Quilting Together Memories

Memories are a truly wonderful thing. They are what make up our lives really. The good ones provide the light and joy we require and crave for a fulfilling life. The sad ones remind us of the importance of time and loved ones. The bad ones teach us and guide our paths. Whether you are living one right now, or reflecting on past ones, all memories are important.

This issue is focused on quilting. And, I always see quilting as a tangible memory keeper. In the making of them, the material, and the giving of them. It is a beautiful way that society still has to pass on such memories.

Publisher of The days and the hours that are required to The Country Register putting the quilt together provide a treasure trove of ND, SD, WY, of memory making. Some ladies might get together MT & N. ID and quilt in groups. Offering days of laughter, chatter and friendship. Retreats even, where ladies spend a weekend together making quilts. You know there will be memories made on that trip. Some might be making a special one for a new little one’s arrival. All the time that is spent thinking of how cute it will be. What will they be like?

What will they look like? Will they have their momma’s eyes? What beautiful memories poured into a quilt for someone starting their journey in this world.

Some might be making a quilt for a silent auction or competition. All the creativity and thought that goes into that pattern and fabric selection is a great memory later for self-love and growth. There are so many other reasons a quilt might be made. Maybe to send off with a new college student, to send to a newly married couple, to send to a sickly patient awaiting treatment. I think of all the memories being made as the quilt is being stitched, and it is truly a beautiful thing.

The making of the quilt isn’t the only place memories are made. Some quilts even have tangible memories stitched right in. Whether it is old t-shirts from youth sports adventures, shirts a person picked up at various travel and vacation spots, grandpa and grandma’s old shirts made into a keepsake after their passing, or favorite blankets worn out turned new again as squares in a new quilt. A collection of memories put into a vessel that will take them farther.

Receiving the quilt creates memories too. Getting a quilt for your new baby, new college adventure, new journey as a couple or any other gift is a memorymaking event. Whenever you see that quilt or cozy up with it, you remember the person that gave it to you and why. What a great tool quilts can be to sustain memories and place them in our hearts.

After seeing first-hand what it can be like to slowly lose your memories, it is very clear what an important role they play in our lives and souls. I take them pretty seriously now. I love to find ways to keep them, document them and share them. You never know when they might disappear. And, they are such beautiful and precious things. The stitching of our lives.

May and June provide lots of great memory making moments. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and the start of summer! So let’s all get out and create memories. It is something you won’t regret.

Black Hills Quilt Show and Sale Coming in June Contact: Melissa Grote, melissa_grote@yahoo.com RAPID CITY – The Black Hills Quilters Guild is presenting the 45th Annual Black Hills Quilt Show and Sale June 6th,7th and 8th at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, SD. The show is held every June to showcase creations by guild members and other quilters around the region. Quilted work can be entered in both judged and non-judged categories. Art quilts, pillows, garments, wall hanging, bed quilts of all sizes and other items stitched with three layers are eligible. The fee for a judged entry is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 7th, 2019. Registration forms are available on the guild website at www.bhquilters.org.

Shopping and demonstrations will be a part of the show. New vendors, in addition to old favorites, will offer fabrics, embellishments, patterns, books and more.

Project Warmth, the charity outreach division of the quilters’ guild, will sell quilts of all sizes as well as smaller items, to raise money for its work. In the past year guild members have made more than 300 quilts annually for Rapid City Regional Hospital pediatrics, WAVI, Youth and Family Services, Black Hills Children’s Home, Passages, Veterans, Habitat for Humanity and fire victims. Special requests are considered.

Come sew with us during the show and have some fun sewing Project Warmth quilts by sewing 5-inch squares together. No experience needed.

Each year at the show a silent auction raises thousands of dollars for Hospice House of the Black Hills. The bidding sheets for the handmade little quilts and quilted objects as well as some unique hand-crafted items are put out on Friday with the bidding ending Saturday.

The Inspiration Studio (previously the Demo Room) will have classes, quilt displays and information for the Fall Retreat. We are currently working on classes and will have the information available at Guild Gatherings, on the website, and in the May/June newsletter. Some classes will require a kit to be purchased.

We are excited to have a new judge this year, Pamela Day Walsh from Golden, CO. Pamela is a retired Colorado dentist and Certified Quilt Judge through the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges. She attends and judges numerous national, state and local quilt shows annually. She is the Colorado Quilting Council Lead Quilt Judge and the past Chairperson of the Colorado Quilting Council Competition Committee.

Certified AQS appraiser, Jan Sears, will be available for written and verbal appraisals on old and new quilts. There is a fee for the appraisal. Drop-ins are welcome.

Quilt show hours are Sneak Preview Thursday night, June 6th from 5pm to 8pm, Friday June 7th from 9am to 6pm with a Cocktail party at 6:30pm (reservation required) and Saturday, June 8th from 9am to 4pm. Celebrating 30 Years of Publishing

by Barbara Floyd, Founder of The Country Register Deadlines!!! I seem to need them still. Here I am at final deadline time for this article. My good intentions were to have several articles ahead of time before January. I knew a good month or more in advance that on January 8th I would be having major fusion surgery on my lower back. It took months and almost seven years of pain to get to that conclusion and go through all the necessary hoops to arrive at this point.

It included picking a time when my daughters could leave their busy lives and become my caregivers for a month. I did not know my oldest sister’s health would pick the same time to spiral downwards. She had not been in her best of health for the last four years! The day after my surgery she turned 85 and the following week her journey here on earth ended as did her suffering from congestive heart failure. She will be greatly missed forever.

One of my comforters and supporters during this past month is Lydia Harris. Many of our readers will recognize her “A Cup of Tea with Lydia” articles. We actually met in Walla Walla, WA, along with Country Register publisher Glena Dunn of Nevada. Glena and I are often in Walla Walla at the same time as we both have family there.

One June, years ago, we met up with Lydia, who lives in Western Washington, and we enjoyed a delightful tea lunch at a local tea room that has since closed. Lydia has been writing a tea column for The Country Register for twenty years. That is a lot of columns and she amazes me.

The publishers get to choose their own writers and many have included Lydia’s column. Her five grandchildren call her “Grandma Tea” and, in this coming August, her new cookbook, In The Kitchen with Grandma: Stirring Up Tasty Memories Together, will release from Harvest House Publishers. I have appreciated Lydia’s friendship through these past twenty years and her welcome emails, often in the evening, just sending a “tea-lightful” note or sharing life’s experiences or a recipe or two. Sometimes her hand-written notes include some special tea bags, so I enjoyed a new flavor she sent when she heard about my sister. I drank it out of a cup my sister had given me in years past.

I can’t begin to tell you of all the many and varied writers who have contributed to the interesting and successful content in the papers over the years. I am so grateful to

them all! Many recipes have been shared. A number of writers are within the quilting circle. Marlene Oddie of Washington was living in Walla Walla when I first met her and her parents were living in the Phoenix area. Her articles, “KISSed Quilts,” appear in many of The Country Registers and she now lives and has her shop in Grand Coulee, WA. In looking at back issues of The Country Register of Arizona from 1991 through January 1992, I found local features, including many articles generated by our office, which then consisted of a part time graphics person and myself. There was no network of writers or publishers and there were still just the Arizona and Michigan papers.

We promoted lots of bed and breakfasts and often did feature articles on them as well as various local shops.

Goose collecting was exchanged for cows. It is interesting how trends cycle—certain styles of cows and other animals have been a big part of home décor over the years and the Farmhouse style is enjoying a surge in popularity.

Former country gift shops still exist but often with new twists on their names. It is my feeling that the vintage revival that has been going on for years has replaced many shops of the early ‘90s.

The two original newspapers are now part of a huge network with papers available in forty-two states, five provinces of Canada and at www.countryregister.com. The Publishers who bring you the papers—and I—hope you enjoy your 2019 Country Registers and that they help you find new shopping excursions and events, both at home and when you travel.

Barbara Floyd enjoys her downsized lifestyle in Phoenix, AZ, and her visits to see children, grandchildren and a great grandchild in Tri-Cities and Walla Walla, WA, Cumming, GA, and Ft. Wayne, IN. The Fine Art of Porch Sitting

At this time of year, a vital thing to do is porch sitting. If you don’t have a porch, a front or back step will do. Or a folding chair. As long as it is a place to pause and do absolutely nothing.

Though by doing nothing I actually mean doing something. Like watching the colors of vehicles as they pass by. Listening to kids bounce a basketball. Seeing someone jog by and knowing you should get up.

But you don’t. Because if you did, you would no longer be porch sitting. The philosophy is to be still and pay attention to the little things.

Albert Einstein wrote, “There are only two ways to look at your life…one is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is a miracle.” If you are porch sitting with the proper mindset, everything before you is a miracle. From a blade of grass to the tips of the trees, you feel the resilient life energy surrounding you. It recharges you in a way that you didn’t even know you needed.

To achieve this affirmation in porch sitting requires practice. Sometimes hours and sometimes lots of sweet tea.

Another point of porch sitting is to merely observe. For example, a gray-haired lady wearing turquoise walks by. You notice this, absorb it, and then release it as you shift your attention to whatever comes along next.

There are moments where you realize that the porch needs sweeping and weeds are sneaking into the petunias. But you do not get up. Not yet. You will get everything done that needs doing. However, right then, you are porch sitting.

I like to sip a coffee on the back step in the early morning. I watch the sun sliding up between the pine trees. I smile at the maple leaves glimmering like pale emeralds with the light behind them.

I hear the neighbor’s dog come out, and I watch him. He is a little black dog, who has extremely sensitive hearing. If I use the utensil drawer that squeals and he is outside, he barks.

Between you and me I have my own title for this dog. In college, I read Goethe’s Faust, wherein the main character makes a selfishly ill-guided pact with the devil. The character of the devil is named “Mephistopheles” and first appears as a little black dog. Ever since, every little black dog I see receives this name in my head.

I know. This likely isn’t normal. Yes, please pray for me. And if you have a little black dog, I apologize.

Anyway, the dog wanders, then my neighbor comes to the door and calls him. He cocks his head to one side, pauses, and then wanders a little more. The neighbor’s voice changes pitch, and the dog repeats this routine. This occurs about four times until my neighbor hits just the right tone, and the dog darts inside as if a genuine Mephistopheles is chasing him.

If I didn’t porch sit, I would miss that moment.

However, the most important part of porch sitting is to share it with those we cherish.

Generations of families and friends porch sat together, and it is only in more recent times that we have seemingly forgotten how.

You are more than welcome to porch sit with me. I’ll pour you a glass of sweet tea, and we’ll watch the world go by together.

Just promise not to tell my neighbor what I secretly call the dog.

A Little Piece of This & That

Since the beginning Mary Riley has always offered a variety. In 1996, she and her husband purchased an established office supply store in downtown Belle Fourche.

They immediately expanded the store size by moving to a bigger building downtown, and expanded inventory to include art supplies. Since then, she has continued to grow and expand the products and services she provides.

The name, Office Emporium, is perfect because she has a lot to offer. Her scope of products and services is exactly what you would expect in a small town.

Comprehensive and Eclectic. Offering a one-stop-shop for those in or visiting Belle Fourche. Customers can find a full array of paper, envelopes, pens, calculators and anything else to make an office function.

Her products are not the only thing that is diverse, but her services are too. She has the standard laminating, copying and printing services, but also provides custom photo framing, trophies and engraving, digital processing, home movies-photos and slides transferred to video and DVD, film processing, reprints, restorations and enlargements. She is a Western Union facility, FedEx shipping hub, and UPS shipping center. She is also a notary and provides legal form services.

In 2006, Mary expanded her art supply line further to include quilting. Her mother encouraged her to fill that need in the community as a resource for fabrics and notions. That is when she created, Gone To Pieces Quilt Shop, within her store.

Mary offers fabric, notions, quilting supplies, quilts for sale and provides fabric design services for customers. All of the fabric in the store is less than $10/yard, and there is a buy 5 get 1 free punch card offered year-round.

While at the shop customers can pick up gift items. Local pottery, milestone gits, South Dakota made products, inspirational journals, stationery and much more can be found in her gift section. Not only can you find a gift for the occasion, but decorations as well.

Patrons will also find an inviting coffee area with booth seating in the store.

Customers can chat and watch main street happenings. Coffee is available by donation. Each month a local non-profit is featured and the proceeds benefit them.

Mary has added even more diversity to her store in offering classes in quilting and greeting card design. She has a space created just for classes in the back of her store where various people from town offer classes to the area.

It is very clear that there is a lot to be found at Office Emporium and Gone to Pieces Quilt Shop. It is a definite stop when in town with a lot to explore and do in just one shop.

I am not a quilter but I love fabric!! I seem to buy the bundles of fat quarters because they are usually color coordinated with sets of 4 to 8 pieces in a bundle. Fat quarters are pieces of fabric cut into 18in. X 21in. pieces. They are so darn cute that I can’t resist them! Well If I am not using them for quilting then I have to come up with an idea for them which is not hard at all! Here is one idea!

You will Need:

side of the fabric. It really doesn’t matter which half you put the facing on. Hint: I cut my facing so there is about an eighth of an inch all the way around the piece. This makes sewing the seams easier.

Your material, some light weight fusible facing, ribbon, button, thread, art book (aprox. 4x6) for kids, crayons, a cutting mat and cutter or tape measure and scissors.

You will also need a sewing machine and an iron.

Step Five

Step One I chose to make my pak 5 ½ by 7 ½. This will accommodate a 4X6 notepad and 8 crayons.

You will need to cut two pieces of fabric. One to make the pockets on the inside and one for the outside cover. The outside cover piece will be 8 ¼ in. by 21in. I cut mine lengthwise because of the patterned material that I used. The inside pocket piece I cut 10in X11in.

of an eighth to a fourth inch. The next seam will be the middle of the pak at about 5 ¾ inches. (I folded my material in half and marked it). The next seam will be half way between the middle and the left side which is about 2 ¾ inches to left of the middle seam. The last is the left side seam. I again left an eighth to a fourth seam allowance.

Step THREE Fold the inside pocket piece in half so that the right side of the fabric is showing. Pin it to the right corner of the right side of the cover piece.

(NOT THE WRONG SIDE of the fabric) You will also want to pin on the ribbon closure. I used 5 ½ inches of ribbon. Fold the ribbon in half making the loop right side up on the inside pocket material. Please see the picture for this one!!

Fold the outside cover piece in half and line up the edges. This should be folded so the right side of the fabric is to the inside. You will then sew together the open edges EXCEPT at the bottom of the largest inside pocket. This will be where we turn the fabric right side out. Turn the pak right side out and press with an iron. You will want to turn in and press the open edge so when you sew the edging, you will sew it closed. We will then sew around the whole pak. I used an eighth of an inch seam allowance.

The last thing is to sew the button on the front cover. I put the paper pad and crayon in the pak and marked where I wanted the button to be. I then sewed on the button and WOW there is a very cute art travel pak for kids!!

Step Four Step Two I then cut the fusible facing to fit on half of the outside cover piece and the same for the inside pocket piece. Iron to fuse facing on the wrong

The youngest of nine children in my birth family, I also enjoyed making Mother’s and Father’s Days special for my parents. Now as a grandmother, I like to encourage my grandchildren to honor their parents, and I hope to encourage you to try a few fun ideas as well.

Honoring Mothers In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation that designated the second Sunday in May as a day to honor mothers. More than 100 years later, we still celebrate this special day. How can we honor the mothers in our lives? Here are a few TEA-riffic tips to do so.

Select a menu your mother (or a special woman you wish to honor) would enjoy.

When moms and grandmas were asked what they would like, they mentioned quiche. So how about serving brunch? The menu could include quiche or an egg dish; sweet bread, coffeecake, or my Favorite Bundt Cake (see recipe); individual cups of fresh fruit; sparkling cider; and hot tea.

Choose a theme and gifts that reflect your mother’s interests. My mother enjoyed gardening and hospitality. One year I bought her an indoor watering can and personalized it with tulip drawings and words of love. Another year I gave her a teapot with pink roses on it.

If you have grandchildren, encourage them to honor their moms. One year I invited my daughter’s two young sons over before Mother’s Day and helped them bake their mom’s favorite pineapple upside-down cake. My preschool grandson did a good job of putting the maraschino cherries in the center of the pineapple rings before he ran off to play.

Honoring Fathers In 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd founded Father’s Day. The first celebration that June was at a YMCA in Spokane, Washington. Sonora honored her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and a single parent who had raised her and her five siblings. But it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became a federal holiday.

What type of meal and theme would your dad enjoy? Maybe a picnic? If so, a deck, backyard, or park would make a fun and casual setting on a sunny day. My son and husband both like barbecued ribs, potato salad, baked beans, fresh fruit and veggie sides, and iced beverages. To keep tea in the theme, include bottled iced tea or make an easy-brew iced tea by steeping four teabags in a quart of cold water in the refrigerator for two or more hours. Serve the tea chilled with ice cubes. And if your dad likes sports, such as baseball, my “bundt” cake recipe would fit the theme.

When selecting a gift for Dad, think of his interests and tastes. Maybe he’d like a gift card to his favorite restaurant or tickets to attend a sporting event with you. My husband often took our young son to baseball games. Later our adult son would buy a bag of peanuts and take his dad to watch a Mariners’ game.

As young adults, our children made a magazine cover for their dad and framed it as a gift. Along with a handsome picture of Milt in a tux, it said “Father of the Year!” in large letters. What father wouldn’t enjoy that type of affirmation?

Another year they wrote things they liked about him on slips of paper. Then we put those slips inside balloons and made a bouquet of helium balloons. We used them to play a game we called, “You’re the Best Pop.” Milt had to sit or stomp on the balloons and pop them to find the messages inside. Noisy and fun!

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day offer great opportunities to stir up creativi-TEA and find ways to honor our parents. Also, the Old and New Testaments encourage us to do so and offer a blessed promise when we do! Ephesians 6:2–3 NIV says: “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.”

Quilting with Barbara By: Barbara Conquest A few weeks ago after struggling with a quilt that simply would not co-operate, a thought flashed through my mind: Why am I doing this? In fact, why would anyone quilt? Seriously. I began to consider the question. Seriously. Originally, making quilts from good scraps of worn-out clothing was an economic necessity for many households who could not afford to waste anything. This is rarely the case today, so why are there still so many quilters, young and old?

Upon reflection, I realized there are almost as many reasons for quilting as there are quilters. Every person, deep down and often well hidden, harbours a streak of creativity which may manifest itself in quilting, an activity which allows one to choose or originate patterns and to arrange colours. Many people, myself included, are fascinated by colour with its limitless permutations and combinations and its effect on emotion. Colour permeates our lives: restaurants choose their décor colours and lighting to influence their customers. Wearing certain colours, different for everyone, gives us a sense of wellbeing. Those of a “certain age” will remember the popular book Color Me Beautiful and its spinoffs.

Certain grandmothers, aunts and friends, although they have never quilted before, cannot resist making a quilt for a special baby. They may never make another one, but chances are that they’ll be hooked and will make more, possibly for subsequent family members or others. It’s possible that they will join countless others to broaden their group of recipients to include “charity” or “comfort quilts” for sick or needy children (think the 1,000,000 pillow case challenge) wounded veterans (Quilts of Valour), the homeless and disaster victims… and so many more.

Some of us want to leave quilts as legacies for future generations whose graduations, weddings and other rites of passage we will not be here to attend.

People who simply must follow trends often enter the quilting world in their quest to keep up with their friends. Inevitably some of them will leave, but more will stay until quilting is not a novel new craft, but a way of life.

To others the benefits of quilting are less tangible but no less important – companionship, common goals and social contact. Anyone who has ever belonged to a quilt guild can attest to the joy of sharing skills, information and time with other like-minded people. No matter how old one is, there is always something new to be learned, and that is an attraction for many. It has been said that to stop learning is to stop living.

And a talented and devoted few, competition quilters, create original projects that the rest of us can only admire from afar as they win some of the thousands of dollars in competition prize money available from many sources – from small local fairs to sponsored prizes of thousands of dollars from large companies and organizations. Prize money is a tangible reward, but it’s not hard to imagine that the resulting satisfaction and recognition are just as important to the winners as the money.

Mother’s Day Reflections By: Robin Snyder, DIY Blog - Robin’s Nest We will soon be observing the national day for Mother’s, the second Sunday of the month of May. It’s a time to remember that special woman that we call mother, grandmother, aunt, sister or a special friend. I know that I am thankful for all that my Mother has taught me. I am also thankful that she is still with me. She is 89 years young and still loves life.

I was trying to decide what to write about on the Mother’s Day theme so I was prompted to learn what started Mother’s Day. In 1872, a writer and women’s suffrage activist, Julia Ward Howe, wrote a Mother’s Day Proclamation. She asked women around the world to join together for world peace. She campaigned to have a national Mother’s Day. This was an unsuccessful attempt. On a side note here, she was the author of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and several other well known hymns. Anna Jarvis is said to have had the first Mother’s Day celebration when she sent white carnations to the St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia where she had a memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. Ann was a peace activist that had cared for soldiers during the American Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Her daughter Anna wanted to honor the work her Mother had done and wanted all Mothers to be recognized for the sacrifices they made not only for their children but for society. Anna Jarvis continued to campaign for a national recognition of Mothers “holiday”. Finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation for a Mother’s Day holiday on the second Sunday of May. It was not long before the commercial world jumped on the chance to profit from this holiday. Hallmark Cards was one of the first companies to print and sell Mother’s Day cards. Today there are over 139 million cards sold for this holiday alone. On this day about 25% of the nation’s annual flower sales are made.

It was rather interesting to me to find that Mother’s day was really prompted by women who were trying to improve their world, not just for being good mothers to their children. In fact Anna Jarvis was never married nor had any children. She was also critical of the way the Mother’s Day had become so commercial. She thought that the spirit of the holiday was misrepresented with all of the commercialism.

I will have to say that sometimes we tend to give gifts without giving of ourselves.

This is not what my Mom or I want. We want time and memories with our loved ones, not what gifts they can give us. At 89, my Mom has plenty of “stuff” but she loves to go to lunch with us or have coffee in the mornings. She likes family dinners (as long as she does not have to cook!) and visits from her great grand-children. I now treasure the same things as my Mom. The best Mother’s Day gifts are kisses from my loved ones!
