About RQHBA
The Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association was first organized in the spring of 2000 when a group of South Dakota quarter horse breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals, and has evolved into a highly recognized Performance and Prospect Sale & Futurity, featuring the top offerings from 16 member ranches. Ranches must apply for membership and participate as a Guest Consignor for at least one year, before being selected for membership by the RQHBA to assure that their program meets our high standards.
Organization Goals & Membership
The goal of the RQHBA is to conduct a Select Sale to showcase the Breeders’ top weanlings, yearlings, started and finished performance horses. Each ranch may not sell more than 50% of the current year’s foal production. The purpose of this rule is to maintain a high quality sale without having a total production sale for any one member. Besides the current 16 ranches in western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana that are members of the RQHBA, there are also 21 invitational saddle horses being offered in the 2013 sale.
Sale Requirements
All horses sold at the RQHBA are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian on sale day. All foals are halter broke and gentle for the sale. The foals are presented in the showcase at 10 a.m. so buyers can compare foals side by side before the sale. Riding horses will also preview before the sale.

As a group we strive to breed horses that are sound and structurally correct. We are confident the quality of our horses will meet your highest expectations. This is a sale where you can find a truly versatile horse suited for the arena, the show ring, trail riding or ranch work. All of the ranches have more horses at home like those offered here so if you see something you like, please contact that ranch. Ranch visits are always welcome.

Nestled in the beautiful black hills of Wyoming, located just six miles east of Devils Tower National Monument, is where we’re blessed to call home. We use our horses for everything that can be done horse back on the ranch. We concentrate on producing good sound of mind and body horses for the whole family to use yet are athletic enough to go out and compete in the arena. Our stallion, Frenchmans Image, is an own son of Frenchmans Guy who has consistently been ranked in the top of the nation for barrel futurity money earners. Image’s mom is Oh Image Three (SI 96). The mare line is outstanding with the bottom side of the pedigree either having fast speed indexes, produced faster speed indexes or both. Images colts are showing his same willingness to please and athletic ability, winning in the barrels and poles. Image not only is producing colts that are winning but his daughters are starting to produce. We are located 5 ½ miles south of White River, S.D. on Hwy 83. We have been raising ranch and arena horses with eye appeal and cow sense for over thirty years. Our stallions are “Benito Bar Rebel”, a 1991 palomino by “Benito Bar jack”, an AQHA champion, by “Doc’s Benito Bar” by “Doc Bar”. His dam is “Rapid’s Kitten” by “Rapid D Or” by “Rapid Bar”. Dam and sire are from the Raymond and Georga Sutton Ranch, Gettysburg, SD. Merrill Ranch continues its goal of offering the most proven, up close bloodlines we possibly can thru our proven performance stallions as well as our “own daughters” broodmare band however; our program has made some changes over the past year. We were blessed to put up an indoor arena a few years ago and have since expanded our riding program by hiring Becky Amio as our onsite full-time trainer. His mother came off the Scott Ranch, winners of the 2007 AQHA Remuda of the Year award. “Whiskey” offspring have been top notch for us. You won’t find any more easy to train and ride horses! They are muscular, easy keeping horses with good bone and kind dispositions (with just a bit of playfulness thrown in). They have conformation good enough to win in a halter class yet are cowy, athletic and love to work. Finally, one of our nicest ranch horse, all around sires is Bro Dun Did It (by Bro Pete), a striking buckskin stallion. We raised this stallion and have shown him locally with great success. He was in reining training, has been heeled off of and does any kind of ranch work you ask him to do. In 2010 he was the high point senior stallion at halter and as a two year old placed second in the 2/3 year old futurity at the PRQHBA Competition which combines reining, pleasure and conformation. You can do anything on this horse – drag calves to the fire, take him to a horse show, heel on him, ride in the mountains, whatever – he will do it. I rode and showed the dam of this filly. My grandparents homesteaded this ranch in 1910. Dad, Francis Chaffee, started raising horses to sell to the US remount service in the late 1930’s. I was born into the horse business with an eye for a good horse. I bought my first registered Quarter horse mare in 1972, and her bloodlines are still in my mares backgrounds. Wes and I bought our first registered stallion in 1977, Flying Rocket Cat. I kept many of his fillies so the majority of my mares go back to him. In 1997 we bought PC Ikewood Oaks to cross on Cat’s mares, which has been an excellent cross. Five years ago I bought Feature Hank at Bob Jordan’s estate sale, another solid upgrade. These stallions and/or offspring have been shown in the AQHA in all roping classes, halter, reining, trail, pleasure etc, used on the ranch sorting pairs, and for all other phases of cattle ranch work.

Our stallion, AJ Oak Rocker, is a 2002 buckskin stallion that goes to Otoe and Sugar Bars and has proven to be a versatile horse with conformation and disposition to burn. AJ Oak Rocker has earned an ROM in Working Cow Horse, Trail and Reining as well as points in Halter and Western Pleasure. He has also been used in Heading, Heeling, Tie-Down Calf Roping, Barrels, and Poles. AJ Oak Rocker is a money earner in NRCHA for Jr. Working Cowhorse, SDQHA for Jr. Reining, CON for Jr. Reining and Jr. Trail, Heading and Heeling. With limited showings he has earned 7 Open All-Arounds, 6 Open Reserve All-Arounds, and 1 Amateur All-Around. This willing, versatile horse has passed his performance genetics on to his foals with buyers commenting repeatedly on how easy “Rocky’s” foals are to work with. The mares we have in our breeding program are also well-mannered and have a desire to please. All of our horses are handled by ALL the members of the family, so are kid friendly. Welcome to our 13th annual RQHBA Select Showcase Sale. Selection of the colts for this years sale brings to the buyer Cow/Performance pedigrees with a little speed mixed in, solid conformation,disposition, athleticism, and as a bonus color. Ranch, rodeo or pleasure, we strive to produce a versatile horse that will fit into anyone’s program. Our ranch is located 60 miles east of Sturgis. We stand a 1996 blue roan stallion “Sir Bea Cowboy” sired by Bee Lowa Cowboy, an own son of AQHA champion Snippys Cowboy and out of an own daughter of Sir Beat. Sir Bea Cowboy stamps his colts with a pretty head, kind disposition, lot of bone and a big hip. His colts are quick to learn and easy to handle. We have introduced two new young stallions. “Watch Me Go Cowboy” a blue roan son of Sir Bea Cowboy out of a granddaughter of Watch Joe Jack. His colts have solid built conformation with plenty of athleticism; his oldest colts are four year olds this year. Our second young stallion “Paddys Shot of Sugar” is a buckskin grandson of Paddys Irish Whishey out of a grandaughter of Sugar Bars. We are excited to see how these colts perform as both sire and dam are proven performance horses in the arena for roping and barrel racing. We like this young stallion’s disposition and natural athletic ability; his oldest colts are also four year olds. Watch for 2014 foals by Boy O Paddy Boy, an own son of Paddys Irish Whiskey by a Doc Athena daughter, we recently purchased from the Roveres. Our mares feature the lines of Sugar Bars, Leo, Orphan Drift, Snippys Cowboy, Freckles Playboy, Docs Hickory, French Sabre, Docs Lynx, Watch Joe Jack, Top Moon, On The Money Red, and Frenchmans Guy. Our mares contribute a lot to the shaping of a colt. We have ridden most of the mares we own on the ranch and some in the arena. We look for disposition, mind and athletic ability in our young mares. GRADE Duke is an AQHA gelding selling grade. He is a 2005 model, big and strong. If a person is looking for a tough horse to ride big circles on he can and has done it. This red dun horse is a great looking horse and I have done ranch work on him for a couple of summers. He has gatherd both cows and sheep, drug calves, and pasture doctored a few yearlings. He does get a little nervous in crowds and is not a finished rope horse but has some experience. This horse is very athletic and should work with many different disciplines. 2014 RQHBA Don Brunner Memorial Yearling Futurity Futurity Information: • $833.00 purse per division – studs, geldings, fillies. • Futurity will be held during Central States Fair in August 2014. • Futurity will be for yearlings only (studs, geldings, fillies). • To be eligible, the foal must have SOLD through the 2013 RQHBA Sale; eligibility will follow the horse. • The yearling must show to three judges. • Winnings will be awarded to the registered owner at time of futurity. • Original papers are to be presented for show registration (to verify ownership). • AQHA membership required. • Showing expenses are the owner’s responsibility (entry fees, stall, etc.). • Payback will be based on number of RQHBA entries and number of RQHBA horses defeated. • RQHBA members/consignors are not eligible to compete for futurity funds. 9 a.m. Aug. 25 at Besler’s Cadillac Ranch Any horses purchased through the RQHBA sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2013 can compete for cash! Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against each other for $600 in 2013. Entry fees are $75 if paid by Aug. 1; late entrants will be accepted for an additional fee. Following is the point structure that will be used and guidelines for determining the winner: 1. Gate (horseback) 25 pts. 2. Bridge (walk over) 15 pts. 3. Logs (trot through) 15 pts. 4. Log (drag figure 8) 20 pts. 5. Reining pattern – 50 pts. Posted morning of Futurity 6. Dismount on right side & pick up right rear leg 25 pts. 7.
