Negaunee Music Institute

The Negaunee Music Institute is the education and community engagement wing of the Chicago Symphony with a mission to connect people to the extraordinary musical resources of the Orchestra. Programming educates audiences, trains young musicians, and serves diverse communities, across the city and around the world.

Current Negaunee Music Institute programs include an extensive series of CSO School and Family Concerts and open rehearsals; more than seventy-five in-depth school partnerships; online learning resources; the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, a prestigious ensemble for early-career musicians; intensive training and performance opportunities for youth including the Percussion Scholarship Program, Chicago Youth in Music Festival, Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, and Young Composers Initiative; social impact initiatives such as Notes for Peace for families who have lost loved ones to gun violence, and collaborations with Chicago Refugee Coalition; and music education activities during CSO domestic and international tours.

Worldwide, the Negaunee Music Institute’s annual reach exceeds 200,000 through programming in-person and online.

CSO for Kids

For over a century, the CSO has presented programming for children. Today, CSO for Kids encompasses an array of live concerts, school partnerships, and digital resources that introduce young audiences to the magical world of symphonic music.

This program area includes thirty-six concerts that are attended by more than 25,000 children pre-K through grade 12 each season. To increase access, groups from Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are provided with free tickets and school bus transportation.

To deepen student learning, the Negaunee Music Institute maintains more than sixty in-depth partnerships with schools across the Chicago area. In addition to attending CSO for Kids concerts, partners host CSO and Civic Orchestra musicians for in-school chamber performances and coachings, and teachers participate in professional development workshops. The most intensive partnerships are season-long and empower students to create new artwork and grow instrumental music skills. The majority of school partners are with CPS. Online, students, teachers, and families can engage with educational content through CSO for Kids Digital programming.

Civic Orchestra of Chicago

Founded during the 1919–20 season by Frederick Stock, the Civic Orchestra prepares young professionals for careers in orchestral music. From October

through June, Civic members receive rigorous training led by Principal Conductor Ken-David Masur, other luminary guest conductors and a faculty of coaches from the CSO. The Orchestra also performs free and low-cost concerts in Orchestra Hall and in communities across Greater Chicago and anchors the annual CrainMaling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition and Chicago Youth in Music Festival.

Civic Fellowship Program

Through an array of experiences designed to build and diversify creative and professional skills, the Civic Fellowship program empowers participants to realize their full potential as artistically excellent, civically engaged, collaborative and entrepreneurial musicians.

The program’s curriculum has four major pillars: artistic planning, music education, social justice, and project management. Fellows serve as facilitators in projects like Notes for Peace, explore music by living composers, perform concerts at Symphony Center as well as in schools and communities across the city, mentor young musicians through the CSO-Connect program, design and implement independent projects, and more. Additionally, Fellows participate in enrichment activities including regular meetings as a cohort and professional development seminars with guest lecturers.

Percussion Scholarship Program

The Percussion Scholarship Program (PSP) offers intensive, weekly percussion instruction on a full scholarship basis to Chicago youth in grades 3–12. Students are selected for the program through a competitive application process that includes a provisional period followed by an invitation to participate through eighth grade. Select students are invited to continue through high school. The program meets weekly on Saturdays year round, and provides each student with instruments, lesson books and materials at no cost. PSP members also perform as an ensemble twice per year in Buntrock Hall at Symphony Center in addition to giving special concerts throughout each season. PSP boasts a roster of alumni who have gone on to some of the nation’s finest colleges, universities and conservatories, later assuming notable careers within and outside of music.

Young Composers Initiative

With leadership from former Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery, the Young Composers Initiative engages youth from across the Chicago region and empowers them to create new pieces of chamber music. Following a competitive application process, five students are selected to work with Montgomery in private lessons throughout the season, as well as a daylong practicum. Each student’s piece is premiered and recorded at

Symphony Center by musicians of the Civic Orchestra.

Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative

The Negaunee Music Institute is a co-founding organization and lead partner of the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative (CMPI), which is operated by the Merit School of Music and prepares young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools. Now entering its third full year, the Initiative supports nearly 100 fellows in grades 6-12. Students are admitted on the basis of musical aptitude and financial need. Select CSO and Civic Orchestra musicians are private teachers or mentors for CMPI Fellows, in addition to leading audition preparation workshops, master classes and panel discussions. CMPI Fellows are also invited to observe select Civic Orchestra seminars led by CSO musicians.

Notes for Peace

Launched in March 2018 in partnership with Purpose Over Pain, the Notes for Peace program uses the therapeutic benefits of music to support families who have lost loved ones to gun violence. With guidance from the Civic Fellows, guest teaching artists from the U.K.-based Irene Taylor Trust and professional vocalists, parents compose, perform live and professionally record their music, which is then featured alongside family photos and lyrics on

notesforpeace.org. To date, over 100 families have written songs to honor lives lost to gun violence.

Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition

The Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition is a prestigious concerto competition for Illinois’s top young soloists. Applicants audition live at Symphony Center for a distinguished panel of judges. Following a preliminary round, four finalists are selected to perform in the final round in Orchestra Hall, accompanied by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. The winner is featured the following season as soloist with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as part of CSO School and Family Concerts.

Presented jointly by the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Jerry Hou Conductor

Taiwanese American conductor Jerry Hou is building community and revitalizing the music field via collaboration with some of today’s most important musical voices. Hou began an association with

the New York Philharmonic and its music director Jaap van Zweden in 2021. He continues to work with the Philharmonic as an assistant conductor and made his successful debut last season in a Young People’s Concert. Hou returned for more concerts with the New York Philharmonic this year and leads the orchestra in seven concerts next season. Hou recently concluded his tenure as resident conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Jerry Hou will begin as music director of the Wyoming Symphony in the 2025–26 season.

Doug Waddell Conductor

Douglas Waddell is a member of the Grant Park Symphony and acting principal percussion at Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has been timpanist with the renowned Music of the Baroque ensemble since 1983, and as a member of the Contemporary Chamber Players of Chicago has performed and recorded a wide variety of twentieth century chamber works. Waddell has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and can be heard all over the world on hundreds of television and radio commercial jingles. Waddell considers his greatest achievement directing the CSO’s Percussion

Scholarship Program with his wife Patricia Dash.

Josh Jones Percussion

A native of Chicago, Josh Jones began his formal studies in percussion with the Percussion Scholarship Program. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music from DePaul School of Music and was the orchestra fellow of both the Detroit and Pittsburgh symphonies. In 2022 Jones joined the Grant Park Festival Orchestra as principal percussionist. Jones has been featured at Carnegie Hall, on radio and television, and has had two short documentaries made about his musical development and experience. He also authored a percussion method book series, Spatial Studies for Hitting Things, and writes musical and philosophical blogs on his website, drummojo.com.

Jacob Cornejo Flute

Jacob Cornejo is an eighteen-year-old CMPI Fellow and flute player from Gage Park. In addition to his involvement with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, he has attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival for two summers and participated in a side-

by-side performance with conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the National Children’s Symphony of Venezuela. He has also performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival.

Simbryt Dortch Vocals

Simbryt Dortch’s experience in the entertainment industry has taken her to many places, including Star Search, the Apollo Theater in New York, and WGCI-FM Home Jam as a two-time winner in her hometown of Chicago. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Dortch earned a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in theater and vocal performance. In addition to her roles as singer and songwriter, Dortch has also acquired actress, model, jingle singer, voiceover artist, playwright, and instructor.

ATLYS String Quartet

ATLYS was formed from a dream to bust through classical stereotypes and create an atmosphere for people of all backgrounds. The four met in 2016 as

members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and it was through the numerous workshops with CSO’s then Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma that they grew determined and felt permission granted to take an unconventional path. The all-female group has created an atlas of cinematic music spanning a variety of genres, following in the footsteps of groups like the Turtle Island and Kronos string quartets by expanding the boundaries of sound with their traditional instruments and incorporating digital technology through looping and computer programming.

Jaden Teague-Núñez Steelpan

Jaden Teague-Núñez is a native of Panama City, Panama. He moved to the United States in 2011 and began studying steelpan and piano (classical and jazz).

He attends DeKalb High School, where he serves as the drummer for the Jazz Ensemble and Steelband and is a member of the Marching Band. Among his growing list of accomplishments, Jaden has been a guest steelpan soloist with the Humboldt State University Steelband and the Northern Illinois University Steelband. He has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and was also a guest artist at the 2023 Inside Out Steelband Festival in Austin, Texas.
