DEAR CSOA FRIENDS AND FAMILY, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s 2022/23 Season was full of memorable moments, including a dazzling array of musical offerings at Symphony Center, the CSO’s return to touring and a variety of festivities in honor of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti. In our second full season of concerts since the pandemic hiatus, I was touched by the loyalty of longtime audience members and thrilled to see many newcomers and young people enjoying the music of our beloved Orchestra and stellar guest artists. This report highlights the season’s many accomplishments, which were made possible through the commitment of the entire CSOA family. First, I would like to thank Riccardo Muti for 13 years of extraordinary leadership and the musicians of the CSO for always inspiring us with their beautiful artistry. I also gratefully recognize the Trustees for their tireless work on behalf of the organization, as well as the dedicated members of the CSOA’s affiliate groups, including the Governing Members, Women’s Board, League, Overture Council, Negaunee Music Institute Board, African American Network, Latino Alliance and Student Ambassadors. In addition to the many stewardship and cultivation activities led by our volunteers, the Women’s Board hosted another successful Symphony Ball gala, and the League exceeded its fundraising goal with a special event at a Symphony Center Presents concert featuring Pink Martini. Twenty-two new commitments were made toward SEMPRE ALWAYS: The Campaign for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra this season. As you will read on p. 52, these contributions will ensure the CSO’s continued artistic excellence and impact on our community while addressing systemic fiscal challenges. I thank all the supporters of the campaign for their tremendous generosity, as well as the thousands of individual donors, foundations and corporate sponsors that sustain the CSOA’s artistic, educational and community engagement programs through annual giving. In fall 2022, the CSOA engaged Chicago Regional Organizing for Antiracism to conduct five virtual and one onsite full-day Introduction to Systemic Racism interactive workshops for administrative employees and front-ofhouse staff. This is one example of ongoing efforts to advance diversity, equity and inclusion across five areas of the organization: musicians and artists, audience development, staff and management, Trustee recruitment and retention, and the Negaunee Music Institute at the CSO. Throughout this report, you will read about many related initiatives, including the new CSO Fellowship Program. Looking back on my second season as chair of the Board of Trustees, I am grateful to CSOA President Jeff Alexander for his leadership and to the staff members for their excellent work. I would also like to thank the vice chairs of the Board of Trustees — Chester Gougis, Steven Shebik and Helen Zell — for their wisdom and collaboration. On behalf of the entire Board, I extend a warm welcome to the six new Trustees who were elected this season: Johannes Burlin, John Holmes, Vikram Luthar, Dr. Toni-Marie Montgomery, Melissa Root and Ann Marie Wright. As you read this report, please remember that your generosity helped to make possible this season’s wonderful performances and transformational programs for young musicians, students, families and members of our community. Thank you for sharing your passion for music by supporting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

CHICAGO SY MP HON Y ORC HESTR A AS S OC IATION 20 22/23 ANNUAL RE PORT

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE CSOA, Throughout the 2022/23 Season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association celebrated Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti’s remarkable tenure with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. During his 13 seasons as the Orchestra’s 10th music director, Muti’s leadership was distinguished by the strength of his artistic partnership with the CSO, his dedication to performing great works of the past and present and his role as a cultural ambassador at home and on national and international tours. At the end of the season, CSOA Board Chair Mary Louise Gorno and I were pleased to announce Muti’s new title with us as Music Director Emeritus for Life, effective as of September 2023. In this role, he will continue to conduct the CSO at home and on tour and make invaluable contributions to Chicago’s vibrant cultural scene. With artistic leadership from Muti, more than 400 concerts and events were presented in 2022/23 by the CSOA, the parent organization of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, Negaunee Music Institute and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. As audiences continued to return to live performances at Symphony Center, attendees from 28,529 households purchased tickets for the first time, and we welcomed visitors from all 50 states. Attendance showed a marked increase beginning around the winter holidays, with the annual Merry, Merry, Chicago! concerts reaching nearly $1 million in ticket revenue. In addition, students purchased a record number of 22,359 tickets, thanks in large part to the efforts of the CSO Student Ambassadors and two successful College Nights. The CSO Latino Alliance, CSO African American Network and our various groups for donors and volunteers also enjoyed an active season of fulfilling musical experiences. During his first Chicago residency of the season, Muti conducted the U.S. premiere of the recently rediscovered Solemn Prelude by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, a British composer of African descent whose music appeared on several early CSO programs led by founding music director Theodore Thomas. Muti’s fall concerts also included music by Mussorgsky, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, with Yefim Bronfman appearing as soloist in piano concertos by Brahms and Mozart. In January, Muti and the Orchestra embarked on their first national and international tour together since 2020, traveling to Arizona, California, Oklahoma and Iowa before giving two performances in Toronto. A month later, they performed additional concerts in Kansas City, Missouri, and Orlando, Sarasota and Naples, Florida. Returning to Chicago in February, Muti conducted Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony and Schumann’s Violin Concerto featuring soloist Julia Fischer. His spring programs included the world premiere of Mead Composerin-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Transfigure to Grace, concerto appearances by three CSO principal musicians and three performances of Beethoven’s monumental Missa solemnis. As part of his ongoing commitment to increasing access to music and training young musicians, Muti led an open rehearsal with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and three free CSO open rehearsals for seniors, veterans and community groups. On June 27, the free Concert for Chicago at Millennium Park marked Muti’s final performance as music director — a fitting bookend to his tenure, which began at the same venue in September 2010.

Other highlights of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s season included collaborating with The Joffrey Ballet to premiere two newly commissioned choreographies by Cathy Marston and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Appearing in six programs this season, the Chicago Symphony Chorus performed repertoire spanning more than three centuries, from Vivaldi’s Gloria to Carl Orff’s Carmina burana. In addition, Marin Alsop led a memorable program of works by women composers, including Jessie Montgomery’s Rounds, commissioned for and performed by pianist Awadagin Pratt; former Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour, and Pulitzer Prizewinning composer Julia Wolfe’s Her Story, a CSO co-commission inspired by the women’s suffrage movement. The Orchestra also gave the U.S. premieres of co-commissions by Jimmy López Bellido and Lera Auerbach, as well as performed numerous works by other contemporary composers. CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn and Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery continued in their respective roles for a second season, not only bringing their formidable talents to the stage but also mentoring young musicians and sharing music with members of the community. Hahn performed as soloist in two CSO Classical programs and a Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music recital, hosted families with infants at one of her signature Bring Your Own Baby concerts, coached young musicians at the People’s Music School and worked with visual-arts students at the Chicago High School for the Arts. Montgomery curated the 25th season of CSO MusicNOW, composed two commissioned works and coached five teens through the inaugural Young Composers Initiative. This season marked the final year of Colombian-born conductor Lina González-Granados’ tenure as the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a role in which she was mentored by Muti, made her CSO podium debut and contributed to the Negaunee Music Institute’s educational programs. Venezuelan violinist Gabriela Lara, the inaugural CSO Fellow, regularly performed with the Orchestra and took private lessons with CSO musicians. The CSO Fellowship program welcomes to our stage musicians from populations that have traditionally been underrepresented in American symphony orchestras. We are pleased that Lara will return for a second season in 2023/24, along with new fellows Jesús Linárez and Olivia Reyes. The Negaunee Music Institute, the CSOA’s educational department, presented another season of robust programs that reached beyond Symphony Center to connect with communities across Chicago and beyond. Through the CSO for Kids series, audience members from ages 3 and up enjoyed engaging, family-friendly performances of orchestral music. Our training programs such as the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Chicago Youth in Music Festival, Percussion Scholarship Program, Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and the new Young Composers Initiative continued to provide opportunities for young musicians to be coached by CSO musicians and other leading artists. Community engagement initiatives included Notes for Peace songwriting workshops, open rehearsals for school groups and educational activities presented at several stops on the CSO’s North American tour.

The Symphony Center Presents series — first established as Allied Arts in 1930 and renamed in 1997 to coincide with the opening of Symphony Center — continued to bring the world’s finest musical artists to Orchestra Hall. The SCP Jazz series featured a co-commission by the great Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés; a concert honoring the legendary Dave Brubeck; the Maria Schneider Orchestra, returning to our stage for the first time since 2002; Chicago favorite Panamanian pianist and composer Danilo Pérez, and our annual two-concert residency with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The SCP Chamber Music series included an all-Beethoven violin and piano recital by Midori and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and an exciting duo of violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Daniil Trifonov. Eight pianists gave solo recitals, from longtime favorites such as Emanuel Ax and Evgeny Kissin to Seong-Jin Cho and Víkingur Ólafsson in their SCP Piano series debuts. In addition, we welcomed back to our stage the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of its chief conductor, Kirill Petrenko, followed by the Symphony Center debut of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with its new music director, Gustavo Gimeno. We were also proud to present legendary gospel singer and Chicago’s own Mavis Staples, Pink Martini with China Forbes, Kodo, Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion and a duo recital by soprano Renée Fleming and pianist Evgeny Kissin, presented in collaboration with Lyric Opera of Chicago. As we reflect on a season filled with enriching music and meaningful connections, we thank the Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Riccardo Muti, the Board of Trustees, administrative staff and generous donors, patrons and volunteers who make the programs of the CSOA possible. Your support helps to enrich, inspire and transform lives through music, here in Chicago and around the world.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, I am pleased to share our financial results for the year ended June 30, 2023. The 2022/23 Season celebrated the legacy of Riccardo Muti as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 10th music director and the 25th anniversary of the opening of Symphony Center. We were pleased to see so many patrons in attendance at concerts here in Chicago, as well as on tour across North America. Operating revenue improved from $21.3 million last year to $29.8 million in 2023, marking the highest level of earned revenue in the last five years. Almost 270,000 tickets were sold for 199 concerts at Symphony Center throughout the year, reflecting higher levels of activity following the pandemic. At the same time, contributed annual support from donors remains a critical component of the Association’s total revenue, totaling $21.8 million for the year. Along with the annual draw from our endowment, a draw from our other investment fund and net investment returns, total operating support for the year was $45.9 million. Operating expenses also increased year over year to $77.1 million with increased concert and community engagement activities, resulting in an operating deficit for the year ended June 30, 2023, of $1.4 million. Despite the operating loss for the year, our balance sheet remains strong, a result of continued generous giving to our SEMPRE ALWAYS campaign, as well as specific actions taken during the year to reduce liabilities. Contributions received and invested into the endowment and other investment funds during the year ended June 30, 2023, totaled $10.5 million. The balance of the Endowment, Other Investments and Beneficial Interests in Trusts now stands at more than $400 million, and net assets have increased to $343 million. The Association paid off $14.8 million in long-term debt during the year, including a $12.5 million optional early repayment of bonds. Over the last six fiscal years, the Association has reduced its debt balance by $26 million, or 18%. In addition, the Association made pension contributions during the year of $3.2 million, reliably funding the retirement obligations promised to our employees. The Association remains committed to reducing its longterm liabilities, with planned paydowns of debt and additional pension contributions in future years. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra remains a vibrant pillar of the arts community in Chicago and worldwide. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I extend my deepest gratitude to the CSO’s donors and patrons for your generosity and enthusiastic support, and to our employees for your dedication and inspiring work to transform lives through music, community engagement and education. I look forward to the 2023/24 Season and to seeing you at Symphony Center in the coming year.

Riccardo Muti & the CSO In his 13th and final season as 10th music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Riccardo Muti conducted nine weeks of CSO Classical concerts in Chicago, led the Orchestra on tour across North America (see p. 33) and performed a free Concert for Chicago in Millennium Park. On September 27, the CSO and Muti performed their 500th concert together — a milestone in a partnership that has been defined by strong bonds with musicians and audiences, commitment to bringing music to communities beyond Orchestra Hall and investment in the next generation of musicians. During his 2022/23 Chicago residencies, Muti revisited staples of his repertoire with the Orchestra, including Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, a piece he conducted in his CSO debut at the Ravinia Festival in 1973. He also led the CSO’s first performances of Lalo Schifrin’s Tuba Concerto, featuring Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny, and William Kraft’s Timpani Concerto No. 1, featuring Principal Timpani David Herbert; the U.S. premiere of Samuel ColeridgeTaylor’s recently rediscovered Solemn Prelude, and the world premiere of Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s Transfigure to Grace. Capping the subscription season in June, Muti conducted the combined forces of the CSO, Chicago Symphony Chorus and soloists in Beethoven’s Missa solemnis.

Celebrating a Remarkable Tenure Throughout the season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association honored Riccardo Muti and his legacy with the CSO, including at the Symphony Ball gala and A Night for Celebration with the CSO African American Network and CSO Latino Alliance. During the Maestro’s Dinner, an annual donor event, the four CSOA Board chairs who served during Muti’s tenure gave him an original letter written in 1893 from Giuseppe Verdi — a composer whom Muti has long revered and championed — to Maestro Edoardo Mascheroni, who conducted the premiere of Falstaff. During the season’s final week, CSOA President Jeff Alexander and Board Chair Mary Louise Gorno announced Muti’s appointment as Music Director Emeritus for Life and presented him with the inaugural Charles Norman Fay Award for Distinguished Leadership, named for one of the founding trustees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. At the Concert for Chicago, Alderman Bill Conway read a resolution, bestowed by the City Council and Mayor Brandon Johnson, recognizing Muti’s contributions to arts, education and culture in Chicago and around the world.

“ Maestro Muti understands the power of his voice and uses it courageously.” Miles Maner, CSO Contrabassoon and Bassoon

“ Maestro Muti is a world-class leader of the arts. His message is clear and, honestly, I feel a responsibility to uphold his ideals and somehow continue his legacy.” Esteban Batallán, CSO Principal Trumpet

On June 27, Riccardo Muti led the CSO in his final concert as music director at the same venue where he began his tenure — Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Presented in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, the free Concert for Chicago featured Florence Price’s Andante moderato and Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, which were enjoyed by a crowd of eager listeners in the park.

“ There’s no mistaking Maestro Muti’s delight and satisfaction when engaging with the public at Millennium Park or community concerts throughout the region.” Daniel Gingrich, CSO Associate Principal Horn

CSO for Kids In this season’s CSO for Kids concerts, members of the CSO collaborated with guest artists from Chicago Children’s Theatre, indie rocker Justin Roberts, vocalist Meagan McNeal, Chicago TikTok historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas and multi-disciplinary storyteller Felix Mayes. Guest conductors Andrew Grams, Tania Miller, Vinay Parameswaran and Scott Speck led programs about the history of symphonic music, helping others, pursuing one’s dreams, exploring the city’s neighborhoods and more. Through the CSO-Connect arts-integration program, the Negaunee Music Institute partnered with 14 Chicago Public Schools during the 2022/23 school year. Participating teachers designed curriculum inspired by orchestral repertoire, and students enjoyed in-school performances by fellows from the Civic Orchestra, a field trip to a CSO for Kids concert and an opportunity to share their original musical compositions. In addition, the Negaunee Music Institute continued to offer free, online resources for teachers and students, including videos, playlists, worksheets and lesson plans.

Community Engagement This season, 15 new songs were composed through the Notes for Peace program, which empowers parents who have lost children to gun violence to create original songs of tribute. From the project’s founding in 2018 through the end of the 2022/23 Season, nearly 100 songs have been written and recorded with leadership from the Civic Fellows and artists from the Irene Taylor Trust. Recordings, lyrics and photos are available at notesforpeace.org. During the CSO at Wheaton series, guest conductors Manfred Honeck and Bernard Labadie met with music students and faculty from Wheaton College to discuss their concert programs and respond to questions. With support from the Negaunee Music Institute, CSO musicians performed in schools and led master classes with local students in several cities on the Orchestra’s North American tour, in addition to performing free concerts and open rehearsals in Chicago (see p. 32). In Toronto, Riccardo Muti conducted an open rehearsal with the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School Orchestra.

SEMPRE ALWAYS The Campaign for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

SEMPRE ALWAYS is a $175 million fundraising effort to provide the secure footing needed to promote the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s preeminent role as a cultural icon showcasing musical brilliance, leadership and innovation. Campaign commitments support achieving financial sustainability, sustaining musical excellence, expanding education and community engagement and strengthening Chicago’s cultural fabric. The 2022/23 Season brought 22 new commitments totaling $8.9 million — each gift unique in size, timeline, structure and purpose. With these commitments, the campaign has raised $113 million, or 65% toward its goal, as of June 30. These gifts will allow the CSO to achieve goals of a long-term strategic plan that focuses on enhancing the Orchestra’s world-class status, while boldly and openly addressing systemic fiscal challenges. The CSOA gratefully acknowledges the generous donors who have shown tremendous support for this strategic initiative during the 2022/23 Season. Bequests A vital element of the SEMPRE ALWAYS campaign is planned giving, particularly bequests made through an estate, will or trust. As of June 30, 25% of gifts to the campaign have utilized planned giving as an avenue to increase the value of the overall gift. Other legacy vehicles include a beneficiary designation from a retirement plan, donor advised fund or life insurance policy, and arrangements established through an annuity. These planning tools help ensure that the CSOA can continue to share the transformative power of music with future generations. During the 2022/23 Season, the CSOA received $4.6 million in gifts from estates of CSOA family members, many of whom were active in the Theodore Thomas Society.
