a note from the chair and the president Welcome to Symphony Center. We are delighted that you have joined us this spring for an array of exceptional performances.

At the end of March, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returns to Chicago to conduct the world premiere of Orpheus Undone by the CSO’s former Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli; Bruckner’s Second Symphony; and Mahler’s beautiful RückertLieder, as sung by mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča in her CSO debut and for the annual Symphony Ball concert.

The following week, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins Muti and the CSO in Britten’s Piano Concerto.

When he returns in late April, Muti leads the world premiere of current Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, in addition to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony and Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto no. 2, featuring CSO Principal Bass Alexander Hanna as soloist.

For Muti’s final residency of the season, in June, he and the Orchestra perform Brahms’s First Symphony and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. These concerts are followed by the highly anticipated performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, featuring an incredible cast of singers and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and is not be missed. The CSO and Muti conclude the season with a special free-admission Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park on June 27.

In addition to concerts with Maestro Muti, the Orchestra welcomes returning guest conductors Jaap van Zweden, Julian Rachlin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and James Gaffigan, and Klaus Mäkelä and Karina Canellakis in their debuts.

The Symphony Center Presents Piano series features Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, Evgeny Kissin, and Denis Kozhukhin in his debut. The SCP Jazz series continues with performances by Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade in A MoodSwing Reunion and double-bill performances by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and pianist Bill Charlap with the Artemis jazz ensemble and Sean Jones’s Dizzy Spellz with the Thaddeus Tukes Quintet. Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant rounds out the season.

R

iccardo Muti’s final season as music director pays tribute to his remarkable bond with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and celebrates the communicative power of his music making that has galvanized Chicago audiences over these past thirteen years.

Muti’s concerts combine classics with discoveries, and reunite him with longtime colleagues and friends. Each program highlights a different aspect of the acclaimed Muti-CSO partnership, now at its peak after playing some 500 concerts together—reviving signature pieces, showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, and inviting beloved guest artists back to our stage.

Throughout the season, Muti will conduct key works from his Chicago years—Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, which capped his first concert with the Orchestra fifty years ago

next summer; and Respighi’s Pines of Rome, the dazzling finale of his first concert as music director, in Millennium Park in 2010. Muti will return to music by Schubert and Tchaikovsky, whose complete symphonies he surveyed so memorably with the Orchestra. And he is reuniting with pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Julia Fischer, and pianist Maurizio Pollini, who makes his first appearance with the Orchestra in a decade. Continuing his annual tradition of showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, Muti joins Concertmaster Robert Chen in Mozart, longtime Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny in the concerto Lalo Schifrin wrote with him in mind, and David Herbert, one of Muti’s earliest principal appointments, in William Kraft’s First Timpani Concerto.

For the first time in Chicago, Muti will lead Rachmaninov’s haunting Second Symphony and Prokofiev’s dazzling Fifth. He will give

In February, Phillip Huscher met with Riccardo Muti to discuss upcoming performances as well as reflections on his time as music director and his enduring relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is an excerpt from their conversation.

Phillip Huscher: In September, I was so struck that after a year and a half, it took one rehearsal with the Orchestra to get back to where you left off, like best friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.

Riccardo Muti: Sì, my years with this orchestra have been twelve years of beautiful musical life. Never friction. Everything was always very natural, very friendly, and the atmosphere has been unique. I love this orchestra.

PH: You have appointed twenty-five players.

RM: Twenty-five? I didn’t remember the number, but one thing I know, twenty-five fantastic players. Every time a music director, together with the committee, chooses a new player, it is a huge responsibility. It means that you are choosing a player for the next thirty, forty years. I think that in this case, I have chosen—together with my colleagues—twenty-five wonderful musicians. (continued)

PH: Emerging from COVID, what are your thoughts now on performances in the concert hall versus streaming and recording?

RM: Of course, the future is bringing new media—new possibilities. There is some advantage to that. For example, you can do a concert in Chicago, or in Berlin, or Vienna, and it can be seen immediately in every part of the world. That means you don’t have only 2,000 or 3,000 people that listen to the concert, but, theoretically, endless people. This is something that culturally can be an advantage. But music should be experienced live, directly. Because the presence of the public is very important to give a certain energy, positive or negative, to the performers. . . . We play for them. Without the public, we have no reason to exist.

PH: The bond you have with the CSO is very strong. What are your hopes for the Orchestra?

RM: My dream for the future is that this orchestra can speak to the world from Chicago, and not only to the Chicago audience. . . . The world wants to have the Chicago Symphony, so this is a responsibility that important people— culturally speaking and economically speaking—must keep in mind. It is a responsibility to have this great orchestra here and to make it possible for this orchestra to speak to the world every day. It is a dream. It is a need for the new generations.

the U.S. premiere of the recently discovered Solemn Prelude by the British composer of African descent Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and unveil a new work by Jessie Montgomery, the sixth Mead Composer-in-Residence to be appointed by Muti. At the season’s end, he will lead his first Chicago performances of Beethoven’s sublime Missa solemnis, a towering work of sacred vocal music that is a testament to the very soul and spirit of music.

Program after program is designed to demonstrate our tenth music director’s unique passion for communicating the solace and joy that music alone can deliver. In Muti’s hands, these are pieces that draw us in with their quiet depth, or thrill us with unexpected drama and

Highlights of the 2022–23 Season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center Presents On March 29, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association announced its programming for the 2022–23 season. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 132nd season celebrates the musical legacy of Riccardo Muti and his thirteen seasons as the CSO’s tenth music director. This important chapter in the CSO’s history has been defined by a profound artistic connection between the Maestro and Orchestra that has resulted in exceptional music making admired by listeners in Chicago and around the world.

PREMIERES AND NEW WORKS Throughout the 2022–23 season, the CSO performs a wide variety of repertoire, including several works receiving their U.S. premiere or first CSO performances. Riccardo Muti will conduct the world premiere of a CSO Commission by Mead Composerin-Residence Jessie Montgomery and the U.S. premiere of ColeridgeTaylor’s Solemn Prelude.

Other U.S. premieres include the CSO co-commissioned works Diary of a Madman, a cello concerto by Lera Auerbach, written for and performed by Gautier Capuçon and conducted

SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS Symphony Center Presents (SCP) includes concerts highlighting the artistry of internationally recognized musicians in a variety of genres.

The SCP Orchestra series returns in the 2022–23 season, offering Chicago audiences the opportunity to hear performances by other great orchestras from around the world. The season includes performances by the Berliner Philharmoniker, which has not appeared in Chicago in a dozen years, with its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, with its new music director Gustavo Gimeno and violin soloist Maria Dueñas, as part of its centennial season tour.

This year’s SCP Chamber Music series celebrates exceptional string players and ensembles.

Violinist Midori collaborates with pianist JeanYves Thibaudet performing three of Beethoven’s violin sonatas including the Kreutzer. AnneSophie Mutter returns with the Mutter Virtuosi, an ensemble of talented Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarship recipients. Violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Daniil Trifonov perform a recital in March, and later that month, CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn performs solo works for violin by J.S. Bach. The distinguished violinist and violist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth join the Jerusalem Quartet to perform string sextets by Dvořák and Brahms.

The SCP Chamber Music series finale in June features the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet before it retires from the concert stage after nearly fifty years. Pianist Emanuel Ax joins the quartet for a special guest appearance.

The SCP Piano series includes the return of David Fray, Leif Ove Andsnes, Marc-André Hamelin, Emanuel Ax, and Evgeny Kissin. Two remarkable young talents make their series debuts in spring recitals, including Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. The series finale provides a rare opportunity to hear acclaimed Chopin specialist Maria João Pires.

In addition to the aforementioned SCP series, special concerts include Itzhak Perlman’s In the Fiddler’s House, an exploration of traditional

Klezmer music featuring Perlman performing with instrumentalist Hankus Stenky and Andy Statman, along with ensembles Brave Old World and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Next, tenor Juan Diego Flórez presents a recital with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. Finally, SCP and Lyric Opera of Chicago collaborate to bring together soprano Renée Fleming and pianist Evgeny Kissin in a unique recital program that features songs by Rachmaninov in honor of the composer’s 150th birthday anniversary.

World music offerings include Kodo, the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble, and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion.

Chanticleer and the CSO Brass will also perform their annual December concerts.

The acclaimed SCP Jazz series opens with Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés performing an SCP Jazz co-commission, his four-movement suite La Creación (The Creation) for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion, and vocals. Other artists include the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with vocalist Catherine Russell, tenor saxophonist Camille Thurman, and Hammond B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco; the Maria Schneider Orchestra; pianist, composer, and social activist Danilo Pérez; NEA Jazz Master and bassist Dave Holland with pianist Kenny Barron, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, and drummer Obed Calvaire; and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will have a two-day residency. In addition, the Monterey Jazz Festival tours to Chicago with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling; saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin; and pianist Christian Sands, who directs and performs with his trio members, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.

F

or young musicians, the experience of gathering with like-minded peers and being mentored by professionals from the classical-music field offers a priceless opportunity for learning and growth. Since it began in 2009, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Chicago Youth in Music Festival has taken this twofold approach, bringing together students from school orchestras and bands, community youth ensembles, and music schools to participate in coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and prominent conductors such as the CSO’s Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti.

After being canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic, the festival returns in April 2022 with an ambitious nationwide partnership spanning ten cities and with a focus on supporting extraordinary young musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music.

A new component this year is a summit that invites music teachers, administrators, and families of music students to participate in strategic conversation and collaboration. In partnership with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and the National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network, the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute presents the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit.

The Negaunee Music Institute is a cofounder and member of the advisory council for the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, launched in the 2019–20 season, with the mission of preparing young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools and thus, ultimately helping to diversify American orchestras. The National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network is, “a national coalition that works to align, promote, and develop equitable opportunities and

inclusive environments to advance BIPOC [Black, indigenous, and people of color] instrumentalists to thrive in classical music.”

Representatives of similar programs from cities across the United States have eagerly agreed to participate. The fifty-two students selected for the 2022 Festival Orchestra were identified through a competitive audition process and represent programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Washington, D.C. According to Director of Education and the Negaunee Music Institute Jonathan McCormick, it’s important for students, “to engage with peers who have similar dreams, aspirations, and challenges. The Youth in Music Festival will be a rigorous musical experience and a social event as well, so the orchestra can really bond.”

From April 9 to 11, students participate in sectional rehearsals and coaching sessions with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Chicago Sinfonietta in addition to attending a CSO concert conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Overture to Egmont, Op. 84 Beethoven met Bettina Brentano in May 1810, when he was hard at work on his incidental music for Goethe’s Egmont. He sang and played two of his recent Goethe settings for her, because he knew that she was a good friend of the great poet. Bettina wrote to Goethe about the composer with such enthusiasm that he answered her at once, suggesting that Beethoven meet him that summer in Karlsbad. In letter after letter that month, Bettina boasted to Goethe about Beethoven’s remarkable talent, and in particular, of the way he had uncovered a “new sensuous basis in the intellectual life.” On May 28, she even quoted Beethoven: “Music, verily, is the mediator between the life of the mind and the senses.”

We don’t know which of Beethoven’s works Bettina knew (aside from the Goethe songs he performed for her), but several of his recent scores revealed a thrilling union of masterly technique and powerful expression—the Fifth and Sixth symphonies, the Appassionata Piano Sonata, the Violin Concerto, the Fourth Piano Concerto, and—perhaps above all, because of its theatrical nature—the opera Leonore (later known as Fidelio).

The incidental music for Goethe’s Egmont that Beethoven introduced in Vienna that June was his first score for the stage since Leonore, and it shows the composer striving for an evergreater sense of dramatic intensity.

In the first stern notes of the overture (as well as in the impassioned fast music that follows), Beethoven conveys a seriousness and urgency unexpected in music. The story of Egmont is serious business, to be sure, for it’s not just a tale of freedom and national liberation, but also of a hero who dies for his cause, a theme that prompted Beethoven to write some of his most powerful music throughout his career. Even in Beethoven’s time, the event that inspired Goethe’s drama was ancient history: Count Egmont, who led the Flemish resistance against Spanish rule of the Netherlands, was beheaded in the Brussels marketplace on June 5, 1568. recalling his own Flemish ancestry and closely paralleling the current political situation in Vienna, which had been occupied by the French since May 1809. (During the bombardment, Beethoven hid in his brother’s cellar and covered his head with pillows to mute the noise.)

T

he Egmont overture itself is a compact tone poem, and, like the Leonore overtures Beethoven wrote for his opera Fidelio, it previews not only the central conflicts of the drama but its resolution as well. Here Beethoven depicts the oppression of Spanish rule (the slow opening is particularly grave), Count Egmont’s determination and rebellious spirit, the uprising

of the Netherlanders, and Egmont’s fate. In an unexpected pause near the end—followed by the emphatic rhythm of the opening—Beethoven even depicts Egmont’s beheading, noting in his sketches that death “could be expressed by a silence.” Egmont’s posthumous triumph, however, is clear from the overture’s victorious close.

Beethoven sent Goethe a copy of his Egmont music in the spring of 1811, but the two men didn’t meet until the summer of 1812, when they spent time together at the spa town of Teplitz.

Goethe was never convinced of Beethoven’s genius (he preferred Mozart’s music), but as a companion, he dismissed him without hesitation as an “utterly untamed personality.”

Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, Op. 60 Generations of music lovers have described—and sometimes dismissed— Beethoven’s even-numbered symphonies as lyrical and relaxed compared to their spunky, coltish, odd-numbered neighbors. The Fourth, in B-flat major, has suffered from that fate perhaps more than any.

Not long after Beethoven’s death, Robert Schumann called it “a slender Grecian maiden between two Nordic giants,” and, at the end of the nineteenth century, George Grove—the Grove of the celebrated Dictionary of Music and Musicians—commented that this symphony “is a complete contrast to both its predecessor and successor, and is as gay and spontaneous as they are serious and lofty.” Grove thought that this accounted for the fact that it had not yet “had justice done it by the public.” And, as Grove

might have predicted, in our own time the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has played the Third and Fifth symphonies with much greater regularity. Schumann was perhaps the first musician to warn us not to overlook the Fourth’s own special qualities: Do not illustrate his genius with the Ninth Symphony alone, no matter how great its audacity and scope, never uttered in any tongue. You can do as much with his First Symphony, or with the Greek-like slender one in B-flat major!

Beethoven began his B-flat major symphony in the summer of 1806, when he retired to the country estate of Prince Carl von Lichnowsky— one of the most devoted of the composer’s early admirers. This score, as well as the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Violin Concerto, all completed late in 1806, interrupted work on his

Fifth Symphony. These three works, often characterized as unexpectedly spacious and relaxed, do suggest that Beethoven was catching his breath before returning to the heroic, titanic struggles of the Fifth Symphony. But they do not mark a shift in his direction (in fact, ideas for the Violin Concerto and the Fifth Symphony exist side by side in his sketchbooks).

W

e only need to listen to the opening pages of the Fourth Symphony to understand that it was written in the midst of Beethoven’s work on the Fifth, and that it is, in fact, more its companion than its antithesis. Beethoven begins with a slow introduction of deep darkness and suspense, not in B-flat major, as the key signature promises, but B-flat minor. (And, like the opening of the Fifth Symphony, it starts with a series of descending thirds.) Beethoven is unusually stingy with notes and hesitant to get moving—the spareness of this passage provoked Weber’s scorn—and the symphony seems at first to be stuck in slow motion, which makes the sudden arrival of lively music in the “proper” key all the more startling.

The Allegro vivace is full of activity and unexpected dynamic contrasts—it is playful and witty, but also dramatic.

As Beethoven approaches the recapitulation, he suddenly drops down to a pianissimo and coaxes the music back to life over the ominous roll of the timpani. This movement may be less serious and lofty, to use Grove’s words, than the corresponding one in the Fifth, and it is certainly lighter in tone, but it is far from lightweight. In terms of economy and tightly coiled energy, it is every bit the equal of its more familiar counterpart.

The second movement is a graceful and expansive song— the “cantabile” (singing) marking is especially apt—made particularly memorable by a restless, insistent accompaniment that refuses to remain quietly in the background. Schumann, one of the symphony’s first great admirers, found the effect unexpectedly humorous—“a veritable Falstaff, in particular when occurring in the bass or the timpani.”

For the first time in his career, Beethoven enlarges the floor plan of the third movement in order to bring back the trio a second time. (Ever economical, he then cuts short the ensuing third statement of the scherzo with an unmistakable rejoinder from the horns.) The finale is a brilliant exercise in movement and contrast worthy of Haydn in earthy humor and high spirits.

It is neither spectacular nor heroic, and does not call attention to itself like some of Beethoven’s more famous finales, but brings this symphony to a perfect conclusion.

Mother and Child William Grant Still and Florence Smith, who would later make her name as Florence Price, grew up only a few city blocks apart in the heart of Little Rock, Arkansas. Theirs was a neighborhood of Black professionals. Ninth Street, which ran between the Still’s house on West Fourteenth, and the Smith house, near the corner of Broadway and Seventh, was the center of Black life in Little Rock. The Still and Smith families were close. They moved in the same circles and were interested in the same intellectual matters. The Smiths and the Stills both attended the Allison Presbyterian Church, a favorite of Little Rock’s prominent Black citizens.

Florence and William, eight years younger, were both students at Mifflin W. Gibbs High School, where William’s mother, Carrie Still, taught English and wrote and directed plays. Florence and William became lifelong friends. And in the early 1930s, after they had left Little Rock to study music and begin their careers as composers, they each wrote symphonies that are now considered the bedrock of Black orchestral music: William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony in 1930, Florence Price’s First Symphony, in E minor, in 1932. Still’s, which was premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in 1931, would take its place in the history books as the first symphony by a Black American composer to be performed by a major orchestra. And Price’s, first performed by Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on a historic night in the Auditorium Theatre just two years later, was heralded as the first music composed by a Black woman played by one of the big American orchestras. (Chicago got its first taste of Still’s music the following evening, when Katherine Dunham and Ruth Page’s company introduced his ballet La guiablesse.)

The fact that Still became known as the “Dean of AfricanAmerican Composers,” while Price looked for many years as if she would become one of the accomplished women whose names fade from history, is part of a larger and complex story.

For many years, the disparity in their success did not seem to disturb their friendship, although when they eventually came to blows, ostensibly over an unanswered letter, that friction may

well have been the root cause. They were careful to patch things up, as their history and their relationship clearly mattered to both of them. Years later, after Price’s death, Still kept in touch with Price’s daughter and continued to champion her music.

Still moved to Los Angeles in 1934, the year the Chicago Symphony first played his music—the Afro-American Symphony—in order to work in the film industry. But in 1943, he walked away from the most lucrative assignment of his career, working on the soundtrack for Stormy Weather, starring Lena Horne and Cab Calloway, because he could not stand the way Black people were being portrayed in the musical. That same year, he received a commission for a violin and piano piece from Louis Kaufman, who had played on many of Hollywood’s most beloved soundtracks, including Gone with the Wind and Rebecca, and would

make the first recording of Vivaldi’s nearly forgotten The Four Seasons four years later.

he suite that Still composed has three movements, each of them inspired by the work by one of the Harlem Renaissance artists. The second movement is indebted to a series of pieces on the theme of the mother and child by Sargent Claude Johnson, who had moved to the Bay Area and became the first Black artist on the West Coast to gain a national reputation. Still eventually took its soaring violin melody and rich, shifting piano chords and arranged the music for string orchestra. Although Still did not say so, this simple yet emotionally complex music is also a kind of family portrait, reflecting the story of the young Carrie Farnbro Still, recently a mother and a widow, who left her Mississippi home with her infant son late in 1895 to make a life for them in Little Rock.

Every piece was written by the same woman— Florence Price. “Who is Florence Price?” they wondered.* This question, posed in these opening lines of a new children’s book, is one the entire music world has been asking in recent years. The old, dilapidated house sits in St. Anne, a tiny community little more than an hour south of Chicago, in Kankakee County. This had been Florence Price’s summerhouse, long ago abandoned. The couple, the Gatwoods, were planning to renovate. Their discovery jump-started the

renaissance of one of this country’s important musical figures, a Black woman composer with strong ties to Chicago and to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, whose music had long been overlooked, neglected, and dismissed.

Florence Price had moved to Chicago with her family in 1927, making the Great Migration followed by thousands of Black Americans fleeing the terrors of living in the South and hoping to find a land of opportunity in Chicago.

When she grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, her father, Dr. James H. Smith, a prosperous dentist, was one of Little Rock’s most highly respected Black men. (The governor was rumored to be his secret patient.) But Florence already saw herself as part of a larger musical world. In 1903, she began studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, completing the four-year program in three years and graduating with diplomas in both piano and organ, the only student to receive two degrees that year.

After graduation, Florence set aside her musical ambitions; she returned to Little Rock to teach and lived at home with her parents. After her father died in 1910, Florence’s mother, who was of mixed race, sold all the family possessions, chose to pass for white, moved back to her hometown of Indianapolis, and vanished into the society of the majority. Florence moved from one teaching job to another, continued to give organ and piano recitals, married Thomas Jewell Price (the attorney who had helped settle Dr. Smith’s estate), started a family, and settled

into a comfortable middle-class life in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Little Rock. Aside from the song she wrote after the birth of her first child, “To My Little Son,” she rarely found the time to compose anything.

But she did not give up. She spent the summers of 1926 and 1927 in Chicago, where she studied composition at Chicago Musical College, and no doubt realized that this was the place to build her career and live a better life, remote from the rising racial tension in Little Rock and the attacks and crimes and lynchings that had

begun to spread throughout the city, sweeping into her family’s own neighborhood. Her arrival in Chicago placed her on the cusp of the Black Chicago Renaissance.

But even in Chicago, composing music did not come easily. After the Depression, her husband was often without work; he grew angry and abusive. He moved out of the family house in March 1930. The next January, Price was granted a divorce and custody of their two daughters. By then she had begun to write music on a larger scale, reflecting a new certainty that composing was her calling.

In January 1931, Price began the score that would change her life—a symphony in E minor, her first big orchestral piece. She worked on the score for much of the year (a broken foot gave her a bonus of uninterrupted time to compose).

Sometimes, to make ends meet, she accompanied silent films on the organ in movie houses along “The Stroll,” a stretch of South State Street between Twenty-sixth and Thirty-ninth Streets, the heart of Chicago’s Black community.

As she struggled to put her life back together and become the composer she wanted to be, in a world that viewed her through a prism of fierce prejudices, she cannot have dreamed that the most unlikely thing would happen: that Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony would give the world premiere of her symphony at the 1933 World’s Fair—the Century of Progress International Exposition.

In February 1932, Price entered four of her new works in the Rodman Wanamaker Competition, named for the department store owner and established five years earlier to support African American composers. Price’s symphony took the $500 first prize in the orchestral category (her tone poem, Ethiopia’s Shadow in America, received honorable mention).

That same year, Stock was named music advisor for the exposition, set in Chicago to honor the city’s centennial, and he began to look around for new scores that would represent the state of music in America. “Chicago talent first and American talent second,” he said. “European representation will be drastically limited.” Although Stock did not know Price, he picked her unpublished first symphony as the centerpiece of a concert to be given on June 15, 1933, in the Auditorium Theatre. (We have since learned that Maude Roberts George, president of the Chicago Music Association, and a critic for the Chicago Defender, raised the funds to underwrite the cost of the concert.) Despite the excitement and the applause that night, no one at the time entirely recognized the history-book significance of the occasion: this was the first performance of a large-scale composition by a Black woman composer given by one of the major U.S. orchestras.

“It is a faultless work, a work that speaks its own message with restraint and yet with passion,” the critic for the Chicago Daily News wrote, “. . . worthy of a place in the regular symphonic repertory.” More telling was the reception in the Black press. “No one could have sat through that program . . . and not felt, with a sense of deep satisfaction, that the Race is making progress in music,” wrote Robert Abbot, editor of the Chicago Defender, arguably the most important and most widely read Black publication in America at the time. “First there was a feeling of awe as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, an aggregation of master musicians of the white race, and directed by Dr. Frederick Stock, MARCH–JULY 2022

internationally known conductor, swung into the beautiful, harmonious strains of a composition by a Race woman.” In the same paper, Nahum Daniel Brasher wrote, “It is the beginning of a new era for us in the world of music.”

Dressed in a long, white gown, Price was called to the stage again and again after the performance to share the enthusiastic response with Stock and the Orchestra members. It was a startlingly unfamiliar sight: a lone Black woman in an all-white, all-male community, the image perfectly symbolizing the singularity of Black success in the blinding whiteness of the mainstream classical music world.

ix months after the premiere, Price ran into Stock on Michigan Avenue. They stopped to talk. He agreed to let her sit in on some Chicago Symphony rehearsals—two days later she heard Artur Schnabel and Stock prepare Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto— and he encouraged her to continue work on her new piano concerto. But he did not program it—or any of Price’s other works. Her subsequent appeals to Serge Koussevitzky, music director of the Boston Symphony and a well-known champion of new music, are now classics in the long history of composers cast aside because of their color or gender. She wrote him seven times, beginning in 1935, making the case for her symphonies. “To begin with,” she wrote in a long letter on July 5, 1943, “I have two handicaps— those of sex and race. I am a woman; and I have some Negro blood in my veins. I should like to be judged on merit alone.” In another: “Unfortunately the work of a woman composer is preconceived by many to be light, froth, lacking in depth, logic, and virility,” she said. “Add to that the incident of race—I have Colored blood in my veins—and you will understand some of the difficulties that confront one in such a position.”

She received two responses from Koussevitzky’s secretary. In 1944, Koussevitzky finally looked at one of Price’s scores, but he never conducted any of her music. Early in 1951, Price received a telegram from Sir John Barbirolli, who had heard about her during

his time as music director of the New York Philharmonic, asking her to write a concert overture or a suite based on Black American spirituals that he could play with his current orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, England. Price did write an overture—the score is now lost—and Barbirolli premiered it in the spring of 1951, but Price was in the hospital at the time for an extended stay and could not travel to hear it. She died of a stroke in Chicago two years later.

During the time Jean Martinon was music director of the Chicago Symphony, in the mid-1960s, his office asked Price’s daughter to send some of her mother’s scores, including the Third Symphony, to Orchestra Hall for Martinon’s consideration, but none of them were programmed. In 1964, an elementary school on South Drexel Boulevard, in North Kenwood, near Price’s old neighborhood, was named for her. But in 2011, Chicago Public School officials closed Florence B. Price Elementary after four years of chronic poor performance on state standardized tests. The manuscripts discovered in St. Anne contained many lost works, including two violin concertos and a fourth symphony—music that came painfully close to vanishing forever. The Chicago Symphony did not play another note of Price’s music until May 2013, when it programmed her Mississippi River Suite. Riccardo Muti originally planned to give the first Chicago performances of Price’s Third Symphony in Orchestra Hall in the spring of 2020, but those concerts were among the first to be canceled in the pandemic. This week’s performances of the Third Symphony—eighty-nine years after the Orchestra unveiled her first symphony (her second is lost, aside from a single page)—offer perhaps the most richly developed product of Price’s full talent, too long silenced.

rice completed her Third Symphony in 1940, nearly a decade after the First—and the same year as the publication of Richard Wright’s powerful and harshly realistic novel, Native Son, set amid the poverty of Chicago’s South Side. (It is also the year Hattie McDaniel

was given an Academy Award for her performance in the demeaning, stereotypical role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind.) Price said that her symphony was “intended to be Negroid in character and expression.” In other words, its roots lie deep; it is not merely a European symphony decorated with borrowed melodies. “No attempt,” she wrote, . . . has been made to project Negro music solely in the purely traditional manner. None of the themes are adaptations or derivations of folk songs. The intention behind the writing of this work was a not too deliberate attempt to picture a cross-section of present day Negro life and thought with its heritage of that which is past, paralleled or influenced by concepts of the present day.

Price’s Third Symphony, then, is truly a “new world” symphony. As in the old European model—including Dvořák’s long-famous New World Symphony of 1893—there are four movements in the familiar sequence: a broad and vigorous opening Allegro in sonata form, a slow movement, a dance-like “scherzo,” and a big, rousing finale. But the material they are made from—the colors of their harmonies, the cut of their melodies, the sonorities of the instrumental combinations—often come from a different world.

The Third Symphony marks an advance over the score Stock introduced. Price is here writing for a larger orchestra than before, with a particularly active percussion section, and she shows a more highly refined sense of instrumental color.

The music is as richly melodic as in her earlier scores, but Price’s harmonies have grown more complex, even tonally ambiguous. The slow second movement is rooted in a kind of call-andresponse use of antiphonal choirs of instruments, with a suggestion of an “Amen” cadence at the end. For the third movement—where Mozart wrote minuets and Beethoven composed scherzos—Price writes “Juba,” based on the syncopations of “pattin’ juba”—the sort of slave fiddler and banjo player music Solomon Northup

describes in his 1853 autobiography, Twelve Years a Slave: The patting is performed by striking the hands on the knees, then striking the hands together, then striking the right shoulder with one hand, the left with the other— all the while keeping time with the feet and singing.

The finale is more conventional, but no less stirring.

In one of her letters to Koussevitzsky, this one from the autumn of 1941, Price tries to find convincing words for her distinctive music and her very modern understanding of Black music’s consequential—and essential—place in American life and culture: I have a symphony in which I tried to portray a cross section of Negro life and psychology as it is today, influenced by urban life north of the Mason and Dixon line. It is not “program” music. I merely had in mind the life and music of the Negro of today and for that reason treated my themes in a manner different from what I would have if I had centered my attention upon the religious themes of antebellum days, or yet the rag-time and jazz which followed; rather a fusion of these, colored by present cultural influences.

It appears that her time has come at last.

As the children’s book says at the end, “Today Florence’s music can be heard all around the world, just like she dreamed of when she was young.”

profiles Riccardo Muti Conductor Riccardo Muti is one of the world’s preeminent conductors. In 2010, he became the tenth music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It was recently announced that he would extend his tenure through the 2022–23 season at the request of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. Muti’s leadership has been distinguished by the strength of his artistic partnership with the Orchestra; his dedication to performing great works of the past and present, including thirteen world premieres to date; the enthusiastic reception he and the CSO have received on national and international tours; and eight recordings on the CSO Resound label, with three Grammy awards among them. In addition, his contributions to the cultural life of Chicago— with performances throughout its many neighborhoods and at Orchestra Hall—have made a lasting impact on the city.

Born in Naples, Riccardo Muti studied piano under Vincenzo Vitale at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella, graduating with distinction.

He subsequently received a diploma in composition and conducting from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan under the guidance of Bruno Bettinelli and Antonino Votto.

He first came to the attention of critics and the public in 1967, when he won the Guido Cantelli Conducting Competition, by unanimous vote of the jury, in Milan. In 1968, he became principal conductor of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a position he held until 1980. In 1971, Muti was invited by Herbert von Karajan to conduct at the Salzburg Festival, the first of many occasions, which led to a celebration of fifty years of artistic collaboration with the Austrian festival in 2020.

During the 1970s, Muti was chief conductor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra (1972–1982), succeeding Otto Klemperer. From 1980 to 1992, he inherited the position of music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from Eugene Ormandy.

From 1986 to 2005, he was music director of Teatro alla Scala, and during that time, he directed major projects such as the three Mozart/Da Ponte operas and Wagner’s Ring cycle in addition to his exceptional contributions to the Verdi repertoire. His tenure as music director of Teatro alla Scala, the longest in its history, culminated in the triumphant reopening of the restored opera house on December 7, 2004, with Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta.

Over the course of his extraordinary career, Riccardo Muti has conducted the most important orchestras in the world: from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and from the New York Philharmonic to the Orchestre National de France; as well as the Vienna Philharmonic, an orchestra to which he is linked by particularly close and important ties, and with which he has appeared at the Salzburg Festival since 1971. When Muti was invited to lead the Vienna Philharmonic’s 150th-anniversary concert, the orchestra presented him with the Golden Ring, a special sign of esteem and affection, awarded only to a few select conductors. In 2021, he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in the New Year’s Concert for the sixth time.

Muti has received numerous international honors over the course of his career. He is Cavaliere di Gran Croce of the Italian Republic and a recipient of the German Verdienstkreuz.

He received the decoration of Officer of the Legion of Honor from French President Nicolas Sarkozy. He was made an honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. The Salzburg Mozarteum awarded him its silver medal for his contribution to Mozart’s music, and in Vienna, he was elected an honorary member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna Hofmusikkapelle, and Vienna State Opera. The State of Israel has honored him with the Wolf Prize in the arts. In July 2018, President Petro Poroshenko presented Muti with the State Award of Ukraine during the Roads of Friendship concert at the Ravenna Festival in Italy following earlier performances in Kiev. In September 2010, Riccardo Muti became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was named 2010 Musician of the Year by Musical America. In 2011, Muti was selected as the recipient of the coveted Birgit Nilsson Prize. In 2011, he received the Opera News Award in New York City and Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. That summer, he was named an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic and honorary director for life of the Rome Opera. In May 2012, he was awarded the highest papal honor: the Knight of the Grand Cross First Class of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Benedict XVI. In 2016, he was honored by the Japanese government with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star. On August 15, 2021, Muti received the Great Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria, the highest possible civilian honor from the Austrian government.

Passionate about teaching young musicians, Muti founded the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra in 2004 and the Riccardo Muti Italian Opera Academy in 2015. The purpose of the Italian Opera Academy—which takes place in Italy, as well as in Japan since 2019 as part of a multi-year collaboration with the Tokyo Spring Festival—is to pass on Muti’s expertise to young musicians and to foster a better understanding of the complex journey to the realization of an opera. Through Le vie dell’Amicizia (The Roads of Friendship), a project of the Ravenna Festival in Italy, he has conducted in many of the world’s most troubled areas in order to bring attention to civic and social issues. Muti Shares the Meaning of Music with Young Musicians

On the evening of Monday, April 11, more than 100 musicians gathered on the stage of Orchestra Hall for an open rehearsal led by Riccardo Muti, the culminating event of the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit. Fifty members of the Festival Orchestra were students from Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Washington (D.C.). With an audience of more than 800 in attendance, these young musicians rehearsed Franz Liszt’s Les préludes alongside musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Chicago Sinfonietta’s Project Inclusion. Muti addressed the orchestra members and their families and supporters in the audience before beginning the rehearsal: “The orchestra is the example of how a society should be . . . should work. You see the violins, violas, celli, tromboni, oboi, flauti . . . different instruments that play different parts, but not one part against the other part. . . . We are here—every orchestra and every chorus—singing and playing different parts in order to reach the final goal, which is la bellezza: beauty, harmony for everybody. You will play different parts, but if the parts come together in sin-fo-nia, like the Greek symphōnos, then the result will be ‘good,’ with a capital G, for everybody.” Maestro Muti has championed the training of young musicians throughout his tenure as the CSO’s music director.

chicago symphony orchestra The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is consistently hailed as one of the world’s leading orchestras, and in September 2010, renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti became its tenth music director.

During his tenure, the Orchestra has deepened its engagement with the Chicago community, nurtured its legacy while supporting a new generation of musicians and composers, and collaborated with visionary artists.

The history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began in 1889, when Theodore Thomas, then the leading conductor in America and a recognized music pioneer, was invited by Chicago businessman Charles Norman Fay to establish a symphony orchestra here.

Thomas’s aim to build a permanent orchestra with performance capabilities of the highest quality was realized at the first concerts in October 1891 in the Auditorium Theatre. Thomas served as music director until his death in January 1905—just three weeks after the dedication of Orchestra Hall, the Orchestra’s permanent home designed by Daniel Burnham.

Frederick Stock, recruited by Thomas to the viola section in 1895, became assistant conductor in 1899 and succeeded the Orchestra’s founder. His tenure lasted thirty-seven years, from 1905 to 1942—the longest of the Orchestra’s music directors. Dynamic and innovative, the Stock years saw the founding of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the first training orchestra in the United States affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, in 1919. Stock also established youth auditions, organized the first subscription concerts especially for children, and began a series of popular concerts.

Three eminent conductors headed the Orchestra during the following decade: Désiré Defauw was music director from 1943 to 1947; Artur Rodzinski assumed the post in 1947–48; and Rafael Kubelík led the ensemble for three seasons from 1950 to 1953.

The next ten years belonged to Fritz Reiner, whose recordings with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are still considered performance hallmarks. It was Reiner who invited Margaret Hillis to form the Chicago Symphony Chorus in 1957. For the five seasons from 1963 to 1968, Jean Martinon held the position of music director.

Sir Georg Solti, the Orchestra’s eighth music director, served from 1969 until 1991. His arrival launched one of the most successful musical partnerships of our time, and the CSO made its first overseas tour to Europe in 1971 under his direction, along with numerous award-winning recordings. Solti then held

the title of music director laureate and returned to conduct the Orchestra for several weeks each season until his death in September 1997.

Daniel Barenboim was named music director designate in January 1989, and he became the Orchestra’s ninth music director in September 1991, a position he held until June 2006. His tenure was distinguished by the opening of Symphony Center in 1997, highly praised operatic productions at Orchestra Hall, numerous appearances with the Orchestra in the dual role of pianist and conductor, twenty-one international tours, and the appointment of Duain Wolfe as the Chorus’s second director.

Pierre Boulez’s long-standing relationship with the Orchestra led to his appointment as principal guest conductor in 1995. He was named Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus in 2006, a position he held until his death in January 2016. Only two others have served as principal guest conductors: Carlo Maria Giulini, who appeared in Chicago regularly in the late 1950s, was named to the post in 1969, serving until 1972; Claudio Abbado held the position from 1982 to 1985. From 2006 to 2010, Bernard Haitink was the Orchestra’s first principal conductor. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma served as the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant from 2010 to 2019. Hilary Hahn currently is the CSO’s Artist-in-Residence, a role that brings her to Chicago for multiple residencies each season.

Jessie Montgomery is the current Mead Composerin-Residence. She follows ten highly regarded composers in this role, including John Corigliano and Shulamit Ran—both winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Music—and Missy Mazzoli, who completed her threeyear tenure in June 2021. In addition to composing works for the CSO, Montgomery curates the contemporary MusicNOW series.

The Orchestra first performed at Ravinia Park in 1905 and appeared frequently through August 1931, after which the park was closed for most of the Great Depression. In August 1936, the Orchestra helped to inaugurate the first season of the Ravinia Festival, and it has been in residence nearly every summer since.

Since 1916, recording has been a significant part of the Orchestra’s activities. Current releases on CSO Resound, the Orchestra’s independent recording label, include the Grammy Award–winning release of Verdi’s Requiem led by Riccardo Muti. Recordings by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have earned sixty-three Grammy awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
