In all of America, there is only one Spearfish. Unique in its blend of history, beauty, small-town charm, and big city amenities, Spearfish is truly a micropolitan community. Over the last decade, Spearfish has experienced steady growth. People of all ages have been attracted to the community; not only for its beauty but also for the quality of life. Spearfish is a complete community offering excellent healthcare, high-quality education, friendly neighborhoods, and a low crime rate. The town is nestled at the mouth of scenic Spearfish Canyon in a beautiful valley of the world-famous Black Hills of South Dakota. The climate is surprisingly temperate allowing residents to recreate year-round. As foothills to the Rockies, the Black Hills enjoy periodic Chinook winds. Chinook is Lakota for “snoweater,” thus contributing to the area’s year-round moderate weather. Spearfish was first settled in 1876 during one of America’s gold rushes. By the turn of the century, it was one of the last places in the United States to see regular stagecoach

Chris Davis, Board of Director Chair 2020 My husband and I became familiar with the Black Hills through family vacations and hunting trips. Ready for a change from northern Minnesota, we purchased property outside of Spearfish in 2000, thinking it would be our retirement home. Fortunately for us, we were able to move here in 2007 through a job transfer for my husband. At that time, I was working for a non-profit which provided services in South Dakota and was able to move my home office. Two years later, I changed jobs through a connection I made through the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce. I was involved with the local chamber in Minnesota, and after moving to Spearfish, joining the Spearfish Chamber was one of my top priorities to meet people and get to know the area. I have now been associated with the chamber as an Ambassador for 13 years and a board member for four years. Now that my husband and I are retired, we are Associate Members, a nice option for those not associated with a business. Spearfish has a wide variety of organizations and activities that it is easy for residents to become involved in the community. As a university town, Black Hills State University also offers opportunities to Spearfish residents for sporting, arts, and educational events. Volunteering opportunities exist for people to enhance their interests or share their skills. I have served on the board of the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center and am a current clinic volunteer and board member of Good Shepherd Clinic and serve on the Grace Balloch Memorial Library Board of Trustees. I earned a Certificate in Guitar Performance and have since been able to share my music with others in a variety of settings. In Spearfish, we celebrate the four seasons with hiking, biking (all year long), water sports, outdoor markets, outdoor dining at wonderful restaurants, skiing, snowmobiling, climbing, camping, and much more. We appreciate our proximity to other western states with access to national parks and mountains. We are a small community with so many benefits. CLIMATE Perhaps one of the more subtle, yet pleasant, advantages to living in Spearfish is its climate. The climate is semi-arid with four distinct seasons. Residents boast that Spearfish is a year-round community with something for every season. July and August tend to be the warmest months in the region, with an average daily high temperature of 85° (low 62°), while January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average high temperature of 36° (low 15°). Average Summer Temperatures: 69.6 °F and a daily high of 81.1 °F. Average Annual Precipitation is 22 inches. March tends to be the month with the most snowfall with a little over 12 inches on average. Mild, sunny days are common throughout the winter and the occasional Chinook winds
delightfully surprise the residents throughout the region. Average Winter Temperatures: 31.9°F and a daily high of 42.6 °F. Average Annual Snowfall is 55.6 inches in town and 70 inches in the canyon. Chinook winds are a warm, dry wind that blows down the east side of the Rocky Mountains during the winter months. Due to a Chinook wind, Spearfish experienced the largest temperature change in the shortest amount of time: a 49° increase in just two minutes, then a 58° drop in only 27 minutes. January 22, 1943, at 7:30 a.m., the temperature was -4 °F. In those mere two minutes, the mercury rose to +45 °F. By 9:00 a.m. the gauge read 54 °F and then suddenly, the Chinook died down and 27 minutes later, the temperature was back to the original -4 °F.

Harvey Krautschun and his wife Joy started a New York Life business in 1976 in Spearfish providing pension and retirement plans before starting Financial Benefits Inc. in 1979.
Born and raised as a Spearfishian, Zac Eixenberger goes above and beyond for Spearfish when he sees a need to be filled.
Harvey served in the South Dakota Legislature for 12 years as a representative from District 31 and held the position of Speaker of the House his last term. He has served on the BHSU Foundation Board of Directors for many years, including time as president of the group. He has also served in other community leadership roles including Spearfish Lion’s Club, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the West River Estate Planning Council and more.
Not only does he own and operate three local businesses, he started a non-profit organization that has raised thousands of dollars for various organizations in our community. He is known as a spontaneous giver. Established in 2015, he gathered a team of friends and created a non-profit organization to raise funds and awareness for local groups and charities through music events. Since the inception of Spread the Tunes, they have raised thousands for dollars for organizations

Calvin and Dorcie Dardis did an amazing job creating a main street studio space with rustic modern ambiance for professional & personal meetings, classes, and special events.
Aleisha has been very active in the Spearfish community since moving here and currently sits on seven boards and/or committees.
The renovation process was long indeed, as most are. One of the goals of the renovation was to restore some of the original features of the building. These included the original tin ceilings and exposing the historic brick walls. Calvin and Dorcie personally took to preserving the tin for the ceiling and restoring the brick walls.
She holds the title of Lieutenant Governor for the Optimist Black Hills district and serves on the leadership team for the Spearfish Chapter. Aleisha is a leader on the Chamber’s ‘The Hook’ Young Professionals Organizing Committee and an active board member for The Booth Society at D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery. She is involved at the Countryside Church and serves as a Youth Leader and loves working with teenagers in any capacity.

MICROPOLITAN - Alexandra “Peedee” Hansen Alexandra “Peedee” Hansen began her dream of becoming an independent barista when she purchased her first transit van just one year ago. Peedee roves the streets of Spearfish and neighboring communities in her Blue Spruce Coffee Truck. She embodies positivity and joyfulness in all she does. Peedee uses locally sourced products to support her neighbor businesses, and a key piece of her business plan is charitable giving. Every quarter Peedee donates a portion of the business proceeds to a local cause.

Before the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, the area now known as Spearfish was used by Native Americans (primarily bands of Sioux but others also ranged through the area) who would spear fish (suckers, chubs, & dace) in the creek, hence the name of the creek and subsequently the town. Surveyed and staked out in 1876 and officially incorporated in 1888, the first residents of Spearfish gazed up at the ring of pine-clad hills and rocky bluffs that surrounded the community and noted how they looked like a crown. For this reason, they called their small agricultural settlement the “Queen City,” and it’s been thriving ever since. Spearfish’s first business opened in 1877 along with a United States Post Office, and the city soon evolved from a farming community (primarily to supply the notorious gold camp of Deadwood just 15 miles away) into a thriving academic and cultural center. Spearfish grew as a supplier of foodstuffs to the mining camps in the hills. Even today, a significant amount of truck farming or market gardening
still occurs in the vicinity. Before South Dakota had even gained statehood, the people of the Black Hills of Dakota Territory demonstrated a high regard for education and began advocating for a university in the Black Hills. Dakota Territorial Normal School was founded in 1883, now known as Black Hills State University. In 1938, Joseph Meier brought the Luenen Passion Play to settle permanently in Spearfish which became the Black Hills Passion Play, drawing thousands of visitors every year during the summer months. In 2008, after 70 years of summer performances, the Black Hills Passion Play was retired by Josef Meier’s daughter Johanna. Also in the 1930s, the Homestake Sawmill, now known as Spearfish Forest Products, was built to supply timbers for the Homestake Mine in Lead. The mine subsequently closed January 2002 and is now home to the Sanford Underground Research Facility. THOEN STONE In 1887, the accepted history
of gold mining in the Black Hills was thrown into question by the discovery of what has become known as the Thoen Stone. Discovered by Louis Thoen on the slopes of Lookout Mountain to the east of Spearfish, the stone portrays the last testament of Ezra Kind who, along with six others, entered the Black Hills in 1833 – over forty years before the legendary gold rush. Kind etched on the stone: Came to these hills in 1833 seven of us all ded but me Ezra Kind….killed by ind beyond the high hill….got our gold june 1834….got all the gold we could carry…our ponys all got by Indians….I hav lost my gun and nothing to eat…and Indians hunting me. There is a replica of the stone placed on a hill in Spearfish accessible through a short hike. When you reach the replica of the stone at the top of the hill, you can look across to Lookout Mountain and view a white “X” on the mountain. This is the area where the stone left by Ezra Kind was found. Years of research has been continued into the authenticity of this finding. leave areas farther east, like Chicago and St. Louis, and headed west in search of gold and their families never heard from them again. There is corroborating historical evidence for the Ezra Kind party. The actual engraved sandstone slab that was found can be seen at the Adams Museum in Deadwood, SD. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT Spearfish Canyon is rich in culture with the many notable footprints in the landscape. Trapper Hugh Glass, Lakota religious leader Black Elk, conservationist John Muir, bullwhacker Calamity Jane, President Teddy Roosevelt, George Belshaw and the Latchstring Inn, the Burlington Railroad, gold miner Potato Creek Johnny, and renowned organic architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank Lloyd Wright, a nationally renowned organic architect, visited Spearfish
Canyon in 1935. The rough, muddy, and chuck-holed roadway that remained for eighteen years was the remnants of the Burlington Railroad that was pulled out in 1934 after the devastating flood of 1933 near Iron Creek. Upon his return to his home in Wisconsin, he wrote an inspiring expose of his Canyon experience: But how is it that I’ve heard so little of this miracle and we, toward the Atlantic, have heard so much of the Grand Canyon when this is even more miraculous ... My hat is off to South Dakota treasures. Mr. Wright’s observations in 1935 were fully recognized with the designation of Spearfish Canyon as a State and National Scenic Byway in 1990. For a panoramic view of the inspiring Canyon landscape, a hike on the ‘76 Nature Trail to Buzzard’s Roost Overlook is a must.

NIGHTLIFE There is always plenty of live entertainment, theater productions, restaurants, bars, and pubs each with distinct personalities. A night out in Spearfish is truly what you make it. Many of the local restaurants feature local art, as well as local musicians. If you enjoy live theater, there are numerous options in the area with several here at home: from the local opera house community theater and live entertainment produc-

tions, to cowboy music and poetry at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, to theater productions, and professional recitals at the university. Catch the latest flick at the Northern Hills Cinema, work on your game at the local bowling alley, or simply catch up with friends at the local brewery or wine bars. During summer months, from the second Friday in June through Labor Day weekend, you can enjoy Downtown Friday Nights on Historic Main Street Spearfish and Spearfish Canyon Acoustic Series in the City Park during Wednesday nights in July. SHOPPING As a micropolitan community, Spearfish offers big-city shopping and services in a small town environment boasting over 40 unique specialty shops. Shopkeepers in Spearfish are well known for going the extra mile with friendly, personal service. Browse through inviting antique shops and gift stores, or examine the handiwork of area artists and crafters. Spearfish offers a surprising array of shopping choices from cozy boutiques and specialty shops to big box stores. Outdoor enthusiasts can stock up on sporting goods, climbing gear, and riding equipment. While just up the street, you can find scores of antiques. Rarely do you have a need or want that cannot be fulfilled by shopping local.

Recognized as one of the top “50 Sports Towns of America” by Sports Afield, Spearfish is an outdoor sports enthusiast’s dream. It’s a community that loves outdoor recreation, with ample opportunities for fishing, rafting, hiking, bicycling, boating, and more, all close to the population centers. Paved walking and biking trail systems are abundant throughout the community enabling residents of all ages to walk safely, bike, and enjoy the outdoors. National parks and forests, state parks, county parks, and city parks, as well as designated open space and open land areas, are found throughout the region and are treasured by residents. Situated on the edge of a 1.2 million-acre national forest, Spearfish provides endless opportunities for playing outside.
OUTDOOR RECREATION
BIKE PATH, PARK SYSTEM There are sixteen developed parks and “pocket” parks, 2 dog parks, and many sports field areas. Spearfish parks offer a little something for everyone. Kids love the Playland in the City Park, as well as all the other parks throughout town. Sports enthusiasts will delight in the baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, football fields, horseshoes, sand volleyball, a skate park, soccer fields, tetherball, and pickleball courts. Enjoy the 7.4-mile recreation path on foot or bicycle. The path runs alongside Spearfish Creek and winds in and out of several Spearfish parks. Bring fishing gear and find a spot along the Creek, which is home to rainbow, brook, and brown trout. GOLF Golfers can enjoy two 18-hole courses within the city limits, both with spectacular views. Or enjoy one of the 20 other golf courses in the Black Hills twisting through pine forests across rushing trout streams and opening up to mountain vista views. Disc golf is also an option with two courses right in town. SPORTS COMPLEX Local softball teams and soccer teams practice and play on many wellmaintained fields. A large local sports complex is host to city and regional events in baseball, softball, and soccer. It is also home to the new wood-bat collegiate baseball league, the Spearfish Sasquatch. From May-September, you will find the 2-acre outdoor pool full of residents and visitors alike. The water park includes slides, a lazy river, and other outdoor water features.
NATIONAL FOREST Both experienced and novice adventurers will find the limestone routes, cliffs, and craigs in Spearfish Canyon perfect for rock climbing at its best. The canyon and surrounding Black Hills are some of the nation’s most popular up-and-coming climbing destinations. The community is a mountain biking mecca with hundreds of miles of rocky single tracks and paved trails. Spearfish is also home to one of the largest mountain bike races, the Dakota Five O. Enjoy running versus riding? You can find a running/walking marathon just about every month in Spearfish, if not every weekend during the summer. Fishers can find their own personal paradise, whether it’s casting a line in Spearfish Creek or venturing to one of the Black Hills’ 14 mountain lakes. The area also contains some great birding habitats, including for the Great American Dipper. Spearfish also encourages a variety of hunting. Adjacent to town is a rifle range, an archery range, an eagle viewing area, and a multi-acre game production area that caters to turkey, deer, and a variety of wildlife. The game production area has open hunting with a section being archery only. Those interested in larger game will find premier hunting for wild turkey, elk, pheasant, deer, and even mountain lion in each direction of Spearfish. For those who prefer hunting rocks, the diverse caves throughout the Black Hills are a perfect playground. Within a few minutes drive of town is access to 350-miles of marked,
mapped, and groomed snowmobile trails that weave through the Black Hills National Forest. It is easy to find a three to four foot base of snow for winter fun, including some of the best cross-country ski trails and recreation areas for downhill skiing enthusiasts. There are also ample opportunities for ice climbing, downhill and Alpine skiing, snowshoeing, snow kayaking, and more! Looking for some off-road fun without the snow? Within minutes you can enjoy hundreds of miles of out-of-the-way back roads and trails for ATV’s, 4x4’s, extreme rock crawling, and single-track motorcycles during the warm months. Spearfish Canyon is a hiker’s paradise with numerous and easily accessible trails. You will also find pleasure in exploring the many U.S. Forest Service maintained trails in the Spearfish vicinity. Birding, geocaching, rock collecting, and horseback riding are all popular activities for the locals and visitors alike.

CULTURE ABOUNDS With a vibrant arts and cultural community, Spearfish is home to many artisans. From world-renowned to local talents, sculptors, potters, woodworkers, painters, photographers, jewelers, singers, songwriters, actors, and dancers all work to make Spearfish a hub for the visual and performing arts. Patrons of the arts support a variety of art venues including art galleries, studios, workshops, shows, and festivals. Throughout the year, there are many options to attend – or even participate in – live performances. Catch a play at the historic Matthews Opera House downtown, or enjoy live musical performances on their historic stage. Get on the campus of Black Hills State University for an intimate recital or a mainstage theatre production. On any given weekend, performers gather in local pubs and eateries to entertain guests with music. Visual arts also abound in this community. Along with art galleries, festivals, and markets, artisans display their work in many restaurants, public buildings, and many spaces throughout the community. BIG LURE OF ATTRACTIONS The community is rich in quality, family-friendly attractions. From one end of town to the other, Spearfish offers history, entertainment, education, and experiences that enrich lives.
Find out how cattle were driven to this area from the southwest, listen to the poignant prose of a cowboy poet, enjoy a variety of western shows in the large theater, or maybe even indulge in a chuckwagon dinner at the High Plains Western Heritage Center. Learn about the fisheries culture and view thousands of trout at the D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery and Archives. An official name for an official property, this hatchery is home to hundreds of thousands U.S. Fish & Wildlife artifacts. Open year-round, it really comes alive in the summer months with the gift shop, museum, railcar, and historic home available to the public. And head over to the Termesphere Gallery for a close up look at the works of an internationally renowned artist. Termespheres capture the up, down, and all-around visual world from one revolving point in space in a six-point perspective.

LIFELONG LEARNING Community Education of the Black Hills recognizes the benefits of engaging in learning opportunities at every stage of life. BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY Black Hills State University is a masters-level state university with 3,858 students. The campus leads the region in sustainability efforts and maintains top academic programs in business (AACSB accredited), exercise science, natural sciences, social sciences, the arts (BFA), mass communication, health sciences, and education. A second location, BHSU-RC, serves students in Rapid City, the state’s second-largest city. GET OUT & PLAY Spearfish has been called “naturally inviting” and that term can be attached to the area’s outlook on health and wellness. Indoor activities found throughout Spearfish enhance the body by aerobic exercise, body sculpting, and endurance. Those include weight-lifting, strengthbuilding, martial arts, swimming, track, tennis, soccer, basketball, yoga, pilates, dance, spinning, and more. Spearfish is a renowned mecca for a variety of outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, tubing, skiing, mountain biking, swimming, and running. FEATURED FOOD In terms of a healthy diet, the roots of Spearfish run deep. When the town was formed, it served as the agrarian community for the northern Black Hills, supplying produce to Deadwood, Lead, and Belle Fourche. The “lower valley” area on the northwest side of town still produces organic and locally grown produce, which can be purchased at roadside stands and markets or sampled at many local restaurants. It is an alternative for parents who do not live on an official school bus route allowing them to stay at work and know their
children are safely getting where they need to go. And for those without a vehicle, it allows them to get to work, school, or appointments at an affordable rate. Dakota Trailways is a thirdgeneration, family-owned business that offers a fullservice fleet of luxury coaches, minibusses, and school buses. They have been serving the Spearfish community since 1957, partnering with the Spearfish School System and managing the transportation for the ever-growing student population.
AIR TRAVEL Black Hills Airport - Clyde Ice Field was dedicated in 1934 to the towns of Deadwood, Lead, and Spearfish. The airport is located 4 miles from downtown Spearfish and adjacent to Interstate 90. Spearfish is fortunate to be the home to the largest and fastest-growing general airport in South Dakota. Offering more services and opportunities than any other general airport in the state, the airport caters to corporate air travelers. In 2016, jurisdiction for the airport moved from Lawrence County to the City of Spearfish.

WORSHIP Citizens who choose to worship in a church community can find traditional liturgy as well as contemporary, spontaneous worship. Spearfish is home to over 30 different houses of worship that represent most major denominations and include numerous independent congregations. Area residents and visitors have ample opportunities to strengthen their faith through worship services, Sunday school, Bible study groups, choir, musical outreach, and many other fellowship activities. Spearfish Canyon is beauty unique to each season. Fall dazzles with great colors when the aspen and birch turn golden yellow and the oak and sumac flame shades of red. The Canyon is equally awe-inspiring in winter when heavy, wet snow piles up on the tree branches and canyon ridges. In springtime, the canyon renews itself becoming fresh and alive all over again. It is a favorite time for hikers, fishers, nature lovers, and photographers of all ages. Summer brings sightseers, picnickers, and bird watchers. WATERFALLS ARE A MUST Bridal Veil Falls can be seen right from the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. An observation deck located on the east side of the road provides a place to admire the falls and ample photo opportunities.

Visitors are encouraged to park at the Latchstring Inn Restaurant, located at Savoy, to access the trailhead. A short hike on Little Spearfish Trail leads to this fall. This is the perfect location to enjoy the song of the American Dipper. RECREATION Spearfish Canyon is a hikers and biker’s dream, with several marked Black Hills National Forest trails, as well as many unmarked local favorites. The topnotch limestone walls in the canyon are a haven for rock climbers showcasing classic pocket climbing. Whether you explore the canyon via motor power or
manpower, it is an excellent place to enjoy a picnic in an organized picnic area or a spot off the beaten path. FALL BEAUTY When the colors change, the adventure and beauty heightens in Spearfish. Every September and October visitors from around the world come to experience the fall splendor of the Spearfish Canyon. On average, the colors begin to change in mid-September and peak the first week of October. Every year is different; so, give us a call for the local leaf forecast. CANYON BEGINNINGS Spearfish Canyon is twelvetimes older than the Grand Canyon. The canyon’s rich vegetation wears the
mantle of being the most magnificent canyon in the west. Scientists have determined that Spearfish Canyon was formed 30 to 60 million years ago. As a great sea’s waters subsided it caused erosion of the softer rocks and volcanic action pushed from underneath; the combination created the canyon. It’s easy to see why this wonder of nature is a geologist’s paradise. The high canyon walls and deep canyon floor are composed of sandstone, shale, and dominantly limestone deposited in ancient oceans. The first commercial transportation through Spearfish Canyon was by train in 1893. When a flood-damaged the rail line in 1933, the track was

GEOLOGY OF AREA Traveling through the canyon, three main layers of rock are distinctly visible. The highest peaks, typically the thickest part (up to 300 to 600 feet thick) are the Paha Sapa Limestone. It’s usually beige or tan with weathered gray areas, and it’s in this section of rock where people find the most fossils. The next level down is the Englewood Limestone, which can range from 30 to 60 feet thick. Englewood Limestone is quite often
mauve, pink, or even red. The bottom layer is known as Deadwood Sandstone is normally a brown color and may appear to have different levels or layers. The Deadwood Sandstone layers can be 400 feet thick. Spearfish Creek, which flows south to north and freezes from the bottom up, is an angler’s dream. Designated as a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, you can find someone fishing nearly year-round throughout the Canyon. The canyon teems with wildlife including whitetail and mule deer, chipmunks, mountain goats, an occasional mountain lion, and many other critters.
