NOBLE ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Noble Network of Charter Schools recently announced that Miquel Lewis, a current member of Noble’s board of directors, has assumed the role of vice chair, marking the first time a parent of a Noble student has served in a board leadership role, which is also rare for any major charter school system. Noble added two other board members - Lisette Hernandez joins the board as Noble’s first alumna member as well as noted education leader Aarti Dhupelia.

UNDERWOOD HOSTS LISTENING SESSION ON YOUTH VAPING Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) recently hosted a listening session in Naperville, IL which focused on the youth vaping epidemic. In recent years, vaping and e-cigarette usage has become increasingly popular among children and young adults. Underwood, a nurse and member of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus to End the Youth Vaping Epidemic, has continued to express concern over the potential long-term health impacts of youth vaping.

Vaping has also been identified as a top issue by members of Underwood’s K-12 Advisory Council. During the listening session, Underwood and other officials discussed the local impact of youth vaping in the 14th District of Illinois.

The Bernie Mac Foundation recently hosted the Bernie Mac Birthday Tribute comedy show at the Laugh Factory. The event featured several local stand-up comedians and celebrated what would have been Bernie Mac’s 62nd birthday.

“This will be an evening of laughter, the way my late husband would have wanted,” said Rhonda McCullough, Bernie Mac’s widow and CEO of The Bernie Mac Foundation.

The Bernie Mac Foundation was created by Bernie Mac himself to bring awareness to sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease that he lived with over two decades leading up to his death in 2008.

“The Bernie Mac Foundation was first founded by the late and great Bernard Jeffrey Mc-

Cullough, the world knows him as Bernie Mac. He is our founder and chairman emeritus,” said Maryann Grossett, executive director of the Bernie Mac Foundation. “The mission from the very beginning, has always been to raise awareness for sarcoidosis and to turn that awareness into fundraising to help find a cure for sarcoidosis so that patients will not suffer from sarcoidosis and die from it the way that Bernie did.”

Bernie Mac was born and raised in Chicago and is arguably one of the most well-known comedians to lay claim to the city. He was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in his mid-20’s and lived with the disease for 25 years as he raised his family and became a famous stand-up comedian across the country.

“Bernie was diagnosed as a very young man with this disease and basically when he was first

diagnosed, he was misdiagnosed and we like to let people know that because the disease was even more mysterious back then than it is now,” said Grossett. “The doctor misdiagnosed him as having cancer when in fact, after they get some further research, they found out that he had sarcoidosis.”

Just a year before his death, Bernie Mac created the Bernie Mac Foundation to help others understand what sarcoidosis is and to provide support and hope for those living with the disease.

The recent comedy show was not only an event to celebrate Bernie Mac’s birthday but it was also a fundraiser for the Bernie Mac Foundation so they can continue to carry on his legacy and help those living with sarcoidosis.

CUB Releases 2019 Guide To Help Consumers Reduce TV Costs As part of a yearlong 35th anniversary celebration, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB), one of Illinois’ top consumer advocates, has released its 2019 “Guide to Cutting Your TV Costs.”

CUB’s guide outlines consumers’ choices in the current market,

breaks down the typical cable bill line-by-line, provides strategies for negotiating with a cable provider, and explains options for ditching cable service entirely.

“Cable bills are a constant source of frustration for Illinois consumers who contact us with complaints,” CUB Communications Director Jim Chilsen said recently. “We want to give consumers the knowledge and the tools to take control of their TV costs, whether they choose to stay with cable or cut the cord.”

Domestic Violence Survivors Step Forward to Spur Public Action Terera was two months pregnant before she realized she was being financially abused.

She was the one who paid the bills, but her husband would often physically block her from going to work. When she had the baby early and took a longer-than-expected maternity leave, she was forced to use her retirement savings to pay the family’s rent. With her husband unwilling to get a job, she had to apply for public assistance. But even then, her husband withheld critical information Terera needed to get financial help.

Terera’s emotional story of surviving financial abuse is one of three stories released recently by The Allstate Foundation. The stories put a spotlight on domestic violence during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. By telling the stories of these survivors, The Allstate Foundation hopes to bring this lesser-known form of domestic violence out of the shadows and put a face to the often-invisible epidemic of financial abuse.

“People think that you can just leave – you

can just get up and go – and it’s not always like that,” said Susan, another survivor who tells her story. “I felt like I had a monster living in my house that I couldn’t get out.”

These women escaped their abusive relationships with the help of The Allstate Foundation’s Moving Ahead Curriculum, which aims to empower survivors to become secure through financial education. Many victims can’t break free from the financial abuse, and sometimes they don’t even recognize that they’re in an abusive relationship.

The three survivors – Terera, Susan and Krista – are stepping forward to make a change and raise awareness of the signs of abuse.

Domestic violence affects one in four women, and even though financial abuse is present in 99% of domestic violence situations, it’s seldom discussed and commonly misunderstood.

A 2018 Allstate Foundation survey revealed that 51% of financial abuse survivors wouldn’t know how to help another victim, even having experienced abuse themselves.

“It’s more important than ever to have these three brave women share their stories,” said Ellen Lisak, Allstate Foundation senior program officer. “Our research shows that domestic violence has become an increasingly taboo topic, despite the momentum and openness of today’s women’s movement. To end the cycle of abuse, we must have meaningful conversations to shine a light on how financial abuse traps victims. We all have to educate ourselves and drive positive cultural change.”

The three videos are part of The Allstate Foundation’s campaign “ which aims to spur public awareness, dialogue and action on this pervasive issue. The campaign launched in August with “Signs,” an online video featuring Purple Purse program ambassador Serena Williams.

Each survivor’s story provides unique context to the issue, illustrating the many ways financial abuse traps victims and how financial empowerment resources can be their key to safety.

The Allstate Foundation urges the public to help empower victims to break free and remain

free from abuse by learning the signs of financial abuse and having conversations around the topic if they suspect someone needs help.

Urban October at University of Chicago to Focus on Urgent Challenges Facing Global Cities The University of Chicago is preparing to host Urban October at UChicago in collaboration with UN-Habitat. The month-long initiative brings together policy leaders, public officials, community members, and leading researchers from Chicago and around the world to focus on some of the most profound challenges facing global cities.

Today, 4.3 billion people live in urban areas. That number is projected to expand to 5.1 billion within 10 years and 6.6 billion within 30 years. Already challenging urban issues are exacerbated by climate change contributing to extreme weather and water shortages; pollution impacting health and life expectancy; and violence and political instability threatening the futures of cities around the world.

Urban October at UChicago is an initiative of the University of Chicago Urban Network — research institutes, policy labs, centers, and academic units at the university focused on pioneering urban science and practice. Week by week, university scholars will convene key stakeholders and present new research and collaborations that will confront global urban challenges and identify emerging opportunities.

The University of Chicago will tackle these topics and more through the following key events: l On October 15, the University of Chicago Crime Lab marks its 10th anniversary and looks to the future with THE NEXT TEN, a gathering that includes a conversation with government and non-profit leaders, including Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot, Chicago Public Schools CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson, and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson. Crime Lab has been at the vanguard of a model of collaborative social science research focused on solving the most pressing policy problems in cities by working in partnership

with policymakers and practitioners. l On October 23-25, officials from the United Nations, as well as leaders and community organizers from Africa, Europe and Latin America, will gather at the University of Chicago for the Global Symposium on Sustainable Cities and Neighborhoods. Hosted by the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation and led by ecology and evolution professor Luis Bettencourt, the symposium will help set a shared agenda toward empowering millions of neighborhoods to tackle such issues as human development, infrastructure, and climate resilience. l The Air Quality Life Index (AQLI)®, created by economics professor Michael Greenstone and the Energy Policy Institute at UChicago, marks its first anniversary in measuring the impact of particulate air pollution on life expectancy at a local scale.

The Index finds that particulate air pollution is the single greatest threat to human health globally— making it of critical importance as heating season begins in many of the world’s largest cities.

“We set up the Crime Lab 10 years ago to work closely with government and non-profits to generate more actionable research and development on the most pressing criminal justice and education challenges of our time,” said Jens Ludwig, Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor at Harris Public Policy and director of the Crime Lab. “We’ve seen signs of progress, but there’s the potential – and the need – to do much more.”

Wanted: Snowplow drivers to join the IDOT team The Illinois Department of Transportation recently renewed its call for qualified individuals to step forward and apply for seasonal positions to help with snow-and-ice removal across the state. Through the department’s annual “snowbird” program, temporary snowplow drivers are hired every year on a full-time and on-call basis.

“Snowbirds are a critical part of our overall effort to clear roads and keep Illinois moving during snow-and-ice season,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Not only does the job perform an essential public service and ensure safe travel, but it’s a great way to earn extra money during the winter months.”

Snowbirds are required to promptly respond to emerging weather situations for snow-and-ice removal and

stay prepared to work in emergency conditions at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Applicants must have a commercial driver’s license and submit to a criminal background check. A pre-employment physical, vision testing, and drug and alcohol screening also are required. Veterans are encouraged to apply. In rural areas, farmers and agricultural workers have historically filled out the snowbird ranks.

SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to Businesses and Residents of Illinois Affected by June Severe Storms and Flooding Illinois businesses and residents affected by the severe storms and flooding on June 26-28, 2019 can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, Acting Administrator Christopher Pilkerton announced recently.

Pilkerton made the loans available in response to a letter from Gov. JB Pritzker on Sept. 20, 2019 requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA. The declaration covers Cook and Will counties and the adjacent counties of DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake and McHenry in Illinois and Lake County in Indiana.

“The SBA is strongly committed to providing the people of Illinois with the most effective and customerfocused response possible to assist businesses of all sizes, homeowners and renters with federal disaster loans,” said Pilkerton. “Getting businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our highest priority at SBA.”

SBA’s Customer Service Representatives will be available at the Disaster Loan Outreach Centers to answer questions about the disaster loan program and help individuals complete their applications.

How Schools are Changing to Improve STEAM Learning StatePoint - As STEAM learning has grown in prominence in classrooms across the country, so has the role of tools and resources facilitating this approach to learning.

Here are five examples of how technology is supporting the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in classrooms today.

• Lessons brought to life: Virtual reality in the classroom has the power to immerse students in STEAM material more fully than ever before, while giving students with engineering proclivities the opportunity to create their own educational content. America is My Home

Do you consider America to be your home or just the place you happen to live?

September 22 has long been a meaningful date for me and my family. That’s the day, in 1862, when Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

This year, as that date approached, I was listening to one of my all-time favorites, Luther Vandross’s “A House Is Not A Home,” when the question popped into my head: Do I consider America to be my home, or just my house?

I know many in our community feel marginalized-as though America is not the loving, accepting, nurturing place that we often dream of. But, in real life, no homes are idyllic all the time. There are tensions, stresses, arguments and divisions, even in loving families.

So, looking at America with realistic eyes, is it truly my home?

If I posed that question to billionaire entrepreneur David Steward, entertainment giant Tyler Perry, or my boss-Kay Coles James,

the president of The Heritage Foundation-I’d wager they’d all have the same answer.

Each of these leaders has demonstrated that they view America as not just a house but a home. Each has lived a real-life success story.

Rooted in humble beginnings, with the odds at their faces, each stepped beyond the walls of their community and the limits of their circumstances to explore, trail-blaze and ultimately conquer the unknown.

Empowered by emancipation, they have undertaken the all-American

pursuit of happiness and left a lasting mark-a legacy, if you will-on the American identity and our nation’s culture. Today, they stand as beacons of light, shining example to the next generation of what we can accomplish with our God-given talents, the freedoms we enjoy, the opportunities available in our nation and, yes, a whole lot of determination.

As a community, we must be courageous enough to deal with the tragedies we have suffered as a people as well as our past failures-and to learn from them. But let us learn to forgive, and to encourage each other to move on boldly to pursue happiness and make the most of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

As for how I answer the house/ home question...

When I reflect on America’s history, I also think about my family and the legacy of my forefathers and foremothers. Grandma Irene, fully decorated with a third-grade formal education and a Ph.D. in homemaking and rainmaking from the school of wisdom, intentionally pounded history into our household discussions.

Booker T. Washington and their different roles and approaches to liberty, life, and the pursuit of happiness. As we slowly rocked on her front porch during the summer nights, she would proudly whisper about Crispus Attucks the first American to die in the Revolutionary War, Benjamin Banneker, the architectural genesis who designed our nation’s capital, and Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the first person to successfully perform open-heart surgery.

Grandma’s history lessons about great Americans who looked like us convinced me that inalienable rights are the pathway to being better than just good, but good for something. My grandmother believed God anointed us with the power to overcome trials, tribulations, obstacles, disparities, and hopelessness by emancipating ourselves in the walk toward freedom and opportunity.

George Washington viewed freedom much like Grandma did-as a fundamentally internal or spiritual power rather than as a physical or political state. He noted that: All through human experience, we find that the highest and most

complete freedom comes slowly, and is purchased only at a tremendous cost. Freedom comes through seeming restriction.... Those persons in the U.S. who are most truly free in body, mind, morals, are those who have passed through the most severe training-are those who have exercised the most patience, and at the same time, the most dogged persistence and determination.”

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation loosed the chains that had too long bound our people.

It opened the door to us enjoying the freedoms that, under the Constitution, belong to all citizens.

With that act, America became a home for my family-one that gives us freedom: the freedom to use our Godgiven abilities for our own benefit and the freedom to pursue happiness according to our own lights.

The next generation has those freedoms, so let’s invest our time teaching them how make America their home.

Musical Drama

By Local College Professor Ignites The Stage Two performances of 1619, a multi-generational production, will take place at Kennedy King College (KKC) on Saturday, October 12 at 2:00 and 6:30 PM.

1619, a multi-generational production, commemorates the 400 years since the first ship of African slaves arrived in America. Performances commemorate the struggles, recognize the heroes and celebrate the story of America’s African sons and daughters.

Two performances of the production are being held at Kennedy King College (KKC) on Saturday, October 12 at 2:00 and 6:30 PM. Ted Williams III, playwright, producer and one of the actors in the production, is also chair of Kennedy King College’s Social Sciences Department.
