About RQHBA The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from 16 member ranches and one guest consignor. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year, before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.

Organization Goals & Membership The goal of the RQHBA is to conduct a Select Sale to showcase the Breeders’ top weanlings, yearlings, started and finished performance horses. Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 16 ranches in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana that are RQHBA members, there are also 28 invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.

Sale Requirements All horses sold at the RQHBA are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian on sale day. All foals are halter broke and gentle for the sale. The foals are presented in the showcase at 10 a.m. so buyers can compare foals side by side before the sale. Riding horses will also preview before the sale.

Quality of Horses As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All of the ranches have more horses at home like those offered here so if you see something you like, please contact that ranch. Ranch visits are always welcome.

Welcome! Thank you for attending the 15th Annual Select Performance & Showcase Sale of the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association. As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your high expectations. This is the sale where you can buy with confidence and find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, show ring, trail or out on the range. Come to the sale grounds at 9 a.m. for the Ranch Horse Futurity, and see sale horses in action and compare foals side by side at 10 a.m. during the Ranch Horse Exhibition and Showcase. Visit with breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2016 RQHBA Futurities. You will find members and guest consignor’s names and phone numbers here in the catalog. Please feel free to give any of the association members or guest consignors a call about their horses. All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like these that are represented at the sale. Your visit is always welcome! We hope to see you on sale day!

Horses are our life…

Merrill Ranch Shawn & Leslie Merrill • 605-993-6144 24221 Sage Creek Road • Wall, SD 57790 merrillranch.com • slmerrill@gwtc.net

After the loss of our great stud Pat Cowan last yr. Streakin Hotrod is now the center of our breeding program. He is a WPRA, 1D Barrel horse and USTRA Team Roper. “Hotrod” is a massive, gentle stallion with excellent bone and a super disposition. He is an own son of Streakin Six and out of a top stakes and World Champion Race producing dt. of Dash For Cash. Horses and rodeoing with our children is our life. We ride nearly daily and are on the road every weekend. If we aren’t we are home trailing cows or in the spring branding pens with friends and neighbors. It’s a beautiful way of life and we know how a good horse under you contributes to that. Best wishes to you all in your horse endeavors this year and thank you for attending the RQHBA 2015 sale!

We lost our primary stallion, Juno Blast Cash (Juno) , a grandson of Dash For Cash and Easily Smashed a year ago. In addition to leaving a huge hole in our hearts, it also had a huge impact on our breeding program. We were fortunate to be able to lease 2 quality stallions with speed and barrel racing bloodlines on our mares last spring. Cruisin on Firewater was leased from Shari Taggert and brings Firewater Flit and Tiny Charger bloodlines. The second stallion, Free Company, is a beautiful black, AAA, 15.3 hand grandson of Dash For Cash by a daughter of Racin Free and is show horse pretty. AAA and AAA+ horses all thru his pedigree. We got to purchase Free Company this spring and added him to our younger stallion, WR Lets Jet, a son of Jet Black Patriot out of a AAA daughter of Corona Cartel. Free Company already has several horses competing in the barrel and roping pen. We are excited for the future with our new speed bloodlines. We have been raising quality quarter horse arena prospects since the mid 90’s. A couple of our past stallions were sons of On The Money Red (Boomer) and Doc’s Prescription (Babe). We have kept several of their daughters in our broodmare band in addition to daughters of Juno. Our goal is to breed good quality arena and ranch horses with good dispositions, confirmation and athletic ability. We are promoting quality barrel horses with brains and speed. Several have done well at barrel futurities and are competing as 1D barrel horses.

Nash is a 15.3 hand stout cherry sorrel gelding. He is very well broke, stays broke, and has been used for a variety of things. He was started on barrels and poles, used moving cattle and trail riding in the hills and spent a couple months in heading training with Paul Griemsman this spring. Bill isn’t getting the time to ride him he thought, so we have decided to sell him so we can concentrate on some younger geldings. He has been shod but mostly goes barefoot without problems. He could be used as a ranch gelding during the week and rope and /or barrel race on the weekends. He would be a great horse for the whole family. Contact us for information or Paul Griemsman about his roping at 605-484-7117.

Our core program consists of breeding running bred stallions to cow bred mares to produce athletic, good minded horses suitable for the ranch or arena. We recently sold two of our stallions but will still have several of their offspring still available. Signature Perks (by Dash For Perks) is a 16 H race winning black stallion that we crossed with cow bred mares and some race mares. He is siring some very nice foals and lots of black color. We truly appreciate the disposition of this stallion and his foals. Another stallion we used is Effort To The Max (by Special Effort) who is now owned by Moreau River Quarter Horses. This stallion is a compact, powerful, very quick and cowy stallion. We have riding horses sired by both of these stallions available for sale now. Our cornerstone stallion will now be Calculated SI 99 (by Cowboys Rodeo SI 103). This stallion has his racing ROM. He has some of our absolute favorite bloodlines including Ronas Ryon, Dash For Cash, Beduino, Rebel Cause and Lady Bugs Moon and we LOVE what he is producing.

This is a fancy little mare. Bought her as a yearling and she was started by a reining trainer. Showed an extreme amount of natural athleticism and ability - good enough that she could have gone on to be a competitive reiner. Due to cost, I didn’t go that route and have sure enjoyed riding her on the ranch. She has speed, a big stop and a pretty fancy little handle. Loves people and is easy to get along with. First one to meet you in the pasture. I have layed her off for months at a time and got right back on and rode off. With just a little riding, she could go to the show pen, to the arena or make a nice ranch or trail horse. Take a look and you’ll fall in love with her. Eligible for PRQHBA Maturity. 14.2 hands.

Here is an athlete. Correct and good bone. Handles himself well and floats across the ground. Eligible for 5 State Futurity, VGBRA and 3 Can Tango incentive. He has just a little more speed and longer stride than most will. His sire ran on the track in Idaho - SI 99 and ROM Race. I rode and competed on his dam winning the PRQHBA Futurity, numerous halter and western pleasure competitions, overall Grand Champion mare on EMHS Circuit 2006 and numerous Grands in 2007. Currently running barrels on a maternal sister. Very sharp looking colt with some nice breeding behind him. Has 60 days riding on him.

We are truly honored to be a part of the RQHBA sale for our second year! We are very family oriented. Our kids are with us for every aspect of our program from halter breaking, starting colts, and using them in everyday ranch life. We also attend horse shows and youth rodeos where the kids are very active participants, on home raised horses that they have been a part of since the beginning.

Mr. Royal Blake 4

We strive to focus on ‘cow’ bred horses, in the belief that a ranch horse can do anything. We start all of our own colts, and take the time to build a solid foundation. We have learned over the past 9 years from Chris Cox’s program to maximize efficiency with minimizing time, this has made us and our horses better. We are offering the offspring of two of our studs. Mr. Royal Blake has been the foundation of our program. His colts are phenomenal athletes with a lot of size, cow, speed, and sensible mind. Our other stud, Boonylensma, is by Peptoboonsmal, and has over $30,000 in NCHA earnings. His colts are amazingly athletic and good minded. Both studs put a solid foundation in their babies; good bone and feet and lots of muscle! Our mares are mostly old foundation bred cow horses. They live in big open country and do not get any special attention they do it all on their own. They have all either proven themselves as a producer or a saddle horse before joining our program.

Welcome to the 15th Annual RQHBA Select Sale. Our ranch is located at Enning, SD, 60 miles east of Sturgis SD. We raise black angus cattle, sheep and horses. We’ve been breeding Quarter Horses since 1997. We stand 3 stallions: SIR BEA COWBOY: 1996 Blue Roan Stallion, WATCH ME GO COWBOY: 2007 Blue Roan Stallion and PADDYS SHOT OF SUGAR: 2007 Buckskin Stallion Selection of our mares is based on disposition, conformation and pedigree. Most of our mares have been ridden before entering the broodmare band. The 2015 foal crop presented us with 14 fillys and 4 stud colts. The saying “lots of filly’s is a sign of a wet year must be true as the moisture has been plentiful.” The pastures are green and the water is plentiful. Sir Bea Cowboy is getting older and we have kept very few of his offspring. This year we will hold back a few for our mare band out of our older proven producing mares. We are members of the Ranching Heritage AQHA breeders. Our colts qualify for these events through AQHA. Come visit us at the ranch anytime and we hope to see you at the sale. – Glen, Janet and Bailey Long Nick, Brooke, Tyce, Taya and Tripp Uherka 3Sir Bea Cowboy

Hockenbary Quarter Horses Allen & Jamie Hockenbary 605-515-0462 • 605-515-0461 316 Lake St. • Fruitdale, SD 57717 hockejam@gmail.com

We are very proud to be part of our RQHBA “family” and contribute our quality horses to the RQHBA lineup. Our four kids, Corey (17), Collin (15), Layla (13), and Cole (12), Allen and I have been raising horses together for 20 years. With our four children involved, that makes us in our fourth generation of raising quality horses that are in high demand. Our stallion, AJ Oak Rocker, is a 2002 buckskin that goes to Otoe and Sugar Bars and has proven to be a versatile horse with conformation and disposition to burn. AJ Oak Rocker has earned an ROM in Working cowhorse, trail and reining as well as points in halter and Western Pleasure. He has also been used in heading, heeling, tie down calf roping, barrels, and poles. AJ Oak Rocker is a money earner in NRCHA for Jr. Working Cowhorse, SDQHA for Jr. Reining, CON for Jr. Reining and Jr. Trail, heading and heeling. With limited showings he has earned 7 Open All-Arounds, 6 Open Reserve AllArounds, and 1 Amateur All-Around. This willing, versatile horse has passed his performance genetics on to his foals with buyers commenting repeatedly on how easy “Rocky’s” foals are to work with. The mares we have in our breeding program are also well-mannered and have a desire to please. All of our horses are handled by ALL the members of the family, so are kid friendly. The children are primarily in charge of halter breaking foals and have proven to be “horsechildren”. Our kids are on the horses when the horses are young and are seasoned at an early age. We have repeat buyers across the US and Mexico who come back looking for the type of horses we provide. References available at any time! Want a show horse? We got it! Want a kid’s horse? Check. An arena prospect? Right here. A ranch horse? Look no further. Our horses make it possible to pull a one-horse trailer and be successful! Feel free to e-mail (hockejam@gmail.com), call ((605) 892-2470), or stop in near Fruitdale at any time! We think you will come back again and again.

I am proud to say this is my 15th year as a member of the RQHBA and I have been with the AQHA since 1972. Being with this excellent organization challenges me to constantly upgrade my breeding program. I strive to produce foals with super dispositions and conformation, strapped in colorful hides with the ability to compete in any venue. The mares and stallions all run in large pastures with minimal contact with people until the first of August when I gather the foals for the sale. They are naturally open and people friendly. To view other foals please visit my website, www.gumboqh.com.

For over 20 years we have been breeding the kind of horse we like to ride. They can do whatever you want them to – ranch, rodeo, go to the show pen or just down the trails! We continue to be impressed by Harlans Top Gun’s foals. His colts have disposition, athletic ability and, as an added bonus, color. “Top Gun” is by AQHA Superhorse Real Gun and out of the great mare, Harlans Bobbi Jo, 344 AQHA performance points, avg. winner in heading at the INFR 35. We have been line breeding Harlan and know that these horses will cross on any of the modern bloodlines. Our mares predominately carry the blood of Harlan with outcrosses to Zan Parr Jack, Roan Wolf, Cee Booger Red and Oklahoma Fuel. We know that the broodmares are the heart of any program. Our mares all run out 24/7/365, get along well, and raise a good foal. We do have some young horses and foals at the ranch, that are not in the sale. If you are interested, give us a call, friend us on Facebook or check out the web site for what is currently available. Come see us anytime! We are located just on the western edge of the badlands. We always like any reason to go look at the horses. – Tom, Mary and Reva

We are located 9 miles east of Sturgis SD on Highway 34 and 5 miles north on Nine Mile Rd. We’ve been raising Quarter Horses since 1972. For 43 years we have progressively worked on developing strong pedigrees to make multi-talented prospects for use in several competitive events. We hope to continually improve our program by adding new and proven bloodlines to insure our moving forward toward that goal of the perfect all around versatile horse! Unfortunate events happen when you have horses. We lost Wheeling Hickory last year. We only had him for a few months, but came to know what a fabulous horse he was. We only had 4 foals by him this year – 3 were stud colts that will be for sale this year. In November of 2014 my, “We don’t need any more horses”, husband purchased a buckskin weanling stud. He is a grandson of Boonlight Dancer by Peptoboonsmal. On his dams side he goes back to Shining Spark. We are excited to see how he turns out and if we decide to keep him as a stud. We are members of the Ranchers Heritage Breeders Association, which makes any of our colts eligible for their competitions. If you get a chance stop by and see us at the place – we would love to show you the horses. We hope to see you at the sale!

Dakota is a 6 yr. old quarter horse pony mare that stands about 13.2h. She may be small but her heart is bigger than most big horses. She is ranch-broke and has been cowboyed on like a big ranch horse. We have drug calves on her and used her to pull around bigger colts that are a little spooky. She has been started on barrels. Dakota has no bad habits and is solid, but is not for a small child as she has a lot of go. She is ideal for a kid 10-12 years old or anyone that needs a ranch or youth rodeo horse. We have really enjoyed this mare but the grandkids that do ride already have horses.
