Spearfish was first settled in 1876 during one of America’s gold rushes. By the turn of the century, it was one of the last places in the United States to see regular stagecoach service while being one of the first cities in South Dakota to welcome aviation. Today, Spearfish continues to savor its past while embracing the future. Located halfway between Seattle and Chicago, on the Interstate-90 corridor, it’s a community that is continually advancing in business and growth. Many people

We’re celebrating 100 years! We have traced backwards in time and determined the first Spearfish Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet was held in 1919. The oldest list of board of directors we have is dated 1938 with Otto Ully as President. On June 16, 1967, Gary Richards, Blayne Pummel, and James Voorhees as the Chamber leadership team officially incorporated the organization with the State of South Dakota. Perhaps one of the more subtle, yet pleasant, advantages to living in Spearfish is its climate. The climate is semi-arid with four distinct seasons. Residents boast that Spearfish is a yearround community with something for every season. July and August tend to be the warmest months in the region, with an average daily high temperature of 85° (low 62°), while January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average high temperature of 36° (low 15°). Average Summer Temperatures: 65.1 °F and daily high of 78 °F. Average Annual Precipitation is 22 inches. March tends to be the month with the most snowfall with a little over 12 inches on average. Mild, sunny days are common throughout the winter and the occasional Chinook winds delightfully surprise the residents throughout the region. Average Winter Temperatures: 29 °F and a daily high of 40 °F. Average Annual Snowfall is 40 inches in town and 70 inches in the canyon. Chinook winds are a warm, dry wind that blows down the east side of the Rocky Mountains during the winter months. Due to a Chinook wind, Spearfish experienced the largest temperature change in the shortest amount of time: a 49° raise in just two minutes, then a 58° drop in only 27 minutes.

PRESIDENT

The first time I ventured to Spearfish was in fall of 1996. I was considering attending Black Hills State University, and I remember the car ride here. As we got closer to town, the natural beauty of the hills and smell of the pine trees was plentiful. I already knew my decision was made. During my time at Black Hills State University, I learned so much about the opportunities Spearfish has to offer. In addition to the beautiful surroundings, one can’t help but notice the care and concern this community has for one another. My understanding of this community blossomed even more as I made the decision to make Spearfish my permanent residence and took employment with the Spearfish Holiday Inn Convention Center. Over the last 15 years with the organization, I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety of clients and groups from local, regional, national, and even international locations. Through these exchanges, I continue to hear the same comments from those outside of our community; how nice the people of Spearfish are! And, how relaxing it is to be here! It dawned on me that I have the pleasure to experience Spearfish every day. The clients I work with encounter it for only a short time. I sometimes take for granted the unique opportunity I have to be a resident of this quaint little town that continues to develop and grow more beautiful each day. What a wonderful place to live! I am happy to be raising my children in a community where we know one another; where we can visit when we run into each other at the store; where we can meet at a variety of beautiful parks, and where we can feel safe and secure. I am proud to know my children are growing up in a school system that truly cares about their education and well-being. I am honored to call Spearfish my home, and I am excited to welcome you to our community!

Each year, the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce has the proud opportunity to honor business excellence at the Annual Banquet & Awards. The board of directors requests nominations from the membership and the public for multiple awards representing both business and community. Each year we receive nominations for more recipients than we have awards. What an amazing testament for the community we call home.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD was presented to Barb Cline. She initiated the transportation program for seniors in Spearfish in 1989 operating just a few hours a day. Her commitment is the major reason rural transportation exists in the Northern and Southern Black Hills of western South Dakota. Cline is committed to Spearfish and the region.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT BUSINESS BEAUTIFICATION AWARD was presented to Larry W. Veitz. Vietz passed away as the result of an ATV accident on November 4, 2017. In his most recent role as President of Spearfish Regional, he was highly instrumental in positively advancing health care at the local, regional, state, and national level. Accepting the award, Marsha Olson, Finance Director/ Controller and Karyla Dahl, Executive Assistant to the President.

Father and daughter team Joe Conklin and Traci Barkey teamed up to open Spearfish Qdoba & City Brew in July of 2016. The impressive building was designed to have the feel of the Black Hills. It exhibits stone, rusted metal, and a “ghost wood” product that emulates reclaimed barnwood.

SPIRIT OF SPEARFISH Beth Benning, who was born in Redfield, S.D., came to Spearfish to attend college and graduated from Black Hills State in May 1973. She worked for the city of Spearfish and served the city of Spearfish as the city finance officer for 35 years retiring in 2008. She continues to serve on a variety of boards and volunteers her time.

Prior to the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, the area now known as Spearfish was used by Native Americans (primarily bands of Sioux but others also ranged through the area) who would spear fish in the creek, hence the name of the creek and subsequently the town. Surveyed and staked out in 1876 and officially incorporated in 1888, the first residents of Spearfish gazed up at the ring of pine-clad hills and rocky bluffs that surrounded the community and noted how they looked like a crown. For this reason they called their small agricultural settlement the "Queen City," and it’s been thriving ever since. Spearfish’s first business opened in 1877 along with a United States Post Office, and the city soon evolved from a farming community (primarily to supply the notorious gold camp of Deadwood just 15 miles away) into a thriving academic and cultural center. Spearfish grew as a supplier of foodstuffs to the mining camps in the hills. Even today, a significant amount of truck farming or market gardening still occurs in the vicinity. Before South Dakota had even gained statehood, the people of the Black Hills of Dakota Territory demonstrated a high regard for education and began advocating for a university in the Black Hills. Dakota Territorial Normal School was founded in 1883, now known as Black Hills State University.

In 1938, Joseph Meier brought the Luenen Passion Play to settle permanently in Spearfish which became the Black Hills Passion Play, drawing thousands of visitors every year during the summer months. In 2008, after 70 years of summer performances, the Black Hills Passion Play was retired by Josef Meier’s daughter Johanna. Also in the 1930s, the Homestake Sawmill, now known as Spearfish Forest Products, was built to supply timbers for the Homestake Mine in Lead. The mine subsequently closed January 2002 and is now home to the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

THOEN STONE In 1887, the accepted history of gold mining in the Black Hills was thrown into question by the discovery of what has become known as the Thoen Stone. Discovered by Louis Thoen on the slopes of Lookout Mountain to the east of Spearfish, the stone portrays the last testament of Ezra Kind who, along with six others, entered the Black Hills in

1833 – over forty years before the legendary gold rush. Kind etched on the stone:

Came to these hills in 1833 seven of us all ded but me Ezra Kind….killed by ind beyond the high hill…. got our gold june 1834….got all the gold we could carry…our ponys all got by Indians….I hav lost my gun and nothing to eat…and Indians hunting me. There is a replica of the stone placed on a hill in Spearfish accessible through a short hike. When you reach the replica of the stone at the top of the hill, you can look across to Lookout Mountain and view a white “X” on the mountain. This is the area where the stone left by Ezra Kind was found. Years of research has been continued into the authenticity of this finding. Many of the men listed on the stone did indeed leave areas farther east, like Chicago and St. Louis, and headed west in search of gold and their families never heard from them again. There is corroborating historical evidence for the Ezra Kind party. The actual engraved sandstone slab that was found can be seen at the Adams Museum in Deadwood, SD.

Frank Lloyd Wright, a nationally renowned organic architect, visited Spearfish Canyon in 1935. The rough, muddy, and chuck-holed roadway that remained for eighteen years was the remnants of the Burlington Railroad that was pulled out in 1934 after the devastating flood of 1933 near Iron Creek. Upon his return to his home in Wisconsin, he wrote an inspiring expose of his Canyon experience:

There are sixteen developed parks and "pocket" parks, 2 dog parks, and many sports field areas. Spearfish parks offer a little something for everyone. Kids love the Playland in the City Park, as well as all the other parks throughout town. Sports enthusiasts will delight in the baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, football fields, horseshoes, sand volleyball, a skate park, soccer fields, tetherball, and tennis courts. Enjoy the 7.4 mile recreation path on foot or bicycle. The path runs alongside Spearfish Creek and winds in and out of a number of Spearfish parks. Bring fishing gear and find a spot along the Creek which is home to rainbow, brook, and brown trout.

GOLF Golfers can enjoy two 18-hole courses within the city limits, both with spectacular views. Or enjoy one of the 20 other golf courses in the Black Hills twisting through pine forests across rushing trout streams and opening up to mountain vista views. Disc golf is also an option with two courses right in town.

SPORTS COMPLEX Local softball teams and soccer teams practice and play on many well-maintained fields. A large local sports complex is host to city and regional events in baseball, softball, and soccer. It is also home to the new wood-bat collegiate baseball league, the Spearfish Sasquatch.

From May-September you will find the 2-acre outdoor pool full of residents and visitor alike. The water park includes slides, a lazy river, and other outdoor water features.

NATIONAL FOREST Both experienced and novice adventurers will find the limestone routes, cliffs, and craigs in Spearfish Canyon perfect for rock climbing at its best. The canyon and surrounding Black Hills are some of the nation's most popular up-and-coming climbing destinations.

Fishers can find their own personal paradise, whether it's casting a line in Spearfish Creek or venturing to one of the Black Hills' 14 mountain lakes. The area also contains some great birding habitats, including for the Great American Dipper. Spearfish also encourages a variety of hunting. Adjacent to town is a rifle range, an archery range, an eagle viewing area, and a multi-acre game production area that caters to turkey, deer and a variety of wildlife. Within a few minutes drive of town is access to 350-miles of marked, mapped, and groomed snowmobile trails that weave through the Black Hills National Forest. It is easy to find a three to four foot base of snow for winter fun, including some of the best cross-country ski trails and recreation areas for downhill skiing enthusiasts. There are also ample opportunities for ice climbing, downhill and Alpine skiing, snow shoeing, snow kayaking, and more! Looking for some off road fun without the snow? Within minutes you can enjoy hundreds of miles of out-of-the-way back roads and trails for ATV’s, 4x4’s, extreme rock crawling, and single track motorcycles during the warm months. Spearfish Canyon is a hiker’s paradise with numerous and easily accessible trails. You will also find pleasure in exploring the many U.S. Forest Service maintained trails in the Spearfish vicinity. Spearfish Canyon has a beauty unique to each season. Fall dazzles with great colors when the aspen and birch turn golden yellow and the oak and sumac flame shades of red. The Canyon is equally awe-inspiring in winter when heavy, wet snow piles up on the tree branches and canyon ridges. In springtime, the canyon renews itself becoming fresh and alive all over again. It is a favorite time for hikers, fishers, nature lovers and photographers of all ages. Summer brings sightseers, picnickers, and bird watchers.

WATERFALLS ARE A MUST Bridal Veil Falls can be seen right from the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. An observation deck located on the east side of the road provides a place to admire the falls and ample photo opportunities. The Roughlock Falls Nature Area is located in Spearfish Canyon near Savoy. Just one mile from the Scenic Byway, a short detour takes you to one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills. Spearfish Falls is the most often missed of the three waterfalls. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Latchstring Inn Restaurant, located at Savoy, to access the trailhead. A short hike on Little Spearfish Trail leads to this falls.

Spearfish Canyon is a hikers and bikers dream, with several marked Black Hills National Forest trails, as well as many unmarked local favorites. The top notch limestone walls in the canyon are a haven for rock climbers showcasing classic pocket climbing. Whether you explore the canyon via motor power or man power, it is an excellent place to enjoy a picnic in an organized picnic area or a spot off the beaten path.

FALL BEAUTY When the colors change, the adventure and beauty heightens in Spearfish. Every September and October visitors from around the world come to experience the fall splendor of the Spearfish Canyon. On average, the colors begin to change in mid-September and peak the first

CANYON BEGINNINGS Spearfish Canyon is twelve-times older than the Grand Canyon. The canyon’s rich vegetation, wears the mantle of being the most magnificent canyon in the west. Scientists have determined that Spearfish Canyon was formed 30 to 60 million years ago. As a great sea’s waters subsided it caused erosion of the softer rocks and volcanic action pushed from underneath; the combination created the canyon. It’s easy to see why this wonder of nature is a geologist’s paradise. The high canyon walls and deep canyon floor are composed of sandstone, shale, and dominantly limestone deposited in ancient oceans. The first commercial transportation through Spearfish Canyon was by train in 1893. When a flood damaged the rail line in 1933, the track was abandoned. Eventually, a road was laid directly on the old railway bed. Later, US Highway 14A was constructed.

GEOLOGY OF AREA Traveling through the canyon, three main layers of rock are distinctly visible. The highest peaks; typically the thickest part (up to 300 to 600 feet thick) are the Paha Sapa Limestone. It’s usually beige or tan with weathered gray areas, and it’s in this section of rock where people find the most fossils. The next level down is the Englewood Limestone, which can range from 30 to 60 feet thick. Englewood Limestone is quite often mauve, pink, or even red. The bottom layer is known as Deadwood Sandstone is normally a brown color and may appear to have different levels or layers. The Deadwood Sandstone layers can be 400 feet thick. Spearfish Creek, which flows south to north and freezes from the bottom up, is an angler’s dream. Designated as a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, you can find someone fishing nearly year-round throughout the Canyon. The canyon teems with wildlife including whitetail and mule deer, chipmunks, mountain goats, an occasional mountain lion, and many other critters.

CULTURAL ABOUNDS With a vibrant arts and cultural community, Spearfish is home to many artisans. From world-renowned to local talents, sculptors, potters, woodworkers, painters, photographers, jewelers, singers, song-writers, actors, and dancers all work to make Spearfish a hub for the visual and performing arts. Patrons of the arts support a variety of art venues including art galleries, studios, workshops, shows, and festivals. Throughout the year, there are many options to attend – or even participate in – live performances. Catch a play or musical at the historic Matthews Opera House downtown, or enjoy live musical performances on their historic stage. Get on the campus of Black Hills State University for an intimate recital or a main-stage theatre production. On any given weekend, performers gather in local pubs and eateries to entertain guests with music. Visual arts also abound in this community. Along with art galleries, festivals, and markets, artisans display their work in many restaurants and public buildings throughout the community.

Learn about the fisheries culture and view thousands of trout at the D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery and Archives. An official name for an official property, this hatchery is home to hundreds of thousands U.S. Fish & Wildlife artifacts. Open year-round, it really comes alive in the summer months with the gift shop, museum, railcar, and historic home available to the public.

Quality education is a cornerstone of the Spearfish community. Since the settling of the town, citizens have placed high emphasis on education, as witnessed by the founding of the Black Hills Normal School just a few years after the first homesteaders arrived.

BLACK HILLS STATE UNIVERSITY

The school system and Spearfish community place a high value on the education of its youth, and that expectation serves as a catalyst for student success in a rigorous learning environment. As Spearfish has grown steadily for several decades, so has the enrollment in the public school system with a 20% increase over the past ten years. The Spearfish School Board takes great pride in providing the students with the tools they need to succeed. When the town was formed, it served as the agrarian community for the northern Black Hills, supplying produce to Deadwood, Lead, and Belle Fourche. NIGHTLIFE There is always plenty of live entertainment, theater productions, restaurants, bars and pubs each with distinct personalities. A night out in Spearfish is truly what you make it. Many of the local restaurants feature local art, as well as local musicians. If you enjoy live theater, there are numerous options in the area with several here at home: from the local opera house community theater and live entertainment productions, to cowboy music and poetry at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, to theater productions, and professional recitals at the university. Catch the latest flick at the Northern Hills Cinema, work on your game at the local bowling alley, or simply catch up with friends at the local brewery or wine bars. During summer months, from the second Friday in June through Labor Day weekend, you can enjoy Downtown Friday Nights on Historic Main Street Spearfish and Spearfish Canyon Acoustic Series in the City Park during Wednesday nights in July.

SHOPPING As a micropolitan community, Spearfish offers big city shopping and services in a small town environment boasting over 40 unique specialty shops. Shopkeepers in Spearfish are well known for going the extra mile with friendly, personal service. Spearfish is home to over 30 different houses of worship that represent most major denominations and include numerous independent congregations. Area residents and visitors have ample opportunities to strengthen their faith through worship services, Sunday school, Bible study groups, choir, musical outreach, and many other fellowship activities. INFRASTRUCTURE We are fortunate in Spearfish to have multiple modes of transportation for the public to utilize ranging from a public bus system, charter bus service, cab company, and an airport.

BUS SYSTEM Prairie Hills Transit offers access to affordable public transportation, helping to foster the independence of our elderly residents, assisting them in keeping medical appointments and getting to the grocery store. It is an alternative for parents who do not live on an official school bus route allowing them to stay at work and know their children are safely getting where they need to go. And for those without a vehicle, it allows them to get to work, school, or appointments at an affordable rate.

AIR TRAVEL Black Hills Clyde Ice Field was dedicated in 1934 to the towns of Deadwood, Lead, and Spearfish. The airport is located 4 miles from downtown Spearfish and adjacent to Interstate 90. Spearfish is fortunate to be the home to the largest and fastest growing general airport in South Dakota. Offering more services and opportunities than any other general airport in the state, the airport caters to corporate air travelers. In 2016, jurisdiction for the airport moved from Lawrence County to the City of Spearfish.
