REGISTRATION: All horses sell American Quarter Horse Assn. registered unless announced. A $15 transfer fee will be assessed the buyer of each horse and sent with registration transfer to the AQHA once settlement has cleared.

AIRPORTS: Commercial air service is available into Rapid City, SD – 120 mi. south of the ranch. Private planes may land at Buffalo, SD (3900 ft. paved runway). TERMS & CONDITIONS: Terms of the sale are cash or personal check (U.S. Funds). Every sale animal will be sold to the highest bidder with the auctioneer settling bid disputes. Announced changes on sale day take precedence over printed material. All horses are the buyer’s property as soon as sold. No delivery is available until final settlement is made. Buyers must make arrangements for care of their purchases at their own risk until delivery is taken. All horses must be picked up within one week of sale date unless prior arrangements have been made. Insurance will be required on any horses left past Tuesday after the sale.

TRUCKING: Professional transport services willavailable. Buyers are responsible for their own trucking. We will be glad to assist in arrangements. Price Family Ranch Grandpa Stanley and Grandma Clarice Price(Cooper) purchased a ranch from Jay Cooper in 1954 and moved to Harding County with seven kids and later had Craig. Their ranch is located on the Gilbert-Hett Road below the ridge called the Jumpoff. Grandpa continued growing the ranch, buying the Buttes near the Slim Buttes, the Richie Place a couple miles west of Buffalo, and the Penn Place on top of the Jumpoff. They ran cows and sheep, and Grandpa always had an eye for horses and had a lot of kids that needed a mount. Dad and Mom got hitched after their stint at Harvard on the Hill, also known as Dawson Community College, where Dad had lots of success riding Barebacks. They moved back to Harding County and purchased their current place from Roy Cooper in 1978 about 7 miles horse back from the grandparents. They raised four kids – Joey, Jacki, Josi, and Jet. Each kid has rode since they could walk and rodeoed through college. Dad rode many horses but decided to go learn some more and went to a few clinics and is always willing to learn new approaches to start horses. Dad and Mom had quite a horse herd and in 1995 decided to have a horse sale, since then they have had one every three years. Joey is married to JW Moore, and they have one boy McCoy (18 months). Joey is a high school math teacher in Buffalo, WY. They have some cows and also have a good string of horses at their place by Story, WY. Jacki is married to Jordan Christman and they have Cahan (4), Citti (3), and Conway (9 months). They farm and ranch near Hettinger, ND. Josi lives by Bowman, ND, and has a small herd of cattle. She is the account manager for Honeywell for North Dakota and Eastern Montana. Jet graduated from Dawson Community College in 2008. He came back home and has worked and rode nonstop since. He continued to rodeo out of college and made the circuit finals numerous times, winning the average in Badlands Circuit in bareback riding in 2012. He decided to hang it up a couple years back to concentrate all his energy ranching with Mom and Dad. He is a huge assets to the operation! In the last few years they have added to the ranch by purchasing the Old Mackey Place, east of the main ranch and the Bud Cooper Ranch. They sold the sheep in 2001 and increased the cow herd. The ranch is comprised of rolling hills to forest and everything in between. Horses are used for everyday work which makes for good broke ranch horses. Harding County is the fourth largest county in South Dakota by area, but it has the smallest population per capital. It used to be full of sheep, but between the blizzards, drought, prices, and predators, it is nearly now full of cattle. Harding County is known for good cattle and better neighbors. It is also known for the Crow Buttes, Tipperary, Three Toes, great steer wrestlers, Custers Trail to Bismarck from Ft. Meade (which went through the ranch) and much more. Here is John and Etta Cooper’s covered wagons. They homesteaded in Harding County, where current-day Price Ranch is located.

In 2015 The Rafter Diamond purchased the Mackey Place which was once a remount horse outfit located in the Short Pines. The Mackey Brothers also produced and provided bucking stock for many area rodeos. They started the Buffalo Labor Day rodeo, as well as moved the High School Regional rodeo to Buffalo. A portion of the rock corral on the Mackey Ranch (top left) still stands and is a must see!

This illusive lobo taunted and haunted Harding County ranches in the early 1900’s. Three Toes track’s were easily identified as he had lost one toe in a rancher’s trap in his early days. He killed for sport and vengeance. It is estimated that his prey was valued between $50,000 and $100,000 and twice federal agents were called to help track him. One of Three Toes favorite haunts was The Jump Off, located on the Price Ranch.

If you’ve heard of Harding County then you’ve heard of Tipperary (above). He was deemed “One of the greatest outlaw bucking horses in the world.” It is estimated that nearly 90 cowboys, the best from America to Canada, attempted to cover Tipperary. In 1961, the Buffalo rodeo arena was officially named the Tipperary Arena. Tipperary is pictured with his owner Charles Wilson (right).
