NEWS briefly CARLTON W. LENOIR, SR., NAMED CHICAGO TEACHERS’ PENSION FUND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Carlton W. Lenoir, Sr., has been named Executive Director of the Chicago Teachers’ Pension Fund (CTPF or the Fund).

His appointment will be effective on August 2. Lenoir was the Chief Benefits Officer at Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System for the last five years. A national search was conducted by EFL Associates.

A results-oriented pension fund professional with over 32 years of executive and operational experience, Lenoir began his CTPF career as an Active Accounts Counselor and worked his way up to a management position.

He went on to hold leadership roles with public pension plans in Georgia and Illinois. His experience includes all phases of public pension fund administration, including the implementation of three enterprise-wide pension administration systems over an l8-year period.

A graduate of Whitney M. Young High School, Lenoir earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from American Intercontinental University and a J.D. from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

“I have always had a desire to serve the public school system.

It is where I got my start and that played a major role in my career development. When I left CTPF in 2005, I believe it was to prepare for this opportunity,” stated Executive Director Carlton W. OBAMA FOUNDATION’S MY BROTHER’S KEEPER ALLIANCE YOUTH MAKE DREAMS REALITY IN MONTANA Youth from the South Side of Chicago had the opportunity to make their dreams a reality over the Independence Day weekend. Five young men from the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance joined top media company, Turner Sports, for its sports Emmy-nominated premier live golf event series, Capital One’s The Match, in Montana.

The event featured top athletes, including Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Phil Mickelson. The young men had a one-of-akind opportunity to shadow Turner experts, getting hands-on experience in public relations, photography, talent relations, and production, among other roles.

Baltacesar Salinas, one of the youth who attended the weekend event and who is involved in La Villita Basketball with New Life Centers, a MBK Alliance seed community, said “New Life Centers, and the mentorship provided through the MBK Alliance support, has provided a safe place for the youth in my community and has nourished the younger generation to become the future of tomorrow.”

My Brother’s Keeper launched in 2014 in the Obama White House to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color. Today, the work continues through the Obama Foundation and young men like Balatcesar.

But, Ford said, because of the death of Chadwick Boseman, he wanted to get the screening. Ford received a Prostate Cancer diagnosis and underwent treatment. Now, he is encouraging other Black men to get screened.

“When you find out that you have prostate cancer, it’s one thing but when you find out how severe and how aggressive it is, its another thing,” said Ford, who represents the 8th District, which covers Austin, Oak Park, LaGrange, Berwyn, LaGrange Park, parts of Western Springs and Brookfield. “Right away, it’s a shock to have the big diagnosis of Cancer. You don’t want to be told by a doctor that you have cancer.” Ford said it is important for men to stay close to a doctor. He said it could have been a death sentence for him if he had not gotten the early diagnosis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African American men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men, they are more than twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than other men, and they get prostate cancer at a younger age African American men tend to have more advanced disease when found, and tend

to have a more severe type of prostate cancer than other men.

Ford said science doesn’t really include Black people in recommendations. He said Black men need to advocate for themselves to get these screenings. He said if you have insurance, the screenings are covered.

“I would tell men, the science for the majority population says that you probably shouldn’t get a screening until you’re 55, but the doctor told me that at 48, it appears I could’ve had prostate cancer for 10 years, because it was aggressive,” he said. “So, at 48, there is a likelihood that I had prostate cancer growing in me as early as 38. And, had I waited for the science to tell me to wait until I was 55, it would’ve been a death sentence.”

Ford said it is important for men to realize that there are doctors that prescribe to the mainstream recommendations. He said men don’t have to listen to them, he encouraged them to say, “this is what I want.”

“Black men die at a rate of two-to-one to white males. And, that’s where the disparity comes in, because Black men are diagnosed later than white men. Ford reiterated, that’s why Black men die twoto-one to white men,” he stated. “So, if you simply become aware and get your diagnosis, Black men won’t die at that rate.”

Ford said his primary care physician believed in the science of mainstream teaching. He said most doctors believe the recommendation that a prostate can-

cer screening should happen at age 55.

But, Ford said by advocating himself, he told the doctor he wanted the screening done. Ford said he is cancer free.

“Science is really amazing, for women with breast cancer, early detection saves lives. it keeps the cancer from growing and metastasizing. Science is so good, that we can catch it, destroy it and live a healthy life,” he said.

Ford said critical race theory will help all professions that work with people get rid of their biases. He said when it comes to health care, doctors are trained by a biased institution and raised in a biased family setting, and they bring their life experience to their profession. He said in most cases, it is thought that Black people are predisposed to certain diseases.

“That’s not true, Black people could actually live longer lives, if we advocate and tell the doctors that we’re going to advocate for ourselves. And, we have to advocate for better science including Black people in these clinical trials,” he said, adding it could eliminate some health disparities. “The disparities come because science ignores Black health.”

Ford said he had surgery Jan. 28. He was able to do a 5K on Feb. 28, and in June, did a 50-mile bike ride.

“That right there is a blessing and what it tells me is early detection prevents, saves lives and helps you recover faster.

I’m recovered and that’s a blessing to know I’m cancer free,” he said. “I wanted to announce I had cancer and I beat it.”

ComEd Goats Take Break from Managing Vegetation to Cruise on the Chicago River ComEd’s four-legged employees took a break from eating vegetation under power lines in Pekin, Ill., for a boat cruise on the Chicago River.

Twenty goats joined ComEd employees this week to take in downtown views from the river and educate customers about ComEd’s goat vegetation management program.

“ComEd was excited to bring the goats to Chicago this year to show one of our innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure reliable power for families and businesses,” said Michelle Blaise, senior vice president of technical services at ComEd. “The goats work hard to clear vegetation in hard-to-reach places, helping us to prevent power outages in an environmentally-friendly way. If anyone deserves a break, it’s them.”

The ComEd goats cruised the Chicago River between the DuSable Bridge and LaSalle Street Bridge on Wednesday, July 7, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Since 2019, ComEd has enlisted the support of more than 200 goats to help clear vegetation in Pekin, Ill., in terrain that is difficult to access. The goats’ “work” helps ComEd avoid power outages and service disruptions often caused by overgrown www.citizennewspapergroup.com

vegetation near power lines. Using goats cuts the cost and time required to clear the vegetation by more than half, reduces safety risks to workers and is an ecofriendly alternative.

The goats are on loan to ComEd from goat grazing company Goats on the Go. After clearing 13 acres of land last year, ComEd’s goats are continuing the hard work this summer through the month of July.

How to Navigate Family Feelings About Returning to School Family Features - Whether it’s your child’s first day of kindergarten or the start of middle school, back-to-school season can bring a range of feelings – from worry to excitement – for the entire family. This year may be more emotional as many families spent the better part of the past two school years at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s important to remember that even in the best of times, it’s normal for children to express feelings of sadness, isolation or stress,” said Tyreca Elliott, from KinderCare Learning Centers’ inclusion services team. “Learning how to address those feelings helps us build self-confidence, resilience and independence. What’s important is the way adults respond to children’s stress. Offering comfort, reassurance and assisting with problem solving will help children learn and grow from stress in a positive way.”

As an added bonus, Elliott said many of the most effective ways to help children learn to navigate their feelings work just as well with adults. Consider these three tips to help your children (and yourself) manage emotions during the transition back to school.

Plan ahead The fear of the unknown can be stressful. Children who aren’t able to clearly articulate their feelings likely won’t be able to make the connection between new, uncertain situations – like going to school and being around other people – and their feelings. Instead they may become overwhelmed by emotions, which might

Ask questions to help them determine why they feel particular feelings when they think about school then work together to solve potential issues. That could mean finding a way to meet your children’s teachers ahead of time, whether virtually or in-person, or practicing introducing themselves to classmates.

Build a consistent routine Routines can give children (and adults) a sense of security and structure, which in turn make it easier to cope with big emotions like stress and anxiety. Try to stay consistent, and if you need to make adjustments, talk them through with your children. Be sure to mention

key milestones instead of times, particularly if they can’t tell time yet. Make sure your children have opportunities to ask questions about any changes to routines. They may need reassurance before they’re ready to face something new.

Create special family moments As important as routine is, it’s just as important to prioritize quality time together. That could mean a vacation or something as simple as Saturday bike rides or Sunday morning pancakes. Plan a family outing or special time together to celebrate completing the first week of school. Family rituals and celebrations can give children and adults something to look forward to. Quality time together also helps families build resiliency.

Jesse White Issues Reminder: Electronic Automobile Insurance Verification Program Has Begun Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding drivers that electronic verification of automobile insurance has begun and vehicle owners who are unable to prove insurance will face a license plate suspension and $100 reinstatement fee.

Enforcement of the state’s mandatory insurance electronic verification program began on July 1, 2021. Insurance companies are working in conjunction with the Secretary of State’s office to confirm electronically that motorists have automobile insurance. The vast majority of vehicle owners will not have to do anything, as electronic verification of automobile insurance will be confirmed automatically.

“My office has led the effort to establish and implement an automobile insurance verification system online that uses innovations in technology to help reduce the number of Illinois motorists driving while uninsured,” said White. “The message is simple: if you don’t have auto insurance, get covered now. It is the law.”

POLITICAL Affairs

The program follows national standards established by the Insurance Industry Committee on Motor Vehicle Administration and is expected to reduce the number of Illinois motorists driving while uninsured. Under the new Illinois Insurance Verification System (ILIVS), vehicle owners’ automobile insurance will be verified electronically at least twice a year at random intervals to ensure that vehicle owners are complying with the state’s mandatory automobile liability insurance laws.

If electronic verifications are unsuccessful, the Secretary of State’s office will send a written request to the vehicle owner giving them the opportunity to prove they have insurance before suspending their vehicle registration. Vehicle owners must contact their insurance company or notify their insurance agent that they received a letter with a specific reference number from the Secretary of State. The insurance agent’s responsibil-

ity is to confirm electronically with the Secretary of State – through www.ILIVS. com – that the vehicle owner does in fact have automobile insurance on the verification date stated in the letter.

It is important to note that vehicle owners who receive the letter should NOT VISIT a Driver Services facility; instead, they should contact their insurance company or agent who can provide the necessary electronic proof of insurance needed to cancel the license plate suspension.

Vehicles owners who do not currently have automobile insurance must obtain insurance to avoid license plate suspension.

White chaired the Uninsured Motorist Verification Advisory Committee that worked with insurance companies, traffic safety advocates and members of the General Assembly. The advisory committee reviewed best practices and helped provide the guidelines used to establish legislation and program requirements.

The program will help students build knowledge and skills in engineering while helping them develop essential skills such as problem solving and critical thinking.

Leo Burnett Pilots Creative Boot Camp at Chicago State University In partnership with Marcus Graham Project, creative executives forge a fresh pathway for underrepresented talent; enrolled students secure internships within Publicis Groupe Five students from Chicago State University, Illinois’ sole four-year Predominantly Black Institution for higher education, began summer internships this week across Publicis Groupe, including at Leo Burnett Chicago, Arc Worldwide, and ThePub; and one of their classmates has accepted a full-time position at Publicis Health Media. The connection is the culmination of a decades-long partnership, and pro bono work through the Pencil Project, most recently with a boot camp creative curriculum during the Spring semester, with support from Marcus Graham Project.

“This boot camp provided

a proxy of what it’s like to work at an ad agency – not just land the job,” explains Aki Spicer, Chief Strategy Officer for Leo Burnett.

“We’ve made great strides with recruitment, but retention of diverse talent requires industry role models.”

As Aki explains the “radical empathy” that drives the agency’s work, he points to the gift of time and talent in addition to financial support – an “innovation of donation” with hands-on mentorship from creative leads.

NATIONAL NEWS Howard University Raises Over $3 Million for Golf Program Endowment During Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic Fundraiser NBA champion Stephen Curry Joins Howard University Division I golf teams for Inaugural Golf Classic in Pebble Beach, California Washington – Howard University recently hosted the Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic, a first-of-its-kind golf classic and fundraising event for the Howard University golf program. NBA champion Stephen Curry joined members of the golf team, Howard alumni, members of the Board of Trustees, corporate sponsors and friends of the University for the two-day event that raised over $3 million in support of the golf program’s endowment.

“I am deeply appreciative of all the sponsors for the Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic, including Zendesk, Nuna, Workday and Follow Alana. Over $3 million were raised as a result of event sponsorships, the private auction and participation in the event.

“The Bison at the Beach Golf Classic was an experience I’ll never forget, and it was truly an honor to play at Pebble Beach Golf Links,” said Everett Whiten Jr., rising senior and student athlete for the men’s golf team. “I also got to meet the people who have impacted mine and my teammates futures

by donating to our golf program. It was a great networking opportunity, and I will always cherish this trip and the memories made with my team. I am grateful to all the sponsors and everyone that contributed to this successful event.”

The Howard University golf program made its debut in the 2020-2021 academic year with Curry’s support. The golf team recently completed a successful inaugural season, which ended with Howard University rising senior Gregory Odom Jr. winning the individual title at the HBCU national championship, the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Works Collegiate Championship.

“The Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic at Pebble Beach was incredible,” said Samuel G. Thousands Of Dollars Awarded To Black Males For Achieving Academic Excellence Chicago Organization Awards Scholarships To Twenty-Two Black Males Impacted By Gun Violence The Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation (ETSF) is awarding scholarships to 22 African-American young men, Sunday, July 25, 2021. The ‘Yet, Still We Rise’ Scholarship Fundraiser, Gala and Silent Auction will highlight the academic achievements and success of young black males in the Chicago area.

The event honors the legacy of Ezekiel Taylor who was robbed, and killed on Chicago’s Southside in the early 80s. The gala, usually an in-person affair, is virtual again due to the Covid pandemic. “The pandemic has forced our students to survive, thrive and think outside of the box, and it has also caused our foundation to become more innovative and creative,” says Tenisha Taylor, daughter of Ezekiel Taylor and ETSF CEO. “These young men have survived a tumultuous year. From the public health crisis, to the cloud of Black

on Black crime, to the Black Lives Matter movement, young Black men are traumatized on every level. Despite the negative news and societal constraints, we are celebrating the achievements and academic success of young men who are making positive life choices”, adds the former CNN Executive Producer.

‘Yet, Still We Rise’ is a one-hour production that celebrates the 2021 scholarship winners, and highlights their achievements. “You can’t be what you can’t see,” says Dennis Banks, annual donor and owner of C.F.K. ETSF places energy around a population in our community that is at risk, our young black males are vulnerable and this organization gives them comfort food. COVID ‘Surge Teams’ May Be Coming To Your Town Black PR Wire - The White House is readying COVID-19 “surge teams” to send to communities with low vaccination rates to help combat the rapidly spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus, officials announced Thursday.

The teams will work with local public health authorities to conduct contact tracing and will distribute supplies as needed or requested by states, such as therapeutics and additional tests. The teams will also help augment staffing at local vaccination sites.

The Biden administration plans to deploy “surge response” teams to some states, including Missouri, in response to rising COVID-19 cases across various parts of the country.

Nevada and Missouri have had the highest rates of COVID-19 infection in recent weeks, and there have been recent outbreaks in Utah, Nebraska, and Wyoming, as well.

According to the Kansas City Star and multiple media reports, Missouri has requested aid from the White House, which announced

the newly-formed federal “surge response” teams on Thursday.

Teams will be deployed to several states where the COVID-19 Delta

variant presents risks to unvaccinated Americans. In a recent report, the CDC says the highest proportion of Delta variant was

detected in southwest Missouri, which accounted for nearly twothirds of all Delta variants identified in the state.

The teams are designed to “surge additional testing into communities to expand detection of the virus and allow public health authorities to do contact tracing to help contain outbreaks,” according to an announcement from the White House.

State data shows that 44.6% of residents have received at least one shot, far short of the 54.7% rate nationally. In more than 60 Missouri counties, less than 30% of the population had received their first shot, according to state data.

Arkansas has less than 35% of residents fully vaccinated as of Sunday, and the state averaged 16 new cases per 100,000 residents every day over the past week, according to Johns Hopkins. That’s about five times the nationwide rate of new cases.

The surge teams will work with public health department officials to conduct contact tracing. They will also distribute supplies such as therapeutics or COVID-19 tests and bolster staffing levels at vaccination sites.

Redbox Entertainment Acquires Exclusive Domestic Rights To Nick Cannon’s ‘SHE BALL’ The Multihyphenate Wrote, Directed, Produced and Stars in the Sports Comedy Available in Theaters and On Demand August 6 PRNewswire - Los Angeles -- Redbox Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to SHE BALL, a feature written, produced, and directed by Nick Cannon. (NewsUSA) - Contact lenses allow those individuals who need vision correction the freedom to see better without the inconvenience of glasses.

However, contact lenses can also cause inflammation, pain, and dry eyes, according to Dr. Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, FACS. "More than fifteen percent of people suffer from a problem called contact lens intolerance, where discomfort and dryness is so great, they have to give up their

lenses," says Dr. Donnenfeld, a board-certified ophthalmologist, clinical professor of ophthalmology at New York University, and past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

In addition, contact lens wearers run the risk of serious eye infections. A recent report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that approximately 20 percent of infections associated with contact lens wear led to serious eye damage.

"Many of my own patients are upset and frustrated because they can no longer wear contact lenses," says Dr. Donnenfeld. However, several new treatment approaches, including an eyelid cleanser called Avenova, can help, he says.

"The most common cause of contact lens intolerance is dry eye, which occurs when the eye doesn't have a sufficient film of protective tears," Dr. Donnenfeld explains. "That problem, in turn, is caused or exacerbated by bacteria and tiny parasitic mites that live on the eyelids. The microbes not only irritate sensitive eye tissue, causing pain and inflammation (and, sometimes, serious eye infections), they also make enzymes that break down a crucial oil layer that protects the tear film," he says. Knowing If It's Alzheimer's Or Just Typical Age-Related Changes (NewsUSA) - Maybe your mom forgot where she parked her car. Or maybe you had to resort to describing "the thing that gets the creases out of clothes" to a salesperson because you couldn't remember the word "iron."

In either case, part of you may have been worried it could be … Alzheimer's disease. With good reason.

Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. joins the more than 5 million Americans now living with this fatal brain disease, which slowly destroys memory and thinking skills before ultimately making even a simple thing like swallowing impossible. And with no current cure, it's no wonder a recent poll found that no other life-threatening condition - not cancer, not strokes - instills more fear among those 65 and older.

"One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another dementia," says a spokesperson for the association. "But it isn't just a disease of old age. Approximately 200,000 Americans under age 65 have younger-onset Alzheimer's disease."

To help raise awareness and critical funds for care, support and research, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's will be held through November in more than 600 communities nationwide. It's the largest event of its kind, and the financial services firm Edward Jones has committed to raising $12 million over five years as its national presenting sponsor.

"This is about empathy," says the firm's Ken Cella. "And not just for the estimated 150,000 Edward Jones clients suffering from Alzheimer's, or another dementia, and those upending their lives to care for them."

Given all the understandable fear surrounding the disease, it's important to distinguish between what may be early symptoms of Alzheimer's or another dementia and the typical age-related changes most everyone experiences now and then: * Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information. (A typical age-related change: Sometimes forgetting appointments or names, but remembering them later.) * Difficulty completing familiar tasks. They may have trouble driving to a familiar location or remembering the rules of a favorite game. (A typical age-related change: Occasionally needing help recording a TV show.) * Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. Vision problems can be a symptom for some. That may lead to difficulty with balance or trouble reading, and they may also have problems judging distance and determining color or contrast that cause issues with driving. (A typical age-related change: Vision changes related to cataracts.) * Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. They may put things in unusual places - and even accuse others of stealing, especially as the disease progresses. (A typical age-related change: Occasionally misplacing things and retracing steps to find them.)

* Withdrawal from work or social activities. They may experience changes in the ability to hold or follow a conversation, which can cause them to withdraw from hobbies, social activities or other engagements. (A typical age-related change: Sometimes feeling uninterested in family or social obligations.) * Changes in mood and personality. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may also be easily upset at home, with friends, or when out of their comfort zone.

(A typical age-related change: Developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted.)

Study Refutes Link Between Strokes, Chiropractic Care Every once in a while, when some high-profile young man or woman dies unexpectedly from a stroke, the media races to find an explanation. Aha! She ran a marathon without being in shape! Aha! He visited a chiropractor several days before to relieve a pinched nerve in his neck!

The latter theory at least is refuted by research done this year by a team of neurosurgeons at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. They performed what they described as "a systematic review and metaanalysis of published data" to determine whether there's a direct correlation between the manipulation performed by doctors of chiropractic -- manual adjustments widely acknowledged to relieve muscle-related pain -- and a condition called cervical artery dissection(CAD) in which a small tear opens in the artery walls of the neck.

That's important since such a tear can result in a stroke should a blood clot form and later break free to block a blood vessel in the brain.

The team's conclusion? "There is no convincing evidence to support a causal link between chiropractic manipulation and CAD." CAD is actually quite rare. It's been estimated that it annually strikes only two to three people, per 100,000 of the population, and various epidemiologic studies through the years suggest that strokes can occur at an equal rate whether sufferers are under chiropractic or other medical care for the headaches and neck pain it often produces.

As for chiropractic care in general, it's worth remembering that -- after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged doctors last March to avoid prescribing potentially addictive prescription painkillers in the face of mounting deaths -- a slew of health experts joined the chorus of those who'd already been praising chiropractic as a safe and effective treatment for neck, mid back, and lower back pain.

"Not only is chiropractic care very safe, it actually poses fewer risks than medical or surgical treatment," says Gerard Clum, DC, a spokesperson for the not-for-profit Foundation for Chiropractic Progress.
