PROFILE
A STUDY OF CORPORATE DIVERSITY IN THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AREA Chicago’s top 50 companies (2013 revenue) show: • Minorities hold 12% of the 551 board of director positions at the 50 firms, a number flat since 2012
• The inaugural 21 committed corporations reported spending an aggregate total of over $350 million in 2014 with selected MBEs, an 82% increase over the numbers they reported in 2008, the first year of the program • These MBEs increased their staffing levels to support their contracts and the subsequent economic activity further enhanced employment • Job creation was measured by the University of Illinois for the early adopters of the program. Total job creation measured by the program grew from 1,955 in 2009 to 4,781 jobs in 2014
• 11 of the 50 firms, or 22%, have no ethnic diversity on their boards, 2 more than in 2012 • Minorities hold 10% of the 660 executive positions at the top 50 firms. Of those, Asians hold 4%, African Americans, 3%, and Hispanics, 3% • 17 the 50 firms have zero ethnic diversity in their executive ranks • The current rate of increase in representation on boards and in executive level management indicates that it will take 64 years for all minorities to reach parity
• Over the last 12 years, Business Leaders of Color showcased nearly 320 board-ready candidates in biennial publications • These men and women have rendered service in over 215 corporate directorships
