THE VALUE OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY PROGRAMS Educational based activity programs are an extension of the classroom and an integral part of the ongoing education of our young people. While participating in educational activities, students learn valuable lifelong lessons that can be as important as those taught in the classroom. Participation in educationally based activities programs: • Enriches the high school experience • Promotes citizenship/sportsmanship • Instills pride in communities • Teaches teamwork and self-discipline • Facilitates a student’s development The goals for the SDHSAA Foundation are: • To help ensure the future of educationally based high school activities in South Dakota. • To maintain and enhance participation opportunities for the nearly 37,500 South Dakota high school students involved in SDHSAAsanctioned activities annually. • To increase statewide awareness regarding the benefits of participation in educationally based high school activities. The VISION of the Foundation is to use the interest generated to maintain and enhance programs and fund special initiatives that are important to the SDHSAA and its member schools. The long range goal of the SDHSAA Foundation is to grow through SDHSAA-driven programs and contributions from individuals, businesses, and foundations in order to provide a more stable financial base for member schools and the students of tomorrow.

Welcome On behalf of the SDHSAA Board of Directors and the SDHSAA Staff, we welcome you to the Girls’ Class B State Championships.
Please take time to enjoy the venue, the city and make an effort to thank the people putting on these SDHSAA events.
The experiences of today will shape who we become tomorrow. Although one day or one event in our lives does not define who we are, it does have an impact. The true test of one’s character is how they react to and handle adversity. The reality is not all students will experience winning a state championship, but their hard work, dedication and resiliency will enable them to be successful in their life experiences, win or lose.
Best of luck to everyone participating in these SDHSAA events. The positive experiences you have will last a lifetime. Moe Ruesink Chairman, SDHSAA Board of Directors
Sportsmanship is vital in all SDHSAA and NFHS events. As a fan, your words and actions do make a difference. Do your part to enhance our SDHSAA events. Be positive in the success of these events as they are an extension of the classroom for the students. My challenge to all fans and parents is to be supportive of your programs all season, every season. When the day comes that you have no vested interest or children playing of your own, I encourage you to keep coming to athletic and fine arts events to support your local team and the students who participate. Be a difference maker!

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACHES
Gus Kolb Gus was a 1943 Leola High School graduate and participated in all sports. He graduated in 1951 from South Dakota State. His coaching career began in Ree Heights, SD in 1954 and he coached all sports. Girls’ basketball was not an official sport then, but he coached the girls to two undefeated seasons. His all sports coaching stops included Forestburg, Egan, and Deubrook. However, his years as boys’ basketball coach at Cheyenne (known both as Cheyenne Agency and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte) were when he became a well-known and respected coach. His 1958 team won 32 games in a row and finished third in the state. The 1961 team was 20-9 and placed fifth. But most important in the history of South Dakota basketball was his 1959 Cheyenne team. At the Huron arena they captured the imagination of all South Dakotans and won the State B Tournament. Their flashy style of play was clearly the talk of basketball. Stories about Gus abounded. As examples: Did he originate the zone press in basketball? Was he the only South Dakotan to receive the national “Pop Warner” award? Bottom line: His basketball record in fourteen years was a terrific 234 wins vs 112 losses.
Randy Stanton – Rapid City Randy has a great hobby that began as a way to stay connected with high school athletics. This hobby started shortly after high school graduation at the urging of his high school coaches who persuaded him to register as a sports official both football and basketball in 1971.. Soon to follow that same year he officiated his first high school football game and later that fall his first high school basketball game. A game he was fortunate to work with the high school basketball coaches that encouraged him to register. He feels honored during his almost 49 years of officiating to have been selected to work 28 SDHSAA state basketball tournaments with 6 championship games, 4 SDHSAA state football championship games, approximately 30 Lakota Nation Invitation Basketball tournaments with 5 championship games, a 10 year span as the Region Basketball Coordinator, and just recently being chosen as the 2019-2020 NFOA Girls Basketball Official of the Year. Randy would like to express a huge thanks to his family, wife Sandy, who married into this hobby and has been his greatest support, and his children who competed at Rapid City Central. Melissa a high school and college gymnast, and son Reggie who competed in high school basketball and golf, and a granddaughter Alexia. During the kids’ high school careers he was fortunate to be able to adjust his officiating schedule so he could watch their high school activities, for that he is very thankful. All of this would not be possible without the mentoring of many officials that took him along as a young referee, and continuing today with the many trips with the best officials from across the state, many of whom are and will continue to be his best friends. He still looks forward to game day and the chance to continue to give back to the high school athletics that we all love and to pay forward this opportunity to share in, and promote officiating SDHSAA activities.
Hall of shrine
Randy feels humbled and honored to be selected as the 2019-2020 South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Shrine Inductee as an official.
Kevin Phillips – Rapid City Kevin was a three sport athlete in Edgeley, ND, playing basketball, football, and track. He announced his first girls’ basketball game while he was in high school in 1980. While in high school, he wrote sports stories for the Edgeley Mail newspaper. When he attended college at North Dakota State University, he became the sports editor of the school paper “The Spectrum”. He started working radio in Fargo in 1982 and has ever since. His first play-by-play was a North Dakota State/ University of Minnesota baseball game He took over as radio Sports Director at KNUJ/KXLP in New Ulm and Mankato, Minnesota and was the sideline reporter for Mankato State University football team. From 1989 to the present, he has done a morning radio show with three local morning sportscasts each day. As near as he can tell that’s over 32,000 sportscasts. He went back to public address announcing at Douglas High School in the early 90’s, followed by stints at Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Central. As of 2019, he is back at Douglas and loving it. He is also the PA announcer for basketball games at South Dakota Mines. Kevin announces all SDHSAA tournaments that take place in Rapid City and hopes to continue for many years. He is a member of the Rapid City Sports Officials group and has been inducted into the Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife Marcy, have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Mike cherishes the basketball memories and friendships he has developed with his fellow referees, coaches, athletes, school administrators, and the SDHSAA. Mike and his wife, Rocky, live and work in Rapid City. They have two grown sons, Ryan and Chris.
Ed Marts – Ed graduated from Bonesteel in 1979 and attended
Mitchel Vo Tech for Electrical Construction and Maintenance. He started officiating while attending Vo Tech for Intramural sports. In 1982 he started refereeing high school basketball for the next 15 years, he took a short break and resumed officiating in 2000. Ed feels lucky to have been trained by the legends of Randy DeWolf, Mike Dacey, Ken Orth, and Hawk Mayer. It was an honor to be selected to officiate his first state tournament in 1990. It’s been a great privilege to get to officiating for so many years. One of the best things is when people come up to me and say I reffed them and now I am reffing their kids. One of the best reasons for officiating is getting to watch the great talent we have here in South Dakota from junior high to high school and some to their college careers. Thank you to all for this opportunity and honor.
Greg Warren – Greg was born and raised in the state of Wash-
ington. In 1974 at the urging of his Dad, Greg started officiating elementary school basketball. He was 14 when he joined the Kent Parks Recreation Officials Association. Greg officiated basketball and umpired baseball for them for four years. In 1978, he joined the Washington State High School Activities Association. He officiated 9th grade, 10th grade and JV basketball games. At that time also working the men’s amateur league. He belonged to that association for three years. In 1981, Greg moved to Burke, SD where his parents had moved two years earlier. He met his wife, Janell. In 1984, he started officiating grade school and middle school games for the Burke, Bonesteel and Gregory school systems. After the 1985 season, long time basketball official and Burke High School Principal, Randy DeWolf recruited him.

In 1986, he joined the SDHSAA as a high school basketball official. He became certified in 1988. Over the last 34 years he has officiated many district and regional games. He also served as a Region 11 coordinator for many years. The thing he is most proud of in his career is all of the officials which he has helped get started and mentored. Some of them have gone on to work State Tournaments. Greg also officiated high school football for 25 years with the same crew. He has been a baseball umpire in South Dakota for 34 years. One of the best things you get out of officiating is the friends you make. Greg would like to mention a few people that helped him get started and mentored him – Sid Faulkner form Washington state, Randy DeWolf from Burke, the late Mike Dacy and Kenny Orth from Gregory, Dwight Cluff from Scotland and last but not least some of my long time partners – Ed Martz, Jason Lagge, Matt Clark and Quint Garnos. He has been very lucky and fortunate to have his wife, Janell and two kids, Aaron and Tara Lynn support his officiating. For that he would like to thank them, without their support and understanding he would not have been able to accomplish this.

NFHS National Distinguished Active Official Of the Year Award The National Federation of High Schools annually honors active officials who have made vast contributions to officiating in their respective state. These officials are selected based on their officiating merits and the impact they have made in high school sports. The NFHS National Distinguished Girls Basketball Active Official of the Year is Randy Stanton, Rapid City Randy has been very fortunate to referee high school football and basketball for 49 years, beginning as a registered official in 1971 in Wyoming. During that time, he has been lucky enough to be selected to work several state events, including 28 State basketball tournaments with 6 championships games, 4 SDHSAA Football Championships, 30 Lakota National Basketball Tournaments, Ten years as Region Basketball Coordinator, and 2019-20 Hall of Shrine Inductee as SD Basketball Coaches Association official. Randy wants to express a huge thank you to his wife, Sandy who married into this hobby and has been his greatest supporter, his children who competed at Rapid City Central, Melissa a high school and college gymnast, son Reggie who competed in high school basketball and golf, and a granddaughter Alexia. During the kids’ high school careers, he was fortunate to be able to adjust his officiating schedule so he
could watch their high school activities, for that he is very thankful. All of this would not be possible without the mentoring of many officials along the way and continuing today working games with the best officials from across the state, many of whom are and will continue to be his best friends. Randy is humbled and honored to be selected as the 20192020 NFOA Girls’ Basketball Official of the Year.

spirit of su Award
IN THE MEMORY OF SUANNE BIG CROW - 1974-1992
The “Spirit of Su” Award will be given this year to an outstanding young athlete who exemplifies SuAnne Big Crow’s life. SuAnne, a senior at the Pine Ridge High School, was killed in a car accident while driving to the 1992 Miss Basketball Award Banquet in Huron. SuAnne was best known for her accomplishments on the basketball court, but SuAnne’s academic record and her community involvement were equally important to her. She stood against drugs and alcohol and always talked of making life better for those around her. SuAnne recognized the need for more positive role-models and chose to become one. Realizing the value of an education, she maintained a near 4.0 grade point average. SuAnne’s lifestyle is an inspiration to not only the Lakota people but also to non-Indian people who have responded to her passing with tributes, poems and letters expressing the positive impact
Year 1993-1994 1994-1995 1995-1996 1996-1997 1997-1998 1998-1999 1999-2000 2000-2001 2001-2002 2002-2003 2003-2004 2004-2005 2005-2006
she made on their lives. SuAnne possessed an insight far beyond her years. She presented herself as a young Lakota lady who was proud of her heritage and an equal to all. The following is a quote from a speech she made to an eighth grade graduating class: “High school can be the most fun time of your life. But don’t lose sight of the main purpose . . . an education. It is the key to a better life for our people.” SuAnne The “Spirit of Su” Award will be given during half time of the championship game. SPONSORED BY THE SOUTH DAKOTA FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE.

spirit of six Award This rare photograph of the Cobbler cheerleaders was taken by Dave Cross, member of the Rapid City High School newspaper, The Pine Needle, in March, 1968, before their departure for Sioux Falls and the State “A” Basketball Tournament. Lined up in front of the large twin Beechcraft are the six cheerleaders and three adults who, three days later, would die while the pilot was attempting to land at the same airport. The plane burst into flames after skidding off the runway. Pictured, left to right are: Shirley Landstrom, Kay McNutt, Terry Blanton, Jan Glaze, Mrs. Ivan Landstrom, Gail Flohr, Mrs. Dorothy Lloyd (squad advisor), Diane McCLuskey and Ivan Landstrom who was the pilot.
Since the disaster, the South Dakota Peace Officer’s Association has presented trophies to cheerleaders considered best on crowd control, dress, sportsmanship and enthusiasm at the boys’ basketball tournaments. The Ladies Auxiliary expanded the program to include “Spirit of Six” trophies for the cheerleaders judged tops at the state girls’ basketball events.
