Editor’s Notes

Harvesting Autumn’s Splendor

This issue we celebrate autumn and fall harvest. It is my favorite time of year. Football begins, colors paint the trees, and wonderful aromas and flavors fill this season.

It truly is something I look forward to every year, and cherish the time that I have with the season.

Our lives tend to be made up of hustle and bustle.

And that is ok. It means we are alive and giving of ourselves. But, what is equally important, is to stop and relish in the moments that fill our souls as well. Be present in the moment before it is gone.

I think of this often. As a business owner, mom, wife Kelsey Ruzicka and active person, I am constantly moving and constantly Publisher of working towards goals, project deadlines, and family The Country Register events. And, that is alright. That is actually how I like it; of ND, SD, WY, busy and full of adventures and memories. However, that MT & N. ID isn’t the speed most of us can go 100% of the time.

Slowing down and reminding myself to be present in the moments that bring joy are such cup fillers. And, we have to fill that cup too.

Fall does that for me. The trees are so eye catching and beautiful, you can’t help but breathe and take in the splendor that nature has provided. The crunch of the leaves is so loud sometimes, you can’t help but smile and think of possibly diving into a pile. The aroma of pumpkin spice or apple cider is so inviting, you can’t help but conjure fond memories of loved ones around the table.

As the year speeds by us, it is a way of saying, “Stop and enjoy this, before we start anew.”

So, I encourage you lovely readers to find the article on page 7. It is a great list of things you don’t want to miss this fall. We have a full issue devoted to fall activities.

Don’t forget to harvest those fall memories while you can.

A Cup of Tea with Lydia: Back to School with a Book Exchange Tea As I purged books from the bulging bookcase in my office, I considered what to do with them. Since autumn and back to school were approaching, I decided to host a book exchange tea—one where we could all share books we were willing to part with.

Bookish Guests I invited five bookish friends who love to read and write. These ladies knew each other somewhat through our writers’ organization, but now they could become better acquainted over tea. One also brought her granddaughter.

Setting the Scene for Bookworms

Lessons and Memories Books and life teach us many lessons. As I hosted this teatime, I learned: 1.

Things don’t have to be perfect for everyone to have a good time. For example, at the last minute, I couldn’t find the croissants, which were buried in my freezer, so I served the chicken salad plain.

2.

Accept help from others when needed. We enjoyed the foods others brought and helped prepare.

3.

Serve a simpler menu so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time with guests. Tea and scones or tea and dessert would be adequate.

4.

Tasty foods and a lovely ambiance are nice, but it’s the people who make the party. With the gracious guests who gathered, we had a wonderful party.

Just as writers set the scene for their readers, I set the scene for my book-loving friends with my décor.

Here are some comments I received afterwards.

“It was lovely to come and get to know other writers I didn’t know well. Everything was I borrowed a beautiful book-themed quilt from my friend Debbie and hung it in the very pretty and delicious! Thanks for including me!” entry of our home. Debbie designed and sewed this intricate quilt to include four rows of bookshelves filled with colorful books. A clock sat on one shelf, and other shelves “It was delightful to meet new bookish friends over a lovely tea party. Your ‘book’ menu for held a teapot and teacup, a potted plant, and cats. A perfect welcome for bookworms. each of us was so much fun!”

Blue table decorations complemented the theme along with books, fresh flowers, and a fabric teacup table runner. China cups and saucers, cloth napkins, and silverware added to the inviting ambiance.

And I would say, “Sipping once, sipping twice, sipping tea with friends is nice!”

A book exchange teatime would be fun for children or adults and could be served any time of year. Add your own ideas, and create a happy time to savor with family and friends.

A six-page booklet greeted each guest and listed the guests’ names and the three courses of food. The cover of the booklet said, “Once upon a Book Exchange Teatime” and “Oh, the places you’ll go with books and tea!” (Search online for directions to make a six-page booklet from one sheet of paper.)

Lydia E. Harris, who holds a master’s in home economics, has been writing this tea column for 20 years. No wonder her five grandkids call her “Grandma Tea.” She is the author of Preparing My Heart for Grandparenting and In the Kitchen with Grandma: Stirring Up Tasty Memories Together.

The first course featured scones with lemon curd and whipped cream, a cup of chilled strawberry soup, and kiwi peach herbal tea.

The second course included Meat Turnovers, Meat-eor Bites, and Curried Chicken Salad. My neighbor surprised me by bringing macaroni and cheese created from my new cookbook In the Kitchen with Grandma. This dish made a tas-TEA bonus. Another guest brought a colorful mixture of fresh raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries.

In keeping with the book theme, I included Peter Rabbit’s Carrot Patch and Hummus, another recipe from my cookbook. It’s easy to make, but I was behind schedule. So the mother-daughter duo that arrived first graciously prepared this recipe. You simply poke a hole in the wide end of a baby carrot and stick in a sprig of parsley to look like the carrot is growing. Then you plant the carrots in a bowl of hummus.

We also sipped Paris tea and Patriotic Punch made with red, white, and blue ice cubes.

For the third course, I offered several desserts decorated with gummy worms for the bookworms. The choices included slices of Lemon-Filled Shortcake, squares of homemade Oatmeal Cake, Rosy Red Rhubarb Dessert, and Peaches and Cream Cobbler from my cookbook. (See recipe.) We sipped loose tea from Kenya, which I prepared with Masala spices to make a delicious, spicy chai.

Book Fun While we ate, my neighbor Sara read Dot’s Snow Day, a children’s book she wrote and illustrated. After the teatime, guests mingled on the deck, browsing the donated books.

“Oh look, I got Lynnette’s book Not a Sparrow Falls,” Peggy said. “I haven’t read this one.”

Peggy’s granddaughter found a Seattle coloring book while Sylvia chose the Green Tea book. Afterwards, I donated leftover books to the Senior Center library for them to enjoy.

Your Guide to Fall Activities

Stop, smell and take in this month of autumn splendor. We have compiled a list of truly quintessential fall things to do with family and friends. There is sure to be many more items that could be on this list, so feel free to add your own memories!

1. Go to a Fall festival- No fall season is complete without going to a fall festival and enjoy-

ing the great food, vendors, and the music they have to offer. Loads of family fun, shopping and creative inspiration can be found in the best season to festival! Be sure to check out our regional list of Fall Festivals on page 4.

2. Make a pumpkin spice recipe- For many years, using pumpkin spice in different foods

or even drinks has become very popular. There are endless recipes using this amazing ingredient be sure to check out some unique recipes we found on page 6

3. Go wine tasting - Now this has to be one of the top favorite fall activities. Vineyards in

the fall are beautiful settings that feel like an oasis from the everyday bustle. Not just that, but harvest varieties in wine are available this time of year. You’ll see notes of pumpkin, cranberry and spice on your pallette when you vist. Grab the gals, and head out to a winery for a fun fall afternoon.

4. Make homemade chili- There’s always that one day in the fall that everyone wants to just curl up on the couch, and be warm. So why not make a batch of warm, homemade chili to help keep the chills away? The best part about chili is that the possibilities are endless. Try a new recipe or make a favorite. Pair it with cornbread or cinnamon rolls (depending on where you are from) and enjoy!

5. Create a DIY Halloween Costume-

6. Go to a football game- What is better than going to a football game on a Friday night, and

sitting under the lights? Nothing beats a night of football and Fall weather. Grab some goodies, your favorite sports team hoodie, a thermos of cider or coffee and catch a game in the stands.

7. Carve Pumpkins- Nothing beats a couple hours of spending time with your family carving

big orange pumpkins! Enjoy the laughs, gooey messes, and finished glow this fall. Definitely one you don’t want to miss. (This also goes great with other items on our list!)

8. Wrap yourself in your favorite sweater & read a book outside 9. Go to a farmer’s market 10. Have a canning party 11. Go Apple Picking

17. Roast pumpkin seeds- After you’ve carved your pumpkins (see item 7), you’ll have lots of

seeds! Pumpkin seeds are not only yummy, but they are good for you. They also take on flavor well, and lend to lots of flavor varieties. Great for experimenting.

Fall Flavors in the Field

Fall is a great time to be in Belle Fourche. There is so much to see and do. And, that is many thanks to the folks at the Belle Fourche Chamber.

You’ll find all your favorite fall activities, such as vendors at market days, farmer’s markets, pumpkin festival for family fun, and a haunted house for spooky experiences. But, one of the more unique events that is here in this town is, Fall Flavors in the Field.

The idea came when director, Gary Wood, and his wife took a trip to Prince Edward Island. The island is a beautiful island in the Atlantic off the coast of Nova Scotia. It is the setting for Anne of Green Gables.

They attended a fall culinary event, and that gave Gary the idea to do that here at the center of the nation.

Fall Flavors in the Field provides a wonderfully fall experience.

Experience beautiful sunset views, music and the flavors of autumn with is outdoor event. Enjoy dinner provided by Black Sheep Food Truck & Catering, and music provided by the Zamboni Brothers.

Located on the crest of Redwater Hill, the location provides a quintessential fall experience.

Fall is fast approaching and it is time to break out your fall dĂŠcor!! I love all the fall colors, there are so many options when it comes to home decorating. I love to paint but not everyone does, so here is an option to painting a wooden door sign.

You will Need:

Step Two Fold the pumpkin in half and cut two curved lines.

Step Four Step THREE Wooden sign of any shape or size, a paper pattern (I used a pumpkin that is cut off at the bottom),scissors, two different types of fabric (one for the pumpkin and one for the stem), artificial flowers, hot glue gun and glue, Mod podge and foam brush, twine or ribbon.

Step One Cut out the pumpkin and stem from your material using your paper pattern.

Hot glue your flowers to the sign. This is where you are creative and place them any way you want!! I used twine for a bow and glued it on also. You can use any ribbon or burlap!

Place the pieces on your wooden sign so they line up with the edge of the sign.

Using the foam brush apply the Mod Podge to the wrong side of the fabric and place it on the sign. It takes the Mod Podge some time to dry so you will be able to move the fabric strips around to get them in the right place. Let this dry for about 20 minutes.

After the fabric is dry, apply a coat of the Mod Podge all over the wooden sign. This will seal the fabric to the sign.

There you have a wooden sign for hanging without any painting!!

My Grandma’s Hands

I have my grandmother’s hands.

I know this from the way my fingers are thinning or my knuckles are growing slightly wider. I see it in how a couple of veins are already a bit pronounced. They meander as translucent lines through an ever-changing landscape.

When I was a little girl I would sit on my grandmother’s lap. As she held my hand, I fiddled with her own rivers of blue, wiggling them back and forth in skin whose elasticity was gradually easing. Then I would turn her wedding rings on her fingers.

They always traveled around and back again with the diamond often tucked inside her hand.

Her wedding band is a thin one of white gold. She used to trace her finger over it and tell me, “There were orange blossoms engraved here when we got married.”

Now the ring is gently smoothed from a life well lived.

In late August 2006 I eased those rings from where they had lived for almost 70 years. From her hospital bed she watched me slide them onto the same finger on my own hand. I wore her wedding rings for the next two weeks until she was in the earth beside the man who gave them to her. My grandfather had passed away eighteen years prior in 1988.

I called my grandmother “Huba.” It began when I was nine months old, and being a bit unconventional she never tried to mold me into calling her something more traditional. I have been told that my first semblence of a sentence emerged like this: “Huba, Huba Mommy me Mommy.” You can tell I was born a writer. Thankfully I have learned how to employ verbs and possessive pronouns in the ensuing decades. Amazing what a good editor can do.

I still see my grandmother’s hands with a game we used to play. I imagine it is something long used to keep a young child quiet and occupied. We alternated layers of each others’ hands and slowly moved whatever hand that was on the bottom to the top. We would do this over and over and faster and faster until all we were doing was fluttering our hands in the air. Then we would start all over again.

I see her hands mashing potatoes and setting dishes on the table. I watch them pick up a cup of tea. I visualize them taking care of her husband and her sister or for that matter, anyone who needed her.

Mostly, though, I can yet feel her hands crocheting. For it was through her needlework that her depth and breadth of her love truly flowed. She made doilies, blankets, place mats, and potholders. She crocheted covers for the extra toilet tissue. For my friends and I she crocheted miniature chairs whose base was an open tuna fish can, and she made twirling ribbons for our hair. She designed accessories for my doll house and fashioned doll clothes.

This autumn my own hands are busy crocheting and knitting gifts for my boyfriend’s grandchildren. I cannot remember a time when my workbasket has been so happily and tenderly full. Together Wayne and I have chosen projects, and he learned how to knit. As he says, “they will always remember Grampa knitted for them.”

Our hands are never fully our own. Within them is everyone who came before us and who helped to shape us. With each motion we share with our loved ones today, we blend the best of the past with beauty of the present.

In any collecting genre, there are always a limited number of extremely high-end pieces. In the decoy field, they are the over one-hundred-year-old birds and ducks that can be attributed to a specific carver. Some birds and ducks from noted contemporary carvers are also held in high regard.

That being said, no matter how much research we do, the best resource will always be an antique dealer who specializes in water fowl or a truly experienced collector.

They are the experts in the field.

We do the research to answer our questions and to improve our knowledge base. We are then able to provide more information on our tags such as: “1930s, Hand-Carved, Spoonbill Duck."

Please get out and visit a few antique shops this week. You will have a great time… and if your timing is right, you might even see a flock of duck decoys landing in a parking lot.
