a note from the chair and the president Welcome to Symphony Center. We are delighted that you have joined us this spring for an array of exceptional performances.

At the end of March, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returns to Chicago to conduct the world premiere of Orpheus Undone by the CSO’s former Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli; Bruckner’s Second Symphony; and Mahler’s beautiful RückertLieder, as sung by mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča in her CSO debut and for the annual Symphony Ball concert.

The following week, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins Muti and the CSO in Britten’s Piano Concerto.

When he returns in late April, Muti leads the world premiere of current Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, in addition to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony and Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto no. 2, featuring CSO Principal Bass Alexander Hanna as soloist.

For Muti’s final residency of the season, in June, he and the Orchestra perform Brahms’s First Symphony and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. These concerts are followed by the highly anticipated performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, featuring an incredible cast of singers and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and is not be missed. The CSO and Muti conclude the season with a special free-admission Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park on June 27.

In addition to concerts with Maestro Muti, the Orchestra welcomes returning guest conductors Jaap van Zweden, Julian Rachlin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and James Gaffigan, and Klaus Mäkelä and Karina Canellakis in their debuts.

The Symphony Center Presents Piano series features Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, Evgeny Kissin, and Denis Kozhukhin in his debut. The SCP Jazz series continues with performances by Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade in A MoodSwing Reunion and double-bill performances by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and pianist Bill Charlap with the Artemis jazz ensemble and Sean Jones’s Dizzy Spellz with the Thaddeus Tukes Quintet. Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant rounds out the season.

R

iccardo Muti’s final season as music director pays tribute to his remarkable bond with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and celebrates the communicative power of his music making that has galvanized Chicago audiences over these past thirteen years.

Muti’s concerts combine classics with discoveries, and reunite him with longtime colleagues and friends. Each program highlights a different aspect of the acclaimed Muti-CSO partnership, now at its peak after playing some 500 concerts together—reviving signature pieces, showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, and inviting beloved guest artists back to our stage.

Throughout the season, Muti will conduct key works from his Chicago years—Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, which capped his first concert with the Orchestra fifty years ago

next summer; and Respighi’s Pines of Rome, the dazzling finale of his first concert as music director, in Millennium Park in 2010. Muti will return to music by Schubert and Tchaikovsky, whose complete symphonies he surveyed so memorably with the Orchestra. And he is reuniting with pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Julia Fischer, and pianist Maurizio Pollini, who makes his first appearance with the Orchestra in a decade. Continuing his annual tradition of showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, Muti joins Concertmaster Robert Chen in Mozart, longtime Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny in the concerto Lalo Schifrin wrote with him in mind, and David Herbert, one of Muti’s earliest principal appointments, in William Kraft’s First Timpani Concerto.

For the first time in Chicago, Muti will lead Rachmaninov’s haunting Second Symphony and Prokofiev’s dazzling Fifth. He will give

In February, Phillip Huscher met with Riccardo Muti to discuss upcoming performances as well as reflections on his time as music director and his enduring relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is an excerpt from their conversation.

Phillip Huscher: In September, I was so struck that after a year and a half, it took one rehearsal with the Orchestra to get back to where you left off, like best friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.

Riccardo Muti: Sì, my years with this orchestra have been twelve years of beautiful musical life. Never friction. Everything was always very natural, very friendly, and the atmosphere has been unique. I love this orchestra.

PH: You have appointed twenty-five players.

RM: Twenty-five? I didn’t remember the number, but one thing I know, twenty-five fantastic players. Every time a music director, together with the committee, chooses a new player, it is a huge responsibility. It means that you are choosing a player for the next thirty, forty years. I think that in this case, I have chosen—together with my colleagues—twenty-five wonderful musicians. (continued)

PH: Emerging from COVID, what are your thoughts now on performances in the concert hall versus streaming and recording?

RM: Of course, the future is bringing new media—new possibilities. There is some advantage to that. For example, you can do a concert in Chicago, or in Berlin, or Vienna, and it can be seen immediately in every part of the world. That means you don’t have only 2,000 or 3,000 people that listen to the concert, but, theoretically, endless people. This is something that culturally can be an advantage. But music should be experienced live, directly. Because the presence of the public is very important to give a certain energy, positive or negative, to the performers. . . . We play for them. Without the public, we have no reason to exist.

PH: The bond you have with the CSO is very strong. What are your hopes for the Orchestra?

RM: My dream for the future is that this orchestra can speak to the world from Chicago, and not only to the Chicago audience. . . . The world wants to have the Chicago Symphony, so this is a responsibility that important people— culturally speaking and economically speaking—must keep in mind. It is a responsibility to have this great orchestra here and to make it possible for this orchestra to speak to the world every day. It is a dream. It is a need for the new generations.

the U.S. premiere of the recently discovered Solemn Prelude by the British composer of African descent Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and unveil a new work by Jessie Montgomery, the sixth Mead Composer-in-Residence to be appointed by Muti. At the season’s end, he will lead his first Chicago performances of Beethoven’s sublime Missa solemnis, a towering work of sacred vocal music that is a testament to the very soul and spirit of music.

Program after program is designed to demonstrate our tenth music director’s unique passion for communicating the solace and joy that music alone can deliver. In Muti’s hands, these are pieces that draw us in with their quiet depth, or thrill us with unexpected drama and

Highlights of the 2022–23 Season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center Presents On March 29, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association announced its programming for the 2022–23 season. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 132nd season celebrates the musical legacy of Riccardo Muti and his thirteen seasons as the CSO’s tenth music director. This important chapter in the CSO’s history has been defined by a profound artistic connection between the Maestro and Orchestra that has resulted in exceptional music making admired by listeners in Chicago and around the world.

PREMIERES AND NEW WORKS Throughout the 2022–23 season, the CSO performs a wide variety of repertoire, including several works receiving their U.S. premiere or first CSO performances. Riccardo Muti will conduct the world premiere of a CSO Commission by Mead Composerin-Residence Jessie Montgomery and the U.S. premiere of ColeridgeTaylor’s Solemn Prelude.

Other U.S. premieres include the CSO co-commissioned works Diary of a Madman, a cello concerto by Lera Auerbach, written for and performed by Gautier Capuçon and conducted

SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS Symphony Center Presents (SCP) includes concerts highlighting the artistry of internationally recognized musicians in a variety of genres.

The SCP Orchestra series returns in the 2022–23 season, offering Chicago audiences the opportunity to hear performances by other great orchestras from around the world. The season includes performances by the Berliner Philharmoniker, which has not appeared in Chicago in a dozen years, with its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, with its new music director Gustavo Gimeno and violin soloist Maria Dueñas, as part of its centennial season tour.

This year’s SCP Chamber Music series celebrates exceptional string players and ensembles.

Violinist Midori collaborates with pianist JeanYves Thibaudet performing three of Beethoven’s violin sonatas including the Kreutzer. AnneSophie Mutter returns with the Mutter Virtuosi, an ensemble of talented Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarship recipients. Violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Daniil Trifonov perform a recital in March, and later that month, CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn performs solo works for violin by J.S. Bach. The distinguished violinist and violist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth join the Jerusalem Quartet to perform string sextets by Dvořák and Brahms.

The SCP Chamber Music series finale in June features the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet before it retires from the concert stage after nearly fifty years. Pianist Emanuel Ax joins the quartet for a special guest appearance.

The SCP Piano series includes the return of David Fray, Leif Ove Andsnes, Marc-André Hamelin, Emanuel Ax, and Evgeny Kissin. Two remarkable young talents make their series debuts in spring recitals, including Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. The series finale provides a rare opportunity to hear acclaimed Chopin specialist Maria João Pires.

In addition to the aforementioned SCP series, special concerts include Itzhak Perlman’s In the Fiddler’s House, an exploration of traditional

Klezmer music featuring Perlman performing with instrumentalist Hankus Stenky and Andy Statman, along with ensembles Brave Old World and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Next, tenor Juan Diego Flórez presents a recital with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. Finally, SCP and Lyric Opera of Chicago collaborate to bring together soprano Renée Fleming and pianist Evgeny Kissin in a unique recital program that features songs by Rachmaninov in honor of the composer’s 150th birthday anniversary.

World music offerings include Kodo, the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble, and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion.

Chanticleer and the CSO Brass will also perform their annual December concerts.

The acclaimed SCP Jazz series opens with Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés performing an SCP Jazz co-commission, his four-movement suite La Creación (The Creation) for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion, and vocals. Other artists include the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with vocalist Catherine Russell, tenor saxophonist Camille Thurman, and Hammond B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco; the Maria Schneider Orchestra; pianist, composer, and social activist Danilo Pérez; NEA Jazz Master and bassist Dave Holland with pianist Kenny Barron, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, and drummer Obed Calvaire; and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will have a two-day residency. In addition, the Monterey Jazz Festival tours to Chicago with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling; saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin; and pianist Christian Sands, who directs and performs with his trio members, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.

F

or young musicians, the experience of gathering with like-minded peers and being mentored by professionals from the classical-music field offers a priceless opportunity for learning and growth. Since it began in 2009, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Chicago Youth in Music Festival has taken this twofold approach, bringing together students from school orchestras and bands, community youth ensembles, and music schools to participate in coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and prominent conductors such as the CSO’s Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti.

After being canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic, the festival returns in April 2022 with an ambitious nationwide partnership spanning ten cities and with a focus on supporting extraordinary young musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music.

A new component this year is a summit that invites music teachers, administrators, and families of music students to participate in strategic conversation and collaboration. In partnership with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and the National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network, the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute presents the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit.

The Negaunee Music Institute is a cofounder and member of the advisory council for the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, launched in the 2019–20 season, with the mission of preparing young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools and thus, ultimately helping to diversify American orchestras. The National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network is, “a national coalition that works to align, promote, and develop equitable opportunities and

inclusive environments to advance BIPOC [Black, indigenous, and people of color] instrumentalists to thrive in classical music.”

Representatives of similar programs from cities across the United States have eagerly agreed to participate. The fifty-two students selected for the 2022 Festival Orchestra were identified through a competitive audition process and represent programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Washington, D.C. According to Director of Education and the Negaunee Music Institute Jonathan McCormick, it’s important for students, “to engage with peers who have similar dreams, aspirations, and challenges. The Youth in Music Festival will be a rigorous musical experience and a social event as well, so the orchestra can really bond.”

From April 9 to 11, students participate in sectional rehearsals and coaching sessions with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Chicago Sinfonietta in addition to attending a CSO concert conducted by Riccardo Muti.

By rehearsing with professional musicians, younger musicians experience firsthand the high level of technique and artistry to which they may aspire. “It’s so meaningful to play alongside a musician who is more advanced than you are,” McCormick said. “This can really accelerate a student’s growth.”

Sonata No. 18 in E-flat Major, Op. 31, No. 3 composed 1802

In the summer of 1802, Beethoven’s physician ordered him to leave Vienna and take rooms in Heiligenstadt, today a friendly suburb at the northern terminus of the city’s subway system, but two centuries ago a quiet village with a view of the Danube across the river’s rich flood plain.

It was three years earlier, in 1799, that Beethoven first noticed a disturbing ringing and buzzing in his ears, and he sought medical attention for the problem soon thereafter. He tried numerous cures for his malady, as well as for his chronic colic, including oil of almonds, hot and cold baths, soaking in the Danube, pills, and herbs.

For a short time, he even considered the modish treatment of electric shock. On the advice of his latest doctor, Beethoven left the noisy city for the quiet countryside with the assurance that the lack of stimulation would be beneficial to his hearing and his general health.

On October 6, 1802, following several months of wrestling with his diminishing hearing (as well as a constant digestive distress and the wreck of a recent affair of the heart), Beethoven penned the most famous letter ever written by a musician—the Heiligenstadt Testament.

Intended as a will written to his brothers (it was never sent, though he kept it among his papers, to be found after his death), it is a cry of despair over his fate, perhaps a necessary and self-induced soul cleansing in those pre-Freudian days.

“O Providence—grant me at last but one day of pure joy—it is so long since real joy echoed in my heart,” he lamented. Nevertheless—and this is

the miracle—he not only poured his energy into self-pity, but he also channeled it into music.

The symphonies nos. 2–5, a dozen piano sonatas, the Fourth Piano Concerto and Triple Concerto, Fidelio, three violin (op. 30) sonatas, six piano sonatas, many songs, chamber works, and keyboard compositions were all created between 1802 and 1806.

T

he three piano sonatas of op. 31 that Beethoven completed during the summer of 1802 in Heiligenstadt stand at the threshold of a new creative language, the dynamic and dramatic musical speech that characterizes the creations of his so-called second period. The E-flat major sonata, op. 31, no. 3, like the Second Symphony, also composed in 1802, is a sunny work that seems to belie the difficult time of its creation while embodying remarkable strides forward in the sophistication of its form and content. The sonata’s very first sound, a smiling chord topped with a blithe descending motive, commits the stylistic heresy of avoiding the work’s nominal tonality, a fundamental structural procedure of classical music. The home key (E-flat major) is grazed, and then toyed with again before the music proceeds to its second theme, an aerial melody displayed above a rippling Alberti bass figuration. The extraordinary thing about this opening section of the sonata is the manner in which Beethoven couched his iconoclasms in such suave musical language, making the revolutionary seem elegant, inevitable, and even beautiful. The development section deals mainly with permutations of the principal subject.

The recapitulation of the earlier themes, appropriately adjusted as to key, closes the movement.

dance piece that Beethoven perfected in his symphonies, but rather a duple-meter, sonata-form essay whose upward-striding main theme seems to have been joined when it was already in progress. The “scherzo-ish” aspect of this music (the word means “joke” in Italian) is provided by the spectral thematic skeletons that rise up to interrupt the marching progress of the main theme. This bold juxtaposition of moods occurs several times throughout the movement and lends it a haunting quality of cheerfulness tempered by some distant but palpable menace.

The movement that follows also contrasts two

very different types of music—the minuet that forms the outer sections of the three-part form (A–B–A) is serene and smoothly flowing, while the central trio jumps about the keyboard in a rather ungainly manner, splaying its chords high and low, and stumbling now and then on some unexpected dynamic changes. It is a movement such as Mozart would never have written.

The finale, another sonata form, is a whirlwind of incessant rhythmic energy modeled on the Italian tarantella and a dazzling showpiece of virtuosic pianism.

arnold schoenberg

Born September 13, 1874; Vienna, Austria Died July 13, 1951; Brentwood, California

After serving intermittently in the Austrian military during World War I, Schoenberg settled in Vienna, where he made a tenuous living by teaching a few private students, lecturing, and conducting an occasional concert. His energies at that time were focused primarily on establishing an organization for the promotion of new music, the Society for Private Musical Performances, which gave its inaugural concert in Vienna on December 29, 1918, with compositions by Scriabin (the piano sonatas nos. 4 and 7, played by the staunchest keyboard champion of the Viennese avant-garde composers, Edward Steuermann); Debussy (Proses lyriques); and Mahler (the Seventh Symphony, arranged for two pianos). Alban Berg, Schoenberg’s student

and colleague, explained the venture’s aims in its statutes: 1. Clear, well-prepared performances.

2. Frequent repetitions. 3. The performances must be withdrawn from the corrupting influence of publicity; that is, they must not be inspired by a spirit of competition and must be independent of applause and expressions of disapproval. This points to the important difference that is apparent when we compare the task of this Society with that of normal, present-day concert life, which the Society intends to keep definitely at a distance. This last sentence, translated, meant, “no critics allowed.”

The society went bravely on its way for the next three years, giving well over a hundred performances of music by Ravel, Debussy, Reger, Bartók, Berg, Webern, Wellesz, and Schoenberg himself, but the rapid depreciation of the Austrian currency forced the cessation of its activities by the end of

1921; a benefit concert in May 1921 featuring transcriptions of waltzes by Strauss for chamber ensembles by Berg, Webern, and Schoenberg, though a success, only delayed the inevitable by a few months.

During World War I, the activities of the society, and a crisis of stylistic direction, had prevented Schoenberg from issuing any new works since the infamous Pierrot lunaire of 1912 and the Four Songs with Orchestra of 1913–16.

He had not been inactive creatively, however, since he was deeply involved in devising a new system that would supersede traditional harmony and tonality, which had nearly reached a point of anarchy with the flamboyantly chromatic works of Mahler, Strauss, Zemlinsky, and Schoenberg and his disciples. Schoenberg tried out his gestating ideas in an oratorio entitled Jacob’s Ladder, begun perhaps as early as 1917, by using a technique, rooted in some of his earlier works (String Quartet no. 2, Five Orchestral Pieces, Pierrot lunaire), that allowed the permutation of small groups of pitches in a systematic way. By the summer of 1921, according to Joseph Rufer, his friend and the eventual cataloger of his compositions, he had attained his quest.

“Today,” Schoenberg told Rufer during a stroll in Traunkirchen in July, “I have discovered

something which will assure the supremacy of German music for the next hundred years.”

The discovery was the Twelve-Tone Theory, in which a “series” (also called a “tone row”) containing the twelve available pitches of the chromatic scale ordered according to the composer’s fiat served to generate all of the composition’s melodies, harmonies, and accompanying voices. Inherent in the system was the negation of conventional harmony and tonality. Having developed this revolutionary dogma, Schoenberg abandoned Jacob’s Ladder and started to apply his new system in three works—Five Piano Pieces (op. 23), Serenade for Baritone and Chamber Ensemble (op. 24), and Suite for Piano (op. 25)— whose creation proceeded more or less in tandem over the next two years. The Suite for Piano was the first work in which all of the movements were based on the same tone row.

Having abandoned the structural logic provided by traditional tonality, Schoenberg turned to the model of the old baroque keyboard suite to bring unity to his first fully serial, multi-movement piece. His op. 25 suite opens with a fantasia-like Präludium, which is followed by acerbic parodies of the Gavotte, Musette, Menuett and trio, and Gigue. Standing at the center of the suite is an Intermezzo of sweeping romantic intensity.

György Ligeti, one of music’s greatest modern masters, was born in 1923 to a Jewish family in the then Hungarian province of Transylvania. He studied composition at the

conservatory in his boyhood home of Kolozsvár during the early years of World War II, when he also managed to take some private lessons in Budapest with the noted Hungarian pianist and composer Pál Kadosa. In 1944, however, Ligeti, with many other Jews, was pressed by the Nazis into forced labor in dangerous situations, including working in a munitions dump just in front of the Russian advance. After the war, Ligeti continued his studies at the Budapest MARCH–JULY 2022

Academy of Music. He pursued field research in Romanian folk music for a short time following his graduation in 1949, but returned to the Budapest Academy a year later, when he was appointed professor of harmony, counterpoint, and analysis. He fled Hungary in the wake of the Russian occupation of 1956 and settled in Vienna.

He achieved his first wide recognition when his Apparitions for orchestra was performed at the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival in Cologne in 1960. Ligeti continued to compose prolifically while teaching in Europe and America, and received the Bach Prize of the City of Hamburg, the German Decoration of Merit, and many other prestigious honors.

In writing of his three books of etudes, Ligeti noted the many influences that flowed into them, from classical and vernacular to world music and geometry, but went on to say that, My etudes are neither jazz nor ChopinesqueDebussian music, neither African nor Nancarrow [best known for his intricate pieces for player piano], and certainly not mathematical constructs. I have written of influences and approaches, but what I actually compose is difficult to categorize: it is neither “avant-garde” nor “traditional,” neither tonal nor atonal. And in no way postmodern, as the ironic theatricalizing of the past is quite foreign to me. These are virtuosic piano pieces, etudes in the pianistic and compositional sense. They proceed from a very simple core idea, and lead from simplicity to great complexity: they behave like growing organisms.

Ligeti wrote of the creative impulse in the Sixth Etude of book 1 of 1985: In the Etude no. 6, Autumn in Warsaw, a single pianist, with only two hands, seems to play simultaneously at two, three, sometimes four different speeds. The piece is a sort of fugue with diminutions and augmentations from 3 to 4 to 5 to 7. My knowledge of the super-fast “elementary pulse” in African musical thinking made the polyrhythm (and “polytempo”) in this etude possible. But I am using only an idea from African notions of movement, not the music itself. In Africa, cycles or periods of constantly equal length are supported by a regular beat (which is usually danced, not played). The individual beats can be divided into two, three, sometimes even four or five “elementary units” or fast pulses. I employ neither the cyclic form nor the beats, but use rather the elementary pulse as an underlying grid-work.

In the spring of 1993, Ligeti was staying in an apartment along the Pacific coast for the American premiere of his Violin Concerto in Los Angeles. He especially enjoyed biking along the shore, but he was caught one morning in a terrifying storm several miles from home. “I had to cycle back against the wind,” he recalled. “I had no coat and was completely wet. After a while I could not ride at all.” After battling the storm for three hours and then fighting his way uphill to his apartment, he began the Etude no. 13, The Devil’s Staircase, which Richard Steinitz, in his 2003 study of Ligeti, characterized as “an endless climbing, a wild apocalypse, a staircase that was almost impossible to ascend.”

Scriabin composed his Sonata no. 3 in F-sharp Minor in 1897–98, soon after he had returned to Russia from the tour that established his reputation in Europe, married a young pianist named Vera Ivanovna Isakovich, and begun to imbibe the Theosophy of the Ukrainian occultist, spiritual medium, and writer Helena Blavatsky, which purported to reveal the mysteries of being, nature, and divinity. The F-sharp minor sonata was created at that nodal point in Scriabin’s philosophical evolution, and it is his first work to embody the fervent mysticism that became the driving creative force for the rest of his life.

He structured it in the traditional four movements—a dramatic opening movement in sonata form, scherzo, slow movement, and culminating finale—but intimated its expressive subtext with the descriptive title États d’âme (States of the Soul). Several years after the sonata was completed, Tatyana Schloezer, who was then his mistress and ultimately life companion (Scriabin and Vera were never divorced), made explicit the emotional progress of the Sonata no. 3.

She wrote, [First movement, Drammatico] The soul, free and wild, thrown into the whirlpool of suffering and strife. [Second movement, Allegretto] Apparent momentary and illusory respite; tired from suffering, the soul wants to forget, wants to sing and flourish, in spite of everything. But the light rhythm, the fragrant harmonies are just a cover through

which gleams the restless and languishing soul. [Third movement, Andante] A sea of feelings, tender and sorrowful: love, sorrow, vague desires, inexplicable thoughts, illusions of a delicate dream. [Finale, Presto con fuoco] From the depth of being rises the fearsome voice of creative man, whose victorious song resounds triumphantly. But too weak yet to reach the acme, he plunges, temporarily defeated, into the abyss of non-being.

espite the sonata’s modernity of thought and style, its first movement is disposed in classical sonata form based on two themes. The main theme comprises a quick leap upward in the bass; a rising, three-note, stepwise response; and a falling triplet figure.

The subsidiary subject is lyrical, almost dreamy.

Both ideas figure in the development section before being recapitulated in compressed versions. A coda based on the main theme brings the movement to a quiet, somewhat tentative, close. The Allegretto, more intermezzo than scherzo, takes an intriguingly harmonized strain of faintly martial character for its outer sections and a gentle yet playful theme for its central episode. The Andante, based on one of Scriabin’s most inspired melodies, is music for a tender, moonlit love scene, which, like romance in real life, passes through a period of sadness in a chromatic passage instructed to be played dolorosa (tearfully). A hushed reminiscence of the first movement provides a transition to the sonata-form finale, which begins in a tempestuous mood. An expressive alternative is provided by the sweet second subject, but the music then undertakes a long, developmental consideration of the tempestuous theme. The

sweet theme returns before giving way again to the stormy mood. Finally, the sonata seems to turn toward a triumphant close with a grandiloquent statement of the romantic theme of the

Andante, but this, too, is ultimately defeated by the tempest. The sonata comes to a stunningly abrupt ending as “the soul plunges into the abyss of non-being.”

Lavapiés from Iberia, Book 3, No. 3 composed 1906–09

Isaac Albéniz, a seminal figure in the musical life of his native Spain, learned the piano from his older sister when he was still an infant, and gave his first concert at the remarkable age of four. Albéniz toured Catalonia with his father and sister before the family moved in 1869 to Madrid, where he was enrolled at the conservatory and appeared frequently in concert. At ten, the precocious Isaac ran away from home to northern Spain, living by his wits and his talent, and then went to Cádiz, where the local governor threatened to return him to his family. Panicked by the thought, he stowed away on a steamer bound for Cuba.

There he lived hand-to-mouth for a while, but he soon found work playing in cafés, and eventually undertook a serendipitous concert tour through Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, and the United States before saving enough money to sail to England for more appearances. He ended up in Leipzig for some study at the city’s conservatory.

Albéniz returned to Madrid in 1877 just long enough to secure a royal scholarship for study at the Brussels Conservatory. After winning the school’s first prize for piano in 1878, he began another long tour of South America and the United States in 1880. In 1883, he returned to Barcelona to play and teach, and there met Felipe

Pedrell, the composer and pioneering scholar of Spanish music, who inspired him to use native songs and dances as the basis of his original compositions. Albéniz found life as a pianist in Spain difficult, however, and he went to Paris in 1889, where he met with much acclaim and befriended such prominent musicians as d’Indy, Dukas, Fauré, and Chausson. From 1890 to 1893, Albéniz lived in London and then returned to Paris, composing, renewing friendships, and teaching piano at the Schola Cantorum. The death of his mother in 1900 brought him back to Barcelona, but his own ill health (he suffered for years from kidney disease) and his failure to arrange performances of his works sent him again to Paris in 1902; a year later, he moved to Nice. Just one week before his death, on May 18, 1909, at Cambo-lesBains in the French Pyrenees, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor by the French government.

avapiés (from book 3 of the piano suite Iberia) is named for an old district in central Madrid—the Jewish quarter until the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, a working-class neighborhood as Albéniz knew it, and today a multiethnic enclave inhabited by people from around the world. The area takes its name from the traditional foot-washing ritual held at the local church on Holy Thursday. The music’s vibrancy, raucous dissonances, and barrel organ themes suggest the colorful street life of Lavapiés.

The fusion of jazz and classical styles that was seeded in 1924 by George Gershwin’s epochal Rhapsody in Blue is usually thought to be a Western phenomenon, but Ukrainian composer and pianist Nikolai Kapustin proved that such a cross-genre musical view has had a far wider influence. Kapustin was born in 1937 in Gorlovka in eastern Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, began playing piano at the age of seven and composing at thirteen, and attended the Moscow Conservatory as a piano student of the eminent Alexander Goldenweiser, who grounded him thoroughly in the Russian classical traditions. Kapustin studied jazz along with the classics while in school, and he made his formal debut in 1957 at the Sixth International Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow playing his own Concertino, op. 1, which he called “a very jazzy piece.” For the next three decades, he performed, toured, and recorded with several leading Russian big bands and light-music orchestras as well as with his own quintet while composing in a manner that he described as “a fusion between classical forms and a jazzy idiom.”

After the mid-1980s, when he gave up playing in public, Kapustin lived modestly in a Moscow flat, composing steadily and traveling little but frequently recording his own music. His works— fifteen piano sonatas; concertos for piano, trumpet, saxophone, double bass, cello, and violin;

orchestra and big band pieces; chamber music; and many compositions for solo piano—were almost unknown outside Russia until British pianist Steven Osborne released a recording of the first two sonatas and several preludes in jazz style in 2000; Marc-André Hamelin’s 2004 CD was the first of an increasing number of subsequent recordings now available in the West, several of them by Kapustin himself. Eckart Runge, cellist of Germany’s Artemis String Quartet, which performed Kapustin’s 1989 String Quartet internationally, noted that the composer wrote in an, . . . alluring, somewhat disturbing and uniquely genuine musical language: a complex, virtuosic blend of rhythmic and harmonic elements of jazz, blues, soul, rock, and popular music with an almost contradictory conservatism in the choice of classical forms, suffused with expression ranging from lighthearted to biting humor as well as a deep, dark, Russian ambience.

apustin’s Twenty-Four Preludes in Jazz Style date from 1989. Number 11 (Andante) is a smoky jazz waltz; no. 10 (Allegro) is a showpiece of digital dexterity that creates the impression of swift, muscular movement and big-city energy.

profiles Yuja Wang Piano Pianist Yuja Wang is celebrated for her charismatic artistry, emotional honesty, and captivating stage presence. She has performed with the world’s most venerated conductors, musicians, and ensembles, and is renowned not only for her virtuosity, but also for her spontaneous and lively performances, famously telling the New York Times “I firmly believe every program should have its own life, and be a representation of how I feel at the moment.” This skill and charisma was recently demonstrated in her performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no. 2 at Carnegie Hall’s Opening Night Gala in October 2021, following its historic 572 days of closure.

Yuja Wang was born into a musical family in Beijing, China. After childhood piano studies, she received advanced training in Canada and at the Curtis Institute of Music under Gary Graffman. Her international breakthrough came

in 2007, when she replaced Martha Argerich as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Two years later, she signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, and has since established her place among the world’s leading artists, with a succession of critically acclaimed performances and recordings. She was named Musical America’s Artist of the Year in 2017, and in 2021 received an Opus Klassik Award for her world-premiere recording of John Adams’s Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes? with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.

As a chamber musician, Yuja Wang has developed long-lasting partnerships with several leading artists, notably violinist Leonidas Kavakos, with whom she has recorded the violin sonatas of Brahms and will perform duo recitals in America this fall. In 2022, Yuja Wang embarks on a highly anticipated international recital tour, which sees her perform in worldclass venues across North America, Europe, and Asia, astounding audiences once more with her flair, technical ability, and exceptional artistry in a wide-ranging program to include Ligeti, Beethoven, and Kapustin.
