November 16, 2006 Dear Conference Participants: Welcome to the third annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and Bridge Awards Dinner. On behalf of Chicago United members, we thank all sponsors, staff, volunteers and participants for your interest and commitment to closing the gap between race and business through meaningful dialogue and programs.

No time is better than today for corporate, community and individual leaders to build on progress of the past and invest in further inclusion of people of color in all aspects of business. This conference focuses on the important topics of corporate governance, executive management and business partnerships with workshops designed for corporate and minority business enterprise leaders. The conference builds on a strong legacy of Chicago United programs designed to educate and engage leaders in building and sustaining diversity in the business community. Tonight’s dinner program will motivate us toward further progress as we honor leaders of McDonald’s and Wal-Mart, corporations who have demonstrated commitment to multiracial leadership, and engage in the experience of internationally recognized communicator Bernard Shaw.

Conference Speakers Patricia S. Bellinger

Director, BP Leadership Academy and Group Vice President BP In June 2006, Patricia S. Bellinger was appointed director, BP Leadership Academy and group vice president. In this new role, Ms. Bellinger will develop and deploy learning interventions for BP’s senior most executives, and she will also provide strategic advice to the group chief executives on individual and collective leadership development.

Prior to this appointment, Ms. Bellinger was group vice president – executive development, diversity and inclusion. As the head of Global diversity and inclusion, Ms. Bellinger oversaw BP’s strategic efforts in creating plans, policies and tools to support the enactment of an inclusive meritocracy throughout the organization and in fostering a diverse workforce at every level. While leading Executive Development, Ms. Bellinger was accountable for the development of an integrated learning framework, including programs and interventions aimed at developing BP’s senior leadership and deepening their understanding of the strategic challenges of today’s environment.

Earlier this year, under Ms. Bellinger’s leadership, BP was awarded the Catalyst Award for measurable results in the advancement of women in business and for the corporation’s successful global diversity strategy. Ms. Bellinger joined BP in May 2000 as vice president, diversity & inclusion.

A graduate of Harvard University, Ms. Bellinger speaks fluent French and Spanish.

Ivy H. Bennett

Senior Vice President, Marketing Harris Bank In September 2006, Ivy Bennett joined Harris as senior vice president, marketing. She is responsible for leading the branding and advertising efforts for personal and business banking.

Prior to joining Harris, Ms. Bennett was vice president and chief marketing officer for the University of Chicago Hospitals where she had overall responsibility for marketing strategy, advertising, external web sites and the employee intranet. During her tenure, the organization gained new strategic insights about the brand and marketplace.

Ms. Bennett holds an MBA degree from Harvard Business School, a master of public health degree from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) from Hampton University.

Conference Speakers Dr. Sonja Boone

Director of Diversity, Medical Director of Physician Recruitment Northwestern Memorial Hospital Sonja Boone, MD, is director of diversity and medical director of physician recruitment. Since 2000, she has reinvigorated the Office of Diversity with diversity programs and initiatives, while successfully managing budgets totally more than 4.6 million dollars over the past 6 years. These programs and initiatives impact organizational representation, inclusiveness, and cultural competency for patients, as well as 6,000 employees, and 1,400 medical staff.

Additionally, Dr. Boone is responsible for leading the effort to expand the Business Supplier Diversity Program at NMH from construction projects, which now include supplies and professional services purchased everyday by the hospital. With current goals in place since approval in Fall 2003, this Business Diversity Program will impact close to 100 million dollars spent by NMH every year.

At the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University, Dr. Boone is an active member of the Department of Medicine and teaches medical students regularly as a FSM College Mentor for 46 students, and serves on the Feinberg School of Medicine Interview Committee.

Dr. Boone is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Medicine and went on to complete her residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Rush University Medical Center.

Cheryl Burton

News Anchor and Reporter ABC 7 News Emmy award winning Cheryl Burton, co-anchors two of the #1 rated newscast in Chicago. Burton co-anchors the ABC 7 News at 5 p.m., alongside Ron Magers, and is a contributing anchor of ABC 7’s 10 p.m. newscast. The Chicago native joined ABC 7 as a weekend co-anchor and reporter in November 1992.

She has received many honors for her work including several Emmy Awards. She was the first recipient of the 2005 “Sisters in the Spirit” Award, given by Chicago area gospel singers to persons who exemplify a faith-based life. She was honored in 2005 and 2004 with the Thurgood Marshall Award. The Chicago Association of Black Journalist (CABJ) presented her with the 2004 Russ Ewing Award for the emotional story of a mother-to-daughter kidney donation.

She is very active in the Chicago community and gives much of her time to non-profit groups and charities. She is a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club of America and serves as a motivational speaker for the Chicago Public Schools. She serves on the boards of the Life with Lupus Guild, the Multicultural Dance Center and City Year. She also participates in the Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s fashion show.

Ms. Burton graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana with a B.S. degree in psychology and biology.

Conference Speakers Michael Carr

National Franchise Manager – Recruiting BP In April 2006, Mr. Carr became national franchise manager - recruiting for BP US Convenience Operations. This position encompasses a dual role of developing and directing the business unit’s diversity and inclusion strategies for recruiting franchisees. In addition, he is responsible for expanding business development in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California.

Mr. Carr joined BP in 1995 initially serving as the international sales and marketing manager in Houston, Texas, London, England, and Chicago, Illinois. He worked in BP’s Chemical Business as the senior account manager, located in Chicago, Illinois, where he managed 1 billion dollars in sales.

Prior to joining BP, Mr. Carr held the position of regional manager of fuel purchasing for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, GA. His responsibilities included procuring 800 million gallons of aviation fuel. He also served as chairman of LAXFUEL where he directed the 90 million dollar integration of the Los Angeles Airport fuel system.

Mr. Carr received a bachelor of business administration, with a minor in economics from the Augusta State College in Augusta, Georgia.

Marian H. Carrington

Principal and Co-Owner Carrington & Carrington, Ltd. Marian H. Carrington is a principal and co-owner of Carrington & Carrington, Ltd., a retained executive search firm with national affiliations, located in downtown Chicago. Carrington & Carrington, Ltd. specializes in the recruiting and placement of senior level AfricanAmerican, Hispanic and other minority professionals across multiple functional areas and industries. Carrington & Carrington’s clients are global Fortune 500 companies and large not-for-profit institutions.

Ms. Carrington joined the firm with her husband, Willie Carrington (founder), in 1990, as a principal. Prior to joining Carrington & Carrington Ltd., Ms. Carrington was employed for twelve years with Allstate Insurance Company in Northbrook, Illinois in human resources and operations leadership positions.

Ms. Carrington currently serves on the Athena International Board of Directors, was the first African American woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the Association of Executive Search Consultants (AESC), the past president of the Board of Directors for the Chicago Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and is one of the founding members of the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources.

Gloria Castillo is president of Chicago United, a corporate membership organization that brings together the corporate business community, minority entrepreneurs and leaders of our great institutions, to leverage the economic power of Chicago for the mutual benefit of all races. Prior to joining Chicago United, Ms. Castillo spent over 20 years in advertising and promotions as president of Monarch Marketing Group, Inc. Castillo was honored in October of 2006 as the Minority Business Advocate of the Year by the Minority Business Development Agency Chicago Region, US Department of Commerce. In October 1993, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency awarded Gloria Castillo and Mona Castillo as co-honorees of their 1993 Minority Entrepreneurs of the Year Award. Among numerous other state and national awards, Monarch was named one of Minority Business Report’s “Ten Outstanding Companies” in 1991 and in 1996 Gloria Castillo was named among the “100 Most Influential Women in Chicago” by Crain’s Chicago Business and in 1999 she was named the Entrepreneurial Women of the Year Award from the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC).

Henry Cisneros Chairman CityView

Henry Cisneros is chairman of the CityView companies, communitybuilding firms dedicated to producing workforce homes in America’s cities. CityView’s mission is to work with the nation’s leading homebuilders to create “villages within cities”, priced within the range of average families, designed to honor community traditions. From 19972000, Mr. Cisneros was president and chief operating officer of Univision Communications, the Spanish-language broadcaster which has become the fifth-most-watched television network in the nation.

From 1993 to 1997, Mr. Cisneros served as secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. As a member of President Clinton’s Cabinet, Secretary Cisneros was assigned America’s housing and community development portfolio. Prior to joining the Cabinet, he was chairman of Cisneros Asset Management Company, a fixed income management firm operating nationally.

Mr. Cisneros holds a bachelor of arts and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Texas A&M University. He earned a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University, a doctorate in public administration from George Washington University, and has been awarded over 20 honorary doctorates.

Ginny Clarke heads Spencer Stuart’s Global Diversity Practice and Real Estate Practice, and also is a member of the firm’s Financial Services Practice.

Her search clients include REITs, real estate advisory and development firms, insurance companies and banks. She has successfully recruited professionals in a variety of senior-level functions including general management, portfolio management, investments, corporate real estate, finance/accounting and human resources.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Clarke spent several years in banking and 10 years in the real estate investment management business with Jones Lang LaSalle and Prudential Real Estate Investors. Her activities included asset management, portfolio management, capital raising and client servicing.

Ms. Clarke received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at Davis and a master’s in management from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. She is a member of the Kellogg Alumni Advisory Board and the Board of Medical Properties Trust in Birmingham, Alabama.

Haven Cockerham

President and CEO Cockerham & Associates Haven Cockerham is a seasoned chief human resources officer with 30 years of experience with Fortune 250 companies in automotive, electric utility, and printing industries. He has successfully transformed human resource functions to be strategic, cost effective, and strong contributors to overall company objectives. He currently is president and CEO of Cockerham & Associates, a human resource and diversity strategy consulting firm. Previously he was the chief human resources officer for RR Donnelley, a $4 billion print and communications company. While there, he reported to the CEO and was a member of the executive staff.

During his tenure, he led global human resource activities that impacted 34,000 employees in North America, Latin and South America, Europe and Asia. He managed a human resource organization of 420 employees with an operating budget of $54 million plus $146 million for healthcare costs.

Mr. Cockerham is a strong leader, change agent, and developer of talent and effective organizations. He has earned the respect of HR leaders nationally – from corporate consulting firms and government agencies.

Mr. Cockerham received his BS in economics from North Carolina A & T University and an MBA from Michigan State University’s Advance Management Program.

Conference Speakers Jerome E. Cole

Human Resources Manager ComEd Jerome Cole is currently the human resources manager supporting ComEd’s Operations Department in Chicago.

Mr. Cole began his career with ComEd in July 1978. He spent most of his career in the Customer and Marketing Services Organization. He was promoted to management in February 1984. He has been a supervisor in Meter Reading, the Call Center, Bill Adjustment, the Bill Payment Center, and Credit and Treasury. He has also been a senior claims representative, human resources representative, and external affairs manager.

During the first quarter of 1991, Mr. Cole and several other ComEd management employees met and discussed forming an organization designed to represent the varying needs within the company salient to its African-American employees. A series of planning sessions occurred and over the next several months an organization called the Edison African American Management Association – EAAMA was formed. The organization’s mission expanded in scope to include union employees. The name of the group was changed to incorporate the newly formed parent company of ComEd, Exelon Corporation, to the Exelon African American Members Association. Since the inception of EAAMA, Mr. Cole has served on the Advisory Board, has been chair of the Community Service Committee, and is now president of EAAMA at ComEd.

Ronald E. Daly

Adjunct Professor of Strategy Loyola University Graduate School of Business Ron Daly currently serves as an adjunct professor at Loyola University’s Graduate School of Business. Prior to joining the staff of Loyola, Mr. Daly was chairman and CEO of Océ North America. He was responsible for the largest sales and marketing channel for Océ NV, a market leader in the manufacture and sales of high-speed digital printing equipment, wide format scanners and printers, cut-sheet copiers and printers, software, and professional services. Additionally Océ North America includes an outsourcing business and a paper converting company.

Océ NV has sales of $3.2 billion with $1.2 billion in North America.

During his tenure, Mr. Daly also served on the Board of Executive Directors. Prior to Océ, Mr. Daly was with RR Donnelly where he served as president of the Telecommunications Business Unit and Donnelly Print Solutions.

Mr. Daly has considerable experience in managing and leading in diverse work environments.

During his career, he ran the gamut from leading small entrepreneurial, high tech businesses, to high transaction, fast-paced businesses to large capital-intensive operations. His work history is characterized by movement from factory floor to supervision, department management, division management, and to senior management.

Mr. Daly received his MBA in finance from Loyola of Chicago and his BA from Governor’s State University.

Mr. Dobyne joins MBDA after an illustrious private sector career that included various senior operations management roles in the service industry. His expertise at developing and managing highly successful entrepreneurial ventures is widely recognized.

Prior to his time in the private sector, Mr. Dobyne served as an officer in the United States Navy, holding various contract management positions that included: assistant officer in charge of construction contracts - Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and group leader, Energy Research and Development Laboratory - Tyndall AFB, Florida. Mr. Dobyne received numerous awards while serving his country, attesting to his tireless dedication, skill, and commitment.

Mr. Dobyne is a native of Detroit, Michigan and obtained a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University and a master of business administration degree from Harvard Business School.

Dierdra Drake

Senior Vice President, Human Resources Harris Deirdre Drake is responsible for building and driving human resource strategic plans and measuring performance metrics for Chicagoland Banking. In her role, she is instrumental in planning and developing annual goals and objectives for the division, and is accountable for developing human resource strategies to support merger and acquisition growth. A native of Michigan, Drake was appointed to the role in January 2006.

Ms. Drake brings over 16 years of experience and leadership in human resources from Marathon Oil, Kraft, General Foods, MCI Telecommunications, and ARAMARK Corporation. Most recently, she served as senior vice-president, healthcare & education, with ARAMARK Corporation, where she used her change management expertise to lead the planning, implementation, and management of a large number of successful acquisitions.

Ms. Drake has a master’s of business administration from St. Joseph’s University and a bachelor of science in business administration from Central Michigan University.

Amanda Fernandez is director of organization development with the Hudson Highland Group, Inc. where she is responsible for talent management initiatives. She is a seasoned leader with over 13 years of global industry and consulting experience in human resources and related fields. She has worked in leadership roles assisting complex, matrixed organizations with diversity strategy implementation, project management, learning and development and organizational development.

Her diversity experience spans many organizations and includes Hudson Highland Group where she served as director of diversity as well as a client-facing role providing diversity consulting services to an array of clients. In addition she has served as director of diversity for Sodexho USA where she implemented diversity strategy for the company’s largest division, consisting of 50,000 employees.

Ms. Fernandez has been interviewed and quoted by HR Executive Magazine, CNN radio and other human resources focused forums on diversity issues.

Ms. Fernandez holds a master’s degree in human resources education from Fordham University in New York City.

Maye Foster-Thompson

Principal Maye Foster-Thompson & Associates Maye Foster-Thompson is a nationally recognized professional with more than thirty years of experience in designing highly successful business and economic development programs for Fortune 500 corporations and government organizations. She is a seasoned expert and lecturer on issues impacting the nation’s women and minority business communities.

She began her career as assistant director of the Chicago Economic Development Corporation, Inc., and in 1979 joined the Chicago Minority Business Development Council, Inc. (CMBDC), a consortium of leading U.S. corporations and government agencies, as its associate director. In 1981, Ms. FosterThompson was promoted to executive director where she advocated for increased procurement opportunities for minority-owned firms until 2002.

From 2002-2006, Ms. Foster- Thompson served as the executive director of business diversity for the University of Chicago Hospitals. She was responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the Hospitals’ business diversity initiative to incorporate minority and women businesses into all aspects of its supply chain – including purchasing, construction and professional services.

Mr. Fradin has a solid reputation as a strategic, decisive, action-oriented, and client-focused individual who places an enormously high value on people. Prior to joining Hewitt, he served as president and CEO of The BISYS Group, Inc. where he was instrumental in realigning the company’s businesses. Ernest Freeman

Manager, Supplier Diversity PepsiCo Ernest Freeman is supplier diversity manager for QTG (Quaker Oats, Tropicana, and Gatorade), a division of PepsiCo. Responsible for increasing the effectiveness of supplier diversity efforts here in Chicago, PepsiCo spent over $921 million with minority and women businesses in 2005.

Before joining PepsiCo, Mr. Freeman held numerous managerial positions with Federal-Mogul Corporation where he was the architect for the company’s formal supplier diversity program. He began his career as a logistics officer in the U.S. Army’s 3rd and 6th Infantry Division culminating his career at the rank of Major with the Industrial Operations Command, Rock Island, IL. Mr. Freeman is board president for the Chicago Minority Business Development Council and the 2006 recipient of the CMBCDC Andres C. Rasmussen Jr. Award and the SBA 2006 Minority Small Business Champion of the Year.

Mr. Freeman holds an MS in management from the University of Laverne and a BS in business administration from Western Illinois University. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Logistics Management College and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Conference Speakers Theresa Gutierrez

General Assignment Reporter,

ABC7 News and Host of “Ñ Beat” Theresa Gutierrez has been a general assignment reporter for ABC7 News since June 1986. In addition to her reporting duties, Gutierrez serves as host of “Ñ Beat,” a series of locally produced half-hour specials featuring prominent Hispanics who are making positive strides in the community.

Gutierrez was one of the first Hispanic women to break into television journalism. Guttierez along with Barbara Walters, Connie Chung, Christine Amanpour, and Jane Pauly were featured on the cover of the educational book, “Women who broke barriers: The new face of TV news.” The book has been distributed to schools throughout the world.

Gutierrez began her media career in 1971 at NBC 5 as a production assistant and in 1972 joined ABC 7 in the same position. For 25 years Gutierrez has hosted and produced a number of television talk shows including “The Feminine Franchise,” a feminist program dealing with topics of concern to women, “Weekend Edition,” “Weekend,” and “Sunday in Chicago with Theresa Gutierrez.”

Ms. Gutierrez received her bachelor of arts degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She resides in the Chicago area.

Shelia C. Hill

President Chicago Minority Business Development Council Shelia C. Hill is the president of the Chicago Minority Business Development Council, Inc. (CMBDC). Prior to joining CMBDC, Ms. Hill was associate director, supplier diversity for Kraft and executive director of the Chicago Minority Business Opportunity Committee, an organization funded by the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), U.S. Department of Commerce, whose mission is to increase opportunities for minority entrepreneurs.

Previous experience includes serving as the manager of diversity business development for Johnson Controls and as national director of business development diversity for Square D/Schneider Electric.

Ms. Hill received a BA in business management from Michael Louis University.

Conference Speakers Steve Larson

Minority Business Manager Ford Motor Company Steve Larson began his career at Ford Motor Company in 1973 as an after-market parts merchandiser. In 1978, he was promoted to Transportation and Traffic Office at World Headquarters where he negotiated contracts with the nation’s railroads. In 1987, Steve was assigned the position of minority business manager for all transportation services at Ford and in 1993 was promoted to manager of supplier diversity.

Mr. Larson has been named Advocate of the Year by the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council twice, by the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, by the Small Business Administration, by the Native American Business Alliance and by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Larson is a member of the board of directors for the Michigan Minority Business Development Council and the Native American Business Alliance.

Reginald K. Layton

Director, Diversity Business Development Johnson Controls, Inc. Reginald K. Layton is director of diversity business development for Johnson Controls, Inc. In this position, he is responsible for overseeing all diverse purchasing activities of Johnson Controls company-wide.

He has been with the company since 1997. Johnson Controls has spent more than $1 billion each year with diverse firms since 2002. The company’s achievements have garnered prestigious recognition, as Johnson Controls was named Corporation of the Year and Mr. Layton was named Minority Business Enterprise Advocate of the Year by the National Minority Supplier Development Council in 2003. Johnson Controls is also a member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable, an elite group of corporations that spend more than one billion dollars with minority and women-owned firms.

Before Johnson Controls, Mr. Layton worked for Bailey Controls Company as a project manager. Also, Mr. Layton held management positions in sales and human resources at Bailey Controls.

Mr. Layton received his bachelor’s degree in management science in 1986 and master’s in economics in 1989 from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He serves on the board of directors for the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), the Michigan Minority Business Development Council (MMBDC), the Central and South Texas Minority Business Council (CSTMBC), and the Dartmouth Minority Business Executive Program in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Judy C. Mathews

Mathews is founder and president of Community Interface, a general management consulting firm, specializing in designing and developing business and diversity strategies. Founded in 1991, Ms. Mathews brings 28 years of management consulting experience to the firm. Prior to founding Community Interface, Ms. Mathews was a minority business consultant with James H. Lowry & Associates, a Chicago-based management consulting firm.

Under her leadership, Community Interface has been engaged to provide management consulting services for such major clients as, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, The University of Chicago, The University of Chicago Hospitals, The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, Loop Capital Markets, Caremark Rx, Northern Trust, and Chicago United, Inc. Talent Program Manager, HR Outsourcing Hewitt Associates Charmon Parker Williams, PhD is a talent program manager in the HR outsourcing function. She has been with Hewitt for 8 years and is responsible for managing programs and processes that support HR strategy and executive talent management for Hewitt’s HR Outsourcing business segment. During her tenure at Hewitt, she has designed and led several firm-wide talent management programs including mentoring programs, key talent and leadership development programs, and career transition programs. She designed and implemented the first firm-wide mentoring program for African Americans at Hewitt.

She also served as project manager for the first Hewitt Leadership Group Annual Meeting.

Ms. Parker-Williams is co-developer and co-facilitator for a seminar called “Creating Your Self Brand – Brand You.” She is the lead for Hewitt’s Affinity Group for African American associates and part of the Multicultural Leadership Dialogue.

Prior to Hewitt, Ms. Parker-Williams was principal consultant for her own management consulting firm; vice president of the human resources and diversity practice for James H. Lowry and Associates, a management consulting firm; personnel officer for Harris Trust and Savings Bank; personnel psychologist for the regional office of a major federal agency; and adjunct professor at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

Ms. Parker-Williams has a master of science and doctorate of philosophy in industrial/ organizational psychology from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a bachelor of arts in psychology from Syracuse University.

Sandra Rand

Manager, Supplier Diversity United Airlines Sandra Rand was appointed manager of supplier diversity for United Airlines in 1988. In this role, she is responsible for directing all aspects of United’s diverse procurement initiatives company-wide. This includes identifying qualified diverse suppliers to participate in the competitive bid process, developing and monitoring individual department participation goals, and acting as liaison to the small business community.

Throughout her tenure she has held several management positions with increasing responsibilities, including senior buyer.

Ms. Rand’s personal commitment, passion and expertise within the M/WBE arena have resulted in many guest speaker appearances, newspaper and magazine articles as well as radio and television interviews. She is a past chair of the National Minority Supplier Development Council’s (NMSDC) Chairperson Committee and CMBDC, and currently is an active board member of the NMSDC, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, Women’s Business Development Center, CMBDC, and is the current chair of the NMSDC Airline Transportation Group.

Conference Speakers Judith Roussel

Illinois District Director U. S. Small Business Administration In October, 2005, Judith A. Roussel was appointed by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to serve as SBA’s senior executive for Gulf Coast Recovery and Rebuilding. In this capacity, she was the agency’s chief contact for SBA efforts in the Gulf Region and the Administrator’s personal representative and interface with state and local government and economic development officials in the four states impacted by the Hurricanes of 2005. Her major responsibility was to assure participation by small businesses in the recovery and rebuilding processes. Under her leadership, small companies received more than $5 billion in posthurricane contract awards.

Ms. Roussel has served as Illinois district director of the SBA since December, 1999. In this capacity, she is responsible for managing the promotion and delivery of U.S. government sponsored programs providing capital access, entrepreneurial development, international trade development, and procurement assistance to Illinois’ nearly 1 million small businesses.

For nearly a decade, Ms. Roussel served as associate administrator in procurement policy-making positions at SBA’s headquarters in Washington, DC. She was responsible for the development of programs and strategies to assure small businesses receive a fair share of the nearly $300 billion annual federal contracting budget. Chief among her accomplishments was the negotiation and implementation of a public/private partnership agreement with General Motors, Ford, and Daimler Chrysler under which the three auto makers increased purchases from minority-owned businesses by more than $3 billion over a three year period.

Ms. Roussel holds an MBA from the University of Maryland, and is a native of New Orleans, LA.

Steve Sims

Vice President National Minority Supplier Development Council, Inc. Steven Sims serves as vice president for programs and field operations for the National Minority Supplier Development Council. He is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of national programs, projects and technical assistance, which support the national office as well as affiliated regional councils. He also represents NMSDC as its government relations representative, a position he originally established in 1991.

His most recent accomplishment was the establishment of a sister organization to NMSDC in Brazil called INTEGRARE whose purpose is to replicate the NMSDC model. He serves/or has served as the NMSDC representative on several association groups including the Small Business Administration Procurement Roundtable, MED Week National Conference Planning Committee, and The Minority Business Summit Committee.

Mr. Sims was a co-founder of the Minority Business Summit Committee, a consortium of minority business organizations focused on minority supplier procurement issues and public policy.

Mr. Sims received his BA and MS from Columbia University.

Diverse Business Enablement Manager Exelon Emmett T. Vaughn joined Exelon as the diverse business enablement manager in June of 2005. Prior to joining Exelon, he managed his own business consulting practice focusing on diversity and business development strategies for Fortune 500 corporations, small businesses, public sector agencies, and not-for-profit organizations.

His passion for business diversity was cultivated while working as a senior consultant for RGMA Management Consulting, based in Chicago. He led client engagements in retail and consumer products industries as well public sector economic development projects. As an entrepreneur, he developed a substantive portfolio of clients in Chicago, Illinois, Dallas, Texas and Los Angeles, California. Honoring James W. Compton

The Chicago United James W. Compton Research Competition is a national program that has been designed to support the research and advocacy work of Chicago United. In addition we honor the work of James W. Compton, retired chief executive officer of the Chicago Urban League, and founding member of Chicago United who dedicated 35 years of service and commitment to issues facing people of color, most notably, achieving economic parity. His achievements span more than three decades and include contributions to many groundbreaking policies and legislation.

Chicago United is the catalyst driving business leaders to maximize economic impact for all races. A corporate membership organization, founded in 1968, its mission is to bring together diverse business leaders to improve race relations and increase access to opportunities for people of color in the Chicago Metropolitan area. Chicago United develops programs and advocates policies that build leadership relationships across racial groups to foster conditions of equal access to opportunities in executive level management, corporate governance and business diversity.

This research competition has been designed for business school graduate students to contribute to the body of research bringing national attention to the impact of diversity in corporate governance, executive management and business partnerships in major corporations. The award-winning team will be presented with a monetary award and the research study will be published and distributed at Chicago United’s annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and Bridge Awards Dinner.

The research competition guidelines will be submitted to business schools in the first quarter of 2007.

2006 C H ICAGO U N ITED B R I DGE AWAR DS The Bridge Award represents the first national award that honors a CEO who is an advocate for multiracial diversity in corporate governance. In keeping with the spirit of our advocacy in support of the development of multiracial participation at all levels in business, this award brings visibility to those who have managed change and inspired others to follow.

Chicago United (CU) established the Bridge Award during its inaugural Changing Color of Leadership Conference in November of 2004. The award celebrates the accomplishments of a chief executive officer of a publicly held corporation who has inspired and supported diversity on its board of directors. The award also recognizes a corporation’s commitment to diversity in senior level management and its business partnerships among diverse firms.

Our efforts focused on the Fortune 100 and the Chicago Metro 100 to select this year’s recipients of the National Bridge Award and the Chicago Bridge Award. After conducting a rigorous examination of publicly available company data, CU reviewed five national and five Chicago-area companies with diverse boards of directors based on a pre-determined threshold of diverse board member participation.

The National Bridge Award serves to honor the exemplary practices of a Fortune 100 corporation. The Chicago Bridge Award serves to honor a corporation supporting the development of a vibrant and richly diverse business community in the Chicago region through successful board diversity.

Each company was evaluated on quantitative and qualitative data by an internal and external committee. The committees consisted of corporate and non-profit executives, entrepreneurs and academicians, and were selected based on their neutrality and experience. The committees were provided with rating/ranking criteria and a cumulative point system for the award selection process.

The Advocate Award celebrates the accomplishments of a public- or private-sector citizen who actively recognizes the importance of diversity to our country’s economy and global competitiveness. The recipient must have demonstrated, through meritorious public or private sector service, successful strategies for stimulating and promoting inclusion in public or private sector governance, workforces and business partnerships; and their efforts to leverage their position to continue to elevate the discussion of inclusion.

We applaud the 2006 Bridge Advocate and Bridge Award recipients. They truly are the champions for diversity in governance, management, and business partnerships. Their leadership, vision, and commitment will continue to foster innovative approaches to achieving diversity in corporate governance throughout the business community.

As founder of Ariel Capital Management, LLC, John is the father of the investment and business philosophy that guides the firm today. As the firm’s chief investment officer, he manages Ariel’s small and mid-cap institutional portfolios as well as Ariel Fund and Ariel Appreciation Fund. Moreover, since Ariel’s founding, John has shepherded the growth of assets under management to more than $16 billion.

Prior to founding Ariel, John worked for 2 1⁄2 years at the investment banking firm of William Blair & Company in Chicago. While at Blair, he refined the value-oriented investment philosophy that he had begun to develop as a college student at Princeton University. At Princeton, John studied economics and served as captain of the varsity basketball team his senior year. He is a recipient of the B.F. Bunn Trophy, an award given to the basketball team member who best exemplifies leadership both on and off the court.

John serves on the board of directors of Aon Corporation; Bally Total Fitness Holding Corporation; Exelon Corporation and McDonald’s Corporation. President and Chief Executive Officer Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Lee Scott is president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the largest retailer in the world with more than 6,000 stores in 15 countries and more than 1.7 million associates worldwide.

Scott joined Wal-Mart in 1979 as an assistant director in the logistics division, rising through the ranks to executive vice president of logistics in 1993 and executive vice president of merchandise in 1995.

He became president and chief executive officer of the Wal-Mart Stores USA division in 1998; chief operating officer and vice chairman for the corporation in 1999, and president and CEO in 2000.

Under Scott’s leadership, Wal-Mart has continued to grow and improve its business formats and merchandise selections at Wal-Mart discount stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets; SAM’S CLUBS; international operations; and Walmart.com.

In addition to operational improvements, Scott is recognized for people development, including the launch of a corporate diversity initiative. In 2005, he launched an aggressive corporate environmental sustainability initiative, leveraging Wal-Mart’s global reach in three key areas: renewable energy, zero waste and sustainable products.

Scott serves on the board of directors of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and the United Negro College Fund.

A native of Joplin, Missouri, he received his bachelor of science degree in business from Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas. He has also completed the executive development programs at Penn State University and Columbia University. He and his wife, Linda, have two children, Eric and Wyatt.

JAMES SKINNER

Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer McDonald’s Corporation Jim Skinner was elected McDonald’s vice chairman and chief executive officer by McDonald’s Board of Directors in November 2004. Prior to being named chief executive officer, Skinner served as vice chairman of McDonald’s Corporation. In his previous role as vice chairman, Skinner had management responsibility for Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) and Latin America, in addition to overseeing most corporate staff functions. Since the beginning of 2004, he was accountable for McDonald’s Japan Limited, McDonald’s second-largest market with nearly 4,000 restaurants.

Skinner has held numerous leadership positions in his tenure with the corporation.

Before becoming vice chairman, he served as president and chief operating officer of the McDonald’s Restaurant Group with operating accountability for the company’s more than 30,000 McDonald’s restaurants in 118 countries at the time.

Prior to that, Skinner served as president and chief operating officer of McDonald’s Europe, Asia, Pacific and Middle East, with management responsibilities for the nearly 12,500 restaurants operating in those geographic sectors.

From 1997 to 2001, Skinner was president of McDonald’s Europe. Before that, he was executive vice president and international relationship partner for Central Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India from 1995 to 1997.

He joined McDonald’s international management team in 1992 as senior vice president and relationship partner, overseeing McDonald’s development in Central Europe, Middle East, Africa, and India.

Skinner began his career with McDonald’s in 1971 as a restaurant manager trainee in Carpentersville, Illinois. He advanced quickly and held numerous positions in the U.S. company, including director of field operations, market manager, regional vice president and U.S. senior vice president and zone manager.

In addition, he has twice served as an advisory director to McDonald’s Corporation’s Board of Directors. Currently, he serves on the board of McDonald’s Corporation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Walgreen Company, and ITW (Illinois Tool Works).

Principal Anchor, CNN (1980-2001) On February 28, 2001, Bernard Shaw stepped back from his daily routine as Cable News Network’s (CNN’s) principal anchor, ending his co-anchoring duties (with Judy Woodruff) on Inside Politics – the nation’s only daily program devoted exclusively to political news.

Shaw has begun to write books, including his autobiography. He has joined the lecture circuit, is tending to his garden; and, has decided to “give back to my wifely friend Linda, her husband, and our adult daughter and son, their father.” His so doing brings to an active end nearly four decades of an illustrious broadcast career.

Shaw was one of three CNN reporters who captivated a worldwide audience of more than one billion with continuous coverage of the first night of the Allied Forces’ bombing of Baghdad during “Operation Desert Storm.” Shaw was in the Iraqi capital to update his exclusive interview with President Saddam Hussein conducted in October 1990.

As a result of that unprecedented coverage, Shaw received numerous international as well as national awards and honors. He received the Eduard Rhein Foundation’s Cultural Journalistic Award, marking the first time that the Foundation presented this award to a non-German. The Italian government honored him with its President’s Award, presented to those leaders who have actively contributed to development, innovation, and cooperation; and finally, Shaw was the recipient of the coveted David Brinkley Award for Excellence in Communication from Barry University (Miami, FL).

Shaw studied history at the University of Illinois. In 1991, the University of Illinois Foundation announced the establishment of the Bernard Shaw Endowment Fund, creating scholarships at the University’s Chicago campus in his honor. Shaw has personally contributed more than $300,000 to the fund – his way of “giving back” some of what has been given to him. The grants are awarded annually to qualified students needing financial aid, with preference given to minority and women liberal arts majors who best represent those values and interests exemplified by Shaw. In May 1993, the University awarded Shaw an honorary doctor of humane letters degree for his outstanding contributions and endeavors. He has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts (1994), and Francis Marion College in Florence, South Carolina (1985).

A Chicago native, Shaw and his wife Linda reside in Takoma Park, Maryland.
