A true shift towards diversity happens when

it becomes second nature, part of the very

fabric of who we are – both in front of the

camera and, perhaps even more importantly, behind the scenes. In the television news business, it’s not enough to hire on-air staff

and say, “now we’re diverse.” At ABC7, taking an inclusive approach to the people we hire leads to an inclusive approach to the stories we cover and the manner in which we present

the news each day. It is the only way we can truly flourish, the only way we can forge that essential connection with our viewers. Emily L. Barr

Always being here for our community shows the true colors of Blue. For 75 years, communities have loved hearing the name Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. That’s because they know we’re the local health care company bringing more than just simple and affordable coverage to our members, but a commitment to making the hometowns where we work and live healthier every day. From free student immunizations to outreach wellness programs, our plan is to encourage people at all stages of life to live healthy and inspired lives.

We’re in your community. We’re Blue Cross. And because we’re here, we’ll always be there.

From a strategic perspective, diversity among our employees and board of directors is a major

priority for HCSC. To help as many people

as possible find quality, affordable health care we must reach out to a more diverse

population than ever before. That requires insights and strategies that can come only

from a board and workforce that is equally diverse.”

2011 Business Leaders of Color

The Business Leaders of Color publication was conceived through fierce discussion that has become a trademark of Chicago United. In 2001, Chicago United launched The Corporate Diversity Profile Survey. The study, which occurs on a biennial basis, is the first national survey of its kind to measure racial diversity specifically in leadership ranks, on corporate boards and in executive level management of large corporations. It serves as a benchmark for corporations to measure their progress in this area. When examined from a leadership perspective, the study continually finds corporations visibly lacking in racial diversity in corporate governance and senior management. After the first study was conducted, Chicago United viewed the results as an opportunity to understand resistance to greater board diversity. The debate uncovered a widespread call for the need to identify diverse talent for the Fortune 100, 500, and 1000.In response, Chicago United’s leadership took action to create a highly visible publication that demonstrates the level of diverse talent available in Chicago and the Business Leaders of Color publication was born. We see the Business Leaders of Color publication used often as a resource for those seeking to increase inclusion of diverse candidates in their boardrooms and business networks. Board chairmen, nominating committees, chief executives, and executive search firms will find exceptional individuals who currently serve, or are ready to contribute, as board directors. The biennial Business Leaders of Color publication profiles accomplished business leaders from the Chicago business landscape. These innovative, global thinkers are ready to provide shareholder value in a changing world and inspire others as they ascend to leadership. The Chicago United Business Leaders of Color typically demonstrate similar traits that have contributed to their success including integrity, unwavering commitment to delighting customers, a drive to improve their organizations, genuine concern for their communities, and a global perspective and experience. We believe that a chief executive or chair of a board nominating committee will be inspired by the successful outcomes delivered by these men and women who embrace well-considered risks as opportunities. In an ever-changing global economy, companies must be open to new approaches to solving problems and expanding markets. These Business Leaders of Color exhibit the innovation required to do that, and they lead their teams to do so as well. It is with great pride that we present a sterling collection of men and women who have the business acumen and the breadth and depth of experience to contribute to the global competitiveness of corporations. Through their identification, Chicago United aims to accelerate the rate of change of diverse representation in corporate governance.

Bridge Award Introduction

2 01 1 C H I CAG O U N ITED B R I DG E AWAR D The Bridge Award represents the first national award that honors CEOs who are advocates for multiracial diversity in corporate governance. In keeping with the spirit of our advocacy in support of the development of multiracial participation at all levels in business, this award brings visibility to those who have driven change and have inspired others to follow. Chicago United (CU) established the Bridge Awards during its inaugural Changing Color of Leadership Conference in November of 2004. The award celebrates the accomplishments of chief executive officers of publicly held corporations who have inspired and supported diversity on their board of directors. The award also recognizes their corporation’s commitment to diversity in senior level management and business partnerships among diverse firms. After conducting a rigorous examination of publicly available company data, CU reviewed companies with diverse boards of directors based on a specific threshold of diverse board member participation. The Bridge Award serves to honor the exemplary practices of a Fortune 500 corporation for supporting the development of a vibrant and richly diverse business community. Each company was evaluated on quantitative and qualitative data by an internal and external committee. The committees consisted of corporate and nonprofit executives, entrepreneurs and academicians, and were selected based on their neutrality and experience. The committees were provided with rating/ranking criteria and a cumulative point system for the award selection process. We applaud the Bridge Award recipients for being true champions for diversity in governance, management, and business partnerships. Their leadership, vision, and commitment will continue to foster innovative approaches to achieving diversity in corporate governance throughout the business community.

From a strategic perspective, diversity among our employees and board of directors is a major priority for HCSC. To help as many people as possible find quality, affordable health care we must reach out to a more diverse population than ever before. That requires insights and strategies that can come only from a board and workforce that is equally diverse.” Patricia Hemingway Hall

2011 Chicago United Bridge Award Recipient Patricia Hemingway Hall

President and Chief Executive Officer Health Care Service Corporation Patricia Hemingway Hall is president and chief executive officer of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the nation’s largest non-investor-owned health insurer and fourth largest overall. HCSC operates the Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas; serves more than 13 million members; and has more than 16,000 employees. HCSC also operates Dearborn National, which includes Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Company, Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Company of New York, Colorado Bankers Life Insurance Company and Dental Network of America. Ms. Hemingway Hall has received a number of recognitions for her leadership in the health care industry, including being named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in 2011 by Modern Healthcare magazine, the YWCA’s 2011 “Outstanding Leader in Business,” one of the “Seven People to Watch” in 2011 by the Chicago Tribune, one of the “Women to Watch” in 2011 by Crain’s Chicago Business and one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.” Ms. Hemingway Hall began her career as an ICU nurse, which significantly shaped the way she views how the health care system should work — that it should provide appropriate care in a financially sound manner that enables continued innovation and improvement. Taking the lessons learned firsthand in working with patients, she applied them in subsequent leadership roles in utilization and care management, human resources, and as chief operating officer and then president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, where she was responsible for sales and marketing for all customer segments, product development, medical policy, disease management, network development, acquisitions, and government and legislative relations. HCSC has a long legacy of recognizing the value of diversity and inclusion. HCSC’s commitment is visible at every level of the business. Ms. Hemingway Hall continues to maintain an inclusive and culturally competent workforce, leverage the diverse skills and worldviews of all employees, and ensure that diversity is integrated into corporate strategies to provide affordable and accessible health care solutions. The health care industry is arguably being impacted more than other industries by demographic shifts and legislation to address the disparities in health care in ethnically diverse communities. Addressing these issues requires the engagement of a diverse group of stakeholders to be responsive to the marketplace and achieve sustainable growth. Looking toward the future of health care, Ms. Hemingway Hall has focused the company’s efforts on leveraging technology and developing an IT infrastructure that will be able to deliver unparalleled health data for consumers, employers, and health care providers, with the goal of transparency, ease, and efficiency, so that members’ health care can be optimized and unnecessary spending minimized. Ms. Hemingway Hall received a master’s degree in public health, health planning, and administration from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Michigan State University. – 119 –

About Chicago United SIGNATURE PROGRAMS AND PRODUCTS FIVE FORWARD | Invigorating the Local Economy Five Forward is a strategic initiative that enlists the commitment of CEOs of mid- to large-sized corporations in the Chicago metropolitan area to establish or expand business relationships with five current and/or new local minority firms. The initiative is designed to build a stronger regional economy and minority businesses of scale. The cornerstone of the Initiative is the premise that corporate spending with Chicago area MBEs generates economic output and jobs within the region. In addition to the direct impacts, this spending leads to successive rounds of spending by businesses, proprietors, and employees. Chicago United and the Center for Urban Economic Development of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) prepared a report on the economic impact of corporate spending with local MBEs, and that report formed the basis of The Five Forward Initiative™. The 2007 report indicated that approximately $228 million in spending by 14 surveyed corporations led to a total estimated impact of roughly $425 million. The indirect and induced impacts associated with this direct spending reflected economic activity generated as direct spending circulated within the regional economy. Because MBEs are more likely to hire people of color, as well as contract with other MBEs, it is generally understood that spending with MBEs – and the associated “multiplier effects” – disproportionately benefit minority communities, as compared to spending with majority-owned firms. Additionally, total regional employment associated with this spending led to approximately 4,000 jobs. The multiplier effect and the job creation are the significant results of the plan prescribed by The Initiative. The Five Forward Initiative™ gathers empirical data to measure the impact on the regional economy when spending by committed corporations with local MBEs is increased. The recent data reveal very positive signs of progress. In the fourth quarter of 2010, Five Forward committed companies reported an increase of 30% over the 2009 fourth quarter spend figure. In 2012, Chicago United plans an updated economic impact analysis based on data collected from the companies participating in Five Forward. Empirical and anecdotal evidence indicates that corporate spending with local MBEs is creating jobs and, thereby, expanding the local tax base. About Chicago United SIGNATURE PROGRAMS AND PRODUCTS

CORPORATE DIVERSITY PROFILE | Benchmarking Progress If we are to effectively address the vexing issues at the intersection of race and business, as Chicago United has sought to do for more than 40 years, then we must look analytically at the truth and do so without fear of trial or judgment. Chicago United’s nationally-recognized Corporate Diversity Profile (CDP) is a biennial survey that measures racial diversity specifically in the leadership ranks of large corporations, on corporate boards, and in executive level management. It is a benchmark for corporations to measure their progress in this area. Large corporations have grown increasingly successful at diversity and inclusion within their employment ranks. Yet, the study consistently highlights the need to expand the pool of minorities available for senior leadership positions which begins by growing diverse talent in the leadership pipeline and inspires the next generation. The primary research that forms the CDP makes it a valuable tool for large and small enterprises, policy makers, academicians and all advocates for greater diversity and inclusion.

DIVERSITY OFFICER ROUNDTABLES | Inspiring Inclusion The Diversity Officer Roundtables are designed to bring diversity practitioners from Chicago’s corporations together to share best practices in diversity and inclusion strategy and implementation. Diversity Officer Roundtables were developed to connect the practitioners of the Corporate Diversity Profile with the goal of growing diverse talent in the leadership pipeline, expanding the pool of minorities available for leadership positions, and ultimately increasing diversity in boardrooms and executive level management.

About Chicago United SIGNATURE PROGRAMS AND PRODUCTS

BUSINESS LEADERS OF COLOR | Identifying Talent The biennial Business Leaders of Color publications feature viable candidates for Fortune 1000 companies’ boards of directors. The Business Leaders of Color typically demonstrate similar traits that have contributed to their success including integrity, unwavering commitment to delighting customers, a drive to improve their organizations, a track record of balanced decision making, a range of experiences that reflect flexibility and an ability to transcend narrow experiences, a respect for diverse points of view and varied ways to approach issues and topics, genuine concern for their communities, and a global perspective and experience. These innovative, global thinkers are ready to provide shareholder value in a changing world and inspire others as they ascend to leadership. They themselves represent the kind of talent that companies seek, and they actively recruit and groom other accomplished executives as an integral part of their professional mission. They speak about valuing and developing people and relationships as top priorities. While achieving personal success, each has contributed to the cultural, civic, and educational life of the Chicago region. The Business Leaders of Color publication was conceived through fierce discussion that has become a trademark of Chicago United. The Corporate Diversity Profile Survey, which occurs on a biennial basis alternating the BLC, measures racial diversity specifically in leadership ranks, on corporate boards and in executive level management of large corporations. When examined from a leadership perspective, the study continually finds corporations visibly lacking in racial diversity in corporate governance and senior management. After the first study was conducted, Chicago United viewed the results as an opportunity to understand resistance to greater board diversity. The debate uncovered a widespread call for the need to identify diverse talent for the Fortune 100, 500, and 1000. In response, Chicago United’s leadership took action to create a highly visible publication that demonstrates the level of diverse talent available in Chicago and the Business Leaders of Color publication was born. The Business Leaders of Color publications provide a talent showcase of individuals eminently qualified to serve our nation’s corporations. Through their identification, Chicago United aims to accelerate the rate of change of diverse representation in corporate governance.

About Chicago United SIGNATURE PROGRAMS AND PRODUCTS

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE: AN EXECUTIVE DEVELOPENT PROGRAM | Driving Change The Corporate Governance Executive Development Program is a unique opportunity for Business Leaders of Color who seek to position themselves as attractive candidates for board director roles with for-profit entities. As a result of the extensive and thoughtful collaboration between Chicago United and Notre Dame Executive Education, participants will develop working knowledge of corporate board governance, structures, and challenges in today’s evolving marketplace as well as create and begin implementing an individual strategic plan to attract corporate board invitations. Some of the unique aspects that the Corporate Governance: An Executive Development Program addresses are the culturally sensitive issues multiracial board directors may face. Does being a person of color on a corporate board carry unique responsibilities and how does a director incorporate a sense of responsibility to his or her community into board duties? 2011 guest executives included: Andy McKenna, Sheila Penrose, Lou Nieto, Dick Notabaert, and Carolyn Woo for the first of the two-session program.

BOARDLINK | Linking Corporate and Civic Leaders BoardLink provides the business community a unique leadership development tool that allows emerging leaders of color access to opportunities to develop skills that will expand their managerial experience and build business networks. BoardLink also enables leading non-profit organizations to more easily engage Chicago’s leaders of color in places where they can impact the organization’s mission. BoardLink is an electronic referral source where leaders of color looking for board opportunities can post their availability, and non-profit organizations in search of racially/ethnically diverse board members can post their openings. Both groups have access to search listings, share information, and make a connection. There is currently no similar referral source available to the city’s non-profit sector. There are currently 81 active candidate postings showing in BoardLink and there have been 207 nonprofit board requests for connection in 2011 as of the printing of the program book.
