We are delighted that you have chosen to come and see the incredible Chicago Symphony Orchestra and other great artists and ensembles performing live in Orchestra Hall. There are so many great concerts here during the months of February and March, but we would like to draw your attention to a few of them.

Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti returns for two remarkable concerts, the first of which not only features Mitsuko Uchida performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 4 but also celebrates the eighty-fifth birthday of American composer Philip Glass with the CSO’s first performances of his Eleventh Symphony. Glass first came to Chicago in 1952 to study composition at the University of Chicago, and we are delighted to celebrate his music and his connection to our city with these concerts.

For the first time since 2014, Muti conducts Beethoven’s iconic Ninth Symphony with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The Chorus is prepared by its Director and Conductor Duain Wolfe, who marks his retirement with this program after more than a quarter century leading the ensemble. A tribute to Wolfe appears on page 10. Truly extraordinary artistic forces assemble for this seminal work that culminates in the “Ode to Joy”—a welcome affirmation of friendship and humanity.

In March, the Orchestra also makes its first appearance this season at Wheaton College for a concert conducted by Dame Jane Glover that features organist Paul Jacobs and the CSO’s Principal Oboe William Welter as soloists.

Musicians from the CSO also perform on the second contemporary MusicNOW concert of the season curated by Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery at the Harris Theater.

This is also a time for robust concert offerings by Symphony Center Presents.

In addition to four Piano series recitals, the Chamber Music series features the remarkable trio of Leonidas Kavakos, Emanuel Ax, and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Mitsuko Uchida. On the Jazz series, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performs two programs: one honoring Marsalis’s recent sixtieth birthday and the other, with special guest Bryan Stevenson, paying tribute to important moments and figures in Black history.

mong the highlights of Riccardo Muti’s three-week January residency with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra were two community outreach concerts. The first occurred on January 14 at Morton East High School in Cicero.

Muti, the CSO’s Zell Music Director, led an all-Beethoven program that included the Coriolan Overture and the Eighth and Fifth symphonies.

Associate Principal Horn Daniel Gingrich, a Morton alumnus, was recognized by the school at the beginning of the concert. “Enough decades had gone by that I wasn’t expecting to recognize anyone, nor anyone to recognize me,” said Gingrich, class of 1971. “But nevertheless, it was definitely fun. After fifty-plus years, the recognition I received was much stronger than I expected. This was our second concert there.” Muti and

he Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association celebrates Duain Wolfe on the occasion of his retirement from his role as the Chicago Symphony Chorus’s director and conductor. Only the second director of the Chorus since its founding in the 1957–58 season, he has been the tireless standard-bearer of an ensemble that represents the best in choral performance.

Wolfe first prepared the Chicago Symphony Chorus as a guest for a Ravinia Festival program of opera choruses in August 1993 and again early the following February for performances downtown of Schoenberg’s Friede auf Erden.

Concluding a three-year search, the CSO’s then music director Daniel Barenboim announced that Wolfe would succeed Margaret Hillis, founder and first director of the Chorus. He officially began on June 1, 1994, and since then has prepared the Chorus for over 150 programs during his twenty-eightyear tenure. Clarity, focus, rhythmic precision, power, and transcendent beauty are just a few of the adjectives that have been used to describe the Chorus under his leadership.

Wolfe’s profound knowledge of the operatic and choral canons, appetite for new works, and expert musicianship have resulted in a remarkable legacy of memorable performances. Another element to his success has been his tireless work ethic. His attention to detail and standards for excellence for his myriad responsibilities—from meticulous score study to his understanding of the human voice, from leading expertly organized rehearsals to managing rigorous auditions—have been an inspiration to colleagues, conductors, soloists, and vocal and instrumental musicians. He has also encouraged generations of young musicians with his conducting and mentorship.

Three Days with Hilary Hahn, the CSO’s Artist-in-Residence

On December 9, 2021, Hilary Hahn strode onstage with her 1865 Vuillaume violin, wearing a Carolina Herrera gown with a red, orange, violet-blue, and lavender skirt, and publicly launched her two-year term as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Artist-in-Residence with a quadruple-stop downbow. She played Dvořák’s Violin Concerto in A minor with verve and fire, whipsawing from aching lyricism to virtuosic technical passages, spun out with a passion that belied their difficulty. During rests in the solo part, she kept her posture engaged with the Orchestra, leaning into phrases and feeling the articulation, almost as if she were the conductor and not Andrés Orozco-Estrada. After the concerto, the near-capacity audience tried to match her powerful performance with applause, and she graciously rewarded us with the Largo movement from Bach’s Sonata no. 3 for solo violin, played with a contemplative intimacy that held the audience rapt.

The subscription concert marked Hahn’s first local appearance since the June announcement of her appointment as the CSO’s

Artist-in-Residence. She is the first person on whom the Orchestra has ever bestowed the title, and while she holds it, she will make multiple visits per year to Chicago for music making and community building. “Music is bonding,” Hahn says. “It’s healing. Every one of us has something in common beyond being in the hall at the same place, at the same time, listening to the same piece.” Hahn continued, “I think the common connections of humanity and music are really deep, and that’s what I like to explore in a residency.”

D

uring her December visit, organized by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute, Hahn spent a school-day morning at Northside College Preparatory High School.

For a session in the Cedric L. Hampton Center for the Performing Arts, she coached four young players on Grażyna Bacewicz’s Quartet for Four Violins, in what Hahn said was her first-ever coaching of a chamber group. After the quartet played through the piece and a gentle insistence that the shy group bow for applause, she asked,

surprisingly, “Have you listened to much organ music?” She talked about how the theme of the piece should pop out of the texture because of its distinctive character, something that’s easy to do on a pipe organ by changing the registration.

She took the players through a series of experiments—“try it drier,” “close your eyes,” “find the space inside the sound”—and wrapped up with compliments and more applause.

She then coached a string quartet on Waiting in the Misty Woodland, a piece newly composed by the quartet’s violist, Ellen Campbell. The piece jumped mercurially among the gamut of string articulations, from pizzicatos to long bowings. After the playthrough, Hahn waxed poetic about the opportunity offered when a musician works with a living composer, something she knows quite a bit about, prominently from her album In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores, a collection of twenty-seven encore-length commissions (Hahn said learning the music was “for me, the equivalent of twenty-seven violin concertos”).

“The composer can plant inspirational or aspirational ideas for the sound-world of the piece in the minds of the players, and the performers’ job is to inhabit it,” Hahn said. “The more rewarding it is to inhabit, the better,” she added. Campbell described the essence of the piece as the experience of traveling for Thanksgiving, seeing autumnal scenes through the car window, and finally arriving at the end. Hahn had the quartet play some passages again with this scheme of images in mind, committing to conveying mood over accuracy and setting up a dynamic effect like a cinematic scene break at the end.

bow, swept up in the attempt. “Don’t worry— that shows commitment,” Hahn said, with twinkling warmth.

The following morning in Buntrock Hall at Symphony Center, Hahn led a master class of students from the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, a nonprofit organization that removes barriers for young BIPOC musicians on their way to top-tier conservatory or university music programs and a partner of the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute. Hahn coaxed a bolder, brighter soloistic tone out of a thirteen-year-old playing Bruch’s Concerto in G minor. In an already polished interpretation of Korngold’s Violin Concerto, she answered a request from a sixteen year old to help her find more precise articulations. And for another sixteen year old bravely presenting the very same concerto by Dvořák that Hahn was playing with the CSO that weekend, she helped him find a more fiery tone in some difficult passages.

ater this season, Hahn returns to perform a mixed chamber program on April 1 with cellist Seth Parker Woods and pianist Andreas Haefliger as part the Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music series. Hahn and Woods will play a duo by Zoltán Kodály, she and Haefliger will play Beethoven’s Violin Sonata no. 10, and the trio will play be still and know by Carlos Simon, the current composer-in-residence at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The title of Simon’s piece comes from a quote from Oprah Winfrey, referring to the experience of mindfully feeling presence within calm. For Hahn, the idea resonates with her philosophy of music as a vehicle for human connection.

overlapping layers of presence,” she says.

“History, composers who have gone before me, the thousands of hours of great performances that have left some sort of mark in the space, or, more immediately, the audience—the presence of all of us together is really powerful.”

Future residencies will include more concert appearances, master classes, community engagement, and hopefully extensions of some of her own projects, such as the Bring Your Own Baby concerts, where she plays complex, ear-stimulating, un-stressful music such as solo Bach for caregivers to the smallest and squalliest audience members, in a setting where their noises and biological necessities are welcome.

Her greatest contribution to Chicago during her term, though, may be the chance for all of us to be exposed to her particular approach to music and music making: clear-eyed but not simplistic, cerebral but not sterile, self-aware but not self-serious. As she said in response to a questioner at Northside who asked how she came to the violin (the questioner herself came to it directly from watching Hahn play Mendelssohn’s E minor concerto on YouTube). “I didn’t have a moment where I said, ‘Can I please play violin?’ I was lucky to have stumbled across it,” said Hahn.

“I love the physical feel of playing it, of activating my voice, that it is somehow talking. It’s also close to the heart.” She paused. “It sounds hokey, but it’s also physically true.”

Our winter and spring 2022 season plans feature our hallmark mix of familiar artists as well as exciting debuts. Papillons, Op. 2 composed 1831

In 1828, Schumann’s mother bundled him off to the University of Leipzig to study law, a career she felt would assure his professional success. Young Robert, just turned eighteen, made a desultory effort at his classes, but he could not free himself from his long-standing ambition to make music his life’s work. The following year, Schumann began lessons with Friedrich Wieck, Leipzig’s most highly regarded piano pedagogue, but he found the endless diet of scales and etudes somewhat too astringent and life at the university not to his taste, so he decided to abandon Leipzig for a while. In the spring of 1829, he transferred to Heidelberg University to tinker with the law a little further, but he soon gave that up in favor of music. “The whole time he lived in Heidelberg,” according to his fellow student Theodor Töpken, “piano playing was Schumann’s main occupation. It really constituted his main course of studies.”

Schumann inevitably fell in with the town’s music lovers, whom he entertained with his ability as an improviser—“ideas would pour out of him with inexhaustible abundance,” Töpken reported—and his knowledge of recent piano music. From Wieck in Leipzig, the center of the German music publishing trade, he requested copies of works by Hummel, by Moscheles, and, most of all, by Schubert, then dead less than a year, for whom he had the highest regard. He especially enjoyed improvising in the manner of Schubert’s waltzes and got so good at it that

he was able to pass off as authentic one of his counterfeits (later no. 8 in Papillons) to the perceptive Töpken. He began noting down some of these Heidelberg dance pieces, and they became the kernel of the piano cycle that he completed after returning to Leipzig in 1831 to resume his studies with Wieck. Papillons, he called the work—“Butterflies”—a word richly layered with references.

The butterfly is at once the symbol of immortality—one was inscribed on Beethoven’s tomb—and of frivolity (as in “social butterfly”), as well as of transformation into a new being, which Schumann undoubtedly felt as a result of giving himself up to music. Butterflies also represented for him winged thoughts, and he proposed using butterflies as aerial messengers when he and Clara were later forbidden to correspond by Papa Wieck. In addition, Schumann found in his Papillons evocations of the Larventanz—which has the dual meaning in German of “Dance of the Larvae” and “Dance of the Masks”—that closes the flamboyant novel Flegeljahre (Teenage Years) by Jean Paul Richter, his favorite author.

It was in Flegeljahre that Schumann discovered a philosophy concerning the intimate relationship between music and the emotional life of the individual, which the writer rendered as the ability to escape from reality into the “dream world of musical images.” Richter often used musical similes to describe the emotional states of his characters, who habitually poured out their innermost feelings in piano improvisations. The final chapter of Flegeljahre, set in the make-believe world of a masked ball, describes the twin characters Vult and Walt (really the contrasting divisions of a single split personality). This was

a psychological concept that both frightened and fascinated Schumann because it seemed so disturbingly close to his perception of his own emotional constitution, which Linda Siegel in her study of the composer described as vacillating between “fits of depression with complete loss of reality and periods of seemingly placid adjustment to life.” Perhaps as a way of deflecting the distress aroused by Richter’s observations, Schumann made some attempts in the late 1820s at writing novels in his style whose chief characters were the poetic dreamer Eusebius and the heroically impetuous Florestan, which he later associated with the opposing sides of his creative personality.

Schumann noted the associations between Papillons and Richter’s masked-ball scene in a letter to his friend Henrietta Voigt, pointing out to her, however, that “I put the words to the music after it was composed, and not the other way around. Only the last piece [which ironically quotes the stuffy old Grossvatertanz (Grandfather Dance) then traditionally used as the final number at German dance parties] was evoked by Jean Paul.” He went on to cite specific passages in Flegeljahre: No. 2: “Punch room . . . ballroom . . . full of zigzag figures moving towards each other”; no. 3: “sliding about, a gigantic boot

wearing and carrying itself”; no. 4: “simple nun with a half-mask and a sweet-smelling bunch of auricula”; no. 6: “Your waltzing . . . good mimical imitations”; no. 7: “hot desert dryness or dry feverish heat . . . most earnest supplications”; no. 10: “exchange of masks . . . floating, gliding up and down . . . butterflies of a faraway island. Like a rare lark’s song in late summer . . . [At the end] the noise of the carnival is stilled. The clock in the tower strikes six.”

Schumann was correct in thinking that the novelty of Papillons, both in its aphoristic structure and its bizarre, nocturnal references, would unsettle the tradition-minded (Wieck found it not only “piquant, new, original, and full of spirit” but also “odd and American”), but the budding composer also realized that there was nothing else quite like it, and that it marked his as a distinctive voice, ready to be heard. Papillons is Schumann’s first masterpiece.

Schubert’s health nearly collapsed for good during the spring of 1823, when his suffering from blinding headaches and vertigo became so acute that he had to be admitted to the Vienna General Hospital in May. His treatment for what was probably syphilis (possibly mercury poisoning as his hair fell out, and he had to wear a wig for some time until it grew back) proved temporarily successful, but his health remained troublesome thereafter. He recovered sufficiently to complete two dramatic works later that year—the opera Fierabras (not produced until 1897) and the incidental music for the extravagantly eccentric Wilhelmine von Chezy’s play Rosamunde (a flop at its premiere in December)—and continued composing through the following year, when he began to turn his attention from songs and small piano pieces to the larger instrumental forms. He spent the summer of 1824 in Zselíz in Hungary, 150 miles east of Vienna, tutoring the daughters of Count Johann Esterházy in music, and was only too glad to get back to his friends and family in Vienna in September.

Though he was subject to rather painful loneliness in Zselíz, the quiet seems to have done his health some good, and his close friend, the painter Moritz von Schwind, reported that autumn that “Schubert is here, well and divinely frivolous, rejuvenated by delight and a pleasant life.” Schubert lived with his family outside the central city for a few months, and in February

1825, moved to the suburb of Wieden to be close to Schwind, whose company he sought out almost every day. It was during that spring, when his health had stabilized and his music was beginning to receive notice beyond the limits of his native Vienna, that Schubert composed his Piano Sonata in A minor, D. 845.

The A minor sonata of 1825 (the third he composed in that key; the earlier ones date from 1817 and 1823) was completed before Schubert left for a long summer holiday in Upper Austria with the singer Johann Vogl on May 20. The following four months, spent shuttling between Steyr, Gmunden, Gastein, and Linz, were among the happiest the composer ever knew. His reputation was then spreading quickly among Austrian music lovers, and everywhere he went he found new friends and old admirers of his songs and piano pieces. “He looks so fit and strong, is so full of good spirits and so friendly and communicative, that one is really overjoyed to see it,” wrote Anton Ottenwald, his host in Linz in early July. Schubert carried the manuscript of the new A minor sonata with him that summer, and created much enjoyment by playing it for music lovers at his various stops. From Steyr on July 25, he wrote to his parents, What pleased especially were the variations [i.e., second movement] in my new sonata, which I performed alone and not without merit, since several people assured me that piano keys become singing voices under my fingers, which, if true, pleases me greatly, since I cannot endure the accursed chopping in which even distinguished pianists indulge and which delights neither the ear nor the mind.

Soon after Schubert returned to Vienna at the beginning of October, the recently established firm of Anton Pennauer agreed to publish the sonata. The score was issued early the following year (with a dedication to Beethoven’s most eminent pupil and patron, the Archduke Rudolph, who, by 1826, had been elevated to CardinalArchbishop of Olmütz in Moravia) as Schubert’s “Premier Grande Sonate.” (His only other largescale piano piece previously published was the Wanderer Fantasy of 1822.) The sonata received favorable notices in the important journals Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung (Leipzig) and Allgemeiner Musikalischer Anzeiger (Frankfurt) during the following months, the first substantial reviews of any of his instrumental compositions. In July, he received a letter praising the sonata from the pianist, lecturer, and editor Georg Nägeli of Zurich, inviting him to contribute a work to a new anthology of keyboard music that he was assembling. Schubert replied that he would be glad to participate, though nothing apparently ever came of Nägeli’s invitation. Such international recognition made the summer of 1826 a time of considerable pride for Schubert, and justified his claim in an (unsuccessful) application for the post of music director at the Habsburg court that his name was known “not only in Vienna, but throughout Germany.”

Kathleen Dale noted several essential stylistic elements of Schubert’s piano sonatas: For him, sheer beauty of sound was an end in itself, and whatever his sonatas may lack in constructional strength, they gain in sublimity of tonal range, in graciousness of melody, in the unusual variety of rhythmical schemes, and in the exquisite beauty of the pianoforte writing. In his own treatment of form, Schubert showed great ingenuity and originality, as the analyst of his sonatas soon discovers—possibly to his surprise; certainly to his delight.

nlike Beethoven, Schubert made no attempt to redefine the classical four-movement sonata structure in his music, but sought rather to expand the genre’s emotional scope through greater lyricism and more far-flung harmonic peregrinations, qualities much in evidence in this A minor sonata.

The opening movement, sweetly nostalgic rather than heroically tragic, follows a leisurely sonata form: the first theme is marked by a snapping ornamental figure, the second by a brief repeated-note pattern. The Andante is a set of variations, the only such movement in Schubert’s sonatas, based on the ingratiating melody heard immediately at the beginning. A scherzo of wide dynamic and harmonic range and a breathless rondo round out this handsome creation.

Around 1905, during the difficult, poverty-ridden years after he completed his studies at the Liszt Conservatory in Budapest, Bartók was invited by a friend to spend a few days in the country. On the trip, he chanced to overhear one of the servant girls singing a strange and intriguing song while going about her chores. He asked her about the melody and was told that the girl’s mother had taught it to her, as her grandmother had passed it on a generation before, and that there were many more such songs. Bartók encouraged her to sing the others she knew, and he soon realized that this sturdy folk music was little related to the slick Gypsy airs and dances of the city cafés that had long passed for indigenous Hungarian music. He determined that he would discover all he could about the peasant music of his own and neighboring lands, and many of the years of the rest of his life were given over to collecting, cataloging, and evaluating this vast heritage. Milton Cross characterized the music Bartók discovered: The melody was severe, patterned after the rise and ebb, the inflection, of Hungarian

speech; the rhythms were irregular; the tonality reached back to the modes of the church. It was savage music: intense, passionate, strong, and uninhibited. Nothing quite like it could be found anywhere else.

The style of eastern European folk music profoundly affected Bartók’s creative work.

While his larger concert compositions display the essence of folk songs rather than quoting them directly, many of his smaller ones, such as this set of Fifteen Hungarian Peasant Songs, are based faithfully on the music that he discovered.

This collection, composed between 1914 and 1917, demonstrates the two principal varieties of Hungarian folk music: the free, declamatory style known as parlando and the strongly rhythmic dance melodies. The brief pieces are arranged in four groups: Four Old Dance Tunes, a scherzo, a theme and variations on a Dorianmode ballad, and Nine Old Dance Tunes. In 1933, Bartók arranged the ballad and eight of the Nine Old Dance Tunes for orchestra. Of the village music on which he based his Hungarian Peasant Songs, the composer said, “Folk melodies are a real model of the highest artistic perfection. To my mind, on a small scale, they are masterpieces, just as much as, in the world of larger forms, a fugue by Bach or a Mozart sonata.”

Beethoven’s younger brother, Caspar Carl, a bank clerk of modest success in Vienna, died of tuberculosis on November 15, 1815. Though Caspar seems to have lived with her contentedly, his wife, Johanna, was a woman of sullied reputation whom the composer characterized as “wicked and vicious . . . the Queen of the Night.”

Beethoven felt that she was unfit to raise the couple’s nine-year-old child, Karl, and he convinced his brother to name him as the boy’s guardian—two days before he died, Caspar Carl included that provision in his will. During the following hours, however, he had misgivings about taking Karl from his mother, and added a codicil that, in effect, named his wife and brother as co-guardians, thereby contradicting the earlier provision.

There ensued nearly five years of bitter legal battles between Beethoven and Johanna over the custody of Karl, who was mired in misery all the while by the unsettled state of his young life. The case was first decided in Beethoven’s favor in February 1816. Various subsequent proceedings were instituted by Johanna (usually after Karl had fled to her from the smothering attentions of his uncle), and the courts again formally took up the matter in 1818. Litigation dragged on for the next two years. The eventual settlement in 1820 was painful for Beethoven, not because he lost the suit (he won, but alienated the boy so thoroughly that six years later he tried to kill himself), but because the proceedings revealed

that he was without noble ancestors, a life-long belief he held tenaciously until it was publicly exploded in court. With declining health, shattered hearing, and family turmoil sapping so much of Beethoven’s energy during that time (he turned fifty in 1820), it is little wonder that that half decade was the least productive period of his creative life. Between the two cello sonatas, op. 102 of 1815 and the Piano Sonata in E major, op. 109, of 1820, the only major works that he completed were the song cycle An die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved) and the piano sonatas in A (op. 101) and B-flat major, and the Hammerklavier (op. 106).

The op. 101 piano sonata was largely composed during the summer of 1816 at Baden, a village a few miles south of Vienna, which Beethoven favored for his working summer retreats during the last years of his life: the Ninth Symphony, the Hammerklavier Sonata, and some of the late quartets all took shape in part there. The sonata was finished in November, after he returned to Vienna. The score was dedicated to, and almost certainly influenced in its elevated musical substance by Baroness Dorothea Ertmann, a student, friend, and long-time patron of Beethoven and one the greatest contemporary interpreters of his piano compositions. Dorothea was born into the family of a businessman named Graumann in Offenbach-am-Main in 1781, and moved to Vienna in 1798 to marry Baron Stephan von Ertmann, an Austrian army officer. By that time, Beethoven, living, performing, and publishing in Vienna since 1792, had established a solid if eccentric reputation with the city’s musical connoisseurs, and Dorothea wished to see for herself what all the fuss was about. “I was curious

to become acquainted with his newest sonatas,” she recorded in her memoirs.

So one day I went to the music store of Herr Haslinger, had several of them shown to me, and at once began to play them on a piano which was placed there. In my absorption, I never noticed a young man who stood modestly in the corner and who by and by approached me silently. What was my astonishment when of a sudden he took my hand and thanked me in the warmest terms for the excellent rendition of his sonatas. It was Beethoven! We became friends from that moment on.

She became a student of Beethoven’s in 1803, and thereafter remained both a close personal friend and an ardent champion of his music. Beethoven dedicated the A major sonata to Dorothea.

T

he flowing opening movement of the A major sonata, tender and meditative in sentiment (it begins on a dominant harmony, as though the music were already in progress), follows a seamless sonata form, without strong formal demarcations. The second movement, a spiritualized march, presents a bold, almost shocking contrast to the preceding music. The finale is approached by means of a quiet, introspective paragraph of precisely etched melodic figures and a brief recall of the opening movement. The finale itself is a sonata form whose substance is forged from the pervasive development of the steely hard fugal imitations with which it begins.

profiles Richard Goode Piano Richard Goode has been hailed for music making of tremendous emotional power, depth, and expressiveness, and has been acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of classical and romantic music. In regular performances with the major orchestras, recitals in the world’s music capitals, and through his extensive and acclaimed Nonesuch recordings, he has won a large and devoted following.

One of today’s most revered recitalists, Goode is a favorite of audiences in Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York, Houston, and Portland, as well as numerous colleges and universities around the country. In Europe, appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Edinburgh Festival, Berlin, and throughout Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are always highlights. His master classes, in person or online, continue to be hailed as truly memorable events.

Goode opened the current season with a mini residency at New York’s 92nd Street Y performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 25 with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and a recital of works by Schubert, Schumann, and Bartók. Additional recital appearances take him to Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chapel Hill, and more. Abroad, he reprises Mozart’s concerto with the London Philharmonic and David Zinman and returns to Italy and Wigmore Hall for recitals.

In recent seasons, Richard Goode appeared as soloist with Louis Langrée and the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra in a program filmed as part of a documentary celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of one of the country’s most popular summer musical events. He also toured in the United States with one of the world’s most admired orchestras and his recording

partner, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer. Other orchestral appearances include the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall; and in Europe with the London Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, and BBC Philharmonic.

An exclusive Nonesuch recording artist, Goode has made more than two dozen recordings over the years, ranging from solo and chamber works to lieder and concertos. His recording of Beethoven’s five concertos with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer was released in 2009 to exceptional critical acclaim and nominated for a Grammy Award. His ten-CD set of the complete sonatas by Beethoven, the firstever by an American-born pianist, was nominated for a Grammy Award and has been ranked among the most distinguished recordings of this repertoire. Other recording highlights include a series of Bach’s partitas, a duo recording with soprano Dawn Upshaw, and piano concertos by Mozart with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

A native of New York, Goode studied at the Mannes College of Music and the Curtis Institute. His numerous prizes over the years include the Young Concert Artists Award, first prize in the Clara Haskil Competition, the Avery Fisher Prize, and a Grammy Award for sonatas by Brahms recorded with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman.

Goode served, together with Mitsuko Uchida, as co-artistic director of the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Marlboro, Vermont, from 1999 through 2013. Participating initially at the age of fourteen, he has made a notable contribution to this unique community over the twenty-eight summers he has spent there.

In the fall of 2021, Goode joined the Peabody Conservatory as Distinguished Artist Faculty.

He is married to the violinist Marcia Weinfeld, and, when the Goodes are not on tour, they and their collection of some 5,000 volumes live in New York City.
