There was something for everyone on the water in 2023. Of course, the 114th Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust continues to be the crown jewel of our racing season. The Race to Mackinac Committee is already hard at work planning the 115th. In addition to hosting the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta and the Offshore and Inshore Verve Regattas, we welcomed the C420 Nationals and the J/70 North Americans. Every week during the season there were onthe-water activities available for members: Wednesday Night Skyline Series, Sail Fast Thursdays, and the Women on the Water Friday Night Series. Members enjoyed renting the Club’s fleet of Sonars and Tom 28s, the 25’ Sea Ray Power Boat, and our paddleboards and kayaks. We added the J/145 to our fleet that will be available for teaching, community outreach, and some member rental.

The Power Fleet had another successful season of Navigational Rallies. Both the Power Fleet and Cruising Sail Fleet cruised to destinations around the lake and hosted popular Community Outreach Cruises. The Chicago Regatta presented

by Wintrust raised over $122,000 for children’s causes this year.

Our Sailing School, Crew U, and Adult Education Programs were sold out. On land, our Nautical Education Series kept us engaged and thinking about being on the water during the winter. We had speakers, Membership Mixers, and many special events at Monroe and at Belmont. There was something for everyone on and off the water all season long.

Finally, we will celebrate the Club’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2025. Betsy Barrett has graciously agreed to chair the planning committee for this exciting year. Plans have begun, but she needs all of us to make it a year to remember.

As we embark on a brand new year, I want to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to each and every one of you.

Happy New Year!

First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support during my inaugural year as Membership Director at Chicago Yacht Club. I’m incredibly thankful to be a part of this amazing community of passionate and engaged members.

One of the highlights of my year was the opportunity to visit the picturesque Mackinac Island. This experience allowed me to witness firsthand the dedication and hard work that goes into making the annual Race to Mackinac presented

by Wintrust - a pillar of the maritime heritage that Chicago Yacht Club is renowned for. This race is a true testament to the passion and commitment of our members who participate in this remarkable event year after year.

Additionally, 2023 brought a series of Prospective Member Receptions that were nothing short of a great success.

These events allowed us to showcase the unique charm and offerings of Chicago Yacht Club, and I'm thrilled to report that several guests were so captivated that they submitted their membership applications on the very same night of the event. I want to take this moment to extend a big "THANK YOU" to our dedicated Membership Committee.

Their relentless efforts in promoting membership events, giving tours to prospective members, and wholeheartedly advocating for the club have been instrumental in our achievements.

When I look back to when I first joined the club, it was an exciting but scary time.

My wife Rose and I had just bought our first sailboat, Incommunicado, but were still very inexperienced. So joining the Chicago Yacht Club was a natural first step. We didn’t know any members and had never joined any social clubs before, so we were a little intimidated. Of course, we made friends with Marc Anderson at Belmont! He always made us feel welcome, so we kept coming back.

After a few months, we found a great new bar and restaurant, but that was the extent of how we used the club.

We had heard that joining committees was a great way to get more involved with the club, and more importantly, to meet new people. That sounds easy, but it only created more questions for us: Which committee should we join?

How do I join? What does it entail? What if they find out I don’t know anything?

All of these questions were floating around, which would make anyone close down. Instead, I reached out to our Membership Director (Emily Giaimo at the time, Melissa Czyz is our current one), and she asked me to come to a Membership Committee meeting. I went to the meeting and learned a lot about the club. Even better, when the meeting was over, everyone went downstairs and had dinner together. That was when things really started coming together! I had met the committee members and eventually began to meet their circle of friends, and then more friends.

I finally understood what the club was all about!

Our job as the Membership Committee is to attract new members and to enhance the member experience. I would like to thank the Club Staff and all of the volunteers that make our committees, programs, and on-the-water opportunities possible. If you have not dipped your toe in the committee water yet, now is a great time to get involved. Not only will you be giving back, but you will also have an awesome time, meet new people, and maybe even learn something new making your Chicago Yacht Club membership that much more valuable. If you’re not sure where to start, please reach out to me, Jennifer Muir, Melissa Czyz, or any other staff member to help point you in the right direction - just like they did for me! ✶

Mark Croll and the Old Guard Committee carried on the 70-year tradition of celebrating our Old Guard members in fine style with both a race and a spectacular dinner at Belmont on Friday, July 14th. Here’s how it unfolded.

Like a number of our 25 most senior members that make up the “Old Guard,” Rick Van Mell flew into town on Wednesday and landed just before severe thunderstorms shut down O’Hare and boomed across the city. Staying across the street from Belmont Harbor, he caught this picture of a double rainbow right over the Belmont clubhouse. Maybe a good reminder of the “pot of gold” that the wisdom and memories of the Old Guard contribute to CYC. Mark had three skippers lined up for Friday’s race: Peter Barrett, Sam Sax and Rick Van Mell. Unfortunately, Sam’s doctor proscribed “no-sun” at the last minute, so the race became a match race. At the Skipper’s Meeting at 1300, PRO Nancy Sindelar reviewed the Sailing Instructions. A windward leeward course, marks to port, with 2 or 4 legs to be determined on the water, life jackets for all crew, and communication on VHF channel 73.

We departed the Belmont docks sailing Sonars - Rick in boat # 5 and Peter in boat # 7. Thanks to the Belmont staff under the direction of Chuck Nevel, the boats were rigged and waiting. The wind was puffy and shifty southwest,

ranging from about ten to just under 20 knots in the higher puffs. Sporty conditions if you are 90 years old. The mark botts were used in fine fashion and Nancy set up a course about three quarters of a mile long. Starting about a mile offshore, the weather mark was near Diversey Harbor.

The Prep Gun was sounded at 1415 for a 1420 start. Mark, watching the very close start from the pin end, later asked Helle Getz, “Did Rick just make that by a foot?” Helle replied, “An inch!” Rick covered Peter on the upwind leg and led at the windward mark and again at the leeward mark. Rounding with a comfortable margin, he held on port tack until fairly near the lay line back to the windward mark.

Tacking to starboard, it looked pretty good at the time.

However, Peter continued on port tack and before long they were separated by quite a distance. When they converged again approaching the weather mark, Rick had to duck Peter’s stern as he came in on starboard tack. But Peter was pinching and just laying the mark. When Rick tacked to starboard a few lengths to weather, he was able to gain speed. Then Peter had to round the mark a bit wide, Rick gybed inside between Peter and the mark. Now to windward and getting the puffs first, he was able to blanket Peter and ease ahead on the race to the finish line. He finished just eight seconds ahead.

We all returned to Belmont about 1545, stowed our gear, and got cleaned up for the celebration dinner at 1700.

The upper dining room between the Robling case and the Galley was set up for the Old Guard. A crowd of a little over two dozen slowly gathered. With beverages in hand, it was time to greet old friends and make new ones. The serving crew passed hot hors d'oeuvres of cuban spring rolls and spinach & brie quesadillas which was a special touch.

Then Mark made the presentation of the Jefferson Cups, the traditional Old Guard keeper prize, and had the permanent Fred M. Nolde Memorial Old Guard Trophy on display. It is “for competition among the Old Guard in an annual race, using one of the active racing classes in the Club. First raced in 1950, it was won by Eddie Schnabel in 1951 using the R Class, then he won again in 52, 53, 54, & 56 (no race in 55) in the 22 Square Meter Class, then once more in 1957 in the L-16 Class. This year using the club’s Sonars, Rick Van Mell added his second victory to the list, and he had the same crew as his first: brother Derrick Van Mell and niece Sabina Van Mell.

then he would have won by 2 seconds.

Belmont Executive Chef Raul Polidario, under the direction of Alejandra Medina, orchestrated a delightful first course with the starters already mentioned, then on to house salad with balsamic vinegarette, chicken piccatta and petit filet, with dauphinois potato, and grilled asparagus. Topping it all off was a fabulous dessert of vanilla crème brûlée. When Belmont F&B Manager Marc Anderson brought Raul out to introduce him to the Old Guard, he got a well-deserved standing ovation.

There were great stories from sailing dynasties like Peter, to Betsy – Women’s Champion Adams Cup winner, and to the O’Neills who have one of the longest list of Mac Trophy wins of anyone. Add Retired Admiral Sam Sax and his stories of first stepping aboard a mine sweeper in 1955, and there is lore galore to infuse a wonderful book. Or perhaps, one year the Old Guard Celebration will put those of us willing on a dais for a big club dinner, let us each tell a tale, then invite our members to pepper them with questions. What wideeyed junior might be inspired by knowing Wally Stenhouse finished a Transatlantic Race in 2nd place without a rudder?

It was a great gathering, and we had seven Old Guard plus families and friends in attendance. ✶

Rick thanked Mark and his Old Guard Committee, including Barbara Mehaffey, Betsy Barrett, Nancy Sindelar, and Mary McCarthy, for great organization. Also lauded was the Race Committee for the event led by Nancy Sindelar, Helle Getz, Bridget Hennebry and Barbara Mehaffey, plus Mark and Regatta Manager Patrick Burks on the pin boat and mark bott shepherd.

Commodore Lisa Curcio Gaston had to leave early for a prior engagement, but Rear Commodore Laura Sigmond and Secretary Nancy Snyder helped present the awards.

The Old Guard was most honored by having the Flag attend.

After the presentation, Rick congratulated Peter and his crew Betsy Barrett and Greg Miarecki for a great race. He also observed that, since Peter was 10 years older, maybe he should have given him a 1 second per mile advantage – W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 ✶ Blinker 12

We have reached the end of another amazing sailing and boating season at our Belmont campus. It was a busy and rewarding season full of events and activities on and off the water. We hosted over 200 events for our members and guests, giving them many opportunities to enjoy and share their love for the water. Here are some of those highlights.

CHICAGO YACHT CLUB RACE TO MACKINAC

The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, the world’s oldest and longest annual freshwater sailing race, celebrated its 114th edition on July 21, 2023. A fleet of 240 boats raced across 333 miles from Chicago to Mackinac Island in 21 sections. We congratulate the winners of each division and thank them for their participation. We also appreciate the efforts of Sam Veilleux, the Race Chair, Jen Steffler, our PRO, and all the volunteers and staff who made this event possible. The winners of the four main divisions were: ✶ Albatross, a Solaris One 42 owned by Fernando Assens, won the Cruising Division ✶ McQueen, a J/88 owned by Justin Acker, won the Doublehanded Division ✶ Liquid Lounge II, a J/109 owned by Jim Caesar, won the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy Division ✶ Final Final, a Mills 41 owned by Jon Desmond, won the Mackinac Cup Division

CLUB 420 NATIONALS

From July 6 - 9, 2023, the Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station hosted the Club 420 Nationals, a four-day event that was part of the c420 Triple Crown Series. This series showcases the best c420 sailors in the country through three regattas. The c420 Nationals drew 113 boats and 226 sailors from all over the nation, who raced in seven races over three days. The sailors faced moderate and shifty winds, typical for Chicago in July, which challenged their endurance and skill. The event was led by Alex Abell, Kathy Barnard, and the Junior Activities Committee. The On-theWater Team was led by Darcy Cook and the Race Committee volunteers. We are grateful to the volunteers who answered the call to action and made this event possible.

J/70 NORTH AMERICANS

The J/70 North American Championship was hosted by CYC in September with 45 teams from eight countries competing on Lake Michigan. The lake offered diverse conditions for the four days of racing, challenging the sailors and the Race Committee to adapt to the changing wind and pressure. The championship had nine races in total with Savasana, owned

by Brian Keane, Weston MA, claiming the overall victory.

Congratulations to CYC Member Rich Witzel for his third place finish, and all the others from CYC who participated in the North American Championships: Laura Sigmond (First Place Mixed Plus Division), Steve Knoop, John Heaton, and James Prendergast. Special thanks to all of the volunteers who helped measure the boats, launch the boats and help be ambassadors of the sport. A special shout out to Eileen O'Neil and Claire O'Neill as our Co-chairs.

I have only highlighted a fraction of our on-the-water racing activities, but I cannot end this segment without a thank you to our Race Committee. The On-the-Water Team would like to express our sincere gratitude for your contribution to the success of all our events. Your dedication and professionalism as a Race Committee were essential for ensuring fair, safe, and fun racing for all of the participants.

You did an excellent job of managing the courses, signals, starts, finishes, and scoring in challenging and variable conditions. You also showed great enthusiasm and spirit, making the event fun and enjoyable for everyone. SAILING SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES

At the Sailing School, we have a team of amazing coaches who teach and train sailors of all ages from 5 to 80+. Our youth sailors start their sailing season in Chicago in midMarch, with our six high school, opti, and laser teams. In 2023, we had one of our best seasons ever, with around 500 students participating in the summer program. Many of them continue to sail throughout the year traveling to Florida or California for winter events.

Our Adult Programing starts in the spring with Crew U in early May. Once again this program was sold out in just a few weeks. Learn to Sail, Learn to Race, Corporate Team Building, WOW, and Competent Crew on our new J/145 are just a few of the programs CYC offers. GET READY FOR THE RACE TO MACKINAC

Yes, it’s winter in Chicago. The thermometers are reading below freezing, and there’s more ice on the ground than in our Dark & Stormies.

But in just a few months, Chicago’s harbors will again be abuzz with thousands of sailors preparing to take on the 115th edition of the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. They’ll be readying their boats, telling tall tales, and plotting their course up the lake - all vying to take home a flag and etch their name on one of our vaunted trophies.

The Race to Mackinac is more than a summer tradition, as the longest and most-venerated freshwater distance sailboat race in the world, it's an unmatched sailing experience.

So even though the area’s sailboats are all safely put away in winter storage, many Midwest sailors are cozied up in their yacht club thinking about their plans for 2024’s race.

They’re talking about what worked in 2023, and what they might adjust for 2024.

And at the Chicago Yacht Club, the Race to Mackinac Committee is doing the same. The Committee is assessing

the operations of recent races and planning on adjustments in four focus areas: Simplicity, Courtesy, Safety and Growth.

That could be simplifying language in the race requirements, or creating an ambassador program to help first-time Mac racers get up to speed on the race, or making it easier for seasoned sailors to participate.

There will be more information to come in the weeks ahead, but one thing certainly won’t change: this July, hundreds of boats and thousands of sailors will break lines from the shores of Chicago and head north past the Manitous and the Straits of Mackinac for the waters of Lake Huron and the chance to be honored as the winner of the 115th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. ✶

The club hosted the Chicago Regatta presented by Wintrust on September 9, 2023. The Chicago Regatta is the one of the largest on-the-water fundraisers on Lake Michigan. The Chicago Regatta provides opportunities for all fleets on the lake. We hosted sail racing, Dragon Force 65, and the Lighted Boat Display for cruising and power boats.

Patricia from SOS Children's Villages Illinois wins the Big Raffle grand prize of a 7-night Dream Yacht charter to the British Virgin Islands.

For the past 11 years, the Chicago Regatta has raised money for children’s charities of Chicago. This year we partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, SOS Children's Villages Illinois, and the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. Thank you to everyone who donated money, raised money through the leaderboard, and purchased raffle tickets. We raised over $120,000 for our three benfitting charities.

J/70 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

Chicago Yacht Club was home to the 2023 J/70 North American Championship in September, hosting 45 teams in an ultra-competitive fleet.

Completing nine races over four days, sailors waited for the Windy City to live up to its name with light and lumpy conditions the first two days of racing, increasing to moderate winds on days three and four. More than 75 volunteers made the regatta possible, tackling measurement, race committee, communications, meals, and organization behind the scenes.

Event Co-Chairs Eileen O’Neill Gioielli and Claire O’Neill rolled out the red carpet for sailors and welcomed teams to Belmont Station from Brazil, the U.K., Australia, Japan, Turkey, and Canada. With three days of inspections and practice, Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station transformed into the world stage for the J/70 competitors for the week.

“We’re so appreciative of everyone coming out for the event,” said Eileen O'Neill Gioielli, co-chair of the regatta.

“The sense of community that exists in the J/70 Fleet is palpable, and it was a lot of fun having such a friendly group of competitors. Hosting 45 boats over a week’s time takes an enormous amount of planning and volunteer hours from members and requires a lot of work by CYC staff. We are so grateful to the time and efforts of our members and staff.”

“The camaraderie amongst the teams made the event a great success” said Claire O’Neill, co-chair of the regatta.

“To see teams from all over the world come together to enjoy a sport we all love dearly was truly amazing.”

Roughly 10 years after its debut, the J/70 is arguably one of the most competitive classes in the United States and a circuit where Corinthian racers are regularly duking it out with many of the top professional sailors from around the world. The North American Championship drew some of sailing’s top talent, including several Olympians.

Numerous Chicago Yacht Club Members competed in the regatta, with some achieving division line honors. Laura Sigmond’s Norboy took the honor as the Mixed+ division winner, ending the regatta in 12th place. Hestia, helmed by James Murray, was the top team in the One-Pro division, and finished 26th overall.

Other CYC members also sailed into the top 10, including Rich Witzel’s Rowdy, which landed in 3rd and John Heaton’s Empeiria, which placed 6th overall.

In the end, it was Brian Keane and Team Savasana who were named 2023 J/70 North American Champions after nine races in Chicago. The team catapulted to an early lead during the week, securing three bullets out of the four races on day three. Those wins provided a healthy cushion heading into the last day. Keane, who hails from Beverly Yacht Club, has dominated the J/70 fleet this season and credited strong teamwork with Thomas Barrows, Conner Harding, and Ronald Weed to their success. ✶

Sailing has officially come to an end for the season.

Over the summer, I sailed Lasers and a little bit of 420s. I had my first regatta at the Great Lakes Championships. It was a tough regatta with the wind being dead on the first day and by the second day it was 25 knots. It was a good first regatta, and I want to say a special thanks to Tarkan Bolat for being an awesome coach to me and the team. I also participated in the CYC Halloween Regatta. It was very interesting with only one other sailor and myself, but we made the best of it.

I also had the opportunity to go to the Junior Olympics Try It Out Clinic. This was such an adventure with the 29er, Wazp, J/70, and foil boarding. My crew and I managed to sail the 29er together then we capsized towards the end.

Towards the beginning of fall season, I got the call to assist Alice Martin with the Junior Commodore’s Cup. Alice is one of my favorite people, so I was incredibly honored when she asked me to assist her in planning the event.

It was also an incredible experience being on her boat Painkiller. Her crew was very welcoming, especially Joel, and I can’t wait until I get to sail with them again.

There was an awards night following the Commodore's

Cup. It was very nice to see Alice again and all the winning juniors! They truly are a special group.

The dinner at the awards was absolutely amazing thanks to Chef Larry. I was able to see Oscar and Alana setting up their Halloween night for the kids. They had a very spooky set up. I am still kept awake at night. Alana and Oscar always do a phenomenal job with everything.

An enormous thank you to Ebru Bolat the Romanian Olympic sailor. She was kind enough to send me her Laser sail! It's so cool to have one of her sails with her country flag on it. Ebru truly is an amazing Olympian, mentor, and friend.

Many thanks to Kate O’Donnell and Hector Guzman. I came down November 14th for sailing photos and to my surprise the ramp at Belmont was gone, but Kate said we can launch off the north dock, which required heavy lifting of my boat Saint Lo. Kate and Hector got it done. Many thanks to Kate, from finding my gear when I lose it (yes, it happens) to helping move boats. Hector is the best 420 coach - I think in the world.

COMMODORE'S CUP

I had the privilege of participating in the Commodore's Cup - an amazing event that would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

Alice, one of my all-time favorite members, asked me to help plan the event, which I was very excited about.

The Commodore's Cup was undoubtedly a highlight of my summer. I learned a lot from the experienced sailors on Painkiller, and I hope that the other juniors had the same opportunity to expand their sailing knowledge.

With 60 junior sailors there, the excitement was very high.

The beautiful sunset over the city and the perfect wind added to the already high energy.

I am already looking forward to next year's Commodore's Cup and hope to see even more people participating.

The 2023 Commodore’s Cup Twilight Junior Navigation Race was more successful this year as demonstrated by attracting more offshore boats, more juniors, participation from more CASRA yacht clubs, easier access for registration, matching juniors to boats, and partying.

The Offshore Committee members, working with the CYC staff – in particular Chuck Nevel, Patrick Burks and Katie O’Donnell, orchestrated the recruiting, registration, actual race, and post-race party.

Awards to the six Juniors (a helmsperson and a navigator on each of the three winning boats) were presented at the Offshore Awards Dinner at CYC. The Commodore’s Cup trophy went to the first place boat. Gifts were donated by Crowley’s Yacht Yard: Boater’s Closet.

Thanks to advertising by CASRA, contacts at the various clubs, sailing schools, and offshore fleets, there was increased interest and enthusiasm for the event. The venue of Monroe Station provided ease of access of juniors to the boats and a good room for gathering before and after the event.

As a member of the Offshore Committee, I was pleased at the support of CASRA and of volunteers from member clubs.

It seems like an excellent opportunity to facilitate inter club cooperation and appreciation, in particular for introducing juniors to offshore racing on bigger boats compared to what most of them have trained on. Skippers have reported enjoying the race more than they ever expected! Postevent comments from participants suggest a bigger event next year.

Comments and suggestions for the 2024 race are being considered by the Offshore Committee. ✶

LOOKING BACK ON A YEAR OF INTERCLUB COMPETITION

2023 was a very fruitful year for Chicago Yacht Club’s Interclub Competition Committee and the sailors that represented CYC around the nation. Leading up to 2023, the committee was formed with the idea of competing on a larger scale than has ever been done before in Chicago Yacht Club history. We sat down and put a slate of events on the calendar that we thought was realistic, yet pushed the boundaries of what had been done before. In addition to the events, we gave a series of chalk talks explaining team racing to the uninitiated as well as hosting team racing practices on Tuesdays in the summer to stay fresh in the boats and spread the knowledge to other team members.

The practices turned out to be a big hit, and anecdotally it was the main draw for multiple members to join the Club that are now competing regularly with CYC. In addition to the many fleet racing and world class sailing that CYC has to offer, the Interclub Competition Committee wanted to replicate the college sailing model that a large chunk of us had learned under and work on building up the local talent base. On Tuesdays sailors of all skill levels learned how to team race as well as how to do bow, trim a spinnaker, and do enough gybes to make your head spin on the downwind. Team races are typically short but action packed, concentrating your sailing efforts into short 20 minute spurts. Even if you start in last, your teammates can help you out and bring you into the front of the race and finish with a win. It’s an exhilarating format preferred by many and gaining popularity at yacht clubs around the country.

As mentioned before, this is just the beginning. We hope to sail more events and eventually set our eyes on the Morgan Cup - the most prestigious trophy in all of Interclub Team Racing. Additionally, our friends at other yacht clubs are looking for opportunities to come out and race in Chicago when we are able to host an event. I look forward to another year and to teaching more members how to team race and share the love that we all have with the sport of sailing. ✶

CYC competed in events at Boston Yacht Club, New York Yacht Club, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, and Southern Yacht Club in addition to hosting our own local 2v2 team racing event at Belmont with all Chicago based teams. None of this would have been possible without the help of the CYC Competition Fund and Foundation, which we are constantly thankful for.

The highlight of the team racing season was winning the Seawanhaka Corinthian Young Guns Trophy, where all of the sailors have to be under 35. CYC went undefeated against teams from the east coast and abroad across the W I N T E R 2 0 2 3 ✶ Blinker 26

P OW E R F L E E T: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

One common misconception is that Power Fleet events are for power boating CYC members only. This is understandable given the Club bylaws requiring that the Power Fleet Committee itself be made up with Club members owning power boats. However, the Committee’s broader objective is to connect with all Club Members.

With that in mind, the Power Fleet has evolved over time to its present form of organizing and sponsoring the following four main categories of events that are open to all Club members.

GIVING BACK CRUISES

The heartbeat of the Power Fleet is the giving back cruises, which currently include the Special Needs Cruise, Boys & Girls Club Cruise, Youth Sight Impaired Cruise, Adult Sight Impaired Cruise, and Staff Appreciation Cruise. The first four of these cruises embody the Club’s mission while the fifth is an important extension of gratitude. Participation from all members is vital, not just with the volunteer boats, but also as chaperones, crew, and hands on deck for loading and unloading.

NAVIGATIONAL RALLIES

The Power Fleet runs eight Navigational Rallies (formerly known as Predicted Log or P-Log) events each season.

While each team needs a boat, the rallies can be run using power or sail boats under power, and each team can have multiple members. For example, the skipper might be the member owning the boat but the navigator or others on the boat are spouses, other Club Members, or just friends and family. The rallies are a great reason to spend the day out on the water enjoying the incredible Chicago skyline.

All Club Members are encouraged to “ride along” during Contest #1 on May 18th this year to see firsthand what the rallies are all about.

DESTINATION CRUISES

The Power Fleet destination cruises embody the boating beyond the playpen ethos. Two weekend cruises are organized to ports like Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee, Saugatuck, and South Haven ,and one extended seven-day cruise travels to ports further north on both the Wisconsin and Michigan sides of the Lake. Since these cruises include group dinners, private tours, dingy rides, and other organized activities, all Club Members are invited to join by land as well.

PARTIES AND HAPPY HOURS

The Power Fleet is known for hosting an End of Season Dock Party, the always festive Holiday Party, and at least two late winter educational happy hours.

With all of the above that the Power Fleet brings to the Club, the Power Fleet events are a great way for every Club Member, especially newcomers, to get involved, meet other members, and enjoy more time at the Club off and on the water. The Associates’ Committee had a busy and successful 2023 working hard to balance our objectives of bringing exciting events to the club and connecting Chicago Yacht Club’s Associate members.

At the start of 2023, the new Associates Committee Chairs were elected beginning their two year term. Over 40 new associate members have joined Chicago Yacht Club since January 2023. The main goal of the Associates Committee is to foster relationships with younger members, as well as to support and further grow the club through participation at other Club events.

To start the year, the CYC Associates hosted the Annual Pink Pony Party at Monroe Station. Both Club Members and local sailors are invited to this great party that celebrates six months to Mac. The Associates are busy planning the 2024 Pink Pony Party – so grab your pink attire, invite your friends, and join us for a great night at Monroe Station next February.

As supporters of the Belmont 2.0 project, the Associates launched a YETI mug campaign for members to purchase personalized mugs with the CYC Burgee. Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit Belmont 2.0. and was able to raise over $8,500 this year. These mugs can be seen above the bar at Belmont Station and are a great reminder of the future of the club. Please be on the lookout for this continued campaign.

During the summer, the Associates were focused on SUPs and Suds – weekend meetups that focused on utilizing the Club’s on-the-water assets. These were opportunities for Associates to meet for a day on-the-water and enjoy the company of other members.

2023 was also a special year as our very own Belmont Station turned 100! To celebrate, the Associates hosted the Belmont Speakeasy Soirée. Attendees dressed in their best Gatsby-inspired attire, with curated drinks and dancing for a full evening. There were even some surprise performances for all attendees and an opportunity to celebrate one club, two stations.

In November, the Associate Committee held the first Associate Annual Meeting, focusing on bringing the

Associate members of the Club together to reflect on the previous year and gather feedback for future activities and events. Over 25 Associate Members were in attendance and were able to provide feedback and ways to get more involved in the Club for 2024. The Associate Annual Meeting was a huge success. If you missed it, all other Associate Committee meetings are generally the first Tuesday or Wednesday of each month and can be found on the club calendar and are open to all Associate Members.

To close the year, the Associates are hosting Thursday Night Football in the Mac Bar. This is an informal networking event that allows Associate Members (and Non-Associate Members who would like to participate) a chance to mingle with other members regularly. These events are expected to continue for the remainder of the 2023 season and are already scheduled on the club calendar for 2024.

Looking ahead to 2024, the Associates are busy planning for a full calendar of events. We look forward to seeing you at one of the Associate hosted events during 2024.

In addition to those events that are hosted by the Associates Committee, a continued focus for 2024 is to partner with other committees to collaborate on programming and the return of some old traditions. THE WIZARD OF ZENDA COMES TO MONROE

The Chicago Yacht Club hosted the Quicklier Film Partners screening of Melges, The Wizard of Zenda in front of a receptive, sold out audience, as the movie has come full circle in many ways by coming to where Gloria and Harry C "Buddy" Melges Jr began their life's adventure together.

On what was a beautiful Chicago evening, Club Members were treated to a very nostalgic presentation of one of the great American sailors of all time, who in addition to that, is one of "our" own!

But more importantly, it wasn't how victory was achieved, it was the way, with Buddy's selflessness, team-first attitude, that made that career capping achievement even more memorable.

Film Producer Anne Peterson and Director Mark Honer were on hand to add thoughtful and heartfelt comments and commentary to the event, which has traveled around the country to different Yacht Club's since earlier this year and will continue into the next.

It was a special evening in the Monroe Station that was brought together by the hard work of many, including Rear Commodore Laura Sigmond and Club Historian/Librarian Betsy Barrett. ✶

The film delves into Melges's beginnings as a young sailor growing up on the shores of Lake Geneva in Wisconsin in the shadow of his boat building father's business to his early success in the Mallory Cup and onto Olympic glory in Tokyo with a Silver in 1964 and then Gold in Germany during the fateful 1972 Games.

There are brief moments of his Heart of America campaign, launched here in Chicago, with footage of the infamous Maple Leaf Cup against Canada 2 on the snowy shores off Cape Flattery, Thanksgiving Weekend in the Straits of Juan de Fuca in Washington State.

On hand were HoA Syndicate Members Ernie Summers and Nancy Sindelar, as well as sailor and sailmaker Ritchie Stearns who all added interesting and somewhat humorous takes on that legendary campaign.

Stearns little antidote on Buddy's obsession with weight on the boat was highlighted when, in-between Round Robins while in Fremantle, Western Australia he directed the crew to snap off the tops of the bolts 31

The film's emphasis was on Buddy finally capturing an America's Cup victory, which is the pinnacle of our sport with Bill Koch's America 3 Campaign in 1992.

Congratulations to Chicago Yacht Club members Maggie Shea and Stephanie Roble, who recently took Bronze in the sailing competition at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile! Team Roble/Shea competed against a field of five other two-person teams racing in 49erFX skiffs, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and Peru.

Launched earlier this year, the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation Competition Fund granted their largest award to date to Team Roble/Shea Sailing, who are “going for more in Paris 2024!” Since competing in the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, Team Roble/Shea has continued their quest for Olympic hardware by competing in such events as the Lanzarote International Regatta, where they reached the podium at third place; and the 49erFX World Championships in The Hague, Netherlands where they secured a berth for a yet-to-be-determined U.S. team in Paris. Just prior to competing in Chile, they earned fourth place at the Olympic Test Event in Marseille — the same venue where they aim to compete for Paris 2024.

“The Chicago Yacht Club Foundation's Competition Fund and the generous donors of the CYC community have made it possible for us to compete all over the world in pursuit of

our Olympic dream,” says Maggie Shea. “We were proud to represent CYC at the Tokyo 202One Olympics and are grateful for their continued support in our campaign for Paris 2024!”

Amidst their non-stop competition schedule that takes them around the globe, Team Roble/Shea recently made time for a trip back to Chicago Yacht Club to share with Competition Fund donors about their path to the 2024 Olympics at the Foundation’s first dedicated fundraiser for the Competition Fund - A Night to Inspire. During their time in Chicago, Team Roble/Shea also engaged in community outreach by sharing their journey with Chicago youth, including those from Union League Boys and Girls Clubs, the U.S. Coast Guard JROTC program at ASPIRA Business & Finance High School, and Chicago-area junior sailors.

You can support grant recipients like Team Roble/Shea by making a tax-deductible donation on the Foundation’s website. All donations go directly towards grants to help support Chicago sailors at the highest level of competitive sailing.

Team Roble/Shea has a busy winter ahead with scheduled training in Portugal and Spain. Come March, the team will be competing in the 49erFX World Championship (in Lanzarote), and then in April the next event is the Princess Sofia Trophy (in Palma). The best combined scores of these events will determine which 49erFX team will compete at the Paris 2024 Games in Marseille. As 2023 draws to a close, so does the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation’s Annual Appeal. As of the time of this writing, we’re just launching the campaign; we hope CYC Members have been inspired by the weekly program profiles we’ve been sharing in Dock Lines! You should have received our 2023 Impact Report in the mail; it is also available online at chicagoyachtclubfoundation.org/about.

We achieved enormous growth in the number of children served, programs implemented, and community partner collaborations in 2023, but we’re not done.

The support we receive in 2023 enables us to plan robust programming for 2024 and the future. Just look at what donations of various sizes can enable! Our 2024 goals are ambitious:

1. Double the number of community sailing camps offered through the Chicago Yacht Club Sailing School.

2. Double the number of after school educational programs offered to Chicagoland youth.

3. Triple the number of youth involved in the Foundation’s swimming education programs.

4. Start at least two new high school sailing teams from schools in underserved communities.

5. Work with the Club to bring sailing education to Monroe Harbor, so that we may better serve youth living on the south and west sides of Chicago.

6. Increase the total number of youth served by 50 percent.

Our campaign goals aren't necessarily as ambitious as our service goals. We seek to raise $300,000 – by far the largest goal in Foundation history. We are extraordinarily grateful to a group of generous donors who committed $125,000 in matching funds for donations received in the fourth quarter.
