MORGAN STATE STUDY DETAILS UNIVERSITY’S NEARLY $1-BILLION ECONOMIC IMPACT STATEWIDE, $574-MILLION ON BALTIMORE CITY Morgan State University President David Wilson recently announced the results of a statewide impact study, after the conclusion of a comprehensive analysis of the University’s economic and fiscal contributions conducted by Econsult Solutions, Inc., an independent Philadelphia-based economics firm. The detailed study reveals that Morgan is a valuable economic engine, making an annual $990-million financial impact on Maryland and $574 million within Baltimore City. In addition, the University supports more than 6,500 jobs statewide, nearly 4,000 of which are located in the city.

The study’s conclusions are based on data spanning fiscal year 2014 to fiscal year 2019. It examines seven key areas: operations, capital investments, student and visitor spending, wage premium, commitment to community, innovation and economic opportunities to local and diverse populations.

NEW SCREENING GUIDELINES REFLECT NATIONAL TREND Colon and rectal cancers are on the rise in America, and at an alarming rate for younger adults. According to the American Cancer Society, since 1994, colon and rectal cancers have increased 51% among adults under the age of 50.

According to Dr. Omar Khokhar, an OSF HealthCare Gastroenterologist, these changes reflect what he and his colleagues see in practice.”I think it’s a relevant change. It captures what we are seeing,” said Dr. Khokhar. “Anecdotally I have seen patients in their early 30s now with colon cancer or rectal cancer, so I think it’s important that we start to get involved and start intervening earlier to capture those folks earlier to prevent more cancer from being diagnosed.”

These screenings don’t have to be intimidating. The gold standard in colorectal cancer screening is a colonoscopy.

However, patients can also choose one of several other non-invasive tests, including home stool tests available by prescription. Dr. Khokhar says to talk to your doctor about your options.

CHATHAM RESIDENT HAYDEN SCHUMER WINS PUBLIC VOTE TO DESIGN ILLINOIS’ BICENTENNIAL MEDALLION SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs recently announced Hayden Schumer of Chatham, Il., as the winner of the Bicentennial Coin Contest. The design was one of five finalists voted on by the public. The winning design will be minted in silver on one side of the coin and distributed to commemorate the Illinois Bicentennial. The back of the coin will feature the state seal.

“Congratulations to Hayden Schumer on winning the bicentennial coin contest,” Frerichs said. “Thanks to Hayden’s artistic talent, Illinois will have a bicentennial coin that we all can be proud of to celebrate our state’s 200th birthday.”

Schumer, 21, is a graduate of Glenwood High School in Chatham. He recently graduated from Lincoln Land Community College with a degree in graphic design. He is pursuing a degree in communications at the University of Illinois at Springfield this Fall.

Schumer titled his design “The First 200” and said it depicted “Illinois’ strong, vibrant history.” The design features President Abraham Lincoln and multiple milestones and landmarks in Illinois..

Sister House, a women recovery home in Chicago’s Austin community, is moving to a new location after 36 years in their current facility. The organization is currently hosting a fundraising campaign to raise $5,000 to assist with moving expenses as they prepare for their Sept. 1 move-in date.

Sister House is a 16-bed facility that adult women are able to transition into after completing at least 28-days in a detox or treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction or after exiting the penal system and wanting extra help in maintaining their sobriety.

“If you can educate a woman and empower a woman then, in turn, she will do the same with those in her household, meaning her children, which will allow her and her family to be more productive within the communities that they live. That’s really the cusp of what Sister House stands on, it’s about advocating, supporting, and empowering women so they can ultimately be supportive to the communities to which they live,” said Lisa Steward-Baugh, executive director of Sister House Currently, Sister House operates in an old convent at 851 N. Lemington St. in the heart of Austin. The current building is in need of some repairs and rehabilitation that Sister House cannot provide so they have decided to move.

“The building that we are in is a former convent and it works really well because of the length of time that our women stay in the program and the fact that it allows the women to have their own individual space as they evolve and elevate,” said Steward-Baugh. “We have been in this building on Lemington for 36 years and unfortunately it needs a lot of TLC that we are not able to financially offer and it just works in our favor to identify a new location. As we prepare to move, myself and the board came up with the idea of the 60-day challenge to try and raise $5,000 to go toward preparing for that move.”

The organization will be moving into another former convent location on the corner of Washington Blvd. and Austin Blvd.

Aside from financial donations for the move, Sister House is also hosting a volunteer orientation on June 30th from 10 a.m. to noon for anyone who is interested in getting involved in the organization. Volunteer opportunities include administrative assistance, www.thechicagocitizen.com

“Several months ago someone donated us 10 working sewing machines and unfortunately we don’t have anybody that knows how to sew but if

we obtained a volunteer that knew how to sew and was open to offering some hours to help our women learn how to sew that would be another volunteer opportunity,” said Steward-Baugh.

Local Heroes to be Honored at the Black Fire Brigade’s Grand Opening CHICAGO — An industrious eight-yearold boy and a resourceful Chicago firefighter will be recognized at the June 23, 2018, grand opening of the Black Fire Brigade’s new home.

Torey Ankum already spends every moment he can at the site, painting and helping get it ready for business – even though he’s only in third grade. At the grand opening, he’ll receive the first-annual Corey Ankum Leadership Award, honoring his father, who died in the line of duty while battling a blaze in a vacant, one-story building that collapsed on 18 firefighters in 2010.

The group will also present its first-annual Arthur “Lee” Lewis Jr. Award, commemorating the African-American who won a 2010 federal lawsuit for the City of Chicago to hire 111 African-American firefighters. The inaugural honoree will be Eric Washington, the firefighter who in 2016 rallied the Chicago community to collect and deliver thousands of cases of water to help residents of Flint, Mich., dealing with toxic tap water.

“We’re proud to help our members do everything from studying to advancing in their careers, to honoring fallen comrades,

to mentoring each other and the next generation, to networking and bringing our voice to public discussions, to fundraising, and even to hosting special events at our beautiful facility,” says Quention Curtis, President and founder of the Black Fire Brigade. “We’re focusing on Chicago, but we welcome all African-American firefighters and EMS personnel, as well as their families and friends, to leverage us as a resource to engage with each other and with the broader community.”

A highlight of the event will be the unveiling

of a memorial acknowledging 13 black firefighters and paramedics who died in the line of duty, and a display of their badges. In addition, the Chicago police and firefighter honor guards will conduct the posting of the colors.

Invited guests will also include Derrick Curtis, Alderman, 18th Ward; Carrie Austin, Alderman, 34th Ward; Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State; U.S. Representative Bobby Rush; former Chicago Fire Commissioner John Brooks; and Mattie Rawski, the city’s First African-American female firefighter.

School’s Out, but for Chicago’s Teens, Live Arts are Still in Session CHICAGO, IL – Sun’s out, school’s over, and there’s no better time to culture up. Urban Gateways’ Teen Arts Pass (TAP) makes that possible without teens or their parents having to break the bank. Launched on May 1 of this year, the permanent and ongoing initiative makes live arts performances in and around Chicago available to TAP members for only $5. Teen Arts Pass membership is free of charge to all teens between the ages of 13 and 19 and provides access to live arts and culture events year-round. There is no residency requirement to participate in the program.

Since launching in May, 1,500 teens have already registered for this groundbreaking program and more are signing up every day.

There are 25 participating partners that represent large and small music, dance, and theater venues across the city and suburbs. (Full list below.)

TAP aims to make Chicago’s arts and culture accessible to youth all over the city. Commissioner Mark Kelly of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events said of the program, “[There is] so much culture around us, but there’s a sense that ‘it’s not for me,’ ‘it’s not affordable,’ that ‘I’m not

going to feel comfortable,’ that ‘I’m not going to be welcome.’ And now with TAP, $5 for incredible performances from our artists and artists from around the world, Urban Gateways has opened doors, avenues, and perceptions that otherwise wouldn’t be available to teens. And teens can do it on their terms.”

TAP registration is free for any teen; they can access the free signup form at teenartspass.org and register for the program in a matter of minutes. Upon registering they receive a temporary digital card and later a mailed physical card; they can access event info on the website calendar and soon on the TAP app, set to launch within a few months. TAP is a day-of-show program, so teens are encouraged to call the box office of the show they wish to see ahead of time to ensure tickets are still available. If tickets remain, teens should arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes ahead of curtain, present their proof of TAP membership at the box office, and they will be able to purchase a $5 cash ticket to the show (including tickets valued at upwards of $200) – giving them access to many of Chicago’s premier performance organizations in music, theater, and dance.

The Urban Gateways TAP Teen Council (comprised of 10 Chicagoarea teens during the 2017-18 school year) lent invaluable support, guidance, and enthusiasm to the program launch to ensure TAP can best serve young people for years to come. This card will make a lot of teens feel special.

Caliber Collision Centers Collects 4.3 Million Meals to Feed Kids This Summer Caliber Collision teammates nationwide rallied valued customers, business partners, and local communities to collect a record 4.3 million meals in their recently completed 7th Annual Rhythm Restoration Food Drive to feed at-risk children over the summer months.

Cash and food items collected from Caliber’s Rhythm Restoration Food Drive will help 53 regional food banks replenish and stock their pantries over the summer months when demand is highest for families with children who do not have access to school lunches.

According to Feeding America, of the 22 million children who receive free and reduced-price lunches during the school year, only four

million continue to receive subsidized meals over the summer months.

Prairie States Delivers 1.86 Percent Medical Trend in 2017 Prairie States Enterprises, Inc., the Sheboygan, Wisconsin-based third party administrator, has announced that the self-funded clients they serve experienced annual medical cost inflation (or “trend”) of 1.86 percent in 2017. Get Sugary Drinks Out of Hospitals

Imagine you’re going into surgery.

You’re under strict doctor’s orders to avoid solids. But you’re drinking plenty of clear liquids like juice, Gatorade, and Sprite before the surgery. And you’re looking forward to the “protein shake” that the nurses have promised as a meal replacement after the procedure.

Then you realize that you’re on track to consume 30 teaspoons of sugar. The World Health Organization recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar, per day, for healthy people.

Physicians know that excessive sugar consumption leads to a host of ailments. Yet today’s hospitals are veritable sugar shacks.

This doesn’t make sense.

Our bodies weren’t designed to process copious amounts of sugar.

Excess sugar causes our pancreases to produce excess insulin, which

disrupts our metabolisms and causes our bodies to store its extra energy as body fat.

Sugar consumption drives America’s obesity epidemic, which accounts for nearly one in five U.S. deaths. Folks who drink one or more sugary beverages per day are 26 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who have one or fewer drinks per month.

Researchers have even linked sugar to certain cancers. One study of 60,000 women showed that women who consumed excessive sugar were more likely to develop uterine cancer.

It’s unfortunate that hospitals foist so much sugar on patients. The “protein shakes” given to people recovering from surgery are loaded with sugars like corn syrup and commercially refined oils.

For example, each serving of Ensure’s “Original Milk Chocolate Nutrition Shake” has 33 grams of carbohydrates -- i.e., sugar -- while

By contrast, a serving of chicken drumsticks contains nearly 30 percent more protein. Another “protein shake,” Boost’s “Chocolate Sensation” has just 10 grams of protein and 41 grams of carbohydrates. That’s more than a can of Coca Cola.

Patients are also encouraged to consume Gatorade to get electrolytes. But just 32 ounces of Gatorade contains 56 grams of sugar -- double what the World Health Organization recommends per day.

In most hospitals, patients can choose from a smorgasbord of sugar. Vending machines are packed with candy and soda -- and cafeterias serve dessert with most meals. One in five U.S. hospitals

even houses a fast-food restaurant like McDonald’s!

Medical establishments must do better. That’s why, for years, I’ve advocated for my hospital -- West Virginia’s Jefferson Medical Center (JMC) -- to remove all sugary drinks from its vending machines and cafeterias. We just did so.

JMC is one of the first hospitals in the country to offer low-carb meals to its diabetic patients. That’s hugely important. Recent studies reveal that a carb-restricted diet can slash long-term blood sugar levels for diabetics.

most obese state in the nation -efforts like these are critical.

Other hospitals are stepping up.

In 2012, the Connecticut Mental Health Center began a “Sound Mind Sound Body” Initiative to improve the health of employees and patients. Now, patient meals only include water, coffee, tea, milk, and sugar-free juice. Geisinger Health Systems in Pennsylvania went sugar free for beverages in January. And other hospitals are swapping sugary protein shakes for sugar-free yogurt, which is full of protein, healthy fats, and “good bacteria” that aids digestion.

Hospitals have a duty to make people healthy. They can start fulfilling that mission by banning sugary drinks.

Katiz makes an emergency landing this summer with their first studio album ‘Ateri’

he band Katiz made its debut in 2017 as a Mini Djazz Dj with big dreams and giant expectations. Surpassing those expectations, Katiz is debuting their first studio album called, “Ateri.”

Based in New York, Katiz is led by maestro Polomixx, vocalist Sean Davz, Guitar Player Candel Etienne and Keyboard Player Richard

Ferrer. “In just one year we have worked so hard to earn the respect of our fans and even our peers. This album release is more than just about the album, it’s about reaching our very first anniversary. We are still standing and Katiz isn’t going anywhere,” explains Polomixx.

For the past year Katiz has added something different to the Haitian Music Industry with their mix of

MEND’s Founder, Lisa Lefebvre, has experience recovering from cancer having undergone 8 surgeries and treatments over the last 15 years.

Chicago Public Library Invites Teens to Imagine Doing More! This Summer

hicago Public Library invites teens to participate in the 2018 Teen Summer Challenge, Imagine Doing More!, available now through September 1. CPL challenges teens to make a positive impact in their local environment, individually, in pairs or groups. Teens choose one environment to investigate and change (natural, neighborhood or social-emotional), and one of four possible actions (volunteering, creating campaigns, developing projects or coordinating programs). The self-directed challenge is easy for teens to follow with four phases of participation. Teens can potentially earn service-learning hours, see their work recognized on the CPL website, and develop experience relevant for college or a future job.

In honor of Navy Pier’s 102nd anniversary this July, Chicago’s mission-driven cultural destination is awarding 102 local nonprofit organizations the opportunity to either ride the iconic Centennial Wheel or experience the popular Fifth Third Bank Winter WonderFest for free as part of its annual Community Rides program. The Pier is accepting applications from now through Friday, June 29, and recipients will be announced on Friday, July 15 to coincide with the Pier’s anniversary.

Applicants must be Chicagoland-based 501(c) (3) nonprofits in good standing, and must serve a community primarily located in Cook, Dekalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Kenosha (WI), Lake, Lake (IN), and/or Will counties in order to be considered. Past recipients are welcome to reapply.

Awarded nonprofits will be issued complimentary Centennial Wheel tickets or Fifth Third Bank Winter WonderFest following the announcement on July 15.

Centennial Wheel tickets will be valid through May 31, 2019, while Fifth Third Bank Winter WonderFest tickets will be valid through the duration of the event (from November 30, 2018 to January 6, 2019).

Interested organizations are encouraged to apply online by close of business on June 29.

Now in its third year, the annual Community Rides program has quickly become a popular program within the local nonprofit scene. Mara O’Brien, executive director of past recipient, SitStayRead, shared how the program afforded her students the rare opportunity to venture out of their school and neighborhood and allowed them to see and appreciate their city from a unique perspective while riding the Centennial Wheel. Create And Save Your Own Personal College List: Use free resources such as the College Board's bigfuture.org to search for and compare colleges, find scholarships, understand financial aid, navigate the application process from start to finish, and get reminders, tips and guidance for every step. With a profile on bigfuture.org, you can continually update your list and find the college that's best for you.

Register For The SAT: The SAT is an important part of admission and it's accepted by all U.S. colleges and universities. The College Board recently redesigned the SAT to make it easier than ever for students to show their best work. Students can take the SAT on August 25, which gives them a chance to practice for the test without the added pressure of being in school. And students can prepare-free-by logging on to Official SAT Practice for a personalized plan, including thousands of interactive questions with instant feedback, video lessons, full-length practice tests, and test-taking tips and strategies.

Show Colleges You're Interested: There are many ways you can let your top colleges know you're interested in attending. Visit a campus or go on a virtual tour; participate in an online chat hosted by the admission office; follow the college on social media; request more information through an institution's online inquiry form; and give it a little bit more information about your interests.
