BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Rachel Woodroof Rachel Woodruff is originally from Sturgis and went to college in Vermillion at USD. She graduated with a bachelor of science in mass communications and public relations. Rachel, her husband Justin and daughter Rylee, 6 moved to Belle Fourche where Rylee attends 1st grade at South Park Elementary. Rachel is a market development executive for Beam Technologies. Her vision for the chamber is to continue the community’s revitalization efforts, and promote incentives to attract young families and new small businesses to town. She would like to see more emphasis placed on housing and infrastructure as essential elements for growth.

The Belle Fourche Chamber of Commerce serves to promote our members, the commercial, civic, and general interests of the city of Belle Fourche, and our trade area. As a voluntary organization our aim is to represent and advocate for our members and the business community as a whole.

We are not a civic club, a charitable organization, or department of city government. We are a private, non-profit, taxpaying corporation focused on improving the community and businesses of Belle Fourche. We’re compromised of people — people just like you, who realize that we can accomplish more collectively than individually.

The Autism Society of the Black Hills was founded in 1997 and is a nonprofit affiliate of the Autism Society of America (ASA). The Black Hills Chapter joined to enable all families and others associated with an autistic, Asperger’s or Pervasive Development Disorder individual to have access to support groups, meetings, additional information and resources. So much can be accomplished when parents and professionals join together to advocate for their children. Our goal is to provide information, support and encouragement to those families and individuals in need.

BELLE FOURCHE HISTORY

LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

WHAT – BELLE FOURCHE -THE CENTER OF THE NATION – HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!

- Well, the Geographic Center of the Nation, including the states of Alaska and Hawaii. Before these two states were added to the nation in 1959, Lebanon, Kansas was the center of the contiguous United States, so named in 1912 when Arizona and New Mexico were added. In 1912 the US Geodetic Survey did not have complex digital methods of determining the geographic center. Instead, they used a cardboard cutout of the nation and balanced it on the head of a pin. Now Belle Fourche is designated as the Geographic Center of the Nation by the US National Geodetic Survey, even though they admit that an exact measurement is nearly impossible due to the fluidity of the shorelines. A new method developed by PHD Peter Rogerson in 2015 takes into consideration the curvature of the earth.

TRADEMARK NOTICE! Center of the Nation Trademark - Yearly Contracts are now available for our members to use the Center of the Nation Trademark. Please complete the application and return to the Chamber. We do charge a Royalty Fee based on the wholesale cost of goods sold. Royalty Rate: 25%- Based on wholesale cost of goods sold.

Did you know only 14% of money spent at chain retailers stays in the local economy, compared to 48% of money spent at independent businesses. Through operations, jobs and community initiatives, money spent at local businesses stays in the local economy, while 86% of money spent at chain retailers leaves the community. Shop Local and keep our economy vibrant and healthy.
