to explore, it is unlikely you will encounter much traffic. And unlike some other destinations in the Black Hills, there is little worry of dangerous crevasses or avalanches. There are several spots on the trail system to stop and enjoy nature or grab a bite to eat and relax. Didn’t bring your sled? Snowmobile rentals are available in the area and average about $150 per day. Many retailers offer half-day, single-day, weekend, and full week packages.

Network of Trails

Main Street to the Trails – A onemile trail has been added to connect the Fort Meade Recreation Area and the 111 mile Centennial Trail to Sturgis’ core. Coined as the Main Street to the Trails, the path can be accessed via the far east end of Main Street at Lion’s Club Park. Fort Meade Recreation Area – The Fort Meade Recreation Area is composed of approximately 6,700 acres of forest and grasslands, The area is managed to protect, preserve, and enhance its cultural, historic, recreational, and wildlife values. Many trails offer both scenic views of Bear Butte and the prairie, as well as, the Black Hills to the south.

Fort Meade National Back Country Byway – The 5-mile gravel road from Exit 34 off I-90 to Fort Meade is designated as the National Back Country Byway. While on this road you will find many noteworthy sites such as: the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Chapel, Curley Grimes’ Grave, Sidney to Deadwood Stagecoach and Wagon Freight Trail, and Calvary Jumps. The Fort Meade Post Cemetery is the only intact cavalry cemetery in the western United States. 119 of the 200 burials in this cemetery took place prior to 1900. The first burial was recorded in 1878 and the last in 1943. The road is also home to the site of Camp Fechner which was the site of a Civilian Conservation Camp. Established in the 1930s, it was the district headquarters for the 16 CCC camps in the Black Hills. Additionally, Camp Fechner was used to house German prisoners-of-war in 1945. Today, only a few foundations remain to mark the site of the headquarters camp. The temporary wooden buildings were torn down when the program was abandoned. The byway ends at Highway 34 and the entrance to Fort Meade. Alkali Creek Trailhead & Recreation Site – Camping is allowed at both the Alkali Creek Trailhead and Alkali Creek Horse camp. The camp is open year-

round with a fee required May 15th through September 30th. Electric and sewer hookups are not available. Twenty-two picnic areas are available at the Alkali Creek Trailhead. Restrooms and water are available. A one-half mile self-guided trail runs behind the Alkali Creek trailhead. Bear Butte State Park – Two hiking trails wind their way around the slopes of Bear Butte. The Ceremonial Trail is a one-mile loop that branches into an additional one-mile hike to the top of the mountain. At the summit, you’ll discover a breathtaking view of four states. Please stay on the trails while hiking on the mountain. In respect for the religious activities that take place on the mountain, the park is managed for day-use only. Trails are open to visitors from 8am to 7pm. The park also serves as the trailhead for the 111-mile Centennial Trail. An entrance fee is required year-round. Centennial Trail – The Centennial Trail is the perfect way to experience the Black Hills for an hour, a day or a week. Known as Trail No. 89, it is a lasting legacy of South Dakota’s 1989 centennial year of statehood. Its 111mile length explores the diversity of South Dakota. This is the longest trail in the Black Hills, with more than two dozen access points at intervals of 3 to 10 miles. You will experience old growth forests, sunny meadows dotted with wildflowers, towering granite crags and remote canyons.

Location: Bear Butte to Wind Cave National Park Length: 111 miles Elevation: 3200 to 5600 Difficulty: Easy to moderate City Bike Path – Sturgis has over 10 miles of bike path in the city limits. The most popular trail heads are located at the Sturgis Municipal Park on the east end of Lazelle Street, Centennial Park behind McDonald’s on the west end of Lazelle Street, and the City Fairgrounds located on Ballpark Road. Dogs are allowed on the path but must be on a leash at all times.

Future of the Trails The already incredible trail system is expanding. Scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2018, a modern stacked loop trail system will tie into the BLM 7th Cavalry Trails and South Dakota Centennial Trail - a designated National Recreation Trail. This multiple use non-motorized trail system can be accessed directly from multiple trailheads within the city limits of Sturgis. Much of this space has never before been open to the public and will offer a wilderness-like experience with an urban interface. Created through partnerships with the City of Sturgis, United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and the Black Hills Trails 501c3 volunteer organization, this expansion will offer further economic diversification to the local economy. It is supported by the National Trails Act and South Dakota Outdoor Recreation Plan.

Looking Ahead

Downtown Revitalization In recent years, the community of Sturgis has made a concerted effort to revitalize its downtown core. From the development of a Business Improvement District (BID) and the Downtown Sturgis Foundation, to several ordinances passed by the City Council, coordinated efforts are targeting economic development and a year-round, thriving Main Street and downtown.

New year-round businesses are moving into Sturgis. Established businesses are expanding. The momentum is positive. In 2013, Gov. Dennis Daugaard named Sturgis as South Dakota’s large community of the year.

New year-round businesses are moving in. Established businesses are expanding. The momentum is positive. In 2013, Sturgis was named South Dakota’s large community of the year by Governor Dennis Daugaard. In 2015, on the corner of Main Street and Harley-Davidson Way (formerly 2nd Street) Harley-Davidson Rally Point was constructed. This downtown space will be utilized by Harley-Davidson in the weeks surrounding the Rally. The remainder of the year, the beautiful outdoor venue is being used for both planned events, as well as, informal gatherings. It acts as both a year-round gathering place for riders and motorcycle enthusiasts, as well as, a space for the community and people of Sturgis to host events and gather. Photo: Rainee Lisko

With an expected completion date in June of this year, Main Street will have another update including a beautiful new street, lighting, sidewalks, and utility infrastructure. If you’re here

before June, our Main Street businesses are open with plenty of parking on cross streets and private lots. Stop in!

Sturgis Economic Development Corp The Sturgis Economic Development Corp (SEDC) is the area’s business relocation expert. As the private, non-profit economic development organization serving the City of Sturgis, Meade County and the State of South Dakota, SEDC is the regional “go to” source for assistance with business relocation, expansion and start-up needs. The 45-acre Sturgis Industrial Park, located off Interstate 90 at Exit 30, offers certified site-ready parcels for industrial and commercial development. The Park has a UPS distribution facility on-site and is home to South Dakota’s largest firearms manufacturing cluster. In addition to the prosperous firearms industry, metals-related custom manufacturing for the agriculture and motorcycle industries thrives in Sturgis. The Sturgis Industrial Park houses the machine tool technology classroom which provides high school students the opportunity to train on-site with classwork and internship opportunities. This hands-on training also provides manufacturers a direct source for qualified workers. As the Meade County seat, Sturgis enjoys a healthy retail business mix.

Prospective employers are drawn to the region’s stable workforce and technical training opportunities in this “right-to-work” state. Internet marketing companies benefit from efficient regional and global distribution, as well as, cost-effective support staff facilities and operations. In addition to industrial development, SEDC recently expanded their focus to include commercial and residential development. This is beginning to show great dividends. Over the past three years, 35 businesses have either expanded or opened, resulting in 340 direct jobs. Four housing developments are adding 272 new rooftops, a 2.2% annual growth rate. Two new state-licensed child care facilities recently opened, allowing the community to serve over 270 children and families. Additionally, the local school district and healthcare system are undergoing extensive expansions to accommodate the growing community. SEDC administers three revolving loan funds and partners with local, state and national lenders to design competitive financing and incentive packages which assist businesses with expansion and start-up needs. Creative options for sale, lease and build-to-suit are tailored to meet specific needs of businesses and are negotiable based on job creation and economic impact. Relocation assistance, workforce grants and property tax forgiveness are samples of the attractive incentives that could be available to qualifying businesses. For more information, visit the SEDC website http://sturgisdevelopment. com/ or Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/SturgisDevelopment/.

The Trademark and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. Every August, approximately half a million motorcycle enthusiasts roar into Sturgis, South Dakota for the annual the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™. Over the years, a world-recognized brand has grown up around the event. Through this brand recognition and

royalties generated from the Rally-related Sturgis® trademarks, the city of Sturgis is rejuvenating its economy. This provides a chance for the small town of 6,700 to benefit from a popular event to improve the community for the locals and for its visitors.

Looking Ahead

The licensing program was greatly enhanced when a local, well-respected businessman, the late Tom Monahan, created and designed the well-known Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ “Official Logo” in 1986, which he donated to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce to help promote Rally and support community projects. Through the generation of royalties earned by the sale of licensed rally goods by third parties, local school programs, elderly meal programs, arts and culture programs and other nonprofit charities have received much needed funding that is hard to obtain in small rural communities. In 2010, the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce realized it needed to devote more attention to local commerce and business, so it stepped away from the administration of the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ trademarks and assigned its rights to the Sturgis®-related trademarks, including the Monahan “Official Logo” to Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally, Inc. (SMRi).   SMRi is a non-profit organization with a volunteer board comprised of members who represent Sturgis Rally-oriented businesses, non-rally Black Hills-area businesses, the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, the City of Sturgis, the licensees, motorcycle industry partners and tourism industry representatives. Its vision is to use the Sturgis® marks to enhance the rally and provide a charitable return to the local Sturgis and Black Hills area communities, which is why SMRi closely administers and enforces its rights in the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ trademarks.  For more information on the Sturgis® trademarks, contact Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ Inc. (SMRi) at 605-3475336 or on the web at http://www. sturgismcrallyinc.com
