Grace and Peace Revive Center, Intentional Sports and By the Hand Club for Kids, have partnered with Chicago Fire Foundation and Jason and Verdana Heyward to create a $31 million professional level sports, education, and wellness campus in North Austin.

John Zayas is the Senior Pastor at Grace and Peace and CEO and founder of the Revive Center. Zayas discovered with the pandemic and riots on the West side there were not enough resources. The Revive Center has been located at 1856 N. Leclaire for 14 years. The surveys showed that there weren’t any activities for community residents ages 15-22.

The 150,000 square foot campus was the opportunity to bring the wraparound services that Grace and Peace provides, along with the educational services, By the Hand Club for Kids, and with the sports training of Intentional Sports together in one place.

“We felt like if this campus can be done right, where it looks toward the future and helps people, we can make an impact on the West side,” he said. “We believe that this partnership is the key to everything. Too many organizations are doing it by themselves, and they can only reach a certain destination or destiny.”

for opportunities to have a greater impact on the lives of children and their families. By the Hand Club for Kids has five locations throughout Chicago, including a location at Kinzie and Laramie, where they serve 800 children. The new campus will be by the hand Club for Kids’ sixth location.

“Two miles in a city like Chicago is like going into a completely new neighborhood,” she said. “Our goal is to serve thousands of kids and we have the opportunity to serve more kids at this location.”

Andy McDermott, of Intentional Sports, was brought in last summer to build the sport program for the campus. There will be football, volleyball, baseball, basketball, esports, character building and leadership, as well as external programs – Adult Night Leagues and camps.

“None of us are here to just create a sports center and charge people and make money. That’s not why we’re all here. We’re all here because there’s a need, where kids around here and other cities and urban centers around the country aren’t getting the same opportunities as kids in Lake Forest or Barrington or Scottsdale …,” he said. “I just feel like all kids deserve to learn a sport, to fall in love with a sport and learn the lessons, I did when I was five years old.”

McDermott has started doing soccer clinics in the neighborhood and through talking to the children who participate found there is a need for a safe space for the young

people in the community. He wanted to bring a professional level training center that is a safe space the young people could come to everyday.

Chicago Fire Foundation will build a permanent location on the campus. It will offer 20 free hours of soccer programming each week, regardless of their socioeconomic status. It will include training from professional level trainers and coaches.

“For us as a club and a foundation, it’s extremely important to give back to the community. We are looking to serve all 77 neighborhoods across Chicago. We knew this would provide more access and safe places to play for a community that needs it,” said Jessica Yavitz, executive director of the Chicago Fire Foundation.

The Jason Heyward Baseball Academy will also be located on the campus. Heyward who plays for the Chicago Cubs wanted to serve as an example of what baseball looks like and where baseball brought him, to Chicago.

“It looks like people are coming together out of nowhere. If you would have told me when I started playing this game at 5-years old that I would have an opportunity to reach back into a community, to leave a legacy off the baseball diamond. Yes, winning a championship on the field, but I feel like this is a life championship,” he said.

Walgreens and CORE served as the official partners during the two-day event and administered 77 vaccinations and 50 COVID-19 tests, respectively. AKA’s Mammography Mobile Unit provided free mammograms to 82 women while 63 HIV tests were administered by the South Side Help Center. The Community Blood Center also received blood donations from 19 residents.

“Coming home to Chicago was exciting, but more importantly, it was rewarding and embodied everything that we have stood for since 1908 – service. We were able to provide much-needed health services to our community,” said Alpha Kappa Alpha International President & CEO Dr. Glenda Glover. “COVID-19 is still very real, and Black people, in particular, are behind the rest of the population in terms of receiving the vaccination. We are on a mission to change that statistic, and we are so proud that we have partners like Walgreens and CORE to help us in reversing the numbers.

We aim to save at least one life through our service in the community. In Chicago, we can thankfully say we made a

difference in the lives of hundreds through vaccinations, mammograms, and other health screenings.”

AKA has traveled the country with Pop-Up Health Programs through the organization’s international community service initiative. The events, held recently in Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri as well as the Mississippi Delta, have addressed the needs of underserved communities and provided access to vaccines, health services, and more.

“At Walgreens, we are committed to the equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. That’s why we were delighted to partner with Alpha Kappa Alpha once again, this time in Chicago – also our home, to aid in providing access to the vaccine to underserved communities right within their community,” said Alethia Jackson, Vice President, Federal Government Relations and Chair of the COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Taskforce at Walgreens. “Quality care and access to services is essential to living a healthy life. COVID-19 has affected Black and Brown communities in unimaginable ways.

The pop-up health events took place at Imani Village and at Jeffrey Plaza/Local Market, both located on the South Side of Chicago. Participating residents were treated to the sounds of DJ Mikal Clay as well as coffee, water, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

“It was the perfect beginning to our 69th Boule, which was unfortunately put on hold last year due to the pandemic.

So, we combined our Boule with our Leadership Conference for the first time virtually,” said Dr. Glover. “What better way to commemorate what was an extraordinary year than with extraordinary service to the community. AKA is never deterred no matter what the circumstances are. The pandemic created a need for vaccines, and we combined that with other crucial health services that were free of charge to residents. It was truly a momentous occasion, and we are grateful for our partners that aided in being servants for our community.”

Major Illinois airports will directly receive and spend federal funding thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Christopher Belt (DSwansea) that was signed into law Friday.

The new law allows Illinois airports that have 10,000 or more patrons per year to directly receive and spend federal funding. Under the current law, federal funding goes to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s aeronautics division to distribute to airports across the state, with the exception of O’Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago.

“This will give the major airports in Illinois the authority to make their own financial decisions in a timely manner,” Belt said. “This should help IDOT get these important projects done faster and reduce a considerable backlog.”

Currently, IDOT must approve all planning, construction, development and improvements to hangars. The approval process for these contracts has caused significant delays, and this measure would take the pressure off of IDOT and allow individual airports to move forward with projects on their own timelines.

“Larger airports in Illinois have the resources to manage the funding and make necessary decisions for the projects,” Belt said. “It’s important we include all major airports in the state, not just O’Hare and Midway, to speed up the approval process.”

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2022.

State Senator Robert Peters Signs New Legislation Benefiting Chicgao Public Schools Recently celebrated the signing of legislation he sponsored that would allow local school councils of Chicago Public Schools to fill vacancies in almost any situation under the Peters Law. “Parents, students and other members of the community have the right to have a say in how the schools in their area are run, and local school councils are how that right is realized,” Peters said. “If a small technical rule prevents them from being able to meet, then they need to have the recourse to fix that issue, and this law accomplishes this.”

In general, a local school council is not prevented from filling its own vacancies; however, when membership drops below the minimum number required to start a meeting, LSCs often find their hands tied. Senate Bill 652 lowers the minimum number of member required from seven to four so that vacancies can always be filled – even in situations with a large number of vacancies.

“We’re coming out of a global pandemic that put the future of public education into a state of uncertainty, so it’s extremely important that local school councils are still able to meet and make decisions about how schools are run,” Peters said.

The new law is effective immediately. Earlier in the year, it had passed both chambers of the General Assembly with no opposition.

Senator Martwick Law Will Strengthen Chicago Park District Pension System State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) sponsored a new law that would help in securing the future of the pension system of the Chicago Park District by requiring it to follow expert recommendations, ensuring park district employees receive the money they’re owed in retirement.

“Many people rely on their pensions for financial security later in life,” Martwick said. “Ensuring the Chicago Park District pays its pensions according to industry standards will help it get back on track and ensure its employees have the funds necessary to retire.”

House Bill 417 eliminates the “multiplier” employee contribution method and instead mandates actuarially required payments be made based on real actuarial calculations by 2024. This law also provides a payment ramp for the Chicago Park District, which requires a $40 million employer contribution in 2021.

It also permits the district to issue up to $250 million in pension obligation bonds.

“Park district employees work hard and deserve to collect the pensions they’ve earned,” Martwick said. “Instead of kicking the can down the road on the pension funding problem, we’re fixing it now.”

The new law was signed by the governor on Friday and takes effect immediately.

Baker, Adegoke Steve Colson and Rudresh Mahanthappa The American Composers Forum (ACF) is proud to announce the culminating event of its two-year partnership with the Chicagobased, internationally-renowned Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and its Great Black Music Ensemble: a concert celebrating the 55th anniversary of AACM, taking place at AACM’s long-time partner the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts (915 E. 60th Street) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30. Illinois Senator Mattie Hunter Hosted Her 17th Annual Family Health And Fitness Fair

This past weekend, State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) hosted her 17th annual family health and fitness fair, which featured health screenings, giveaways, and live entertainment, among many other activities.

“I am glad that we had such a good turnout, and that attendees and vendors followed COVID-19 safety protocols,” Hunter said. “We had a good time while staying safe and healthy.”

In 2003, Hunter hosted her first health fair. After several successful years, she partnered with the Illinois Institute of Technology, and they’ve teamed up to offer free services like health screenings, school supplies, and food for more than a decade. This year, Hunter and IIT added COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, as well as back-to-school haircuts and braiding, to the list of important services offered to area residents.

In addition, the Institute for Positive Living, ComEd, Social Change, TASC, Representative Sonya Harper (D-Chicago) and Representative Lamont Robinson (D-Chicago) were among the long list of sponsors for Saturday’s event.

Nearly 80 vendors participated at the fair, which is the most in the event’s history.

Live entertainment included performances by the World Champion Jesse White Tumblers, PKay Hula Hoops, Fre2Dance Line Dancers, Dr. Obari Cartman and Ayinde Cartman African Drums.

There was also a flower ceremony for essential workers and victims of cancers and violence.

“It’s been a rough year, and I was happy we were able to have an event that brings people joy and happiness,” Hunter said. “I hope that everyone had a good time, and I can’t wait to do it all again next year.
