a note from the chair and the president Welcome to Symphony Center. We are delighted that you have joined us this spring for an array of exceptional performances.

At the end of March, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returns to Chicago to conduct the world premiere of Orpheus Undone by the CSO’s former Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli; Bruckner’s Second Symphony; and Mahler’s beautiful RückertLieder, as sung by mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča in her CSO debut and for the annual Symphony Ball concert.

The following week, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins Muti and the CSO in Britten’s Piano Concerto.

When he returns in late April, Muti leads the world premiere of current Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, in addition to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony and Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto no. 2, featuring CSO Principal Bass Alexander Hanna as soloist.

For Muti’s final residency of the season, in June, he and the Orchestra perform Brahms’s First Symphony and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. These concerts are followed by the highly anticipated performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, featuring an incredible cast of singers and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and is not be missed. The CSO and Muti conclude the season with a special free-admission Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park on June 27.

In addition to concerts with Maestro Muti, the Orchestra welcomes returning guest conductors Jaap van Zweden, Julian Rachlin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and James Gaffigan, and Klaus Mäkelä and Karina Canellakis in their debuts.

The Symphony Center Presents Piano series features Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, Evgeny Kissin, and Denis Kozhukhin in his debut. The SCP Jazz series continues with performances by Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade in A MoodSwing Reunion and double-bill performances by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and pianist Bill Charlap with the Artemis jazz ensemble and Sean Jones’s Dizzy Spellz with the Thaddeus Tukes Quintet. Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant rounds out the season.

R

iccardo Muti’s final season as music director pays tribute to his remarkable bond with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and celebrates the communicative power of his music making that has galvanized Chicago audiences over these past thirteen years.

Muti’s concerts combine classics with discoveries, and reunite him with longtime colleagues and friends. Each program highlights a different aspect of the acclaimed Muti-CSO partnership, now at its peak after playing some 500 concerts together—reviving signature pieces, showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, and inviting beloved guest artists back to our stage.

Throughout the season, Muti will conduct key works from his Chicago years—Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, which capped his first concert with the Orchestra fifty years ago

next summer; and Respighi’s Pines of Rome, the dazzling finale of his first concert as music director, in Millennium Park in 2010. Muti will return to music by Schubert and Tchaikovsky, whose complete symphonies he surveyed so memorably with the Orchestra. And he is reuniting with pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Julia Fischer, and pianist Maurizio Pollini, who makes his first appearance with the Orchestra in a decade. Continuing his annual tradition of showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, Muti joins Concertmaster Robert Chen in Mozart, longtime Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny in the concerto Lalo Schifrin wrote with him in mind, and David Herbert, one of Muti’s earliest principal appointments, in William Kraft’s First Timpani Concerto.

For the first time in Chicago, Muti will lead Rachmaninov’s haunting Second Symphony and Prokofiev’s dazzling Fifth. He will give

In February, Phillip Huscher met with Riccardo Muti to discuss upcoming performances as well as reflections on his time as music director and his enduring relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is an excerpt from their conversation.

Phillip Huscher: In September, I was so struck that after a year and a half, it took one rehearsal with the Orchestra to get back to where you left off, like best friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.

Riccardo Muti: Sì, my years with this orchestra have been twelve years of beautiful musical life. Never friction. Everything was always very natural, very friendly, and the atmosphere has been unique. I love this orchestra.

PH: You have appointed twenty-five players.

RM: Twenty-five? I didn’t remember the number, but one thing I know, twenty-five fantastic players. Every time a music director, together with the committee, chooses a new player, it is a huge responsibility. It means that you are choosing a player for the next thirty, forty years. I think that in this case, I have chosen—together with my colleagues—twenty-five wonderful musicians. (continued)

PH: Emerging from COVID, what are your thoughts now on performances in the concert hall versus streaming and recording?

RM: Of course, the future is bringing new media—new possibilities. There is some advantage to that. For example, you can do a concert in Chicago, or in Berlin, or Vienna, and it can be seen immediately in every part of the world. That means you don’t have only 2,000 or 3,000 people that listen to the concert, but, theoretically, endless people. This is something that culturally can be an advantage. But music should be experienced live, directly. Because the presence of the public is very important to give a certain energy, positive or negative, to the performers. . . . We play for them. Without the public, we have no reason to exist.

PH: The bond you have with the CSO is very strong. What are your hopes for the Orchestra?

RM: My dream for the future is that this orchestra can speak to the world from Chicago, and not only to the Chicago audience. . . . The world wants to have the Chicago Symphony, so this is a responsibility that important people— culturally speaking and economically speaking—must keep in mind. It is a responsibility to have this great orchestra here and to make it possible for this orchestra to speak to the world every day. It is a dream. It is a need for the new generations.

the U.S. premiere of the recently discovered Solemn Prelude by the British composer of African descent Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and unveil a new work by Jessie Montgomery, the sixth Mead Composer-in-Residence to be appointed by Muti. At the season’s end, he will lead his first Chicago performances of Beethoven’s sublime Missa solemnis, a towering work of sacred vocal music that is a testament to the very soul and spirit of music.

Program after program is designed to demonstrate our tenth music director’s unique passion for communicating the solace and joy that music alone can deliver. In Muti’s hands, these are pieces that draw us in with their quiet depth, or thrill us with unexpected drama and

Highlights of the 2022–23 Season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center Presents On March 29, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association announced its programming for the 2022–23 season. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 132nd season celebrates the musical legacy of Riccardo Muti and his thirteen seasons as the CSO’s tenth music director. This important chapter in the CSO’s history has been defined by a profound artistic connection between the Maestro and Orchestra that has resulted in exceptional music making admired by listeners in Chicago and around the world.

PREMIERES AND NEW WORKS Throughout the 2022–23 season, the CSO performs a wide variety of repertoire, including several works receiving their U.S. premiere or first CSO performances. Riccardo Muti will conduct the world premiere of a CSO Commission by Mead Composerin-Residence Jessie Montgomery and the U.S. premiere of ColeridgeTaylor’s Solemn Prelude.

Other U.S. premieres include the CSO co-commissioned works Diary of a Madman, a cello concerto by Lera Auerbach, written for and performed by Gautier Capuçon and conducted

SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS Symphony Center Presents (SCP) includes concerts highlighting the artistry of internationally recognized musicians in a variety of genres.

The SCP Orchestra series returns in the 2022–23 season, offering Chicago audiences the opportunity to hear performances by other great orchestras from around the world. The season includes performances by the Berliner Philharmoniker, which has not appeared in Chicago in a dozen years, with its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, with its new music director Gustavo Gimeno and violin soloist Maria Dueñas, as part of its centennial season tour.

This year’s SCP Chamber Music series celebrates exceptional string players and ensembles.

Violinist Midori collaborates with pianist JeanYves Thibaudet performing three of Beethoven’s violin sonatas including the Kreutzer. AnneSophie Mutter returns with the Mutter Virtuosi, an ensemble of talented Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarship recipients. Violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Daniil Trifonov perform a recital in March, and later that month, CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn performs solo works for violin by J.S. Bach. The distinguished violinist and violist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth join the Jerusalem Quartet to perform string sextets by Dvořák and Brahms.

The SCP Chamber Music series finale in June features the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet before it retires from the concert stage after nearly fifty years. Pianist Emanuel Ax joins the quartet for a special guest appearance.

The SCP Piano series includes the return of David Fray, Leif Ove Andsnes, Marc-André Hamelin, Emanuel Ax, and Evgeny Kissin. Two remarkable young talents make their series debuts in spring recitals, including Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. The series finale provides a rare opportunity to hear acclaimed Chopin specialist Maria João Pires.

In addition to the aforementioned SCP series, special concerts include Itzhak Perlman’s In the Fiddler’s House, an exploration of traditional

Klezmer music featuring Perlman performing with instrumentalist Hankus Stenky and Andy Statman, along with ensembles Brave Old World and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Next, tenor Juan Diego Flórez presents a recital with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. Finally, SCP and Lyric Opera of Chicago collaborate to bring together soprano Renée Fleming and pianist Evgeny Kissin in a unique recital program that features songs by Rachmaninov in honor of the composer’s 150th birthday anniversary.

World music offerings include Kodo, the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble, and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion.

Chanticleer and the CSO Brass will also perform their annual December concerts.

The acclaimed SCP Jazz series opens with Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés performing an SCP Jazz co-commission, his four-movement suite La Creación (The Creation) for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion, and vocals. Other artists include the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with vocalist Catherine Russell, tenor saxophonist Camille Thurman, and Hammond B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco; the Maria Schneider Orchestra; pianist, composer, and social activist Danilo Pérez; NEA Jazz Master and bassist Dave Holland with pianist Kenny Barron, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, and drummer Obed Calvaire; and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will have a two-day residency. In addition, the Monterey Jazz Festival tours to Chicago with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling; saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin; and pianist Christian Sands, who directs and performs with his trio members, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.

F

or young musicians, the experience of gathering with like-minded peers and being mentored by professionals from the classical-music field offers a priceless opportunity for learning and growth. Since it began in 2009, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Chicago Youth in Music Festival has taken this twofold approach, bringing together students from school orchestras and bands, community youth ensembles, and music schools to participate in coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and prominent conductors such as the CSO’s Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti.

After being canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic, the festival returns in April 2022 with an ambitious nationwide partnership spanning ten cities and with a focus on supporting extraordinary young musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music.

A new component this year is a summit that invites music teachers, administrators, and families of music students to participate in strategic conversation and collaboration. In partnership with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and the National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network, the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute presents the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit.

The Negaunee Music Institute is a cofounder and member of the advisory council for the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, launched in the 2019–20 season, with the mission of preparing young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools and thus, ultimately helping to diversify American orchestras. The National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network is, “a national coalition that works to align, promote, and develop equitable opportunities and

inclusive environments to advance BIPOC [Black, indigenous, and people of color] instrumentalists to thrive in classical music.”

Representatives of similar programs from cities across the United States have eagerly agreed to participate. The fifty-two students selected for the 2022 Festival Orchestra were identified through a competitive audition process and represent programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Washington, D.C. According to Director of Education and the Negaunee Music Institute Jonathan McCormick, it’s important for students, “to engage with peers who have similar dreams, aspirations, and challenges. The Youth in Music Festival will be a rigorous musical experience and a social event as well, so the orchestra can really bond.”

From April 9 to 11, students participate in sectional rehearsals and coaching sessions with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Chicago Sinfonietta in addition to attending a CSO concert conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Symphony No. 6 in A Minor The Sixth was the last of Mahler’s symphonies to reach the United States, in December 1947, more than forty-one years after the composer conducted its premiere. The Chicago Symphony did not get around to Mahler’s Sixth Symphony until 1968, after it had played all the others, including the unfinished Tenth. Even considering the typical fate of Mahler’s symphonies—launched with difficulty under the composer’s baton, misunderstood and often rejected by audiences and critics, and ignored by major orchestras and leading conductors during the decades that followed—the neglect of the Sixth Symphony is exceptional.

Mahler was the first to predict the reception of this symphony, the one his wife Alma said was his most personal work.

Soon after finishing it, he wrote to Richard Specht, “My Sixth will present riddles to the solution of which only a generation will dare to apply itself which has previously absorbed and digested my first five symphonies.” Even during his own lifetime, the Sixth seemed the least likely to catch on. After a handful of performances in 1906 and 1907, all under Mahler’s direction, there apparently were no others before his death in 1911. Even in Amsterdam, arguably the earliest camp of Mahler enthusiasts, it was not performed.

The deepest tragedy of Mahler’s career was not that he was neglected, unknown, or penniless—he lived the life of a musical celebrity, having become one of the most successful conductors of his time—but that he went to his grave believing that he had failed in his real life’s work. When he died in 1911, he did not expect that his Sixth Symphony would ever be played again, and he certainly did not know that people would ever appreciate his music. Arnold Schoenberg, whose own music still has not found a large and sympathetic audience, understood Mahler’s profound sadness only too well. How will they seek to answer for this: that Mahler had to say “It seems I have been in error”? How will they seek to justify themselves when they are accused of having brought one of the greatest composers of all time to the point where he was deprived of the sole, the highest, recompense found when the artist’s faith in himself allows him to say: “I have not been in error”?

Perhaps Mahler did not truly believe that he was in error. For one thing, important musicians and fellow composers, starting with Schoenberg, valued what his music had to say and seemed to understand its importance.

Schoenberg, who would himself turn traditional harmony on its head, admired “the boldness of harmony” in Mahler’s Sixth Symphony.

He also wrote an insightful and admiring analysis of the gentle melodies of the Andante. Both Alban Berg and Anton Webern, the two students of Schoenberg who made history themselves, thought the Sixth Symphony the finest of all Mahler’s works. Berg told Webern that Mahler’s was “the only Sixth, despite the Pastoral.”

Like nearly all Mahler’s symphonies, the Sixth began on a summer holiday. In June 1903, Mahler, his wife Alma, and their little girl Maria arrived at their summer villa in Maiernigg on the Wörthersee, where for the third summer Mahler would find the peace that made it possible for him to compose. He spent his days deep in the woods in a small, sparsely furnished Waldhauschen—a forest hut remarkable only for the fact that such extraordinary, even visionary, music was written in this plain, dark room.

That summer, he wrote two movements of the Sixth Symphony. Alma later remembered how “after he had drafted the first movement,

he came down from the wood to tell me he had tried to express me in a theme. ‘Whether I’ve succeeded, I don’t know; but you’ll have to put up with it.’”

The next summer, after another turbulent season as head of the Vienna Opera, Mahler returned to Maiernigg with Alma, Maria, and their new baby Anna. It was the most productive summer of his life: he completed the Sixth Symphony, began a seventh, and wrote the last of the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children). Alma was particularly disturbed by the intrusion of these songs into their peaceful family holiday: “I cannot understand bewailing the deaths of children who were well and happy, barely an hour after hugging and kissing them.” She saw unwanted dark clouds, too, in the symphony’s scherzo: “In the third movement he represented the unrhythmical games of the two little children, tottering in zigzags over the sand. Ominously, the childish voices became more and more tragic, and, at the end, died out in a whimper.”

But there was nothing in this new symphony more ominous than the finale. “In the last movement,” Alma wrote, “he described himself and his downfall, or, as he later said, his hero: ‘It is the hero on whom falls three blows of fate, the last of which fells him as a tree is felled.’ Those were his words.” Alma was worried by this dark, tragic work—for a while Mahler even called it his Tragic Symphony— and she feared that her husband, in writing this music, had altered forever the happiest time of their life together. Later, after fate had played its horrible role, Alma would write: No work had poured from his heart so directly as this one. We were both in tears.

So deeply did we feel this music and the sinister premonitions it disclosed. The Sixth is Mahler’s most personal creation and a prophetic one at that. In it, as in the Kindertotenlieder, he truly anticipated his own personal life.

In reviewing the sad events that followed the completion of this symphony, it is difficult not to admit a parallel with the three blows of fate Mahler had etched in music. In 1907, bad press, controversy, and rising anti-Semitism forced Mahler from his prestigious post as head of the Vienna Opera. That summer, soon after the family retreated to Maiernigg, Maria, the older daughter, fell ill with scarlet fever and died within weeks. Before Mahler could begin to recover from this shock, his serious heart condition was diagnosed—the final blow that would ultimately fell him as a tree is felled, to use his own words.

Whether it was prophesy, tempting fate, or simply music, the Sixth Symphony is Mahler’s only tragic work in the truest sense—the only one that fails to rise to victory, the only one in which the unnamed hero is utterly defeated at the end. No other work so unrelentingly asserts a single key: three of the four movements are planted in A minor, and, although Mahler is known for the way his symphonies end in keys never suggested by their openings, here he seems unable to escape the grim pull of A minor, and the final page ends with the same low A with which the first movement opens.

The work begins with military music—not the leaden funeral marches of the Second or Fifth symphonies, but a quick, driven march—soldiers’ music remembered from his childhood. There is the recurring sound of drums; Mahler calls for a larger contingent of drums and percussion here than in any other symphony. The march ends with a sound that becomes the symphony’s motto: a brilliant major triad that turns to minor while the drums pound the drillmaster’s rhythm.

After a quiet wind chorale, the impetuous “Alma” theme takes wing in the violins—a “great soaring theme,” as Alma described it—and each

time it returns throughout the movement, it is slightly changed, as elusive and bewitching as Alma herself.

Later, when the music calms, we hear from the distance the sound of cowbells. Knowing that, in 1906, conductors and percussion players surely did not expect cowbells in their symphonies, Mahler added a footnote to the score suggesting that “the cowbells should be played with discretion—so as to produce a realistic impression of a grazing herd of cattle, coming from a distance, alternately singly or in groups, in sounds of high and low pitch. Special emphasis is laid on the fact that this technical remark admits of no programmatic interpretation.”

Later, however, Mahler did say that the cowbells “are the last earthly sounds heard from the valley far below by the departing spirit on the mountain top.”

Mahler originally planned to follow the great sonata-form first movement with the scherzo, placing the calm Andante before the vast finale.

But at the time of the symphony’s premiere, in Essen in May 1906, he reversed the two inner movements. The first published score, however, kept the scherzo before the Andante—though with a note about Mahler’s second thoughts— and it is this sequence that most conductors today, Jaap van Zweden included, prefer, despite Mahler’s own apparent change of heart.

Mahler may have contemplated delaying the scherzo because it is so closely related to the mood of the first movement. Certainly the opening, with its driving A minor rhythm, sounds as if it belongs to the previous music. Two gentle trios interrupt the scherzo, both rocked by the totterings of little Anna and Maria, one in F and one in D (the keys, not coincidentally, in which the exposition and development of the first movement had come to rest). There is a great, prophetic orchestral scream—a premonition of the finale—just before the end, and then the last zigzagging of the two children.

The Andante, set in E-flat major, the most remote key from A minor in the tonal system, does indeed seem to come from another world, although it is still touched by the tragic tone

of the previous movement. One could learn forever from following this exquisite music, so delicate that a single note can disrupt the mood, casting sun or shadow, so subtle that a seemingly commonplace phrase is made unforgettable by an unexpected harmony or an added beat, like an extra breath. The cowbells sound from the valleys below, and the spirit of the Kindertotenlieder hovers.

The finale is, in every sense, one of the biggest movements in Mahler’s output, building slowly and masterfully through three massive climaxes, each crowned by a hammer blow. The music is richly varied and even quotes passages from the earlier movements. Mahler calls for a great array of instruments, including, of course, the sledge hammer. A cartoon in the German press in 1906 showed Mahler in despair over his Sixth Symphony: “My God, I’ve forgotten the motor horn. Now I shall have to write another symphony.”

The music is deadly serious.

It begins with an echo of the scream from the end of the scherzo—an unsettling explosion that unleashes sounds exotic even by Mahler’s own standards. From there, Mahler moves through music of sweeping complexity— his command of counterpoint is particularly impressive—toward the first of the hammer blows, a climax that lands in unexpected harmonic territory as the hammer falls fff. Twice

more, through vast and meticulously charted stretches, Mahler approaches exultation. And again, the hammer falls. At the end, nothing is left but a few threads of sound, one last horrible lunge, and the deathly sound of A minor.

This music was not easy for Mahler to bear.

Alma remembered that None of his works moved him so deeply at its first hearing as this. We came to the last rehearsal, the dress rehearsal—to the last movement with its three blows of fate.

When it was over, Mahler walked up and down in the artists’ room, sobbing, wringing his hands, unable to control himself.

At some point after the first performances, Mahler decided to omit the third hammer blow—the one that fells the hero. (At these performances, Jaap van Zweden omits it as well.) But Mahler could do nothing about the blows of fate that would soon befall him, and nothing could stop the heart condition that was already weakening him and shortly would kill him.

In the last ten years, Jaap van Zweden has had an international presence on three continents. He has been general music director of the New York Philharmonic since 2018, and of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012.

He has performed as a guest conductor with many other leading orchestras around the world, such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Vienna and Berlin philharmonic orchestras, and the London Symphony Orchestra.

This season, Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic perform concerts in New York at Alice Tully Hall, the Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and at Carnegie Hall, while David Geffen Hall, which reopens in the fall of 2022, is undergoing renovations. In addition to the centerpieces of the symphonic repertoire, he conducts world premieres of works by Sarah Kirkland Snider, Gregory Spears, Joel Thompson, and Joan Tower; a U.S. premiere by Nico Muhly in New York; and premieres in New York of works by Hannah Kendall and Nina Schekhar.

Recent highlights of Jaap van Zweden’s work in New York include Project 19, a multiyear initiative to honor the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (women’s suffrage) and a newly

staged production of Schoenberg’s Erwartung and Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle.

In 2018, Jaap van Zweden completed a fouryear project by leading the first performances of Wagner’s Ring cycle in Hong Kong, recorded and released on Naxos Records. The acclaimed performances of Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Parsifal—the last of which received the prestigious Edison Award for Best Opera Recording in 2012—are available on CD and DVD. Jaap van Zweden was born in Amsterdam. At the age of nineteen, he was appointed the youngest concertmaster in the history of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Almost twenty years later, in 1996, he began his career. From 2005 to 2013, he was chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, where he still holds the title of honorary chief conductor.

From 2008 to 2011, he was chief conductor of the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra.

Currently conductor laureate of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, he was its general music director from 2008 to 2018. In 2012, Van Zweden was named Conductor of the Year by Musical America, and CBS aired a 60 Minutes segment about him in 2018. He recently received the prestigious Concertgebouw Prize 2020, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra was named Gramophone Orchestra of the Year 2019 under his direction.

In 1997, Jaap van Zweden and his wife Aaltje founded the Papageno Foundation, whose aim is to support families with children with an autism spectrum disorder. The foundation, which has developed into a multifaceted organization, focuses on the development of children and young adults, and offers music therapy for children in their own homes. In addition, Papageno House, where young adults with autism can live, work, and participate in social activities, was opened in 2015. Funding models for the support of autism programs are in development, and the TEAMPapageno app has been launched, allowing children with autism to communicate with each other via music compositions.

chicago symphony orchestra The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is consistently hailed as one of the world’s leading orchestras, and in September 2010, renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti became its tenth music director.

During his tenure, the Orchestra has deepened its engagement with the Chicago community, nurtured its legacy while supporting a new generation of musicians and composers, and collaborated with visionary artists.

The history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began in 1889, when Theodore Thomas, then the leading conductor in America and a recognized music pioneer, was invited by Chicago businessman Charles Norman Fay to establish a symphony orchestra here.

Thomas’s aim to build a permanent orchestra with performance capabilities of the highest quality was realized at the first concerts in October 1891 in the Auditorium Theatre. Thomas served as music director until his death in January 1905—just three weeks after the dedication of Orchestra Hall, the Orchestra’s permanent home designed by Daniel Burnham.

Frederick Stock, recruited by Thomas to the viola section in 1895, became assistant conductor in 1899 and succeeded the Orchestra’s founder. His tenure lasted thirty-seven years, from 1905 to 1942—the longest of the Orchestra’s music directors. Dynamic and innovative, the Stock years saw the founding of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the first training orchestra in the United States affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, in 1919. Stock also established youth auditions, organized the first subscription concerts especially for children, and began a series of popular concerts.

Three eminent conductors headed the Orchestra during the following decade: Désiré Defauw was music director from 1943 to 1947; Artur Rodzinski assumed the post in 1947–48; and Rafael Kubelík led the ensemble for three seasons from 1950 to 1953.

The next ten years belonged to Fritz Reiner, whose recordings with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are still considered performance hallmarks. It was Reiner who invited Margaret Hillis to form the Chicago Symphony Chorus in 1957. For the five seasons from 1963 to 1968, Jean Martinon held the position of music director.

Sir Georg Solti, the Orchestra’s eighth music director, served from 1969 until 1991. His arrival launched one of the most successful musical partnerships of our time, and the CSO made its first overseas tour to Europe in 1971 under his direction, along with numerous award-winning recordings. Solti then held

the title of music director laureate and returned to conduct the Orchestra for several weeks each season until his death in September 1997.

Daniel Barenboim was named music director designate in January 1989, and he became the Orchestra’s ninth music director in September 1991, a position he held until June 2006. His tenure was distinguished by the opening of Symphony Center in 1997, highly praised operatic productions at Orchestra Hall, numerous appearances with the Orchestra in the dual role of pianist and conductor, twenty-one international tours, and the appointment of Duain Wolfe as the Chorus’s second director.

Pierre Boulez’s long-standing relationship with the Orchestra led to his appointment as principal guest conductor in 1995. He was named Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus in 2006, a position he held until his death in January 2016. Only two others have served as principal guest conductors: Carlo Maria Giulini, who appeared in Chicago regularly in the late 1950s, was named to the post in 1969, serving until 1972; Claudio Abbado held the position from 1982 to 1985. From 2006 to 2010, Bernard Haitink was the Orchestra’s first principal conductor. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma served as the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant from 2010 to 2019. Hilary Hahn currently is the CSO’s Artist-in-Residence, a role that brings her to Chicago for multiple residencies each season.

Jessie Montgomery is the current Mead Composerin-Residence. She follows ten highly regarded composers in this role, including John Corigliano and Shulamit Ran—both winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Music—and Missy Mazzoli, who completed her threeyear tenure in June 2021. In addition to composing works for the CSO, Montgomery curates the contemporary MusicNOW series.

The Orchestra first performed at Ravinia Park in 1905 and appeared frequently through August 1931, after which the park was closed for most of the Great Depression. In August 1936, the Orchestra helped to inaugurate the first season of the Ravinia Festival, and it has been in residence nearly every summer since.

Since 1916, recording has been a significant part of the Orchestra’s activities. Current releases on CSO Resound, the Orchestra’s independent recording label, include the Grammy Award–winning release of Verdi’s Requiem led by Riccardo Muti. Recordings by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have earned sixty-three Grammy awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
