RrcHARD \V. BonDINGnousE, instructor in real estate law at the ChicagoKent College of La~r, was born in Germany about 1837. His father was a prominent Iron Manufacturer operating a large factory, and the son \Yas educated as are the sons of persons of ·wealth and position in Germany.

As a youth of 19, he came to this country \O\;ith a party of friends to -visit the Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia in 1876, and \vith the spirit of adventure of that age joined ~rith son1e of the party in an extended trip through this country including a hunting and camping trip ~rhich lasted two years and extended along the Rockies into Mexico. After this he returned to Germany and as was required of every young man in that country, entered the arn1y as an under-officer. The iron discipline of this position not being in accordance with the spirit of free action, ,,·hich perhaps had been fostered by his sojourn in America, he left Gern1any, returning to An1erica by \vay of Holland. As this necessitated breaking ~·ith his family, he \Vas forced to shift for hin1self and \Vas thrown upon his own resources in a strange land. After traveling oYer a great part of the country he finally reached Chicago in 1886 and entered the en1ploy of The Title Guarantee and Trust Company as a copyist and in that capacity his work was so exceedingly accurate that the corrections \\·ere aln1ost unimportant and this accuracy together \Yith t11e beautiful appearances of his hand\vritino•opened to him the position of policy writer; all policies in those days being en~ grossed by hand. In April 1893. he comn1enced his \\·ork o"'f examiner of titles and about this time he comn1enced the study of law, entered ChicacroKent c;ollege o~ La'v and graduated in 1896 \\·ith a degree of bachelor of la~Ys · ~nd. ben~g the .\'~inner o.f the Callaghan Prize for that year. He progressed stead11~ 1n his position until h~ was made chief examiner of titles of The Chicago Title and Trust Company 111 1909 and Secretary of the Co111pany in 1912. History of Chicago Kent College of Law We may safely say that the foundation of Chicago Kent College of La\v dates from 1886 \vhen about a dozen law clerks gathered in the office of th~ firm of Burke & Hollett, then located opposite the City Hall. These young men had as their object more extended study of law. Judge Thomas A. Moran was suggested as a director and instructor of the class, but declined because he felt that his duties were too pressing to undertake it at that time. Judge Bailey, Justice of the Appellate Court of the First District of Illinois, was finally selected and accepted the position. The success of the class soon became eYident and other students can1e in in rapidly increasing numbers. More instructors ,,~ere added and in 1888 the original quarters of the Chicago College of La\v were established in the old Methodist Church block at vVashington and Clark Streets.

In 1~89 the College became the law department of Lake Forest University and continued as such until 1904. In that year the University had dissolved and the school resumed its. original organization as a separate college for the study of law. It was the first law school in Illinois to require a three-year course for the degree of bachelor of lav.: s. In 1892 the classes beca1ne so large that the school moved to the Athenceum Building on Van Buren Street and remained there until 1912, 路w hen it took up the present quarters in the Lake \ Tie\Y Building. . In 1900 .Kent College of Law, ~路hich had been founded in 1892, "\Vas joined with the Chicago College of Law and the institution fron1 that time became kn?wn as the C~icago Kent College of Law. In the thirty-four years of its existence about s1::c .tho~sand. n1en have graduated f ron1 its classes. T\Yenty-six hundred ar~ pract:cing in Chicago and Yicinity and the rest are spread throughout the entire United States. The quality of the instruction has follo\Yed the ~rowth of th.e school and the distinction \Yhich hundreds of its graduates bear is t~e ~est evidence of the profound success that the school has had from its yerv beg1nn1ng. ~

It was only three years ago when. we assembled at this grand old institution for the purpose of building a foundation upon which \Ve could erect our monum~nts 1nore enduring than brass and loftier than the regal structure of the pyranuds.

Then as Freshmen \Ye were con1pelled to suffer the 1nultiplex ordeals imposed upon us. and that \\·as the year that determination and a fighting spirit were incukated in our n1inds; and our only ray of hope was the thought that when we beca111e Juniors \\·e ·would get revenge upon the Freshman class; we did, for the then Freshmen can look back on those days in any other way than a sweet remen1brance of the past.

In our Junior year we began to realize the sacredness of our mission and to turn our attention to n1ore enlightening pursuits-participating in every phase of college activity.

Among us we have Yarious types of hun1an beings; though having our peculiar characteristics we have the same ain1s in view, looking upward to the highest ideals and attaining that which is good. \Ve look back upon the first three years of our college Ii f e \\rith exceeding great pleasure, for in practically all conflicts~ \vhether in class room, on the athletic field, or with the progressiveness of our trivial love affairs, victory has cro\vned our endeavors.

The third year was the dawn of a new era. We plunged into our daily tasks \Vith an inspiration to seek the best that has been thought and known in the world and make it current everywhere.

X ow that \\re are on the verge of having the honor bestowed upon us of being Alumni of Chicago-Kent, v;e have awakened to the realization that we live on an island of fact surrounded by an ocean of the unknown.

Thus while we of the 1920 Class are not unmindful that ours has been an abundant measure of achievement, we cannot make of this an occasion for boastful self-inflation. But with the days of struggling over, with the period of weary competition for recognition at an end, \vi th the incessant call to work now issued by us instead of to us, there comes peculiar relief. from the privilege after having done all, to stand.

The histories of future classes should be replete \vith achievements greater than anything of which the past can boast. The glory of what is to be must ever shine brighter than that which was.

In conclusion let us say that, whatever heights in life we may attain, we, with all of our rewards, are indebted to our Aln1a Mater for every achievement; and we \vish to leave on the nlinds of the under classn1en that:

Class History Xight had no terrors for the Class of 1l)20.

One Septe1nLer night in 1Ql /, so long ago that 1nost of us have forgotten it, the halls of Chicago-Kent College of La\Y "-ere filled ·with a bustling and jostling crO\Yd of young nlen and \\'On1en. eager to once again enter the toils of education, in order that they n1ight attain the goal for \Yhich they had resoh·ed to strive.

Confusion reigned supre111e. but \Yith the passing of a fev{ nights, order was established. and the class settled clo\Yn to explore the hidden mysteries of law, under the able guidance of .0.Iessr~. Pringle. X orthup. l\Iessing and \ Velch. Owing to the \Yar. \Yhich \Yas in full swing. not only ·w as the class very sn1all, but our ranks were threatened with further depletion, as n1any vYere expecting to be called to the colors. \Vi th the passing of a f e\Y \Yee ks, the political questions of class organization arose. and \Yere finally detennined at the first class meeting, held October 7, 1917.

After a hotly contested election~ and 111uch exciten1ent. the f ollo\ving officers \\~ere elected: C. 0. Thon1pson. Pre~ident, Charles F. Burke, \""ice-President, 1Iax Rappaport, Treasurer, Homer R. Hopps, Secretary, \ \r. H. Herbert. Jr., Sergeant-at-Arms.

For the ren1ainder of the year, the class spirit \Yas displayed by various social e\·ents. l\Iessrs. John I~. l\Ionahan and John J. Powers captured the class honors.

September 11. 1918, found us Lack at our posts with rer..e\\·ed energy, to r:ote with regret the absence of the greater part of our class, most of \Yhom had donned the khaki or blue, and also to hear \\·ith sorrov.; of the death of Dean Burke, honored and revered by the students of l(ent.

It was during the first semester of the second year that \ve really felt the effects of the war. Fella\\· students \Yere dropping out daily. Due to the confused state of affairs, the class spirit \Yas gi\·en little opportunity to display itself.

In October, the class election was held, at \Vhich the f ollo\Ying \Ye re elected officers: 1

Roy Lind, President, Marie McCutcheon, \ rice··President, Joseph P. Powers, Treasurer, Bertha Aronson, Secretary, Frank C. Levitan, Sergeant-at-Arms.

11iss Aronson resigned the office of Secretary after t\\·o meetir:gs, and Barnett Stone was elected Secretary in her stead.

School was closed for several \Yeeks in the fall of 1918. on account of influenza, and as a result ·we had no n1id-winter holidays.

Vle greeted the signing of the annistice and cessation of hostilities joyfully, and closed the year 1919 rnore happily, V\·ith many of our number returned to our ranks.

Mr. George Kotin and Miss MarieMcCutcheoncarried off the class honors. .

Our third year started out very auspiciously, and \Ye \Vere constantly \velco1n1~1g back those who had fought for our country. Politics early engaged the attention of the class, and in "nicotine Lane" discussion ¥:a..xed furious. It culminated in the election of the f olloV\ring officers : John K. Monahan, President. \i\lalter P. Murphy, Vice-President.

Time P.assed uneventfully up to the Christmas holidays. Due to the actixities of our President and ~he Entertainment Committee, \Ve had the "stag" in January, the gre~test ever engineered by students of Kent, and later, on Iviarch ·6, 1920, the .Sen10: Pr?m, at the Red Room of the LaSalle Hotel. the most success£ ul affair of its kind ever given by Kent.

The class Banquet was a success£ ul a ff air held the third of Tu:-lc.

Early in March, the sch~ol, as \Yell as the entire Chicago Bar.~ \Yas saddened b~ the sudden death of our fnend and teachec 1'Ir. Boddinghouse. \Yhose brilliant mind and pleasant personality \Ye 1niss beyond measure.

men1bers of the Senior Class of Chicago-l(ent College of Law for the year 1920, being of imaginative n1ind and defective n1emory, do hereby make this our last will and testa111ent, automatically revoking and annulling all others by us heretofore made, together with those \\路hich 111ay hereafter be made by our spirits acting under the duress of the evil \vanderers over this gardenlike campus of ours.

1. \~Te desire, \vish, \vill, direct and command that we shall be buried in a decent and hu1nane manner in the hearts and inemories of those whon1 we leave behind, proportionally as we atten1pted to perform our various duties and live honestly through the continuity of inexorable vicissitudes of student life. We do not sanction slabs on our graves, or slan1s on our reputation.

2. \Ve give, bequeath and devise our immaculate and irreproachable reputations to the Juniors, who are deplorably in need of it, and because they will be our predestined successors, and because it is they who must skillfully carry the college upon their shoulders.

3. To the Junior Clas~. \\:ith whom \Ve are intimately associated in student activities and undertakings, and to those of the other classes who exercise wisdom and discretion, we give, bequeath and devise the dearest and most sacred of all our possessions, the right of way, the way fraught with glowing smiles, and the lights from eyes 路which could not be too often beheld.

4. To the Freshman Class we bequeath, give and devise our endowments of common sense and sense of humility, and all those admirable characteristics, a magnification of \vhich will be necessary to free them from the abysses of conceit, ignorance and most unwise and indiscreet conduct into which they have cast themselves.

5. To the Special Class \Ve give our old ties and shirts, together with the privileges of studying our desires and ambitions that they may finally come to see that there really is some purpose to life, and that they may decide to appropriate their few scattered accon1plishments toward the consummation of that purpose.

Junior Class History The very first week of school the class spirit bud began to bloom in the Junior Class. and on the last day of September a meeting was held for the purpose of organization and election of officers. l\1r. Hogan presided over the ineeting and. although it \Yas featured with keen interest from all present and was one continuous round of anin1ation, order prevailed throughout and the officers whose pictures break tht monotony of these somber pages were then and there dubbed ~en路ants and masters of the Class.

One of the pleasant things long to be remembered by Kent and those who kno\v the good old institution is the assorttnent of pep that President Irene McConnick has injected into the ] unior Class. \Vi th Miss McCormick at the helm and a whole cla~s full of eager cooperation, \\路e have been able to put over a number of brilliant social undertakings that \\'Ottld ordinarily seem formidable to juniors of our college as well as those of our most intrepid contemporaries. In all of our parties we have exceeded our own optimistic anticipations.

A.s ,,.e have proceeded from our starting point away last year when we \Vere freshmen, ''"e have undergone quite a change in our personnel. \Ve are always grieved to lose a member of our organization, but are delighted that we have been very fortunate in securing new n1en1bers of such quality as blends so harmoniously ,,路ith our proud family. \Ve are truly a big fraternity, and Sisters Davenport, 1-i ugh es. ~1lcConnick and 11IcCurdy are just as good fellows as ever cocked a gun. In our class 111onun1ent they will be the four cornerstones. \Ve! I, we have one n1ore hill to take and we also have our ideas for taking it. \~' e are going to stick together in in ass formation and n1arch upon our objective singing the lays of Blackstone and Lord Eldon to the strains of a jazz band. If we fee 1 there is a lack of harmony we'll cut out the jazz, but we believe that a few flowers. ho\vever \Vild, are refreshing and helpful to the pilgrim clin1bing the 1nountain of success and \:\;e are going to aim at a pleasant though vigorous finish.

The Postgraduate Class In 1889, Chicago-Kent added a post-graduate course to the regular school curriculum, \vhich led to a degree of LL.lVI. The course is open to graduates of the regular three-year course at l{ent and to outside students holding similar credits.

Cntil 1904. the post-graduate class \Vas conducted by Judge Moran, who \vas at that tin1e dean of the school. Follo\Ying his death, the v.Tork was undertaken by Tudge Edmund \ Y. Burke, \vho also filled the position of dean of the school t;ntil his death in Septen1ber of 1918. During the present school year the work has been under the direction of Dean \\T ebster H. Burke, Charles H. Jackson and \Yalter A. Smith.

The course includes the actual drawing of pleadings, trial work, advanced eYidence. and chancery practice.

An opportunity is also given, \Vithout extra charge, to the student to avail hin1self of any other course of lectures given in the under-graduate department.

This department of the school has ah~:ays had a good attendance and has been of particularly valuable assistance to those students _of the la\v ''Tho have n?t had the opportunity of engaging in the actual practice of the law after their graduation f ram the regular school course.

So. in the Fall of 1019. there assen1bled in the library of the Chicago-Kent College of La\Y, a group of n1en who, like the "fev.:'', ,,·ere not content with what had satisfied the mass, but v.·ho, fired with the detennination to take unto themselYes all that the school could give, responded to the annual announcement of the foundation of the Post-graduate class, and gathered at the appointed time, ior the organization and launching of the \York.

The original enrollment \Yas large, and for the first f e\Y sessions considerable ti111e \Yas absorbed in calling the roll. As it became evident, ho\vever, that the last \Yord in the preceding paragraph "·as to be a yery necessary element to the con1pletion oi the course,-a condition precedent, to express it legally-the time consumed by the roll-call shortened, V.'eek by v.reek, so that by the time-proven principle of the survival of the fittest, we now approach graduation, culled of the spineless, the vacillating, the \veak and the indolent. All who enrolled in the class, were 111en already en1barked in business; and in justice \Ve n1ust say that many of those vYho failed to stand the grind were forced to \vithdra\Y because their bu!:-iness obligations were such that they found it i1npossible to deYote to the course, the time and the study required. To these we extend our syn1pathy, and the hope that another year may find business less pressing and the impulse still there.

The course of instruction we found divided itself into three channels : a course of advanced pleading and practice, with special en1phasis placed on the \Vorking out of the various questions involved, from the practical viewpoint of a lawyer; a course in real property law and practice, showing the actual application of the theory learned in the preceding three years; and, concurrently with these. a course of original research along special, chosen lines .

The first course mentioned, \\·as ably presented and handled by Professor Jack son. who ca111e to us e\·ery e\·ening fresh f ron1 a busy la V\T ?ffice, ~till radiating the spirit of lea-al battles that day \Von or lost, or overflowing v..r1th carefully \Vorked out offi~e questions, disposed of in the day's routine. The work was as interesting as .it was instructi ve,- and it v.ras highly instructive.

As originally planned, the real estate work was to have been conducted by the late Professor Boddinghouse, recognized by all as the best informed real estate authority in the city. His sudden and unexpected death left a gap in the c~urse whic? ~e thought could never be entirely filled; perhaps it cannot. But without hesitation, we say that if there is any one man in the city who can fill that gap, he has been found in Professor Smith, his successor on the faculty.

Pro~essor Bod~inghouse enjoyed a place in the heart of the student body, seldom attained by an instructor; but his loss, strictly as an instructor, has been greatly tempered by our find.

The original research work has been, perhaps, the most interesting f ea tu re of the year. Its purpose has been to lead us, each in his chosen field, to the very founts of. the theory of our laws, and he~p us trace their .develop~11ent, through the changing a~es, down. to the present highly balanced, nicely ad1usted system, then t? exhau~tively ~onsider. the modern application of those principles so traced, an~ discover, i~ possible, their future tendency. For this " "ork, Dean Burke vYas eminently qualified. H~ has made a thorough study of the historical origin and develop~ent of the. vanous elem.en ts of oi:r jurisprudence, and is deeply interested .1n the sub] ect; and a~ interested instructor usually finds an interested class to .instruct._ We have derived much pleasure and a rich, broadening benefit from this branch of the work.

Our object in ta.ki.n~ and .completing this advanced course, has not been merely to change the initials which. shall follo\v our names, fron1 LLB. to LL~I. Through t~e earnest efforts of Paul Manning, our athletic association president, a_nd. the assistanc~ of the other officers and members of the school, an athletic association was organized on December 12th, 1919, at which time the first meeting was held and the officers elected.

The heavies, after being held to a score of 24 to 12, came from behind in the fourth quarter and scored five baskets. This, ho\":ever, \\'as not enough, and when the final \vhistle blew, \Ve found Frankfort on the long end of the score.

Our tean1s did not con1pete in as many games as our predecessors of the 1918 Basket Ball Team, but we can boast of a better record in the percentage column, which is, after all, the real test.

There has been considerable activity in Grant Park lately, \vhere the fellows have been practicing for the Base Ball Season. This fact is evidenced by the line that sometimes comes straggling into class late, with bats, balls and gloves in hand.

On behalf of the Light and Heavyweight Basket Ball Tea1ns and the Athletic ..i\.ssociation the writer extends his many thanks for the earnest support of the student body and instructors in the furtherance of the basket ball activities.

This definition is sufficiently accurate_. except that in its application its rules are extended to include all civilized nations recognized as such in the family nf nations.

The history of international law is a chapter in the history of the evolution c>f the people of tl~e earth fro111 a state of barbaris1n to civilization. It had its beginning in the da\\"11 of ciYilization. but its de' elopn1ent as \Ye kno\\· it. is li1nited to the past t\\·o or three hun<lred years. Hence in international differences, 路when diplon1acy has failed, and arbitration ref used, diplomatic relations n1ay be served, embargo resorted to, or reprisal n1ade, and as a last resort, war declared. Such is the recognized practice of nations, and down through all the centuries, war has been deen1ed legitin1ate as the final arbiter.

This has led many lavv writers and statesmen to hold that international law is r...ot la\v and has no legal sanction, since it en1mates f ron1 no sovereign power capable of enforcing its rules. This, upon a superficial or selfish view, would seem to be true, but it is not necessarily so, and is not true, except in the sense that the nations of earth are not yet sufficiently enlightened to recognize law's real sanction or, recognizing it, wilfully ref use to obey it and have not collectively provided coercive 111eans for its enforcement.

In its last analysis, all la\v, founded in principle, is derived from the same source, and has the same ultimate sanction. Its source is the sense of justice, equity and hurnanity abiding in the consciousness of n!an, responsive to the voice of God, demanding justice and huinanity, as the pnce of peace on earth and harmony and prosperity ainong the peoples. I ts power is irresistable and its penalty is the scouragc of strife and war, self-inflicted upon mankind. International la\\' en1bodies this thought and points the way to international peace, but has not achieved it, because the nations have not ceased to fear one another, and in their national capacity have harboured and nourished the doctrine that "Might makes righf' inherited from the savage; and have only yielded to the harn1onizing influence of justice and equity in international relations as the sentin1ent of hun1anity or necessity compelled it.

Herbert Spencer says in substance, that the entire moven1ent of sentient li fc is to\vard the perfection of being. This interpreted and applied to man means that the human race is impelled or inspired to achieve perfection of being through eternal progression and harn1onious _coope~ati?~, which po_stulates the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, 1nd1 vidua11y, nationally, and as races and tribes of 1nen.

This is the fundan1ental principle of international law and of all la\\'. The end sought is harmony, progression, and freedon1. It_ is sai~ in Holy \\7rit that God made 1nan upright, but he has sought out inany 1nvent1ons.

The doctrine "Might makes right" is one of his inventions t? ~nable .the strong among natior-s to work their will upon the weak, and war i~ it_s logical corollary. This doctrine, ho\\rever, is so repugnant to the sense oi ngh_t and justice and withal so dangerous to all, e:ccept the str_ong~st, that the doctnn~ of the balance of power ainong nations was invented, which 1s but a selfish expedien! to meet a fatal error and 1nust inevitably result in disaster and bloody \var, o t which the present world vvar is sequel;_ an? which has been fo:~~~ upon th~ world, by intrenched autocracy t? establ~sh rorever the rule that . l\l1ght n1akes right" and that there shall be no interna_tional I_aw, except at_ the v.nll of_ the cor:querer. The United States and the a.lhed nations are fight1ng for national ex~ istence and hun1an freedom; for the nght of self-government and the aut_ono.m) of the weaker nations, and the supremacy of international law, based upon JUShce,

This is aptly stated in the platfonn of the Hamilton Club of Chicago in the fallowing \Yards: "The present war is a challenge to liberty and hun1anity- a clearly de~ncd issue between 'govern111ent of the people, by the people, for the people,' and government by autocratic inilitary po\ver in1posed upon the people."

"It is an atte1npt by intrenched autocracy to extend its dominion even to the inclusion of the \\·hole earth, and resistance to that attempt by the free selfgoverned nations." ~i' * * ''If the altogether infan1ous invasion of Belgiu1n is permitted to be in any degree successful, no nation can enjoy any assurance of the national existence. The assurance of the autonomy of the smallest in the fan1ily of nations is demanded by eyery consideration of justice. Belgium 1nust be restored and con1pensated and such exploitations and \ randa1is1n must forever cease."

The above \vords are pathetic. lVlilitary autocracy n1ust be destroyed.

Solemn traty obligations must be obser\·ed. Inhtunan and detestable practices to\vard innocent civil populations n1ust cease; neYer again to return.

The levying of tribute upon conquered cities contrary to the dictates of human conscience and human decency and the enslavement~ of prisoner~ of \var and the inhabitants of conquered territory n1ust be rendered abhorent and forev-er prohibited. The deliberate inurder of v:01nen and children for no militarv advantage by the bombard111ent of unfortified cities and the unloo~ed. licensed passions of brutal n1en must no longer be tolerated. · 1

The a?option and practice of unrestrained n1ight as a goYernmental policy by any nation should be execrated by all civilized nations as a badge of national dishonor.

The Office Lawyer

By JonN GuMB, JR. A great deal has been spoken and wr.itten about the "Lawyer in Court" but strange to say con1paratively little about the "Office La·wyer." Presumably this is due to the fact that the opportunities of the lavvyer to distinguish himself are greater in the court rooin than elsewhere and while, of course, it is a very laudable ambition to achieve distinction before the Bar, yet distinction alone should I believe, be the sole obpective of the young lawyer, and it would seem to be necessary in order to achieve the greatest n1easure of success in the practice of the law that a good office practice be established for this branch of the practice when once firmly established n1ay usually be relied upon as affording a steady and profitable income.

There are, of course, many different classes of legal services ,Yhich con1e under this branch of the practice and I, therefore, V\·ish merely to adYert to a few only, by way of exan1ple, in order to sho\v the possibilities of deYeloping this branch of the practice.

Practically every man of ordinary intelligence not learned in the la\v ·w hen contemplating an invest111ent in real estate, for example, first has the title to the property which he intends to purchase examined by his attorney. Also in n1any cases he has not sufficient funds available at the time to pay the entire purchase price and therefore it is usually necessary for hin1 to give the seller a purchase n1oney inortgage to secure the balance of the purchase money. His la\\-yer is, therefore, obliged to draw up the necessary papers, see that they are properlv executed, and to attend to the recording of the mortgage, etc.

The drawing of wills also is a very interesting branch of the practice. It quite frequently happens that a short tin1e after the testator or testatrix, as the case rr:ay be, has exe~uted the V\ ill, and af te: the san1e has been duly attested according to law, desires to make another vYill and, of course. this affords an opportunity for dra·wing a V\rill several tin1es for the sa111e person.

Another class of desirable legal business is the inatter taking the necessary steps to incorporate business enterprises. 1~his consists of dra\vino- articles o-f incorporatio?, inaking application for charter to the Secretay of Stat~ etc. ~After the .corporation has come .into existance it is frequently necessary to furnish legal advice to the officers or directors of the co1npany as to the 111anner of conductinCT ~he corporate meetings. and as to n1a~ing of proper records of the corporate n1eet~ 1ngs, manne~ of and hn1e when. notices of regular or special meetings of stockholder.s or directors should ~e giyen, etc. In n1any cases it is possible to obtain a retainer fee as co1npensatton for per annun1 serYices.

In this con:i~ction it vvould. seen1 to be al?propriate to ref er briefly to the matte.r of exercising great care in the preparation of legal docu1nents, ref erring especially t? deeds of ~o.n_veyance, st~ch as mortgages . vvarranty deeds, trust deeds. etc., to av?id the poss1b11tty o~ sending a doct1111~nt out " ·hich is defective in any -yvay by 1 eason of typ~gr~ph1cal or stenograph1cal errors. Frequently an error in the names of the parties is made and everlooked and the instrun1ent is recorded.

For example, the instru111ent shovvs that Maria Smith is the grantor when the signature of the grantor is shown as Marie Smith. This error while apparently trivial 111akes the title of the grantee taking title under the conveyance at least technically defective and usually another instrument must be drawn and recorded to cure the defect, or so111e other method einployed to cure the defect. There拢ore, although the la,,路yer's stenographer may be con1petent yet like all other hu1nan beings a stenographer is no n1ore infallible than any one else and it would, the ref ore, seem to be the part of ,,:isdom to examine the finished docun1ent vvith great care to eliminate any stenographical or typog~aphical errors vvhich ~nig~t have been com1nitted. It has been \vell said that An ounce of prevention is \Yorth a pound of cure" and this happy phrase is certainly appropriate in the cases mentioned above. It would be rather difficult, if not embarrassing, to satisfactorily explain errors of this kind to a client, who probably would be inclined to the belief that the error was the result of incompetence upon the part of the la\vyer rather than an error on the part of his stenographer.

In conclusion I 路would say that it would seem to be to the best interests of every young la "路yer to take steps to develop his "office practice" as the opportunities in that field are practically unli1nited for an intelligent and competent young la,vyer.

Maintaining the Evening Law School At a recent convention held in this city the Association of J\merican La\V Schools made the reco111mendation that 1iight schools for la\v students should be abolished. 1~his is an insult to an institution \Vhich has such a pO\\' erful influence in inaking and 111oulding the legal profession of this country. It is an atte111pt to deprive hundreds of young n1en and won1en of an opportunity to equip then1selves to beco111e better citizens and fitted for a more useful life.

It is difficult to understand the attitude of this association \vhen \Ve look about us and see en1inent lawyers, n1en who have attained the highest honors that can be besto\\.·ed upon the1n in the legal profession representing the product of son1e e\·enin~ la\\.. school. 1'he training of a 1najority of the la,vyers of Chicago has been nunistered by these schools and many of them are successful practicioncrs at the Bar or j uclges upon the Bench.

The door of legal opportunity to secure an education n1ust not be !:>hut in the face of those ambitious to becon1e lawyers. The person who goes to an evc1~ ing law school goes \vith the intention of ]earring the principles of the la\\' and ho\\' they are applied. Ile goes v;ith tl~e expectation that when the three year~ ha\·c passed and he is admitted to the Bar that he \vill be judged by his re;1 ability tn act, \vhether he is capable of serving \~1el1 his client; and not \Yhether he attended an evening school or a day school.

In the cconon1ic field, the history of labor organizations, the n1edieval guilds, the indu ·trial revolution are of interest. Such studies in connection with social psychology rnight clarify so111e preyailing n1isconceptions of the problen1s of capital and labor. The la\\'yer \Yho cannot see the labor problen1 in the light of ocial facts. past and present, 1nay pro,·e a liability to the corporation whon1 he ~eeks to advise.

In dealing with cri111e, society has passed through four fairly ·well defined stages: rctributio11. repression, ref onnation and preyention. Originally the crin1inal law was practically one hundred per cent. of the whole, but as civilization advanced laws of regulation, encourage1nent and service took precedence until today. according to Professor Parsons "the criminal lavv ·w ould constitute considerably less than one per cent. of the total." At present, the main en1phasis is placed on the deterrent po'Arers of punislunent vYith considerable attention to refonn. 1\11 inquiry into the causes of crin1e and of methods of correction and prevention will prove interesting to the student of cri1ninal law.

Sin1ilar points of contact n1ight be pointed out in the study of the social facts of poverty, child-labor, in1n1igration and other subjects which co1ne within the purview of sociology.

In conclusion, to use a mathematical formula, sociology is to law what literature is to history. It represents the human side of law.

Sociology studies symptoms,-is preventive. The viewpoint of law is too of ten merely remedial.

Today we need a great school of prophylactic law as well as of medicine. Laws represent accummulated experience and should move with human progress but are usually far behind. To the student who has noted the prevailing lack of any dynamic conception of the law or any adequate understanding of it as an evolutionary force, or who sees social barbarism entrenched behind the courts, and constitutions thaJ: are inelastic and that try to confine the state to police functions, the study of sociology shoulq bring a desire and hope of better things. It should develop idealism and a sense of social responsibility in this the dawn of the general regeneration.

The \Yi fe, \Yho is a hon1e-111aker, and who \楼hi le 1naking the ho1ne loses the opportunity to earn an independent income, has the right to some sort of protection against the risk of her husband's death.

Children ha,-e a right to be reared properly, vvell brought up, and to be well educated. 1"'hese rights should be safeguarded as against the death or total disability of the husband and fa th er. In most cases there is no safeguard except Life Insurance.

The Life Insurance contract is a one-sided proposition. A con1pany n1arries a policy holder for better or for V.'orse. 路 The con1pany cannot apply for a divorce for any reason after the first or second year. A policy holder can apply for a di,路orce and get guaranteed alimony at any time after the third year.

Life Insurance is protection and should not be bought for pecuniary gain.

As a shelter for the helpless, it has no equal and few substitutes. The uncertainty of life and the certainty of death are problems that face every person.

Through no fault of the man, death often causes hin1 to def a ult in his obligations, insurance protection is a device by which such defaults. ma~ be avoided.

It capitalizes the future earning pov.rer of the head of the fa1n1ly; 1t creates an estate for him in advance, so that if he does not live his allotted time he has protected his f an1ily.

Life Insurance is said to be built upon the principle of duty. No man has the right to leaYe those who are dependent upon his love and care to the chances of life. The n1an who deserts his wife and child is in so1ne states jailed for non-support. Death puts a man out of the reach of human law; but it cannot relieve hin1 of the responsibility.

An insurance corr1pany shares son1ething of the secrets of a doctor's private office and something of the secrets of the priest's confessional. They know the joys ~nd the struggles and the sacrifices and the tragedies of .the avera~e household as a1111ost no other outsider can, and the longer they are 1n the business, the higher on the whole, beco1nes their appreciation of the worth of the ordinary average man.

12'' Equal 1' In this day of intricate interdependence of society, the Jack-of-all-Trades has become subservient to the will of the man with a specialty. It is a well recognized instinct of human nature that every man, some time or other, has had a vision. He might have had a desire to become an engineer, a traveling salesman, or learned in the arts. Whether this spark will smolder and die out, or burst into a great conflagration of glorious achievements, depends upon the aggressive campaign the individual carries on against the gigantic barriers that stand in his pathway-among which are pessimism and his big brother idleness.

It is natural for man to entertain the desire to be honored and respected by his fellow-men. It is immaterial to consider at this point the extent to which this desire exists in the individual. But ever since the day of antiquity, with its crude form of culture, this inner-consciousness to want to stand shoulder to shoulder with the man of achievements, has been either filed a\vay in the dark recesses of the soul, or else it has stood out as a beacon light to guide a weaker brother over the diversified paths of life. In the come and the go of the years, this undescribable desire to achieve, has remained one of the f undan1ental instincts of human nature, until it has become just as much an invariable constant as "Twelve Inches equal One Foot." _ The student's lamp burning on into the night is a pri1na facie indication of the existence of a vvill power that will mold a character and which in the last analysis is the stuff that makes for leadership. This stuff that makes for leadership i~ frequently the r~~ult of the sin1ple exercise of Con1mon Sense. Possibly ~here .1s no better definition of Common Sense than that by Professor Harding in which he says: "Common Sense is that sense without ·which all other sense is nonsense.''

U si!lg Common Sense as the n1easuring ro?, is the student's investtnent going t<? net him a .good r~turn? In other words, vvill the possession of the sheep-skin disclose any interesting character sketch? Is education going to help the student to .look out up~n the world and see something besides dollars and cents? Is it ~~ing to help him to be a brother to the weak? Has it taught him ho\v to 1nake :tnends and keep them-and what it means to be a friend himself? Can he look ~n honest man or a _PUre ~oman in the .eye? Can he be high minded and happy in the mean drudgeries of life? According to Mr. J\1elvin Ryder in his "Rambles Round ~he Camp:is," unless the student can answer such questions as these in the a.ffirmative, the ~ime spent in the lecture roon1 has been ·wasted, and the associations. form~d while at the Halls of Learnii:g \yere o~ly 1nockery and just pretenses at fnendsh1ps. But this is not all. It goes further and includes that magnetic personality, the possession of \vhich renders one capable of having that irresistible faculty of being loved in return. These all are the essence of education; which, when acquired through unselfish practice, blazes the 路way, surely and ultimately, to leadership.

"The test of potential leadership is the willingness to labor day and night \vhen necessity demands." If the student is willing to pay the price, he should not be criticized for having seen in the dim uncertainties of the future, the possibilities of leadership unfold before him like a sum1ner rose. But he should take very careful account to see that the fires of ambitious youth do not lead him into Napoleonic paths.

The day has passed vvhen man can be governed by the cold calculating process of statistics or a set of rules. Each man has a personality and a temperament that is a distinct identity, differing in so1ne respects to that of any of his fellowmen. Each separate case is a human problem, requiring the exercise of sympathy, brotherly love, and justice. The Anglo-Saxon rebels against the tyrannical regime, comn1on under the iron clad hand of a despot. The sooner the student learns and accepts as part of his category, that "passion and a disregard for the rights of others, has no place in the councils of a free people," he will have acquired the fundamental element of success拢 ul leadership. And the great responsibility of hastening the day of this nevv era of injecting fraternalis1n into every day life, has been peculiarly thurst upon the law student. It should then be the aim and the ambition of the law student to leaye credible foot prints on the sands of time.

Long before summer is even thought of along our Northern Atlantic Coast, and even before it proclaims itself along the magnificent Champs Elysee of Paris, there is fertile valley where it is to be found already resplendent in green of graceful elms and stately chestnuts, and orchards bursting forth \vith rene\ved vigor on all the countryside. In the days long past, the adventurous kniahts of England were not slow to appreciate the charms of sunny France and the G~ronne and among those who came in search of spoil, and glory was Richard Coeur d~ Lion. Thus while Paris. was little n1ore than a medieval fortress, knights, f ollo\ved by bands of 1nercenar~es, wandered. througho1:1t the c?untry pillaging the rich ~hurches and. mona~tenes, and stopping from time to time to build castles \Yhen 1t pleased their fancies to do so. Much legend has surrounded the life of Richard Coeur de. Lion. His active ca~eer, ~ghti?g the Sarrasins in the Holy Land, settling 9-uarrels ii; Englai;d, and seeking dive1~sion and a troublesome existence in France. is one of inte?se 1?terest and filled vnth ron1ance. \\Te hear of him burning out the eyes of his pn soners, th ro~ii:g his victims in to dark dungeons-" Oub lie ts". as they w~re called, ~nd terronzing the country for miles around. tion that there had been no slackers an1ong the townspeople or of the countryside. 1~he boys of La Garonne were far away from home in the scarred, shelltorn desert ·where the only land marks are the stumps of broken trees, and where nO\Y. the 1i\ ing are con1ing to mark the heroic struggles of the dead. We went on through the village, passing row after row of quaint brown stone dwellings, gaily cro\Yned \Yi th red-tiled roofs. and impressive, today, with the same Gothic " ·indO\\·s, and char111ing little gardens enclosed in the courtyards which were to be seen hundreds of years before. \Ve could not but remark this atmosphere of an age long past, and as an occasional Frenchman in awkward wooden shoes, bu111ped do\\'11 the narro\v winding cobbled street, the grilled balconies overhead aln1ost touching, \-Ve could hardly believe that th is was the France of today.

As \Ve approached \Ve could see a ditch or n1oat surrounding it, once filled \\·ith water, 111aking the old castle well nigh impregnable, but now dry. But how \Yere \Ye going to enter? Ah! that vvas easy now. \Vhere once a great drawbridge hung \Yhich clanked as it ·was lo-vvered to allow the visitors to enter, there no\v \\'as a short path leading to the lo-vv opening in the heavy \Valls. But even nO\\., as ·we looked at these old crumbling walls, moss grown, and worn avvay by erosion, \.Ye could picture to ourselves the Black Prince and his followers in full armor thundering across the dra\.vbridge after the hunt; and we could almost hear the chains rattle-the sound of hoof beats, the shouts of welcome as they entered. But even nO\\', the castle door was not unguarded. \rVho was this that stopped us at the gate? A little urchin clad in rags, but with humorous laughing eyes barred the .door\\·ay, _hand ou~stret~~1:~ with an_ air of set ,?etermi_nation.

The high vaulted rafters overhead, which had once kept out the rain and protected the occupants fron1. the rays of th~ sun, were gone now, but the great \Vatch tower in the center still stood, catching our eyes from the moment we entered. ·v..,r e passed through a lo~ _doorway at th~ right. It lead us into what 111ust have been the kitchen and dining room combined. The tren1endous stone chiinney, and vvide open fire place \Vere still to be seen. A~d so was the heavy spit, upon which the venison once stean1ed before the crackling log. _An.cl as we looked it seen1ed almost as though we could hear the troubadours, singing to a lyre in' divers strains of love and vvar. \Ve passe~ on. This I?ust be the chapel - I guess. \Ye had stumbled do\l\rn a circular stairway of whi~h the steps vv~re so worn a\vay as to form great hollovvs, and in some places. ga1.nng holes, making progress hazardous to say the least. In front of us was. a su?ple altar. The ~nl~ decoration being a small stone cross, \l\rorn smooth with time and weathering. 'fhe low step for the worshippers to kneel. upon, had, f ron1 l?ng use thro~gh the ages, become hollowed wh~re the knees h~d ru~bed upon it; a~d looking out through the iron barred windows on the nght, it seen1ed mor.e like a dungeon than a church to us. My, how times have changed! Perhaps this \l\7 as a g:orgeo~s chapel in the olden rlays, filled with treasures,. and of art! Now for a. httle atr, and once again we were out in the autumn sunlight- and before us the high vvatch tower.

Beside the chimney, hung a faded tapestry - a Gobe1in, perhaps, which at once dre\v the eyes of my companions. !t was a Iar(.Te handwoven affair, depicting a hunting scene. In the foreground a Seigneur riclin~ up to the killing, and about to drive off the dog~; and .be?ind a gre~t castle with high massive turrets and battle111ents. It was simple in its coi:ception, but unu . ual for jts harn1ony of colors V\'hich seemed to blend perfectly 1n soft blues ancl reds- a work indeed \vorthy of Charles I. . .e Brun. My American friend was a connoisseur and offered to buy it, Gut the old man excused himself with extreine politeness. "Here is something more interesting to n1e than that," said Moreau, pointing to a high cabinet, or "Armoire" as they are called, with high panelled doors. And \valking over, as he spoke, he swung open the doors, disclosing a collection of porcelain, arranged in order on the shelves. One by one he took down for our acltniring inspection these priceless antiques which were created long before An1erica ~' as even thought oi. Last of all, he drew out of a corner a small wood carving. "Here is what I really wanted to show you," he said. ""Years ago, when the old castle of the Black Prince was still son1ething of a fortress, my granclf a th er took this panel from the chapel door, fearing it might be stolen." "Four hundred years old, and as good as ever,., he continued. Representing Christ, crucified on the cross-if it had something of a medieval stiffness, and rigidity, it was a work of art such as one would find in a French artisan's shop in a day when workmen loved their work for its own sake. One of my An1erican friends in expressing his adn1iration, made son1e remark about its Yalue, Monsieur Moreau misundersto.od hin1, thinking it V\ias an offer to buy it.

His face grew red, and turning angrily on my friend, replied vehemently: "Certainly not." "The dealers in antiques who have heard about it, have offered me large sun1s for it many times. Beaucoup! Beaucoup! Not for a million." "But \Vh~t if I should offer you ten thousand francs?" The old man tugged his beard furiously. He waved his arms expressively in emphatic negation. "No, Monsieur, . not . for all the money in the world. \Vhy, it was here when I. was born ' its association~ m~an more t.o me than could be expressed in n1ere money.n During the revolution, 1t was buned out yonder by the well with the stained glass windoV\r in the alcove," and he pointed in the direction of the courtyard.

The old Monsieur ~1niled indulgently. "Have the fairies brought you anything today?" one of my co1npanions inquired. addressing the children. The little girl, who up to 1-ow had taken the initiatiYe, thrust her little fingers into her 1nouth to cover her c11)arrass111ent, her eyes cast shyly dovvn, shook her head slowly from side to side i·1 abashed negation. ''Ah! I hear them coming novv," n1y friend exclaimed.

After explaining with son1e difficulty the fact that \Ye must take our leave, we made our adieux, shaking Monsieur- ~Ioreau 's hand several times before our final departure. \Ale had nearly gained the gate. \Yhen a voice behind us \i\-as heard. It was Moreau. He stood '"-aYi:1g his hat in the door\i\tay, as his little girl came running out with a package u 1.dcr her arn1. This was strange. \Ve stopped. "A petit cadeau, f ron1 father/' said :\] adelaine, breathlessly, holding out the parting re1nembrance.
