a note from the chair and the president Welcome to Symphony Center. We are delighted that you have joined us this spring for an array of exceptional performances.

At the end of March, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returns to Chicago to conduct the world premiere of Orpheus Undone by the CSO’s former Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli; Bruckner’s Second Symphony; and Mahler’s beautiful RückertLieder, as sung by mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča in her CSO debut and for the annual Symphony Ball concert.

The following week, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins Muti and the CSO in Britten’s Piano Concerto.

When he returns in late April, Muti leads the world premiere of current Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, in addition to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony and Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto no. 2, featuring CSO Principal Bass Alexander Hanna as soloist.

For Muti’s final residency of the season, in June, he and the Orchestra perform Brahms’s First Symphony and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. These concerts are followed by the highly anticipated performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, featuring an incredible cast of singers and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and is not be missed. The CSO and Muti conclude the season with a special free-admission Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park on June 27.

In addition to concerts with Maestro Muti, the Orchestra welcomes returning guest conductors Jaap van Zweden, Julian Rachlin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and James Gaffigan, and Klaus Mäkelä and Karina Canellakis in their debuts.

The Symphony Center Presents Piano series features Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, Evgeny Kissin, and Denis Kozhukhin in his debut. The SCP Jazz series continues with performances by Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade in A MoodSwing Reunion and double-bill performances by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and pianist Bill Charlap with the Artemis jazz ensemble and Sean Jones’s Dizzy Spellz with the Thaddeus Tukes Quintet. Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant rounds out the season.

R

iccardo Muti’s final season as music director pays tribute to his remarkable bond with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and celebrates the communicative power of his music making that has galvanized Chicago audiences over these past thirteen years.

Muti’s concerts combine classics with discoveries, and reunite him with longtime colleagues and friends. Each program highlights a different aspect of the acclaimed Muti-CSO partnership, now at its peak after playing some 500 concerts together—reviving signature pieces, showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, and inviting beloved guest artists back to our stage.

Throughout the season, Muti will conduct key works from his Chicago years—Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, which capped his first concert with the Orchestra fifty years ago

next summer; and Respighi’s Pines of Rome, the dazzling finale of his first concert as music director, in Millennium Park in 2010. Muti will return to music by Schubert and Tchaikovsky, whose complete symphonies he surveyed so memorably with the Orchestra. And he is reuniting with pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Julia Fischer, and pianist Maurizio Pollini, who makes his first appearance with the Orchestra in a decade. Continuing his annual tradition of showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, Muti joins Concertmaster Robert Chen in Mozart, longtime Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny in the concerto Lalo Schifrin wrote with him in mind, and David Herbert, one of Muti’s earliest principal appointments, in William Kraft’s First Timpani Concerto.

For the first time in Chicago, Muti will lead Rachmaninov’s haunting Second Symphony and Prokofiev’s dazzling Fifth. He will give

In February, Phillip Huscher met with Riccardo Muti to discuss upcoming performances as well as reflections on his time as music director and his enduring relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is an excerpt from their conversation.

Phillip Huscher: In September, I was so struck that after a year and a half, it took one rehearsal with the Orchestra to get back to where you left off, like best friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.

Riccardo Muti: Sì, my years with this orchestra have been twelve years of beautiful musical life. Never friction. Everything was always very natural, very friendly, and the atmosphere has been unique. I love this orchestra.

PH: You have appointed twenty-five players.

RM: Twenty-five? I didn’t remember the number, but one thing I know, twenty-five fantastic players. Every time a music director, together with the committee, chooses a new player, it is a huge responsibility. It means that you are choosing a player for the next thirty, forty years. I think that in this case, I have chosen—together with my colleagues—twenty-five wonderful musicians. (continued)

PH: Emerging from COVID, what are your thoughts now on performances in the concert hall versus streaming and recording?

RM: Of course, the future is bringing new media—new possibilities. There is some advantage to that. For example, you can do a concert in Chicago, or in Berlin, or Vienna, and it can be seen immediately in every part of the world. That means you don’t have only 2,000 or 3,000 people that listen to the concert, but, theoretically, endless people. This is something that culturally can be an advantage. But music should be experienced live, directly. Because the presence of the public is very important to give a certain energy, positive or negative, to the performers. . . . We play for them. Without the public, we have no reason to exist.

PH: The bond you have with the CSO is very strong. What are your hopes for the Orchestra?

RM: My dream for the future is that this orchestra can speak to the world from Chicago, and not only to the Chicago audience. . . . The world wants to have the Chicago Symphony, so this is a responsibility that important people— culturally speaking and economically speaking—must keep in mind. It is a responsibility to have this great orchestra here and to make it possible for this orchestra to speak to the world every day. It is a dream. It is a need for the new generations.

the U.S. premiere of the recently discovered Solemn Prelude by the British composer of African descent Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and unveil a new work by Jessie Montgomery, the sixth Mead Composer-in-Residence to be appointed by Muti. At the season’s end, he will lead his first Chicago performances of Beethoven’s sublime Missa solemnis, a towering work of sacred vocal music that is a testament to the very soul and spirit of music.

Program after program is designed to demonstrate our tenth music director’s unique passion for communicating the solace and joy that music alone can deliver. In Muti’s hands, these are pieces that draw us in with their quiet depth, or thrill us with unexpected drama and

Highlights of the 2022–23 Season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center Presents On March 29, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association announced its programming for the 2022–23 season. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 132nd season celebrates the musical legacy of Riccardo Muti and his thirteen seasons as the CSO’s tenth music director. This important chapter in the CSO’s history has been defined by a profound artistic connection between the Maestro and Orchestra that has resulted in exceptional music making admired by listeners in Chicago and around the world.

PREMIERES AND NEW WORKS Throughout the 2022–23 season, the CSO performs a wide variety of repertoire, including several works receiving their U.S. premiere or first CSO performances. Riccardo Muti will conduct the world premiere of a CSO Commission by Mead Composerin-Residence Jessie Montgomery and the U.S. premiere of ColeridgeTaylor’s Solemn Prelude.

Other U.S. premieres include the CSO co-commissioned works Diary of a Madman, a cello concerto by Lera Auerbach, written for and performed by Gautier Capuçon and conducted

SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS Symphony Center Presents (SCP) includes concerts highlighting the artistry of internationally recognized musicians in a variety of genres.

The SCP Orchestra series returns in the 2022–23 season, offering Chicago audiences the opportunity to hear performances by other great orchestras from around the world. The season includes performances by the Berliner Philharmoniker, which has not appeared in Chicago in a dozen years, with its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, with its new music director Gustavo Gimeno and violin soloist Maria Dueñas, as part of its centennial season tour.

This year’s SCP Chamber Music series celebrates exceptional string players and ensembles.

Violinist Midori collaborates with pianist JeanYves Thibaudet performing three of Beethoven’s violin sonatas including the Kreutzer. AnneSophie Mutter returns with the Mutter Virtuosi, an ensemble of talented Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarship recipients. Violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Daniil Trifonov perform a recital in March, and later that month, CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn performs solo works for violin by J.S. Bach. The distinguished violinist and violist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth join the Jerusalem Quartet to perform string sextets by Dvořák and Brahms.

The SCP Chamber Music series finale in June features the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet before it retires from the concert stage after nearly fifty years. Pianist Emanuel Ax joins the quartet for a special guest appearance.

The SCP Piano series includes the return of David Fray, Leif Ove Andsnes, Marc-André Hamelin, Emanuel Ax, and Evgeny Kissin. Two remarkable young talents make their series debuts in spring recitals, including Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. The series finale provides a rare opportunity to hear acclaimed Chopin specialist Maria João Pires.

In addition to the aforementioned SCP series, special concerts include Itzhak Perlman’s In the Fiddler’s House, an exploration of traditional

Klezmer music featuring Perlman performing with instrumentalist Hankus Stenky and Andy Statman, along with ensembles Brave Old World and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Next, tenor Juan Diego Flórez presents a recital with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. Finally, SCP and Lyric Opera of Chicago collaborate to bring together soprano Renée Fleming and pianist Evgeny Kissin in a unique recital program that features songs by Rachmaninov in honor of the composer’s 150th birthday anniversary.

World music offerings include Kodo, the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble, and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion.

Chanticleer and the CSO Brass will also perform their annual December concerts.

The acclaimed SCP Jazz series opens with Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés performing an SCP Jazz co-commission, his four-movement suite La Creación (The Creation) for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion, and vocals. Other artists include the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with vocalist Catherine Russell, tenor saxophonist Camille Thurman, and Hammond B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco; the Maria Schneider Orchestra; pianist, composer, and social activist Danilo Pérez; NEA Jazz Master and bassist Dave Holland with pianist Kenny Barron, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, and drummer Obed Calvaire; and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will have a two-day residency. In addition, the Monterey Jazz Festival tours to Chicago with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling; saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin; and pianist Christian Sands, who directs and performs with his trio members, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.

F

or young musicians, the experience of gathering with like-minded peers and being mentored by professionals from the classical-music field offers a priceless opportunity for learning and growth. Since it began in 2009, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Chicago Youth in Music Festival has taken this twofold approach, bringing together students from school orchestras and bands, community youth ensembles, and music schools to participate in coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and prominent conductors such as the CSO’s Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti.

After being canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic, the festival returns in April 2022 with an ambitious nationwide partnership spanning ten cities and with a focus on supporting extraordinary young musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music.

A new component this year is a summit that invites music teachers, administrators, and families of music students to participate in strategic conversation and collaboration. In partnership with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and the National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network, the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute presents the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit.

The Negaunee Music Institute is a cofounder and member of the advisory council for the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, launched in the 2019–20 season, with the mission of preparing young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools and thus, ultimately helping to diversify American orchestras. The National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network is, “a national coalition that works to align, promote, and develop equitable opportunities and

inclusive environments to advance BIPOC [Black, indigenous, and people of color] instrumentalists to thrive in classical music.”

Representatives of similar programs from cities across the United States have eagerly agreed to participate. The fifty-two students selected for the 2022 Festival Orchestra were identified through a competitive audition process and represent programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Washington, D.C. According to Director of Education and the Negaunee Music Institute Jonathan McCormick, it’s important for students, “to engage with peers who have similar dreams, aspirations, and challenges. The Youth in Music Festival will be a rigorous musical experience and a social event as well, so the orchestra can really bond.”

From April 9 to 11, students participate in sectional rehearsals and coaching sessions with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Chicago Sinfonietta in addition to attending a CSO concert conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Un ballo in maschera In 1857, Verdi wanted to compose King Lear, his second opera based on Shakespeare, a full decade after the premiere of Macbeth.

Instead, in a tale as convoluted as any opera plot, he settled on adapting a lesser French play that went through four distinct settings and at least four different titles in its circuitous route to the stage. Yet Un ballo in maschera—a masked ball—as it came to be called, turned out to be one of Verdi’s greatest masterworks.

A great lover of Shakespeare, Verdi had long wanted to set King Lear to music. At first, he felt that it was “so tremendous, so intricate, that it would seem impossible to make an opera of it.” But for years, he could not put it out of his mind. He even drew up his own scenario, and then asked two different poets to write the text—first Salvadore Cammarano, the librettist of Lucia di Lammermoor, who died before he finished it, and then Antonio Somma, who made different versions for Verdi, one in 1853 and another two years later.

Re Lear was what Verdi intended to offer the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples for its 1858 season, a year after the premiere of Simon Boccanegra in Venice. But from the beginning there were problems with casting the big roles, and Verdi started to get cold feet; “I am very hesitant about Re Lear,” he confessed early in the summer of 1858. “Let me scrounge around among other plays,” he wrote to the San Carlo management, “and it will be fine when I finally find a subject.” He asked Somma to come up with something impassioned and beautiful (“passions above all!”). But when Somma suggested The Monk, Matthew Gregory Lewis’s once popular gothic romance, Verdi was not interested: “I want a story of feelings, not a spectacle.”

Verdi then made his own surprising choice: Gustave III, ou le bal masqué by Eugène Scribe, which had already been set to music by at least three composers (in addition to Vincenzo Bellini, who was considering it when he died.) assassinated at a masked ball in 1792, was an unexpected, controversial choice. It was then highly unusual for opera to tackle events that had taken place within recent times. Even in our day, operas based on contemporary history, such as John Adams’s Nixon in China, Philip Glass’s Satyagraha about the life of Gandhi, and Anthony Davis’s X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, have raised eyebrows. But they have gone onstage as their composers intended. Verdi did not have such luck.

As early as October 1857, Verdi was warned that the Neapolitan censors would insist on changes. But he was not prepared for the extent of their demands: characters should be redrawn, relationships altered, the setting and the century changed. In January 1858, the censors drew up a list: The king must become a duke and his love for the married Amelia should be noble and pure; the action should be moved to a pre-Christian land in the north—anywhere except Norway and Sweden—at a time when witchcraft was still a powerful force; there could be no firearms, and the duke was to be killed with a dagger (Gustavus had died from a gunshot).

Somma suggested twelfth-century Pomerania, with Stettin in place of Stockholm. (He also asked to be credited anonymously, claiming that in such politically sensitive times he could write with greater freedom.) Verdi thought the time frame was too distant for Gustave; they settled on the seventeenth century. There was a new title: Una vendetta in domino. (And Somma’s name became an anagram: Tommaso Anoni.) Then, in January 1858, Felice Orsini, an Italian revolutionary, attempted to assassinate Napoleon III as he was on his way to the opera to see Rossini’s William Tell. The censors were now even more difficult. They asked Verdi to change his protagonist into a lord, removing any suggestion of sovereignty; to make Amelia a sister rather than a wife; to move the murder offstage; to turn the masked ball into a banquet (without masks). The scene was now fourteenth-century Florence. And there was a new title: Adelia degli Adimari (Adelia of the Adimari). Verdi was incensed: “In matters of art I have my own ideas

and convictions which are clear and precise and which I neither can nor should give up.”

Neither Verdi nor Somma wanted anything to do with Adelia degli Adimari. When Verdi learned that he was going to be sued by management, he called on his attorney and proposed canceling the Naples contract. Verdi then turned his attention to writing his own ninety-page defense. The case was eventually settled out of court. A key piece of evidence was a Roman poster advertising a theatrical version of Gustavo III that same season: “In Rome they allow Gustavo III as a spoken play but won’t allow a libretto on the same subject,” Verdi said.

As with the opera setting itself, there was now a change of venue: Verdi had his sights set on a premiere in Rome. In the end, the Roman censors proved more amenable, but the scene of the action still needed to be changed, preferably to somewhere outside Europe. Verdi wrote to Somma: “What would you say to North America at the time of English rule?”

By August 11, 1858, in a letter to Verdi from Somma, the king of Sweden had at last become Riccardo, earl of Warwick, an English colonial governor living in seventeenth-century Boston, Massachusetts. By September, there was yet another new title. This one stuck: Un ballo in maschera—named for the climactic scene the Neapolitan censors wanted to change. All the pieces now fell into place, if in a somewhat haphazard manner, intermingling elements of the original Swedish murder tale, the French libretto of Scribe, its Italian adaptation, and the American setting. The Swedish Count Ankarström, the husband of Riccardo’s beloved Amelia, is now Renato, the Massachusetts governor’s secretary. The conspirators, originally Counts Ribbing and Horn, are Samuel and Tom. The premiere in Rome’s Teatro Apollo on February 17, 1859, was a huge success—as great as any Verdi had witnessed in years. He was called to the footlights more than twenty times.

The run of performances was sold out; tickets were hawked on the street for twice the printed price. Ovations grew in size each night.

D

espite its tortured genesis, Un ballo in maschera would quickly take its place as one of Verdi’s most masterful scores.

Of the half dozen operas between La traviata and Aida, Un ballo in maschera has enjoyed the most consistent success over the decades.

Conventional in outline yet visionary in realization, it overflows with the melodic richness of his earlier successes but is bolstered by a more sophisticated use of the orchestra and structured more tightly even than the operas that immediately followed, La forza del destino and Don Carlos.

Un ballo in maschera is at its heart a classic opera, as elegant in its formal design—in its respect for proportion, symmetry, and balance, and in its reliance on conventional building materials—as a great Palladian villa. Its blueprint is a stream of musical numbers—arias and duets, a trio, quartets and quintets. But they are all treated with remarkable flexibility and freedom.

Verdi is moving toward a kind of opera that is more fluid but also more concise—more reliant

on the dramatic power of a single phrase or the simplest change of harmony.

Un ballo in maschera is, in one sense, the gateway to the great masterworks of Verdi’s last years—only five new operas follow it in the remaining thirty-four years of his career. But at the same time, it is also the product of the great hit-maker of the mid-century Italian opera stage—the logical descendant of Rigoletto and La traviata. It is a score that pushes opera forward without giving up the strengths of the tradition.

Throughout Un ballo in maschera, Verdi juggles gravity and humor, comedy and tragedy in a natural, true-to-life manner. (In that sense, it is highly Shakespearean.) In the very opening number, Verdi clouds the peaceful chorus of Riccardo’s officers with the ominous staccato asides of the conspirators Samuel and Tom. That kind of interplay of light and dark colors the entire opera, reaching its peak in grand ensembles such as the quintet at the end of act 1, when Riccardo’s lighthearted jesting (“È scherzo od è follia”) rides unconcerned over the fearful musings of the others.

Above all, Un ballo in maschera breathes with the spirit Verdi most urgently desired from this opera: a story of feelings—“Passions above all!”

In Verdi’s entire catalog, there is not a duet as impassioned—rising to an almost unhinged outburst of emotion—as that between Amelia and Riccardo that lies at the center of act 2— precisely at the very heart of the opera. The climax is as breathtaking in its own way as the act 2 love duet in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, but where Wagner writes pages of vast paragraphs, Verdi needs but a handful of phrases. Wagner completed the second act of Tristan and Isolde in Venice in February 1859. Some three hundred miles to the south, Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera was unveiled in Rome that same month.

Verdi never did write Re Lear. Somma’s libretto is still kept in the archives at Verdi’s villa in Sant’Agata near Parma, where he lived out his days. The two Shakespearean operas

that Verdi did eventually write in the glory of his final years—Otello, completed in 1887, and Falstaff, in 1893—are so richly satisfying that the loss of his Lear is easily overlooked. But the score that took its place, with its polyglot cast of characters, unique American setting, and lavish melodic splendor, is a score quite

unlike any other work of Verdi’s—a high point of nineteenth-century Italian art that we would not want to be without.

VERDI AND MUTI Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, Riccardo Muti has been closely identified with the music of Giuseppe Verdi. In recent years, Chicago has been fortunate to have hosted many of Muti’s performances of Verdi’s music. From his first concerts as music director designate in January 2009, Verdi has been central to Muti’s Chicago Symphony repertoire—in Orchestra Hall, Carnegie Hall, and on tour to Europe and Asia.

In addition to leading various overtures, scenes, and arias, Muti has conducted the Four Sacred Pieces, five complete operas, and the Requiem Mass on several occasions. The 2009 recording of the Requiem received Grammy awards for Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance.

SYNOPSIS OF UN BALLO IN MASCHERA The action takes place in and around Boston, Massachusetts, toward the end of the seventeenth century.

ACT 1 Scene 1: A hall in the governor’s mansion Riccardo, the earl of Warwick and governor of Boston, greets the people who are seeking an audience, unaware that among them are the conspirators Samuel and Tom, who are plotting to kill him.

Riccardo’s page, Oscar, hands him the guest list for a masked ball the governor is giving. On it is Amelia, with whom he is secretly in love, even though she is the wife of Renato, his best friend. Renato enters and tries to warn Riccardo of a conspiracy against him, but the governor refuses to believe him. The chief justice asks Riccardo to banish the fortune-teller Ulrica. Instead, Riccardo invites everyone to join him in visiting her.

Scene 2: Ulrica’s dwelling The sailor Silvano asks Ulrica to predict his future.

When she says he will get money and a promotion, Riccardo (disguised as a fisherman) slips the promotion and some money into Silvano’s pocket. The crowd is dismissed so that a lady may consult Ulrica privately, but Riccardo hides and hears Amelia ask how she can overcome her love for him. Ulrica tells her that she must gather a magic herb at midnight from beneath the gallows outside the city. After Amelia leaves, everyone returns, and Riccardo asks for a reading. Ulrica says he is a great man—then refuses to say any more. Riccardo insists, and Ulrica declares that the next man who shakes his hand will take his life. Riccardo laughs it off, and when Renato arrives and shakes his hand, everyone agrees the prophecy has to be false.

ACT 2 Midnight. The gallows outside Boston Amelia is gathering the magic herbs when Riccardo appears and declares his love for her. She resists, but finally admits she loves him, too. Their tryst is suddenly interrupted by Renato, who warns Riccardo that conspirators are approaching to kill him. Amelia has hidden her face with a veil, and Riccardo orders Renato to escort the mysterious woman back to the city without trying to identify her. When the conspirators arrive, led by Samuel and Tom, they are furious to discover Renato, not the governor. They demand to

know who his companion is. Renato draws his sword to protect her, but Amelia drops her veil to avoid any bloodshed. The conspirators think it a huge joke that Renato would meet his own wife in such a place, but Renato is livid at what he thinks is a betrayal by his best friend, and he invites Samuel and Tom to come to his house.

ACT 3 Scene 1: A study in Renato’s house Renato refuses to believe that Amelia is innocent, and he tells her that she must die. Tom and Samuel enter, and Renato tells them he knows all about the plot to kill the governor and that he wishes to join them.

They decide to draw lots to determine who will do the deed. When Amelia announces that Oscar has arrived with an invitation from Riccardo, she is ordered to draw the name—it is Renato’s. Oscar invites everyone to a grand masked ball at the governor’s mansion, and while the conspirators decide on their costumes, Amelia desperately seeks a way to warn Riccardo.

Scene 2: The earl’s study Riccardo decides the only honorable thing to do is to send Renato and Amelia back to England. Oscar brings him an anonymous letter warning that an attempt will be made on his life at the ball, but Riccardo ignores it so that he can see Amelia one last time.

Scene 3: A ballroom Renato asks Oscar what costume Riccardo is wearing.

At first, the page refuses to tell him, but then reveals the costume is a black cape with a pink ribbon on the breast. When Amelia begs Riccardo to leave the ball, he tells her that he is sending her and her husband away. As they bid each other farewell, Renato steps between them and stabs the governor. The wounded Riccardo insists that Amelia is innocent and gives his friend the signed orders sending them back to England. Riccardo pardons all the conspirators, then dies.

profiles Riccardo Muti Conductor Riccardo Muti is one of the world’s preeminent conductors. In 2010, he became the tenth music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It was recently announced that he would extend his tenure through the 2022–23 season at the request of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. Muti’s leadership has been distinguished by the strength of his artistic partnership with the Orchestra; his dedication to performing great works of the past and present, including thirteen world premieres to date; the enthusiastic reception he and the CSO have received on national and international tours; and eight recordings on the CSO Resound label, with three Grammy awards among them. In addition, his contributions to the cultural life of Chicago— with performances throughout its many neighborhoods and at Orchestra Hall—have made a lasting impact on the city.

Born in Naples, Riccardo Muti studied piano under Vincenzo Vitale at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, graduating with distinction.

He subsequently received a diploma in composition and conducting from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan under the guidance of Bruno Bettinelli and Antonino Votto.

He first came to the attention of critics and the public in 1967, when he won the Guido Cantelli Conducting Competition, by unanimous vote of the jury, in Milan. In 1968, he became principal conductor of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a position he held until 1980. In 1971, Muti was invited by Herbert von Karajan to conduct at the Salzburg Festival, the first of many occasions, which led to a celebration of fifty years of artistic collaboration with the Austrian festival in 2020.

During the 1970s, Muti was chief conductor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra (1972–1982), succeeding Otto Klemperer. From 1980 to 1992, he inherited the position of music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from Eugene Ormandy.

From 1986 to 2005, he was music director of Teatro alla Scala, and during that time, he directed major projects such as the three Mozart/Da Ponte operas and Wagner’s Ring cycle in addition to his exceptional contributions to the Verdi repertoire. His tenure as music director of Teatro alla Scala, the longest in its history, culminated in the triumphant reopening of the restored opera house on December 7, 2004, with Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta.

Over the course of his extraordinary career, Riccardo Muti has conducted the most important orchestras in the world: from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and from the New York Philharmonic to the Orchestre National de France; as well as the Vienna Philharmonic, an orchestra to which he is linked by particularly close and important ties, and with which he has appeared at the Salzburg Festival since 1971. When Muti was invited to lead the Vienna Philharmonic’s 150th-anniversary concert, the orchestra presented him with the Golden Ring, a special sign of esteem and affection, awarded only to a few select conductors. In 2021, he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in the New Year’s Concert for the sixth time.

Muti has received numerous international honors over the course of his career. He is Cavaliere di Gran Croce of the Italian Republic and a recipient of the German Verdienstkreuz.

He received the decoration of Officer of the Legion of Honor from French President Nicolas Sarkozy. He was made an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. The Salzburg Mozarteum awarded him its silver medal for his contribution to Mozart’s music, and in Vienna, he was elected an honorary member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna Hofmusikkapelle, and Vienna State Opera. The State of Israel has honored him with the Wolf Prize in the arts. In July 2018, President Petro Poroshenko presented Muti with the State Award of Ukraine during the Roads of Friendship concert at the Ravenna Festival in Italy following earlier performances in Kiev. prestigious Praemium Imperiale for Music of the Japan Arts Association in Tokyo.

In September 2010, Riccardo Muti became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was named 2010 Musician of the Year by Musical America. In 2011, Muti was selected as the recipient of the coveted Birgit Nilsson Prize. In 2011, he received the Opera News Award in New York City and Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. That summer, he was named an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic and honorary director for life of the Rome Opera. In May 2012, he was awarded the highest papal honor: the Knight of the Grand Cross First Class of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Benedict XVI. In 2016, he was honored by the Japanese government with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star. On August 15, 2021, Muti received the Great Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, the highest possible civilian honor from the Austrian government.

Passionate about teaching young musicians, Muti founded the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra in 2004 and the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy in 2015. The purpose of the Italian Opera Academy—which takes place in Italy, as well as in Japan since 2019 as part of a multi-year collaboration with the Tokyo Spring Festival—is to pass on Muti’s expertise to young musicians and to foster a better understanding of the complex journey to the realization of an opera. Through Le vie dell’Amicizia (The Roads of Friendship), a project of the Ravenna Festival in Italy, he has conducted in many of the world’s most troubled areas in order to bring attention to civic and social issues. Ovations in Vienna and Latest Recordings, Honors, and Special Seminar

Since his last appearances with the CSO in May, Riccardo Muti traveled to Austria to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein in four performances (May 21–24) of a French program that included Debussy’s Nocturnes and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. The headlines of Die Presse exclaimed, “Muti’s Debussy shimmers and Berlioz captivates,” while the Kurier heralded the performances as an occasion, “when various artistic dreams become a stunning musical reality,” in reference to the program’s evocative works brimming with rich orchestral color, depth, and expression. Muti exhibited an expert understanding of this distinct musical palette, as was noted by Pablo L. Rodriguez in his article for Scherzo: “The Vienna Philharmonic attended the directions of the Italian master . . . in a room with acoustics of supernatural transparency and exquisiteness.” The review in Kronen Zeitung added, “Muti leads [the philharmonic] with the highest precision, passion, and joy of refined colors.” Audiences gave the opening night concert of the sold-out run “frenzied applause” and a “minute-long standing ovation” (Der Standard).

Recently, BR-Klassik released Muti’s 1981 performance of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Jessye Norman and José Carreras as soloists. The recording has received many rave reviews by publications, including one calling it, “A thrilling, driven performance defined by passion and belief” (Limelight magazine).

In mid-May, Muti was appointed Honorary President of the National Association of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic of Ravenna for his work as a “tireless interpreter and passionate witness to the language of music intended as a universal tool to promote intercultural dialogue.”

On June 7 at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, Maestro Muti participated in a special seminar on the subject of the Fosse Ardeatine Massacre, organized by the ViBiA Project (Virtual Biographical Archive) and the Historical Archive of the President of the Republic. For this presentation—from a larger series held in honor of the anniversary of the liberation of Rome—there was a special broadcast of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2019 performance of William Schuman’s Symphony no. 9 (Le fosse Ardeatine) preceded by personal remarks from Muti.

Francesco Meli is one of the most sought-after tenors in the world. Born in Genoa, Italy, he began his studies at the age of seventeen at the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory, continuing with Vittorio Terranova and going on to gain recognition in several contests for singers, including the Caruso, Zandonai, and Tosti competitions.

In 2002, he made his Festival of Two Worlds debut in Spoleto, Italy, marking the start of an outstanding career performing a repertoire of bel canto and the music of Rossini. In 2022, he celebrates his twenty-year career and eighteen years of collaboration with the Teatro alla Scala.

In fact, he made his La Scala debut at the age of twenty-three in The Dialogues of the Carmelites conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Since 2009, Meli has turned his attention from bel canto toward more dramatic repertoire. He resumed concert activity in 2020 with a performance of Un ballo in maschera at the Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; in concerts with piano accompaniment at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, La Scala, La Fenice, the Festival della Valle d’Itria, and the Parco Archeologico Scolacium; and with orchestra at the Arena di Verona.

Early in 2021, he completed an extended tour in Japan and as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. Joyce El-Khoury Soprano These concerts mark Joyce El-Khoury’s debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Joyce El-Khoury’s performance as Violetta in La traviata in her recent Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) debut received wide critical praise. The current season already brought her debut in the title role of Madama Butterfly at Welsh National Opera, a return to Opéra National de Bordeaux for gala concerts, to Toulouse as Anna in Le villi, and to the Al Bustan International Festival in recital with Gianluca Marciano as pianist. In addition, she sang Leila in The Pearl Fishers at Dallas Opera.

She later makes her Lucerne Festival and Grafenegg Festival debuts in Strauss’s Four Last Songs, returns to the Canadian Opera Company for Micaëla in Carmen, and debuts in the title role of Anna Bolena at Bilbao Opera.

In recent seasons, she made debuts in Italy with Verdi’s Requiem at Teatro Massimo in Palermo under Riccardo Muti and in the title role in Tosca at Opéra de Lille. In addition, she gave performances as Tatiana in Eugene Onegin and Liù in Turandot at Canadian Opera Company, as Mimì in La bohème with Australian Opera, and Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux with Welsh National Opera and in a gala performance in Karlsruhe. Other appearances included recitals in Paris, Montreal, and Toronto; Verdi’s Requiem in Toulouse and Mexico City; and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Prague.

After an acclaimed Glyndebourne Festival debut in 2017 as Violetta, she appeared with

She was later featured in another world premiere, Liszt’s Sardanapalo, with the Staatskapelle Weimar.

Joyce El-Khoury’s discography includes two rare operas by Donizetti, Les martyrs and Belisario, conducted by Sir Mark Elder on the Opera Rara label, both to critical acclaim. Her solo disc, Écho, was also recorded with Opera Rara and the Hallé under Carlo Rizzi.

Recent engagements include Violetta in La traviata with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto; Musetta in La bohème with Bavarian State Opera in Munich; and as Tatyana Bakst in Jake Heggie’s new opera, Great Scott, with San Diego Opera. El-Khoury garnered praise when she starred in the title role of Maria Stuarda at Seattle Opera, replacing an ailing colleague in addition to giving her own scheduled performances. On the concert stage, she debuted with the Orchestre de Paris in Rossini’s Stabat mater under the baton of Jesús López-Cobos and performed in concerts in Austria with Elīna Garanča and in Spain with Juan Diego Flórez.

Born in Lebanon, and brought up in Canada, Joyce El-Khoury earned a bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Ottawa. She received an artist diploma from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, and she is a graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. She holds first prizes in many contests, including the Loren L. Zachary, Opera Index, George London, and Mario Lanza vocal competitions.

Damiana Mizzi Soprano These concerts mark Damiana Mizzi’s debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Italian soprano Damiana Mizzi began her musical training studying piano at the age of eight. She went on to attend the Nino Rota Conservatory of Music in Monopoli (Bari), earning her diploma under Maria Grazia Pani, and completed her studies with Amelia Felle and Mariella Devia. In 2008, she obtained a master’s degree in vocal performance at the Nino Rota Conservatory.

She has participated in master classes led by Natale De Carolis, Manuela Custer, Stefano Giannini, Domenico Colaianni, Alfonso Antoniozzi, Daniela Barcellona, Tiziana Fabbricini, and more recently with Renata Scotto at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 2013, she attended the Accademia Rossiniana in Pesaro with Alberto Zedda.

A finalist at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia 2017, Mizzi has won many international contests, including, among others, first prizes in the Francisco Viñas International Competition in 2014 (including a prize offered by the European Opera Centre), the International Ottavio Ziino Competition, and the Valerio Gentile International Vocal Competition.

She made her professional debut in 2004 as Rosina in Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, and she was Valencienne in Lehàr’s The Merry Widow in 2005.

Alfred Walker Bass-baritone These concerts mark Alfred Walker’s debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

This season, Alfred Walker returned to San Francisco Opera as Scarpia in Tosca and to the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Crown in Porgy and Bess; joined Washington National Opera as Mitchell in It All Falls Down, from Written in Stone, a tetralogy of one-act operas by Carlos Simon and Marc Bamuthi Joseph; and Washington Concert Opera as Nalikantha in Lakmé. With the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra on tour he sang Donner in Das Rheingold under the baton of Yannick NézetSéguin. Next season, he returns to San Francisco Opera as Enobarbus in the world premiere of John Adams’s Antony and Cleopatra, joins the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Vater in Hansel and Gretel, returns to the Met as Masetto in Don Giovanni, and sings Rachmaninov’s The Bells with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel. These concerts mark Martin Luther Clark’s debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Lunga Eric Hallam, a thirdyear tenor at The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago, was born in Khayelitsha, South Africa, where he founded a nonprofit organization called Phenomenal Opera Voices.

At the University of Cape Town College of Music, he received his diploma and postgraduate (with honors) degrees in music training. Recent engagements as a Cape Town Opera Young Artist include Tebaldo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, and Roberto in Maria Stuarda, as well as Ramiro in La Cenerentola at Cape Town Conservatory. He was featured as part of the 2017 Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe. Hallam also competed as a semifinalist in the 2019 Neue Stimmen and Voice of South Africa international singing competitions. Chicago appearances include the Harris Theater’s Beyond the Aria series alongside Joyce DiDonato.

In Lyric Opera’s 2020–21 season virtual programming, Hallam was featured in Lawrence Brownlee and Friends: The Next Chapter, Creating The Factotum, Sole e Amore, Magical Music Around the World, and Rising Stars in Concert.

In addition, on the East Coast, he sang Vaudémont in Iolanta and King Charles in The Maid of Orleans with Russian Opera Workshop (2019 summer season). The previous year, he was heard as a Central City Opera Apprentice Artist and as tenor soloist at the Library of Congress, where he sang both published and unpublished works of Leonard Bernstein for the centennial celebration of the composer’s birth. Other appearances have included Lyric Opera of Kansas City, University of North Texas Opera, Dallas Opera, Charlottesville Opera, Opera North, and Wolf Trap Opera.

A native of Marshall, Texas, Clark has received an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (2018), first place in the Bill and Margot Winspear Opera Scholarship Competition (2014), and first place in the NATS Vocal Competition, Division VI (2013).

Chicago Symphony Chorus

The Chicago Symphony Chorus regularly performs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Orchestra Hall and at the Ravinia Festival.

The history of the Chorus began in 1957, when sixth music director Fritz Reiner invited Margaret Hillis to establish a chorus to equal the quality of the Orchestra. Hillis accepted the challenge, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus debuted in March and April 1958, in Mozart’s Requiem under Bruno Walter and Verdi’s Requiem under Reiner. Hillis served the Chorus for thirty-seven years, until her retirement in 1994; ninth music director Daniel Barenboim appointed Duain Wolfe as her successor in June of that year.

The Chorus first performed in Carnegie Hall in 1967 in Henze’s Muses of Sicily and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe under seventh music director Jean Martinon, and most recently in 2015 with Riccardo Muti for Scriabin’s Prometheus and Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky. Touring internationally with the Orchestra, the Chorus traveled to London and Salzburg in 1989 with Sir Georg Solti for performances of Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust and to Berlin in 1999 with Barenboim for Brahms’s A German Requiem and Pierre Boulez for Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron.

World premieres featuring the Chorus have included Ned Rorem’s Goodbye My Fancy, John Harbison’s Four Psalms, and Bernard Rands’s apókryphos. With visiting orchestras, the Chorus has collaborated with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Seiji Ozawa, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with Zubin Mehta, and the Staatskapelle Berlin under Barenboim.

Since first recording commercially in 1959— Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky under Reiner— the Chorus has amassed a discography that includes hallmarks of the choral repertoire and several complete operas. Donald Palumbo Chorus Director Chorus master of the Metropolitan Opera, Donald Palumbo is responsible for the ensemble’s preparation and performance in more than twenty-five productions each season.

This appointment followed a sixteen-year tenure as chorus master at Lyric Opera of Chicago.

A native of Rochester, New York, Palumbo received his bachelor of arts degree from Boston University. At the Dallas Opera in the 1980s, he served as the assistant to Roberto Benaglio, the renowned chorus master of La Scala and worked closely with conductor Nicola Rescigno.

Palumbo was music director of the Chorus Pro Musica of Boston, and he also has served as chorus master for the Canadian Opera Company, the Dallas Opera, the Banff School for the Arts Summer Opera Program, the Opera Company of Boston, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. In Europe, he has held the position of

chorus master at the Opéra de Lyon, the Aixen-Provence Festival, and the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. He has worked extensively at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and has conducted the Radio France Chorus in several a cappella choral concerts.

From 1999 to 2001, Palumbo was chorus director of the Salzburg Festival, the first American to hold that post. During his threeyear tenure in Salzburg, he prepared the chorus of the Vienna Concert Association in Doktor Faust, Don Carlo, Les Troyens, Iphigénie en Tauride, Tristan and Isolde, Jenůfa, Falstaff, and The Magic Flute, among others. In addition, he prepared the chorus for Schumann’s Requiem with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted

chicago symphony orchestra The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is consistently hailed as one of the world’s leading orchestras, and in September 2010, renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti became its tenth music director.

During his tenure, the Orchestra has deepened its engagement with the Chicago community, nurtured its legacy while supporting a new generation of musicians and composers, and collaborated with visionary artists.

The history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began in 1889, when Theodore Thomas, then the leading conductor in America and a recognized music pioneer, was invited by Chicago businessman Charles Norman Fay to establish a symphony orchestra here.

Thomas’s aim to build a permanent orchestra with performance capabilities of the highest quality was realized at the first concerts in October 1891 in the Auditorium Theatre. Thomas served as music director until his death in January 1905—just three weeks after the dedication of Orchestra Hall, the Orchestra’s permanent home designed by Daniel Burnham.

Frederick Stock, recruited by Thomas to the viola section in 1895, became assistant conductor in 1899 and succeeded the Orchestra’s founder. His tenure lasted thirty-seven years, from 1905 to 1942—the longest of the Orchestra’s music directors. Dynamic and innovative, the Stock years saw the founding of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the first training orchestra in the United States affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, in 1919. Stock also established youth auditions, organized the first subscription concerts especially for children, and began a series of popular concerts.

Three eminent conductors headed the Orchestra during the following decade: Désiré Defauw was music director from 1943 to 1947; Artur Rodzinski assumed the post in 1947–48; and Rafael Kubelík led the ensemble for three seasons from 1950 to 1953.

The next ten years belonged to Fritz Reiner, whose recordings with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are still considered performance hallmarks. It was Reiner who invited Margaret Hillis to form the Chicago Symphony Chorus in 1957. For the five seasons from 1963 to 1968, Jean Martinon held the position of music director.

Sir Georg Solti, the Orchestra’s eighth music director, served from 1969 until 1991. His arrival launched one of the most successful musical partnerships of our time, and the CSO made its first overseas tour to Europe in 1971 under his direction, along with numerous award-winning recordings. Solti then held

the title of music director laureate and returned to conduct the Orchestra for several weeks each season until his death in September 1997.

Daniel Barenboim was named music director designate in January 1989, and he became the Orchestra’s ninth music director in September 1991, a position he held until June 2006. His tenure was distinguished by the opening of Symphony Center in 1997, highly praised operatic productions at Orchestra Hall, numerous appearances with the Orchestra in the dual role of pianist and conductor, twenty-one international tours, and the appointment of Duain Wolfe as the Chorus’s second director.

Pierre Boulez’s long-standing relationship with the Orchestra led to his appointment as principal guest conductor in 1995. He was named Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus in 2006, a position he held until his death in January 2016. Only two others have served as principal guest conductors: Carlo Maria Giulini, who appeared in Chicago regularly in the late 1950s, was named to the post in 1969, serving until 1972; Claudio Abbado held the position from 1982 to 1985. From 2006 to 2010, Bernard Haitink was the Orchestra’s first principal conductor. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma served as the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant from 2010 to 2019. Hilary Hahn currently is the CSO’s Artist-in-Residence, a role that brings her to Chicago for multiple residencies each season.

Jessie Montgomery is the current Mead Composerin-Residence. She follows ten highly regarded composers in this role, including John Corigliano and Shulamit Ran—both winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Music—and Missy Mazzoli, who completed her threeyear tenure in June 2021. In addition to composing works for the CSO, Montgomery curates the contemporary MusicNOW series.

The Orchestra first performed at Ravinia Park in 1905 and appeared frequently through August 1931, after which the park was closed for most of the Great Depression. In August 1936, the Orchestra helped to inaugurate the first season of the Ravinia Festival, and it has been in residence nearly every summer since.

Since 1916, recording has been a significant part of the Orchestra’s activities. Current releases on CSO Resound, the Orchestra’s independent recording label, include the Grammy Award–winning release of Verdi’s Requiem led by Riccardo Muti. Recordings by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have earned sixty-three Grammy awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
