Welcome to our 2020 production sale. Time to sit down once again and welcome everyone to our 44th annual production sale. As I do this, it is Thanksgiving time and I reflect what a great blessing it has been to be in this industry. We are so blessed to have meet so many great friends and associates.

We just finished with videos, so I got a good look at all the individuals in the sale. I can say without reservation that this is the deepest, most uniform set of bulls that we have ever offered. The heifers are straight from the heart of our herd. I have always held the opinion that if we are going to sell a female, she better be one that we want to keep ourselves. After you look through the pen, I think you will agree we nailed it this year.

Welcome/Sale Terms

Sale Terms:

I am so proud of this cow herd that has produced these sale lots. We made the decision to move to a fall calving herd many years ago and got told by friends and family that we were nuts. Fall calving in Bear Lake is crazy. Now we get calls asking advice on how to manage fall calving cows. My answer is: it isn’t easy but the right kind of cows can do it. She better be maternal, fertile and easy keeping or it won’t work. Remember every pound of calf that is raised is produced by harvested forage. Not a good recipe for success but we have built an exceptional set of cows that do it. We have achieved less than 2% open rates and one service AI conception rates in the mid 70’s. We have place emphasis on all the important traits that make cattle profitable and believe that single trait selection is a one-way road to disaster. We also believe in using EPD’s as a tool but only as a tool. Those that select on EPD’s alone will certainly be short lived. Phenotype, structure and those convenience traits are important to us and drive this program. We feel fortunate to have our son, Logan giving us advice on herd sires. In his travels he sees more cattle than anyone else going up and down the road. With his keen eye for good structure and the ability to sort those animals with true muscle from those with “white” muscle. We discuss those sires that will work for our situation. After talking with Dr. Holt about PAP issues on this list we make our breeding decisions on which bulls will work for us, to bring you a top set of breeding cattle. Thus it puts us at a great advantage in Sire Selection.

So, as you browse through the offering in the catalog, online or when you come to look at them, I think you will agree that this is truly a great set of bulls and females. Buy with confidence that your investment will be a good one. We are always close by the phone to answer any questions or ready to show you them in person. Thank you for your support in the past and we look forward to continue to earn your trust in the future. For those that may be new to us please feel free to call anytime. We like discussing cattle.

Excitement is named exactly as he should be. This bull is exciting in every part of the production cycle. If you look at his numerical data there is not an area that he doesn’t excell. Growth, milk and carcass EPD’s are tops in the Hereford breed. Actual production figures that validate the EPD profile. PAP score to allow him to work at any elevation desired. I should have your attention to this point but as good as all this data is, his Pheno type is more exciting! This stud is the real deal. He is wide bodied, aceptable frame, masculine and expressively muscled. Set on sound feet and legs this bull is a mover and will cover any kind of terrain you run him in. Sensation calves have been topping sales all across the country for a reason. 8521 is among the best sons of this great sire that comes from the Select Sires lineup. An impressive looking bull with an EPD profile that is as good as it gets. He is balanced, not only in figures but in look. He packs meat and muscle with thickness throughout his body. He has a pretty Angus head and neck. Blends well into shoulders, which are tight and correct in their angles. His mid-section exhibits capacity and volume. He is broad across his back and thick in his quarter, deep in his twist. He is a prolific breeder and covers the cows he is turned out with on time. His real value shows up in his females. They are fertile, good uddered and easy to be around. His first crop of females are just now calving and the reports are impressive and pleasing on what good mothers they are developing into. Odyssey is a bull that puts it all together. Talk about balanced EPD’s, double digit CED, Negative BW then bouncing into top of the breed growth numbers. His Maternal EPD’s are also equally impressive. What is even better with 8109 is his EPD’s have matched what he turned in with his individual performance. Going from 62 lbs. at birth to an impressive 365 day wt. of 1405. He covers all the bases. When you evaluate him you see a bull that is long spined, deep thru his middle 1/3, thick topped and wide in his stance. He is very docile and easy to be around. The all powerfull VIKING. Here is a geneticlly designed powerhouse that has been a favorite from birth. He is double bred to the maternal giant and well known Donna 714 cow, arguably the best cow in the Angus Breed. Then toss in the great Finks beef genetic donor cow, Miss 1115. Two of the most maternally bred Angus donor cows. 816’s powerfull 3212 sire was our pick to use AI from the Coleman Angus herd when Larry told me that 3212 was heir apperent to his sire Charlo 0256. Viking has impeccable structure and exceptional eye appeal. This outstanding herd bull prospect is clean and stylish in his front 1/3 blending nicely in tight, properly angled shoulders. He exhibits a good spring to his ribs with depth and capacity throughout his middle section. Viking’s real power comes when viewing his back 1/3, from the side he is long and level in his hip with a big bold round. When standing behind him he is wide, deep and level over his hips. When he walks, he covers his tracks well and moves like like a cat. Dam has 2 daughters working in our herd and one son working for Wells (ID). Here is a Bear son out of a very good first calf heifer that is sired by the immortal Waylon W34. He is patterned very much like his daddy. He exhibits an attractive angus head and neck, working into a long spine with a broad and flat back. His thickness in his back indicates he will have a good rib eye and plenty of carcass merit. He was born small and grew well. His EPD profile along with his individual performance data indicates he could be used on larger framed heifes with supervision and his PAP score tells us he is good to go at all elevations. His dam is a sweetheart to be around. Very docile and easy to work, the kind I enjoy being around as I start showing a little of my age. 8612’s granddam is an easy keeping, good uddered and fertile female that has been with us for a long time. She is one of those cows that has all the convienence traits that many people sometimes forget when looking at all the data we lay down in front of you. Dam’s production record. Bearcat is a 7/8 brother to the lot 18 bull that will work on heifers for those looking for heifer bulls. 846 is more than just a heifer bull, his EPD profile gives us the indications that he has a wonderfull blending of Calving ease, Maternal and Carcass traits. Toss in his docility score and here is a bull to do it all. Low Birth, good growth, ample RE. His $M, $B and $C all indicate he covers all the bases. Then as you evaluate him you see the numbers all add up. Here is a moderate framed, tight shouldered, long spine rascal with lots of shape and thickness to his rib walking on correctly structured feet and legs. Blackbear is a sleep all night calving ease specialist. Sired by Bear and out of a first calf Black Granite heifer. Double digit CED and Negative BW EPD’s with ample growth numbers to make him a very usable bull for anyone. His impressive PAP score allows him to work at any elevation. This good Bear son might be the sleeper of the sale. His 2 year old dam did a good job. We went back into time to bring you the Montana bull. As many of you know there are not many females in the Angus breed better than the Sitz Alliance 6595 daughters. I wanted a daughter from the good ole 28 cow by 6595 but sometime we don’t get what we want but here is a bull that is among the top end of the pen in many measurable traits. If you walk out in the pen and pick top 5 bulls on just looks Montana will be on that list. His EPD profile might not look as cool as others in the sale but if you understand EPD’s you will know that is what happens to those older genetics but If you have been in the cattle business very long you will recognize Sitz Alliance 6595 as one the best time tested bulls. note 828 is ddc. POLLED, Pigment: LE 0 %, RE 100 %, Scrotal 100 % 69% Black Hereford. Black Bart is going to be a shaker and mover for his new owner. Look at this rascals performance!!! He went from a light birth weight of 77 lbs to record and impressive 1426 Lb. adj. 365 weight. He is sired by the high selling bull from the JN ranch. We love his dam, she is everything that a Black Hereford female should be. She is very maternal with a good udder and milk flow but then she has depth and capacity to be a true range cow. She walks on a great set of feet and legs which allows her to get on the hillsides to forage and make a living. She brings in a big calf every year for the Mattson’s where she resides now. Bart is getting better each and everyday. His muscle development in his rear 1/3 is very impressive for a young bulls. He is long spined, thick topped and very attractive in his front end.

We would like to thank Tristan Skinner for all the help that he has given to us over the years. Without his help Becky and I would not have been able to be where we are today. He is willing to do what it takes to get the task done. His service has spanned over 9 years. He is loyal and dedicated to our success. Because of this dedication we have included him as a partner in our cattle operation. You will soon see animals in the sale with his name as the breeder. We are grateful and blessed for his dedication.

Deep bodied, bold ribbed and feminine are words that I use to describe this daughter of BEAR. She is the first daughter of a very good Bruin cow that I believe will be one of our better cows down the road. 812 is a high volume female that gets better each day I look at her. People are finding out the BEAR daughters are the real deal. The Finks Pride line is outstanding for producing good ones. AI’d on 11/9/2019 to Basin Payweight Plus 6048. Lot 38 brings us another BEAR daughter that is about as stylish and pretty as any heifer in her class. To go along with this look comes performance and production. We have liked 818 from the day she was born and continue to admire her for the extremely feminine front end, wide spring of rib and overall broody look. Another BEAR daughter that is getting better each day I see her on the feed ground. She was raised by a 1st calf heifer who did a good job but 820 really took off over the summer when out on grass. Her EPD’s indicate she will be a female that has plenty of maternal qualities but adds the growth and carcass values that the industry is needing today to turn a profit. These are the kind of females that are going to keep everyone in the cattle business in the years to come. AI’d on 11/9/2019 to Basin Payweight Plus 6048. I was asked to Judge the Utah Angus sale last spring. I fell in love with this baby then and still like her. I thought I could bring her home and develop her for our sale. She has not disappointed me and I probably should be keeping her for our benefit. She is sired by the outstanding and popular VAR Legend 5019. A900 has a tremendous EPD profile for both maternal and terminal values. Take a good look at Valees for herd improvement. As a plus she is broke to lead and very gentile for a Junior to use as a fair project this summer and good enough to gather a banner. AI’d on 11/9/2019 to Basin Payweight Plus 6048. This set of Black Hereford females lights my fire for this young breed. They are powerfully bred with outstanding gentics introduced through their outstanding sire ICC BEAR 47C. This Margy bred heifer is extremely docile, feminine, broody and will be outstanding females to add power to your herd. 822 is chisel fronted, wide and deep thru her middle section with capacity to spare. When viewed from behind you see she is flat across her hips and wide in her pins. AI’d on 11/8/2019 to Jo CHBH JCR HIGH ROLLER 7D ET. Pasture exposed to ICC Billy Ray 639 11/20/2019 to 1/30/2020.

She is a front pasture donor prospect that will be a shaker and mover within the Black Hereford breed. She is thick but feminine, deep bodied with a great spring of ribs yet classy and lady like. Lady Abe has the ability to move this breed to the fore front. She brings in the desperatly needed fresh genetics to pull the Black Herefords Herefords in the right direction. Here is a 3/4 sister to the lot 41 heifer with all the power and substance that you would want in a Black Hereford female. Her dam has produced a lot of sale toppers for us over the years and 830 is following along that same path. Coming from two very sound and solid pedigrees in both the Hereford and Angus breeds this heifer is sure enough going to be a good addition to any program. This Dottie bred heifer is a sleeper. She has all the qualities of the other Black Hereford females in the sale but she packs a little more punch in the growth numbers. Her ET mother comes from arguabley one of the best Hereford cows in the breed. Dottie was used in the Split Butte program for years and we were lucky enough to have had the oppurtunity to bring her genetics into our herd with a flush we purchased. 832 will be a tic larger framed than the others so plug that in when making your decision if that will work in your environment. We are ending the sale with a pretty fancy commercial heifer. She is by far the youngest female in the sale but among the fanciest of them all. Sired by Bear and coming from one of our better young Hereford cows, if your serious about making money in the cattle industry here is a female that will put you on the fast track. 834 is backed by generations of cattle that have the improtant profitable traits, not to mention generations of high producing cattle. EPD Definitoins -----------------Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

--------------------------------------Docility (Doc), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Feedlot Value ($F), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and feed efficiency. Beef Value ($B), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat. Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calve Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace the 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-base carcass merit grid. CHB, The Certified Hereford Beef Index is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows and all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight to ensure profit on the rail. View video of each lot on auction site.
