We are making HISTORY in Chickasha!

It is an exciting time as we celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce. We have so much to look back on and we are thankful for the many engaged citizens that have worked so hard to make our community what it is today. Many experts believe that history repeats itself and I believe they are right. In 1971, Chickasha was recognized as an All American City and today we have an active Keep Chickasha Beautiful Campaign, an engaged Community Alliance Committee and the Chamber is working closely with the Economic Development Council and the City of Chickasha to strategically shape our future.

If there is one thing the past 100 years has taught us, it is that our city’s greatest asset is our people. The success of our future depends upon having many citizens do their part to work towards a shared vision for the future. As we all work together, amazing things happen.

When accomplished leaders from decades ago tell me they have never seen the kind of energy and excitement that they see in the Chickasha Chamber today, it proves that amazing things are actually happening. This will be an unprecedented year for Chickasha as we continue to accomplish more than many ever thought was possible, and continue to dream even bigger. Welcome to Chickasha!

Chickasha is the county seat of Grady County and sits on a major interstate that connects two of the largest metro areas in the State of Oklahoma. Geographically, it’s a great place to be, but everyone knows it takes more than a great location to thrive in today’s world. What does Chickasha have to offer that separates us from the rest of the pack? From my point of view, the answers run rampant.

As I think about my day-to-day life here in Chickasha, I harken back to my childhood and think about how far Chickasha has come in my 31 years. No one can deny that our community is thriving. Civic service, leadership and moving our city forward remain at the forefront of several minds. Chickasha is never short on volunteers nor are we short on individuals that want to help their fellow neighbor, colleague, or business associate. We have big dreamers but we also have big DOERS. A lot of those leaders that I remember from my childhood are still here working tirelessly for the prosperity of Chickasha. They have done a tremendous job of setting the example for the next generation. For that, I say thank you!

Businesses from all sectors of the economy call Chickasha home. We have several manufacturers that not only serve as large employers but conduct business on a regional, national and international basis. From big box stores to boutiques, we have it all. Active store fronts can be found throughout Chickasha. You will never go hungry in Chickasha! The restaurant scene remains unbeaten - new and long-loved establishments can be found throughout the city. Several of these restaurants have attracted visitors from far and wide for several years as they will continue to do in the future. Students can obtain their high school diploma (Go Fightin’ Chicks!), college degree (Go Drovers!), or attend the booming vo-tech that assists in preparing people for jobs that can be filled right here in Chickasha. New residential developments are thriving as well as exciting commercial developments along Grand Avenue. Both of these will continue to attract investment in Chickasha for many years to come. Do you need expert advice from a medical professional? Not to worry, the folks at Grady Memorial Hospital have you covered as well as other specialized healthcare facilities in our area. Being so close to our State’s Capital can be a good thing, but don’t think you have to drive to the “big city” to have your entertainment needs met. We have top-notch sports facilities that are utilized by athletes of all ages from all over the region. The Oklahoma Food Truck Championships continues to grow and attract more visitors each year. The Festival of Light at Shannon Springs Park will always be an event that is cherished by our citizenry and others from our region. It’s been running for over 30 years now and the excitement never ends. Of course, we can’t forget the ever-famous Leg Lamp that gains more notoriety with each passing year. The Leg Lamp’s ability to attract visitors to Chickasha has proven priceless. The near constant events held at the Grady County Fairgrounds will always be vital to the health of Chickasha. The facilities at the fairgrounds are top notch. Our city is where you want to be!

I want to say thank you for allowing me to represent the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce as the Chairman for 2023. The team at the Chamber works tirelessly to serve our current members and future members like yourself. We remain committed to the success of Chickasha and surrounding communities. Leadership CHICKASHA

WHAT IS LEADERSHIP CHICKASHA?

Leadership Chickasha is a program of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce designed to develop informed, vigorous, skilled and effective leaders for involvement in all facets of the community.

The class is designed to give participants a broad yet intensive look into the Chickasha community. Leadership Chickasha is a seven-month program that meets a full day, beginning at 8 a.m. and running until around 4 p.m., the second Thursday of every month, September - March.

Leadership Chickasha presented numerous opportunities to improve networking and professional development with local and leading community members. It features the innovations, renovations, and development that Chickasha continues to build upon every year and emphasizes the strategically improving profitability and success of local businesses, non-profit organizations, and helpful leaders in the community. As USAO alum, this also improves the quality of life for students during their time at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma as well as their post-college careers in Chickasha.

Agriculture

Grady County ranks first in Oklahoma in dairy production with over 11,500 milk cows and is home to Oklahoma's largest dairy, Braum's Dairy Farms. Comprised of 605,000 acres of fertile agricultural land, Grady County is an extremely diversified agricultural area with a gross value of agriculture production of approximately $209 million. Livestock production accounts for approximately $130 million and crops makes up the other $79 million.

More than 20,000 acres in Grady County is planted in Alfalfa hay and is an important cash crop. Alfalfa hay is used for both dairy cattle and horses as well as exported to other states, especially Texas. Alfalfa production represents an estimated $7.8 million.

Forage production is another important segment of Grady County agriculture. Approximately 81,000 acres of wheat is planted annually providing excellent wheat pasture for growing stocker cattle production. Most of the wheat is grazed during the winter months and into the spring and some is harvested as hay. Wheat produced from the 41,000 acres harvested for gain represents a value of almost $7 million.

Energy

Chickasha and Grady County are positioned in one of the few active oil and gas exploration areas (SCOOP) in this current oil/gas pricing environment. The industry will benefit from advancing technology and evolving water recycling solutions that will solidify this resource as an economic driver for our area for many years. Wind Turbines for electricity generation are now a permanent fixture in the Grady County landscape, demonstrating that Grady County will be a contributor to renewable energy resources as well.

Housing

The Chickasha area offers many housing options within our city limits and the surrounding area. Whether living alone and looking for a one bedroom apartment, a young family ready to invest in that first starter home or families seeking an upscale country club location; Chickasha has a neighborhood for you.

Apartment complexes include multiple layout configurations with rental rates starting around $400500. Many property owners in the area also have single family houses available for rent with rental rates starting in the $500 - $600 per month range. The median sales price of homes in Chickasha is $128,000 with a new 1,500 square foot home normally selling for approximately $185,000.

A 20-30 year old 1,500 square foot home would typically have a sales price of $150,000. Homes in more exclusive neighborhoods in the 2,000 square foot range will typically begin around $200,000.

Education

Chickasha is proud to offer a nationally recognized university, a growing technology center and seven sites of public education, as well as a private elementary school.

Chickasha Public Schools

Serve over 2,200 students from Pre-K through 12th grade. The district has approximately 175 certified and 150 noncertified personnel helping to ensure the best education opportunities for Chickasha’s youngest residents.

Chickasha has one Early Childhood Center which houses Pre-K, Kindergarten and first grade, two Elementary Schools, one Middle School and one High School. Gifted classes or enrichment programs are available at every level, including advanced placement for Chickasha High School students. Each of the school sites are accredited by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Chickasha Public School also offers an Alternative School as well as an Adult Education Center.

Science and Arts (USAO)

The state’s only public liberal arts college, students get a distinctive educational experience. USAO’s innovative and creative interdisciplinary core curriculum, combined with superior instruction in major fields of study, prepares students for the challenges and opportunities associated with today’s dynamic workforce. With small class sizes; approachable faculty; and a beautiful historic campus, USAO provides students with experiences and opportunities unlike any other public institution in Oklahoma. Students have the chance to work interactively by conducting research, gaining real-world experience, and designing projects that will not only prepare them for their chosen career field, but also equip

them for extraordinary professional success and a life of tremendous impact.

Canadian Valley Technology Center

Served the educational needs of Canadian and Grady Counties since 1970. With campuses in Chickasha, El Reno and Yukon, CV Tech offers a wide variety of full-time career programs, short-term courses, and customized business and industry training. CV Tech’s mission is to prepare people to succeed through quality career and technical educational programs and services.

CV Tech’s Chickasha Campus has two new programs planned for Fall 2023 to provide a total of 16 full-time programs for high school and adult students, plus 2 adult-only programs. These programs include career education in areas such as arts and communications; business management; health sciences; human services; and industrial, manufacturing, and engineering.

The Chickasha Campus proudly serves high school juniors, seniors and adults from the following in-district communities; Alex, Amber, Pocasset, Chickasha, Minco, Ninnekah, Rush Springs and Tuttle.

In addition to serving high schools and adults in our community, CV Tech also assists with the economic development in our district by working with local companies to provide customized training and consultation services that make them more productive and profitable.

Arts

The Art scene in Chickasha is just as abundant as our incredible history. Chickasha has multiple opportunities for artists and art lovers to experience various art mediums. Art comes alive in Chickasha with multiple theatre performances, music, dance, and art festivals.

The Chickasha Community Theater (CCT)

A non-profit organization with a mission of advancing the cultural life of the surrounding area by providing theatrical productions and workshops. It produces five to seven shows per year in addition to ongoing fundraisers. The Chickasha Community Theatre is housed in the historic Washita Theater in downtown Chickasha.

The Washita Theater opened in its current location August of 1941. Formally known as the Sugg Theatre, the theater had been a vital part of the community until December 1939 when a fire struck down the 1917 original building. Today, the Washita is a beautiful theater that displays architecture of a time past. The Chickasha Community Theatre acquired the building in 2000 and spent 10 years renovating the historic building. Chickasha Area Arts Council (CAAC)

A catalyst of promoting the arts in Chickasha. For the last 20 years CAAC has been able to provide and promote a variety of art activities for the community. The long-term vision and goal of the Arts Council is to work with local businesses, organizations and individuals to revitalize the Depot area of downtown Chickasha into an Arts and Entertainment District. Each year CAAC organizes and facilitates three major art programs for the community; ArtScope Day Camp, First Saturday Morning FREE Art Classes for Children, and the Rock Island Arts Festival. In addition, the CAAC participates in other events, activities and workshops in the area.

Rock Island Arts Festival

Features individual performers and music groups, artisans, judged art contest, student art contest, children’s art classes, art demonstrations for adults, wine tasting, beer garden, food crafters, business and much more!

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma

A sanctuary for the arts. With multiple art gallerias housed on a campus filled with student art, it is the place to be for artists of all kinds. They also hold a number of events each year for the art community, including; The Montmartre Chalk Art Festival, Droverstock Music Festival and the Davis-Waldorf Performing Arts Series.

Culture

Chickasha has rhythm and roots. Whether it’s worldclass events at the Grady County Fairgrounds or lowkey music patio nights at many Chickasha locationsChickasha delivers. The cornerstone of the community, The Rock Island Depot holds many events throughout the year and is famous in the Historic Downtown area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985, the Rock Island Train Depot is the oldest remaining piece of monumental architecture in the community. When the rail line crossed the Washita River in 1892, the city of Chickasha was founded to serve as a passenger and rail freight station. The railroad was vital to Chickasha becoming an important trade and transportation center in South Central Oklahoma.

Chickasha has many area locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Federal Courthouse, which is currently utilized as Chickasha City Hall. Take a stroll through our Historic Downtown, the beautiful University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma campus, or Shannon Springs Park . In the late 1800’s the Shannon Springs artesian well was used for water on the Chisholm Trail, a post-Civil War cattle trail through

Oklahoma to Texas and Kansas. A park was established at the site of the Shannon Springs by the early 1900’s. From 1936 to 1939, Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed the walls and drainage ditches, the bathhouse, a large amphitheater, the caretaker’s house, a warehouse and a stone bridge spanning the lake. Today, Shannon Springs is a beautiful oasis in the middle of Chickasha and is home to the Festival of Light during the Christmas season and a splash pad and pool where you can cool off in the warmer months.

Dive into the astonishing history of Chickasha at the Grady County Museum, home of the Grady County Historical Society, housed in the former Dixie Department Store building. The Grady County Museum offers several collections including information and records of early pioneers settling in the northwest corner of the Chickasaw Nation, artifacts for the Rock Island Railroad, items from the W & B Flying School dating from the WWII era, you’ll learn why Chickasha was dubbed “Queen of the Washita.”

History

To meet the needs of transportation across the growing United States, the Rock Island Railroad laid track from Kansas across Oklahoma Territory ending north of the northwest corner of future Grady County. Paralleling the Chisholm Trail, the tracks entered the Chickasaw lands of Indian Territory at Mino and continued to the next selected division point on its way to the Red River. This new point was on the south side of the Washita River on land owned by the James Speed family. In April 1892 the town site for Chickasha, I.T. was opened. It was located in a corn field surrounded by a wire fence. A frame depot was constructed to replace the boxcar that had served as a temporary depot and an agent was appointed by Rock Island Railroad. Tents and small wood shacks were used to house both businesses and families which created the impression of a "shack or rag town".

The first business, the "Cowboy Saloon" opened in spite of the prohibition against alcohol sales in Indian Territory. Another tent housed the Citizens Bank. Its tent was secured by two armed guards on duty around the clock until its wood building was finished. The Post Office was moved from Pennsie, three miles to the north. New buildings were constructed along Chickasha Avenue on stilts ten to twelve feet above the ground to protect the buildings from flood waters. The first brick building was constructed in 1893. Rail workers and pioneers continued to move to the new rail-head leaving the little communities of Fred and Pensie as ghost towns.

Chickasha grew rapidly from over 3,000 in 1900 to over 7,000 at statehood. The early city was served by three railroads. The Rock Island had large repair shops, the Frisco served the oil fields and the Santa Fe delivered coal to western Oklahoma. By 1921 the city provided parks, a Carnegie Library, trolley, water and electricity, miles of paved streets and sidewalks, fair grounds, and a baseball park. Beautiful homes and church buildings were constructed along with seven new ward school buildings, a High School and a Junior High School which was the first in Oklahoma. The concept was quickly adopted by other cities. The residents had hired a school superintendent in 1901 to create a school system for the pioneer children which included changing Federal rules to allow a city in the Territory to sell bonds for school buildings.

The first college established by the first State Legislature in 1908 was located in Chickasha on land donated by J.B Sparks to honor his late daughter, Nellie. The institution began as the Oklahoma Industrial Institute and College for Girls with a High School for young women included. The original building, which still exists, was also constructed in

a corn field. The name was change to Oklahoma College for Women in 1916. In keeping with the requirements of the changing times, the school became co-educational and assumed the name Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in 1965. Later in response to new legislation, the name was changed to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and is nationally rated as one of the best buys in education today.

Chickasha began as the area’s market hub. Its central location with transportation facilities including rail, local, state, and federal highway system, allowed movement of product to market, Five national banks were the foundation of the financial community at the beginning with additional banking institutions being added to meet the needs of the businesses and residents. The city was platted in the fertile Washita River Valley with its potential for profitable agricultural crops including corn, wheat, and cotton, with livestock ranches and dairy farms. Oil and gas fields which were discovered and produced added another industry to the economy of the area.

The community businesses responded to the needs of WWI by milling and shipping flour overseas from the Chickasha Milling Company. When another threat to the world came in the 1940’s, the community rallied to the support of the country’s war efforts. In 1944, funding for the creation of an airport with a long runway. This became the home of the Wilson and Bonfil Flying School, land for the U.S. Army Military Hospital, and facilities for prisoner of war camps. The hospital land, the facilities located at the airport and the fairgrounds benefit the city and surrounding area today. The hospital site is now the home of the Chickasha High School, a newly renovated and expanded complex. The Grady County Fairgrounds is currently developing into one of the premire centers in the state with the new air-conditioned arena. The improvemed facilities at the fairgrounds and the popular Sports Complex are fueling the construction of additional hotels and restaurants in the community.

Promoted as the “Queen of the Washita”, Chickasha has witnessed a steady growth since the rapid beginning while continuing to adapt to the needs of the changing times. The “all American City” continues its search to secure and expand industrial, educational, and social programs.

Over 35 Food Trucks from all over OK come to Chickasha’s Historic Downtown District the first Saturday of October to compete for $10,000 in cash. With cuisines ranging from eggrolls to ice cream, OKFTC is your one-stop to food paradise.

Celebrating 30 years, the Festival of Light is a primer Christmas experience featuring over two million lights, ice skating rink, food trucks, and carnival rides centered around a 109 ft. lighted Christmas tree.

On August 1, 1923 the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce was officially established. However, to Chickasha the Chamber of Commerce was not anything new. Most of the community knew them before the Business Men’s Club. The Chickasha Commercial Club, the Grady County Commercial and Farm Bureau or even the American City Bureau. No matter what the name was the individuals focused on the betterment of the business community in Chickasha.
