PROF. MAUREEN SANTAMARÍA Author and Executive Director of ChiCeLaCu!

Behind CHICELACU is the passion of Professor Maureen Santamaría, its founder and executive director. Guided by her Nicaraguan roots and her bicultural experience as a U.S. citizen, Maureen founded the Children’s Center for Language and Culture, Inc. (CHICELACU) 20 years ago, achieving a beautiful milestone: creating the first Spanish immersion learning center in Northern Virginia. Today, with the same enthusiasm as day one, she leads an organization accredited by the Virginia Department of Education, whose three campuses in Fairfax, Tysons-Vienna, and Arlington proudly serve as official contractors for Fairfax County Public Schools. An educator by vocation, Maureen has spent more than 35 years teaching in Latin America and the United States. Her path in the classroom is both broad and diverse: she has served as a lead Spanish teacher in the Virginia public school system, supported special education students in Maryland, and directed the Spanish reading program at Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences. Her deep commitment to childhood also led her to work as a UNICEF consultant for seven years and to author works on curriculum development, child poverty, and child labor, backed by her Bachelor’s degree in Education and her master's-level coursework in Urban Development and Demography. Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maureen found a new way to engage young learners through her role as a children's literature author. Over the last six years, she has dedicated herself to writing 50 books designed to support Spanish literacy among preschool and elementary school children. Within these pages, she adapts classic literature and introduces new generations to esteemed Latin American authors, including Rubén Darío. Currently, she divides her days between developing and managing CHICELACU and fostering the growth of CHICELACU Publications as its primary author. Outside of her professional role, her greatest joy is spending time with her family and caring for her two adorable rescued street cats: Chito (affectionately named after "muchachito") and Bell (after "campanita"). When she is not writing or teaching, she enjoys reading the newspapers, capturing moments with her camera, working in her garden with her magnolia and apple trees, or exploring nature, volcanoes, and islands during her travels throughout the United States, Central America, and México.

LITERACY MATERIALS INSPIRED BY AND CREATED FOR OUR STUDENTS In our continuous effort to foment a love of reading and support our young students in their literacy journey, ChiCeLaCu! is pleased to announce the creation of the first of many publications to come. This effort builds upon decades of direct classroom experience and is motivated by a sincere desire to provide our students with materials that will support early literacy and inspire an appreciation and love for classic Latin American literature.

MR. ALVARO UMAÑA ART TEACHER, ILLUSTRATOR, AND DESIGNER

A native of Nicaragua, Mr. Umaña began developing his artistic ability at a very young age. While his expertise as an architect for the past 18 years has focused on technical design and drawings, his true passion lies in drawing as an artistic expression. As ChiCeLaCu!’s principal illustrator and designer, he has developed a series of educational materials currently in use across several programs. Part of ChiCeLaCu!’s online teaching staff, he finds great enjoyment and fulfillment in imparting his knowledge and expertise to a new generation of learners with basic tools like paper and pencil. He believes that in a highly digital world, a bit of art can help refresh young minds. Mr. Alvaro has taken many pencil portraits and art courses and loves to draw by hand, mainly in graphite. He completed high school in Cuba in 1991 and graduated as a Naval Construction Technician from La Habana, Cuba’s Instituto Politécnico Naval Aracelio Iglesias Díaz. In 1998, he received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Universidad Nacional de Engineering in Managua, Nicaragua. He loves to spend time with family, and in his free time, he enjoys drawing landscapes and portraits of friends and family. A talented, resilient, and optimistic individual, he has been an active member of the National Association of Multiple Sclerosis in Nicaragua for the past 25 years.

MR. MARLON UMAÑA ART TEACHER AND ILLUSTRATOR

Born in Nicaragua, Mr. Marlon Umaña graduated with a civil engineering degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Chinandega, Nicaragua. He has participated in many housing, school, and street infrastructure projects. His interest in drawing began at a very early age. By age 16, he enrolled in Nicaragua’s School of Plastic Arts, where, in addition to honing and perfecting his drawing skills, he learned to sculpt with clay, oil, charcoal, and paper mache. As part of ChiCeLaCu!’s design and illustration team, he is involved in developing educational materials, including the center’s first children’s picture book. Mr. Umaña currently teaches ChiCeLaCu!’s online Cartoon Workshop, where he finds great joy in sharing his skill with students ages 7 to 11. He is a dedicated teacher who prepares daily resources for his students and makes his classes enjoyable and engaging, instilling in them a love of art. Reading historical novels, drawing, and spending time with his three daughters, wife, and mother are among his favorite activities. He enjoys cooking traditional food for his family and riding his motorcycle along the Pacific Ocean.

MR. WILLIAM SANTAMARÍA ILLUSTRATOR

Mr. William Santamaría Tercero is a young illustrator born in Managua, Nicaragua. His interest in art began when William was eight years old, practicing on any surface available. His formal training began in 2007 at the Rodrigo Peñalba School of Plastic Arts, where William learned and perfected the use of light and shadow on paper and digital media. Two years later, he joined the world of graffiti, using spray paints, paint, bristles, and brushes, further improving his drawing techniques. In 2020, William graduated with a degree in graphic design from the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua. Digital illustration caught his interest after graduation, and he independently perfected his craft using Illustrator and Photoshop. Mr. Santamaria currently dedicates a large part of his time to ChiCeLaCu as a member of its team of illustrators, contributing to the creation of images for various educational materials. A patient, dedicated, and creative illustrator, he loves drawing in his spare time and going on long walks with his three charming dogs.
