Spearfish was first settled in 1876 during one of America’s gold rushes. By the turn of the century, it was one of the last places in the United States to see regular stagecoach service while being one of the first cities in South Dakota to welcome aviation. MODERATE CLIMATE GIVE BACK

Perhaps one of the more subtle, yet pleasant, advantages to living in Spearfish is its semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons. Residents boast that Spearfish is a year-round community, with something for every season. With nearly 227 days of sunshine in a year, there are many opportunities to get outside and get active. July and August tend to be the warmest months in the region, with an average daily high temperature of 85° (low 62°), while January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average high temperature of 36° (low 15°). March tends to be the month with the most snowfall, with a little over 12 inches on average. Mild, sunny days are common throughout winter and the occasional Chinook winds delightfully surprise the residents throughout the region. Chinook winds are a warm, dry wind that blows down the east side of the Rocky Mountains during the winter months. It was due to a Chinook wind that Spearfish experienced the largest temperature change in the shortest amount of time: a 49° raise in just two minutes, then a 58° drop in only 27 minutes. On Jan. 22, 1943 at 7:30 a.m., the temperature was -4°F. In a mere two minutes, the mercury rose to +45°F. By 9 a.m. the gauge read 54°F and then the Chinook died down and 27 minutes later, the temperature was back to the original -4°F.

I serve on several local non-profit boards, which I personally find to be a beneficial way to give back and stay involved. I serve on these boards with my neighbors and my customers. I have even met many new people I now consider friends. Working together as a team has an incredible impact on our community as a whole. Another way to support your community is to shop local. The Spearfish businesses are the bread and butter of our community. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of independent businesses, each serving their customers’ tastes, creating a greater overall choice for all. Where we shop, where we eat and have fun – all of it makes this home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of Spearfish. Small businesses employ most of our residents. They are also customers of other businesses including local printers, accountants, wholesalers, farms, attorneys, etc., expanding opportunities for all of our local entrepreneurs. Business owners invest in their communities. They donate to local non-profits, to our children's events; they are our neighbors and friends. Taste of Spearfish – Taste of Spearfish offers an affordable way to sample culinary features from local restaurants, caterers, and beverage hosts in a casual atmosphere with entertainment. Watch for Taste of Spearfish on the last Monday evening of January. Annual Chamber Banquet & Awards – The Chamber celebrates business and community success each year with awards and dinner. Awards may include Spirit of Spearfish, Friend of the Chamber, Lifetime Achievement Award, Business Beautification Award, Young Professional of the Year, Micropolitan Award, and Ambassador of the Year. Community Picnic – It’s a sizzling good time as we serve up summer delights by beautiful Spearfish Creek. Watch for this event on the third Wednesday evening in August. Get tickets in advance or at the door. Annual Fundraiser – New in 2017! Part of our mission is to further develop our future workforce, which includes promoting lifetime education

Joe has been instrumental in making Spearfish what it is today from building the first franchise restaurant in 1973 (Pizza Hut) to constructing the first townhouse in 1983. This gentleman has been recognized by many organizations for his outstanding accomplishments, all of which have molded Spearfish into the community we know and love. Each year, the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce honors business excellence at the Annual Banquet & Awards. Excellence in Family Business Award was presented to Dakota Trailways for their commitment to family, employees, and community. Established in 1957 by Leo & Irene Erhart as a small business, this 3rd generation business now employees nearly 100 people throughout four states. They are very dedicated to their Spearfish roots and volunteer in many ways, including the Spearfish Fire Department and many youth sports. Congratulations on your 60th year in business! From Gold Rush to Scenic Byway

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Prior to the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, the area now known as Spearfish was used by Native Americans (primarily bands of Sioux but others also ranged through the area) who would spear fish in the creek, hence the name of the creek and subsequently the town.

Products, was built to supply timbers for the Homestake Mine in Lead. The mine subsequently closed January 2002 and is now home to the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

Surveyed and staked out in 1876 and officially incorporated in 1888, the first residents of Spearfish gazed up at the ring of pine-clad hills and rocky bluffs that surrounded the community and noted how they looked like a crown. For this reason they called their small agricultural settlement the “Queen City,” and it’s been thriving ever since.

In 1887, the accepted history of gold mining in the Black Hills was thrown into question by the discovery of what has become known as the Thoen Stone. Discovered by Louis Thoen on the slopes of Lookout Mountain to the east of Spearfish, the stone portrays the last testament of Ezra Kind who, along with six others, entered the Black Hills in 1833 – over forty years before the legendary gold rush. Kind etched on the stone “came to these hills in 1833 seven of us all ded but me Ezra Kind….killed by ind beyond the high hill….got our gold june 1834….got all the gold we could carry…our ponys all got by Indians….I hav lost my gun and nothing to eat…and Indians hunting me.”

Spearfish’s first business opened in 1877 along with a United States Post Office, and the city soon evolved from a farming community (primarily to supply the notorious gold camp of Deadwood just 15 miles away) into a thriving academic and cultural center. Spearfish grew as a supplier of foodstuffs to the mining camps in the hills. Even today, a significant amount of truck farming or market gardening still occurs in the vicinity. Before South Dakota had even gained statehood, the people of the Black Hills of Dakota Territory demonstrated a high regard for education and began advocating for a university in the Black Hills. Dakota Territorial Normal School was founded in 1883, now known as Black Hills State University. In 1938, Joseph Meier brought the Luenen Passion Play to settle permanently in Spearfish and become the Black Hills Passion Play, drawing thousands of visitors every year during the summer months. In 2008, after 70 years of summer performances, the Black Hills Passion Play was retired by Josef Meier’s daughter Johanna. Also in the 1930s, the Homestake Sawmill, now known as Spearfish Forest

Thoen Stone

There is a replica of the stone placed on a hill in Spearfish accessible through a short hike. When you reach the replica of the stone at the top of the hill, you can look across to Lookout Mountain and view a white “X” on the mountain. This is the area where the stone left by Ezra Kind was found. Years of research has been continued into the authenticity of this finding. Many of the men listed on the stone did indeed leave areas farther east, like Chicago and St. Louis, and headed west in search of gold and their families never heard from them again. Many current day treasure hunters still believe that the treasure from “all the gold we could carry” is still buried somewhere in the Black Hills. The actual engraved sandstone slab that was found can be seen at the Adams Museum in Deadwood, SD.

While it may seem unlikely that someone who has “lost my gun and nothing to eat and Indians hunting me” would take the time to carve his story in sandstone, there is corroborating historical evidence for the Ezra Kind party.

Canyon Impresses Frank Lloyd Wright Spearfish Canyon is rich in culture with the many notable footprints in the landscape. Trapper Hugh Glass, Lakota religious leader Black Elk, conservationist John Muir, bullwhacker Calamity Jane, President Teddy Roosevelt, George Belshaw and the Latchstring Inn, the Burlington Railroad, gold miner Potato Creek Johnny, and renowned organic architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Frank Lloyd Wright, a nationally renowned organic architect, visited Spearfish Canyon in 1935. The rough, muddy and chuck-holed roadway that remained for 18 years was the remnants of the Burlington Railroad that was pulled out in 1934 after the devastating flood of 1933 near Iron Creek. Upon his return to his home in Wisconsin, he wrote an inspiring expose of his Canyon experience, “But how is it that I’ve heard so little of this miracle and we, toward the Atlantic, have heard so much of the Grand Canyon when this is even more miraculous. All the better eventually ... that the Dakotas are not on the through line to the Coast ... My hat is off to South Dakota treasures.” Mr. Wright’s observations in 1935 were fully recognized with the designation of Spearfish Canyon as a State and National Scenic Byway in 1990. GET OUTDOORS Recognized as one of the top "50 Sports Towns of America" by Sports Afield, Spearfish is an outdoor sports enthusiast's dream. It’s a community that loves outdoor recreation, with ample opportunities for fishing, rafting, hiking, bicycling, boating, and more, all close to the population centers. Paved walking and biking trail systems are standard throughout the community enabling residents of all ages to safely walk, bike, and enjoy the outdoors. National parks and forests, state parks, county parks, and city parks, as well as designated open space and open land areas, are found throughout the region and are treasured by residents. Situated on the edge of a 1.2 million acre national forest, Spearfish provides endless opportunities for playing outside.

Playland in the City Park, as well as all the other parks throughout town. Sports enthusiasts will delight in the baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, football fields, horseshoes, sand volleyball, a skate park, soccer fields, tetherball, and tennis courts.

Sports Complex

Enjoy the 7.4 mile recreation path on foot or bicycle. The path runs alongside Spearfish Creek and winds in and out of a number of Spearfish parks. Take advantage of benches throughout the parks to relax and savor your surroundings. Bring fishing gear and find a spot along the Creek which is home to rainbow, brook and brown trout.

From May-September you will find the 2-acre outdoor pool full of residents and visitor alike. The water park includes slides, a lazy river, and more fun, outdoor water features. A few years ago, a dedicated group of developers purchased an empty Walmart building, sold it back to the City, and it was then recreated as a 60,000-squarefoot facility, adding a major highlight to an already active sports community.

Bike Path, Park System 2 Golf Courses As a community that truly embraces the outdoors, Spearfish takes pride in its parks. There are twenty-six developed parks, "pocket" parks, a dog park, and sports field areas. Spearfish parks offer a little something for everyone. Kids will love the

You can find a running/walking marathon just about every month in Spearfish, if not every weekend during the summer. They range from easy to difficult, short to long, recreation to fundraisers. Anglers can find their own personal paradise, whether it's casting a line in Spearfish Creek as it winds through town or venturing to one of the Black Hills' 14 mountain lakes. The area also contains some great birding habitats, including for the Great American Dipper. Spearfish also encourages a variety of fishing and hunting. Adjacent to town is a rifle range, an archery range, an eagle viewing area, and a multi-acre game production area that caters to turkey, deer and a variety of wildlife. The game production area has open hunting, with part being archery only. Those interested in larger game will find premier hunting for wild turkey, elk, pheasant, deer and even mountain lions in the area around Spearfish. Within a few minutes drive of town is access to 350-miles of marked, mapped and groomed snowmobile trails that weave through the Black Hills National Forest. It is easy to find a three to four foot base of snow for winter fun, including some of the best cross-country ski trails and recreation areas for downhill skiing enthusiasts. There are also ample opportunities for ice climbing, downhill and Alpine skiing, snow shoeing, snow kayaking and more! Looking for some off road fun without the snow? Spearfish Canyon has a beauty unique to each season. Fall dazzles with great colors when the aspen and birch turn golden yellow and the oak and sumac flame shades of red. The Canyon is equally awe-inspiring in winter when heavy wet snow piles up on the tree branches and canyon ridges. The season wraps the canyon in quiet and serenity. In springtime, the canyon renews itself, becoming fresh and alive all over again. It is a favorite time for hikers, anglers, nature lovers and photographers of all ages. Summer brings sightseers, picnickers, and bird watchers. Bikers, of both the motorized and peddled versions, find the canyon one of the best rides anywhere in the world.

Must-See Waterfalls Bridal Veil Falls can be seen right from the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. An observation deck located on the east side of the road provides a place to admire the falls and ample photo opportunities. The Roughlock Falls Nature Area, featured on the cover, is located in Spearfish Canyon near Savoy. Just one mile from the Scenic Byway, a short detour takes you to one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills. Unmarked, Spearfish Falls is the most often missed of the three waterfalls. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Latchstring Inn Restaurant, located at Savoy, to access the trailhead. A short hike on Little Spearfish Trail leads to this secret Falls.

are a haven for rock climbers, showcasing classic pocket climbing at its best. Whether you explore the canyon via motor power or man power, it is an excellent place to enjoy a picnic in one of the organized picnic areas, or just off the beaten path.

Fall Beauty When the colors change, the adventure and beauty heightens in Spearfish. Every September and October visitors from around the world come to experience the fall splendor of Spearfish Canyon. High limestone cliffs, waterfalls, towering spruces, Ponderosa pines, aspens, birches, burdocks, and box elders perfectly frame this creek carved gorge making Spearfish a truly awe-inspiring place during the autumn months. Changing temperatures and fall moisture can impact the intensity and length of time the canyon is in full-color. On average, the colors begin to change in mid-September and peak the first week of October. Every year is different, so give us a call for the local leaf forecast.

Canyon Beginnings Spearfish Canyon is twelve-times older than the Grand Canyon, and because of the canyon’s rich vegetation, wears the mantle of being the most magnificent canyon in the west. Scientists have determined that Spearfish Canyon was formed 30 to 60 million years ago. As a great sea’s waters subsided it caused erosion of the softer rocks and volcanic action pushed from underneath; the combination created the canyon. It’s easy to see why this wonder of nature is a geologist’s paradise. The high canyon walls and deep canyon floor are composed of sandstone, shale and, dominantly, limestone deposited in ancient oceans.

The first commercial transportation through Spearfish Canyon was by train in 1893. Several early attempts to lay a road failed, so most travelers accessed the canyon by horseback or train. When a flood damaged the rail line in 1933, it was abandoned. Eventually, a road was laid directly on the old railway bed. Later, US Highway 14A was constructed allowing more people access to this breathtaking, scenic wonder.

Rocks Detail Geology Traveling through the canyon, three main layers of rock are distinctly visible. The highest peaks, typically the thickest part, up to 300 to 600 feet thick, are the Paha Sapa Limestone. It’s usually beige or tan with weathered gray areas, and it’s in this section of rock where people find the most fossils. The next level down is the Englewood Limestone, which can range from 30 to 60 feet thick. Englewood Limestone is quite often mauve, pink or even red. The bottom layer is known as Deadwood Sandstone and is normally a brown color and may appear to have different levels or layers. The Deadwood Sandstone layers can be 400 feet thick. The narrow canyon walls rise sharply skyward from the creek. Spearfish Creek, which flows south to north and freezes from the bottom up, is an angler’s dream. Designated as a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, you can find someone fishing nearly year-round throughout the Canyon. The canyon teems with wildlife including whitetail and mule deer, chipmunks, an occasional mountain lion, and many other critters.

Head over to the Termesphere Gallery for a close up look at the works of an internationally renowned artist. What you see when you look at a Termesphere is an optical illusion – an inside-out view of the total physical world around you on the outside surface of a hanging and rotating sphere. Dual Enrollment Dual enrollment is available for students at the parochial schools grades six through eight to attend two classes at Spearfish Middle School, allowing the students to participate in public school sports, band, and choir. Spearfish High School offers dual credit course in partnership with Black Hills State University, also based in Spearfish. This allows the students to simultaneously enroll in high school and post-secondary credit courses, awarding them a post secondary institution transcript upon completion.
