CODEVERSE PARTNERS WITH GIRL SCOUTS TO LAUNCH ALL-GIRLS CODING PROGRAM Codeverse is officially one step closer to their mission to “teach a billion kids to code.” The world’s first fully interactive school and educational tech platform recently announced that the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana’s out-of-school-time program, GirlSpace, has granted them a $45,000 scholarship to give Girl Scouts in low-income neighborhoods the chance to learn coding this fall at the Codeverse Lincoln Park location (819 W. Eastman St., Chicago).

GirlSpace is a year-round out-of-school-time program offered by the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, which provides girls a safe, structured and supportive learning environment that empowers them with essential skills for success in school and life – thus, a natural pairing for Codeverse.

SURPRISE MEDICAL BILLS: CONSUMERS RARELY GET UP-FRONT ESTIMATES OF MEDICAL COSTS, ACCORDING TO EHEALTH SURVEY eHealth has released results from a survey showing that most consumers are rarely or never advised of their projected costs when receiving medical care. It also found that few consumers can afford to pay their annual deductible. The survey of consumers who purchased Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage at eHealth was conducted on a voluntary basis in July 2019. A total of 801 responses were collected.

Highlights of the survey report that consumers do not get an up-front estimate of costs: A majority (58%) said they are “rarely” or “never” given an up-front estimate of costs before receiving medical care and most have to ask for cost estimates. Of those who received estimates, 70% had to ask their medical care provider for the estimate; 30% were offered an estimate without asking. Forty-four percent of those given an up-front cost estimate said their final costs exceeded that estimate, according to the survey.

ILLINOIS COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES (ILLINOIS CASA) RECEIVES STATE FUNDING FOR THE FIRST TIME Illinois CASA has been awarded a $2,885,000.00 in State funding. This is the first time in Illinois CASA’s 26 years of operation that they have received any state funding. CASA stands for court appointed special advocate. A CASA is a trained, community volunteer who advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are involved with the child welfare system. This funding will be split between thirty-one local programs across Illinois to expand their programing so more kids who have experienced child abuse or neglect can have a specially trained Court Appointed Special Advocate assigned to their case. In addition, there will be money to go into some counties to open new CASA programs to help serve the over 2,000 survivors who do not currently have access to a CASA program.

Executive Director Mari Christopherson stated, “This funding means that more children across Illinois do not have to go through the court process alone. We applaud the Governor in supporting a program that works.”

An American telecommunications conglomerate, ComCast, recently announced that it would be expanding eligibility for its Internet Essentials program which offers discounted internet-access to qualifying low-income households across the nation and specifically in Chicago.

In addition to expanding Internet Essentials, ComCast also announced it would be investing in Chicago Public Libraries to support the development of Experience Labs at several branch locations.

“If you think about how we now operate as a community, as a society, and ultimately how we interact with one another, if you don’t have access to the internet, then you’re missing out on economic opportunity. Additionally, our educational system is completely aligned toward either online learning or using digital resources to access report cards and do research,” said Matthew Summy, regional vice president of external affairs for ComCast.

With this in mind, ComCast launched the Internet Essentials program eight years ago to provide high-speed internet access at a

low cost for qualifying households.

Most recently, the program has been expanded to offer assistance to those who are already participating in federal assistance programs such as, Medicaid, public housing assistance, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the National School Lunch Program, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, Illinois residents receiving Federal Pell Grants, anyone receiving a Veterans Affairs pension, and anyone receiving Tribal assistance.

“What we want, ultimately, is for as many people as possible to have the opportunity to have high-speed internet access at home so they can effectively participate in economic, educational, and other opportunities that come with that service,” said Summy. “Internet Essentials is highly unique in that it’s a comprehensive approach to take away, or remove, those barriers by offering affordable internet services and subsidized computers.”

In addition to announcing the expansion of Internet Essentials to allow even more

households to qualify for the program, ComCast also announced it would be investing in Chicago Public Libraries. The financial donation from ComCast will support the creation of eight new Experience Labs at branch libraries in Chicago, according to Summy.

“We are supporting community based digital literacy and skills-based training programs to help get individuals to be not only comfortable with the technological tool that is the internet, but also to get the most out of it once they understand the fundamentals and make it part of their lives for banking, accessing public services, advancing in education, or searching for a job,” said Summy.

ComCast has already funded Experience Labs in three Chicago Public Libraries and while each differs slightly based on the needs of the branch they all have similar equipment that can range from computers to 3D printers, according to Summy.

“These resources will help the Chicago Public Library expand the availability and capacity of their programs and ultimately teach digital skills,” said Summy.

Johnson & Johnson Signs the Military Spouse Employment Partnership to Help Service Member Spouses Build Careers According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), 77% of people who have a spouse in the military want—or need— work. But they face some unique statistical obstacles: Military spouses contend with a 24% unemployment rate and a 25% wage gap compared to people whose partners aren’t in the services.

Stats like these are why Johnson & Johnson just signed an agreement with the DOD called the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP).

The goal: help people overcome career-building obstacles—such as frequent moves or gaps in employment history—that can arise when you’re married to a service member.

As part of this agreement, Johnson & Johnson pledges to help increase employment opportunities for military spouses at its operating companies by posting U.S. job listings on the MSEP portal by the fall of 2019.

The company also vows to promote talent development; ensure pay equity for all military spouses; and support their unique professional needs, even if they need to relocate for their spouse’s assignment.

New Strategic Partnership Increases Arts Opportunities For South Loop Community The Old Town School of Folk Music and Columbia College Chicago recently announced a strategic long-term partnership that will increase arts programming for all ages in the growing South Loop community.

Effective September 1, 2019, the Old Town School will assume responsibility for the South Loop-based Sherwood Community Music School, 1312 S. Michigan Avenue, which merged with Columbia in July 2007. Starting with the Fall session, Old Town School of Folk Music at Columbia College Chicago will manage existing Sherwood School individual music instruction in addition to launching its celebrated Wiggleworms® early childhood music program (which will replace the current Music Together early childhood offering). In January 2020, Old Town School will roll out its traditional group guitar and other signature Old Town School programming, increasing arts opportunities for South Loop residents and Chicagoans of all ages.

“We are very excited to partner with Columbia to strengthen community music, arts and dance programming in the South Loop and appreciate Columbia leadership’s vision to make this happen. This is an important step in the Old Town School’s long-term strategic plan to serve more people in their neighborhoods throughout Chicago—the greatest music city in the country,” said Old Town School CEO Jim Newcomb.

The Sherwood School specializes in conservatory-style music programs, including Suzuki violin, alongside private lessons for all ages which will complement Old Town School’s broad offerings of group classes for adults, teens

and children, Wiggleworms early childhood programs and many other classes taught in the folk tradition. This partnership will allow Sherwood faculty the opportunity to keep working with their students while providing new opportunities for current Old Town School faculty and Columbia students including internships and opportunities for Columbia music, arts management and communication students.

Added Columbia College School of Fine and Performing Arts Interim Dean Rosita Sands, “Old Town School’s focus on the teaching and programming of a diverse body of music styles and genres provides great synergy with our music program’s focus on contemporary, urban, jazz and popular music forms. Old Town School will host a series of public open house events tentatively scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 10 from 5-8 p.m. at the Sherwood campus to introduce the Old Town School community members to the South Loop neighborhood. Current Sherwood students should expect continuing classes to begin the week of September 15. More details about the transition and upcoming programming will be provided on oldtownschool.org in the coming weeks.

Back to School, Back to Work – But First Get a Permit School either has or is about to start for Illinois students. Lots of those young people will do more than homework. They’ll get a job. And if you’re under 16 years old and you get a job, you also need to get a work permit.

Minors who are 14 or 15 may work in Illinois, but they must first obtain an employment certificate. Illinois’ child labor law is designed to protect the physical safety of children on the job as well as to make their education a priority.

“It’s very admirable to see young people who want to go to work, but child labor laws are necessary to make sure kids stay safe and don’t let their jobs get in the way of their school work,” said Michael Kleinik, director of the Illinois Department of Labor.

Fourteen- and 15-year-olds seeking employment need to start by getting a letter of intent to hire from their prospective employer. The

The young person and a parent or guardian must take the letter to their school or school district office to request an employment certif-

Employers who employ teens under 16 without having a work permit on the premises are subject to fines by the Department of Labor.

Children 14 and 15 years of age may work up to three hours per school day and up to 24 hours per week when school is in session. The combined hours of school and work cannot exceed eight hours per day. When school is not in session – summer vacations, holidays and weekends – the restrictions are no more than eight hours per day, no more than six days per week and no more than 48 hours per week.

be extended to 9 p.m.

Some exceptions to the Illinois Child Labor Law do exist. The law does not apply to the sale and delivery of magazines and newspaper outside the hours that school is in attendance.

Likewise, jobs in private homes such as baby-sitting or yard work are exceptions and do not require a work permit.

The law also seeks to keep younger workers safe. It prohibits 14- and 15-year-olds from working in businesses where alcohol is served, on construction jobs, at service stations and other places that might include dangerous work or machinery.

Survey: 96% Of Managers Say Their Staff Are Experiencing Some Degree Of Burnout The country is nearly at full employment, but U.S. workers may also be approaching full burnout. On the heels of the World Health Organization defining it as a syndrome resulting from workplace stress, a recent survey from staffing firm Accountemps found that nearly all senior managers (96%) believe their team members are experiencing some degree of burnout. In a separate survey, 91% of workers said they are at least somewhat burned out.

Senior managers were asked to report the level of burnout among employees on a scale of 1 (not at all burned out) to 10 (completely burned out), and the average was 5.6. One in 5 respondents rated their team’s burnout level 8 or higher. Workers also cited an average burnout level of 5.6, with more than a quarter of respondents (28%) falling within the 8 to 10 range.

Workers and managers alike seem to agree burnout is an issue, but they don’t see eye to eye on the main reason. When given a list of factors that may be contributing to employee burnout, workers ranked constant interruptions first, while senior managers believed unmanageable workloads were the biggest issue for their teams.

“Employees are often OK with working hard if they know that their efforts will not go

unnoticed by their employers and it helps them advance their careers,” said Michael Steinitz, senior executive director of Accountemps, a division of Robert Half. “However, maintaining high productivity cannot come at the expense of staff members’ well-being and engagement.”

Steinitz offered advice for organizations facing staffing challenges: “Managers need to identify responsibilities that can be reassigned or put on hold. They can also bring in temporary professionals to alleviate heavy workloads, support day-to-day needs and assist with projects requiring specialized skills. Companies that don’t take steps to prevent employee burnout could drive top performers away and find themselves in a bigger pinch.”

Expo Chicago Partners With Citywide Cultural Institutions For Annual Expo Art Week EXPO CHICAGO, The International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, recently announced the eighth annual EXPO ART WEEK, September 16 – 22, 2019. Stony Island Arts Bank In The Absence of Light: Gesture, Humor and Resistance in The Black Aesthetic Selections from the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection Bringing together artistic practices that not only reveal some sense of interiority, but

by their very nature, reflect distance through laughter, painting gesture and isolation—the Rebuild Foundation partnered with Beth Rudin DeWoody to share the works of over 20 of today’s most important practitioners within the contemporary art world. Navy Pier The Ship of Tolerance The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Foundation presents The Ship of Tolerance, a multidimensional project, featuring a largescale installation of a ship located in Polk Bros.

When it comes to personal finance, however, young people don’t need to learn their lessons the hard way.

More Families Have a Plan to Pay for College (StatePoint) College may be getting more expensive, but new research suggests that more families are preparing to meet those costs one way or another.

Eighty percent of families say they are confident in how they paid for college last year, and nearly half have a plan to pay for all years of college, according to “How America Pays for College 2019,” a recent study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company.

All this preparation could be attributed to the fact that the overwhelming majority of families recognize the value of higher education, with 90 percent of families agreeing college is an investment.

“The individual and socio-economic benefits of a college education are clear, so it’s particularly gratifying to see that families continue to view college as a worthwhile investment,” says Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. On average, families report spending

$26,226 on college in academic year 201819, with a sizeable portion of costs -- 43 percent -- covered out-of-pocket through income and savings.

Scholarships, grants, and gifts -- used by 82 percent of families -- covered 33 percent of costs, and that “free money” can be especially important, both logistically and psychologically, opening doors to opportunities that would be otherwise unavailable and even making a difference in the way students view the college experience as a whole.

The study also found that while borrowing covered 24 percent of overall college costs, 57 percent of the families who borrowed to pay for college say they had always planned to do so as part of their paying-for-college strategy. What’s more, many families are getting a head start on paying their loans back, with 41 percent making payments on student loans while the student is in school.

Families are being proactive in other ways, too. Seventy-seven percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2018-
