About RQHBA

The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from 16 member ranches and one guest consignor. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year, before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.

Organization Goals & Membership

The goal of the RQHBA is to conduct a Select Sale to showcase the Breeders’ top weanlings, yearlings, started and finished performance horses. Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 16 ranches in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana that are RQHBA members, there are also 18 invitational saddle horses being offered in the sale.

Sale Requirements

All horses sold at the RQHBA are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian on sale day. All foals are halter broke and gentle for the sale. The foals are presented in the showcase at 10 a.m. so buyers can compare foals side by side before the sale. Riding horses will also preview before the sale.

Quality of Horses

As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All of the ranches have more horses at home like those offered here so if you see something you like, please contact that ranch. Ranch visits are always welcome.

The Sale Where You Can Buy With Confidence!

Welcome! Thank you for attending the 14th Annual Select Performance & Showcase Sale of the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association. As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your high expectations. This is the sale where you can buy with confidence and find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, show ring, trail or out on the range. Come to the sale grounds at 9 a.m. for the Ranch Horse Futurity, and see sale horses in action and compare foals side by side at 10 a.m. during the Ranch Horse Exhibition and Showcase. Visit with breeders about their programs. Remember all foals will be halter broke, gentle, and eligible for the 2015 RQHBA Futurities. You will find members and guest consignor’s names and phone numbers here in the catalog. Please feel free to give any of the association members or guest consignors a call about their horses. All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like these that are represented at the sale. Your visit is always welcome! We hope to see you on sale day!

Mailloux Quarter Horses Raising Quarter Horses Since 1972.

Gary & Deb Mailloux • 13445 Rodeo Drive • Vale, SD 57788 605-347-3294 • www.maillouxqh.com • gary_deb@hotmail.com After cutting our number of studs to 3 we found a grey son of Wheeling Hickory out of Cash And Freckles by Missin Freckle that we purchased. Hickorys Cash Wheel (aka “Reggie”) is now part of our stallion battery and we have a few 2014 foals by him for sale. Not only did we get Reggie, but we are thrilled to also acquire his sire Wheeling Hickory, a 25 year old, grandson of Docs Hickory and Peppy San Badger. He is a money earner and sire of money earners. By looking at him you would never guess that he is 25 years old. We are breeding a few mares to him this year and are very excited to see his foals next year. So we now have the following studs: Gotta Sweet Leo; True Sparks A Flying; Cowboys Shinin 811, Hickorys Cash Wheel and the great Wheeling Hickory.

5 Wheeling Hickory, Age 25 We are located 9 miles east of Sturgis SD on Highway 34 and 5 miles north on Nine Mile Road. We are on the ranch that was homesteaded by Gary’s grandparents.

Our goal is to continually improve our program by adding genetics that will produce good all-around versatile horses. We want to continue to produce horses with good confirmation, good bone, good dispositions and trainable minds. We are members of the Ranchers Heritage Breeders Association, which makes any of our colts eligible for their competitions.

If you get a chance stop by and see us at the place – we would love to show you the horses. We hope to see you at the sale!

Hockenbary Quarter Horses Allen & Jamie Hockenbary • 316 Lake St. • Fruitdale, SD 57717 605-515-0462 • 605-515-0461 • hockejam@gmail.com We are very proud to be part of our RQHBA “family” and to have been here from the beginning! Our four kids, Corey (15), Collin (13), Layla (11), and Cole (10), Allen and I have been raising horses together for over 15 years. With our four children involved, that makes us in our fourth generation of raising quality horses that are in high demand. Many of our bloodlines trace back to Lucky Joe Lynx and Kelly Cody as well as Lightning Bar, Sugar Bars, Impressive, Whammy Cat, and Otoe. We have found that these lines work best for us because of the deep girth, wide chest, large hip, bone, and eye with speed and cow ability. The horse that can be successful in multiple events is what we strive for. They need to look good and allow for a person to take a one horse trailer to a rodeo and be competitive. Our stallion, AJ Oak Rocker, is a 2002 buckskin stallion that goes to Otoe and Sugar Bars and has proven to be a versatile horse with conformation and disposition to burn. AJ Oak Rocker has earned an ROM in Working Cow Horse, Trail and Reining as well as points in Halter and Western Pleasure. He has also been used in Heading, Heeling, Tie-Down Calf Roping, Barrels, and Poles. AJ Oak Rocker is a money earner in NRCHA for Jr. Working Cowhorse, SDQHA for Jr. Reining, CON for Jr. Reining and Jr. Trail, Heading and Heeling. With limited showings he has earned 7 Open All-Arounds, 6 Open Reserve All-Arounds, and 1 Amateur All-Around. This willing, versatile horse has passed his performance genetics on to his foals with buyers commenting repeatedly on how easy “Rocky’s” foals are to work with. The mares we have in our breeding program are also well-mannered and have a desire to please. All of our horses are handled by ALL the members of the family, so are kid friendly. The children were primarily in charge of halter breaking foals this year and have proven to be “horse children”. Our kids are on the horses when the horses are young and are seasoned at an early age. We have repeat buyers across the US and Mexico who come back looking for the type of horses we provide. References available at any time! Want a show horse? We got it! Want a kid’s horse? Check. An arena prospect? Right here. A ranch horse? Look no further. Our horses make it possible to pull a one-horse trailer and be successful! Feel free to e-mail (hockejam@gmail.com), call (605) 892-2470, or stop in near Fruitdale at any time!

Bill & Stephanie Bennis • 12635 293rd Ave. • Glenham, SD 57631 701-721-0771 • www.bar-bsranch.com • bsranch@valleytel.net We lost our primary stallion, Juno Blast Cash (Juno) , a grandson of Dash For Cash and Easily Smashed last winter. In addition to leaving a huge hole in our hearts, it also had a huge impact on our breeding program. We were fortunate to be able to lease 2 quality stallions with speed and barrel racing bloodlines on our mares this spring. Cruisin on Firewater was leased from Shari Taggert and brings Firewater Flit and Tiny Charger bloodlines. The second stallion, Free Company, is a beautiful black, AAA, 15.3 hand grandson of Dash For Cash by a daughter of Racin Free and is show horse pretty. AAA and AAA+ horses all thru his pedigree. We are hoping for the continued opportunity to breed to this great horse again next year. We have been raising quality quarter horse arena

prospects since the mid 90’s. A couple of our past stallions were sons of On The Money Red (Boomer) and Doc’s Prescription (Babe). We have kept several of their daughters in our broodmare band in addition to daughters of Juno. Although we don’t know who are new stallion will be, he will have a nice set of mares when he gets here. Our goal is to breed good quality arena and ranch horses with good dispositions, confirmation and athletic ability. We are promoting quality barrel horses with brains and speed. Several have done well at barrel futurities and are competing as 1D barrel horses. Juno was also used for calf roping and heeling. He was very athletic and worked off his hip naturally. He proved to be very cowy for a running horse.

This mare has thrown one of the nicest colts each year, so I dug a little deeper into her pedigree. Red Babe Leo was by Leo’s Question the sire of Superior halter and performance offspring in addition to offspring with ROM in performance and race and also money earners in race and NCHA. Tiny Banjo is by Tiny Charger AAAT. Nice red dun colt with cute head and shapely frame. Nice speed / cow cross with great disposition, confirmation and great looks. Should have the ability to go on to most any performance event and look good doing it. Would be eligible for the Double J Classic Barrel Futurity.

Bar JT Quarter Horses is located near Broadus, MT. Our core program consists of crossing running bred stallions on cow bred mares to produce athletic, good minded horses suitable for the ranch or arena. We recently sold two of our stallions but will still have several of their offspring still available. Signature Perks (by Dash For Perks) is a 16 H race winning black stallion that we crossed with cow bred mares and some race mares. He is siring some very nice foals and lots of black color. We truly appreciate the disposition of this stallion and his foals. Another stallion we used is Effort To The Max (by Special Effort). This stallion is a compact, powerful, very quick and cowy stallion. We have riding horses sired by Max available for sale now. Our cornerstone stallion will now be Calculated SI 99 (by Cowboys Rodeo SI 103). This stallion has his racing ROM. He has some of our absolute favorite bloodlines including Ronas Ryon, Dash For Cash, Beduino, Rebel Cause and Lady Bugs Moon and we LOVE what he is producing.

On the other side of the aisle in the cowhorse section, we have Surefine Whiskey ( by Paddys Irish Whiskey out of a Doc O Dynamite mare). His mother came off the Scott Ranch, winners of the 2007 AQHA Remuda of the Year award. “Whiskey” offspring have been top notch for us. You won’t find any more easy to train and ride horses! They are muscular, easy keeping horses with good bone and kind dispositions (with just a bit of playfulness thrown in). They have conformation good enough to win in a halter class yet are cowy, athletic and love to work. Finally, one of our nicest ranch horse, all around

sires is Bro Dun Did It (by Bro Pete), a striking buckskin stallion. We raised this stallion and have shown him locally with great success. He was in reining training, has been heeled off of and does any kind of ranch work you ask him to do. The diversity of our breeding program gives us the ability to produce horses you can race, run barrels, rope off of, cowhorse on or just ride for ranch work or enjoyment. Stop by anytime to look at the horses. We always have a variety of ages for sale – weanling to riding horses.

Merrill Ranch was struck hard by the Atlas storm this past winter. Losing over 30 head of quality horses which were years in the making thru strategic breeding. Lost were nearly all of the weanlings, yearlings and two year olds – including replacement fillies – along with a solid group of broodmares and some outstanding saddle horses. These horses were superbly bred athletes, colored and had endless future potential. Our hats go off and hearts go out, being forever thankful to have had them at our ranch and as a part of our program, if for even a brief period of time. With that stated our two PROVEN stallions, Pat Cowan (x Sun Frost) and Streakin Hotrod (x Streakin Six), did have a very limited foal crop hit the ground this year. Colored, bred right and gorgeous they are a breath of fresh air and stitch of healing to us. They are out of dt’s of Frenchmans Guy, No Brakes Now (SI 104), Title Contender (SI 94), PC Frenchmans Hayday- aka Dinero, Pat Cowan, Sun Frost and Genuine As Diamonds (Superior HD/HL , 2x World Show). Due to our loss this will be our first offering of weanlings at the RQHBA sale vs saddle horses. We hope you enjoy what we’ve brought you on this special year.

Hancock Maxon Quarter Horses Tom Hancock & Mary Maxon • 24900 Spring Draw Road • Scenic, SD 57780 605-993-3256 • www.hmqh.com • hmqh@gwtc.net

For over 20 years we have been breeding the kind of horse we like to ride. They can do whatever you want them to – ranch, rodeo, go to the show pen or just down the trails! We are very excited about our first crop of foals by Harlans Top Gun. Top Gun is by AQHA Superhorse Real Gun and out of the great mare, Harlans Bobbi Jo, 344 AQHA performance points, avg. winner in heading at the INFR 35. His colts have disposition, athletic ability and, as an added bonus, color. Since days aren’t getting any longer and the commute isn’t getting any shorter we have made the difficult decision to start cutting back on numbers. Check out our web site for 2 in 1 packages on mares, with special consideration for multiple mare purchases. Our mares predominately carry the blood of Harlan with outcrosses to Roan Wolf, Cee Booger Red and Oklahoma Fuel. These mares all run out 24/7/365, get along well, and raise a nice colt. We will also be offering Big Honey Harlan and Harlan Kent at private treaty. Both have been doing a great job for us. Come see us anytime! – Tom, Mary and Reva

Shield 5 Quarter Horses

Dave & Susan Riesland • 917 Grazing Association Road • Oshoto, WY 82721 307-467-5644 • www.shield5horses.com • Email? We are very excited and honored to be invited to be a part of the 2014 RQHBA family and sale. We have been raising horses for nine years. We strive to focus on ‘cow’ bred horses, in the belief that a ranch horse can do anything. We start all of our own colts, and take the time to build a solid foundation. We do not sacrifice color for quality, so most of our horses are sorrel. We were very fortunate to find our old stallion, Mr. Royal Blake to start our program. He is a grandson and great-grandson of Cutter Bill, as well as having Royal King and Hollywood Gold on his papers. His colts have been outstanding; they mature quickly with an abundance of bone and muscle, have very trainable minds, and are great athletes. His colts have made great ranch horses for our customers over the years. They have all had speed and ability to go and compete in the arena also with a couple of them proving it. Two years ago we purchased another stud, Boonylensma, an own son of Peptoboonsmal, and out of a daughter of Doc O’Lena. He has over $30,000 in NCHA earnings. We were lucky enough to purchase and ride some of his babies before getting him, and now have his first crop of colts from our mares on the ground. Our mares winter out in the sagebrush and are strong and hardy. Traits they pass onto their babies. For more info, view our website: www.shield5horses.com, or call us at: (307) 467-5644.

He has drug calves to the fire, roped and doctored cattle in the pasture, and every other phase of ranch work. He has seen a lot of miles and will see many more before this fall. He is currently being shown on the Eastern Montana Horse Show Circuit and will be very seasoned by sale time. He is being patterned on the barrels and poles and showing a lot of promise. He will also be tracking some steers out of the box before the sale.

Snazzy is a beautiful and very well bred mare. She is a gray with a black dorsal stripe. Her conformation is very correct and she has NO scars or blemishes. Snazzy was bred and born on my parents place and was given to me as a weanling. Due to a divorce that I am going thru I need to sell her. I started Snazzy under saddle this spring and she is wonderful to work with. She is very smart and willing. She loves having baths and she’s great to clip, load and haul in the trailer. She has been vaccinated with a 3-Way and current on her worming. Paul Griesman will be taking her in June and July and training her for 60 day’s before she sells. We purchased this mare at the 2009 RQHBA sale from Mailloux QH. In 2010 she was the RQHBA Futurity Champion winning $833. Ike is one of the hardest working horses I have ever rode. Ike has doctored calves and yearlings in the pasture and drug a lot of calves this branding season. Ike stands at 14.3h but works harder than most bigger horses. Ike has a very smooth walk, trot and lope which makes any job you are doing easy and enjoyable. He is also very aware of his surroundings and reacts well even on his own. Ike has huge potential as a heel horse and will be ready to go to any jackpot or rode by sale time. He is gentle and very easy to catch and trim his feet. He has a nice disposition and gets along well with other horses. Ike’s potential limitless. Please call (605) 645-9855 for any questions.
