DUCKWORTH, DURBIN ANNOUNCE OVER $11 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR FIREFIGHTER RESOURCES IN CHICAGOLAND U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) recently announced a total of $11,194,763.84 in federal funding to communities in the Chicagoland area through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The AFG program provides first-responder organizations access to much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training in an effort to create safer, more prepared communities.

“Firefighters risk their lives and run toward danger when others run away,” Duckworth said. “We owe it to them to make sure they have the best equipment and training, and I’m proud to join Senator Durbin in announcing this funding to help ensure our firefighters have the resources they need to keep their communities in the Chicagoland area safe.”

Since Fiscal Year 2001, the AFG program has provided approximately $7.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations. The program is administered by the DHS’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

As the new chairwoman of the Cook County Young Democrats and president of the Chicago Votes Action Fund Board of Directors, Chakena Sims has a vision for expanding access to voting rights in Chicago and engaging a new generation of political activists across Cook County. With a strong handshake and 26-years of life under her belt, Sims is ready to be an advocate and a leader as the 2020 election approaches.

“I was born and raised in Chicago and I was a Chicago Public School student from kindergarten to 12th grade. I got involved with politics at an early age before I actually had the language to really describe my involvement,” said Sims.

As a straight-A student, Sims said she was constantly placed into leadership roles at her school and was able to see inequity first hand at her own school and when she visited other schools for extracurricular activities.

“In my own school, both elementa-

ry and high school, I saw the lack of resources and the differences between some schools on the south side and the north side. When I had those leadership opportunities, I didn’t take for granted that I had the ears of the people who were in power to make changes and I was unapologetic about sharing with them the fact that we need resources,” said Sims.

In 2013, while in Chicago during her summer break from college, Sims took a job working as a community organizer for Chicago Votes.

It was during this time that Sims realized she had a passion for voter’s rights advocacy. During that summer, Sims went door to door across the city of Chicago working to get residents registered to vote and connecting them with resources and information that would help to engage them politically.

Sims said her goal as a community organizer for Chicago Votes has always been to leave folks with more resources than they had before she first knocked on their door.

Most recently, Sims took on a new role

as chairwoman of the Cook County Young Democrats which is an organization that was created to engage a younger generation of voters in the democratic process.

As Chairwoman, Sims said she and her board of directors have decided to start from scratch and find new ways of getting young people interested in politics.

There will be several events and fundraisers throughout the coming year and Sims is calling on anyone interested to get involved especially younger voters by creating their own local Cook County Young Democrats chapter.

“I think that as young people, we have an opportunity where we don’t have to take anything for face value anymore. The research shows that if we’re mobilized and organized enough, we can literally change the outcome of an election at all levels of government,” said Sims.

The Cook County Young Democrats will be hosting a Democratic Debate watch party and networking event at the Chicago Teachers Union, 1901 W. Carroll Ave., at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20.

Chronic kidney disease patients at increased risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, Mayo Clinic study finds Chronic kidney disease, which afflicts an estimated 6.4% of U.S. adults 45 and older, is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and other adverse cardiovascular outcomes, according to new research from Mayo Clinic.

The retrospective review of 1,981 patients who were treated for chronic kidney disease at Mayo Clinic between 1997 and 2000 found that over a 10.2-year follow-up period, these patients had significantly elevated cardiac biomarkers, and were at increased risk of heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke and other adverse cardiovascular events.

According to the study, which is published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the results regarding heart attack were especially striking: Chronic kidney disease was associated with a 95% increased risk of heart attack during the follow-up period.

“Our study highlights the strong association between chronic kidney disease and heart disease, with evidence that patients with kidney disease are at an increased risk for heart attacks, heart failure, stroke and even death,” says Shravya Vinnakota, M.B.B.S.,

While the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in the U.S. has stabilized in recent decades, the prognosis for patients remains poor. Cardiovascular disease long has been identified as the major cause of premature death for chronic kidney disease patients, but this was believed to be due in part to common risk factors, such as hypertension and diabetes. However, there’s growing evidence that impaired kidney

function alone is a risk factor.

The study analyzed data from the Olmsted County, Minn., Heart Function Study, a population-based random sample of 2,042 county residents 45 and older, and it used one of the longest follow-up periods in chronic kidney disease research.

The elevated biomarkers identified in the study — the hormone NT-proBNP, which is produced by the heart, and the protein called high-sensitivity troponin, which is found in heart muscle cells — may help identify chronic kidney disease

patients who are at high risk, according to the study. Both biomarkers can be measured through blood tests, and these blood tests would give doctors and patients more information to manage risk factors, such as weight, blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

“Chronic kidney disease is widely prevalent, and its association with cardiovascular diseases and mortality is well-documented, says Horng Chen, M.D., a Mayo Clinic cardiologist who specializes in heart failure.

“Despite this, there is a paucity of data that helps identify the patients with kidney disease who are at an increased cardiovascular risk. With this study, we have attempted to classify patients according to their kidney function, and analyze their cardiovascular outcomes and biomarker activation trends.”

Further studies, including clinical trials, are needed to confirm the prognostic value of the cardiac biomarkers and the effectiveness of risk modification strategies, says Dr. Chen, the study’s senior supervising author.

This research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Treasurer Frerichs Announces Third Gold Rating for Bright Start College Savings Plan Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs recently announced that Illinois’ 529 College Savings Plans, Bright Start and Bright Directions, again have earned top rankings from Morningstar, placing both plans among the best in the nation.

“Since I took office, I’ve made it a priority to create college savings programs that earn the trust of Illinois investors,” Frerichs said. “Saving for college is the best investment parents can make for their children’s future because it reduces the burden of long-term debt.”

A child is three times more likely to attend college if they have a dedicated college savings account, according to research from the Center of Social Development at Washington University.

Ensuring top quality 529 programs is one of several initiatives by Frerichs’ office to make college more accessible.

Morningstar, which independently evaluates and rates college savings plans, released the results selecting the Bright Start 529 College Savings Plan as a “Gold-Rated 529.” Since Frerichs revamped the plans in July 2017, Bright Start, a direct-sold plan, has won the Gold medal three years in a row. According to Morningstar, Bright Start is considered a “Valedictorian” among its peers and continues to be one of the highest-rated plans in the country because of its investment diversity and choice, low costs, and overall structure.

The Bright Directions Advisor-Guided 529 College Savings Plan also earned its fifth consecutive Silver medal – the highest honor bestowed on advisor-sold plans. Morningstar recognized Bright Directions for its low-cost, well-constructed age-based portfolios and exceptional selection of individual options.

Morningstar identified 30 plans expected to outperform peers on a risk-adjusted basis, assigning those plans Gold, Silver and Bronze Morningstar Analyst Ratings. The plans are evaluated based on five key pillars - Process, People, Parent, Price and Performance. This year, Bright Start and Bright Directions received positive ratings in the Process, People, Price and Parent Pillars. The Parent Pillar is an evaluation of the program manager and

investment manager and whether they are good caretakers of college savers’ capital. It also is an evaluation of the state administrator; in Illinois, that is the Illinois state treasurer, who also serves as the Trustee of the Programs.

Since 2015, Frerichs has worked with Union Bank & Trust, the program manager, to reduce fees and ensure more investment dollars go directly to college savings. These changes have helped the plans grow to more than 650,000 accounts with more than $12 billion in assets.

Money in a 529 college savings account can be used at eligible educational institutions,

including public and private, two-year, four-year colleges and universities and certain technical and vocational schools. The investment grows tax-free when spent on qualified expenses.

As Illinois State Treasurer, Frerichs is the state’s Chief Investment and Banking Officer and actively manages approximately $30 billion. The portfolio includes $13 billion in state funds, $11 billion in college savings plans and $6 billion on behalf of local and state governments. According to a press

release, the investment approach is cautious to ensure the preservation of capital and returns $42 to the state for every $1 spent in operations.

Frerichs’ office protects consumers by safeguarding more than $3 billion in unclaimed property, encouraging savings plans for college or trade school, increasing financial education among all ages, assisting people with disabilities save without losing government benefits, and removing barriers to a secure retirement. The Treasurer’s Office predates Illinois incorporation in 1818. Voters in 1848 chose to make it an elected office, according to a press release.

Cook County Public Health Awarded $4.7M in Opioid Grants This Year Four grants will help prevent overdose deaths and increase access to treatment Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has received $4.7 million in grant funding this year to prevent opioid overdose deaths and increase access to and use of evidence-based substance use treatment programs.

The latest grant, “Partnerships to Prevent Opioid Overdose Deaths” (P-POD) in the amount of $1.98 million from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) was awarded

to Cook County Health (CCH) in September on behalf of CCDPH, a CCH affiliate.

Training will be provided to suburban Cook County law enforcement and other community partners. In addition, through the establishment of regional taskforces and the deployment of outreach coordinators, P-POD will support deflection programs to route individuals with opioid use disorders to communitybased treatment providers.

To reduce overdose deaths and increase the number of people accessing and staying in evidence-based

outpatient treatment programs, CCDPH will work with Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities (TASC) and Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

CCDPH is also a sub-grantee on a grant awarded to the Chicago Department of Public Health by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC Opioid Data to Action Grant received in August in the amount of $900,000 per year for 3 years will enable CCDPH to hire three staff, expand opioid overdose surveillance, and www.citizennewspapergroup.com

implement law enforcement assisted diversion to treatment.

The agency also received a $152,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services to educate providers about the Prescription Monitoring Program, which tracks prescriptions of opioids to prevent over-prescribing, and raise public awareness about the benefits of naloxone and the Illinois Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances at www.helplineil.org. Using funding from this grant, in September CCDPH began airing the “Naloxone Saves Lives” commercial on CBS2

CCDPH also joined forces with the Cook County Bureau of Technology to develop an interactive, online Opioid Story Map that launched Aug. 31 in honor of Opioid Awareness Day. The Opioid Story Map shows where to get naloxone, as well as Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and safely dispose of prescription drugs; and provides numbers, rates and trends of opioid-involved deaths by drug type, location, gender, and race/ethnicity.

How to Turn a Simple Shed into a Livable Oasis StatePoint - Once the domain of lawnmowers and gardening tools, today’s backyard sheds are being repurposed into unique, functional spaces (think: she-shed, bunkhouse or even a bar pub) complete with plumbing and electricity.

Here are tips from the experts on how to turn a simple shed into a backyard oasis.

“Quite often, we are seeing that homeowners are adding electricity to backyard sheds and using

decorative interior lighting to make a statement, just as lighting would be used in the interiors of a home,” says Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications for Progress Lighting.

Backyard sheds are widely available at garden centers, hardware and home stores in a variety of architectural styles, from traditional to modern. Sheds range in size, from small (under 80 square feet), medium (approximately

90 to 120 square feet) and large (ranging from 144 to 288 square feet.) Choose a size appropriate for the use -- for example, a gardener’s getaway or she-shed may be on the smaller size. A bunkhouse or bar shed will need to be larger.

Decide whether this will be a DIY project from the ground up, or whether a prefabricated shed best meets your needs. Check with your local planning department to comply with codes and guidelines.

Decide if the shed will mirror the architectural features of your home.

Keep in mind that because sheds are not tall, the roof will be visible and should be considered as part of the design.

Choosing a 10 by 12-foot classic backyard shed with a gambrel roof, gable vents, transom windows and 7-foot walls to give top campers in the bunk beds more headroom, Freling Brown transformed a simple shed into a bright, nautical farmhouse-inspired bunkhouse, complete with electricity for an overhead light, two wall lanterns and electrical outlets.

The hand-painted wood grain texture of its overhead pendant inspired Freling Brown’s choice of reclaimed wood paneling for the

ceiling, creating an unexpected décor detail. She added vinyl plank flooring that would stand up to sandy, wet feet from the lake.

Beadboard paneled walls painted in a semi-gloss white make the most of the reflected light, adding to the small space’s open, airy feeling. As a contrast to the light palette of the bunkhouse interior, she used color in coordinating bedding, nautical decor and navy furniture, as well as accessories make it warm and inviting.

Foamix Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a specialty pharmaceutical company, recently announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved AMZEEQTM (minocycline) topical foam, 4%. AMZEEQ, formerly known as FMX101, which is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory lesions of non-nodular moderate to severe acne vulgaris in adults and pediatric patients 9 years of age and older.

According to a press release, it is the first topical minocycline to be approved by the FDA for any condition.

“The FDA approval of AMZEEQ is a milestone moment in dermatology and the most significant advancement with minocycline in almost 50 years,” said David Domzalski, chief executive officer of Foamix.

“We are proud that our proprietary technology platform has led to this new treatment option, which we believe can help address unmet treatment needs for moderate to severe acne patients. We are looking forward to bringing AMZEEQ to market in January 2020, and to our Company’s first commercial launch.”

Minocycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic known for its efficacy in treating moderate to severe acne, but its use is limited in some patients due to systemic side effects when taken orally. Until now, minocycline has not been available as a topical treatment due to its instability in traditional topical formulations.

In AMZEEQ, Foamix has leveraged its proprietary Molecule Stabilizing Technology (MST™) platform to effectively deliver minocycline in a foam-based vehicle, a press release further stated.

“Our innovative MST™ technology allowed us to develop a topical formulation of minocycline in a convenient, once-daily treatment regimen that maintains the stability of the active ingredient while delivering it into the skin,” said Iain Stuart, Ph.D, chief scientific officer of Foamix. “The approval of AMZEEQ represents a significant step toward our goal of enhancing the standard of care for the millions of acne sufferers in the U.S. who deserve alternatives in treatment.”

AMZEEQ is expected to be available for prescribing in January 2020.

Amtrak Prepares for Increased Thanksgiving Travel In anticipation of the busiest travel week of the year, Amtrak is preparing to accommodate the surge of holiday travelers with extra trains and capacity on several routes. Tickets sell out quickly, so customers are encouraged to plan ahead and book tickets early.

With the Thanksgiving travel season soon underway, Amtrak is prepared to operate every available passenger railcar in its fleet. Amtrak is adding extra trains for more seating on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and is adding extra cars to existing trains along the Midwest and West Coast routes.

“With more than 500 destinations nationwide, customers can witness some of the best sightseeing opportunities the United States has to offer while getting to their holiday destination of choice,” said Amtrak president and CEO Richard Anderson.

On the NEC, Amtrak Acela (Boston – Washington, D.C.) and Northeast Regional (Boston – Washington, D.C. – Richmond) trains will operate full and extended schedules with additional frequencies and added capacity during the Thanksgiving week. The Amtrak Keystone Service, Pennsylvanian and Empire Service trains will offer extended holiday capacity.

Additional NEC trains, including the Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian will require reservations beginning Nov. 25 through Dec. 2.

In the Midwest, Amtrak Wolverine Service,

Hiawatha, Pere Marquette, Illinois Zephyr, Lincoln Service, Saluki and Illini trains will all offer extra capacity to accommodate increased customers. Extra service will be operated by Amtrak to some Downstate Illinois cities.

Chicago and Hiawatha service will also require reservations between Nov. 26 and Dec. 2nd.

At Chicago Union Station, Sleeping Car and Business Class customers, as well as top-tier Amtrak Guest Rewards members, can experience the Metropolitan Lounge and pre-board their trains. Coach customers can purchase day passes to the lounge.

On the West Coast, additional capacity will be added to the Capitol Corridor (Auburn/Sacramento – Oakland – San Jose), San Joaquins (Oakland/Sacramento – Bakersfield) and Pacific Surfliner (San Diego – Los Angeles – San Luis Obispo) routes. During the holiday period, the Pacific Surfliner service will also require reservations between Nov. 27 and Dec. 2.

Being able to easily travel from/to city centers, Amtrak offers the freedom to use phones and electronic devices (no “airplane mode”), the ability to travel with small pets on many trains, large spacious seats with ample leg room, no middle seat, and one of the

most generous baggage policies in the travel industry, applicable for two personal items and two carry-on bags, according to a press release.

Amtrak also offers up to 45% off when six passengers travel together as part of its Share Fares deal so customers can Get Carried Away on Amtrak.

Last year, Amtrak had its largest passenger count to date during the Thanksgiving week with over 846,000 riders on its trains across the country. Amtrak carried over 160,000 customers the Sunday following Thanksgiving last year.

A Matter of Life And Death

All oppressed people know this feeling. Tevye expressed it best in “Fiddler on the Roof ” when he said there are times “when our hearts lie panting on the floor.”

Atatiana Jefferson’s murder by Aaron Dean, a white police officer, in Fort Worth, Texas, on Oct. 11 has created one of those times. It is clear from the cries of outrage that many Americans, particularly people of color, feel this way. After watching video footage of the shooting from Dean’s body camera, there is no doubt that this was murder.

Initial media reports stated that roughly four seconds passed between the time Dean shouted “Put your hands up” at Ms. Jefferson as she stood by the window in her own home and the moment when he fired the fatal shot. However, video cam timers show that less than two seconds elapsed. One video time tracker showed that Dean shouted his command at time-lapse 0:32 and pulled the trigger at 0:33. That was little more than one second. We can only assume that the media obtained the four second time frame from the Fort Worth Police Department.

The Fort Worth police also quickly released information that Ms. Jefferson had a gun in the house.

the narrative in favor of Dean, even though Texas is an open-carry state where countless law-abiding citizens have guns in their homes.

As shocking as this murder was, what made it worse was the way the Fort Worth police initially recited the facts in a way that favored the murderer.

It is obvious that Dean shot and killed Ms. Jefferson before giving her a chance to respond to his shouts and without identifying himself as a police officer. And it is not disputed that Ms. Jefferson had every right to protect herself and her home from an unidentified and suspicious person outside.

Because this was a PR battle the Fort Worth police could not win, the chief has taken the position that Ms. Jefferson was within her rights, and Dean has been charged with murder.

This case, however, is an “outlier” even though there is no certainty that Dean will be convicted and punished for his crime.

It is impossible to have faith in the ability of law enforcement at any level to mete out justice fairly when we are constantly bombarded with news of police misconduct.

When we learn of innocent citizens being gunned down in their homes by police officers in Texas, or of a Virginia law enforcement officer who was also a recruiter for a white nationalist group, or that a Pennsylvania policeman arrested two Black men and charged them with loitering in their own front yard, there is no rationalizing this behavior.

Constantly faced with these types of events, we must acknowledge that there is still something very wrong with this country.

While white people worry about being killed by home-grown terrorists, people of color must also worry about being killed by the police.

People of color are being gunned down in the streets and in their homes by law enforcement officers who do not value our lives. And this will continue until we address the root cause of this problem.

vet them before they are hired or properly supervise them once they are on the job. We have incompetent police chiefs because too many politicians who hire them do not care enough to ensure that they carry out their jobs properly.

The way to be rid of these killer cops is to remove incompetent and uncaring chiefs. And the way to be rid of those chiefs is by removing from office the politicians who hire and support them.

People of color will never be able to live a life in America free from fear of being killed indiscriminately by police until we find people committed to making us safe, support their political campaigns, vote them into office and support them while they are in office. By doing this, we maximize our ability to vote out of office those people whose policies and decisions result in killer cops murdering us.

We must drive out of office those policymakers whose indifference to the continued murder of people of color results in more of those murders time and again.

It is a step in the right direction that Dean has been charged with murder. However, that does not restore life to Atatiana Jefferson.

Dean should never have been given a badge and a gun, and the police officials who hired him must be held

accountable. We cannot make public officials answer for their egregious behavior and poor decisions until we register and vote for the type of politicians who see us as human beings deserving of their respect and who have concern for our welfare.

Putting the right people in office will not be easy. The forces of white supremacy are hard at work to make it more difficult for people of color to participate in free and fair elections.

Roadblocks to the ballot box have been thrown up in front of people of color in every state of the former Confederacy and in some states that fought for the Union. But we cannot let these obstacles stop us.

We must vote and see to it that our friends, relatives and co-workers vote as well. We must also support our candidates to the best of our abilities, and once they are elected, we must continue to support them, watch their performance and hold them accountable if they make missteps.

We must march to the polling places in great numbers for each election, and stay engaged in the politics of our communities, our states and our nation. It is a matter of life and death.

SSC Bulldog’s Baseball Program to hold a holiday Youth Catching Camp December 26th and 27th South Suburban College Head Baseball Coach Steve Ruzich will direct a two-day Catching Camp on Thursday, December 26th and Friday, December 27th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Coach Ruzich has directed youth camps for the past 34 years and has taught baseball skills at many other baseball camps

throughout the state.

This clinic will provide catching instruction in the areas of blocking, calling a game, pick offs, pop throwing times, stance and footwork, drills for practice, pop ups, handling pitchers, and conditioning. In addition to Ruzich’s instruction, Bulldog baseball players

will be on hand to help and develop skills. The players’ enthusiasm and expertise always adds to the camp’s success. The Catching Camp is open to boys ages 8-18. Coach Ruzich was an All-American catcher at the College of St. Francis.

He graduated in 1985 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Coach Ruzich had a short stint as a pro catcher before coming to SSC as Head Baseball Coach in 1987, where he has compiled a winning record of 1183-679.

While participation in afterschool programs has increased to 10.2 million students nationwide, for every child in an afterschool program, two more are waiting to get in, according to “America After 3PM,” a household survey commissioned by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization.

“At this time when afterschool programming needs more funding, federal investments are under threat,” says Jodi Grant, executive director of the Afterschool Alliance. “And any cuts would mean that more children are unsupervised in the afternoons and more working parents are left without the assurance that their children are safe until they return home from their jobs.”

The positive effects of afterschool programs are broad. More than 5,000 sheriffs, police chiefs and prosecutors of the organization Fight Crime: Invest in Kids recently issued a report confirming that the hours between 2 and 5 pm are still prime time for juvenile crime. The report also documented positive outcomes for youth who participate in high-quality afterschool programs.

In many cases, these programs serve as a lifeline, offering nutritious suppers to children from lowincome families who might otherwise go hungry.

Organizers of the recent “Lights on Afterschool” rally say the 20th anniversary celebration underscored the need to invest in afterschool programs, which offer students homework help, mentors, college and job readiness, healthy snacks, as well as programming in subjects like robotics, computer programming, arts, music and sports.

The only national rally for afterschool, the celebration, organized by the Afterschool Alliance, included some 10,000 events, including roundtable discussions, open houses, science fairs, fun runs, student showcases, academic contests, community service, sports competitions and more. Events focused on the environment, growing and cooking healthy food, space exploration, technology, arts and literacy, and other issues, providing an opportunity for community members to see the skills and talents students hone at their afterschool programs.

“Financial support is needed to expand access to afterschool programs and help keep their lights on,” says Grant. “Every citizen can urge lawmakers at every level, as well as businesses and philanthropies, to invest in these programs, which help children, families and communities.” _________________________________________
