a note from the chair and the president Welcome to Symphony Center. We are delighted that you have joined us this spring for an array of exceptional performances.

At the end of March, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returns to Chicago to conduct the world premiere of Orpheus Undone by the CSO’s former Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli; Bruckner’s Second Symphony; and Mahler’s beautiful RückertLieder, as sung by mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča in her CSO debut and for the annual Symphony Ball concert.

The following week, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes joins Muti and the CSO in Britten’s Piano Concerto.

When he returns in late April, Muti leads the world premiere of current Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone, in addition to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony and Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto no. 2, featuring CSO Principal Bass Alexander Hanna as soloist.

For Muti’s final residency of the season, in June, he and the Orchestra perform Brahms’s First Symphony and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. These concerts are followed by the highly anticipated performances of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, featuring an incredible cast of singers and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and is not be missed. The CSO and Muti conclude the season with a special free-admission Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park on June 27.

In addition to concerts with Maestro Muti, the Orchestra welcomes returning guest conductors Jaap van Zweden, Julian Rachlin, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and James Gaffigan, and Klaus Mäkelä and Karina Canellakis in their debuts.

The Symphony Center Presents Piano series features Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, Evgeny Kissin, and Denis Kozhukhin in his debut. The SCP Jazz series continues with performances by Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade in A MoodSwing Reunion and double-bill performances by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and pianist Bill Charlap with the Artemis jazz ensemble and Sean Jones’s Dizzy Spellz with the Thaddeus Tukes Quintet. Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant rounds out the season.

R

iccardo Muti’s final season as music director pays tribute to his remarkable bond with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and celebrates the communicative power of his music making that has galvanized Chicago audiences over these past thirteen years.

Muti’s concerts combine classics with discoveries, and reunite him with longtime colleagues and friends. Each program highlights a different aspect of the acclaimed Muti-CSO partnership, now at its peak after playing some 500 concerts together—reviving signature pieces, showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, and inviting beloved guest artists back to our stage.

Throughout the season, Muti will conduct key works from his Chicago years—Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, which capped his first concert with the Orchestra fifty years ago

next summer; and Respighi’s Pines of Rome, the dazzling finale of his first concert as music director, in Millennium Park in 2010. Muti will return to music by Schubert and Tchaikovsky, whose complete symphonies he surveyed so memorably with the Orchestra. And he is reuniting with pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Julia Fischer, and pianist Maurizio Pollini, who makes his first appearance with the Orchestra in a decade. Continuing his annual tradition of showcasing the Orchestra’s principal players, Muti joins Concertmaster Robert Chen in Mozart, longtime Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny in the concerto Lalo Schifrin wrote with him in mind, and David Herbert, one of Muti’s earliest principal appointments, in William Kraft’s First Timpani Concerto.

For the first time in Chicago, Muti will lead Rachmaninov’s haunting Second Symphony and Prokofiev’s dazzling Fifth. He will give

In February, Phillip Huscher met with Riccardo Muti to discuss upcoming performances as well as reflections on his time as music director and his enduring relationship with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Here is an excerpt from their conversation.

Phillip Huscher: In September, I was so struck that after a year and a half, it took one rehearsal with the Orchestra to get back to where you left off, like best friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.

Riccardo Muti: Sì, my years with this orchestra have been twelve years of beautiful musical life. Never friction. Everything was always very natural, very friendly, and the atmosphere has been unique. I love this orchestra.

PH: You have appointed twenty-five players.

RM: Twenty-five? I didn’t remember the number, but one thing I know, twenty-five fantastic players. Every time a music director, together with the committee, chooses a new player, it is a huge responsibility. It means that you are choosing a player for the next thirty, forty years. I think that in this case, I have chosen—together with my colleagues—twenty-five wonderful musicians. (continued)

PH: Emerging from COVID, what are your thoughts now on performances in the concert hall versus streaming and recording?

RM: Of course, the future is bringing new media—new possibilities. There is some advantage to that. For example, you can do a concert in Chicago, or in Berlin, or Vienna, and it can be seen immediately in every part of the world. That means you don’t have only 2,000 or 3,000 people that listen to the concert, but, theoretically, endless people. This is something that culturally can be an advantage. But music should be experienced live, directly. Because the presence of the public is very important to give a certain energy, positive or negative, to the performers. . . . We play for them. Without the public, we have no reason to exist.

PH: The bond you have with the CSO is very strong. What are your hopes for the Orchestra?

RM: My dream for the future is that this orchestra can speak to the world from Chicago, and not only to the Chicago audience. . . . The world wants to have the Chicago Symphony, so this is a responsibility that important people— culturally speaking and economically speaking—must keep in mind. It is a responsibility to have this great orchestra here and to make it possible for this orchestra to speak to the world every day. It is a dream. It is a need for the new generations.

the U.S. premiere of the recently discovered Solemn Prelude by the British composer of African descent Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and unveil a new work by Jessie Montgomery, the sixth Mead Composer-in-Residence to be appointed by Muti. At the season’s end, he will lead his first Chicago performances of Beethoven’s sublime Missa solemnis, a towering work of sacred vocal music that is a testament to the very soul and spirit of music.

Program after program is designed to demonstrate our tenth music director’s unique passion for communicating the solace and joy that music alone can deliver. In Muti’s hands, these are pieces that draw us in with their quiet depth, or thrill us with unexpected drama and

Highlights of the 2022–23 Season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center Presents On March 29, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association announced its programming for the 2022–23 season. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 132nd season celebrates the musical legacy of Riccardo Muti and his thirteen seasons as the CSO’s tenth music director. This important chapter in the CSO’s history has been defined by a profound artistic connection between the Maestro and Orchestra that has resulted in exceptional music making admired by listeners in Chicago and around the world.

PREMIERES AND NEW WORKS Throughout the 2022–23 season, the CSO performs a wide variety of repertoire, including several works receiving their U.S. premiere or first CSO performances. Riccardo Muti will conduct the world premiere of a CSO Commission by Mead Composerin-Residence Jessie Montgomery and the U.S. premiere of ColeridgeTaylor’s Solemn Prelude.

Other U.S. premieres include the CSO co-commissioned works Diary of a Madman, a cello concerto by Lera Auerbach, written for and performed by Gautier Capuçon and conducted

SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS Symphony Center Presents (SCP) includes concerts highlighting the artistry of internationally recognized musicians in a variety of genres.

The SCP Orchestra series returns in the 2022–23 season, offering Chicago audiences the opportunity to hear performances by other great orchestras from around the world. The season includes performances by the Berliner Philharmoniker, which has not appeared in Chicago in a dozen years, with its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, with its new music director Gustavo Gimeno and violin soloist Maria Dueñas, as part of its centennial season tour.

This year’s SCP Chamber Music series celebrates exceptional string players and ensembles.

Violinist Midori collaborates with pianist JeanYves Thibaudet performing three of Beethoven’s violin sonatas including the Kreutzer. AnneSophie Mutter returns with the Mutter Virtuosi, an ensemble of talented Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarship recipients. Violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Daniil Trifonov perform a recital in March, and later that month, CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn performs solo works for violin by J.S. Bach. The distinguished violinist and violist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth join the Jerusalem Quartet to perform string sextets by Dvořák and Brahms.

The SCP Chamber Music series finale in June features the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet before it retires from the concert stage after nearly fifty years. Pianist Emanuel Ax joins the quartet for a special guest appearance.

The SCP Piano series includes the return of David Fray, Leif Ove Andsnes, Marc-André Hamelin, Emanuel Ax, and Evgeny Kissin. Two remarkable young talents make their series debuts in spring recitals, including Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho. The series finale provides a rare opportunity to hear acclaimed Chopin specialist Maria João Pires.

In addition to the aforementioned SCP series, special concerts include Itzhak Perlman’s In the Fiddler’s House, an exploration of traditional

Klezmer music featuring Perlman performing with instrumentalist Hankus Stenky and Andy Statman, along with ensembles Brave Old World and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Next, tenor Juan Diego Flórez presents a recital with pianist Vincenzo Scalera. Finally, SCP and Lyric Opera of Chicago collaborate to bring together soprano Renée Fleming and pianist Evgeny Kissin in a unique recital program that features songs by Rachmaninov in honor of the composer’s 150th birthday anniversary.

World music offerings include Kodo, the Japanese taiko drumming ensemble, and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion.

Chanticleer and the CSO Brass will also perform their annual December concerts.

The acclaimed SCP Jazz series opens with Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés performing an SCP Jazz co-commission, his four-movement suite La Creación (The Creation) for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion, and vocals. Other artists include the Brubeck Brothers Quartet with vocalist Catherine Russell, tenor saxophonist Camille Thurman, and Hammond B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco; the Maria Schneider Orchestra; pianist, composer, and social activist Danilo Pérez; NEA Jazz Master and bassist Dave Holland with pianist Kenny Barron, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, and drummer Obed Calvaire; and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will have a two-day residency. In addition, the Monterey Jazz Festival tours to Chicago with vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling; saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin; and pianist Christian Sands, who directs and performs with his trio members, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn.

F

or young musicians, the experience of gathering with like-minded peers and being mentored by professionals from the classical-music field offers a priceless opportunity for learning and growth. Since it began in 2009, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s Chicago Youth in Music Festival has taken this twofold approach, bringing together students from school orchestras and bands, community youth ensembles, and music schools to participate in coaching sessions, rehearsals, and performances with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and prominent conductors such as the CSO’s Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti.

After being canceled in 2021 due to the pandemic, the festival returns in April 2022 with an ambitious nationwide partnership spanning ten cities and with a focus on supporting extraordinary young musicians from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music.

A new component this year is a summit that invites music teachers, administrators, and families of music students to participate in strategic conversation and collaboration. In partnership with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and the National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network, the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute presents the 2022 Chicago Youth in Music Festival and National Pathways Summit.

The Negaunee Music Institute is a cofounder and member of the advisory council for the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, launched in the 2019–20 season, with the mission of preparing young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools and thus, ultimately helping to diversify American orchestras. The National Instrumentalist Mentoring and Advancement Network is, “a national coalition that works to align, promote, and develop equitable opportunities and

inclusive environments to advance BIPOC [Black, indigenous, and people of color] instrumentalists to thrive in classical music.”

Representatives of similar programs from cities across the United States have eagerly agreed to participate. The fifty-two students selected for the 2022 Festival Orchestra were identified through a competitive audition process and represent programs in Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Washington, D.C. According to Director of Education and the Negaunee Music Institute Jonathan McCormick, it’s important for students, “to engage with peers who have similar dreams, aspirations, and challenges. The Youth in Music Festival will be a rigorous musical experience and a social event as well, so the orchestra can really bond.”

From April 9 to 11, students participate in sectional rehearsals and coaching sessions with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Chicago Sinfonietta in addition to attending a CSO concert conducted by Riccardo Muti.

By rehearsing with professional musicians, younger musicians experience firsthand the high level of technique and artistry to which they may aspire. “It’s so meaningful to play alongside a musician who is more advanced than you are,” McCormick said. “This can really accelerate a student’s growth.”

Eleven Gates When Anders Hillborg began his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, his background was in rock music. Suddenly, his musical world quickly expanded, as he studied with several teachers who, through their own teachers, provided an indirect link with figures as disparate as Carl Orff, world-famous for the punchy rhythms and sensual power of Carmina Burana; Morton Feldman, with his vast canvases of near stasis; Terry Riley, the earliest true “minimalist”; and the eclectic Hungarian visionary György Ligeti. (He later admitted that he smuggled the score of Ligeti’s Requiem out of the college library and kept it for a year so that he could study its uniquely complex pages.) Another of his teachers, Pär Lindgren, who specialized in electronic music, was, like Hillborg himself, a rock guitarist. For a composer finding his own voice in the late 1970s, that association alone was as powerful in its own way as Brahms’s influence on Dvořák or the impact of Debussy and Ravel on Martinů had been in earlier times. As Hillborg explains: My origins in rock music probably influenced my musical thinking a great deal; my compositions range from conventional rock music to wild experiments with microtonal structures, and, as opposed to previous generations of composers, maybe, I see no conflict in working with musical concepts so far apart. Experiment and tradition are not separate, but are constantly intertwined in the process of composing. Maybe a Stravinskian attitude.

Hillborg later worked with Feldman himself in Buffalo, New York, and also fell under the spell of the English composer Brian Ferneyhough, whose densely complex, “maximalist” works would seem to come from another planet from Feldman’s.

The first work of Hillborg’s that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played—Exquisite Corpse in 2005—provided an ideal introduction to his unique musical language, a world in which the extremes of his musical education meld. Exquisite Corpse is a kind of collective piece that makes unexpected and illogical connections between many different composers, past and present: a chord from Stravinsky’s Petrushka, a stylistic tribute

to Ligeti, a quotation from Sibelius’s Seventh Symphony, as well as material from Hillborg’s own pieces. “All these tricks that we use to liberate our creativity are often precisely just that, and are maybe interesting and important for the composer only,” he said at the time. But Hillborg has the rare gift for making something that triumphs over the bits and pieces of its creation.

Eleven Gates, begun just after Exquisite Corpse, unfolds as a sequence of wildly varied, distinct musical worlds. Some are less than a minute long; none are more than three or four minutes. “I entertained myself by supplying each of the sound worlds that the gates lead into with names that have a more or less surrealistic tone,” Hillborg has said. “D Major Still Life,” for example, is just that: nothing but a single, held D major chord. Because of the way Hillborg juxtaposes disparate ideas, he has often been called a surrealist. (The phrase that gives its name to Exquisite Corpse—“The exquisite corpse will drink the young wine”—is the famous punchline to a surrealist parlor game.) Eleven Gates, too, is filled with unexpected twists and turns. In Gate no. 9, a string quartet plays a chorale-like music that Hillborg admits is a “distant relation” to the theme-and-variations finale of Beethoven’s final piano sonata, op. 111. (The score was programmed as part of a Beethoven festival.) Since the work was written to be premiered in Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hillborg also quotes, in the fourth section, from an old Disney television

special starring Kalle Anka (Donald Duck) that is a Christmas Eve tradition in Sweden—he compares the fleeting appearance of Disney’s Aracuan Bird to Debussy unexpectedly dropping the Tristan chord into his piano ragtime, Golliwog’s Cakewalk. But it is the journey, the passing through these gates and these worlds, that gives the score its sweeping force.

he title Eleven Gates refers to the idea that the piece falls into eleven sections, each section being entered through its Gate either abruptly or by a slowly merging transition from the preceding one. Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 63 Prokofiev wrote his first violin concerto shortly before he left Russia in 1918; the second concerto was composed seventeen years later, as he was preparing to return home. Why Prokofiev decided to go back has been variously attributed to patriotism, opportunism, nostalgia, and political naïveté. In the United States, he had initially enjoyed great success as an important new voice, particularly in Chicago, the first U.S. city to embrace his exceptional talents. But eventually, he had found limited popularity and financial difficulty as a wandering pianist and composer in this country. In Paris, he was more successful and more comfortable, but he increasingly longed “to see real winters again, and spring that bursts into being from one moment to the next.” In 1933, he concluded that “the air of foreign lands does not inspire me because I am Russian, and there is nothing more harmful to a man than to live in exile, to be in a spiritual climate incompatible with his race.” Nearly all the music Prokofiev is remembered for was written in his homeland. And in 1933, he couldn’t foresee the harm that would ultimately come to him under Joseph Stalin, who, in a coincidence no work of fiction would dare, died on the same day as Prokofiev in 1953.

Most of Prokofiev’s celebrated Soviet contemporaries had either immigrated permanently, like Stravinsky and Nabokov, or stayed put, like Shostakovich and Pasternak. Prokofiev tried for the best of both worlds, although when he left Russia in May 1918, he expected to be back in a few months. But he found life outside his homeland too promising. Prokofiev received his first official invitation to return to Russia in 1923. He declined the offer, and the next year’s as well. When he did return in 1927, for a three-month tour, he was greeted as a celebrity. The next years were a time of increasing frustration—Prokofiev recognized the urgent need to settle on both a compatible musical style and a home base. He decided to resume Soviet citizenship as early as 1932. (He didn’t close up his Paris apartment until 1936, however.) In 1934, he paved the way for his move by publicly addressing the question of “what kind of music should be written at the present time” in the Soviet Union. For Prokofiev,

Raymond Niwa (1922–2020) was a member of the Orchestra’s violin section from 1951 until 1997, and he also performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and as a soloist with the CSO. For many years, he was active on the members’ committee and the contract negotiating team. His wife Eloise Niwa (1928–2013) was a Youth Auditions winner who made her debut as a piano soloist with the CSO at the age of seventeen on Children’s Concerts.

Together with CSO cellist Margaret Evans, Eloise and Raymond formed the Niwa Trio and appeared regularly on the Chamber Music series and participated in ensemble programs throughout the community. Eloise’s father Harold Matthies (1899–1977) was the building superintendent of Orchestra Hall from 1943 until 1967.

Their daughter Gail Niwa (1959–2021) was a Youth Auditions winner and debuted as a piano soloist with the CSO on Children’s Concerts at the age of eight.

Prokofiev recalled: In 1935, a group of admirers [of Soetens] asked me to write a violin concerto for him, giving him exclusive rights to perform it for one year. I readily agreed, since I had been intending to write something for violin at that time and had accumulated some material. As in the case of the preceding concertos, I began by searching for an original title for the piece, such as “Concert Sonata for Violin and Orchestra,” but I finally returned to the simplest solution: Concerto no. 2. Nevertheless, I wanted it to be altogether different from no. 1 in both content and style.

Prokofiev worked on the concerto at the same time as the ballet Romeo and Juliet during the summer of 1935; the two have much in common, particularly an ardent and voluptuous lyricism.

The concerto was begun in Paris, continued in a number of hotel rooms, and completed in Russia, a reflection of Prokofiev’s “nomadic concert-tour existence,” as he put it, but also

a reminder of how he straddled two worlds at the time.

T

he concerto begins with the solo violin playing an unaccompanied G minor melody, as if Prokofiev wished to establish from the outset the preeminence of melody and a new simplicity of language. The first movement, based on classical sonata form, is almost relentlessly lyrical; the essential drama of contrast comes only from the switch of key and mode to B major for the second theme. The second movement, in E-flat major, combines a light accompaniment, like the ticking of a clock, with a sweet and soaring melody in the violin. The mood is serene, disturbed only from time to time by more urgent and searching music. These roles are reversed at the very end, as the violin plays pizzicato triplets to the main tune, now low in the orchestra. In complete contrast, the finale is brash and athletic, with a rustic main theme that suggests peasants dancing and the unexpected use of castanets—a touch of local color that seems to predict that the world premiere would be given, on another of Prokofiev’s whirlwind tours, in Madrid.

The Firebird The Firebird opened on June 25, 1910; on June 26, Stravinsky was a famous man. The great impresario Sergei Diaghilev had predicted as much—at one of the final dress rehearsals he pointed to Stravinsky and said, “Mark him well; he is a man on the eve of celebrity.” Diaghilev was a good judge of such things, for in 1910 his circle

included many of the most famous creative artists of the time. He was also, perhaps, excessively proud, for he had discovered Igor Stravinsky—or, to be more accurate, he was the one who put Stravinsky in the right place at the right time. The rest was all Stravinsky’s doing.

The right place was Paris in 1910. By chance, Diaghilev had heard Stravinsky’s music for the first time just two years before, at a concert in Saint Petersburg. He immediately invited the twenty-six-year-old composer to assist in

orchestrating music for the 1909 ballet season in Paris. But Stravinsky owes his first international success to Nikolai Tcherepnin and Anatole Liadov, both prominent, though modestly talented Russian composers who declined Diaghilev’s offer to write music for The Firebird. (Richard Taruskin has debunked the beloved old story that Liadov, a famous procrastinator, initially accepted but lost the job when Diaghilev learned that he was just stocking up on manuscript paper at the time the first installment of the score was due.)

According to Ravel, the Parisian audience wanted a taste of the avant-garde, and this dazzling music by the daring young Russian fit the bill. The Firebird was Stravinsky’s first large-scale commission, and, being an overnight hit, it was quickly followed by two more. The first, Petrushka, enhanced his reputation; the second, The Rite of Spring, made him the most notorious composer alive.

Both of those works were more revolutionary than The Firebird—less indebted to folk melody and the gestures of other masters—and spoke in a voice of greater individuality. But The Firebird is one of the most impressive calling cards in the history of music—a work of such brilliance that, if Stravinsky had written nothing else, his name would still be known to us today.

lthough Stravinsky later called the Firebird orchestra “wastefully large,” he used it with formidable clarity and imagination. “For me,” Stravinsky wrote, “the most striking effect in The Firebird was the natural-harmonic string glissando near the beginning, which the bass chord touches off like a catherine wheel. I was delighted to have discovered this, and I remember my excitement in demonstrating it to Rimsky’s violinist and cellist sons. I remember, too, Richard Strauss’s astonishment when he heard it two years later in Berlin.” The score is filled with delicious details, though none so novel as the one Stravinsky rightfully claimed as his own, and, in the closing pages, a magnificent sweep unmatched by much music written in the previous century and little since.

With The Firebird, Stravinsky found instant and enduring fame. “And, oh yes, to complete the picture,” he later wrote, “I was once addressed by a man in an American railway dining car, and quite seriously, as ‘Mr. Fireberg.’ ”

had already begun to think about The Firebird when I returned to Saint Petersburg from Ustilug, in the autumn of 1909, though I was not yet certain of the commission (which,

in fact, did not come until December, more than a month after I had begun to compose; I remember the day Diaghilev telephoned me to say go ahead, and my telling him I already had).

Early in November, I moved from Saint Petersburg to a dacha belonging to the Rimsky-Korsakov family about seventy miles southeast of the city. I went there for a vacation, a rest in birch forests and snow-fresh air, but instead began to work on The Firebird. Andrei Rimsky-Korsakov (son of the composer) was with me at the time, and he often was during the following months; because of this, The Firebird is dedicated to him. The introduction up to the bassoon and clarinet figure at bar 6 was composed in the country, as well as notations for later parts. I returned to Saint Petersburg in December and remained there until, in March, I had finished the composition. The orchestra score was ready a month later, and the complete music mailed to Paris by mid-April. (The score is dated May 18, but by that time I was merely retouching details.)

The Firebird did not attract me as a subject. Like all story ballets, it demanded descriptive music of a kind I did not want to write. I had not yet proved myself as a composer, and I had not earned the right to criticize the aesthetics of my collaborators, but I did criticize them, and arrogantly, though perhaps my age (twenty-seven) was more arrogant than I was. Above all, I could not abide the assumption that my music would be imitation Rimsky-Korsakov, especially as by that time I was in such revolt against poor Rimsky. However, if I say I was less than eager to fulfill the commission, I know that, in truth, my reservations about the subject were also an advance defense for my not being sure I could. But Diaghilev, the diplomat, arranged everything. He came to call on me one day, with Fokine, Nijinsky, Bakst, and Benois. When the five of them had proclaimed their belief in my talent, I began to believe, too, and accepted.

Fokine is credited as the librettist of The Firebird, but I remember that all of us, and especially Bakst, who was Diaghilev’s principal adviser, contributed ideas to the plan of the scenario; I should also add that Bakst was as much responsible for the costumes as Golovine. My own “collaboration” with Fokine means nothing more than that we studied the libretto together, episode by episode, until I knew the exact measurements required of the music. In spite of Fokine’s wearying homiletics, delivered at each meeting, on the role of music as an accompaniment to dance, he taught me much, and I have worked with choreographers somewhat in the same way ever since. I like exact requirements.

I was flattered, of course, at the promise of a performance of my music in Paris, and my excitement on arriving in that city, from Ustilug, toward the end of May, could hardly have been

greater. These ardors were somewhat cooled, however, at the first rehearsal. The words “for Russian export” seemed to be stamped everywhere, both on the stage and in the music. The mimic scenes were especially obvious in this sense, but I could say nothing about them, as they were what Fokine liked best. I was also deflated to discover that not all of my musical remarks were held to be oracular, and Pierné, the conductor, disagreed with me once in front of the whole orchestra. I had written “non crescendo,” a precaution common enough in the music of the last fifty years, but Pierné said, “Young man, if you do not want a crescendo, then do not write anything.”

The first-night audience glittered indeed, but the fact that it was heavily perfumed is more vivid in my memory; the gaily elegant London audience, when I came to know it later, seemed almost deodorized by comparison. I sat in Diaghilev’s box, where, at intermission, artists, dowagers, aged Egerias of the Ballet, “intellectuals,” balletomanes, appeared. I met for the first time Proust, Giraudoux, Paul Morand, SaintJohn Perse, Claudel (with whom, years later, I

nearly collaborated on a musical treatment of the Book of Tobit) at The Firebird, though I cannot remember whether at the premiere or at subsequent performances. At one of the latter, I also met Sarah Bernhardt. She was thickly veiled, sitting in a wheelchair in her private box, and seemed terribly apprehensive lest anyone should recognize her. After a month of such society, I was happy to retire to a sleepy village in Brittany.

A moment of unexpected comedy occurred near the beginning of the performance. Diaghilev had had the idea that a procession of real horses should march on stage—in step with, to be exact, the last six eighth notes of bar eight. The poor animals did enter on cue all right, but they began to neigh and whinny, and one of them, a better critic than an actor, left a malodorous calling card. The audience laughed, and Diaghilev decided not to risk a repetition in future performances. That he could have tried it even once seems incredible to me now—but the incident was forgotten in the general acclaim for the new ballet afterwards.

I was called to the stage to bow at the conclusion, and was recalled several times. I was still on stage when the final curtain had come down, and I saw Diaghilev coming towards me, and a dark man with a double forehead, whom he introduced as Claude Debussy. The great composer spoke kindly about the music, ending his words with an invitation to dine with him.

Some years later, when we were sitting together in his box at a performance of Pelléas, I asked him what he really thought of The Firebird. He said, “Que voulez-vous, il fallait bien commencer par quelque chose” [Well, you had to start with something]. Honest, but not extremely flattering. Yet shortly after The Firebird premiere he gave me his well-known photo (in profile) with a dedication “à Igor Stravinski en toute sympathie artistique.” I was not so honest about the work we were then hearing. I thought Pelléas a great bore as a whole, and in spite of many wonderful pages.

THE FIREBIRD: A SYNOPSIS OF THE COMPLETE BALLET Fokine’s adaptation of the fairy tale pits the Firebird, a good fairy, against the ogre Kashchei, whose soul is preserved as an egg in a casket. A young prince, Ivan Tsarevich, wanders into Kashchei’s magic garden in pursuit of the Firebird.

When he captures her, she pleads for her release and gives him one of her feathers, whose magic will protect him from harm. He then meets thirteen princesses, all under Kashchei’s spell, and falls in love with one of them. When he tries to follow them into the magic garden, a great carillon sounds an alarm and he is captured. Kashchei is about to turn Ivan to stone when the prince waves the feather; the Firebird appears. Her lullaby puts Kashchei to sleep, and she then reveals the secret of his immortality. Ivan opens the casket and smashes the egg, killing Kashchei.

The captive princesses are freed, and Ivan and his beloved princess are betrothed.

profiles Klaus Mäkelä Conductor These concerts mark Klaus Mäkelä’s debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Klaus Mäkelä is chief conductor and artistic advisor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra.

He assumed the role of music director with the Orchestre de Paris in September 2021, and he has been the orchestra’s artistic advisor since the start of the 2020–21 season.

He is also artistic director of the Turku Music Festival. An exclusive Decca Classics artist, Klaus Mäkelä has recorded Sibelius’s symphonies with the Oslo Philharmonic in his first project for the label, released in March.

Klaus Mäkelä launched the Oslo Philharmonic’s 2021–22 season with a special concert featuring Kaija Saariaho’s Asteroid 4179: Toutatis, Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, two new works by Norwegian composer Mette Henriette, and Sibelius’s Lemminkäinen. A similarly wide range of repertoire is presented throughout his second season in Oslo, including major choral works by Bach, Mozart, and Sir William Walton; Mahler’s Third Symphony; and Shostakovich’s symphonies nos. 10 and 14 with bass Mika Kares and soprano Asmik Grigorian as soloists. Also featured are recent and new works by Sally Beamish, Unsuk Chin, Jimmy López, Andrew Norman, and Saariaho.

This spring, Mäkelä and the Oslo Philharmonic perform all of Sibelius’s symphonies at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and give additional concerts at the Philharmonie de Paris and the Barbican Centre in London.

Orchestre de Paris. For his first concert of the 2021–22 season, he conducted a new work by Chin entitled Spira, Strauss’s Four Last Songs with soprano Lise Davidsen, and Mahler’s First Symphony. His first season as music director also includes the music of Ligeti and Dutilleux alongside that of Biber, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Rachmaninov, and Stravinsky.

As well this season, he appears as a Portrait Artist at the Vienna Konzerthaus conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic and playing cello in chamber music. He guest conducts the Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra–Amsterdam, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Munich Philharmonic. This summer, he returns to the Verbier Festival to lead the Verbier Festival and Verbier Festival Chamber orchestras and to perform as a chamber musician.

Last season, Klaus Mäkelä appeared with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony, NDR Elbphilharmonie, Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Tapiola Sinfonietta. As artist-in-residence at Spain’s Granada Festival, he conducted the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, City of Granada Orchestra, and Orchestre de Paris. At the Verbier Festival, he conducted and played cello in a chamber music program.

Klaus Mäkelä studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Panula and cello with Marko Ylönen, Timo Hanhinen, and Hannu Kiiski. He has performed with several Finnish orchestras as a soloist; and with members of the Oslo Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony, and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France as a chamber musician.

Daniel Lozakovich Violin These concerts mark Daniel Lozakovich’s debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Daniel Lozakovich, whose majestic music making leaves both critics and audiences spellbound, was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2001. He began playing the violin near the age of seven, and made his solo debut two years later with the Moscow Virtuosi and Vladimir Spivakov.

He now regularly performs with the Orchestre National de France, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, RAI National Symphony Orchestra, and the Munich Philharmonic. He collaborates with the world’s eminent conductors, including Semyon Bychkov, Christoph Eschenbach, Valery Gergiev, Neeme Järvi, Cristian Măcelaru, Andris Nelsons, Vasily Petrenko, Lahav Shani, Tugan Sokhiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Nathalie Stutzmann, and Lorenzo Viotti.

Recent highlights include his return invitation to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in subscription concerts with Nelsons, his New York debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival with Louis Langrée, and debuts with the Cleveland Orchestra and Mäkelä and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Salonen. Notable touring highlights include engagements with Valery Gergiev in Asia and with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The 2021–22 season includes Lozakovich’s debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He returned to the Orchestre National de France, where he opened the season under Măcelaru; the WDR Symphony Orchestra–Cologne; and Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo.

On tour, he has appeared at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and the Vienna Konzerthaus. Lozakovich is a regular at the Verbier Festival; Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad; the White Nights Festival in Saint Petersburg; Aix-en-Provence Easter Festival; Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival; and the Tanglewood, Blossom, and Pacific music festivals, among others. He enjoys collaborations with Emanuel Ax, Renaud Capuçon, Shlomo Mintz, Mikhail Pletnev, Denis Matsuev, Khatia Buniatishvili, George Li, Seong-Jin Cho, Martin Fröst, and Maxim Vengerov.

At the age of fifteen, Daniel Lozakovich signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. In 2018, he released his debut album of Bach’s violin concertos nos. 1 and 2 and the Partita for Solo Violin no. 2. None but the Lonely Heart, his second album, dedicated to Tchaikovsky and recorded live with the National Philharmonic of Russia under Spivakov, was released in 2019. His third album, released in 2020 as an audio album and e-video, centers on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, again recorded live, with the Munich Philharmonic, marking the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

Daniel Lozakovich has received many awards, including first prize at the 2016 Vladimir Spivakov International Violin Competition and the Young Artist of the Year 2017 award at the Festival of Nations, the Premio Batuta Award in Mexico, and the Excelentia Prize under the honorary presidency of Queen Sofía of Spain. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe with Josef Rissin from 2012, and since 2015, he has been mentored

by Eduard Wulfson in Geneva.

He plays the “ex-Baron Rothschild” Stradivari on generous loan on behalf of the owner by Reuning & Son, Boston, and Eduard Wulfson; and the “Le Reynier” Stradivari (1727), generously loaned by LVMH.

chicago symphony orchestra The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is consistently hailed as one of the world’s leading orchestras, and in September 2010, renowned Italian conductor Riccardo Muti became its tenth music director.

During his tenure, the Orchestra has deepened its engagement with the Chicago community, nurtured its legacy while supporting a new generation of musicians and composers, and collaborated with visionary artists.

The history of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began in 1889, when Theodore Thomas, then the leading conductor in America and a recognized music pioneer, was invited by Chicago businessman Charles Norman Fay to establish a symphony orchestra here.

Thomas’s aim to build a permanent orchestra with performance capabilities of the highest quality was realized at the first concerts in October 1891 in the Auditorium Theatre. Thomas served as music director until his death in January 1905—just three weeks after the dedication of Orchestra Hall, the Orchestra’s permanent home designed by Daniel Burnham.

Frederick Stock, recruited by Thomas to the viola section in 1895, became assistant conductor in 1899 and succeeded the Orchestra’s founder. His tenure lasted thirty-seven years, from 1905 to 1942—the longest of the Orchestra’s music directors. Dynamic and innovative, the Stock years saw the founding of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the first training orchestra in the United States affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, in 1919. Stock also established youth auditions, organized the first subscription concerts especially for children, and began a series of popular concerts.

Three eminent conductors headed the Orchestra during the following decade: Désiré Defauw was music director from 1943 to 1947; Artur Rodzinski assumed the post in 1947–48; and Rafael Kubelík led the ensemble for three seasons from 1950 to 1953.

The next ten years belonged to Fritz Reiner, whose recordings with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are still considered performance hallmarks. It was Reiner who invited Margaret Hillis to form the Chicago Symphony Chorus in 1957. For the five seasons from 1963 to 1968, Jean Martinon held the position of music director.

Sir Georg Solti, the Orchestra’s eighth music director, served from 1969 until 1991. His arrival launched one of the most successful musical partnerships of our time, and the CSO made its first overseas tour to Europe in 1971 under his direction, along with numerous award-winning recordings. Solti then held

the title of music director laureate and returned to conduct the Orchestra for several weeks each season until his death in September 1997.

Daniel Barenboim was named music director designate in January 1989, and he became the Orchestra’s ninth music director in September 1991, a position he held until June 2006. His tenure was distinguished by the opening of Symphony Center in 1997, highly praised operatic productions at Orchestra Hall, numerous appearances with the Orchestra in the dual role of pianist and conductor, twenty-one international tours, and the appointment of Duain Wolfe as the Chorus’s second director.

Pierre Boulez’s long-standing relationship with the Orchestra led to his appointment as principal guest conductor in 1995. He was named Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus in 2006, a position he held until his death in January 2016. Only two others have served as principal guest conductors: Carlo Maria Giulini, who appeared in Chicago regularly in the late 1950s, was named to the post in 1969, serving until 1972; Claudio Abbado held the position from 1982 to 1985. From 2006 to 2010, Bernard Haitink was the Orchestra’s first principal conductor. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma served as the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant from 2010 to 2019. Hilary Hahn currently is the CSO’s Artist-in-Residence, a role that brings her to Chicago for multiple residencies each season.

Jessie Montgomery is the current Mead Composerin-Residence. She follows ten highly regarded composers in this role, including John Corigliano and Shulamit Ran—both winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Music—and Missy Mazzoli, who completed her threeyear tenure in June 2021. In addition to composing works for the CSO, Montgomery curates the contemporary MusicNOW series.

The Orchestra first performed at Ravinia Park in 1905 and appeared frequently through August 1931, after which the park was closed for most of the Great Depression. In August 1936, the Orchestra helped to inaugurate the first season of the Ravinia Festival, and it has been in residence nearly every summer since.

Since 1916, recording has been a significant part of the Orchestra’s activities. Current releases on CSO Resound, the Orchestra’s independent recording label, include the Grammy Award–winning release of Verdi’s Requiem led by Riccardo Muti. Recordings by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have earned sixty-three Grammy awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
