ROCK THE VOTE LAUNCHES DEMOCRACY CLASS TO EDUCATE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING, REGISTERING TO VOTE With the midterm elections not too far away, Rock the Vote, the 28-year-old nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging and building the political power of young people, has launched Democracy Class.

Democracy Class is being taught in over 2,000 schools across the country and is a high school curriculum on the history and importance of voting. The class culminates in registering and pre-registering students to vote.

Rock the Vote partnered with Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), to update and expand the Democracy Class curriculum, which was originally created in 2010. Rock the Vote is also working with the SPLC to mobilize its network of more than 400,000 teachers. The new curriculum includes additional lessons that cover the subjects of modern-day voting rights, how local elections relate to issues impacting their community, and the importance of civic participation. The Democracy Class initiative is being sponsored by American Eagle.

FIRST-EVER GOVERNOR’S SUMMIT SHOWCASES BEST PRACTICES, URGES EXPANSION Hundreds of business and workforce leaders recently met with Gov. Bruce Rauner, Illinois education officials and state agency representatives for a first-ever Governor’s Summit highlighting work-based learning initiatives statewide. Rauner who hosted the summit, entitled WORK LEARN GROW: Pathways to the Jobs of Illinois’ Future, spoke about Internships, apprenticeships and other work-based learning programs that provide Illinoisans with the hands-on training and that lead to a steady flow of skilled, ready workers for businesses.

“The importance of efforts on this front cannot be overemphasized. I applaud the leaders whose successful programs are being featured today, and I implore everyone to continue to expand this great work,” said Rauner.

The summit, held at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, is one result of a $80,000 grant awarded to Illinois by the National Governors Association to expand work-based learning programs. For the first time in the history of its existence, the National Newspaper Publishers Association, which represents over 200 Black-owned media companies across the U.S., recently made its way to Ile-Ife in Nigeria for a culturally impactful inaugural trade mission.

The NNPA, under the leadership of its president and CEO, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, was invited to Ile-Ife in Nigeria, by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, The Oonirisa (Ooni) of Ife, for The Olojo Festival, held on September 27 through October 3.

The Olojo Festival is a very prestigious annual celebration to commemorate the dawn of creation and to highlight the historical and spiritual ties of Ile-Ife being the cradle of human existence.

The NNPA was officially invited by The Ooni of Ife to participate in the annual Festival as a way to better understand the history and cultural significance of Ile-Ife, as well as to better inform African Americans and others throughout the world about the development opportunities and important cultural intersections between our

Ile-Ife is celebrated as the original source of all mankind and The Olojo Festival is celebrated annually as the spiritual confirmation that God created the world and deposited the elements of creation in Ile-Ife. The city of Ile-Ife is widely known for its

many sacred shrines and spiritual sites that are meant to regularly highlight, promote and remember the Yoruba race and its cultural identities. The members of the NNPA delegation were able to visit many of these shrines and sites during their visit to the historical land.

Over the course of their visit to Ile-Ife, Nigeria, the NNPA participated in all aspects of The Olojo Festival and shared many pictures, videos and coverage of this awe-inspiring and culturally significant annual celebration with its many readers.

Boys And Girls Clubs Of Chicago Unveils Renovation of East Garfield Park Facility Continued from page 1

More than $500,000 was invested in renovating and transforming the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Club (King Club) in East Garfield Park.

A grand reopening ceremony was recently held to reveal the finished work which features a new indoor pool, a renovated recreation center, a high-tech music studio, a new HVAC system, and several cosmetic improvements inside the facility.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago was founded in 1902 and operates under a mission of enabling all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. The organization serves nearly 18,000 youth from the ages of 6 to 18 and works to provide members with the emotional, educational, physical, and cultural resources that allow them to enjoy their childhood and grow into thriving adults, according to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago’s website.

violence, where they could be safe from danger. We’re life-changing and our kids are the first to say that be it not for the club, their lives would have taken a very different path,” said Mimi LeClair, president and CEO of Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago.

One of the most anticipated new features of the King Club, located on 2950 W. Washington St., is the indoor swimming pool which will be used to provide swim classes and water safety lessons for members.

“It broke my heart to see this love-

ly pool that had been dried up for so long because it was in need of so many repairs. Now, we can offer our members swimming lessons, water safety lessons, and first aid training through the American Red Cross who will come in and teach lifesaving

skills,” said LeClair.

In addition to the pool, the King Club also revealed, “The Dream Studio” which is a brand new stateof-the-art recording studio that was sponsored by Peoples Gas. The studio will allow young people to explore careers in music and audio production, like podcasting, sound recording, and musical engineering, from a behind the scenes perspective.

During the renovation, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago was intentional about creating a space that would be inviting for teenagers, who are often the most vulnerable when it comes to bad influences in their community, according to LeClair.

“One of our many goals at the Boys and Girls Club is to deepen our reach to the teen population, a population that we view as very vulnerable,” said LeClair. “We want to make sure that we offer our teens opportunities that are exciting to them otherwise they just won’t come.

This new teen center will be a place for them to relax with friends, have conversations, and just kind of hang out.”

Still Point Theatre Collective is a dynamic community of Chicago-based artists who use theatre to uplift, inform and inspire, and make a difference in the lives of underrepresented individuals. It was founded by actress, poet and social

activist Lisa Wagner-Carollo in 1993. Still Point serves the community through two main branches of programming: producing original professional plays, and providing arts outreach programs to marginalized communities. These communities include developmentally diverse adults, currently and formerly incarcerated women, and senior citizens.

Edwina Gateley is a poet, theologian, writer, artist and lay minister from Lancaster, England. Her life has been described by Publisher’s Weekly as “fascinating – an exceptional blend of contemplation and action”. Her journey has led her to teaching in Africa, founding the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), sojourning in the Sahara Desert,

Sequence Ch!cago Returns to Navy Pier with Talented Lineup of Local Artists

or the second consecutive year, Navy Pier is welcoming the fall/winter season with Sequence Ch!cago, a free dynamic performance series that features local artists, musicians and cultural organizations by showcasing their works across the Pier’s various unique platforms.

Over the course of 10 dates between Now and December 19, Sequence Ch!cago will spotlight talented performers from across the city who have inspired and influenced Chicago’s diverse arts scene. Supported by a grant from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, the music performances are free and open to the public.

With programs such as “Sounds of Peace,” “Housegiving” and “A Blues Christmas,” the series is set to offer special themed performances, including a tribute to active U.S. military members and veterans, Thanksgiving, Christmas and other seasonal celebrations. Managing Your Mental Health With Or Without Insurance Coverage ered.

(NAPSI)—Mental health is synonymous with mental wellness. At some point many people will struggle with their mental health. Just like caring for physical health occasionally requires a visit with a physician, caring for mental health may require visiting a mental health professional and, of course, figuring out a way to pay for it.

Insurance Coverage and Payment Options When a person is unable to manage daily activities such as maintaining fulfilling relationships, working productively, coping with the stresses of life, or even recognizing one’s own potential, he or she may be struggling to stay mentally healthy—whether he or she is able to recognize it or not.

If a person has health insurance, it may be helpful to consult with a primary care doctor who could make referrals to local services. When individuals do not have a primary care doctor, they can also use their insurer’s website or call center to locate mental health professionals for treatment.

• Individuals who have insurance through an employer should check the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for information on covered mental health and behavioral services. The Transamerica Center for Health Studies (TCHS) Consumer Healthcare Survey found that 54 percent of respondents have access to employer-sponsored programs for mental health or substance abuse, but only 21 percent of employees were enrolled in these programs.

• The Affordable Care Act requires health insurance purchased through the state Exchange to cover mental health, substance use disorder services and behavioral treatment for current or pre-existing conditions.

• Poor access to and treatment for mental health can be debilitating for veterans. VA Care is provided at government-owned facilities for veterans only, while TRICARE is the government-provided insurance plan for active-duty or retired service members (and their dependents) at private and public facilities, or military health clinics and hospitals. The VA also offers Service-Connected Disability Compensation, which provides a tax-free monthly benefit for veterans who are at least 10 percent disabled because of injuries or diseases that were incurred in or aggravated during active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty training.

• Medicare is a government-funded program that covers almost every senior citizen in the United States. Medicare Part B covers a free yearly depression screening, mental health counseling or therapy visits, as well as outpatient services such as individual and group psychotherapy. The costs and drugs covered with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan will vary by plan, but almost all drugs classified as antidepressants, antipsychotics and anticonvulsants are required to be cov-

Options for the Uninsured According to a 2017 report from Mental Health America, more than 7.5 million people with a mental illness are uninsured. Paying for mental health services without insurance can be costly, but there are some options available, including: • Medicaid—A joint federal and state program that provides free or low-cost health coverage for disabled persons, low-income adults, and pregnant women. Every state implements its own guidelines, so coverage may vary. For years, Medicaid has been the largest payer of mental health-related services in the United States.

• Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—In 2017, an estimated 9.4 million children were covered under CHIP, funded jointly by states and the federal government for uninsured children up to age 19. Like Medicaid, CHIP guidelines are also implemented by each state, so eligibility for coverage may vary.

In addition, there are many facilities and centers that provide services for those with mental health and or substance use disorder needs at a lower cost or work within a patient’s insurance policy: • Mental Health America affiliate locations are nonprofit organizations found in 41 states that help patients navigate the mental health system, providing education, support services and rehabilitation services.

• The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration features a behavioral health treatment facilities locator where you can specify the kind of behavioral health services you are looking for, your insurance type (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) and payment ability (e.g., sliding scale fee, cash, etc.).

• With more than 1,000 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) affiliate locations and state organizations, NAMI lists free resources and educational programs.

• Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics receive Medicaid reimbursement for their mental health and substance use disorder services, including 24-hour crisis care coordination, evidencebased practices and integrated physical care. These facilities are currently available in eight states: Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States.

More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women.

Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.

To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices.

• Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program

Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs.

The NIDDK updated the Sisters Together program guide to include: • Recent data regarding African American obesity rates • Evidence-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy food choices among black women • Highlights from Sisters Together programs developed by different groups around the country • Tips to create a budget to fund a program • Information on how to grow and manage program interest using social media
