Community activist sees the value of relationships in combatting violence Continued from page 1

Bamani Obadele has been involved with community organizing, public policy and advocacy for more than 20 years. Now, he is bringing his experience to Acclivus, Inc. as a community engagement director.

Obadele said his work in community organizing started off socially, but became political at some point along the way. He said he feels a sense of pride and joy in working in the community.

Obadele worked with LeVon Stone, while Stone was at Ceasefire, then went on to do work with Acclivus, Inc., a community health organization that uses its social network to serve individuals in the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

“This year, we’ve expanded into six communities on the South side with a strategy for violence reduction,” Obadele said. “My job is to engage with the community, civic, community stakeholders and elected officials around the work that we’re doing at Acclivus, Inc.” Obadele said he also works with the organizational supervisors to provide

them with direction in working with the community. He said he takes a holistic approach in addressing community violence. “You can have street outreach guys, but it’s going to take working with residents and law enforcement and elected officials to solve the problem,” he said.

Obadele added focusing on workforce development is also a part of the approach. He said it’s an area in which Acclivus, Inc. is expanding. According to Obadele, Acclivus, Inc. also uses an interdisciplinary approach when it comes to addressing violence.

He added people with lived experience, people who had been involved in street organizations, people who had been assailants and those who had been victims—helped start the organization because they wanted to have, “an African American perspective in addressing violence,” he said. “You would not find a more robust organization with folks with lived experience and [who] have the credentials and [who] have the insight and relationships to be able to address and to do the work,” he added.

Obadele said the most important part of the work Acclivus, Inc. is doing

is engaging with high risk individuals.

Acclivus, Inc. makes housing referrals for those individuals as well as talks them down in certain situations.

He added he doesn’t think people really realize the depth of street outreach that is taking place across the city. “There are outreach workers who are everyday putting their life on the line to address community violence in a very sincere and high-level way,” he said. It is very important, he added, to establish relationships with high risk individuals in the community.

Building relationships with high risk individuals in the community is key towards reducing violence, he said. Being able to go into any community in areas where even police couldn’t go, having the types of relationships to be able to find out what happened, and in some cases, talk people down, are all a part of reducing the violence he explained.

Obadele went on to say that even though the outreach workers may not have been able to prevent every single incident, he thinks they’ve done “a great job” with getting involved and with mitigating the incidence of the shootings.

OP-ED: Trump Regime vs. The Icc: The Wrong Side Of “Sovereignty”

In June, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order providing for sanctions against persons who “have directly engaged in any effort by the [International Criminal Court] to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute any United States personnel without the consent of the United States.”

On September 2, The US regime imposed such sanctions on two ICC officials: Fatou Bensouda, the court’s chief prosecutor, and Phakiso Mochchoko, head of its Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division.”

Their offense? Investigating allegations of US war crimes in Afghanistan.

Such investigations, says White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, “are an attack on the rights of the American people and threaten to infringe upon our national sovereignty.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thunders that the US regime “will not tolerate [the ICC’s] illegitimate attempts to subject Americans to its jurisdiction.”

There certainly are questions of sovereignty and jurisdiction here, but Pompeo and Company are on the wrong side of those questions.

Afghanistan’s US-installed, US-allied regime ratified the Rome Statute in 2003, thereby placing war crimes committed on its territory, and the persons accused of committing those crimes, under the court’s jurisdiction.

Like it or not, that assignment of jurisdiction is an exercise of Afghan sovereignty.

Mike Pompeo wouldn’t object to a Czech police officer arresting an American driver accused of running a red light and hitting a pedestrian in Prague, or to a Czech court trying the case.

sanctioning Thailand’s Revenue Department or Central Tax Court for charging and trying an American who resides in Bangkok for evasion of that regime’s taxes.

The basis of the modern Westphalian Model nation-state is the notion of each state’s sovereignty within its borders. That sovereignty includes the power to assign jurisdiction to courts to investigate and try crimes committed within those borders.

Refusal to cooperate with the ICC’s investigations, or to extradite Americans charged with war crimes, absent US ratification of the Rome Statute, are also problematic. Protecting accused war criminals and denying victims their day in court just isn’t a very good look on any regime.

But at least those positions would be arguable from a sovereignty standpoint. This isn’t. Sanctioning the court’s officials for

exercising their assigned jurisdiction is a violation of Afghan sovereignty, not an exercise of US sovereignty.

Of course, the US government could avoid entanglements with the ICC simply and easily, by ending its practice of invading countries halfway around the world, occupying those countries for decades at a time, and covering the world with military bases and troops to staff them.

If Trump and Pompeo don’t want US military personnel to do the time, they should stop sending US military personnel abroad to do the crimes.

Morehouse Receives $9 Million National Science Foundation Grant to Research STEM Education at HBCUs When Dr. Lycurgus L. Muldrow went to college, he was reading at a 7th-grade level. He’d dealt with health issues as a kid, and like many Black students, he found himself underserved by his school system, despite both of his parents serving as faculty members at historically Black colleges and universities.

Now, after attending an HBCU himself, he serves as the executive director of the HBCU Undergraduate Success Research Center, a new initiative by Morehouse College funded by a $9 million grant from the National Science Foundation, which aims to study STEM education programs at historically Black colleges and universities.

“The reality is, despite the extremely positive contribution that HBCUs make in STEM education, in the literature and in the nation, there’s still a deficit-oriented discourse concerning HBCUs’ contributions to society,” said Muldrow, also director in the Office of Academic Affairs at Morehouse.

“Through the supportive mechanism of the HBCUs, I discovered resilience,” he added.

The HBCU Undergraduate Success Research Center, otherwise known as STEM-US, will ultimately research successful STEM programs from 50 HBCUs, collecting data and ultimately sharing best practices in bringing students majoring in STEM disciplines from underrepresented backgrounds to graduation.

Part of the grant will be shared with Spelman College and Virginia State University, as well.

Dr. Michael E. Hodge, Morehouse’s provost, wants to see the center become “a clearinghouse, a repository, a generator of information and knowledge and innovation” when it comes to educating Black students, he said, but also students in general. “I think that’s the legacy.

This will be the center that’s pointed to as the center that created the space and scale to demonstrate the true capacity and genius in every student to be productive contributors to society.”

The HBCU Undergraduate Success Research Center is a new initiative by Morehouse College funded by a $9 million grant from the National Science Foundation, which aims to study STEM education programs at historically Black colleges and universities.

At the center, an interdisciplinary team of scholars will work on six different research initiatives, all “converging around” the same theoretical framework called the Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory, or PVEST. “It looks at the whole life process and vulnerabilities that students have coming into it, the kinds of stressors that they deal with, how do they cope with the stress, and then the emerging identity that comes out of it … and then it looks at the success of the student,” Muldrow said. “It looks at the whole student.”

His own project will be figuring out how to scale a scientific literacy curriculum he developed and implemented at Morehouse and public high schools, which takes students through a simulation of a research lab, where

they can see how scientific research works and develop ways to handle the anxieties that can come with feeling underprepared.

Another one of the projects, led by Dr. Danielle Dickens, a psychology professor at Spelman College, will focus on the intersectional identities of STEM students at HBCUs, addressing questions like, “A Black woman student at an HBCU that’s majoring in STEM, what is the extent to which her race, gender and even science identity integrate with one another?”

“Whether we’re looking at the barriers to retention in STEM among Black students or the successes, sometimes we forget to look within the group,” Dickens said. “So, I think it’s important to look at these intersecting identities as it relates to race, but also gender and class

and sexual orientation among other identities to see how all those identities impact one’s experiences in STEM.” In addition to her project, which will be a part of the “analytic hub,” the educational research component of the center, Dickens will also be leading social science research seminars, training faculty members from other HBCUs to analyze their own STEM programs through a holistic social science lens, with the goal that scholars ultimately publish their findings.

Hodge hopes the initiative will highlight the work HBCUs are doing to encourage Black students’ participation in STEM. Morehouse, for example, is the country’s top producer of Black men who go on to earn doctorates in STEM fields. He believes all colleges can learn from HBCUs’ educational approach.

“I think it’s critically important that we approach our student from an asset-based perspective and not a deficit-based perspective,” Hodge said. “We tend to identify the genius that is within each student and ignite that genius. We don’t teach them that they need to be rebuilt in some kind of way.”

It worked for Muldrow, and he wants to see it work for future Black students in STEM, as well.

In his scientific literacy courses, he hears so many “stories of marginalization,” he said, stories where Black students realize they’re underprepared for what they want to study in college.

But he and his colleagues tell them, “You have just as much intelligence, and you can grow just as much intellectually. You just got to know the work you’ve got to put in beforehand. These are all students that have great ambitions. When you tell them, this is what’s happening, this is where you are, this is the history, they rise to the occasion.”

For so many students, “that’s missing,” he said. “That takes funds, that takes commitment.”

American Lung Association announces anti-vaping push State lawmaker touts need for better education on e-cigarettes

Springfield — The American Lung Association recently announced a “comprehensive” plan to tackle electronic tobacco use by the nation’s high schoolers.

Education, community advocacy and research are the main pillars of the association’s strategy and are methods used by tobacco opponents to curb traditional cigarette use among the age group.

“As the school year resumes, more students may experience social pres-

sure to vape, while others may begin to vape in response to stress, including stress related to COVID-19,” Kristina Hamilton, the American Lung Association’s advocacy director, said in a written statement. “We’re already facing what the surgeon general refers to as a ‘youth vaping epidemic.’”

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey found half of youth in the U.S. used an e-cigarette, vape pen or hookah in 2019. That trend of increasing electronic tobacco use is on par with Illinois high school student usage.

Approximately 8,000 students begin using a vape pen every day, the

CDC found, resulting in more than one in four high schoolers and one in 10 middle schoolers vaping at least once per month.

The Lung Association launched a public awareness campaign to inform parents and adult leaders about e-cigarette facts and trends as well as strategies for speaking with students about why they should not use such products.

Officials also announced a VapeFree Schools initiative “to help school administrators and educators address the surge of youth vaping through guidance in implementing a comprehensive tobacco use policy,” www.citizennewspapergroup.com

according to the association.

Instead of suspension, it suggests educators develop a substitute discipline policy and offer a tobacco cessation program.

“Our communities need support, and...the American Lung Association is proud to offer Illinois schools, parents and students proven approaches to end youth vaping in our communities and state,” Hamilton said in a written statement.

The advocacy group also said it plans to promote legislation to include electronic tobacco products in the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which bans smoking in virtually all public places.

State Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat from Lake Forest, said she will introduce a measure in the 2021 legislative session to encourage youth to avoid e-tobacco products.

“We were doing so well on changing the culture of smoking, and now we have gone backward — especially the younger generation,” she said in a written statement. “While the implementation of Tobacco 21 was a major step forward in limiting the availability to tobacco products to children, there must be more education about the negative effects of e-cigarettes, so kids don’t seek to get these products in illegal ways.”

IBM Study: Consumers’ COVID-19 outlook, optimism and preferences vary greatly across generations and geographies The August findings of an ongoing IBM (NYSE: IBM) Institute for Business Value (IBV) survey of global consumers reveal that across the globe individuals remain highly concerned about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their daily lives, but there are clear differences in outlook across age groups and countries.

The survey of more than 14,500 adults across Brazil, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, showed that due to the pandemic, individuals are making marked changes in how they work, shop and live – new habits that may not shift dramatically even once a vaccine becomes available.

“Our data tells us that many individuals are looking for more transparency and flexibility from their employers as they navigate this great uncertainty caused by the pandemic,” said Jesus Mantas, senior managing partner, IBM Services.

“Organizations need to focus on building trust with their workforce and customers, and agility to deliver solutions that meet them where they are.”

Global optimism remains stagnant with concerns divided among generations and countries Consumers globally report high levels of concern about the pandemic and its impact on their lives. The overwhelming majority of global respondents said they believe we will see more pandemic events like this in the future. 69% of Americans surveyed expressed concern about a second wave hitting later in 2020, while in the UK, Mexico, Spain and Brazil, at least three in four respondents expressed similar views.

70% of surveyed Americans said COVID-19 has made them more concerned about the safety and health of themselves and their families, consistent with July. 88% of Brazilians and 54% of Germans surveyed agreed.

There is consumer optimism, however, with one-third of responding Americans who believe the U.S. economy will recover in 2021.

Compared to other countries, respondents in India and China were the most optimistic about their national economies recovering in 2020.

Globally, the data suggest there is a generation gap. Consumers’ opinions about the impact of the pandemic vary widely across age groups: * 69% of millennials (ages 25-39) are concerned about their job security and 60% said the pandemic has taken a toll on their mental health, higher than all other age groups. * Baby Boomers (ages 55-70+) are the most pessimistic on economic recovery, with seven in ten reporting they believe their nation’s economy will continue to see an economic downturn or significant recession. * Generation Z (ages 18-24) is the most optimistic about the economy, with more than half noting they believe the economy will recover to its pre-COVID-19 state in the next few months.

Many employees have high expectations for transparency and flexibility from their employers In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than half (52%) of Americans surveyed

reported that they trust their employer. At the same time, their expectations about the measures needed to feel comfortable returning to a workplace remained high across August and July. 64% of Americans surveyed said employers need to clearly communicate what is being done to sanitize the workplace (63% in July), and more than half indicated interest in technology-driven solutions like systems for reserving spaces to avoid crowded ‘hot spots’ in the workplace.

Some participating consumers seem to be feeling the fatigue of “working from home” feeling more like “living at work.” The percentage of responding Americans indicating they would like to continue to work remotely at least occasionally declined from more than 80% in July to 67% in August, and half said they wanted remote work to be their primary way of working (down 15 points from July). India had the highest percentage (33%) of respondents preferring to exclusively work remotely.

Roughly one in three Americans surveyed cited mental health as the number one factor affecting their preference for their future working environment; nearly half of respondents in India and Brazil agreed.

Other U.S. findings among those surveyed: * Skills: Nearly one in three Americans report taking more online training or education as a result of COVID-19. * Back to school: More than half of Americans are worried that sending students back in person will lead to further outbreaks. At the same time, four in ten are concerned that their child(ren) will fall behind in their education if schools do not reopen this year. 47% of feel strongly that their employer should provide special accommodations for childcare needs (41% in July).

New patterns for shopping and visiting venues in the U.S. reveal opportunities for businesses to provide options that meet consumers where they are During the pandemic, American consumers have been experimenting with new types of shopping services and tools – even across the technological generation gap. 44% of those surveyed have tried or would like to try placing an order via mobile app (30% pre-pandemic), 46% ordering online with curbside pickup (18% pre-pandemic), and 30% virtually trying on an outfit (9% pre-pandemic).

But almost seven in ten Americans surveyed believe a COVID-19 vaccine will not be available until 2021 or later, and even when a vaccine is available, many consumers are not sure if they will be comfortable visiting many types of venues. Only 27% will definitely visit a shopping mall once a vaccine is available, 21% a movie theater and 18% a live sporting event.

The IBV has surveyed more than 68,000 consumers since April and plans to continue polling the public in the months ahead. Later this fall, the IBV plans to release a report examining how more than 3,500 C-Suite executives globally are transforming their business to survive and thrive in the new normal across industries such as banking, retail, healthcare and technology.

NEWS Ice Cube Collaborates With Iconic Artist And Activist, Shepard Fairey, To Create Logo For ‘A Contract with Black America’ In the wake of outcries against racial injustice, inequality and civil unrest in the United States, Ice Cube and American artist, Shepard Fairey, have revealed the ‘A Contract with Black America’ logo.

“It was incredible to work with Shepard on this logo. I appreciate him donating his time to this cause, we both believe that the pen is mightier than the sword,” says Ice Cube.

‘A Contract with Black America’ was drafted following the death of George Floyd and recognition that the wealth gap between Black and White families is an

unacceptable 10-1.

After reflecting on the impact of these events on not only himself, but the country as a whole, Ice Cube harnessed that energy to help develop a plan to help Black Americans move forward.

Walt Disney World Resort Reimagines Holiday Traditions in 2020 A reimagined holiday celebration will begin Nov. 6, 2020, at Walt Disney World Resort, with the four theme parks, Disney Springs and Disney resort hotels decked for the season. Through Dec. 30, guests will discover seasonal food and drinks at The Most Magical Place on Earth, as well as special merchandise and enchanting new entertainment experiences.

When night falls at Magic Kingdom Park, projection effects will transform Cinderella Castle with a kaleidoscope of designs, including a whimsical Christmas sweater and a regal overlay of red, green and gold ornamentation. The iconic castle will provide a colorful background for guests seeking a magical holiday portrait.
