The Price You Pay Fall is falling and you are on vacation. Well done.

You’ve chosen, in my opinion, the nicest of the Black Hills’ seasons for touring, eating, drinking and all around vacationing. The hordes of frenzied bikers, cowboys and spread-thin, stressed-out, extended families have all gone back to reality, leaving you this bastion of tranquility and beauty almost all to yourself. The harvest is coming in and the local fares are some of the best in Midwest. Spearfish Valley is renowned for its sweet corn on the cob and while there is not to my knowledge any place that serves it on their menu, you can pick it up by the ear at one of many farmer’s markets out near Crow Peak Brewery on Valley Rd. Speaking of the brewery, while the crowds and demand start to dwindle, Crow Peak is pumping out their tasty beer in full force (as it is known that the locals tend to drink more beer in the anticipation of winter). The young brewer, Adam Mundwarf, has created an IPA brewed with fresh kiwis. Sound strange? It is. Strange or not, I thoroughly enjoyed the growler I drank last week and at 8.9 percent abv, I enjoyed myself as well. While the lowly kiwi may not necessarily have the pizzaz to stand up to the overly hopped brew, I feel like it adds a green bitterness that lends itself well.

In this beautiful peaceful place, there may be a certain price that you pay for choosing the shoulder season. For instance, shop hours may be shortened. Plan accordingly for this and look ahead at the day’s itinerary. Many places have cut back their summer help and may be slightly understaffed for the demand at times. If you are visiting Deadwood, there are a couple ground rules that will enhance your experience. Deadwood has been bombarded for the last three months with unruly and even sometimes whiny droves of tourists, essentially non-stop. Think of this time of year as the locals’ vacation, too. While everyone you encounter will no doubt be more than happy to see and serve you, there may be some snarkiness lying just under the surface. Tread lightly when entering establishments. Instead of demanding a menu or a drink right off the bat, say “hello” or “howdy”. Engage these people like you would a business associate or a first dinner date. Keep stupid questions to a minimum and unless it is absolutely necessary, pending an immediate accident, do not ask where the bathroom is located. You’re an adult and have probably come this far in life with somewhere near a 100 percent rate of finding the bathroom on your own. Keep it up! In summation, act like you’re visiting real people in the place that they live. Like I say, the Black Hills locals will be some of the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet. However, like anybody who has endured houseguests that have stayed just a touch too long, there is a point where you might be asked to call a cab. And no, you may not borrow the phone. The taxi cabs and trolleys stop at the stoplight, get in one. Now, like I say, I’m on vacation and will be cutting this column a bit shorter than you may like. But hey… I’m on vacation.

Black Hills Businessman Spotlight: Justin Henrichsen Justin Henrichsen was born and grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Since the 7th grade, he has been friends with Tim Smith, who is now his business partner.

Along with Tim’s parents, Steve and Kathy Smith, the two friends own one of the hottest businesses in Rapid City: The Independent Ale House. The pub, open since 2011, has a setting that is cool and absolutely unique to the Hills. Once you’ve met Justin, there is no doubt as to why. The bar mimics the man.

Both the bar and the man are laid back.

After high school, Justin and Tim spent some time living in Colorado skiing and living the good life.

Upon returning to the Black Hills, they saw a need for the style of bar to which they had become accustomed. And that is how the Independent Ale House was born. It is a comfortable place; almost like home. The atmosphere allows for conversation and the selections of beer and wine are top notch. Justin makes certain that the continuously

changing beer selections are the best that there is to offer and with 40 tap lines for different beers, the Independent Ale House proudly offers one of the best selections available anywhere in the Hills. A food menu is also available and features some of the best pizza in the area.

Strong believers in the importance of a healthy economy in downtown Rapid City, the friends have recently opened a second downtown business; The Pita Pit. While the Black Hills offers a variety of hiking opportunities, after starting a family, I have found that I have to be more organized and less spontaneous whenever I feel the urge to go hiking in the hills. Now, the more hikes we go on, the better the experience.

We have experienced many moments when we have said to ourselves, “I wish I would have thought to pack that.” For example, forgetting to bring the diaper wipes or a snack for the toddler – you only let that happen once.

Not only do you have to plan what to bring, but you also have to decide which hike to do. You want to keep it new and interesting and always look for that next great adventure, while making sure that it is suitable for all ages. One of my all-time favorite hikes on which to take my whole family is located just a few miles south of Rapid City, right of off Highway 16 – Stratobowl.

Stratobowl is a not just a hike in the Black Hills; it is also a historical site that is used to launch Hot Air Balloons. In 1934 and 1935, the Army Air Corps and National Geographic Society launched manned balloon flights into space from here. They reached the record of 72,395 feet into the stratosphere, which is how this valley became known as Stratobowl.

Each year in September, experienced balloonists from all around the world gather to launch from the Stratobowl in celebration of the anniversary of those early flights. Over the course of three days, the balloonists fly above the Black Hills. Not only is the Stratobowl historical, but it is a great hiking choice for those with small children or those who want to easily escape into the Black Hills.

I love this hike for many reasons – its easy

access off Highway 16, the beautiful, lush, green forest, the duration and its easy terrain. The trail is the width of a road and could easily be driven on if need be which makes it easy to use a stroller. I like to use a wrap with the littlest one and wear him on our hikes and reserve the backpack for the toddler when he has worn himself out.

Hiking to the rim of the canyon is only about

a half mile and can be done in less than 30 minutes.

It takes my clan a little bit longer since we are admiring each flower and looking behind the trees for chipmunks and squirrels. The trail really feels like a nice walk in the forest. It is not strenuous, and the payoff in the end is incredible.

When you reach the rim of the canyon, you realize how amazing the Black Hills really are. There is a viewing area with a fence to keep your family safe while looking toward the bottom. The floor of the circular canyon has a peace symbol mowed into the grass. No matter what time of year it is, if you can hike to it, you can always count on the peace symbol being there. After viewing the valley, you will find the history of the Stratobowl carved into magnificent stones that are enclosed in a chain-link fenced-in area. This is a great place to get out the snacks and prepare for the walk back to the car.

The whole trail takes less than an hour to complete and is roughly a mile long. In my opinion the Stratobowl hike is perfect for families of all ages and sizes and is also great for beginners. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great place for a family’s first hike in the Black Hills because of its level of difficulty, duration and the aesthetic payoff when you reach the top.

Crook County Museum and 1875 Gallery

Come see the Black Hills of Northeastern Wyoming. History doesn’t have a state line; the historical aspects of the west can be seen in the Crook County Museum & Art Gallery in picturesque Sundance, Wyoming right off of Interstate 90. The History of Crook County is depicted in the many dioramas and exhibits. There are over 7000 artifacts, which are housed in the lower level of the Crook County Court House. The original court room from 1884 is on display in one of the permanent exhibits along with the Sundance Kid exhibit.

The gun exhibit is phenomenal. Experience a walk thru time in the replica barn and stable with its buggy and work tools. Glance in the bunk house that has all the amenities a cowboy bachelor could want. Listen for the sounds of stampeding buffalo hooves as you look at the Vore Buffalo Jump diorama with all its grand archeology discoveries. Go on an adventure of a lifetime with Custer and his men as they trek through the Black Hills in the Expedition of 1874. Follow the trails and the tribulations of his men as they fight for survival against nature, the illicit miners, and the natives. Explore Moses Annenberg’s great hideaway locally know as Ranch A. When he was looking for a quiet place to relax and a place to throw some great parties for his fellow city dudes he would come to the isolation of the Black Hills and go to his local canyon ranch to kick up his heels. The Ranch had solemn beginnings as a homestead claim of Jack Boyden who settled along Sand Creek in 1877.

Boyden built cabins on his property for vacationing tourists, and an occasional hunting and fishing trip from his second cousin Theodore Roosevelt who visited the Black Hills between 1886-1901. In 1919 he sold the 860 acres to George LaPlant, While Annenberg was visiting a local town and eating in a cafĂŠ he asked the proprietor where the trout came from because it was the best he ever had, the proprietor said it came from sand creek, Annenberg went to LaPlant and offered him more money than could be refused, it was sold to Moses Annenberg in 1931. The lodge constructed in 1932, by Annenberg, is a massive structure that sits below the north slope of the Sand Creek Canyon wall. The log buildings of Ranch A are some of the finest architect designed buildings in Wyoming. Ray Ewing of Deadwood, South Dakota was hired by Moses Annenberg to execute the designs. The log work was

done by Bill Juso and his three brothers that were known in the Black Hills for their exquisite work in building Swedish cope structures that they learned from their father, a Finnish immigrant. 100 of their buildings are known to exist in the hills and 3 are situated in Ranch A. Moses built the lodge for his family but it was too isolated for the likes of the metropolitans so they never visited . Local folklore claims that Moses held some great parties in his lodge inviting people like Al Capone and the likes for illegal gambling, horse racing and poker along with an array of women companionship. The locals would see the large black sedans come down the road and they knew it was Moses and his cronies coming in. Meet The Animals:

Hercules

Out of the multitude of animals that make their home at Spirit of the Hills Wildlife sanctuary, one particular animal stands out among the rest.

Perhaps at dusk you have heard his roar echo near Tinton Road outside of Spearfish.

The king of the forest’s name is Hercules, and he is one of the most beloved creatures at the Sanctuary.

Hercules is mostly Barbary lion, which is an extinct subspecies that was native to Northern Africa. Their interactions with humans inspired legends both of terror and awe in cultures throughout the Mediterranean.

The Barbary makes many appearances in the ancient art and sacred texts produced by Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Israelis, Greeks, and Romans. However, their close proximity to civilization was also their undoing. His-

tory tells us tales of Barbaries fighting to the death in lion pits, being slaughtered for gory entertainment in a Roman Coliseum, or getting poached indiscriminately to protect livestock. It is said that the last of the wild population was finished off by European trophy hunters in the early 1900’s. Because the scant remainder of Barbary lion blood currently exists in African lion crossbreeds like Hercules, there is not a stable enough population for the Barbary to be brought back from extinction.

Hercules, as a cub, was purchased on the black market in Canada, where he was kept as a family pet and shared a bunk bed with two little girls. Since lions become fiercely protective of whomever they bond with, Hercules became aggressive toward the girls’ parents.

It was then that Hercules was turned over to the Sanctuary. We encourage you to stop by and see him and the other animals at the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. See info on events and educational tour times at spiritofthehillssanctuary.org.

As Fall sets in, hiking in the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF) is in its prime with deep reds and rich yellows peeking through the Pines. This is truly the best time to experience Spearfish Canyon and all that the BHNF has to offer. The BHNF is home to an awe inspiring trail system with hikes ranging from just over half a mile to over one-hundred and ten miles long. Each trail has its own unique features and difficulties for young hikers and those that are young at heart. There are enough hikes in the BHNF to keep even the locals busy!

Whether you’re a just traveling through the area or call the Black Hills home, you will always find new trails to explore.

If you’re more of an overnighter,

you’ll find a plethora of campgrounds, offering over 680 sites, nestled in the forest; many with fire rings and bathroom facilities. For the rough and rugged, dispersed camping in the Black Hills is free for up to fourteen days within a sixty-day period.

The Canyon. Spoken in italics by the locals and capitalized as a proper noun…which, indeed it is…Spearfish Canyon is grandeur at its grandest, majesty magnified, nature narcissistic.

Designated by the Highway Department as a Scenic Byway, it is so much more; a spiritual place, a sacred place. The tranquil beauty tangible balm for the soul. Venue for a myriad of outdoors adventures, it is a playground, a retreat, an escape, a cathedral. Those of us who live here must experience periodically the solitude, the beauty and the comfort of distance on that road. Whether to feed an addiction or fuel a dream…a run in the Canyon is bankable. You can pull it up on a dreary day in the office and float again between the pine-studded sandstone walls. Biking, hiking, cycling, running…rekindle the soul, relax the mind. That’s the kind of thinking done in the Canyon, the ruminating, dreaming, and making big plans for the future.

Time on your feet, miles in your head, peace in your heart.

The Canyon is broken. An October, 2014 storm ravaged the area and left in its wake the twisted, torn and mangled trees… sad, sad, sad. But acts of God are what they are; we salvage what we can, celebrate what we have left, and know that a certain sure beauty remains. The creek is indomitable, and a journey between the majestic towering walls will remain as splendid, as sacred and as savory as it was before this brutally altered landscape. The creek that runs from beginning to end is an entity all its own, the creator of this powerful paragon.

I’ve gained new respect for Spearfish Creek, and find an intriguing corollary. I have always considered the Creek my delightful companion as I cruise along its banks on my quest to fitness, a friend of mine recently attributed to it a personality

trait I hadn’t considered. Tenacity. Tenacity, purpose, perseverance, and total disregard for “quit” defines this fluid friend.

Think of this. Those beautiful canyon walls rising majestically some twenty stories above us as we run, walk or peddle were all formed by the relentless, unremitting, uncompromising, efforts of little Spearfish Creek. With dogged determination it has persevered for countless centuries to wear away resistance, follow a chosen path, and make a way for itself. I romantically refer to the “music, babble, chuckle” of Spearfish Creek…. we need to remember she can also “rant, rave, torrent, rush, plunge, tantrum”. I don’t know what the original goal of that little stream was, but she did choose to attack the rocks and make her way instead of settling for puddle status, thus creating a monumental niche for herself.

And we have that same potential. We can be the creek.

Making a plan, following the plan, and believing in ourselves, can result in as total an all-around wellness package as age, genetics, and fickle fate will allow. Think of that as you navigate---by whatever means---that curvaceous byway. We are all on a journey of discovery, of survival, of making our own way regardless of circumstances, road blocks, or speed bumps. We can own our world, and by deciding what path we want our life to take, can keep at it and make it work. The rocks of life can become the protectors of that pathway. Let the spirit of the creek run with you, run beside you, run through you, and wherever you decide to take a break, go bathe your legs in the cool therapy of her icy waters….you are a winner.

But enough of talk. Take a leap of faith and suspend reality with a virtual marathon. Listen.

Canyon Calling

Spearfish Canyon, the playground for a wide variety of sports, is calling all women (runners and walkers) and men (supporters and cheerleaders) to enjoy a breathtaking morning in its majestic presence by competing in the Leading Ladies’ Marathon. A 26.2 mile race/journey/experience/challenge in nature’s natural venue…come run with us.

Picture this; a perfect place, a perfect pace, a perfect race, and women in charge. Knowing a marathon is about speed, and that this is going to be a fast run, I still encourage taking time to look around and savor the scenic serenity…it’s a spiritual journey for me; that’s why I wanted to share it.

Okay, on your marks. As you leave the Lead Country Club and spill out onto Hanna road, Cyclone Hill winds up (yes, up, sorry) long enough for you to get your heart rate up and your toes back down…then peaks to a glorious long down-hill that’s tempting to race, be aware.

Drift into comfortable rolling hills sentineled by moss draped spruce, some marsh grass areas, and story-book cabins tucked into the hills. At four miles a “Thomas Kincaid” manse hosts a garden grotto of Mary, reminder of another powerful woman. Meander past the Hanna Campground, check out the deer grazing in the sudden meadows, and watch for fish leaping in the seldom ponds along the road. You may even see an early fisherman casting in the predawn quiet.

Arriving at the intersection of Hanna Road and Hwy 385 in 5.5 spectacular miles; look both ways, cross over by Wickiup Village and run .1 on Hwy 385 to Cheyenne Crossing, site of the Cheyenne to Deadwood stage route. A smooth transition left onto Hwy 14A begins another 5.5 miles of tree lined roadway to

Savoy, oasis of food, drink and lodging (surprise to the seclusion seduced runner!) and the 11 mile mark.

A quick left turn up Little Spearfish Canyon presents another opportunity to experience a variation on the theme of trees and cliffs and beauty (did I mention tranquility?) Seven tenths of a mile toward Roughlock Falls is the turn-around … the falls are worth a trip back…check the limestone cliffs six stories above and picture “Wind in His Hair” on his pinto pony proclaiming his allegiance to Dunbar. On a still day you can almost hear the stentorian echo…”I—am—his—friend!” reverberate among the massive rugged giants.

Exiting Roughlock Road, appreciate the rustic beauty of Spearfish Canyon Lodge and Latchstring Inn, plan to come back for dinner, then hit automatic pilot. It’s all down-hill on the quintessential Scenic Byway. “Cruisin’ the Canyon” is what you came for…curves ahead!

Towering canyon walls of Deadwood Shale, Englewood Limestone and Paha Sapa Limestone form an area of protection beside sparkling Spearfish Creek for the next 12 miles. Slow down so you can enjoy “The Dice”, two huge boulders that rolled across the highway one night and came to rest in Spearfish Creek. Check out historic Maurice Hydro-plant, walk the water-stop to lacy Bridal Veil Falls, and wonder at the flora diversity of Botany Bay. Enjoy the stoic beauty of a canyon twelve times more ancient than Grand Canyon.

Twenty-five miles, time to brake for Winterville. Curve onto the bike path and lope toward Spearfish City Park, then cross the bridge over your stalwart escort, Spearfish Creek, and celebrate a satisfying sprint to the finish line.

Strut through the park and show off your medal, or soak your weary legs in the icy therapy of the creek…..you’re a STAR!

COURAGE IN THE CANYON: LEADING LADIES’ MARATHON 2014 The classic beauty of Spearfish Canyon was immeasurably enhanced by the glittering necklace of women lacing the course on Sunday morning. They are the heroes. The partnership of event and participants is only complete with the one-hundred percent effort, desire, vision and dream of both; this transpired on a sun drenched course and balmy day. Nearly 500 women met at the top of Spearfish Canyon in the predawn chill, and at the starting gun began to greet the sun as it topped the Canyon wall. Twenty-six point two miles and two point fifty-nine hours later, identical twin sisters crossed the finish line in Spearfish City Park and were draped with identical crown shaped medals by identical twin boys.

“Queen of the Road” was our theme for this tenth year anniversary, and Queens of the Road were they all. A royal convoy of courage.

So many stories, so many smiles, so many personal records having nothing to do with time (although a stunning 20 Boston Qualifiers does presuppose bragging rights!), and so many new and wonderful relationships.

I treasure every comment; every ‘thank you’, every sweaty hug, every tear-drop and each gift of experiencing a completed goal. The camaraderie of sisters, the comfort offered by all our volunteers and the added cadre of Air Force personnel passing out water and positives enhanced the trek. We all have our stories, as unique and distinctive as the individual masterpieces we are. If it was a special challenge met, a special dream reached, stories that Dianne Gates, Ryan Olson, touched the heart; running Elaine Doll-Dunn, Zack Olson was the vehicle, Spearfish and Lianne Shepherd.

Pump House at Mind Blown Studios

by Adam Gomez The Black Hills have many attractions for visitors to experience. Few are as unique as the Pump House at Mind Blown studios in Deadwood. They have much to offer for any traveler weary after being in the sun all day, or a local looking for something new to see they might have seen before.

The Pump House has a full deli and coffee shop for customers to enjoy, including locally roasted coffee drinks (hot, iced, or frozen), smoothies, soft drinks, beer, and wine. To accompany your drink, choose from a dozen different breakfast and lunch sandwiches available. All are made fresh to order. For something a little sweeter, try one of the pastries with a cup of coffee.

You will definitely want something to drink when the kiln is going on the other side of the Pump House at Mind Blown Studios. Mind Blown Studios opened its doors in January of 2014 bringing the unique art of glass blowing to the Black Hills. Owner and operator, Toni Gerlach, has been blowing glass since she was in high school at the age of 15 when she was enrolled in lessons in Las Vegas. Her passion grew from there for glass blowing. Customers can see Toni honing her craft during the day at Mind Blown Studios. “You will get the experience of watching hand blown glass items being crafted in front of your eyes. “ Toni says, “We explain the steps and the equipment and the process;

from gathering the molten glass, blowing the item, and cooling the item to a hard glass form.”

While seeing this very unique art happening is a great experience, at Mind Blown Studios you are welcome to partake in the fun!

They offer lessons for all to enjoy. The lessons are similar to where Toni started in high school. She says, “Anyone who is willing to learn is welcomed to participate in a glass blowing class. I am passionate about giving one-onone instruction and sharing the art form of glass blowing, so that those interested can experience this awesome craft.“ Along with the experience, visitors that partake in a lesson will take home the item they have created. For visitors that are just taking in the experience of watching hand blown glass items being crafted by Toni, there are many items she has created that are available for purchase as a souvenir.

Jack Hale: Black Hills Pioneer

Some of the early pioneers who settled in the Black Hills led remarkable and accomplished lives.

One such pioneer was John “Jack” Dickenson Hale.

In 1868, at the age of 21, Jack left his birthplace of Oldtown, Virginia, seeking opportunity and excitement in the young railroad town of Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory. He soon found work as a teamster for a freighting company, delivering supplies to army posts. It was demanding and dangerous work, but the pay was good. Jack worked hard, saved his money and soon bought a team of oxen and a wagon, establishing his own freighting business.

Before long, Jack’s desire to explore new country once again surfaced. He and his team headed west, landing in Salt Lake City via the Oregon and Mormon Trails. The lure of the west, with iall its potential and possibilties, apparently ran through the veins of Hale’s entire family. In the early 1870s, while still in Salt Lake City, Jack received word that his parents and younger brother Tom, had picked up and moved from Virginia to Battle Creek, Nebraska, to open a general store. Homesteaders were flocking to that part of the country and the Hale family viewed this great agricultural migration as an economic opportunity.

This time, rather than setting his sights on some place even further west, Jack turned his team and wagon eastward, to join his family in Battle Creek.

Once there, he dove right into the process of laying out the new town, worked on marketing area farmers’ productions of livestock and crops and continued freighting with his brother, Tom. After the town was organized, the residents elected Jack to serve as sheriff.

The draw of adventure and profit were, once again, too much for Jack to resist. In 1877, he turned in his badge, choosing to take his fleet of freighting wagons to Camp Sheridan, a stockade post in northern Nebraska near Chief Spotted Tail’s agency. Jack was to supply provisions for 5,000 people of the Brule Lakota chief’s tribe during their relocation to land nearly 300 miles to the east. When the

relocation trip was complete, Jack made his way back to Battle Creek, where he and Tom quickly began making plans for a freighting trip to the Black Hills.

The discovery of gold in the Black Hills was the hot topic of the day. Newspapers all across the country were full of articles and advertisements touting the lure of gold and the many riches to be found in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory. The Hale brothers soon realized they too could find a profit in the Black Hills; not with gold panning, but with bringing much needed supplies to all those fortune seekers who rushed into Deadwood gulch. The wagons were swiftly loaded, brimming to the top with all manner of products a gold-mining town would need. In addition, the brothers drove 446 hogs, 86 head of cattle and 18 horses northwestward with them to the Black Hills.

Jack continued freighting goods into the Black Hills, making a lucrative living and several lifelong friends, including Seth Bullock. Having built up a small fortune, he decided to leave the life of a bullwhacker behind and start a ranch. He purchased 1,960 acres of land near Tilford and established Pleasant Valley Stock Farm, which he stocked with 4,500 sheep along with cattle, hogs and horses. It seems Jack had finally settled down and made a reputation for himself as a progressive businessman. In 1880, he was elected to the Dakota legislature, then called the territorial council, where he and four other members represented the entire country in the two Dakotas west of the Missouri River. Hale would go on to serve eight years in the House of Representatives and six years in the Senate.

Before heading off to Yankton and his duties as a legislator, Jack returned to Battle Creek to marry Anna E. Kost on January 6, 1881. After the ceremony, the newlywed couple journeyed by stagecoach through a howling blizzard across Nebraska, even-

tually arriving in the Territorial Capital. After the session was over, Jack and Anna, who had never seen her future home, took a boat up the Missouri River to Ft. Pierre and then the new stage service from there to the Black Hills. The second leg of the trip took eight days, after which Anna was certainly glad to be in the comforts of her new home.

With an entrepreneurial spirit and a life-long fascination to try something new, Jack became a horse rancher. A number of businesses and industries in the area—mining, timber, the Army—were dependent upon horse power, and he wanted to supply them with the goods to meet their needs.

The JH Ranch, the horse ranch, was located along the Belle Fourche River, east of Devils Tower. The ranch produced work horses as well as race horses, both of which were in demand.

One race horse, Big Sis, amassed an impressive record of wins on the Black Hills turf tracks and had a loyal following.

Jack was present at the 1905 inauguration ceremonies for Theodore Roosevelt in Washington, D.C. Roosevelt invited his good friend Seth Bullock to attend the ceremonies and encouraged Seth to bring along several of their cowboy friends. Seth immediately thought of Jack, and off they went, along with 58 others, to celebrate in the nation’s capital.

Jack and Anna had only one child, a daughter named Florence, born in 1881. In 1903, Jack sold the Pleasant Valley Stock Farm and moved the family to Sturgis, which had grown into a thriving community. Four years later, the beautiful young Florence married Jesse Blane Nafzger, the town doctor. The couple had two children, daughter Robinette and son Jack, who proved to be the apples of their grandfather’s eye. Jack doted on his grandchildren and provided them with many unique and unusual gifts, including the handsome small buggy on display at the Adams Museum on the mezzanine level.

Jack Hale passed away in 1929 at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, who passed away in 1924. Jack embodied the spirit of the Black Hills pioneer. He was adventurous, an entrepreneur, a statesman, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a great friend to many. He left a lasting mark on the history of the Black Hills and the state of South Dakota.

Just a few months before his own death in September of 1919, Seth Bullock completed his efforts on the construction of The Friendship Tower as a commemorative monument honoring the life and recent death of his enduring friend, Theodore Roosevelt. Dedicated on July 4th, 1919, The Friendship Tower still stands today on Mt. Roosevelt and is a favorite destination for many.

Traveling just north of Deadwood (on Hwy 85), turn onto Mt. Roosevelt Road. It is the same turn that leads to Lodge at Deadwood entrance. Go past the Lodge entrance and in approximately one mile Mt. Roosevelt Road turns to the right and becomes a gravel road. Take the gravel road; don’t continue on the paved road. In less than a mile and a half, you will be greeted by the “Mt. Parking is aplenty and you will see the two interpretive signs at the start of the trail. All of the interpretive signs are enlightening and worth the time to peruse.

On the short hiking trail (less than a mile out and back) to the tower, there are many interesting and beautiful sites. The trail winds through the aspens, evergreens and other stunning vegetation revealing spectacular views and providing respectable exercise. many photo opportunities. Before venturing onto any trail, verify that all hiking party members’ physical fitness level meets or exceeds the trails’ requirements.

Then, there it is! The Friendship Tower lies straight ahead.

Climbing the spiral staircase and peering through the window portals makes climbing to the top an adventure all by itself. Be very careful! The rise from step to step is unusually high and there is not always good footing; especially on the steps leading to the Tower’s base.

Maneuvering up and down throughout the tower can be dangerous.

At the top, 360 degrees of impressive scenery awaits.

Before leaving the tower, there is more additional interpretive information and picnic tables available for hikers that brought a snack.

The trail back to the parking area eventually beckons.

Hopefully, a return trip to The Friendship Tower will happen soon. The gravel road leading to the tower is narrow, rarely plowed in the winter and winds through the forest with no guard rail and steep drop-offs. As always, drive carefully and tread lightly.

The Return of the Buffalo

It is estimated that at one time between 30 to 60 million buffalo roamed the North American continent. Accounts from settlers and cavalry soldiers alike described a buffalo herd as being so massive, even after several days on horseback, they had still not reached the end of the herd. However, during the 1800s, the buffalo were systematically extermi- Courtesy - Kansas Historical Society nated by the thousands and by the end of the 19th century, less than 1,000 remained. The buffalo had vanished from the Great Plains.

When the West became open for settlement, the tribes of the Great Plains were opposed to giving up their hunting lands. The Tribes followed the migration patterns of the buffalo. From this one animal, the Indian had everything he needed for his daily sustenance: meat for food, hides for clothing and lodges, robes were used as winter blankets, bones were used for tools, organs provided drinking and cooking vessels, the horns were made into utensils, the sinew strung their bows and the skull was the focal point of their religious ceremonies. No part of the buffalo was wasted. The brains were used to tan the hides to make them soft and pliable, the stomach was reinforced with sticks and made into a cooking vessel and the bladder would be dried and used to hold water. As Lakota elder, John Fire Lame Deer once said “The buffalo was a part of us, his flesh and blood being our own flesh and blood. Our clothing, our tipis, everything we needed for life came from the buffalo’s body. It was hard to say where the animal ended and the man began”. It was a way of life that suited the tribe well - to roam the earth as free as the buffalo and live in harmony with the land and its other inhabitants.

However, Courtesy - Wind Cave as a young country began to expand its western boundaries and European settlers flooded the Plains, the nomadic lifestyle of both the Indian and the buffalo would soon come to a swift and tragic end.

The development of the railroad upset the migration patterns of the buffalo and carried deadly consequences for those animals that remained in their grazing areas. Scores of passengers who wanted to experience the “thrill” of a buffalo hunt, took to the trains and killed buffalo by the thousands right from the comfort of their train car. Between 1872 and 1874, over 10,000 hunters killed an average of 5,000 bison

EACH DAY, EVERY DAY for two years.

As the buffalo diminished, the tribes of the Great Plains struggled to retain their way of life. The United States military recognized the great significance the buffalo had to Native tribes, which sealed the fate of the herds forever.

General Sherman considered the buffalo hunters as powerful a weapon as an entire regiment of soldiers in wiping out the enemy. By exterminating the buffalo, the tribes would be conquered. By the late 1880s, there were less than 1,000 buffalo left and Native American people were forced onto parcels of land called reservations.

During this time, a bison restoration movement had begun. Several individuals set out to rescue some of the remaining buffalo in hopes of reviving the once great herds. One of the most famous of these bison saviors was found right here in South Dakota.

Scotty Philip has been called “The Buffalo King” and received much notoriety for his efforts to rescue the buffalo in the northern plains. Born Courtesy - Susan Ricci in Scotland, Scotty emigrated to the United States in 1874 and would eventually establish a cattle ranch near what is now known as Philip, South Dakota. It was there that he learned about the Dupuis buffalo herd. Deciding he wanted to help prevent the extinction of the buffalo, and perhaps influenced by his wife who was Native American, Philip purchased the buffalo from the Dupuis estate. At the time there was over 50 head. During Philip’s short life, he watched his herd grow to over 1,000 buffalo, the largest in North America.

During the restoration movement, many of the remaining bison were integrated into state and national parks across the country. In South Dakota, there are three major parks that are home to buffalo: Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park.

Wind Cave National Park celebrated one hundred years of buffalo in 2013 and this year, Custer State Park will mark its 100th anniversary of having buffalo in the park.

The Museum of the American Bison is dedicated to promoting the cultural and historical significance of the bison to North America and to Native American tribes across the country. Look for the Museum to re-open at Crazy Horse Mountain in the fall of 2014.

Crazy Horse Memorial: “Never Forget Your Dreams” That’s the motto that has stirred millions of people for several decades as they witnessed the carving of a mountain in the Black Hills called Crazy Horse Memorial. An amazing woman who was born on the East coast and came to the Black Hills to help Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski carve a memorial to the Indians of North America has left a legacy that will be long remembered.

Ruth Ross was born June 26, 1926, in Hartford, Connecticut. She first met Korczak Ziolkowski at age 13 when she and a girlfriend mustered the courage to call at the sculptor’s home in West Hartford seeking the autograph of a well-known movie star who was visiting at the time. Two years later, Ruth met Korczak again when she was among a group of volunteers helping to raise money for the statue of Noah Webster which the sculptor was carving as a gift to West Hartford.

Korczak’s challenge to honor the Native American came when Chief Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota from South Dakota, wrote Korczak in 1939 asking him to carve a memorial “so the White man would know that the Indian had great hero’s also.” Korczak had Photo 1 worked briefly on Mt. Rushmore Memorial.

Standing Bear heard about Korczak thru newspaper coverage of his carving honoring Paderewski at the World’s Fair. After service in World War 2 Korczak took up Standing Bear’s challenge.

Korczak came to the Black Hills on May 3, 1947.

Ruth followed a short time later, working as a volunteer to help create a memorial honoring the North American Indian. She helped Korczak prepare the

logs for the log studio-home, as well as construct the 741-step wooden staircase to the top of the mountain.

Ruth and Korczak were married at Crazy Horse on Thanksgiving Day, 1950. Together, they shared the hard work and the joys of undertaking such a massive project. While Korczak worked on the mountain, Ruth managed the visitor complex. She also helped run the large dairy farm and lumber mill which was started to help sustain Crazy Horse through the difficult, early years.

Together Ruth and Korczak had 10 children, five boys and five girls, all of whom were born at home. Crazy Horse became very much a family project with John, Dawn, Adam, Jadwiga, Casimir, Anne, Mark, Joel, Monique and Marinka all growing up helping with what had become a family project. At the time of her passing, Ruth’s family had grown to include 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Realizing that Ruth might one day inherit the responsibility of carrying on the Crazy Horse dream, Korczak prepared three books of comprehensive plans for the continuation of the mountain carving. ©Crazy Horse That day arrived in 1982 when Korczak passed away at the age of 74. Ruth served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation ever since, staying actively involved right up until the day she died. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Korczak, and their daughter Anne.

Ruth was the inspirational leader of the Crazy Horse project and provided a steady guiding hand.

Never Forget Your Dreams continued on the massive mountain sculpture, the Indian Museum of North America was expanded significantly, the Indian University of North America became reality, and the Foundation’s Scholarship Program grew to exceed $2 million in cumulative fiPhoto 2 nancial assistance awarded to Native American students.

Affectionately known as “Mrs. Z”, Ruth loved her work. To her, it was simply a way of life and she lived each day with ©Crazy Horse a sense of purpose and a strong spirit. Ruth possessed the inner strength and iron-will needed to persevere through difficult and challenging times and she faced adversity with courage and conviction. Ruth’s legacy is one defined by faith and fortitude that anything is possible if you are willing to work hard enough and never give up.

With great foresight, Korczak established a 501C3 non-profit foundation to work with the family to make sure the giant mountain carving would be continued after his death. Ruth and the Crazy Horse Foundation Board have been working for some years on a succession plan. A year ago Ruth and the board chose Dr. Laurie Becvar as the President and Chief Operating Officer for Photo 3 Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation to work with Ruth’s daughters Monique and Jadwiga in their roles as co-CEO’s. As an Executive Man©Crazy Horse agement Team they have been working for a year on the exciting aspects of the project. Ruth worked with the team right up to her death.

Korczak had the vision for three main parts to the memorial. The mountain carving began immediately, but he also planned for the Indian Museum of North America™, The Indian University of North Ameri-

ca™ and The Medical Training Center™.

Planning is underway for advancements in all areas of the mountain carving. For the first time, a study is underway to determine a projected completion date for the mountain and the cost. This will aid friends and visitors who want to be part of the funding process for the project, make decisions on contributing toward the goals of honoring the North American Indians, all tribes.

Photo 4 Long range planning is also underway on establishing a degree granting university, in tandem with a higher education partner, to go beyond the now very successful summer university program in which students receive 12 to 14 college academic credits including a credit bearing, paid internship. The fifth summer program began this month and 32 students are enrolled from 8 states and 11 tribes throughout the nation. The will be honored at a completion ceremony in August.

With Ruth’s untimely death the Crazy Horse Memorial team is saddened and missing her. But, it was and is her wish for us to keep on with our parts of the dream as we continue a very successful summer season. And welcome thousands of visitors a day to hear the story of the Indians of North America.

Poet’s Table Some have heard about it, few talk about it, and only a handful of people can take you right up to it. Poet’s Table seems like a simple premise but it ends up being a whole different experience. “I’ve been up there looking for it ten times in the last ten years, hiking all over those hills and didn’t find it until last year,” a Deadwood local explained.

Directions to Poet’s Table found online appear more as riddles than directions and do little to inspire confidence. For this and other reasons it remains one of the best kept secrets in the Black Hills.

Erected in 1969, Poet’s Table is a large, sturdy table, accompanied by four chairs and a cabinet, all clad in a thick coat of matching green paint, resting in a hidden alcove just above the beaten path. The recess that hides the table is above the trail and sunken behind a pair of three foot tall boulders, allowing for a stunning show of the surrounding hills while remaining hidden from the path below.

I can only imagine how many hikers have been a couple dozen steps away from Poet’s Table and never known, as was the case in our first visit. After following the clues to its location, it still took over two hours of scouring the various hillsides to find out that where we regularly regrouped was within a stone’s throw from the table.

While the hike “should” take about 20 minutes from the parking lot, don’t take that to mean it’s

a leisurely stroll. You will break a sweat and you will breathe a little harder.

After you’ve successfully decoded the directions and made it over the rim to Poet’s Table the magic truly begins. As you catch your breath you can take in the amazing view of the surrounding hills as well as the myriad of trinkets and gifts left by previous visitors that are stashed all over the rock face. Names and notes of past travelers scrawled across the wall in chalk or knife or anything they could find at the time, turned the wall itself into an enormous guest book of sorts.

And then there’s the cabinet.

Barely four feet tall and a foot deep, it stands unimposing behind the table and chairs, containing a vast library of humanity. Prying the doors open reveals dozens of books, notebooks, and boxes filled with mementos. Almost all of the notebooks are full of nearly half a century’s worth of names, poetry, stories, and experiences of those who ventured there before you. It would take weeks to read everything stored in that one tiny cabinet.

Examining the various offerings and memoirs of predecessors it begins to feel more like an alter of tranquility than just a table on a hillside. Sitting there with no sounds but the wind in the hills and its wildlife, it’s easy to forget the thousands of visitors circling the area and the busy lake not a mile away. article and photos courtesy of Dan Argo

Get High on Harney Peak Located in the Black Elk Wilderness of the Black Hills National Forest, Harney Peak is the highest natural point in South Dakota. At over 7,240 feet, it is the highest peak in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains.

The stone fire tower was completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and as of 1967 was no longer actively staffed on a full-time basis. It is, however, visited frequently by adventurous hikers.

Trail #9, beginning at Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park is the most common route to the summit . This trails is only moderately difficult at the start but is much more challenging as the trail nears the top. If a hiker is looking for an even more challenging route,

the lesser used northern approach, beginning at the Willow Creek Horse Camp, provides additional elevation gain that rewards trekkers with awe-inspiring scenery. “I was standing on the highest mountain of them all, and round about beneath me was the whole hoop of the world. Jewel Cave National Monument: A Real Gem Scheduled to be completed in July of 2015, the on-going construction around the Visitor Center, in the parking lot and on Highway 16 are reportedly on schedule. These upgrades will certainly enhance future experiences at Jewel Cave but even in the midst of the improvements, a visit to the Monument is still top notch.

While prospecting in 1900, the Michaud brothers discovered the cave and named it Jewel Cave because of the appearance of the calcite crystals that they observed. Approximately 8 years later, President Theodore Roosevelt gave the cave National Monument status.

With many different tours to choose from, each visitor should be able to find a tour that will match their desire and interest. Please check with the NPS http://www.nps.gov/ jeca/index.htm for available tour availability at different times of year, cost, and other important information (including safety!).

Jewel Cave is the third longest cave in the world photo by s.d. dept. tourism and currently has over 166

miles of charted passages. That number is ever increasing as explorers are continually mapping uncharted areas of the vast system.

Although the cave is the major draw to the Monument, many more educational and recreational opportunities exist.

Jewel Cave provides a fantastic visitor center staffed by friendly and knowledgeable Rangers, interactive demonstrations on the patio, fun/ educational programs and superb hiking trails.

The short Roof Trail (approximately one-half mile) features an overlook with beautiful scenery of the forest and area canyons. The 3.5 mile Canyons Trail meanders through the Ponderosa Pines, Lithograph Canyon and Hell Canyon.

The trailhead of Hell Canyon Trail is located app. 1 mile west of the Visitor Center and provides a 5.5 mile moderate hike through beautiful scenery.

As always, research your chosen trail to make sure your chosen route matches your ability level.

Black Hills Artist Creates Termespheres Article by Jodi Mathis

The Black Hills is home to an internationally admired artist, who has been recognized in places all across the world. Dick Termes, whose family grew up in Spearfish and Whitewood, created an art gallery for himself about 21 years ago.

According to Termes’ website, Termespheres are revolving three-dimensional space/time exploration of an entirely closed universe. When you look into the spheres you are looking at a complete world or environment. Termes started his journey in 1968-69 while in school at the University of Wyoming.

The globes that he makes are hung from ceiling motors and as you watch them rotate you will see north, south, east, west, up and down. The optical illusion is an inside out view of the world around you.

“We had a profession that required us to think about what we could spend our life working on and I decided I would just throw out some of the things I had been teaching with line perspective,” Termes said. “A professor didn’t push you into it, you had to come up with something and we critiqued each other. I came up with a four point perspective and that grew into the 6 point perspective.”

Dick says that you have to imagine yourself in a transparent ball. You are standing in the middle of the junction in the road, one goes east and west and one goes north and south. The roads look like they come to points at the horizon and they meet together.

Termes travels all across the world so that he can take pictures of places that he wants to make into Termespheres.

“It is almost like a panoramic photograph. I take pictures in all directions and it helps me when I go back home so that I know what the old buildings look like,” Termes said.

The Termesphere Gallery is located off of I-90. Take exit 14 to East Colorado Blvd. Head west on Colorado Blvd. and turn left on Christensen Drive. The gallery will be 1.7 miles up the road on your left.

The Black Hills are home to many magnificent destinations and attractions. Angostura (Spanish for “Narrows�) Reservoir, located approximately 10 miles southeast of Hot Springs, is a diverse, recreational destination. Along with the many activity opportunities, the scenery is outstanding.

The dam was constructed on the Cheyenne River by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1949 for irrigation purposes. When full, the reservoir can cover an area over 4500 land acres.

Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Angostura. Featuring a floating convenience store, boat ramps and a marina, fisherman flock to the area to catch walleye, pike, bass and more.

For those that love camping, Angostura is a haven. Each campground has flush toilets and showers and each site has a gravel or paved pad. Even with five great campgrounds, make sure you book your spot early at www.campsd.com.

Angostura is also a favorite location for birders. Local birds are numerous and because of its large size and location, the reservoir also attracts many migratory birds.

Other activities include canoeing, disc golf, hiking, horseshoes, swimming (yes, there is a beach!), volleyball, and more!

Wall Drug Dinosaur The iconic landmark has stood watch over Wall, SD for decades. This 80 foot Brontosaurus (Apatosaurus) is a memorable attraction for many and befittingly resides near the Badlands where the fossil beds are as complete as anywhere in North America. However, if you were one of the many children that lived east of Wall, SD and made return trips to the Black Hills on your family vacations, this huge creature meant much more than that.

Sure, depending on where you lived, there were other notable points of interest. The Missouri River is magnificent. Towns along the road hold treasures that can seemingly only be found while on vacation in cities which you do not live. The Corn Palace! Al’s Oasis at Oacoma is the seemingly life-saving sanctuary on the journey!

But… Not until you pass the Badlands… Peering out the windows of the vehicle, searching the

horizon until finally… THERE IT IS! The Wall Drug Dinosaur has been spotted and now you know that you are almost there! You have reached the mecca that is Wall Drug and now your vacation begins! Even though you have traveled so many tourist-friendly miles, the sighting of that huge dinosaur is inspirational!

Emmet Sullivan built the dinosaur. He also built the dinosaurs at photo courtesy of Rick Hustead Dinosaur Park in Rapid City and the seal that used to welcome travelers to Marine Life south of Rapid City (if you can remember that!).

When Interstate 90 was constructed, the green and white “greeter to the west” had to be moved. Although it was only moved approximately 100 yards or so, Rick Hustead (Wall Drug owner) recounts that “it was no small feat moving him to his present location!”

WHAT IS THAT? There it is! But what is it? When you are spending time in the Black Hills, you may see several of these creatures, but what are they? The brownish/ yellowish fur is evident and the animal is about the size of a cat, but it has short legs and a flat head. It’s not a outdoor heir dog or beaver or a prairie dog. It’s not a tree squirrel and it certainly isn’t a fox.

The social, burrowing rodent you have witnessed is related to the woodchuck and is a common type of ground squirrel. In binomial nomenclature it is known as “Marmota flaviventris”.

Yes, you have spotted a Yellow Bellied Marmot!

In many areas, it is commonly called a Rock Chuck. This colonial, underground dweller can be found in forests, grasslands and areas of high elevation. Although often visible above ground foraging for grass and other plants, the Rock Chuck loves to burrow below rocks to protect itself from terrestrial predators like coyotes and also airborne attacks from birds of prey like eagles, hawks, and others.

An adult yellow bellied marmot weighs approximately 8 pounds and has easily observed identifiers including pale yellow spots on the sides of the face, yellowish colored belly fur, and a white patch of fur between the eyes. They also have a fairly flat, but fluffy tail.

Being a fairly social animal, it would be possible to get fairly close to a yellow bellied marmot in the wild, but it is highly discouraged. They have sharp teeth and share their habit with some dangerous creatures! Wildlife can be dangerous! Do not approach!

So while you are out in the Black Hills looking for more well-known wild species like turkey, prairie dogs, coyotes, deer, buffalo and other native species, you can now identify your new friend, the Yellow Bellied Marmot.
