Perhaps one of the more subtle, yet pleasant, advantages to living in Spearfish is its climate. The climate is semi-arid with four distinct seasons. Residents boast that Spearfish is a year-round community with something for every season. July and August tend to be the warmest months in the region, with an average daily high temperature of 85° (low 62°), while January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average high temperature of 36° (low 15°). Average Summer Temperatures: 65.1 °F and a daily high of 78 °F. Average Annual Precipitation is 22 inches. March tends to be the month with the most snowfall with a little over 12 inches on average. Mild, sunny days are common throughout the winter and the occasional Chinook winds delightfully surprise the residents throughout the region. Average Winter Temperatures: 29 °F and a daily high of 40 °F. Average Annual Snowfall is 40 inches in town and 70 inches in the canyon.

Chinook winds are a warm, dry wind that blows down the east side of the Rocky Mountains during the winter months. Due to a Chinook wind, Spearfish experienced the largest temperature change in the shortest amount of time: a 49° increase in just two minutes, then a 58° drop in only 27 minutes. January 22, 1943, at 7:30 a.m., the temperature was -4 °F. In those mere two minutes, the mercury rose to +45 °F. By 9:00 a.m. the gauge read 54 °F and then suddenly, the Chinook died down and 27 minutes later, the temperature was back to the original -4 °F.

For the past 100 years, the Chamber has played a role in many of the attributes that make Spearfish and the region such an amazing place to live, work, and play. This momentous occasion celebrates over 10 decades of significant milestones that the Spearfish Chamber has reached and established since its founding.
Commerce was formed in 1919 by a group of local business leaders who wanted to work together for the betterment of the community. It was then that they established an organization that would promote Spearfish, help the businesses work and grow together, serve as the front door to the community, as well as be a mechanism to meet future needs.

In 2019, the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated their 100th year business excellence at the Annual Banquet & Awards. Annually the board of directors requests nominations from the membership and the public for multiple awards representing both business and community.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
Vic Uttke moved to Spearfish in May of 1994 and quickly called Spearfish home. He joined the Chamber in January of 1995, and he and the Landmark Realty office have been continuous members since that time. Over the years, Uttke and his team have made a huge impact on the quality of life in Spearfish through may ventures and developments. He has made many contributions both economically and visually to Spearfish. He continues to have a vision for what “could be” to make Spearfish better, and to provide a bright future for generations to come. Uttke’s daughters’ Kelly Klein & Vicki Furnish accepted his award.
MICROPOLITAN AWARD
The first High Mountain Outfitters store opened in June of 2016 in Lead. Spearfish Creek Fly Shop was added after that first store moved from Lead to Spearfish in July of 2017. Then in November of 2018 the store moved to its current location on Jackson Blvd. tripling in size. Justin Stephens then opened High Mountain Climbing Gym in Spearfish in May of 2018. In addition to the Spearfish store and climbing gym, Stephens owns and operates 6 other stores and 2 climbing gyms in the Black Hills and Medora, ND.

Each year we receive nominations for more recipients than we have awards. What an amazing testament for the community we call home.
One of the most respected community leaders in Spearfish, the Black Hills region, and the State of South Dakota, Priscilla Romkema has touched hundreds of individuals and organizations. She is a wonderful spokesperson, a public personality, and lives with the passion that embodies Spearfish. Romkema loves her community, has dedicated much of her life to the betterment of others through education, has been and continues to be engaged with numerous local organizations.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL
Andrea Bakeberg is the Assistant Director for the South Dakota Center of Enterprise Opportunity, the only women’s business center in South Dakota. She is also president of the Matthews Opera House board of directors, past secretary of Zonta Club of Spearfish and a member of Toastmasters. Bakeberg stands out as a young professional worthy of recognition. She is very community-minded, involved in and cares about Spearfish.

The Plaza on Jackson & Main is one of newest additions to downtown. Main Street Plaza was once on the corner of Jackson & Main. Then in 2013, Winter Storm Atlas took a major toll on the plaza. In July of 2014, Ryan Worderman, along with partners Mike and Kim Albertson, purchased Main Street Plaza. Finally in January 2017, construction on the new plaza began. The space boasts 24,000 square feet and is home to four businesses, three of which are new to Spearfish.

ONCE UPON A Prior to the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, the area now known as Spearfish was used by Native Americans (primarily bands of Sioux but others also ranged through the area) who would spear fish in the creek, hence the name of the creek and subsequently the town. Surveyed and staked out in 1876 and officially incorporated in 1888, the first residents of Spearfish gazed up at the ring of pine-clad hills and rocky bluffs that surrounded the community and noted how they looked like a crown. For this reason they called their small agricultural settlement the “Queen City,” and it’s been thriving ever since. Spearfish’s first business opened in 1877 along with a United States Post Office,

and the city soon evolved from a farming community (primarily to supply the notorious gold camp of Deadwood just 15 miles away) into a thriving academic and cultural center. Spearfish grew as a supplier of foodstuffs to the mining camps in the hills. Even today, a significant amount of truck farming or market gardening still occurs in the vicinity. Before South Dakota had even gained statehood, the people of
the Black Hills of Dakota Territory demonstrated a high regard for education and began advocating for a university in the Black Hills. Dakota Territorial Normal School was founded in 1883, now known as Black Hills State University. In 1938, Joseph Meier brought the Luenen Passion Play to settle permanently in Spearfish which became the Black Hills Passion Play, drawing thousands of visitors every year during the summer months. In 2008, after 70 years of summer performances, the Black Hills Passion Play was retired by Josef Meier’s daughter Johanna. Also in the 1930s, the Homestake Sawmill, now known as Spearfish Forest Products, was built to supply timbers for the Homestake Mine in Lead. The mine subsequently
closed January 2002 and is now home to the Sanford Underground Research Facility.
THOEN STONE In 1887, the accepted history of gold mining in the Black Hills was thrown into question by the discovery of what has become known as the Thoen Stone. Discovered by Louis Thoen on the slopes of Lookout Mountain to the east of Spearfish, the stone portrays the last testament of Ezra Kind who, along with six others, entered the Black Hills in 1833 – over forty years before the legendary gold rush. Kind etched on the stone: Came to these hills in 1833 seven of us all ded but me Ezra Kind….killed by ind beyond the high hill….got our gold june 1834….got all the gold we could carry…our ponys all got by Indians….I hav lost my gun and nothing to eat…and Indians hunting me. There is a replica of the stone placed on a hill in Spearfish accessible through a short hike. When you reach the replica of the stone at the top of the hill, you can look
across to Lookout Mountain and view a white “X” on the mountain. This is the area where the stone left by Ezra Kind was found. Years of research has been continued into the authenticity of this finding. Many of the men listed on the stone did indeed leave areas farther east, like Chicago and St. Louis, and headed west in search of gold and their families never heard from them again. There is corroborating historical evidence for the Ezra Kind party. The actual engraved sandstone slab that was found can be seen at the Adams Museum in Deadwood, SD.
FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT Spearfish Canyon is rich in culture with the many notable footprints in the landscape. Trapper Hugh Glass, Lakota religious leader Black Elk, conservationist John Muir, bullwhacker Calamity Jane, President Teddy Roosevelt, George Belshaw and the Latchstring Inn, the Burlington Railroad, gold miner Potato Creek Johnny, and renowned organic architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank Lloyd Wright, a nationally renowned organic architect, visited Spearfish Canyon in 1935. The rough, muddy, and chuck-holed roadway that remained for eighteen years was the remnants of the Burlington Railroad that was pulled out in 1934 after the devastating flood of 1933 near Iron Creek. Upon his return to his home in Wisconsin, he wrote an inspiring expose of his Canyon experience: But how is it that I’ve heard so little of this miracle and we, toward the Atlantic, have heard so much of the Grand Canyon when this is even more miraculous ... My hat is off to South Dakota treasures. Mr. Wright’s observations in 1935 were fully recognized with the designation of Spearfish Canyon as a State and National Scenic Byway in 1990. For a panoramic view of the inspiring Canyon landscape, a hike on the ‘76 Nature Trail to Buzzard’s Roost Overlook is a must.

BIKE PATH, PARK SYSTEM
There are sixteen developed parks and “pocket” parks, 2 dog parks, and many sports field areas. Spearfish parks offer a little something for everyone. Kids love the Playland in the City Park, as well
as all the other parks throughout town. Sports enthusiasts will delight in the baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, football fields, horseshoes, sand volleyball, a skate park, soccer fields, tetherball, and tennis courts. Enjoy the 7.4-mile recreation path on foot or bicycle. The path runs alongside Spearfish Creek and winds in and out of a number of Spearfish parks. Bring fishing gear and find a spot along the Creek which is home to rainbow, brook, and brown trout.

GOLF Golfers can enjoy two 18-hole courses within the city limits, both with spectacular views. Or enjoy one of the 20 other golf courses in the Black Hills twisting through pine forests across rushing trout streams and opening up to mountain vista views. Disc golf is also an option with two courses right in town.
SPORTS COMPLEX Local softball teams and soccer teams practice and play on many well-maintained fields. A large local sports complex is host to city and regional events in baseball, softball, and soccer. It is also home to the new wood-bat collegiate baseball league, the Spearfish Sasquatch. From May-September, you will find the 2-acre outdoor pool full of residents and visitors alike. The water park includes slides, a lazy river, and other outdoor water features.
NATIONAL FOREST Both experienced and novice adventurers will find the limestone
routes, cliffs, and craigs in Spearfish Canyon perfect for rock climbing at its best. The canyon and surrounding Black Hills are some of the nation’s most popular up-and-coming climbing destinations. The community is a mountain biking mecca with hundreds of miles of rocky single tracks and paved trails. Spearfish is also home to one of the largest mountain bike races, the Dakota Five O. Enjoy running versus riding? You can find a running/walking marathon just about every month in Spearfish, if not every weekend during the summer. Fishers can find their own personal paradise, whether it’s casting a line in Spearfish Creek or venturing to one of the Black Hills’ 14 mountain lakes. The area also contains some great birding habitats, including for the Great American Dipper. Spearfish also encourages a variety of hunting. Adjacent to town is a rifle range, an archery range, an eagle viewing area, and a multi-acre game production area that caters to turkey, deer and a variety of wildlife. The game production area has open hunting
with part being archery only. Those interested in larger game will find premier hunting for wild turkey, elk, pheasant, deer, and even mountain lion in each direction of Spearfish. For those who prefer hunting rocks, the diverse caves throughout the Black Hills are a perfect playground. Within a few minutes drive of town is access to 350-miles of marked, mapped, and groomed snowmobile trails that weave through the Black Hills National Forest. It is easy to find a three to four foot base of snow for winter fun, including some of the best cross-country ski trails and recreation areas for downhill skiing enthusiasts. There are also ample opportunities for ice climbing, downhill and Alpine skiing, snowshoeing, snow kayaking, and more! Looking for some off-road fun without the snow? Within minutes you can enjoy hundreds of miles of outof-the-way back roads and trails for ATV’s, 4x4’s, extreme rock crawling, and single track motorcycles during the warm months. Spearfish Canyon is a hiker’s paradise with numerous and easily accessible trails. You will also find pleasure in exploring the many U.S. Forest Service maintained trails in the Spearfish vicinity. Birding, geocaching, rock collecting, and horseback riding are all popular activities for the locals and visitors alike.

Spearfish Canyon has a beauty unique to each season. Fall dazzles with great colors when the aspen and birch turn golden yellow and the oak and sumac flame shades of red. The Canyon is equally awe-inspiring in winter when heavy, wet snow piles up on the tree branches and canyon ridges. In springtime, the canyon renews itself becoming fresh and alive all over again. It is a favorite time for hikers, fishers, nature lovers and photographers of all ages. Summer brings sightseers, picnickers, and bird watchers.
WATERFALLS ARE A MUST Bridal Veil Falls can be seen right from the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. An observation deck located on the east side of the road provides a place to admire the falls and ample photo opportunities. The Roughlock Falls Nature Area is located in Spearfish Canyon near Savoy. Just one mile from the Scenic Byway, a short detour takes you to one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills.
Spearfish Falls is the most often missed of the three waterfalls. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Latchstring Inn Restaurant, located at Savoy, to access the trailhead. A short hike on Little Spearfish Trail leads to this falls.
RECREATION Spearfish Canyon is a hikers and bikers dream, with several marked Black Hills National Forest trails, as well as many unmarked local favorites. The topnotch limestone walls in the canyon are a haven for rock climbers showcasing classic pocket climbing. Whether you explore the canyon via motor power or manpower, it is an excellent place to enjoy a picnic in an organized picnic area or a spot off the beaten path.
FALL BEAUTY When the colors change, the adventure and beauty heightens in Spearfish. Every September and October visitors from around the world come to experience the fall splendor of the Spearfish
Canyon. On average, the colors begin to change in mid-September and peak the first week of October. Every year is different; so, give us a call for the local leaf forecast.
CANYON BEGINNINGS Spearfish Canyon is twelve-times older than the Grand Canyon. The canyon’s rich vegetation wears the mantle of being the most magnificent canyon in the west. Scientists have determined that Spearfish Canyon was formed 30 to 60 million years ago. As a great sea’s waters subsided it caused erosion of the softer rocks and volcanic action pushed from underneath; the combination created the canyon. It’s easy to see why this wonder of nature is a geologist’s paradise. The high canyon walls and deep canyon floor are composed of sandstone, shale, and dominantly limestone deposited in ancient oceans. The first commercial transportation through Spearfish Canyon was by train

in 1893. When a flood damaged the rail line in 1933, the track was abandoned. Eventually, a road was laid directly on the old railway bed. Later, U.S. Highway 14A was constructed.
GEOLOGY OF AREA Traveling through the canyon, three main layers of rock are distinctly visible. The highest peaks, typically the thickest part (up to 300 to 600 feet thick) are the Paha Sapa Limestone. It’s usually beige or tan with weathered gray areas, and it’s in this section of rock where people find the most fossils. The next level down is the Englewood Limestone, which can range from 30 to 60 feet thick. Englewood Limestone is quite often mauve, pink, or even red. The bottom layer is known as Deadwood Sandstone is normally a brown color and may appear to have different levels or layers. The Deadwood Sandstone layers can be 400 feet thick. Spearfish Creek, which flows south to north and freezes from the bottom up, is an angler’s dream. Designated as a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, you can find someone fishing nearly year-round throughout the Canyon. The canyon teems with wildlife including whitetail and mule deer, chipmunks, mountain goats, an occasional mountain lion, and many other critters.

Quality education is a cornerstone of the Spearfish community. Since the settling of the town, citizens have placed a high emphasis on education, as witnessed by the founding of the Black Hills Normal School just a few years after the first homesteaders arrived. K-12 SCHOOL DISTRICT The Spearfish School District serves over 2,300 students from the Spearfish community and surrounding area. The district is a positive, productive institution with a history of high expectations and student success. Its staff is experienced, talented, and dedicated to student achievement. steadily for several decades, so has the enrollment in the public school system with a 20% increase over the past ten years.
The Spearfish School Board takes great pride in providing the students with the tools they need to succeed. This success solidly shows through above national average ACT scores and a 98% graduation rate.

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION OPTIONS Private Christian-based education is also a viable option in Spearfish with three parochial schools with all grade levels available. Homeschooling is an accepted practice by the state department of education with an active network of parent support within the community.
BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY
Along with sport champions, BHSU has a long legacy of champion rodeo teams.
Black Hills State University is a masters-level state university with over 4,000 students. The campus leads the region in sustainability efforts and maintains top academic programs in business (AACSB), exercise science, natural sciences, social sciences, the arts (BFA), mass communication, health sciences, and education.
BHSU students, faculty, and staff are actively involved in the community recording over 10,000 hours of service each year. Area residents also benefit from the multitude of cultural events, lifelong learning opportunities, conferences, camps, and sporting events offered at the University.
A second location, BHSU-RC, was recently established in Rapid City, the state’s second largest city.

GET OUT & PLAY Spearfish has been called “naturally inviting” and that term can be attached to the area’s outlook on health and wellness. Indoor activities found throughout Spearfish enhance the body by aerobic exercise,
body sculpting, and endurance. Those include weight-lifting, strength-building, martial arts, swimming, track, tennis, soccer, basketball, yoga, pilates, dance, spinning, and more. FEATURED FOOD In terms of a healthy diet, the roots of Spearfish run deep. When the town was formed, it served as the agrarian community for the northern Black Hills, supplying produce to Deadwood, Lead, and Belle Fourche. The “lower valley” area on the northwest side of town still produces organic and locally grown produce, which can be purchased at roadside stands and markets or sampled at many local restaurants.

Spearfish is home to over 30 different houses of worship that represent most major denominations and include numerous independent congregations. Area residents and visitors have ample opportunities to strengthen their faith through worship services, Sunday school, Bible study groups, choir, musical outreach, and many other fellowship activities. BUS SYSTEM Prairie Hills Transit offers access to affordable public transportation, helping to foster the independence of our elderly residents, assisting them in keeping medical appointments and getting to the grocery store. It is an alternative for parents who do not live on an official school bus route allowing them to stay at work and know their children are safely getting where they need to go. And for those without a vehicle, it allows them to get to work, school, or appointments at an affordable rate.
Dakota Trailways is a third-generation, family-owned business that offers a full-service fleet of luxury coaches, minibusses, and school buses. They have been serving the Spearfish community since 1957, partnering with the Spearfish School System and managing the transportation for the ever-growing student population.
AIR TRAVEL Black Hills Clyde Ice Field was dedicated in 1934 to the towns of Deadwood, Lead, and Spearfish. The airport is located 4 miles from downtown Spearfish and adjacent to Interstate 90. Spearfish is fortunate to be the home to the largest and fastest growing general airport in South Dakota. Offering more services and opportunities than any other general airport in the state, the airport caters to corporate air travelers. In 2016, jurisdiction for the airport moved from Lawrence County to the City of Spearfish.
