There is a special feeling this time of year, when anticipation turns into action and the Club comes into its own, settling into its natural rhythm.
You can sense the energy of the Club shifting as the boats return, the docks come to life and a new season approaches.
Whether you are on the water or spending time at Belmont or Monroe, CYC is in full motion. From boating education, watercraft rentals and convenient docking to regattas, navigation rallies, cruises and a full calendar of social events, there is truly something for everyone. With marquee events on the horizon, we look forward to gathering and celebrating the season together.
Building on the momentum of our 150th Anniversary programming, we will once again offer access to learn, connect and be part of the life at CYC. The new On-the-Water Showcase on April 29 complements our Nautical Education Series, which is designed to support both new and experienced boaters alike.
The Club has remained vibrant throughout the off-season. From Chef Larry’s in-kitchen dining experiences and the winter wine and spirits series, to special member events, such as the introduction of Dinner with the General Manager on April 8—a new opportunity for members to connect in a more personal and relaxed setting—there are more ways than ever to enjoy the Club year-round. The Women’s Committee continues to offer exceptional programming with the celebration of International Women’s Day, the Citywide WOW Afternoon Tea on April 12 and the Annual Ladies’ Luncheon on May 8. Family programming has also remained strong with the return of the Kids Zone and Movie Night. This issue of the Blinker will guide you through the months ahead. Inside, you’ll find a preview of the upcoming season, from early-season activities to regattas, cruises, and fleet events to a variety of social events. Our traditions remain at the heart of our Club, marking the official start of the season. We will return to the original formats with the Flag Raising Ceremony on Memorial Day, followed by the Fleet Review on Sunday, June 28.
The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust is quickly approaching, marking its 117th running. The Warning Gun Party will be held on July 9, followed by the Cruising and Racing Fleets starts. Whether you are competing or celebrating on Mackinac Island, signature events such as the Porch Party and the Sailors Celebration make this one of the most memorable weeks of the year. The following week brings the Lighted Boat Parade on July 18—a member favorite not to be missed. Be sure to enter your boat and take part in this festive tradition.
Looking ahead to August, the Grand Slam, the Verve Cup Offshore and Inshore, Power Fleet Navigation Rallies, and the Women’s Offshore Challenge round out the summer season on the water.
I encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to experience all that Chicago Yacht Club has to offer. Introduce them to the Club, bring them to an event, and help share what makes our community so special.

As we look ahead to the 2026 season, there’s a renewed sense of excitement building across the Club. While the start of the year has been a bit more measured on the membership front, the pipeline is active, engagement is strong, and we are seeing a steady wave of Prospective Members navigating their way through the enrollment process.
What’s particularly encouraging is the continued enthusiasm around sailing and on-the-water participation—both within our Club and across the broader sailing community. Nationally, interest in recreational boating and sailing remains strong, with more individuals seeking hands-on experiences, racing opportunities, and community-driven clubs like Chicago Yacht Club. Here at the Club, we’re seeing that same trend reflected in growing interest in Spring Frostbite Sailing, Crew U, Women on the Water, and our Learn to Sail programming as we head into the season.
We’ve already welcomed several New Members this year, and we look forward to introducing many more in the coming months. Their energy and eagerness to get involved—especially on the water—continues to reinforce what makes CYC such a special place.
Our first New Member Orientation of the season will take place on Saturday, May 2 at Belmont Station, followed by our highly anticipated Kentucky Derby Belmont Opener that evening. As the season gets underway, summer at the Club is shaping up to be incredibly active, and as lively as you make it. From our world-class Race Committee hosting some of the best regattas anywhere to expanded training opportunities and inclusive programming for all skill levels, there is truly something for everyone on the water. Our regatta calendar remains the backbone of the summer. Signature events like the 117th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust, the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series, and the Verve Cup Offshore and Inshore continue to draw top talent from across the region and reinforce the Club’s reputation as the premier racing venue on Lake Michigan. These events not only showcase high-level competition, but also create energy and excitement throughout the membership.
Youth Sailing is once again at the heart of the summer. With a full lineup of programs ranging from introductory classes to advanced racing pathways, the Sailing School provides a fun, safe, and structured environment for young sailors to grow. Whether it is a first time on the water or a step toward competitive racing, our programs develop confidence and skills that last well beyond the season.
For adults, the opportunities to get involved have never been stronger. From Adult Learn to Sail and Performance Sailing to stepping into more competitive fleets, members can easily find their place on the water. Our new J/70 summer sailing program marks an exciting step in rebuilding the local J/70 scene and serves as a centerpiece for those looking to sharpen their skills in a high-performance, teamoriented environment. Crew U continues to offer a clear and welcoming pathway for newer sailors to get connected and involved in racing. The Power Fleet again will host its annual series of five navigation rallies, beginning with the Shakedown Cruise to Racine in June culminating with the competition for the Giovan Trophy in August.
We are also continuing to expand our Women on the Water (WOW) programming, creating more opportunities for women to build confidence, develop skills, and connect in a supportive and engaging setting. With both WOW Social
and WOW Learn to Sail tracks, participants can choose their own path, including the opportunity to earn a US Sailing Keelboat Certification.
Beyond structured programming, access to the water has never been easier. Members and their guests can take advantage of rentals including paddleboards, kayaks, Sonars, and the Sea Ray. It is perfect for everything from a casual outing to a spontaneous day on the lake.
New this year, we are excited to introduce expanded programming aboard the J/145. These sessions offer a unique opportunity to experience big-boat sailing in a hands-on, practical setting. They help bridge the gap between learning and real-world application.
You will also notice some new faces around the Club this summer, along with many familiar ones returning for another season. We encourage you to stop by, introduce yourself, and get to know the team.
Being part of the Club is all about participation, whether you are racing offshore, learning to sail for the first time, or simply enjoying time on the water with friends and family. To close, here is a challenge. Set a goal for how many days you want to be on the water this summer. Five, 10, 20, or even 100. That is what a summer at Chicago Yacht Club is all about. Building momentum, making memories, and getting out on the water together.✶
2026 marks my fourth season as Regatta Manager at CYC, where I help keep racing safe, fair, and fun. I grew up on the water and discovered sailboat racing in college, later turning a passion for race management into a career at Oakcliff Sailing. I gained experience across disciplines and found my niche in race management and match racing umpiring, earning my appointment as a World Sailing International Umpire. Outside of CYC, I serve on US Sailing committees and train umpires around the world.
I recently joined Chicago Yacht Club, relocating from New England to help grow the keelboat program and get more sailors on the water. I grew up sailing with my grandfather and at Cape Cod Sea Camps, later racing 420s and a range of keelboats from J/111s to classic schooners. I’ve coached at all levels and enjoy using video and drone tech to help sailors improve. Off the water, I cheer on the Blackhawks, work on my golf game, and explore new food and culture.
I joined the CYC On-the-Water Team in 2023 after starting with the Rickover Naval Academy Sailing Team through the CYC Foundation, where I developed a passion for life on the water. I turned that into a career coaching, running sailing beaches, and mentoring fellow sailors. At CYC, every day feels like a PhD in fixing things—whether going aloft, crawling into bilges, or getting greasy solving problems. Off the water, I enjoy hiking, camping, canoeing, and crafts like leatherwork and woodworking.
I’ve been coaching at Chicago Yacht Club for the past year, helping sailors grow on and off the water. I started sailing young in Spain and raced in multiple classes before transitioning to coaching, working with youth sailors internationally and building competitive programs in the U.S. and abroad. I love helping sailors develop skill, confidence, teamwork, and leadership, and find it rewarding to watch them succeed. I bring energy, structure, and passion to the program, and enjoy travel, the outdoors, and new cultures.
I joined Chicago Yacht Club in March 2025, focused on building a competitive, supportive environment through structured training and top-level racing opportunities. I started sailing at Florida State University, serving as Race Team Captain, and later competed in Etchells, J/24, and J/70 classes. I’m also an apprenticed sailmaker and USCG Master 100 Ton Captain. I’m passionate about helping sailors grow—whether reaching the podium or overcoming challenges. Outside of sailing, I enjoy filmmaking and photography.
I oversee dock operations and help ensure events run smoothly and safely. In the winter, I support the CYC fleet in our warehouse. I started as a dockhand at Monroe and grew into my role by studying the sailing school curriculum and learning as much as possible. I enjoy being on the water, helping members, and leading a team on the docks. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time at home with family and playing video games.

As the ice thaws on Lake Michigan, the surest way to warm a sailor’s heart is the countdown to the 117th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust.
Over generations, the largest annual offshore sailboat race in the world has become a crown jewel of global sailboat racing. With registration already open and over 250 boats already entered, 2026 promises to build on the great history of this race.
“What makes this race special is that our tradition of our race reaches back generations, but each year is different,” said Kevin Foote, Chair of the 2026 Race. “Two years ago, we had one of the fastest races in history and the monohull record was broken. Last year, nearly 300 boats competed in a tactical thriller with unpredictable conditions.”
As the Race to Mac nears, sailors from around the world are building plans and looking forward to the 333-mile passage from Chicago’s skyline at the southern end of Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island and the northern waters of Lake Huron.
Along the way, racers will enjoy 360-degree views of water, starlit skies under sail, the Manitou Passage, and the Mighty Mac. The experiences they have and the memories they make will last a lifetime.
In 2026, the Chicago Yacht Club is aiming to build on the race’s commitment to expanding access and growing participation with the introduction of the new Mixed-Plus awards, given to the top-performing team in each division whose crew has a qualifying percentage of women and/or youth sailors under age 18.
This new award underscores Chicago Yacht Club’s longterm investment in developing a larger, more inclusive, and future-focused offshore sailing community—one that welcomes both new competitors and the next generation of sailors to the Mac Race starting line.
Similarly, the 2026 race will continue to welcome and celebrate inaugural entries—an important and growing group within the Mac Race community. The Race to Mackinac is proud of its strong reputation among first-time offshore teams, and organizers believe it’s an ideal experience for newcomers. All inaugural entries will compete for the Mark H. Baxter Trophy, awarded to the fastest inaugural entry, and will receive a $150 registration discount.
“Growing the race and growing the sport are the responsibility of Chicago Yacht Club as the organizer, and of every sailor on the line,” said Kevin Foote. “We will continue to focus on that in 2026 and beyond.” ✶

The Power Fleet is gearing up for an exciting and actionpacked season on the water, with a full calendar of events designed to bring members together all summer long. From social cruises to community outreach and friendly competition, this year offers something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned boater or looking to try something new.
The season kicks off June 5–7 with the highly anticipated Shakedown Cruise. While we cruise up to Racine, Wisconsin, we will host Navigation Rallies #1 and #2 of the season.
Navigation Rallies are not about speed, but about precision and teamwork. Powerboats and sailboats running under power can compete, and we welcome anyone who is interested to learn more to join us for ride along. Crews work together to predict down to the second how long it will take to travel between designated points based on a pre-specified cruising speed. Please reach out to the Power Fleet Committee if you're looking to get involved or learn more.
Throughout the summer, members can get involved with a variety of meaningful outreach cruises, including the Developmental Diversity Cruise on June 16, the Boys & Girls Club Cruise on June 23, and youth and adult cruises with the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind on July 14 and August 18. These experiences highlight Chicago Yacht Club’s commitment to giving back to the city of Chicago and sharing the joy of boating.
One of the season’s standout traditions, the Annual Cruise to South Haven, Michigan from July 31 to August 2, promises a memorable weekend of camaraderie, relaxation, and scenic cruising. Additional highlights include the Staff Appreciation Cruise on August 10 and the Cookie Merens Dock Party and final Navigation Rally on August 29.

Excitement is building here in the Cruising Sail Fleet. We’re gearing up for a summer filled with sailing, social events, and unforgettable days on Lake Michigan. Co-chairs Billy Oakes and I–along with our dedicated committee–have been hard at work crafting a fun, engaging lineup for sailors of all stripes.
We kicked off the season with Cruisin’ for a Brewsin’ on Friday, March 27. The evening featured a beer tasting from Dovetail Brewery, and members enjoyed samples of three distinctive brews, perfectly paired snacks, and, of course, plenty of great camaraderie.
We’re teaming up with the Power Fleet for Whatever Floats Your Boat, a Memorial Day weekend dock party you won’t want to miss. Expect a lively atmosphere with opportunities to mingle, tour boats, meet new faces, and celebrate the start of summer. Stay tuned—more details to follow!
Organized cruises will once again take us to favorite destinations–and maybe a few new ones too.
Feeling lucky? Join us for a mid-summer outing to Hammond, complete with a stop at the Horseshoe Casino. We’re also bringing back a game-style event with a new twist. Inspired by last year’s popular Take Your Best Shot excursion, this season’s sail is titled Catch Me If You Can. Count on some friendly competition, intrigue, and plenty of laughs.
In addition, we’ll once again partner with the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation for a social outreach cruise and the venerable Bilge Auction, which, thanks to your generosity, was a tremendous success in 2025.

Looking back, time has gone by so fast. It was my first season as president of my high school sailing club and captain of the team. I wanted to do something that would set our club apart, so I entered my Laser sailboat in the Lyons Township High School Homecoming Parade, carnival, and at many other school events to promote the sailing club and connect with more students. Go Lyons! I’m grateful to Rich and Max for helping me move my boat each time.
By January 1, we arrived in Fort Lauderdale. It was nice to be back at Lauderdale Yacht Sailing Club, where I was welcomed back by many familiar faces and coaches. It has been amazing to train again with US Sailing Coach of the Year Erik Bowers! We had a windy day where we couldn’t sail, and Erik still made the most of it. He taught me how
to check the rake on my boat, and we measured different spars and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different rakes and rigging setups. This season, I was only able to attend one regatta. At Midwinters, I was able to reconnect with friends and make new ones. We had some challenging conditions, with one day of no racing, but I had a ton of fun.
During my time in Florida, I also visited a handful of sailing colleges, including the University of Florida, the University of Miami, and Nova Southeastern University. Each visit has given me a better sense of what I’m looking for in a college, both academically and athletically. As I begin narrowing down my options, it’s exciting to start picturing what the next chapter of my life could look like.
In mid-February, I flew home alone to say goodbye to my first pet that was truly my own—my guinea pig, Batman. He had the sweetest personality, and getting to love him was a great gift. He brought so much light into our lives, especially after we lost our first dog, Winnie, who my first boat is named after—a name that many people in sailing know is meaningful to me. When Batman passed away, I realized it had also been a year since my Aunt Sue passed away. Both of them left a lasting impact on my life, and remembering them together made me reflect on how much love and support they each gave me in different ways. I’m really grateful to our friends Mike and Mona, who took great care of Batman while we were in Florida each winter. I also can’t forget to thank my best friend, Lola, for staying at my house with me when I didn’t want to be home alone, and for always being supportive of my sailing and flying—even if she has no idea what I’m talking about half the time. She still listens and pretends to understand sailing terms.
Now for my favorite part of each article: the learning lesson, or as my dad likes to say, “sharpening of the saw.” This season reinforced how important it is to take initiative in life and pay attention to the details, no matter how small. A dream without action is only a dream, and it’s the small steps that turn ideas into reality. Not everyone will understand the path you’re on, and that’s something you have to accept. What matters most is continuing to move forward, trusting
yourself, and choosing quality over quantity. I learned a valuable lesson from a new friend I met while talking about sailing. Rocky, a lifelong rugby player and coach from Maine, counseled me that once you make an important life decision, you have to move forward without secondguessing yourself, knowing you made the best choice with the information you had at the time.
I look forward to returning home at the end of May. I hope everyone has a strong and safe start to the spring season in Chicago, or wherever the first event of the season may be. As always, that’s just the way I sea it. ✶

This year the Associates Regatta joins forces with the legendary energy of Verve Cup Inshore. The result? Competitive racing by day and an electric scene at Belmont Station by night. Think sails up, music up, and a party that won’t end at sunset.
Whether you’re racing hard or just here for the dockside debauchery, the Associates Regatta is the place to be. Crew spots, spectator spots, and dance floor spots are all open.

If you’ve never seen fully grown sailors attempt tactical maneuvers in boats designed for children, you are missing out on one of the Club’s premier spectator sports. It’s competitive. It’s humbling. It’s deeply unserious in the best possible way.
Thunderhead is back!
A revamped missed tradition, Thunderhead will serve as our official kickoff to Fall Frostbite Racing. As the breeze sharpens and the air cools, we lean into what makes this Club special—sailors who refuse to let the summer end.
It’s grit. It’s camaraderie. It’s a reminder that some of the best racing happens when common sense says you should stay home.
Thunderhead isn’t just an event, it’s a statement.
When the boats are hauled and the lake goes steel gray, we’re not hibernating. We’re stepping up and clearing the Club’s cellars.
This night has one noble, urgent mission: help the Club make room by drinking the bottles coming off the menu. These are the last-of-their-kind, the end-of-vintage heroes, the unsung cellar dwellers that deserve a proper sendoff.
Last year, 66 bottles were heroically consumed. 66 This year? We beat it.
This is not enjoying your go-to-red. This is about rallying together, circling the tables at Monroe or Belmont (location forthcoming), and doing our part for inventory turnover. No tasting notes required. No snobbery allowed. Just members with glasses in hand, comparing favorites and going back for “one more pour, for the cause.”
It’s charitable work, really.
This energy isn’t just for Associates. This is a Club-wide invitation.
Regular Members. Associates. Veterans. Racers. Cruisers. Power Boaters. Committee heroes. Social legends. If you love this place, or want to love it more, these events are for you.
The best moments at CYC rarely happen because everything went exactly to plan. They happen because you said yes. Because you showed up. Because you thought, “Why not?”
Show up for the shenanigans. Crew a boat you’ve never been on. Wear the ridiculous shirt. Race the Opti. Help us empty the cellar. Stay late.
This year the Club will be more alive than ever. The dock will feel louder and the tent will be fuller.
Our Club is at its best when we show up, dive in, and make the magic happen.

I am honored to serve as Chair of CYC Women for the 2026 season. As a practicing optometrist and lifelong boating enthusiast, I am proud to be part of the Chicago Yacht Club community. My family—Jeff and Liam McClimans—and I have been members of the Providence crew since 2004.
CYC Women is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, connected, and engaging community that supports and celebrates women throughout the Chicago Yacht Club. We honor our history by building meaningful relationships, supporting participation at all levels of boating, and offering programs that promote confidence, wellness, creativity, and lifelong involvement—both on and off the water.
Our legacy events have been refreshed as CYC Women Connection, designed to bring members together through social, artistic, and educational experiences. Guided by our committee—Betsy Ivancsits, Molly Bowater, Charlotte Master, Jennifer Brand, Francesca Sigmond, Greer Madole and past chair, Rose Mills—these events will include
activities such as crafting, cooking, food and wine pairing, storytelling, and on the water experiences. Each gathering will also include club updates and opportunities to connect over food and cocktails.
We are pleased to launch Anchored in Wellness, a program focused on self-care and education to support women’s health across all life stages. Each event features a 40-minute, all-level movement session, followed by a healthy breakfast and smoothie-making, and concludes with an interactive discussion led by a healthcare professional on a topic relevant to women’s health and well-being.
Our Women on the Water (WOW) programming, led by Sonja Veilleux, continues to be the club’s most welcoming on-the-water entry point. Friday evenings are designed to build confidence and camaraderie through safe, supportive sailing experiences with peer coaching from experienced skippers. Members may also pursue formal certification through the Women’s Learn to Sail Program. Building on last year’s success, we are excited to host the second Women’s Offshore Challenge at the end of the summer.
Finally, we will host several signature events throughout the year. These include our recent celebration of International Women’s Day featuring CYC leadership and guest speaker Janet Baxter, which drew strong participation and inspired continued engagement. On April 12, we will host the inaugural Chicagoland Women on the Water Afternoon Tea, bringing together women from across the regional boating community. We also look forward to our Spring Luncheon and Showcase, Chic Meets Ship, featuring a guest speaker from the Chicago Maritime Museum, professional headshots, and a nautical-themed marketplace to kick off the boating season. ✶

Thanks to the generosity of the Chicago Yacht Club community, 2026 is poised to be a banner year for the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. Programming is expanding both on and off the water, with a greater focus on long-term outcomes, including leadership, college readiness, and workforce development. CYCF’s fleet will expand to include a third J/100 at Monroe, while a new camp at 31st Street Harbor will pair swimming with sailing instruction. Together, these efforts will help more youth from underrepresented communities gain access to the water and build skills and confidence.
Six weeks of camp at 31st Street Harbor will serve youth from existing and new community partner organizations, including Big Shoulders, Girls in the Game, Girls Inc., Horizons for Youth, and St. Ann School. By combining sailing and swimming instruction at a single location, the program will be more geographically convenient for youth from South Side neighborhoods. The program builds on CYCF’s collaboration with the Jackson Park Yacht Club Sailing School and the Chicago Park District, which is providing J/22 sailboats.
Focused on mentoring, academic support, and college and career readiness, this new initiative expands CYCF’s support for high school–aged youth as they prepare for postsecondary pathways. Generously funded by the Dr. Arthur J. Atkinson Family Foundation, the program connects sailing with personal growth and professional development in more intentional ways.
The inaugural year will include two student cohorts. Girls Inc. of Chicago participants will take part in a weeklong learn-to-sail camp at CYC Monroe aboard CYCF’s J/100s, followed by career-readiness workshops throughout the summer and fall. A second cohort from Intrinsic High School will begin with on-site sailing and STEM workshops before progressing onto the water to learn not only how to sail the J/100s but how to race them.
Building on the InSPIRE Scholarship Fund, the program expands CYCF’s ability to support students through financial resources and sustained guidance as they prepare for what comes next.
One of CYCF’s most popular programs, this weeklong camp introduces youth to sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and swimming in a welcoming, low-pressure setting. For many participants, it is their first time on Lake Michigan. The camp is designed to make Lake Michigan feel approachable, enjoyable, and safe while giving young people the chance to try a range of water-based activities. For many, it is the beginning of a longer connection to CYCF and a first step toward sailing school, swimming lessons, or other summer programs.
Monroe Harbor will again welcome a strong group of returning participants this summer. In 2025, its camps served 200 youth. This year, more than 50 students plan to continue in sailing school, and some will be back for their fourth summer. That rate of return shows CYCF is doing more than introducing young people to boating. It is creating programs that keep them engaged as their skills and confidence grow.

One of CYCF’s longest-running programs, this five-day offshore voyage offers a small cohort of young women an immersive, transformative experience that challenges them to step outside their comfort zones. In partnership with the
Inland Seas Education Association, nine participants will sail aboard the 77-foot Inland Seas in a program that integrates sailing, teamwork, navigation, and Great Lakes ecology. Life aboard a tall ship requires focus, collaboration, and real responsibility.
Nearly 700 participants took part in CYCF swim programs across the city in 2025, building comfort in the water and developing essential safety skills. Many new swimmers will set sail this summer for the first time. These programs are a key part of how CYCF introduces young people to the water and helps them build a lasting connection to Lake Michigan.
CYCF will continue to support Judd’s Camp, a program for youth with physical disabilities led by the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation. Many participants are returning for their second summer after completing eight weeks of training last year. The program brings together partners including the Chicago Lighthouse, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN).
Sailing school scholarships are an important part of CYCF’s longer-term approach. While many CYCF camps introduce participants to the sport through immersive, firsttime experiences, these scholarships provide a bridge to continued skill development and deeper engagement in the boating community.
In 2025, CYCF awarded 54 sailing education scholarships totaling $64,381. This year, the Foundation is especially excited to see dozens of youth who first experienced boating through CYCF programs returning for their second, third, and even fourth year of sailing school.
In 2025, more than 3,300 youth connected with Lake Michigan through CYCF programs. In participant surveys, 87 percent said they wanted to move up a level and learn more about sailing, a strong sign that these programs are opening the door to continued growth. More young people are returning and advancing from one summer to the next. Through new programs and strong support for returning participants, our 2026 season will reflect CYCF’s continued investment in the communities we serve. ✶
