® OF
TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES

In any walk of celebrity life, to be known only by your first name is a feat in itself. Godfrey is one of those remarkable people. A versatile actor, writer, host, and standup comic, Godfrey has made a name for himself for the range and depth in his work. With an ongoing successful career in standup comedy, he tours internationally and his hilarious one hour stand-up special, Regular Black, is currently available on Showtime.

Godfrey C. Danchimah, Jr. was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and grew up in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. His Nigerian parents influenced his unique comedic voice by showing him classic comedy films from an early age. While performing impressions of his college football teammates at University of Illinois, Godfrey realized his irreverent style of comedy might be more than just a hobby.

He started is his career in Chicago and has been based out of New York for the last 20 years and has gone on to land several high profile projects. Ben Stiller cast him to play himself in Zoolander, a performance that has since achieved cult status, Johnson Family Vacation, Phat Girlz starring Monique, and Soul Plane, alongside Snoop Dogg to name a few.

In television, he performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, had recurring roles on FX's Louie and HBO’s South Side, been featured on Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ’N Out, and wrote several episodes on HBO Max’s That Damn Michael Che. His most recent voice over work includes Netflix’s Big Mouths, Human Resources, Netflix’s reboot of Good Times, Comedy Central’s The President Show and the upcoming Ramy Youseff animated series for Amazon, #1 Happy Family USA.

Godfrey can be seen headlining some of the most prominent comedy clubs across country as well as internationally. He’s performed in Holland, Russia, South Africa and Saudi Arabia to name a few.

Godfrey is thrilled to be back in his hometown to host this year’s ceremony and is excited to celebrate the best of television and media in Chicago and the Midwest!

AWARDGoverns' CAROLE B. CARTWRIGHT

The Governors’ Award is among the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ highest tributes. It was created to honor individuals or organizations for outstanding service to the broadcasting community and to the work of the Television Academy.

Carole Cartwright has been on the Board of Governors of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter since 1997 and has served as the Board’s Education and Scholarship Chair for more than 25 years. She has also served as a founding member and President of the NATAS Chicago Foundation since its inception. This year, marks the 25th anniversary of this 501(c)(3) foundation – which, thus far, has distributed more than $650,000 to outstanding local high school and college students pursuing broadcast journalism and television production careers. Many of these NATAS scholars have gone on to awardwinning media careers, including: White House correspondent Peter Alexander, NBC Network News reporter Jesse Kirsch, WLS (Chicago) reporter Jessica D’Onofrio, WDJT (Milwaukee) Chief Meteorologist Drew Burgoyne, WTMJ (Miami) reporter Laura Rodriguez, and WISH (Indianapolis) news anchor Alexis Rogers.

In 2020, Carole was named Governor Emeritus for her decades of service to the Chicago/Midwest Chapter and, in 2008, was inducted into the Chapter’s Silver Circle. She has also recruited donors for funded scholarships and she, herself, funded a Silver Circle event scholarship for five years to honor her late husband, pioneering broadcast engineer Gene Cartwright, a 1998 Silver Circle inductee.

Carole’s outstanding contributions to Chicago broadcasting also include a stellar career at three Chicago stations. After years at NBC 5’s Community Affairs Department as an Emmy®-award-winning producer (children’s program Whys & Otherwise), executive producer (Bicentennial special: Listen to the Land), and program host [On Q], she moved to WTTW, where her work won a prestigious Peabody Award for the program series: As We See It. From WTTW, Carole joined KNBC as Director of Programming & Production, where she continued to win Emmy® Awards and an NAACP Image Award. She returned to Chicago as General Manager of WYCC-Channel 20 Educational Television.

Carole Cartwright’s 50+ years of ground-breaking public service to the Chicago broadcast community and her tireless efforts to pay it forward to future generations of broadcasters have earned her our profound respect, appreciation and the Chicago/Midwest Chapter’s 2023 GOVERNORS’ AWARD.

NATAS Chicago would not be the same without the hard work, creativity and dedication of Carole Cartwright, whom we honor tonight for her continued support and contributions to the Chapter and its members.
