Welcome to the 10th Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and 45th Anniversary Gala

November 19, 2013 Dear Colleagues: Welcome to Chicago United’s 10th Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and 45th Anniversary Gala. As a founding member of Chicago United and a torchbearer for its mission, this 45th Anniversary is a very special event for ComEd. Tonight, we honor our past by thanking Chicago United for its inspirational call to leadership and by focusing squarely on the future. In that regard, I am delighted to join Chicago United and all tonight’s sponsors and guests in honoring our friend and colleague, Don Thompson, president and CEO, McDonald’s Corporation as the 2013 Bridge Award Recipient. Don has been a steadfast steward of promoting the values of diversity and inclusion across McDonald’s and beyond and is a leader for the future. Don, in the mold of the Chicago United mission, recognizes that an enterprise-wide commitment to diversity is key to building a strong corporate mission because the business case for creativity and innovation is irrefutable and it generates positive impact for employees, consumers and shareholders alike. On behalf of ComEd, we salute Chicago United on 45 years of groundbreaking accomplishments. We also congratulate and thank Chicago United President Gloria Castillo for her stellar leadership. We are proud of our heritage and past as a founding member of Chicago United and look forward to a future advancing the cause that began more than four decades ago. Sincerely,

Anne R. Pramaggiore President and CEO

November 19, 2013 Dear Conference Participants, Welcome to the 10th Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and our 45th Anniversary Gala. All of us at Chicago United are pleased that you are joining us as we mark this very special anniversary. Chicago United certainly has met the test of time from its beginnings during one of the worst periods in our city’s history, to today. Since 1968, this organization has been an integral part of the fabric of Chicago, helping our city to conquer great social and economic challenges. There is, of course, much work to do. While it is valuable to reflect on where we have been and what has been accomplished, we must not lose sight of where we must yet go and what we must yet achieve. Our community is so fortunate to have people, like our 2013 Bridge Award recipient Don Thompson, president and CEO of McDonalds, and the 2013 Business Leaders of Color to advance the complementary goals of inclusion and economic progress. Congratulations to Don and the 2013 Business Leaders of Color. Finally, I hope this year’s conference inspires you to step up and step out, as together we move Chicago forward for the next 45 years. Sincerely,

Patricia Hemingway Hall President & CEO Health Care Service Corporation Chairwoman, Chicago United Board of Directors

Plenary Sessions:

CID Talks - Inspiring Culture, Inclusion and Diversity In the spirit of “ideas are worth spreading,” CID Talks present thought-provoking and innovative ideas from transformational leaders. The series provides a broad depth and breadth of subject matters, and challenges the audience to think about dynamics in their environments that impact diversity and inclusion strategies and practices. The format is designed to motivate and inspire others to look at their own personal and professional experiences to help create other “big ideas.” Two groups feature six dynamic speakers who take you through their personal journey, each in a 10-minute timeframe. Presenters share with you what inspired them to drive innovation, lead change, and challenge their own leadership. Our audience will have an opportunity to engage in Q& A sessions with groups of presenters. Chicago United has assembled a diverse group of leaders from the boardroom to the C-Suite to provide you with a refreshing perspective on culture, inclusion, and diversity. 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

I believe that success in the future is dependent

on evolving our culture. It’s about people, their shared beliefs, and their commitment. As businesses, we must create an environment

where innovators and imaginative thinkers will thrive; that not only accepts differences, but

embraces differences. An environment where

people of varying backgrounds, experiences, and views can thrive is the type of workplace culture that will nurture creativity and drive

success. We must become excited about the way people are different. The odds of develop-

ing the most innovative solutions to problems

will improve in proportion to the breath and diversity of inputs into the decision making process. Success depends on having the best of people doing the best of thinking and that

means having the greatest pool of talent from which to draw.”

2013 Business Leaders of Color

The Business Leaders of Color publication was conceived through fierce discussion that has become a trademark of Chicago United. In 2001, Chicago United launched The Corporate Diversity Profile Survey. The study, which occurs on a biennial basis, is the first national survey of its kind to measure racial diversity specifically in leadership ranks, on corporate boards and in executive level management of large corporations. It serves as a benchmark for corporations to measure their progress in this area. When examined from a leadership perspective, the study continually finds corporations visibly lacking in racial diversity in corporate governance and senior management. After the first study was conducted, Chicago United viewed the results as an opportunity to understand resistance to greater board diversity. The debate uncovered a widespread call for the need to identify diverse talent for the Fortune 100, 500, and 1000. In response, Chicago United’s leadership took action to create a highly visible publication that demonstrates the level of diverse talent available in Chicago and the Business Leaders of Color publication was born. We see the Business Leaders of Color publication used often as a resource for those seeking to increase inclusion of diverse candidates in their boardrooms and business networks. Board chairmen, nominating committees, chief executives, and executive search firms will find exceptional individuals who currently serve, or are ready to contribute, as board directors. The biennial Business Leaders of Color publication profiles accomplished business leaders from the Chicago business landscape. These innovative, global thinkers are ready to provide shareholder value in a changing world and inspire others as they ascend to leadership. The Chicago United Business Leaders of Color typically demonstrate similar traits that have contributed to their success including integrity, unwavering commitment to delighting customers, a drive to improve their organizations, genuine concern for their communities, and a global perspective and experience. We believe that a chief executive or chair of a board nominating committee will be inspired by the successful outcomes delivered by these men and women who embrace well-considered risks as opportunities. In an ever-changing global economy, companies must be open to new approaches to solving problems and expanding markets. These Business Leaders of Color exhibit the innovation required to do that, and they lead their teams to do so as well. It is with great pride that we present a sterling collection of men and women who have the business acumen and the breadth and depth of experience to contribute to the global competitiveness of corporations. Through their identification, Chicago United aims to accelerate the rate of change of diverse representation in corporate governance.

“The city’s most brazenly unconventional symphony orchestra is ever looking for ways to shake up the classical music experience in ways that demolish boundaries and bring in more diverse audiences. The program scored on both counts.” John von Rhein, Chicago Tribune

The Chicago Sinfonietta opened its 26th season just a few weeks ago and reinforced its reputation for presenting concerts like no other orchestra in the United States. Founded in 1987 by pioneering African-American conductor Paul Freeman, the orchestra is committed to promoting diversity and inclusiveness in classical music while performing some of the most innovative concerts to be found anywhere in the field. The Sinfonietta was honored by ASCAP as “the nation’s most adventurous concert programmer” in 2012 and was recently dubbed “Chicago’s hippest orchestra” by the Chicago Tribune. The orchestra performs at Chicago’s Symphony Center and Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville. Now in her third season leading the Chicago Sinfonietta, Music Director Mei-Ann Chen continues to garner rave reviews and earn news fans everywhere she performs. She is one of the nation’s most dynamic and exciting young conductors who also directs the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and performs as a guest conductor with leading orchestras worldwide. Chicago Sinfonietta musicians truly represent the city’s rich cultural landscape and continue to fulfill the orchestra’s mission of Musical Excellence through Diversity™. A recent survey of major orchestras revealed that the Chicago Sinfonietta is the most diverse professional orchestra in the United States. Through this distinction, the Chicago Sinfonietta serves as a national model for inclusiveness in classical music. The Sinfonietta is committed to education and provides three programs that serve elementary school-age students through college graduates. Over 2,000 Chicago Public School students are served by the organization’s Audience Matters and SEED programs. In 2008 the Sinfonietta began its groundbreaking fellowship program, Project Inclusion, which provides professional development for diverse musicians. This program is becoming the model D & I initiative for the classical music field. All of the musicians performing tonight are Project Inclusion musicians. The Chicago Sinfonietta has produced fifteen compact discs, including the groundbreaking three-disc African Heritage Symphonic Series released on Cedille Records. The orchestra has embarked on six European tours, and has performed twice at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. In August of 2011, the Chicago Sinfonietta performed for over 7,500 people at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park to introduce Mei-Ann Chen to the people of Chicago. On Monday, January 20th the Sinfonietta will present its eigth Arts & Diversity Reception prior to its annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. concert. Bridge Award Introduction

2 0 1 3 U N ITED B R I D G E AWA R D The Bridge Award represents the first national award that honors CEOs who are advocates for multiracial diversity in corporate governance. In keeping with the spirit of our advocacy in support of the development of multiracial participation at all levels in business, this award brings visibility to those who have driven change and have inspired others to follow. Chicago United (CU) established the Bridge Award during its inaugural Changing Color of Leadership Conference in November of 2004. The Award celebrates the accomplishments of chief executive officers of publicly held corporations who have inspired and supported diversity on their board of directors. The Award also recognizes their corporation’s commitment to diversity in senior level management and business partnerships among diverse firms. After conducting a rigorous examination of publicly available company data, CU reviewed companies with diverse boards of directors based on a specific threshold of diverse board member participation. The Bridge Award serves to honor the exemplary practices of a major corporation supporting the development of a vibrant and richly diverse business community in the Chicago region. Each company is evaluated on quantitative and qualitative data by an internal and external committee. The committees consisted of corporate and nonprofit executives, entrepreneurs and academicians, and were selected based on their neutrality and experience. The committees were provided with rating/ranking criteria and a cumulative point system for the award selection process. We applaud the Bridge Award recipients for being true champions for diversity in governance, management, and business partnerships. Their leadership, vision, and commitment will continue to foster innovative approaches to achieving diversity in corporate governance throughout the business community.

About Chicago United SIGNATURE PROGRAMS AND PRODUCTS FIVE FORWARD | Invigorating the Local Economy Five Forward is a strategic initiative that enlists the commitment of CEOs of mid- to large-sized corporations in the Chicago metropolitan area to establish or expand business relationships with five current and/or new local minority firms. The initiative is designed to build a stronger regional economy and minority businesses of scale. The cornerstone of the Initiative is the premise that corporate spending with Chicago area MBEs generates economic output and jobs within the region. In addition to the direct impacts, this spending leads to successive rounds of spending by businesses, proprietors, and employees. Chicago United and the Center for Urban Economic Development of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) prepared a report on the economic impact of corporate spending with local MBEs, and that report formed the basis of The Five Forward Initiative™. The initiative was launched in 2008 as a pilot to increase spending by mid- to large-sized Chicago-area enterprises with local minority-owned businesses (MBEs), thereby leading to significant regional economic impact. To quantify the economic benefits and impact of this Initiative in 2013, Chicago United collaborated with the University of Illinois’ Regional Economics Application Laboratory (REAL). Data were analyzed from 2009 through 2011 as reported by Five Forward Committed Corporations. Expenditures by 18 Committed Corporations with 50 MBE partners were analyzed in this survey. This assessment included the direct and indirect impacts including the multiplier effect (i.e., the manner in which a direct expenditure leads to subsequent rounds of spending, and thus total economic impact). The results of this impact analysis showed that the expenditures by Committed Corporations with their MBE partners generated a direct impact of $227.7 million. About $67 million of these direct expenditures were paid in wages and salaries. This led to the creation of 1,424 jobs. According to Chicago United’s independent analysis, the number of MBEs with revenue ranging from $15 million to $30 million rose to six companies in 2011 from only one in 2009. Those same companies saw their collective employment numbers grow to 596 in 2011 from 280 in 2009. CORPORATE DIVERSITY PROFILE | Benchmarking Progress If we are to effectively address the vexing issues at the intersection of race and business, as Chicago United has sought to do for more than 40 years, then we must look analytically at the truth and do so without fear of trial or judgment. Chicago United’s nationally-recognized Corporate Diversity Profile (CDP) is a biennial survey that measures racial diversity specifically in the leadership ranks of large corporations, on corporate boards, and in executive level management. It is a benchmark for corporations to measure their progress in this area. The revitalized 2012 Profile has evolved to become a tool that helps Chicago corporations chart their own customized paths toward increased multiracial leadership. A preview of a series of scorecards in six categories that relate to the kind of talent development necessary to move executives of color into C-suites and leadership ranks has been added. A CEO, a business unit leader, or a team leader can now conduct a self-assessment to help determine how his or her organization can improve in critical areas including recruitment, performance management, succession planning and more. Diversity officers and managers will be able to provide clear and measurable direction to mid-level managers for how they will be expected to drive diversity and inclusion as a business imperative.

BUSINESS LEADERS OF COLOR | Identifying Talent The biennial Business Leaders of Color publications feature viable candidates for Fortune 1000 companies’ boards of directors. These innovative, global thinkers are ready to provide shareholder value in a changing world and inspire others as they ascend to leadership. While achieving personal success, each has contributed to the cultural, civic, and educational life of the Chicago region. The Business Leaders of Color (BLC) publication was conceived through fierce discussion that has become a trademark of Chicago United. The Corporate Diversity Profile Survey, which occurs on a biennial basis alternating the BLC, measures racial diversity specifically in leadership ranks, on corporate boards and in executive level management of large corporations. When examined from a leadership perspective, the study continually finds corporations visibly lacking in racial diversity in corporate governance and senior management. After the first study was conducted, Chicago United viewed the results as an opportunity to understand resistance to greater board diversity. In response, Chicago United’s leadership took action to create a highly visible publication that demonstrates the level of diverse talent available in Chicago and the Business Leaders of Color publication was born. The Business Leaders of Color publications provide a talent showcase of individuals eminently qualified to serve our nation’s corporations. Through their identification, Chicago United aims to accelerate the rate of change of diverse representation in corporate governance.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE: AN EXECUTIVE DEVELOPENT PROGRAM | Driving Change The Corporate Governance Executive Development Program is a unique opportunity for Business Leaders of Color who seek to position themselves as attractive candidates for board director roles with for-profit entities. As a result of the extensive and thoughtful collaboration between Chicago United and Notre Dame Executive Education, participants will develop working knowledge of corporate board governance, structures, and challenges in today’s evolving marketplace, as well as create and begin implementing an individual strategic plan to attract corporate board invitations. Some of the unique aspects that the Corporate Governance: An Executive Development Program addresses are the culturally sensitive issues multiracial board directors may face. Does being a person of color on a corporate board carry unique responsibilities and how does a director incorporate a sense of responsibility to his or her community into board duties?

BOARDLINK | Linking Corporate and Civic Leaders BoardLink provides the business community a unique leadership development tool that allows emerging leaders of color access to opportunities to develop skills that will expand their managerial experience and build business networks. BoardLink also enables leading non-profit organizations to more easily engage Chicago’s leaders of color in places where they can impact the organization’s mission. BoardLink is an electronic referral source where leaders of color looking for board opportunities can post their availability, and non-profit organizations in search of racially/ethnically diverse board members can post their openings. Both groups have access to search listings, share information, and make a connection. There is currently no similar referral source available to the city’s non-profit sector.
