FOLLETT, ACCLAIMED AUTHOR KWAME ALEXANDER ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP Follett and Kwame Alexander, recently announced they have formed a partnership to launch All Books for All Kids, a literacy campaign to ensure children have access to a wide range of books no matter their background. The partnership, teams Follett – the largest provider of educational materials and technology solutions to PreK-12 libraries, classrooms, learning centers and school districts in the United States – with Alexander, a New York Times Bestselling Author, Newbery Medalist, global literacy advocate, and Founding Editor of Versify, the new publishing imprint from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

“It was Lois Lowry who said, ‘Kids deserve the right to think that they can change the world.’ How they begin to imagine a better world is through books,” Alexander said. “Literature can help them see what’s possible, can help them be more connected to each other. The medal, presented by the American Library Association, is considered the highest award for children’s literature.

AMERICAN RED CROSS RESPONDS TO 17 FIRES Disaster responders with the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois recently responded to 17 fires across the 21-county region. The fires occurred in many neighborhoods including Rockford, Bolingbrook, Posen, Riverdale, Naperville and Gurnee with 6 fires happening in the city of Chicago.

The Red Cross responds to over 60,000 disasters each year. Some are large scale disasters like Hurricane Florence, recently impacting the east coast.

DUCKWORTH, DURBIN URGE DHS TO WITHDRAW “PUBLIC CHARGE” RULE U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) joined U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and 18 of their Senate colleagues recently in urging the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to withdraw its proposed “public charge” rule, which would bar legal immigrants from obtaining permanent residency if they or members of their household use or have used public assistance programs like SNAP or Medicaid. In a letter to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, the senators warned that such a policy would deter struggling families from applying for benefits and negatively affect millions of U.S. Citizen children.

Skills for Chicagoland’s Future recently hosted its fourth annual Employment Champions Breakfast to celebrate the placement of more than 5,500 Chicagoland residents in open jobs.

The event was an awards ceremony, a fundraiser and networking opportunity to build support for the organization’s mission of returning the unemployed and underemployed back to work.

Skills for Chicagoland’s Future is a nonprofit organization that works to find sustainable employment opportunities for residents of Chicago. They also help local employers connect with qualified job seekers.

“We have been around since 2012 and since then we have placed more than 5,500 individuals into various roles and we place approximately 1,200 a year. We work in multiple industries from manufacturing to retail to professional services to healthcare and the

roles tend to be entry-level level positions both part-time and full-time. Primarily, our placement comes from the South and West Sides of Chicago from the communities that have the highest unemployment,” said Cherita Ellens, executive vice president of business operations and communications at Skills for Chicagoland’s Future.

At the Employment Champion Breakfast, the organizations unveiled a three-year plan to “Inspire Every Company to Hire the Unemployed and Underemployed” through advocacy, consulting, career enhancement services and job placements. As part of this plan, a new goal was instated to place 9,000 job seekers by the end of 2020, with 45 percent of those new hires coming from Chicago’s top ten neighborhoods for unemployment.

Two awards were given to current partners of the Skills for Chicagoland’s Future organizations. The Champion for the Unemployed Award was presented to Walgreens Boots Alliance which has hired more than 80 job seekers since 2014. The

Advocate for the Unemployed Award was presented to the Saint Sabina Employment Resource Center which connects Auburn Gresham, Englewood, and South Side residents to meaningful and sustainable career opportunities and has been a long-time partner of the organization and a vital link to local residents on the South Side.

“We’re really excited about our growth and we continue to have the Employment Champion Breakfast because it is extremely important for us to make sure that our stories of impact are shared to highlight the importance of our work so that our current partners can continue to be reenergized around the work that we’re doing. There are tons of community organizations and partners out there and employers and funders can choose to partner with whoever they want, so it’s important for them to be able to see, touch, and feel the impact of their investment of both time and money,” said Ellens.

Hyde Park School of Dance Presents 25th Anniversary Nutcracker Dec. 14-16 To continue its 25th anniversary season, Hyde Park School of Dance (HPSD) offers fans of ballet, modern and hip hop its annual presentation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, featuring more than 175 dancers—from seven-year-olds to grandparents, including members of the pre-professional Studio Company and senior dancers who have grown up at the school— supported by more than 100 volunteers. Performances are December 14–16 at Mandel Hall on the University of Chicago campus, 1131 E. 57th Street, Chicago.

Staged by HPSD Founding Artistic Director August Tye, ballet mistress and choreographer at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the 90-minute narrated production follows Clara, Fritz and the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer from the family holiday party and the midnight battle with the Mouse Queen and her troops through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets.

HPSD includes a hip hop dance battle again this year to showcase the range of dance genres the school offers, as well as send a message of peace—instead of battling with swords, the mouse-soldiers use hip hop as their “weapons.”

Each year, HPSD casts one or more Chicago VIPs as the honorary Mother Ginger.

Adding a special element to the performance experience, the Hyde Park School of Dance Holiday Bazaar offers an opportunity to meet characters from The Nutcracker, finish holiday shopping from the wares of local vendors and indulge in a hot chocolate bar and other treats. The Holiday Bazaar takes place during the weekend in the McCormick Tribune Lounge on the first floor of the Reynolds Club, the same building housing Mandel Hall. Specific times will be announced.

SCD Hosts Its Most Successful Fundraiser, Raising More than $92,000 See Chicago Dance (SCD), the dance industry’s nonprofit marketing and advocacy organization, hosted its fourth Annual Gala September 25 at City Winery, 1200 W. Randolph Street. With nearly 250 people in attendance, the event celebrated Chicago’s thriving dance community and honored two individuals who have been important to its success: Shirley Mordine, founder and artistic director of Mordine & Co. Dance Theater, and Angelique Power, president of the Field Foundation of Illinois.

The most successful fundraiser in the organization’s history, the Gala raised more than $92,000 from a combination of ticket sales, contributions, sponsorships, a $2,500 Challenge Matching Grant sponsored by Bill Melamed and Jamey Lundblad and a $1,000 match sponsored by Patti Eylar and Charlie Gardner.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended to congratulate the honorees and SCD for their achievements. His remarks stated, “Chicago’s dance community is one of the most vibrant in the world. We are blessed to have such a diverse and engaged dance community that entertains, enlightens and inspires audiences from every neighborhood and visitors from all walks of life.”

This evening, we celebrate Angelique Power with the Distinguished Service to the Chicago Dance Field Award and Shirley Mordine with our Legacy Award because the leadership and vision they both have demonstrated,

and continue to provide, gives us all greater access to the power of art and infuse our city with exceptional, joyous dance.”

Power received the Distinguished Service to the Dance Field Award, which recognizes outstanding philanthropic leadership and honors someone who has made tremendous contributions to the health and

vibrancy of the Chicago dance sector, presented to her by Gala Co-Chairs Boone and Hall.

McStraw presented the Legacy Award, which honors someone who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the field and made a momentous impact on the Chicago dance community, to Mordine, founder/artistic director of Mordine & Co. Dance Theater and founder and past director of the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago.

Proceeds from the Annual Gala support a variety of SCD programs that bolster dance organizations and more deeply educate audiences, such as Chicago Dance Month (annual celebration promoting 60+ dance performances and educational/audience engagement events); Moving Dialogs (forward-thinking discussion series for artists and audiences); quarterly convenings of the dance community (peer networking and guest speakers representing funders, advocacy groups and professional services); a membership program for dance companies/organizations (92 organizations and artists in 2018); and subsidized rental of a portable dance floor and sound equipment for use by member organizations and artists.

Save lives — by giving people viruses

The world’s most frightening infections aren’t carried by plague-infested rats, rabid dogs, or chimps with Ebola. They’re transmitted by “superbugs” -- disease-causing bacteria that can’t be killed by antibiotics.

This year, superbugs will kill about 700,000 people, including 23,000 Americans. That toll surge in the coming years as ever-evolving bacteria develop resistance to more antibiotics.

By 2050, superbugs could kill 10 million people annually.

We can avert this grim future. “Bacteriophages” -- viruses that infect only bacteria -can destroy antibiotic-resistant superbugs. The U.S. government, however, isn’t doing enough to facilitate the development of these viruses.

That needs to change.

Antibiotics don’t work as well as they used to. From 2012 to 2014, the share of bacterial infections resistant to antibiotics rose from 5 percent to 11 percent.

Why? For years, doctors doled out an-

tibiotics willy-nilly. Today, up to half of all prescribed antibiotics are unnecessary or used ineffectively.

Whenever antibiotics are used, some mutant bacteria survive. But the more an antibiotic is used, the more rapidly bacteria become resistant, reducing the effectiveness of the drug.

New treatments for superbugs are needed, but there have been no major novel antibiotic developments since the 1960s. That’s largely because pharmaceutical companies are abandoning antibiotic research. It’s takes ten years and $2.9 billion to bring a drug to market. So companies develop drugs that will make as much money as possible. Since drugs for chronic diseases make people life-long subscribers, and antibiotics are “one and done,” developers opt to make the former.

So researchers must look beyond antibiotics and devote more resources to novel treatments -- like bacteriophage therapy. Our planet is home to trillions and trillions of bacteriophages -- phages for short. Each phage evolves to

attack a specific bacterium.

If a patient has a bacterial infection, she could take a cocktail of many phages in the hope that some will target the infection. The treatment can be modified with different phages if the first cocktail is ineffective. And phages rarely produce side effects.

Phages are already working wonders overseas. Doctors in the Republic of Georgia and Poland have used them for decades. One Texas woman with a debilitating infection recently flew 6,500 miles to Georgia to try phage therapy. Within weeks, she made a full recovery.

Despite this, phage research is underfunded.

The National Institutes of Health only spent $473 million on antibiotic resistance research last fiscal year. Just a third of it went to phage therapy.

That’s chump change. Just look at how the government funds other health initiatives.

Since 2004, the government has funneled $1.6 billion into bioterrorism defense research annually, even though there haven’t been any notable bioterror attacks.

Even a smallpox attack did occur, officials estimate it would only infect tens of thousands.

By comparison, we know superbugs could kill millions.

It’s also difficult to develop phage therapies.

Phages aren’t a static chemical compound -- they quickly evolve just like the mutating bacteria, giving them an edge over antibiotics.

Even when a bacteria develops resistance to the phage, new phages can be found or existing phages can evolve.

But this also makes it difficult to evaluate phages in a clinical trial. Right now, the FDA only approves phages for use on a case-by-case basis.

Going forward, phage therapy needs its own separate FDA approval track.

Superbugs are becoming more deadly. The government must realize the best way to defeat killer bacteria may be to give people harmless viruses.

Medline Awards $150,000 in Breast Cancer Community Grants for Innovative Programs Medline has awarded $150,000 in its inaugural Medline Breast Cancer Awareness grants to six organizations fighting to eradicate breast cancer and providing counseling. The recently launched Medline Community Impact Grant Program for Breast Cancer Awareness drives awareness around prevention and early detection by providing support to organizations on the front lines of patient care.

COMMUNITIES BIG AND SMALL While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 90 percent when detected early, the reality is breast cancer is the second leading cause

of death among women in the United States. The six organizations represent the various types of communities Medline serves, from rural towns to big cities, and they work with diverse groups of patients in all stages – from prevention, detection and even grief counseling for families and loved ones.

High Interest Rates Put Pressure on Auto Sales in September, According to Edmunds High interest rates continued to put pressure on new vehicle sales in September, according to the car shopping experts at Edmunds. The annual percentage rate (APR) on new financed vehicles averaged 5.8 percent in September, compared to an average APR of 4.8 percent in September 2017 and 4.1 percent five years ago. Interest rates have stayed above 5 percent for eight months in a row, mirroring APRs that the industry witnessed prior to the recession.

Job Growth Holds Steady, Hourly Earnings Growth Up in September The Paychex | IHS Markit Small Business Employment Watch for September shows the tight labor market continues to restrain job growth, while hourly earnings wage growth and weekly hours worked saw modest increases. At 99.18, the Small Business Jobs Index is consistent with last month's level, but slowed 0.23 percent during the past quarter, and 0.75 since this time last year. The rate of hourly earnings growth in September stands at 2.33 percent ($0.61), increasing for the first time in more than a year. Small And Mid-Size Business Owners Feel A Slight Chill In The Air Historic optimism about the national economy from the spring (50 percent) chilled slightly this fall (40 percent), but remains well above fall 2017 (29 percent), according to the PNC Economic Outlook, a semiannual telephone survey of small and middle-market business owners and executives. Four out of 10 business leaders described their outlook for the national economy as optimistic, the second-highest rating in the 15-year survey.

Those with a pessimistic outlook increased to 12 percent this fall from the historic low of 8 percent in the spring.

Similarly, half (51 percent) are optimistic regarding their own businesses for the next six months, a drop from the historic high of 58 percent in spring 2018.

Pessimism remains at a historic low of 4 percent.

"Optimism for small and mid-sized business owners about the national economy, their local economies, and their own companies remains near record highs, although it has slipped slightly since the spring, according to our fall 2018 survey," said Gus Faucher, chief economist of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. "Hiring expectations also are near a record high, as we continue to witness the second-longest economic expansion in U.S. history."

Challenging Borders, Boundaries and Barriers The Illinois Committee on Black Concerns in Higher Education (ICBCHE) recently took note of the unprecedented number of African American women leading higher education institutions in the State of Illinois.

Customarily, white men overwhelmingly represent the face of college/university presidents. 75% of college presidents are men, leaving the remaining 25% divided among men of color, white women, and women of color.

Thus, the uniqueness of having SEVEN African American Women in the State of Illinois, FIVE in the Chicagoland area serving as college/ university presidents, is a phenomenon most worthy of being recognized.

ICBCHE will host a celebratory Presidents Dessert Reception to fete the SEVEN African American women higher education leaders.

Host Alpana Singh returns to WTTW’s CHECK, PLEASE WTTW’s Emmy-winning local restaurant review series CHECK, PLEASE! premieres its 18th season with a familiar face in the hosting chair! Susan G. Komen’s highly successful Passionately Pink for the Cure program engages millions in October who chose a day to wear pink, fundraise for Komen and spread life-saving messages of early detection. As the former co-anchor of The

Early Show, René interviewed countless leaders and celebrities, including First Lady Laura Bush and Senator John McCain.

In early January 2007, René underwent a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy, the removal of both breasts. Today, she is completely healthy and living life to the fullest. In addition to being a wife, mother, business woman and tireless breast cancer activist, René is the author of Good Enough Mother, published in March 2007.

René is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and is a recipient of the 2004 Gracie Allen Award for Individual Achievement in the National Best Anchor category for her breast cancer series. She is married to Buff Parham, and has two children.

Renowned Chicago-based photographer Steve Schapiro has given history a human face throughout his career, contributing images to Life, Look, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and numerous other publications.

Schapiro’s work is celebrated in Activists and Icons: The Photographs of Steve Schapiro, a special exhibition on view now at Illinois Holocaust Museum. Viewers will experience the breadth of the civil rights movement, as well as vivid portraits of celebrities who challenged - and changed - our cultural norms.

The exhibition’s 46 largeformat photographs tell the story of seminal moments in history from the March on Washington (1963) to Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign (1968). Schapiro’s documentary approach comprises emotional portraits of heroes ranging from Rosa Parks to a sanitation striker, and from Joan Baez to Rita Schwerner, widow of Michael Schwerner, one of the three activists killed by the Ku Klux Klan near Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1964.

Other images suggest how martyrs become icons. In a haunting triptych of images, the subject is missing, as Schapiro’s camera surveys Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Memphis motel room the day after King’s 1968 assassination.

As he documented the tumult of the 1960s, Schapiro spent days and weeks with many of his subjects, some of whom — Robert Kennedy, James Baldwin, and David Bowie — became his close

friends. These personal relationships add depth to the historic moments he captured.

Guest curator and civil rights historian Erik S. Gellman observes, “Schapiro documented the civil rights movement with care and intimacy, unlike others who arrived at a pivotal moment and left once they got the shot.”

Museum CEO Susan Abrams adds, “To some, Steve Schapiro is as much an icon as those he photographed, and we are fortunate to have him as a partner for this compelling exhibition. Visitors will be transported into the lives of the principal protagonists of the 20th century.”

Schapiro picked up a camera at age nine, focusing on his working-class neighbors in the Bronx. In college, he planned to be a writer but soon realized that storytelling with a camera could be just as powerful as storytelling with a typewriter. Early on, he studied with W. Eugene Smith, who revolutionized the photographic essay with a humanistic approach to his subjects.

This ethos of intimacy informs all of Schapiro’s images, starting with his earliest work as a photojournalist in 1961. His prolific output also includes portraits of the most influential celebrities of our time, ranging from Muhammad Ali to David Bowie, from Truman Capote to Barbra Streisand – all of whom appear in the exhibition. Schapiro has always had an undeniable penchant for conveying something unexpected, even in those we

think we know well.

Activists and Icons: The Photographs of Steve Schapiro exemplifies Illinois Holocaust Museum’s call to action: “Take History to Heart. Take a Stand for Humanity.” Schapiro’s subjects have done that, as has the photographer, by using his powerful imagery to tell stories through the human face.

Illinois Holocaust Museum, founded by Holocaust survivors, is dedicated to giving voice to human experience. Its permanent Karkomi Holocaust Exhibition is populated with personal narratives - in videos, photographs, objects, and documents - of those who lived the experience. The courage of their truth-telling fuels the Museum’s mission. In its active schedule of special exhibitions, including Activists and Icons, the Museum illuminates other moments of crisis worldwide and calls upon its visitors to become Upstanders by suggesting ways to take action.
